work anxiety really sucks because I can’t dismiss my most crazy fears as irrational because I can’t stress enough how much they’ve actually happened to me

#todays example: my boss asks me to reach out to a specific person. Anyway I've been on this site for many many years. And every year I see the funny lawyer game trending. It's always the same screenshot being tossed around on December 24th.

""Almost Christmas" means it wasn't Christmas!"

Of course, having not played this game yet, I thought it was one of the Funnie Lines from the Funnie Lawyer game.

So anyway: the year is 2021 and I finally get to playing Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright for the first time. I get to the 4th case and, after losing my mind for a bit over Edgeworth holding the gun, realise that it's a case on Christmas.

"Oh, they're going to do the Christmas meme in this one!" I say to my roommate, unknowing.

I get the the trial on the second day. Everything is building up: DL-6 trauma, Von Karma's influence on Edgeworth, and of course a "Guilty" verdict that you get no matter what.

And then I finally got to say it. I see the question and a set of answers on my screen. I'm shaking and nearly crying. I had no idea it would turn out like this. With sweaty hands I select the answer I know is correct:

We overturned the case. We get another day for an investigation. I save and quit the game for the day to process the whiplash I experienced after learning where the Funnie Meme came from.

Why 18th-Century Queer History Matters

I learned early on that that sex worker and LGBTQ+ rights are linked, but as usual, I didn't realize how far back that history stretched.

It is poignant to learn we have always seen each other as community. This article is about the queer community building social spaces for themselves in 18th-century England. The queer community and sex workers naturally gravitated to each other. We were all criminalized for a reason.

I think of the fight against FOSTA-SESTA (2018); Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson founding and maintaining STAR with earnings from sex work (1970); and seeking each other out to form a safe space in the 1700s. That's over 300 years of solidarity.

The reasons we were arm in arm 300 years ago haven't changed much. How similar does this - 17 raids from 1726-27 in England - sound to the raids that were regular occurrences in NYC in the 1960s, 200+ years later? How similar does this sound to where we might be going?

The other thing I take away from this: The more I learn, the more I realize I was denied in history class. Queer-only spaces were common enough to be their own category in 1709. 1709! I never want to hear anyone imply we sprang into existence in 1969 ever again.

Ending this post with this quote on found family. Do you ever cry thinking about our queer ancestors who built community in a society that wanted to legislate them out of existence? I do.

i am going on a road trip today, one I’m sort of dreading because at the end is a bunch of people I haven’t seen since before the pandemic and I’m worried they’ll think I changed too much or something and I’m also a little worried my car won’t make it even though it’s been much happier now that I don’t commute 3 hours a day and got all the stuff that had, in the mechanic’s words, “rotted away” (gross) but it’s fine I’m going to take it slow and reorganize and clean my car before I leave and stop at attractions and for drive through food and it will be fine

Listening to fiction podcasts with my dodgy headphones is so humiliating because when there's a long pause in what I'm listening to, I'm sat there trying to guess if it's for dramatic effect or a scene transition, or if my headphones have just decided to stop working.
