(grace coming out of the void tag)
He mixes Eddie a passable gin and tonic, adding a little squeeze of lime and a couple cucumber slices, while Jeff heads back out to the party.
“So, you and Helen…?” Steve asks. He thinks he sounds totally normal. Casual, even.
Eddie laughs, then stops abruptly. “Oh, shit. You’re serious? I’m gay, dude.”
“Oh.”
“I—huh. I really thought you knew.” Eddie looks thoughtful. He’s frowning a little. “Guess this puts a few things into context. Gonna be honest, I’m surprised you missed it. Hell, I’m surprised Robs didn’t spill the beans one way or another. Love her to death, but our girl’s not the greatest with keeping a lid on things.”
Steve feels a wash of heat in his face, and he’s not even really sure why. “I mean…it’s not like I didn’t guess you were, y’know, something. I thought—bisexual, maybe?”
It’s not totally true, but it’s not totally false, either. Steve hadn’t gotten so far as putting any specific words around what he thought Eddie might be or what Eddie might like, he’d just wondered in a formless sort of way.
“Nah,” says Eddie. “I mean, never say never, but. Historically, no.”
Steve lets the word historically roll around in his jaw, in his back teeth. He feels okay about it, he decides. He knows it’s not—Steve had a serious long-term girlfriend less than a month ago. He’s just always been the jealous type, even when he knows it’s not right or fair. He’s working on it.
Steve gets these stories in his head, is the problem. He gets to thinking like everything’s going to work out because it has to; like all the pain and bullshit will all make sense someday and be worth it.
It’s kid stuff, thinking that way. Sometimes things just hurt, and there’s no point to it. Sometimes pain’s just pain, and Steve Harrington is single at Christmas again, dying slow in a one-horse town.
“Hey, this G&T’s pretty good,” says Eddie. He grins all bright and boyish, looking nineteen again for a second. “Thanks, man.” He tips his glass towards Steve in a little salute, then saunters out of the kitchen.
———
Once, Steve had asked his mom: why didn’t you guys ever move out of Hawkins?
I don’t know, Steven, she’d said. Well, your dad’s job was here. We thought it was a nice safe town for you to grow up in. Don’t you like Hawkins?
Steve had shrugged and said sure and that had been the end of it. He does like Hawkins. He likes seeing familiar faces around, though it seems like there’s fewer of those every year. He likes how safe it feels, because he’s made it that way. He’s bled for Hawkins. Feels like that’s some kind of bond he can’t break. Sometimes at night when he can’t sleep, he grabs his old nail bat and goes to stand out in the woods, breathing hard, waiting for something anything anything to come at him.
Nothing ever has, not since 1986. It makes him feel a little crazy to remember that the time when he fought monsters and Russians was only about three years all told. It had felt like forever at the time. He really had thought that that was going to be his life, his real life. Everything else—school, work, girls—had felt like stuff he’d been doing in his downtime between the real stuff: hauling around ungrateful brats and beating the shit out of the forces of evil like something out of Saturday morning cartoons.
But it’s been six years of downtime, and lately he’s been wondering if that’s just how life goes. Vivid and wild at the start, but then the colors fade.
Last year, he’d gone to Christmas at Laura’s parents’ house. It had been a big house that looked almost exactly like the one he’d grown up in, with twinkling white lights outside; inside was a big tree by a crackling fireplace. There’d been an Irish Setter named Dooley who was pretty great. All the ornaments had matched. He’d had two glasses of white wine and went home by nine to have perfectly good sex with Laura and go to sleep at a reasonable hour.
He’d woken up at two in the morning for no reason. He couldn’t grab his bat and go into the woods because Laura had been right there sleeping next to him, so he’d just stared up at the ceiling not thinking about anything as his heart beat faster and faster for a very long time. He’d known then that he had to break up with Laura, even though they’d only been going out for a couple months, but he kept putting it off because it just hadn’t seemed worth it to end things. There hadn’t seemed to be any point.

