High-Tech Rescue for the Kabayan Mummies in the Philippines
Ancient Kabayan "fire" mummies in Luzon, Philippines, face risk from environmental changes. Researchers use modern technology to study and preserve these Ibaloi ancestral remains.
via University of Melbourne/Phys.org, 23 January 2024: The Kabayan “fire” mummies, located in Luzon’s northern mountains, Philippines, are a testament to an ancient mummification tradition practiced by the Ibaloi people. Dating back to 200 BC, these mummies are now at risk due to environmental changes and deterioration. In 2023, a research team from the University of Melbourne, supported by the…

Fellow Travelers Timeline
(as comprehensive as i can make it. corrections/additions welcome)
1919-20 (?) - Hawk is born
based on tennis trophy which shows year 1936, and hawk's statement that he and kenny were on the tennis team in 11th grade (16/17 years old).
Tumblr media
also date on the paperweight (1937) that hawk says kenny picked out on their senior trip. spring or fall though? if spring (usual for a senior trip, just before graduation), it would mean hawk graduated HS in 1937, b. 1919. (thanks, @lestatscunt!)
Tumblr media
June 6, 1930 - Tim is born, on Staten Island, NY
birthdate/place shown on army application in ep 5
Gemini, with moon in Libra
>>> With a Gemini Sun Libra Moon, emotional equilibrium is hard for you to maintain in a world of constant flux and tension. Since you are not responsible for the woes and upsets of those around you, you should not feel so duty-bound to assuage their wounds or mediate every conflict that happens to come your way.
>>> your natural diplomacy, extraordinary perception and insight can all be applied creatively in such fields as politics, social work, and the mass media.
>>> your extreme open-mindedness would probably enable you to almost any life-style. You have a universal quality about you that transcends culture, religion, ideology, or any other barrier that divides mankind.
Fall 1937 - Spring 1941 - Hawk attends "Penn", presumably the University of Pennsylvania. (assuming hawk b. 1919)
(this is very very long, the rest is under the cut)
December 7, 1941 - bombing of Pearl Harbor, US enters WWII
??? - Hawk joins the army (along with Kenny), and is sent to Europe.
January 9 – August 15, 1945 - Battle of Luzon, where Kenny dies.
September 2, 1945 - Japan surrenders, US exits WWII
February, 1949 - Hawk starts working at the State Department
Hawk says in 1x04 (Dec 1953) that he's been working at the State Dept for "four years and ten months".
"I came out of the war with four assets: degree from Penn, a hero's war record, no particular political ideology, and a passing acquaintance with three languages. Throw in a talent for prevaricating and a taste for travel and fine clothes, you have the makings of a competent, mid-level Foreign Service bureaucrat."
Fall 1948 - Spring 1952 - Tim attends Fordham University, graduating with a degree in political science and history.
1951 - Hawk starts work for the Bureau of Congressional Relations
Tim mentions Hawk's been working there for two years during their meeting on the bench.
1952 - Tim works "the New York campaign" (presumably for Eisenhower).
1952/3? - Tim interns for three months at the Star, in the mailroom.
November 4, 1952 - Election Night, Eisenhower (R) wins the presidency. Tim/Hawk first meet and are instantly smitten. (ep 1)
February 16, 1953 to March 10, 1954 - McCarthy Hearings, part 1.
The first consisted of a series of hearings conducted by McCarthy, as the subcommittee’s chairman, throughout 1953 and early 1954 in which McCarthy alleged Communist influence within the press and the federal government, including the State Department, the U.S. Army, and the Government Printing Office.
March 5, 1953 - Stalin dies.
Late March, 1953 - Hawk/Tim second meeting
After Hawk meets Tim at the park bench, he attends a hearing where Marcus says Cohn has brought David Schine on, and then later at their lunch Senator Smith says, "McCarthy is sending Cohn and his sidekick to Europe..." This article, dated April 19, says that Cohn and Schine have been in Europe for two weeks.
Hawk mentions that it's near the end of the month, police need to make their quotas.
Tumblr media
April 27, 1953 - Executive Order 10450 signed. Hawk goes to Tim's apartment and tells him about Kenny. (ep 1)
June 6, 1953 - Tim's 23rd birthday (Hawk 'misses' it because they weren't talking for 4 weeks. belated celebration in ep 3.)
June 15, 1953 (?) - date of the newspaper Tim is reading just before he goes to visit Hawk in ep 2, where Hawk makes him write the letter to Mary. I'm choosing to believe this is a mistake on the show's part, because this would mean that Hawk has already missed Tim's birthday.
