Here's a bit of writing based on headcanons from @undertalegay on how Mettaton's body functions and how being a ghost left him touch starved. Go read his fics.

Mettaton is nearly done one of his songs, leading the audience to sing along with the final bits of the chorus, when bit of metal breaks off the top of the stage he's performing and hits him on the arm as he throws it out for dramatic flair.

The reaction is immediate. He clutches his now injured appendage, finishing the final line of the song with all the fabulous grace of someone trying not to cry then moves off stage without taking a bow. He manages to capture the horrified faces of the staff waiting in the wings before he promptly passes out from the pain.

When he wakes he's laying down. He notices Blooky and Shyren next to him, looking down with worry. There's a human medic, who he knows can't do much for him, but at some point doctor Alphys got here, which means he must have been out for a while since this show is in a completely different city. He notices, after a moment, a numbness on his left side. He moves his head over to examine his left arm which now has a huge gash on top of the fake skin.

He clenches and unclenches his hand. Where there should be a great deal of pain he feels nothing.

"I turned off your pain receptors." Alphys supplies, confirming his suspicions. "D-dont aggravate it."

He relaxes. And feels absolutely nothing from it.

As Alphys gets to work on closing the very grotesque wound which his twisted metal endoskeleton he continues to feel nothing.

His mind supplies cruelly, "Just like a ghost."
