Okay so I briefly mentioned having a theory about this to @pandapantslovesyou in the notes on one of my posts and then completely forgot about it ✌️
The Witch Theory 🧙
Okay so from Obey Me! we know:
• Witches are somehow different from sorcerers.
• Sorcerers are registered at the Sorcerer's Society and need a licence to practice magic in The Human World
• There's always a distinction made when they (specially Mammon) talks about witches vs MC & Solomon (who are sorcerers)
• It's not a gender thing because MC (they/them pronouns in the game - undetermined gender depending on the players) is a sorcerer
• Sorcerers and Witches can both potentially make pacts with demons
• The demons and angels were at war for a long time. This affected their relationship with The Human World as well. By the end of the war the three worlds were at peace but (for the most part) kept closed off from each other:
a.) Despite The Celestial Realm, The Human World & The Devildom being the three big worlds and so Angels, Humans and Demons being the three main species, we've seen there are other species, capable of higher cognition, that have a smaller presence and so weren't as directly inlvolved in the war & have more freedom moving between the realms. Eg: Reapers who have contacts with humans & demons (& presumably angels as well), ghosts who live and work freely in the Devildom, fairies who lived in both the human world and Devildom but later moved out of the human world, banshees, centaurs, dragons, yetis/the snowmen
• Demons can further be broken down into sub-species (or if you want to be technical/biological about it; Angels, Humans Great Apes, Demons are different biological families. Demons can be broken down into different genera so the "lesser demons" mentioned in-game would be one genus. These can further be broken down into different specific species;) Such as the Sins, Incubi, Succubi, the little Ds and those little ant sized demons (these can't only be considered as different races/ethnicities the way humans have because there are very significant biological changes between them <ant-sized vs Sins> rather than being differentiated due to culture, environment/location & small changes in appearance, though it's quite possible the Devildom has different races/ethnicities as well <The Night Lantern People>. Most possibly the different species of the people of the Devildom acts as another factor in defining their different cultures and so defining their ethnicities)
b.) Until Diavolo's exchange program, which opened those boundaries back up. S1's exchange program can be considered something of a pilot study and, as with Simeon & Luke being the first angels in the Devildom, Solomon & MC are the first humans.
• Though the general citizens become more accepting of the presence of humans (and angels) in the Devildom, as the game & events progress, the exchange program is never expanded at a larger scale (with only two new students - neither a human). And even in S4 there are still those that are against the whole exchange program and everything it stands for.
• HOWEVER, witches are present in The Devildom. They're just casually there, despite originally being from The Human World, supposedly being human and humans outside of Solomon & MC not being allowed in The Devildom. Despite the brothers actually questioning how human Solomon can be considered given how old he is and MC displaying many non-human characteristics starting from S1 itself, neither are allowed to stay long term in the Devildom without supervision/without an affiliation to Diavolo/RAD because at the end of the day they're still more human than anything else. Witches however are just living in the Devildom with no seeming connection to RAD or the exchange program.
• Furthermore; Maddi arrives in The Devildom from The Human World. Given who she is (one of the oldest and most powerful witches) she should be considered one of the leading figures of the magic users in The Human World. Aka one of the most important figures, in this context, from one of the Big Three Worlds that have been maintaining a tenuous peace for thousands of years. Though The Human World isn't one of the main warring factions this should still be given at least a somewhat similar significance to Michael visiting The Devildom. At the very least Diavolo should be there to greet her given how peace & balance is his goal and rightfully she should be a main part of achieving that. BUT, though they treat her with respect and go out of their way to meet her wishes it's not given this significance. Diavolo deliberately doesn't come out to meet her and has apparently already met her during previous visits.
And those are all the canon facts.
The main theory then?
Witches aren't humans.
Or rather they're a subspecies of humans (or maybe more accurately they're, like humans, a species originating from the genus homo that never went extinct like the neanderthals & rest).
Appearance-wise they're more or less physically indistinguishable from humans. The main thing that seperates them is their magic.
They're much lesser in number than humans but unlike humans, where only a select few have magic, all witches have magic.