Tumblr media
June 19, 1953 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's execution. Hawk comforts Lucy about this at the end of ep 2. So, likely Hawk and Tim had their big fight very shortly before Tim's birthday, and weren't talking from end of May - end of June.
End of June, 1953 - at the end of ep 2, Tim says it's been 4 months since his last confession, making his last (proper) confession the end of Feb or beginning of March. (ie, before he meets Hawk again).
End of June or beginning of July, 1953 - weekend trip to Rehoboth Beach (ep 3)
November 1953 - G. David Schine drafted into the army (ep 3)
Christmas 1953 (ep 4)
March 16 to June 17, 1954 - Army-McCarthy Hearings (part 2) (ep 5)
The second phase involved the subcommittee's investigation of McCarthy’s attacks on the U.S. Army. Known as the “Army-McCarthy hearings,” they were broadcast on national television and they contributed to McCarthy’s declining national popularity. Five months later, on December 2, 1954, the Senate censured McCarthy.
June 6, 1954 - Tim's 24th birthday
June, 1954? - Tim/Hawk break up, Hawk proposes to Lucy (ep 5)
I believe this happens at the tail-end of the Army-McCarthy hearings, so before June 17th.
Fall, 1954 - Sen. Smith's funeral
based solely on fall foliage in this screenshot:
Tumblr media
Late Nov / Early Dec, 1954 - Tim enlists in the army
based on army application: birthdate 6/6/30, age: 24 years, 6 months
Tumblr media
Late Nov / Early Dec, 1954 - Hawk/Tim last meeting in the tower
based on the radio program Tim is listening to, which says, "Chief Counsel Roy Cohn has resigned from the committee. And Senator McCarthy, his approval ratings plummeting, faces censure or even expulsion from the Senate."
Tim leaves for Fort Dix, for training, but is later stationed at Fort Polk, in Vernon Parish, LA. (thanks, @jesterlesbian!)
Tumblr media
December 2, 1954 - the Senate censures McCarthy.
Summer or Fall 1956? - Tim's letter (that lucy burns) (ep 6)
Flashbacks, for context:
"Since he's giving up his apartment, Hawk insists on having a lair in the woods." // "I'm surprised that he finally agreed."
Lucy lets contractor go. // "Give me a baby."
Hawk is reading the Bristol Daily Courier, a paper located in Bristol, PA, a town in Bucks County, outside Philadelphia. I can't find any info on the one headline I can read though ("Heath Carlson breaks arws deadlock, locals proud"), so can't date this properly.
Tumblr media
Lucy cleaning out Hawk's apartment, finds paperweight, sees Tim drop off letter.
"I went into the Army to get away from you. I thought time and distance would help. But it hasn't." If Tim sends the letter in summer 1956, it's been a year and a half since he enlisted.
Biggest question here: did lucy ask for a baby before or after she read Tim's letter??? the flashbacks don't answer this definitively.
October, 1956? - Lucy becomes pregnant with Jackson (see note under April 1957)
October 23 – November 4, 1956 - Hungarian Revolution of 1956
October 23, 1956 - April 30, 1957 - Hungarian Refugee Crisis
November 8, 1956 - Operation Safe Haven commences
President Eisenhower declared that 5,000 Hungarians would be awarded visa numbers remaining under the 1953 Refugee Relief Act
Spring 1957? - Tim sends telegram. It looks like 05-??-???? to me, which doesn't really make sense if McCarthy died on May 2nd, but it's hard to make out. or maybe telegrams used the date format dd-mm-yyyy.
Tumblr media
April 1957? - Tim/Hawk first meeting, Lucy at least 5 (or 6? or 7?) months pregnant
You should feel your baby's first movements, called "quickening," between weeks 16 and 25 of your pregnancy. If this is your first pregnancy, you may not feel your baby move until closer to 25 weeks.
25 weeks ~= 6 months, and it still seems novel to her, so let's say she's approx. 6 months pregnant here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May 2, 1957 - Joe McCarthy dies.
May 6, 1957 - McCarthy's funeral. Tim's first visit to Hawk's apartment (ep 8)
June 6, 1957 - Tim turns 27.
June or July, 1957 - Jackson born (based on dates above)
Tumblr media
1958? - Kimberly is born. (estimated bc she looks the same age or older than Jackson, so assuming she's a year younger at most.)
August, 1965 - President Johnson signs a law making it a federal crime to destroy or mutilate [draft] cards.
