Princess Iron Fan uses her Banana Leaf Fan to get the better of the Monkey King in this ukiyo-e print created by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1868.
If you're interested, I've got that print, and others as well, available on t-shirt, sweatshirts, and hoodies at my Etsy store, NuadaSama:

hey! i was just curious if i could use your art in an artist study? i looked over your faq and i didn't see any mention of it so i just wanted to ask. it's okay if the answer is now, no pressure :)
( ꈍᴗꈍ) sure, if you credit me! i would be incredibly flattered!!
now that being said, i would also like to share with you some artists whose work i've enjoyed doing studies of! i find it's very useful to "follow the money" with artists you like, and go along the chain of inspiration to see how ideas and styles can change from person to person.
vincent van gogh is my BIGGEST inspiration in terms of color and composition! his unique style of brush work is what he's best known for, but i recommend looking at his works holistically too, and seeing where the eye is led and how he plays with light, color, and mood. if you want to go further, he was very inspired not only by prior impressionists, but also by japanese ukiyo-e artwork— try comparing "starry night" to "great wave off kanagawa" and seeing the similarities in the grand, sweeping movements they convey.
i'm sure i've said this a million times, but genndy tartakovsky has probably my favorite cartoonist style. it's at its peak in samurai jack— opinions are mixed about the narrative quality of season 5, but if nothing else, the art direction is absolutely jawdropping. one of my favorite scenes is the bit in the tomb, where jack is hiding in a sarcophagus, because the music and visuals are paying homage to a scene at the climax of "the good the bad and the ugly"!
in a totally different direction from those two... i'm a huge fan of gil elvgren's pinup girls! i've had a few different pinup calendars over the years, and at the end of the year, i like to cut up the pages individually for mini posters— i've covered pretty much all my available wall space in his illustrations. i love it when artists don't feel the need to sacrifice expressiveness for realism; his girls are SO DARN CUTE and they all look like they're having so much whimsical, cartoonish, flirty fun!
here's a post where i talk about more inspirations!
here's a post listing some other tumblr artists i like!
i'm also just very heavily inspired by 50s-60s print illustration... things like advertisements, "clip art" (which you had to physically clip out of a book and paste onto the page), and of course, tv cartoons. one big trend i love with that "googie" art style is how incredibly limited the palettes were, and how efficient the economy of line was. as much as i love the bold, blocky, dynamic shapes of styles like tartakovsky, who takes insp
also, please remember i'm entirely self taught and am NOT an expert, so just be aware of that if you see any weird stylistic choices in my work... i admire the work of a lot of professionally trained artists, but that doesn't mean i have any training or real right to go around teaching people stuff. i'm just some guy from a big crazy family full of artists, only some of whom went to school for it.
okay, that got way longer than i meant it to, SORRY! here's a pic of my cat Carmen as a thanks for reading this far ^_^

"The Second Dream of St. Joseph, ink drawing on Japanese tissue paper, with gold and palladium leaf details.
https://www.danielmitsui.com/00_pages/dream_joseph_washi.html
This depicts the second dream of St. Joseph, in which an angel (traditionally identified as St. Gabriel) warns him to flee into Egypt with the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. This is the sixth commission I have received to draw Christian subjects in the style of Japanese art. In this work, I especially imitated the style of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, a late ukiyo-e master. I referenced his series of woodblock prints 100 Aspects of the Moon for many parts of my drawing.
St. Gabriel holds a fan containing a vision of the Flight into Egypt and the Miracle of the Cherry Tree. I attempted to convey a sense of otherworldly urgency by having the angel’s robes and hair blown by a strong wind that affects nothing else in the picture. St. Joseph sleeps in the stable of Bethlehem, next to the gifts of the Magi (in antique Chinese vessels). The text is from Emile Raguet’s Classical Japanese New Testament translation of 1910, and says Gabriel and Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him.
Medium: Drawing, color ink on washi with gold and palladium leaf
Dimensions: 8" × 10"
Year: 2014
The original drawing was made on private commission."

