Some days are better than others, but today was a bad anxiety day. It got me up before my alarm because I was so nervous over nothing at all (literally it had 0 impact on my life.)

It prevented me from getting any school work done, and over all just severely worsened my day..

there is a difference between "i'm scared to do X because im afraid of judgement or being wrong" vs. "i'm scared of X because it confuses me/doesnt meet my needs." in autistic people, these can occur at the same time; but the former is probably caused by the latter... which is made worse by the trauma (ableism, abuse, etc) in our lives... and unfortunately, a lot of professionals don't realize this, so they blame all the struggle on poor self esteem alone.

so now, if you're wondering if your anxiety is linked to being autistic, here are some questions to ask yourself:

is my anxiety less severe if i'm in a familiar situation? do i feel comforted when i know what to expect?

is my anxiety made worse by communication styles (like small talk) that dont make sense to me?

are things that are usually distressing for me easier when they are explained in ways i understand?

is my ability to do things without distress related to how sensory friendly a space is? can i do X in a quiet, calm room, but not a loud, bright one?

do i feel better when i fidget? am i calmer in places where i know i have somewhere comfy to sit or something i like to eat?

where did i learn to judge myself for this? do these judgements sound like ableism against autistic people? (ex: they're so annoying, they never stop talking about [intense interest])

these are based on my own experiences, so they may not work for everyone but. learning how my anxiety connects to being autistic and experiencing ableism has allowed me to employ coping skill that are actually effective, and i want others to be able to do the same.

The sheer boomer nonsense of my retired father calling our top-choice house “too plain” in a disdainful tone like some kind of rich aristocrat (he is in fact a burly six-four denim-wearing capital-D Dad) when it would actually be the nicest house I’ve ever lived in, INCLUDING the weird goofy 70s split level he lived in for 30 years, which was literally his last experience buying a house in 1990 - a house full of Egyptian wallpaper and BLUE SHAG CARPET

Yes I suppose houses are staged to be plain in comparison nowadays but I suspect he doesn’t even know what he means when he says this

I think this is elder craftsman speak for “this is one those ticky-tacky pick-your-own-lot contemporary box builds and the owners didn’t select any fancy options when they chose all middle sliders in a 3D modeling program” but. Again. I must emphasize. If we can get them to accept an offer, this will be the materially nicest house I have ever lived in and it will have like… no structural flaws. None. So i mean.

I honestly think he couldn’t come up with anything substantially Wrong Enough to point at it with his House Touring Flashlight and go “there’s yer problem right there,” (and because the whole process of house buying is enough to make anyone nuts, especially a shy, neurotic, certifiably Weird Tool Dad) he just looked at the mid-tier trim and boring carpet and started making distressed bear noises