October 15, 1965 -David Miller publicly burns his draft card, becoming the first person to be prosecuted under that law and a symbol of the growing movement against the war.
May 17, 1968 - the Catonsville Nine took 378 draft files from the draft board office in Catonsville, Maryland and burned them in the parking lot. (inspo for Tim & co. thanks @brokendrums!)
November 1968 - ep 6. Hawk is 48, Tim is 38, Jackson is 11.
based on this newspaper screenshot when Hawk is talking to Marcus on the phone about Tim
Tumblr media
November 1968 - May 1970 (earliest) - Tim in prison. (he says in ep 7 he was in prison for a year and a half. this assumes he went to prison right away, but it could have been several months later if he was awaiting trial/sentencing.)
1970? - After prison, Tim moves to San Francisco and gets his counseling degree.
Mid-late 1970s - Tim earns his C-SWCM qualifications, requiring:
A Bachelor’s degree in social work from a graduate program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education
Documentation of at least three (3) years and 4,500 hours of paid, supervised, post-BSW professional experience in an organization or agency that provides case management services
Current state BSW-level license or an ASWB BSW-level exam passing score.
nb. because Tim already had his bachelors (from Fordham, majoring in history), I could see him entering a much-accelerated BSW program, transfering a lot of credits from his previous degree. That would give him maybe 2 more years of university, plus the required 3 years of post-BSW work = 5 years minimum before he earns that business card.
February 4, 1977 - Fleetwood Mac's album Rumours is released, including the 1970s Tim/Hawk anthem, Go Your Own Way
October, 1978 - Jackson dies
Tumblr media
November 27, 1978 - Harvey Milk assassinated
May 22, 1979 - Harvey's 49th birthday (celebrated in ep 7)
1986 - ep 8
how long was Hawk in San Francisco? Timelines for the events below may be fudged in the show, bc I doubt he was there for 5 months.
March, 1986 - Roy Cohn's 60 Minutes interview, which the gang watches in ep 4.
April 15, 1986 - US bombs Libya. in the first episode you can hear reference to this on the radio, before Hawk leaves for San Francisco. (thanks @aliceinhorrorland93!)
July 27, 1986 - In California, Gov. George Deukmejian vetoes a bill that would have defined AIDS as a physical handicap calling for entitlement to protection under the state's civil rights laws.
August 2, 1986 - Roy Cohn dies (ep 8)
Late 1986? - the fundraising gala that Tim crashes, shortly after Cohn's death.
September 1986 - The State Legislature has passed another bill [in addition to the one vetoed on July 27]. Mr. Deukmejian, a Republican running for re-election, has indicated that he will probably veto the bill. (nb, this is likely the bill that Tim & co want to pressure the governor to sign).
October 11, 1987 - AIDS memorial quilt first displayed (ep 8)
--
this was a collaborative effort! many thanks to @ishipallthings for many of these details, as well as @startagainbuttercup , @alorchik, @itsalinh and others in the FT discord!

A fear of spiders, or arachnophobia, seems quite common around the world. Last year, a team of researchers published a global database showing the pervasiveness of arachnophobic sentiments in media based on their investigation of a decade of online newspaper coverage from over 80 countries. These fears remain even though less than 0.5 percent of spider species can actually harm humans through their venom, and most of these species live far from humans anyway.
But there are some exceptions—and my home country, the Philippines, is one of them.
One of the authors of the study, entomologist Aimee Lynn Barrion-Dupo, is also from the Philippines. In an interview, she explained that unlike most countries where spiders were depicted as sources of venom and harm, in the Philippines spiders figured in news reportage mostly as pets or as participants in the popular pastime of laro ng gagamba (literally “game of spiders”). The game involves catching spiders, taking care of them, and making them fight other spiders.
I know the game very well. When I was a child growing up in Laguna province in the Philippines, I played it with other kids in my neighborhood.
My father taught at the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Forestry, which was located on Mount Makiling, some 60 kilometers away from Manila. Those of us who grew up on the slopes of the mountain would go into the forests to look for the fiercest, strongest, and most unique spiders. We would then house them in medicine bottles or matchboxes, and feed them ants, grasshoppers, and other insects—until it was time to play.
When two of us were ready to fight, we would place our spiders on the opposite ends of a stick of walis tingting, a kind of broom. Another person, who acted as a referee, was usually asked to hold the stick. Then, we’d nudge our spiders to walk toward one another and fight. The winner of the wrestling match was decided very quickly, sometimes within seconds or at most a few minutes. It ended when one of the spiders was killed or incapacitated, or when a spider either fell off the stick or tried to run away more than once.
