I was a member of a trotskyist organization for about a year, before I left due to life circumstances. I was a left-liberal before, and this group radicalized me. they were staunchly anti-ml, anti-anarchist, and i have been considering the org as perhaps not quite so good, especially since i find myself agreeing with all that you have to say. if it contributes to having a nice time on the computer, i would like to hear your criticisms of trotskyism and/or modern trotskyist orgs?

alright so i have a few different critiques of trotskyism and trotskyists--both theoretical and practical. the primary theoretical critique i have based on trotsky's own writings is that the idea of 'permanent revolution' is completely idealistic nonsense. it rests on incorrect assertions that marx & engels made about the global nature of socialist revolution--assertions that were already visibly incorrect when trotsky was pushing the theory of permanent revolution, not just with the benefit of hindsight. ironically, a lot of the things about the USSR that trotskyists love to criticise the most (the process of collectivization, socialist adventurist interventions) are things that trotsky was the fiercest advocate of all for!

i also think in practice a lot of trotskyite organizations in the imperial core--having defined themselves in huge part by their opposition to the USSR--have historically served as useful stooges for imperialist interests. whether they like it or not, the more energy they dedicate to their public and vocal criticisms (however correct, mind!) of socialist states, the more amenable and compatible and non-threatening their positions become to imperialist hegemony. this is (imo) even sillier in the present day, after the tragic¹ dissolution of the USSR; trotskyite tendencies are positioning themselves against something which no longer functionally exists as a global political force. relitigating the Evils of Stalinism (as a matter of political line and not as a productive conversation about what modern socialist movements can learn from the failures of the USSR) seventy years after the fact is a political project founded on shadowboxing.

finally, in my personal experience, i have found that trotskyist orgs are much more sectarian and unwilling to work or communicate cross-tendency than anarchist or ML orgs. again--this is partially because a lot of 'trotskyism', especially in the modern day, has less to do with anything that trotsky wrote or did and more to do with performative rejection of the USSR (which, i cannot stress enough, no longer exists!). but like, i've seen more ML-anarchist cooperation in actual organizing on the ground than i've seen trotskyist cooperation with either of those tendencies. a lot of the major ones i've had any experience with also tend to have longstanding and entrenched organizational issues.

tldr: permanent revolution is a silly idea, trotskyist orgs have tended to align with imperialist foreign policy, modern trotskyist orgs tend to be hypersectarian newspaper sale platforms with entrenched leadership issues

¹ i'm still planning to make a full post about this at some point but you do not have to be a late Soviet apologist or a marxist-leninist or even a socialist to recognise that the collapse of the USSR and the resulting period of shock therapy caused mass amounts of human suffering and tragedy btw.

Imagine: Reconnecting w/Rick

The Rick you’d known was abrasive, manipulative, and apathetic. He only had one goal, he had very little that had truly mattered.

Your relationship was one of chaos, of pure attraction and rampant selfishness. You both lived live to the fullest, breaking ties, making enemies and not truly trusting anyone. There was a love that you both shared that was fast and loose. The both of you could lose yourselves on benders that wouldn’t stop if it weren’t for an enemy shooting at you or the Galactic federation crashing a party.

It had ended when you’d wanted something deeper than an unrestrained affair, something deeper than partying until one of you got shot, than saving each other only to return to the same dangers. He hadn’t felt the same, clouded by his past and the inability to let go and move on. He couldn’t give you what you wanted, he wouldn’t change for anyone.

Or so you thought. It had been years since you’d seen him, his long hair now stuck out, shorter than before, the stubble on his face replaced with a clean shave, and his vest was nowhere to be found. Instead a white scientist coat replaced it, and he wore khaki pants. He looked older yes, but the bags under his eyes had disappeared, he looked good.

Nothing could’ve prepared you for what he’d say, the way his face softened as he saw you. He quickly crossed the room to where you were, stopping infront of you and his hands beginning to widen for a hug. But he quickly settled his hands down.

You decide to initiate the hug, and you hear him release a breath he’d been holding into your hair and wraps a hand around you, resting his hand on your waist.

“Hi.. it’s been a while.” He says a bit awkwardly as you both step apart, the hand that had rested on your hip now held one of your hands, he softly massaged his thumb on your palm.

“You look good.” You say, giving him a gentle smile. The smile spreads to his face, and he compliments your appearance as well, “you haven’t aged at all day..”

“I uh.. went back… home I mean, to my family, or uh.. a version of them I guess, I’ve been living there for a while now.” He tells you, and the surprise on your face is palpable. “I know, I found him, Rick prime, I finally got him.” Mixed emotions churned in your stomach, but the overwhelming relief that he was okay was triumphant. You gave him a small smile, “I’m glad you’re okay, it couldn’t have been easy.”

An imperceptible look was on his face but he gave a weak smile, and continued to softly hold your hand.

“Would you want to grab a drink?”

guys guuuys so i live on a very narrow street in the city of Baltimore between two large high-traffic streets. It’s the smallest a street can be to not be considered an alley: it’s one way, cars can’t park on the sides, and kinda dark. Last year we got ZERO trick or treaters. I had to sit on the corner of one of the bigger streets to give things out. But this year i was determined. I took out a chair, put on my warmest flannel bat costume, stuck satchel in a doggie costume and sat outside. One little old lady came out to give satchel treats. “I don’t think we’ll get many this year.” She said. I agreed but stayed out.

And uhm. 🥹 a neighbor came out from across the street and introduced himself. He just moved in. He was happy to see me sitting out cause he wasn’t sure if kids would knock (and they generally don’t, tbh.) so he also set up a table and chair and sat outside.

And then another neighbor came out.

And then another.