Immediate swing around to a character that’s far less obscure and also technically existed when I was last active in the fandom, though I never drew her back then (I doodled everyone in the LoLK cast at least once except for her and Clownpiece). Anyway, I’ve been fascinated with the fact that she purified herself into being nothing more than her grudge so much that almost her entire identity was wiped away, so I wanted to draw her covering her face with a fan with a kitsune on it (used a couple ukiyo-e as reference for drawing that), looked up Chinese fans to make sure I was thinking of the right thing (this kind is called tuanshan), and found out they were historically used in a wedding tradition (queshan) where the bride covers her face with a fan and then reveals it at the end, so I was like. Well, that’s appropriate given that Junko is the Touhou character most likely to have been married at some point, so it all worked out nicely. But then I figured I should probably draw her face anyway, if only to practice giving Touhou characters faces that fit my style and aren’t all the same, and went a bit silly with it lol(k)

big fan of inazuma's story cutscene style it is So Clearly just ukiyo-e imported into teyvat, and so pretty bc of that [visual analysis ramble ahead]
most of the cutscenes can just be split into either a) illustrations, usually for in-game fiction/stories or b) normal genshin story PV but with inazuman elements
a) illustrations: akitsu haneasobi (the story with the youkai and human warrior), the legend of the blue and red oni, the five kasen, and interestingly enough, snippets from ayaka and yae miko's character teasers
b) inazuman style story cutscenes: kazuha and tomo's vision hunt decree story, the raiden and makoto cutscene, and scaramouche's villain origin story
for the illustrations: flat, kind of washed out color, bold visible lineart, and a very 2D look (pics from 5 kasen, ayaka's teaser, and yae's teaser respectively)

vs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the genshin art is all in calx's painting style, but besides the difference in how people are drawn, you can see how different flat colors blend into each other naturally (like on the floor panels in venti's room versus the wall in the tea room painting) and how every single line is drawn distinctly in black ink
these all depict room settings but the non-room, landscape style ones also have really nice linework detail and idk it just looks so good, so painterly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(notice the texture of the mountains (the stipples to show gradients and gradual value changes), the way trees and water are drawn, as well as the style of the sky/moon (ombre but flat colors, fairly desaturated)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
unrelated sidenote but they went so hard with akitsu haneasobi by making the cutscene feel like a bunch of animated manga panels, w the speech bubbles, little emote symbols, speed line effects, and frame paneling; that was fire
anyways the other, genshin-style cutscenes also have desaturated but contrasting colors, a ton of ombre, and flats. also usually some form of a neutral colored yellow/orange/tan background
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
no other thoughts I just think the art direction is neat and worth noting
(sort of a continuation of my fontaine story teaser art style analysis)

I will include where I purchased each of these items, along with a base price, shipping will be different depending on what country you’re from!
Anyway, please don’t make fun of me too much for all of this lmaooo. Enjoy

Ichikawa Ebijürö in the Role of “ Töken Jübei” from the play Osaka Aji Benimurasaki - Shunkosai Hokosu (c. 1822)
One of the most important early 19th-century (1810-1820s) Osaka artists, Hokushü established the Osaka Style of actor prints.
Unlike Kyoto where there was a strong artistic tradition, in Osaka, people were eager to introduce new artistic trends and technologies from Edo (Tokyo), including the multi-colored woodblock printing technology. By the end of the 18th century, Osaka actor prints had become very popular. However, there were few commercial artists available to produce them.
Fans of Kabuki Theater occasionally created Osaka actor prints. In fact, even the talented Hokushü was not initially a professional artist. Osaka Kabuki actors performed on occasion in Edo and were thus sometimes depicted by well-known Edo ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825). Those Edo prints were sold in Osaka and attracted many Osaka Kabuki fans, which eventually stimulated the production of Osaka Kabuki prints. Thus, there were some cultural exchanges between Edo and Osaka. (from Kamigata-e exhibition 4/1/08-)