We had names for the different spiders we commonly caught: gagambang botchog (round spider), gagambang pari (priest-like spider), gagambang ekis (spider with an X). Sometimes we would give them nicknames based on their appearances: gagambang pula (red spider) or Voltes V (after a Japanese anime character).
Could it be that this game desensitized us to spiders, making us less fearful of them in contrast to many other parts of the world?
This question interests me not just because of nostalgia for the spiders of my childhood but as an anthropologist who today explores human entanglements with other species. I’m fascinated by how we perceive and live with other creatures, including animals we pit against each other and play with—from cockfighting in Bali to bullfighting in Spain to cricket fighting in China.
When it comes to widespread fears surrounding spiders, a closer look reveals a more complicated picture of human responses and interactions with these creatures. The arachnologist David Wise, for instance, surveyed folk tales from North America to Africa that cast spiders in a positive light, leading him to conclude that not all societies are arachnophobic.
In the Philippines, a handful of scholarly accounts of laro ng gagamba depict people’s close relationships with spiders. Some of these detailed accounts remind me of my childhood days, while others go beyond my own experiences, showing how diverse and sophisticated the practice is across the country.
One example comes from an ethnographic account by cultural anthropologist Ty Matejowsky, who researched spider wrestling in Pangasinan province in Northern Luzon in the early 2000s. He recounts how boys and young men collect, train, and play with spiders, often for money. Although my experience of laro ng gagamba didn’t involve placing bets, Matejowsky sees the game as an entry point for many Filipinos into “gambling culture.” (He also presents the practice as exclusive to boys and men, but I remember playing it with neighbors who were girls.)
Matejowsky also details how players attempt to heal their spiders who may be hurt in battle. “As surprising as it may seem,” he notes, “steps can be taken to rehabilitate injured spiders for an eventual return to wrestling.” For instance, players place the leaves of ampalaya (bitter gourd), thought to have restorative properties, in the spider’s box for a few days before slowly resuming the regular diet of “insects and bits of meat and rice.”
Barrion-Dupo, with two biology colleagues, conducted a survey of 300 spider game players in Northern Mindanao from 2014 to 2015 that revealed more details of the practice. Gambling on laro ng gagamba matches, the investigators found at the time, could involve sums of up to 10,000 pesos (around US$180).
Fascinatingly, the researchers also recorded various substances people fed to the spiders to prepare for a fight. The list included various vitamins and supplements, dextrose, coconut water or meat, duck egg soup, Jujube plum fruit (Ziziphus jujuba), milk, honey, energy drinks, and even human breastmilk. The gamers usually placed these substances on cotton balls and left them in the boxes where the spiders were kept.
These details show that more than just a game, spider wrestling in the Philippines involves care and intimacy between humans and spiders. Matejowsky describes it as an “attachment … that approaches what some feel for more conventional pets.”
Today laro ng gagamba continues to be played in rural areas in some parts of the country. Barrion-Dupo sees the spider game as offering children “first steps in science and natural history,” ultimately contributing to an appreciation not just for spiders but for the environment at large.
However, the research by Barrion-Dupo and her colleagues also shows the game has a potentially detrimental impact on the populations of various spider species. Gamers usually extract mature reproductive females from the wild; female spiders, as it turns out, are more ferocious than their male counterparts. The researchers call for policies to restrict the game to prevent species decline.
As far as I know, spiders are not often included in animal rights discourses in the Philippines. (Matejowsky’s article noted spiders are considered “pests, not animals.”) However, these attitudes may change in the future; some people are already discussing the need to expand animal welfare concerns to include insects, spiders, and other invertebrates.
Even without active intervention, however, the game already seems to be declining in popularity.
When I recently returned to the neighborhood where I grew up, I was told that none of the kids ventured into the forests like my friends and I used to. During the pandemic, people were forbidden to go outdoors, and many public green spaces were off-limits for recreational activities. Plus, the advent of electronic gadgets and digital technologies has meant that children today, whether they live in urban neighborhoods or mountainous communities, are far more likely to be familiar with Spider-Man than the spiders that share their environments.
Regardless of the ultimate fate of laro ng gagamba, however, I hope our familiarity and fascination with spiders will continue.