Their magic could be more natural? Whenever I think of witches I think of little cabins in the woods and large cauldrons and that always makes me think of nature. But more seriously, the sorcerers have their Society and need a licence to practice magic - this gives the impression of strict rules and a very rigid system. The game never makes a connection between the Sorcerer's Society and how witches practice magic. So what if this is because their magic is more natural and doesn't fit into the rigidity of the Sorcerer's Society.
They're different enough a species than humans (& much lesser in number) that they fall into that small group of species that weren't as affected by the post-war regulations. Meaning like the fairies they were able to travel easily to The Devildom despite living in The Human World
Anyway that's my theory 😮‍💨
All those words to essentially say that Obey Me!'s humans & witches have whatever The Owl House's humans & witches got going on

Is there any specific guide lines that you follow for the angle/devil ”species” seen in file recovery, when you a design character? Things that can or can’t appear in the designs or things are always required?
I haven't written out much but I got basic principles in mind whenever i draw
For angels I mostly adhere to the hierarchy post I made sometime ago, where guardian angels are relatively simple and angels slowly grow more inhumane the higher they get.
But for Must Haves with angels:
>Their skin is a light-source hence the glow >Palette must adhere to White/Darkblue/Red >Keep faces simple, eyes can be dots, noses can be absent from the front, etc.. >No strict distinction from hair, skin, weapons, they're all the same material (think bart simpson's undetermined hairline) >They don't have organs, when you cut an angel open it's just fleshy veins packed tightly
For Demons: >Fallen angels all have red skin, Splits can have red/purple/indigo coloured flesh >Splits can have black hair but most devils have very light coloured hair (can range in subtle hues like purple, yellow, lime green) >All must have horns and a core >tend to be lankier than angels >In regards to humanoid demons, they wear much more brightly coloured and detailed clothing than angels do
But overall with angels and demons, their designs can be pretty out there and bizarre. Larger demons tend to resemble machinery while surreal angels are more body-horror esque.

Also @rainbow-strawberry-sherbert (I hope that's okay, I'll remove the tag if you want) for the sleepyqueer species :3
Tim and Masky are catlikes! (Undetermined species but catlike in appearance.)
Tim is dressed in flannel since that's what he's most known for wearing. His fur is tricolor with patterns resembling vitiligo. He also has markings on his face that look like his sideburns! The leg that's been stitched back on is both the leg Alex broke in canon and the leg he wants amputated. He hasn't amputated it yet because Masky prefers two working legs to one.
Masky's mask is real porcelain! The eyes have black fabric over them but he can still see. It has a shorter top than in canon so the fur "bangs" show over it. They painted the lips on itself! He's very proud of it and very happy to have something to make itself look and feel like they should!
They're both pretty cautious so most of their patches on their pjs rather than their bodies! Masky specifically is very careful as it doesn't want to break their mask!

Planet where working with the fiber arts is,,, I can’t think of the word, not revered, but like, really respected?
And there’s different tests and stuff that one can take to show they “mastered” their art, and whatever type they mastered gives them a different honored position in society
I haven’t really thought about what types of roles the other ones get, but just for the purposes of the specific scenario I want, a Human visits that planet because they love learning about the different types of “knitting” (at least whatever’s the closest on different planets), and they quickly decide to take the mastering test because why wouldn’t they? (imagine going to a different planet and your favorite thing to do is really respected by everyone around you)
So every crafter, but especially those actually registered as masters, can sell the stuff they make for a shit ton of money (and this is in a post-scarcity world, guilt free wealth hell yeah), and masters get their positions (still undetermined) as well as apprentices if they want (it also looks really good for the family if someone in it gets to be an apprentice for someone else)
Now, “knitters” specifically, get to also have mentorship roles, meaning that people will come up to them for advice even outside their craft and they’re treated the same as like,,, if a Vulcan Council Member were walking around regular Vulcans
So all of this, other than my love for worldbuilding, is because that Human has that status as a “master” and is a part of Starfleet and has been asked by a family to mentor one of their own because that family member wants to join Starfleet too, and the Human’s like “hell yeah I’ll do that”
(So for this species: apprenticeship = teaching someone else your specific craft, mentorship = just kinda guiding someone through life, especially if it’s a transitional period for them)
And that’s all the long winded set up for the Human’s friends, who don’t know any of this about their personal life because that Human is kind of a private person, seeing them suddenly move someone into their home and being really nice to them and taking them everywhere, and making inaccurate guesses through a Human lens (even their Vulcan friend, who has a crush on them, and is trying to convince themself they aren’t jealous)
(Also it’s important to me that you all know that a huge majority of this species is buff, right under respect for the fiber arts and stuff like that is huge respect for warriors, technically this part isn’t that important to anything other than the mentee maybe being attractive by human standards, but it’s important to me cause it’s connected to the v rough draft I had for this species, which I will gladly go into depth about if there’s even a hint that someone’s interested)

New mutant ninja girls Turtles.
