If you're hesitating between unraveling or using a quick fix that will leave a mistake in your work, ask yourself these questions: Will it be visible... or will you be the only to know? Will a quick fix bother you forever...? Is the idea of unraveling so demotivating....? Do what feels best to you.
These wise words come from Lovely Lace Knits by Gabrielle Vezina. It is one thing if a garment does not fit, if it chokes you at the neck or binds your arms. Clothing that does not let your body move the way you want it to move is a curse. But if the mistake is a purely decorative one, as is the case with lace knits, you need to ponder Vezina's questions.
Cause if you end up despising the garment and won't wear it, or end up refusing to finish it in frustration, there is no point to all the effort you have already made. Better to figure out what you can live it, and get on with it. I daresay all makers need to decide what they can live with.

sometimes I do things besides library stuff, like making a comfy winter hat by unraveling an old and ugly sweater

Sometimes one must frog to rebuild.
Tumblr media
This WIP is the layering shrug by juju vail in a gotland fiber (hand dyed and hand spun by me) plied with a commercially spun, undyed silk thread yarn.
I hand dyed the gotland roving, spun, plied, and knit this gorgeous shrug about halfway through when I discovered I had two serious issues. One I hated the white silk doubled at the end of the arm bc it looked ugly to me. Too much white. Two, I had fucked up the wrong/right side of the knit at the point where the arm and back split from in the round to flat. I thought I could live with it if I just did the same mistake with the other arm when I got to it, but after it sitting in Shame On You Land for four years I have to concede that I Fucked Up and need to frog this sonofabitch and restart it. Bc I didn't give myself any lifelines. Bloody hell I'm so pissed at myself for not doing so. Lesson learned.
I loved how it was turning out too much to not start over. I remember how excited I was to finish it. Next time I'm going to absolutely give myself plenty of fucking lifelines.

A humane architecture does not only have the power to heal us. The very act of making it is itself a healing act for all of us. There are no shortcuts to beautiful form. If you stand in front of the faucet of your kitchen sink and look at the beautiful shape of the drop of water you can realize that it forms slowly as gravity works on the tiny bit of water. You can not make that shape mechanically. Nor can we make babies from adding together bits and pieces. The child forms slowly through a process of division and specialization of cells.
This is the essence of the process of unfolding: moving slowly step by step from a less to more differentiated space.

If I was working on a story that involved a longish hospital stay and lots of recovery in the Chicago retirement universe would you want it to be a loooooong and finished (I'm talking at least 20k words) one shot at posting or in 5k-ish chapters?

“the moon will sing a song for me, i loved you like the sun, bore the shadows that you made, with no light of my own, i shine only with the light you gave me” is OUT, “i once loved a tailor who took eager care of me, sewed together my loose ends with stitches neat and clean, but now my love is gone, and i am left unraveling” is IN

It's been a while since I picked an unraveling thrift store sweater project. I don't NEED yarn right now but I've been in a slump and my dad and bf are both begging for sweater vests. This is an XL men's and its 100% lambswool. Perfect for my dad's vest. I unraveled the sleeves and back panel so far. Ill tackle the rest later because unraveling can be a bit finicky and I have enough to get started. Plus the front panels are constructed a bit differently and harder to unravel right. Overall the construction of this sweater was quite good for unravelling. Simple continuous crochet seams and the sleeves were flat panels :-) the front ones are more complex but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Overall I'm pretty happy with this purchase. Yield so far is 350g and for a 10 dollar sweater I'm already well in the green. I've seen "CHEAP" 100g of lambswool go for 10-15. I know you need to account for my time but this was like a half hour! I'm getting pretty good and quick at unraveling. It made me kinda sad thinking about how expensive yarn can be. Fiber arts can feel so inaccessible financially sometimes. And thanks to fast fashion fewer and fewer sweaters are even constructed in a way that favours unravelling. I had to pick through so many sweaters that if I tried to unravel they'd just produce 4752377326 cut lengths of yarn instead of a continuous length.