Japanese attempts at invading early Spanish colonial-era Philippines
The earliest written mention of fears of a Japanese invasion in the broadest sense of the word appears in a Memorial to the Council of 1586, in which there is speculation within Manila that the Japanese wakō [i.e. pirate gangs] might have greater ambitions beyond mere plunder: they "make a descent almost every year, and, it is said, with the intent of colonizing Luçon [Luzon]." That never happened, but in 1591 the first proper invasion scare began when the Philippines entered the consciousness of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98). By means of a series of brilliant military campaigns, Hideyoshi had reunified Japan after the chaos of a century of civil war, and he now set his mind on overseas expeditions.
… Farandaquiemon was a Japanese Christian merchant from Sakai called Harada Kiemon. He had visited Manila on several occasions, most recently in 1591, and, having looked at its defences, he returned to Japan convinced that the city could be taken easily. Together with his colleague Hasegawa Sonin, described as a "court favourite," Kiemon persuaded Hideyoshi to write his arrogant letter to the governor of the Philippines. Hideyoshi's military strength and his unification of Japan had become known in Manila, so the bombastic letter begins with a reference to these military triumphs and his miraculous birth that had augured Hideyoshi's destiny to rule other nations. The threats appeared later in the missive: "If an ambassador is not sent, I shall unfurl my banner and send an army against that country to conquer it with a multitude of men; so that that country will repent at not having sent me an ambassador."
The Spanish sent back a reply dated 1 May 1592 that was delivered to Hideyoshi by the Dominican friar Juan Cobo. Cobo traveled to Japan with a Chinese Christian called Antonio López, who appears to have been sent as a spy. Cobo and López met Hideyoshi at Nagoya Castle, the military base in Kyushu built for the invasion of Korea.
… On 1 June 1593, López was questioned closely under oath about what he had seen and done in Japan, with most of the questions relating to his knowledge of any Japanese plans for an attack on the Philippines. López said first that he had heard that Hideyoshi had entrusted the conquest to "Kunquyn," which probably refers to Harada Kiemon. There was also a possible motive, because "[i]n Japon there is universal talk of the abundance of gold in this land. On this account, the soldiers are anxious to come here; and are coming, as they do not care to go to Core [Korea], which is a poor country." López also stated that the Japanese had interrogated him about the military strength of the Philippines. He seems to have tried misinformation on that point, even though his initial reply had caused some arrogant amusement: "The [Japanese] laughed when they heard Antonio say that these islands contained four or five thousand Spaniards. They said that the defense of these islands was merely a matter for jest, for one hundred of the Japanese were worth two or three hundred of us."
Lopez … also had overheard the Japanese discussing the likelihood of the Philippines being reinforced when under attack. "[F]our months are needed to go from Mexico to Luçon," said López, "and on this account but few soldiers could come from Mexico. Japan is not more than twenty days' journey distant, and therefore it would be well for us to appreciate this fact." In terms of Harada Kiemon’s personal ambitions, everyone López had met believed that when the Philippines were conquered he would become the governor.
Excerpt from Wars and Rumors of Wars: Japanese Plans to Invade the Philippines, 1593–1637 by Stephen Turnbull, published in 2016

This is the receipt user itssmelau sent me as supposed proof that she paid for "Laura's" funeral services:
Tumblr media
At first she sent me an even more blurred out photo, claiming she did not have a copy of the unblurred photo lol so I asked her to send me the exact picture she sent @iamjustthinkin, which can be seen above. Check the blurred name and address of the funeral home.
Signal Village is in Taguig City, which is in Luzon:
Tumblr media
You're not going to find a Signal Village in Davao.
Google funeral services near Signal Village, Taguig and this is the results on the first page, plus the corresponding FB page of the funeral home:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So there you are. If that receipt is to be believed, then Laura Mae Deramas who is from Matina Davao, which is in Mindanao south of the PH, should be interred right now in Taguig, Metro Manila, in Luzon, north of the PH.
She is now arguing that the name of the funeral home is not "Amorebella" and that it has "two E's", though why she can't just outright tell me the name at this point is beyond me. She is also arguing that there are many places in Davao called "Signal Village", though if you try Googling "Signal Village Davao" you will still be taken to Signal Village Taguig, and no result will appear whatsoever for signal village davao.
This is not the first time the address on her document she presents as "proof" have not matched where she and her family actually lives. Here is a picture of the supposed letter from the hospital where she claims her mother was admitted a few weeks ago:
Tumblr media
University of Perpetual Help is in Las Piñas, also in Luzon, far from SPMC where she said her mother was admitted in her original post:
Tumblr media
She is taking advantage of the fact that most people on here are Americans/not Filipinos and has little knowledge about where places are here in the PH and wouldn't know where to start searching if they did want to verify things.