First of all, I clarify that this is not for feminist propaganda purposes or anything, just a product taken from my head that was made for fun. But I will explain the context of this idea.
130 years after the defeat of the Foot Clan, Krang and their other enemies, a global catastrophe occurred where Billions of people died or became mutants, and that created new clans and wars for survival. And after a tragedy that involved the death of Splinter. The turtles divided into different paths. Donnie is currently still alive and formed his own group of new ninja turtles to continue fighting crime in this dystopian future.
Delphinium; He takes the role of leader, and he is a sea turtle. She is the eldest of her sisters, and her weapon is a heavy club that she can only carry. She is serious, thoughtful and the strongest of all.
Daisy; She is like Raphael, and the second strongest, being surpassed by Delphinium, unlike Raphael she is smarter and thinks things through better before acting. Her weapon is a long ribbon that at first glance looks like cloth, but it is a weapon that also has an edge. She is the same species as the previous ninja turtles.
Gardenia; She is the calmest and most intelligent of all her sisters, she is a Papuan pig-nosed turtle. Although she is the quietest, she is very agile and sneaks into the shadows easily because of her dark skin. Her weapon is a scythe with chains that also holds a small flail.
Sakura; She is the one who would take the role of Mickey, she is an albino turtle of an undetermined species. She is the youngest, most innocent and clumsy of all. Sakura's weapon is 2 fans with small triangular knives on their edges, although this seems useless, those knives have poison. But not to kill, but to paralyze enemies.

So anyway they found the Magical Greek Birth Control Herb and I'm losing it.
It managed to just keep on keeping on in some random homestead by a random greek immigrant 2000 years ago to part of Libya and just....
This plant had no idea we were looking for it disconsolately for over 800 years as a species before we gave up and declared one of the basic staples of human medicine and cuisine in the entire Old World extinct from over-harvest...
And it was just out there vibing about 1200 miles away in some dude's back yard.
And now, because we live in the Sci-Fi future with our magic boxes of infinite winter we have the technology necessary to actually cultivate it purposefully instead of trying to balance harvest and growth of a very limited wild supply.
The plant needs apparently pretty complex cold stratification to sprout (specifics as yet undetermined!). That simply wasn't possible prior to electric refrigeration unless you lived in an area where the actual climate can do it for you with a season cycle.
So when people transported the seeds out of their fields of high-elevation volcanic soil to the "similar" soil in Greece, they never sprouted. No snowfall, no stratification, no sprout.
And it takes a decade for the plant to sexually mature.
oh my god the family whose land it was found on just let their sheep eat it because it was decent forage.
This is blowing my mind I'm fuckign transcendant.
It'll probably take 30-40 years of concerted effort from botanists before it becomes possible to buy viable seed or seedlings to grow myself, but that's cool.
It's good to have a long-term goal to look forward to. Helps fight the Agonies.

crocuses are wack, I've found so many varieties in the same acre, apparently they can have 2n = 6 to 2n = 70 chromosomes even in the same species. Within the lot I've been looking at I've seen 4 petaled through 8, then 10 and 12 petaled crocuses as well, they all appear to be the same species but I'm not entirely sure, anyway what I was getting to was what is your opinion on the whole 'species' thing e.g. is there a point in defining a species, esp like oaks which hybridize with everything?
