more than anything I think discworld dwarfs having a "gender unary" sheds light on the fact that sex/gender is a completely arbitrary criteria for dividing a population. we as humans don't have separate bathrooms for blonds vs. brunettes or short people vs. tall people, and in the same respect dwarfs don't think of their species as being divided by their sex characteristics