I urge everyone to please rethink about your support for this blog, or at least consider whether it's wise to believe their claims that the original owner is dead.
Tagging the people I see that she usually tags or is still continuing to tag on her post, I'm so very sorry for bothering you with this: @beserkerjewel @fluoresensitive @beaky-peartree @robotpussy @capricornpropaganda @closet-keys @lunabisexual @afro-elf @bihet-dragonize

Envy: Azusa and Hanako TW: Self-harm, Mutilation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Heleborus Verse
An alternate universe held in the world of Diabolik lovers, located in Shinagawa, Japan. Timeline dates to the early 90s-early 2000s upon the awakening of Hanako. In this verse, vampires, ghosts, ghouls and other demons may have different purposes. While, in this world all Sakamaki, Mukami's and Tsukinami's dress as if they have never left the Victorian era. The world around them on the other hand is riddled with a dark aesthetic and an old timey futuristic approach on Victorian modernism.
Azusa Mukami
A cruel fate of silent love, failing to ever confess her feelings for the somber bleeding Luzon. His care striking the heart of the dove upon her arrival, Azusa is under intensive care, (Azusa is a mental Asylum patient and is treated for heavy forms of PTSD, with recent good behavior he is able to live back with his family)Ruki, Kou and Yuma are under watch of the poor boy, who wishes he had the strength to beat his condition. You see Azusa's trauma induced PTSD result in panic attacks, these panic attacks cause him to harm himself. Though enjoying the pain, on numerous occasions have almost costed him his life. Hanako on the other hand is appointed to be his new care taker, with Kou on tour and Ruki and Yuma busy with their own endeavors caring for Azusa has become a stress factor for the Mukami household. Hanako meets Azusa only with a straight jacket, his sweet demeanor and calming behavior is refreshing to see, but the only rule for her was to never remove the jacket from him. Their budding relationship grew, Hanako herself was never able to understand the feelings that she might have had for him, often mistaking this crush as a sickness that needed to be cured. Azusa was rendered immobile, not able to take off his straight jacket and being under constant supervision felt painful for him. The ability to not feel as weak, a strong sense of covetousness would settle in envying his brothers in ways he could not indulge, Azusa was never a monster.... only ever wanted to be strong and in drinking her blood over time, gave him just what he wished for, but only at a cost of hurting someone he cared for. Ruki on the other hand started to notice that Hanako's blood was starting to cure him, but the more he drank the more.....viscious he became, what felt like a burst of energy twisted into brutal rage, and like steroids acted as an addicting drug with no bounds, Ruki forbade the two from ever seeing each other again. In fear of what his kind brother would turn into, Ruki had placed Azusa in a confined space, driven by the ideal of wanting to be stronger, raged by the toxins within her blood, became violent hurting his brothers, attacking Hanako as her cries and screams for help were muffled by the sounds of blood which leaked from her neck. Azusa snaps from his fit, only to see the damaged that he caused and in tears cry over the body in which he destroyed. The ending of this story ends with forgiveness from the doll who is now free of her curse, turning into a spirit who later says one last goodbye.

Tbh I am curious about the history of circumcision in the Philippines because it seems like one of those things the Spanish would want to suppress as a sign of crypto-Islam but they didn’t. Iirc I remember reading something about how early on the Spanish mistook some people in Luzon as being Muslim due to it but were informed it’s an independent practice.
Like, the fact that it’s near universally practiced makes it seem like it was probably done by mestizo families during the Spanish era so like did “Filipino” (in the Spanish colonial context “Filipino” meant criollo born in the Philippines rather than the Americas) families also take it up?

WIP of what was going to be this month's bird character, but I just couldn't make the colours work the way I wanted them to, so she's going to be saved until I find a palette that works. Regardless, I figured I'd post what I got so far before diving into the other concept I had in mind for this bird.
Luzon the Seam-Ripper was an ancient mythological figure in Atmos, blessed by giants with the power to walk between realms. She acted as an ambassador for her universe, sharing magic and technology while preventing attacks from other worlds. Arygyn the Skeelur was once a friend of hers, right up until she vanished from existence one day, taking most, if not all memories of her with her. All that's left now are ruins, echoes and relics.
And yes, she is a giant preying mantis.