Im not a biologist but my knowledge of "species" is that it's an incredibly complicated and contentious concept that you could ask 100 biologists about and get 100 different answers
biological categories are our way of artificially imposing boundaries on something chaotic and undefinable in order to talk about it and understand it.
Speciation (the dividing of things into species) helps drive evolution, since the separation of populations into closed pools that don't interbreed makes them potentially evolve in divergent directions. in animals, differences in mating preferences and breeding behaviors can do the trick; in plants, sometimes that weird polyploidy stuff happens and it creates two strains of plants that can't reproduce with each other despite being basically identical.
in other words, evolution develops mechanisms for dividing things into species because it's beneficial to the survival of your whole genetic line to create lots of variations. or at least that's how I THINK it works,
In the plant realm there's a lot of reshuffling of what we consider to be "species" based on scientists taking a peek into the genetic code to see how different they are on the inside. Plants have a tendency to create new species by hybridizing two related species and the hybrid developing into its own, third, different species. There are also hybrids that occur on the regular in the wild that aren't quite considered their own species yet.
Just how the difference is determined, I don't quite know enough about that yet. I *do* know that the exact number of oak species is undetermined and disagreed upon, as with many other plants.

Hyoscyamus Niger, is another botanical ally of witches, sciamans, diviners since ancient times.
• The human relationship with this plant is at least 8000 years old: the most ancient findings of an undetermined specie of henbane's seeds were from a Neolithic site in Farafra, Egypt, dated VII to VI millennium b.c.
• In Greek mythology it is said that the dead in Hades were crowned with Henbane, as they wandered beside the River Styx which separated them from the land of the living.
• Due to the high concentration of psychoactive substances, the plant was used to induce visions, for divinatory purposes and for spirit flight, especially if mixed with other baneful plants linked to Sorcery.

Well, regarding the root cause for Goji's distaste for the Kong species, we gotta take a look at the whooole timeline of events and encounters he had with them. Dominion gave us what might have been Goji's first ever encounter with a Kong in the form of the Rival. We know he was significantly younger and weaker at the time, as since we know he gets up to a lot more after that, I think it's safe to assume this to be his first ever interaction with the Kong species.
And although we don't know of any other minor encounter such as that happening later on, we do know of a pretty big one: The Kong/Zilla Wars. Which we know for a fact that he took part in. How big of a part he played depends entirely on how you choose to interpret the GvK novel, which does go more in depth into what went down before, during, and after the war. And at the center of the firestorm that was the war, is one named character, Zlo-zla-Halawa, which in the iwi language means "Great Eternal Enemy." This, according to the iwi legends, was a Godzilla that "ate a star", becoming supremely powerful, but also 'wicked'. Not only in their eyes, but also that of their Kong overlords. Who, in a rather foolish attempt to not only eliminate what could be a potential threat to them, but also steal his power for themselves, attacked first.
We don't know of any specifics about what happened after that, only that this attack failed and kick-started the war between the two species. And after an undetermined amount of time, the Kongs were being seemingly overwhelming. Enough for a relatively small group of them to end up defecting. Abandoning the war, leaving behind the ones who were too bloodthirsty to seek a way out, as well as Zlo-zla-Halawa. These Kongs would eventually find their way to Skull Island, where they would stay in spite of the harsh conditions. Because not only was Skull Island considerably smaller than the Hollow Earth, it also did not have nearly as many resources. Which meant they could hardly survive, let alone thrive in it. And as generations passed, the Kongs in there would either starved, or shrink in size in order to make better use of those limited resources. And well, we know their story doesn't have a happy ending. As the Skullcrawlers, who we know to be an invasive species that most likely originated from the Hollow Earth itself, would eventually overwhelm them, and leave our Kong as the last one standing.
The GvK novel heavily implies that our Godzilla is or was Zlo-zla-Halawa. And given the fact that Greg Keyes, the guy who wrote the novel, also as Dominion and upcoming GxK novel, I am willing to believe that.
