So, everybody (rightly so) talks about how brilliant the Unsaid Emily scene is in Julie and the Phantoms s1e8, but rewatching it has made me appreciate the moments before the song begins 🥺 Charlie smashes it as Luke even in the scene where he and Julie talk to Luke's father, and he lets them inside the house - the uncertainty, worry, and even fear when he realises that Julie's plan is to show his parents the song that he poured his heart into writing for so long is everything 💔 The thought of letting Julie into such a painful, personal part of his life - one that isn't the fun, happy-go-lucky, passionate Luke that he tries so hard to show to the outside world 🥺 Even the hesitation when his father invites Julie inside is so well done 🥺

also not julie showing up at the patterson’s house wearing her mom’s (presumably) 90s sweater, looking like she could’ve been the girl luke brought home back in 1995 (ngl it also kinda feels like she’s stepping back in time, dressed in that decade as she walks into this home that’s been stuck in time for 25 years, reliving the pain and being haunted by a ghost)
but jokes aside; julie wearing something precious from a loved one she can no longer talk to, on her way to hand over something precious to parents who can no longer talk to their loved one

Does anyone ever think about how little faith Luke’s parents must have had in his talent to not be able to find him all those months after he ran away? I mean we know they were looking because of the wanted posters, right? But like, Sunset Curve was making a name for themselves and that girl outside the Orpheum screams Reggie’s name, so other fans and people in the scene probably knew Luke’s too, so if his parents had ever even bothered to mention to the police that he was a musician they probably could have found him in a second. Or if they had tried going around to clubs and looking for him. But they didn’t. Because it never occurred to them that he could actually succeed. And for that to be true they must have never even heard him play. And I just … they never believed him for a second did they?

Question for the seasoned JATP fans... Does Unsaid Emily ever not make you cry, or is this going to keep making me cry forever?

Okay, but the thing about Julie and the Phantoms' "Unsaid Emily" is that Charlie's (Luke's) delivery may be interpreted in one of two ways. For example,
“And the words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave”
By looking at the line in this context, it is clear that Luke most regrets the terrible remarks he never intended to utter to his own mother. When you first hear the song, it sounds like he is stopping the lyric there, however that is not the case. Let’s say we look at it from the original perspective
"And the words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave, unsaid Emily."
The original lyrics reveal that Luke had things he wished to express to his mother, Emily. The fact that he fled before ever expressing his actual sentiments to her is a cause of genuine regret. He sort of tricks the audience, but not completely, to communicate the contrasting internal guilt he feels regarding his and his mother's quarrel. In this essay, I will-

i think what makes the entire unsaid emily performance even more heartbreaking is the fact that what we see play throughout the scene is what luke spends his time thinking about while hanging out at his parents’ house whenever he’s not with the guys or julie
ie the fight he had with his mom. cycling away as she ran after him, imagining her crying as he disappeared from view. picturing his dad comforting her as the tears continued to flow long after he was gone
thinking about the times he secretly went back to just get a glimpse of his parents — his mom waiting by the window, waiting for him to come home. imagining her doing that every night, even when he wasn’t there to watch it happen
and then the most heartbreaking one: him imagining how his parents must’ve gotten the news of his passing — how they were sitting down having a normal evening, just two parents of a teenage boy- dad reading the newspaper, mom knitting away another sweater for her child
to suddenly…seeing flashing police lights. suddenly having their world turned upside down > from being parents waiting on their rebellious son to come back to…..not being parents at all
how often does this kid torture himself with those images? with those scenes in his head as he watches his ageing parents going through the routine of living in this empty house that still had pictures of him everywhere??