introducing some of my ocs. we have oxy mitol, taupo and toto ruzon, mimas rad, io corona and messier landsat. tried to follow their respective planets' naming motifs and design conventions, but man is it hard lol.
a bit more on them below the cut
oxy mitol is from faram obious. upper middle class, kinda spoiled and way too carefree. has a resting bitchface. oxy spends her time outside of private school hanging out with friends, going to parties and skating. she doesn't care about the black hole or the tournament, she just wants to party. she's named after oxygen and mitol a glue company.
taupo ruzon (taupo volcano and luzon bleeding heart are the inspo) is from gurdon. working class, hard working, unnervingly serious and gets way too invested in talks about improving gurdon. works in a factory, spends his free time also working, occasionally goes out with colleagues to drink. he had an accident when repairing his roof, which took out his left eye.
toto ruzon (rangitoto island and luzon bleeding heart) is from gurdon. working class, friendly, naive and gentle. spends his days working as a postman. going round the city and chatting with the people while delivering post. balances out his overly serious brother and acts as the social compass. kinda regrets giving up his wings because he's short and flying makes delivery easier.
mimas rad (mimas- saturn's moon and rad the unit) was from ixal. upper class, laid back, had money handling issues and was a very provocative person. they were an influencer on the app infrared. would usually be seen making way too many make up and haul videos. if not doing that they'd be on the tabloid for causing the next scandal. short, but the platformers made them taller.
io corona (io- jupiter's moon and corona as the sun's outer atmosphere) was from ixal. middle class, eccentric, overly philosophical, charitable. she owned a house which she rented out to people. coming from a broken household she wanted people to have a better life. a very superstitious person, she would wear family heirlooms to ward off evil. tapestries were her forte.
messier landsat (messier- 110 astronomical objects and landsat 8 the satelite) was from ixal. lower middle class, snarky, easily stressed and had anger issues. while working at a space gas station as a cashier he also frequented online university in hopes of getting a better job. had multiple fights with customers over prices. would often seek advice from io and the other residents of the house. jumpsuits were the only thing he would wear.

SB19 stands for "Sound Break" to represent the group's purpose of redefining and elevating the contemporary Filipino pop music sound. The group recently announced that they are now self-managed and have established a company that aims to nurture other talents in the future as well.
fandom: A'tin pronounced as "18", SB19 says there is no (SB)19 without 18 - the fans come first. The name is also spelled like the Filipino word "atin" which means "ours" (inclusive), to mean that their group's success is their fan's success as well

The Race to Renewables
Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved. Matthew 9:17 (NIV) [1]
The day when we all are dependent on renewable energy is the day I am looking forward to. The richness of natural resources in our country can be harnessed to capture our energy and electricity from renewable sources. Underusing our potential renewable energy is a disservice to the Filipino people, which is why looking for ways to transition to clean energy sources is a race our institutions, government, and private sector must take part in. Assuredly, our country has adopted the National Renewable Energy Program which shapes how the clean energy transition will happen through a robust policy framework [2], and how the private sector will help deliver this vision. Let’s take a closer look at this program, the companies that are making waves in clean energy, and the sustainability principles upheld to make these changes a reality.
According to the Department of Energy [3], NREP signals an important strategic outline for the Philippines’ sustainable energy agenda and brings clarity to the execution of the Renewable Energy Act of 2008. This is a salient move to achieve not only national energy security, accessibility, and efficiency but also an assurance that energy comes from clean sources. Several challenges must be addressed for the policy objectives to come to fruition: infrastructure, financing, transmission and grid integration, and technology. While this is the case, NREP aims to tackle them through a dynamic plan that is reviewed regularly and considers factors such as transmission development, off-grid electrification, technology improvements, localized capacity building, and multi-stakeholder partnerships. The new iteration of the program has established a revised target of at least 35 percent of the renewable energy generation mix by 2030 and an uptake of up to 50 percent by 2040. This calls for a roadmap that enables RE projects to which the private sector is very much invited.
The big conglomerates and energy companies in the country have been contending for renewables. Aboitiz, San Miguel, Ayala, First Gen, and Meralco are the names we will continue to see in clean energy projects and investments; their vertically integrated businesses allow them to compete head-to-head. Here are some of the highlights of what they do in the renewable energy space:
Under its Cleanergy portfolio, Aboitiz Power Corporation is investing up to Php 190 billion over the next decade with a mix of solar, wind, and hydro primarily located in Luzon; being the largest operator of RE in the country, Aboitiz Power continuously develops its pipeline with the intent participating in government initiatives [4].
San Miguel Power through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Universal Power Solutions, Inc. is investing at least Php 40 billion for its nationwide project of battery energy storage system (BESS); this placement of energy storage is considered the largest and the first in the Philippines and is expected to contribute a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatt hours (mWh), enabling power grid support and addressing electricity intermittence in the country [5].