“The Rows of Cherry Trees” / “Sakura Namiki” (1957) by Macoto Takahasji
Status: Finished, Volumes: 1, Chapters: 4
Synopsis: Light drama and misunderstanding ensues when Yukiko is accused of intentionally throwing a ping pong match with the goal of garnering the affections of an upperclassmate.
Review: “The Rows of Cherry Trees'' is a sweet and delicate story of passion between female classmates that “balance[s] deliciously between Ukiyo-e prints and modern manga, with both narrated stills and panels with dialogue.” (Erica Friedman, okazu.yuricon.com). Though not quite the first manga, Shoujo, Class S work, or proto-Yuri, the book in many ways acts as a transitional piece and a significant influence on all the aforementioned mediums and genres, giving a unique window into how classic Japanese art helped develop more modern Japanese media styles of today. In the context of modern manga “The Rows of Cherry Trees” comes across as quite restrained, and perhaps even slow and uneventful. I am not meaning to communicate that “The Rows of Cherry Trees'' is a bad or uninteresting manga, but it is an artwork of its own accord meant to be consumed on its own terms, and when approached as such it does have the ability to be truly moving, if not just a delightful and fascinating look into manga history. This story predates Yuri as we are familiar with it today, but even for a lightly seasoned Yuri fan it is not hard to see how the intimate (likely) platonic relationships between girls in stories such as this helped develop and set the tone for more explicitly LGBT+ narratives for years to come. Personally I was very surprised by the power of one scene in particular in which Yukiko and Chikage see a ballet of a swan being hunted and killed, a ballet I couldn’t help but see as a metaphor for the inevitability of heteropatriarchal powers awaiting our adolescent characters once they should leave the supposed safety of emerging girl’s culture offered to them by schooling. Scenes such as this are not explicit in what they are communicating or why they were included beyond the apparent beauty of the artwork, but if you are familiar with the early Yuri works and the history surrounding them, you will have the chance to have emotional connections such as these.
I would not recommend this work to an early manga or Yuri initiate, and despite the beauty this will take a steeling of one’s nerves to continue paying attention, short as the manga is, but if you have any interest in the history of manga, Shoujo, Class S, or Yuri I would say this is a must read.
Additional Points:
+ Point for playing a critical role in helping develop and codify girl’s culture in Japan and giving relationships between girls a place on the stage in both Japanese and world media.
+ Point for beautiful visual metaphors and creative storytelling.
+ Point for historical intrigue in regards to the formation of classic genres.
- Point for not going quite as far with the story as I would have preferred.
- Point for ultimately feeling inconsequential.
Rating: 6 / 10 (Fine)

Dan - For the Island card in our @mtgsecretlair Lands set, I made a VERY loose sketch to start the Island land and passed it off to Kozy as she had an idea for how it should look as the comp made her think of the quite famous (and, to our mind, a little odd) old ukiyo-e print from the early 1800’s titled “Hakone: View of the Lake (Hakone, kosui no zu)” by ukiyo-e master #Hiroshige (1797-185). Whenever we see this to print reproduced in books it jumps out as being strangely colored - with a mountainside turned into a patchwork quilt of color blocks. I always wondered if the color choices in this famous version of it (other prints exist of the same artwork that use a more naturalistic color palette for the mountainside, but they are not so common) were made by the artist himself, or by the woodblock printer who pulled the editions. Its a funky print, and was a good starting point for kozy to make this fantastical (but still very Japanese looking) Island card. I went in and tightened the image up (and added some of the narrative details including the bunny sea serpent and the island denizens reacting a massive carrot effigy to appease it) before kozy painted the final inks in #nihonga pigment on washi paper. We passed it back and forth to color the work digitally. If you are a Magic player or a kozyndan fan (or both!), consider pre-ordering a set! They are available only until January 6th. #kozyndan #magicthegathering #magicsecretlair #mtgsecretlair #island #bunnyserpent #ukiyoe #magiccardart 💫 (at Yamanashi Prefecture) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl5WiR_OLvO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