Right, there is that whole can of worms to consider as well. Zlo-zla-Halawa would definitely be seen as wicked by his enemies, especially if Godzilla himself was the Great Eternal Enemy, and Godzilla deciding to not only team up with Kong but not kill him becomes more meaningful with that in mind. Though he's still clearly willing to shoot fire at him in previews for GxK, but we'll have to wait and see if we get more context than "they don't have to like each other".

The Nature of The Grimm
While it's common to refer to the apparitions as The Grimm, the the word itself refers to a substance or energy rather than a creature. The exact classification of its form is currently unknown, as The Grimm can't be detected or directly observed. It's impossible to touch, interact with, or perceive it, but heightened levels of it are considered lethal to all known life.
Tumblr media
The unknown element can't be photographed or observed in any way, shape or form.
Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of The Grimm can lead to fatigue, altered perception of time, paranoia, permanent aura collapse, organ failure, rapid cell decomposition, deteriorating cognitive functions and, likely, other undetermined psychological and physiological effects.
The only known effective way of detecting The Grimm is by observing other environmental factors in the target area. A substantial change in environmental conditions might often indicate rising levels of The Grimm (Ex: Rising temperatures in cold climate locales or falling temperatures in warmer, a drop in humidity(due to rapid evaporation of water), fluctuating oxygen levels, sudden and drastic animal migration, or area-wide extinction of specific types of flora ).
However, those changes can also be attributed to other factors (Ex: The environmental change caused by the Scarring of Vacuo during the Great War has nothing to do with The Grimm).
The hard-to-define characteristics of The Grimm have forced the Kingdoms to rely on monitoring the Creatures as a warning sign instead.
The spread of the unknown element is directly tied to the Creatures of the Grimm, as these apparitions, by just existing within the area seem to cause the background levels of The Grimm to spike substantially. Thus, eradicating The Creatures in the area is one of the most common approaches in combatting spread.
The more long-lived the Grimm, the stronger the Grimm spike it elicits. The quantity of the creatures in the area also affects the spread.
The Grimm is thought responsible for multiple extinct types of flora and fauna of Remnant. All known cases are detailed within the Extinction Record, an encyclopedia of extinct species and Kingdoms that is being kept within Eternal City.
According to the information available, if Remnant were to be treated as a continuous living system, it's fair to view The Creatures of the Grimm as a sign of infection. Any Creatures of Grimm detected are a direct threat to the well-being and long-term survival of the entire ecosystem and thus need to be eradicated on sight.
In turn, that makes the existence of the Huntsmen all the more crucial.
The Environmental Effects & Accumulation of The Grimm
The increasing background levels of Grimm don't just lead to the appearance of the apparitions but also have significant negative effects on the local ecosystem. Since The Grimm in higher doses is lethal to living beings, it's not uncommon for plant and animal life to die out - the eventual result is a barren area incompatible with life itself.
The Neverlands
When a specific threshold is crossed, the area in the vicinity is damaged, turning into what is most often referred to as The Neverlands. Beyond mere damage to flora and fauna, the Grimm begins to affect other aspects of the environment and even laws of physics.
The areas have tendency to expand reacting to outside stimuli because it's not uncommon for the Creatures of Grimm of to rush from these zones and into surrounding areas.
As of 797 E.A there are detected areas of The Neverlands within each of major continents.
Tumblr media
The current observable spread of the Neverlands.
Common factors of the Neverlands include:
Highly Lethal levels of The Grimm - The deeper layers of The Neverlands contain levels of The Grimm that can lead to instant death. Most subjects tend to expire within 48 hours since exposure.
Presence of the more ancient Grimm types like The Goliaths.
Altered sensory functions - Auditory and visual hallucinations are common. As is the possibility of complete loss of taste and smell. The notes from the few conducted expeditions to the outer layers of The Neverlands territories also describe vivid hallucinations and whispers. Reigning theory suggests a link to the Grimm's effects on the human brain.
Gravity Anomalies - The Observation of the deeper layers indicates the existence of a phenomenon where gravity seems to stop working or significantly weakens. How that correlates to the spread of The Grimm is unknown.
