The number of times I'll ask an intern about their upcoming schedules so I know what to expect for my own schedule and they'll be like, "But I mean, if you really need me to come in more than that...."
Stop! Protect that boundary! Tell us no! Nonprofit culture can be just as toxic as corporate culture but more insidious because it dresses up its labor exploitation as ~charitable~ and ~humanitarian~! Oh, but we do this work because we care....no, we do this work because it's an emergency stopgap measure on an unjust system that's inevitably going to crash and burn! This work will absolutely take advantage of the kindness in your heart and drain you until all that's left is bitterness and cynicism.
Anyway, if you're a volunteer in social services or whatever, don't give us the inch we need to drag a mile out of you.

Zookeepers could never go on strike cause that means their beloved animal coworkers would die. The national zoo relies a lot on underpaying their zookeepers and relying on unpaid internships and volunteers. I'm sure many other zoos are like this as well. It should be a part of AZA accreditation that zookeepers are paid according to their educational and work experience. Most of these guys are required to have at least a masters. And are paid $15 an hour OR LESS. And DC isn't a cheap place to live.
The zoo lives and breathes off of the passion of these people.
I actually got to talk to the previous director (who now was directing a different big zoo) and I asked two questions:
1. How can disabled people get jobs at your zoos, what jobs would be accessible to someone like me (wheelchair user)
2. What are your plans on increasing paid internships and wages for zookeepers?
The first one she said that working with the aquatic species or small reptiles would be best, since the reptile house is accessible despite being older. She said she would think about it and get back to me (she never did, but tbf shes extremely busy and I didn't continuously ping her)
2. They've been having meetings and workgroups trying to figure out how to increase pay and paid opportunities especially for people from low-income areas, as they are less able to take unpaid internships as they need to support themselves. Zoo budgets are extremely tight even for the Smithsonian.
Now idk if that's true, I'm sure it's mostly true at least, and most of the blame is on the government for not providing more funding to these places and instead most funding goes to the military and giving the rich fat tax cuts.
It just feels like most of us in the environmental and conservation field are extremely underpaid for the work we do. And if we strike our beloved animals and environments suffer.

Living Roots Farm,
My month of June was consumed by you. A period of highs and lows, commitments and reevaluations. I expected strange and I try to go in with few expectations. I wanted structure and in a sense I got that. But so much else was falsely advertised. You were not an arts space, intentional community, healing arts center, or even a farm school. Was I naïve to believe such claims from skimming a website and a single conversation with a man. A man whose business depends on the free labor of well meaning 20 somethings. I love farming. I love the satisfaction of growing one’s own food, getting my hands in the dirt. Feeling the stings and aches of hard work. That’s what I wanted to return to. But that’s not what I felt here. I saw a place built on conflicting principles. Values of intentional community and social change clashing with a corporate structure. I felt the confusion of my fellow apprentices who all in their own way wanted to leave, felt duped, exploited, frustrated. The division of labor was far from equitable. One man’s ego, under the guise of experience, trumping anyone else’s input. The support this community of apprentices and workers had for each other was astounding. I wanted to be a part of that. Who wouldn’t? I was so ready to commit. I said goodbye to the comfort of my transient home life. I was ready to commit to long distance with my partner. Ready to make the hard choice. But in two weeks I realized I didn’t want to. Not a matter of “could I” anymore, I knew I could. But so much had changed in the time between the plans being made and their fruition. So I made the other hard choice: to quit. And I told myself I value that. Knowing when to quit. Knowing when you’re boundaries are not being respected. But maybe that’s just what I’m telling myself. Who knows? One can’t expect to embrace situations the same way year to year. In the end I feel vindicated in my values. In the reasons I love farming and good food. Producing for my own self sufficiency and sharing with those I care about. In the reasons and ways I care about my community. I believe that change happens locally. That backyard farms and community gardens do more to challenge food scarcity and how people think about food than production farming in the sticks ever could. You are a conundrum, Living Roots. So much potential but so much wrong fundamentally. I am glad I tried you and I do not regret leaving.

sometimes when I wake up I remember that I’ve spent the past 10 months working 20–30 hours a week for free, and plan to continue doing so indefinitely because they’ve already said they won’t hire me.
because if I work an unpaid internship until I find a paying job, at least I won’t flunk an interview with my hypothetical future employer when they ask me the question “can you explain this gap in your resume?”

Damian: Baba. I’ve acquired an enemy at the academy. He’s been ripping my drawings, teasing me about my lineage, and smearing your honor. I understand murder can’t happen. How shall I proceed?
Bruce: [Has a flashback of Thomas driving to his bully’s house, spiked brass knuckles on his hands, petting his head and smiling dangerously, ‘I’ll be right back, chum!’]
Bruce: …I’ll talk to his parents.
Damian: Todd?
Jason: Finally, an excuse to tackle a 10 year old.

Something I want to say to new VA's. Do not do probono work, it might be tempting at first since you don't have experience or training to get or work for exposure, but that can tell people that you're a way for them to make a quick buck and have less rights than an intern.
IF YOU WANT EXPERIENCE- JUST DO COMIC DUBS FOR YOURSELF. If someone can profit off of your work and you see none of the DOSH, then you just got burned.
This is a VA's PSA from some girls who were in your shoes once.

Paid vs. Unpaid Digital Marketing Internships: The Ethics of Compensation
The debate between paid and unpaid digital marketing internships raises important ethical considerations. In this article, we will explore the ethical implications associated with both types of internships and their impact on aspiring marketers.
Tumblr media
Paid internships prioritize fair compensation for work performed. By providing financial remuneration, companies acknowledge the value of an intern's time and effort. Paying interns not only ensures a more equitable working relationship but also promotes diversity and inclusion in the industry. Unpaid internships, on the other hand, can perpetuate socioeconomic disparities by favoring individuals who can afford to work without compensation.
Furthermore, unpaid internships may contribute to the exploitation of young talent. In some cases, interns are assigned significant responsibilities and contribute to the success of a company without receiving adequate compensation. This raises questions about the ethical treatment of interns and the importance of recognizing their valuable contributions.
However, it is important to note that unpaid internships can still provide valuable learning experiences and opportunities for professional growth. Some organizations genuinely aim to provide mentorship and educational opportunities to interns, even if they cannot offer financial compensation. In these cases, it becomes essential to assess the overall value and fairness of the internship program.
To ensure ethical practices, companies should consider providing paid internships whenever possible. By offering fair compensation, organizations demonstrate their commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment. Additionally, they should establish clear guidelines and expectations for unpaid internships, ensuring that interns are treated fairly and their contributions are appropriately recognized.
In conclusion, the ethical considerations surrounding paid and unpaid digital marketing internships are significant. Paid internships promote fairness, diversity, and inclusion, while unpaid internships can potentially exploit young talent. Striving for equitable compensation and establishing transparent guidelines is crucial to ensure ethical treatment of interns and provide equal opportunities for aspiring marketers.