AC Energy [6] of the Ayala group envisions providing 20 GW of capacity in renewable energy by 2030, with a current investment of Php 50 billion and a 98 percent share of RE in its energy mix. Its completion of the first market-based Energy Transition Mechanism in the world allowed for the decommissioning of a coal plant in Batangas, Philippines which will eliminate 50 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. ETM has delivered at least Php 17.4 billion in transaction value, Php 7.2 billion in proceeds, and zero ‘coal plant ownership’ for the company.
First Gen invests in various renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, and wind. For solar, the company through its subsidiary, Energy Development Corporation (EDC), invested in building solar plants in Ilocos Norte with at least 6.82 megawatts of energy capacity [7]. In geothermal, EDC is considered the largest vertically integrated geothermal company in the world, with operations in 12 stations across the archipelago [8]. For hydroelectric, First Gen has the Pantabangan-Masiway Hydroelectric Power Plant in Nueva Ecija and the Agusan Mini-hydroelectric Plant in Bukidnon [9]. In wind, the EDC Burgos Wind Power, a subsidiary of EDC, operates the country’s largest wind power project in the country [10].
Meralco PowerGen currently invests in solar energy and targets to increase its RE mix by 1,500 megawatts in the coming years. The company’s maiden RE investment is through BulacanSol which is not operational with 55MW of energy capacity. Two solar projects are underway with target locations in Rizal and Ilocos Norte [11].
The collective work of the government and the private sector will push boundaries for a sustainable energy transition in the Philippines. These new initiatives for clean energy require a new mindset, systems, and approaches to build the necessary infrastructures, financing, and leadership that will lift us from the old carbon-induced energy. The race for renewables greets us all with an anticipation of a better future. I can’t wait to see a carbon-neutral Philippines.

For Myself, By Myself
Tumblr media
Hi! It's me, Ivan Dave Griño, a 21 year-old student living in the Hidden Paradise of Bukidnon or also known as San Fernando. I'm a boy with little motivation but have a bigger ambition, and I'll make sure that I will make that ambition of mine to be achieved.
I'm what you guys call talented; a master of one thing, but a jack of all trades. I'm good at sports, dancing, singing, and playing instruments, but not drawing. I am proud to say that I have accomplished many things in life that a typical student would never be able to. For example, I have traveled to Luzon three times to represent Mindanao in a dancing competition, and we have always come out on top.
I can sing, but not very well. My deep, bass-voiced manhood prevents me from hitting high notes, so the only music I can sing that is heartfelt is ballads. However, because I'm concentrating on dancing, I can say that I didn't use my singing voice to its full potential.
Tumblr media
This is my Dance Group, YoungSide a widely know Dance Group in Philippines that excels in dancing, especially in KPOP and PPOP. We have a YouTube channel with 15k subscribers. My group attained many achievements and that includes being featured in the ASAP in year 2020, noticed by a PPOP group called SB19. I'm proud to say that I've been offered many contracts to be in a PPOP group and will train in Korea for two (2) months but I declined because I will prioritize my academics over my passion in dancing, because I know that if I have a degree I can have a choice, whether to pursue my career or pursue the passion that is burning within my soul. I didn't regret making that big decision that could change my entire life.
Tumblr media
Dancing is one of my interests and hobbies, and I've spent my entire life surrounded by like-minded individuals. Dancing brings me joy, serves as a release from problems, and allows me to express my emotions and creativity. My relatives are dancers. We laugh and dance together; this is our special bond that helps us forget the difficulties we face in life and has often saved us. My interest and pastime have allowed me to save money by instructing a large number of people. I've found true happiness with this, something that not everyone can. It is my savior and has helped me avoid depression in the past. I use my skill at dancing to express myself and impress others.
My entire existence is centered around dancing, but that doesn't mean I neglect my academics; in fact, I'm proud to say that I've been a consistent college honor student from my first year onward. Even though it is challenging to balance academics and dancing at the same time, I was able to survive thanks to my time management abilities.
As I wrap up this blog, I can tell you all that if you have a talent, Perseverance and Time-management is the key, use it and grow. It might save you from suffering, or it might make you suffer, but either way, you will gain many life lessons and skills that a normal person cannot have. To succeed in life, you simply need to manage your time well, consider your future, and be a visionary who foresees and plans for it. Greetings, Ivan Dave Griño here from Central Mindanao University. I am a full-time dancer and part-time student.