Laws of Physics - A single expedition to the Neverlands depths conducted on the Continent of Solitas has revealed a more exotic effect upon reality. From the data of an Observational Device sent into the deeper layers, the influence of the Grimm goes deeper than thought before. The Device seems to have inconsistencies in the essential location, temperature, movement, and gravity data. The Device damage also defies conventional logic. The effects altogether seem to suggest an impossible idea of The Grimm affecting basic concepts like space or even laws of physics. The effect possibly indicates concepts like space, the passage of time, energy, gravity, and others being affected. See the full report for a more detailed presentation of data.
Known recent expansions of The Neverlands zones:
The Third Crusade, 430 E.A
The Great War, 714 - 717 E.A
The Fall of Beacon, 796 E.A
The Grimm, (Creatures of)
Tumblr media
Commonly known as the Creatures of the Grimm, these beings are hostile apparitions that defy common sense, going against principles of both behavior and physiology.
The Creatures of Grimm, contrary to living beings, don't need sustenance to survive, which indicates that they consume their victims solely to kill them.
The Creatures of Grimm don't sleep, although some types can imitate animal sleep cycles - the reason behind that is unknown.
From the available data, The Creatures of the Grimm have three driving factors:
Continuous survival and spread - The Creatures of Grimm, at base level, function like an instinctual hivemind, with the primary goal being spreading over a location, prioritizing continuous existence of the whole. A more long-lived Creature of Grimm will prioritize survival, adaptation and evolution over its other driving factors. Whether a concept of individual self exists among the apparitions is currently unknown.
Annihilation of humans - The Creatures of Grimm primarily target only Humans and the Faunus. Environment might suffer from their presence, but that's more due to it overlapping with their primary driving factors, as well as the destructive nature of The Grimm.
Negative Emotions - Alongside the five senses, The Grimm function on an empathic level as the Creatures can detect strong surges of emotion, specifically negative emotion, from their targets. The attraction to negative emotion might be more akin to compulsory instinct than an intentional action being taken.
The body of a Grimm is actually made up out of concentrated element of the Grimm, held together into a specific form by yet undetermined force. The Creatures of Grimm don't have conventional biological organs, nervous system or anything else tied to the concept of a living being, yet they seem to be capable of using most of their senses (or at least capable of imitating the process).
Since it's not a living being, the apparition can't be killed. A Creature of Grimm "dies" when sufficient damage is dealt to its form - doing which breaks down it's coherence, making the element that the form consists of fall apart.
The Grimm, in small quantities, doesn't seem to accumulate. In fact the detectable environmental factors seem to decrease after the apparition falls apart, meaning the material dissipates. As further research into the nature of the Grimm is impossible, it's currently unclear why disrupting it's form makes the substance dissipate rather than persist.
Further research into the apparition composition is made impossible due to the fact that the Grimm tend to dissolve after death or even when under prolonged captivity.
Adaptation and Evolution

According to the analysis of the available data, The Creatures of Grimm display an extraordinary degree of adaptability as well as innate survival instinct. The apparitions exhibit unparalleled ability to process information and learn, exceeding that of human beings several times.
An average apparition can significantly increase its efficiency within a few survived encounters. For example an apparition that continuously faces ranged attacks will have honed its ability to dodge projectiles within one or two encounters.
The level of proficiency the apparitions can develop in repeated combat encounters is one of the reasons why Huntsmen weaponry is encouraged to be flexible, allowing them to switch up tactics on the go, which expands the range of actions a Huntsman can take as well as minimizes the risk of the targets surviving the encounter. It's highly recommended to ensure none escape.
The cycle of the apparitions is thus defined by their accumulation of experience.
Regular Grimm
The default beginning stage of the Creatures of Grimm. The Regular Grimm can be classified in different ways:
According to form: Preternaturalistic-type (the apparitions that mimic birds, animals or plants) or Fabulistic-type (reminiscent of mythology, folklore, concepts and ideas)
According to function: Predator-type (the apparition types that follow more destructive patterns following their basic instinct of killing humans) or Instigator-type (the apparition types that prioritize survival and that cause emotional disbalance and attract other apparitions),
Alpha Variants
If to exclude the Irregular Grimm, as the apparition accumulates experience through the years, its form might experience slight alterations - an indication of the shift towards the Alpha status. An Alpha is merely a term used to describe a long-lived form of the specific apparition type that has developed a more refined approach to combat and poses a significantly higher level of threat. Alpha encounters are rare, as one of the common reasons for an apparition's survival is its ability to remain undetected for longer periods.