Guys we were flagging down groups of kids walking by. Yelling “WE GOT CANDY! WE GOT TRICKS AND TREATS!” on our block six-seven entire houses came out to sit on their stoops and give out candy! We got TONS of kids! And people talked and got to know each other!! Because i sat outside first!!!!!

And at the end of the night, when everyone was going inside and pulling in their chairs, the new neighbor told me thanks for sitting outside, that I started it all. And like. Waaaughjghghgbg. I’m so happy.

Having seen a fair amount of discussion about differing ways in which transfems and transmascs get mistreated, specifically in feminist and feminist-adjacent circles, I'd like to contribute what I've noticed as a trans woman. (Feel free to chime in with your own experiences if you've observed different patterns.)

Basically: In overtly TERFy circles, transfems tend to get more blatant hostility, while transmascs tend to get more superficially sympathetic gaslighting. In ostensibly trans-positive circles, it's the other way around.

See, TERFs explicitly view trans women as male and trans men as female. They feel actively threatened by trans women, whom they view as male infiltrators. So TERFs tend to respond with guns blazing because they feel like they're on the defensive against patriarchy. But they feel misguided pity for trans men, whom they view as defectors to be passive-aggressively coaxed back to the dyke side (in the case of trans men who are into women) or back to womanhood more generally (in the case of gay trans men).

Don't get me wrong; it's by no means an absolute rule. There's some misguided pity for trans women and some overt hostility toward trans men. In both cases it's often framed as concern for gay men: TERFs like to fret over all the poor feminine "boys" and "men" being transed by homophobic authority figures (parents, doctors, etc.), and to accuse gay trans men of fetishizing and coercing gay cis men (which is funny because it's the one context in which they claim concern about sexual victimization of men or acknowledge that "women" can be predatory). I've also seen overt mockery and disgust for trans men who've undergone medical transition (specifically when the ableist body shaming goes from "oh no, the poor dear" to "ew gross, everyone point and laugh") or who are framed as active traitors instead of mere brainwashed pawns. But the general trend still seems to be that when dealing with TERFs, trans women are more likely to be attacked as open enemies, while trans men are more likely to be approached as potential marks for radfem reeducation.

Now if you're dealing with feminists who at least pay lip service to Woke Intersectional Social Justice (as opposed to old-school second-wave radfeminism), you have a better chance if you're trans. But even progressives can be and often are transphobic, so if they do turn on you, they're likely to take the opposite tack from what TERFs do. In this case trans men are more likely to face open hostility—though as with radfems, it's still because this crowd sees trans men as traitors emulating toxic masculinity. Meanwhile, trans women are more likely to be ostensibly praised as some of the most important oppressed people who need our help, but that's more just about the idea of trans women. Consciously or not, they're still likely to think of a transfem who's insufficiently ladylike as a man on some level. So they're often overly suspicious of actual trans women in practice.

And of course, transfems and transmascs once again get pitted against each other in these situations, and nobody wins.

air force wong and rick and unity's relationship summarised for my simple self

unity left rick bc it wanted to focus on its work instead of the lifestyle it has when it's with rick.

rick was so hurt by this that he attempted suicide.

after that failed, he ghosted unity and cut off all contact.

fast forward a few seasons, rick is searching for rick prime again. unity hears about this and tries reaching out to rick to offer support bc it still cares.

rick ignored all its attempts to contact him.

unity acts drastically, appearing on rick's home planet and country and assimilating a chunk of the population to get rick's attention.

rick finds out about this and sees it as a violation of his boundaries and reacts negatively, formulating something to repel unity and cutting off all the assimilated bodies it has on earth.

unity is hurt by this but still needs rick's help to release the bodies properly. rick declines until he finds out that it's necessary to get its help.

after the threat is averted, rick is open to seeing unity more but it feels betrayed and hurt by rick's actions against it and cuts rick off itself.

basically for once rick wasn't entirely in the wrong but dr wong was so quick to blame him when it was a miscommunication between two hurt beings and it UPSETS me.

it is becoming Increasingly Clear to me that i can no longer be taken out into public because i will start doing to fonts what jirt would do to the rocks and plants whilst on little walks

#the worm speaks #i'm noticing that a lot of signage these days don't have small caps which is a bit sad but i suppose they are somewhat antiquated #most of them have just straight up all-caps and i'm like 'mmmm. would a small caps version be better here?' #the other day i was like 'what if i left everything behind to get a job at a type foundry in taiwan. what then.' #what would i bring to the table there? why a sense of western aestheticism for the latin glyphs in their fonts #combined with a lesser but probably still noteworthy knowledge of chinese calligraphy to help ensure there is a sense of unity #btwn the latin and chinese glyphs #and also kerning i would bring kerning to the table for the latin glyphs. like if we Must be monospace abt things we can do that #but on god. the number of times i download a cn script font and go 'ah.' bc the english is the Ugliest monospace serif you'll ever see #fortunately while it is a bit of work it's at least easier to match english fonts to cn ones bc there are So Many more free ones lol #the other day i was looking through a chinese font website n i was reading their ~story~ behind this one particular series #that they based off the calligraphy in these five or six Ancient Rare Books in the national palace museum #and they were like 'yes the poetry was beautiful and moving. but to a type designer the writing itself is even more attractive' #and i felt so called out. i have just the most incurable font disease on the planet lmao #the other thing i think that might be neat to bring to cn font design Would be the concept of italics #like i know that's just not a standard thing and that Makes sense bc to oblique the letters is just #like. why would you do that. it's hard to read. but the spirit of italics is to change the font style entirely whilst keeping in harmony #with the rest of the regular typeface which i think would be Neat to bring in esp since italics usually have a bit more flourish to them #the other day i also found out that fangsong is used in government documents n i was like #>:0 no wonder it has every character and variant known to man......