It's not uncommon for an Alpha to defy the logic and patterns of its original form - for example, animal apparitions might develop into Alpha versions with mythological features. The exact nature of this alteration is unknown.
The Alphas also commonly hostile to their own kind.
On the grander scale of things, an Alpha is merely an intermediary stage lasting centuries that likely leads to the final known step in the apparition's existence - the Ancient Grimm.
The Ancient Grimm
The Ancient Grimm is the theoretical final stage of the apparition lifespan.
Details are unclear on how the Ancient Grimm came to be, but it is a generally accepted fact that these instances of apparitions are likely hundreds, if not thousands of years old.
The Ancient Grimm are generally only observed residing within the Neverlands areas. They don't seem to respond to most of the more common stimuli the apparitions react to and instead follow their logic, which is, for now, incomprehensible to modern science.
It is a commonly accepted fact that the Ancient Grimm seems to have some level of intelligence, being able to judge their chances of survival and engage in some degree of planning.
A significant surge in negative emotions, however, has been shown to cause them to move, as displayed by the Fall of Beacon, as well as the Breach of Mantle.
The commonly discovered strains of the Ancient Grimm are:
The Goliaths - the land-based Ancient Grimm that have been sighted on the continents of Solitas and Sanus.
The Leviathans - the sea-based Ancient Grimm. Last known recorded sighting in 790 E.A within the ocean region of The Depths. Multiple unconfirmed sailor sightings since then.
The Behemoths- the land-based reptile-esque Ancient Grimm that can be seen roaming the Neverlands areas of Vacuo.
There are likely other undiscovered types of the Ancient Grimm, like the unconfirmed reports of spider-like Ancient Grimm in the Menagerie area. The nature of the Neverlands makes it near impossible to detect any of the types possibly existing in the deeper layers.
All known types of the Ancient Grimm seem to share multiple common traits:
Extreme Durability - It is generally accepted fact that the Ancient Grimm are highly resilient. The last known confrontation with The Goliath happened during Breach of Mantle. As per data available, 126 individuals laid down their lives to kill one of The Goliath.
Intelligence - It's unknown how intelligent the Ancient Grimm are, but the fact that they don't act on instinct and seem to be able to judge their survival chances indicates it's there. The Leviathans also seem to be able to avoid research and military vessels, if the sailor sightings are to be taken as fact.
High-density of The Grimm - An Ancient Grimm accelerates the accumulation of The Grimm exponentially, poisoning the land with each step.
Hard-to-define behavioral patterns - Most of the Ancient Grimm seem to stay within The Neverlands, but their behavior is a mystery. Some have been observed to move between specific locations for no apparent reason, while others will actively hunt down regular Grimm in the area. The behavior of the Ancient Grimm has puzzled most scientists for ages.
In more than one way, the Ancient Grimm remain a mystery. The common course of action when encountering one of the Ancient Grimm is to avoid confrontation unless necessary firepower and manpower is available.
The Unknown & The Myth
Due to the elusive nature of The Grimm, the exact specifics of the threat are still unknown, despite humanity having faced it since the dawn of Ever After.
The unknown nature of the apparitions has caused many rumors and folk tales to spread, whether unscientific rumors, conspiracy theories, or cryptozoological fakes.
The Creatures of Grimm do feature in multiple ancient myths, but the validity of the said mythos is impossible to determine. Each region has its own tales of unconfirmed sightings (collectively called Fables) as well as legends. However, there's no scientific basis in the mythological concepts like the Evergrimm. And the cryptozoological sightings like the Kingdom of Mistral's The Wanderer almost always turn out to be elaborate hoaxes. The majority of the tales like that should, by all accounts, be taken with a grain of salt.