Question for you, on the subject of SPOP ships: would you have been okay with Glitradora (essentially the poly trio) being a thing, had Nate Stevenson decided he wanted to go that direction? I'm just curious as someone who loved how the Catradora arc was done in the show.
(And for the record, I understand your indifference towards both Korrasami and CaitVi--the latter will need some more seasons in the oven to really flourish, while the former is severely hampered by the constant executive interference Nickelodeon pulled on LOK during its original run.)
if glitradora were made canon i would have eaten my own face (/pos) my god the CONCEPT,,, the DRAMA,,, the DYNAMICS,,,,, that would have been my roman empire actually
also agree w everything you say here indifference is a great word for it. caitvi i actually see the potential in them i don't dislike the pairing it just rlly isn't compelling to me. i actually felt a little,,, weird about it? it felt like it came out of nowhere to me?? which i know isn't true but something about it just strikes me as Rushed idk (vi is still one of my favorite characters though)
as for korrasami i lowkey feel bad hating on it bc i KNOW how much the network screwed over the writers about it, but like,,, man i don't even see the potential in this one ahgakjsdas. i will admit though a big part of this is just the general writing of tlok i felt wasn't great so the character dynamics seem sorta weak to me. i AM glad for what they did for representation in kids' cartoons though and i'm glad ppl are having a good time shipping them. the fanart is gorgeous also

I'm really shy about commenting.. but I wanted to tell you how much I look forward to every update of UtB, i drop everything to read when you update. And how nervous I was for Ef this chapter, waiting for Gary to see the destruction of his office. yet so relieved when Gary seemed to understand why Ef did it and so quickly switched to trying to calm *him*! Did he scent/ sense Ef's emotions or did everything just click at once? Anyway looking forward to the next v much ❤️‍🩹
Hi anon!
Honestly, Gary had no idea why Efnisien threw the tantrum and found it generally baffling. Especially after consecutive days of calm. That's why he said:
‘Why are you so angry with me?’ Dr Gary said.
As soon as he gets a clear answer from Efnisien: 'You keep leaving' - he finally understands and a lot of things come together very fast. But he needed Efnisien to communicate that to him first. But until that point, if anything, Efnisien has been verbally communicating that he wants to be left alone, even forgotten about.
Like, he understood Efnisien was distressed re: the mounting, but Gary didn't innately understand why the office was destroyed at all. And I think he's still putting it together, which is why he starts asking a lot of questions (about mounting, about why Efnisien is angry with him).
We're going to get a lot more information in the next chapter! They finally have a decent conversation, which is sorely, sorely needed.

i gotta get this out--i really wish tumblr would stop making fun of food.
it's just... tumblr's fun new game of pointing and laughing at weird food--mostly midwestern food--really rubs me the wrong way. and look, i get it--some of it may not be very appealing if you didn't grow up eating it. i didn't grow up eating it. i grew up in the american midwest, but in chicago--the food in chicago is a pretty far departure from the rest of the midwest. those staples i've seen floating around in polls and posts, like snickers salad and canned green bean casserole? they weren't things i ever ate, let alone heard of, as a kid. and honestly? all the mayo and cool whip based salads did gross me out when i first experienced them in college (moved to iowa), and the majority still really aren't my thing.
but here's the thing--all those mayo-based pasta salads? the jello and cool whip salads? the casseroles made exclusively with canned and frozen goods? the meatloaf? they aren't just midwesterner food. they are often poor and/or rural midwestern food.
because mayo and jello and canned goods are cheap and have a long shelf life, so they'll last if you can't make another trip 30+ minutes to the store this month. because you can easily fill a deep freeze with frozen potatoes and veggies and meat and not have to worry about the money you're wasting when they spoil. because adding breadcrumbs and seasoning and ketchup to that last scrap of ground beef is going to help stretch it into a proper meal for your family so now you don't have to throw it away and it will still taste good.
sure, not every person today who is making hot dish or stained glass salad is dirt poor and living in "the middle of nowhere." not every meatloaf ever made was cooked up out of desperation. some people eat tuna tetrazzini casserole because it is quick, easy, and they just like it. but that is still their food. it is all someone's food. i thought we learned not to make fun of people's food when we realized who we hurt when making fun of southern food, or appalachian food, or the plethora of other cuisines that we have seen derided as "gross" and "unhealthy" time and again. people get hurt when you mock their food.
part of being human is being different from each other, and i think its good to acknowledge. i don't think there is anything wrong with acknowledging that something isn't to your taste, that you find it strange or weird or curious. i don't think there's anything wrong with having fun with it either! i think its really great to have fun discovering and trying weird new shit, even if you still don't like it afterwords and just confirm that its too weird for you! but i do think there is a line in the sand that takes the fun somewhere mean and tumblr's exploration of midwestern and other wierd food seems to be stepping over it. people intentionally misrepresenting dishes, sneering at the ingredients, seeking out recipes but making them poorly and talking about how nasty the results are, and just... mocking food. its just really been leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Still obsessed with the line in knack ch4 "As if Tommy is one to talk. At least Tubbo owns more than one shirt."
Like. I know realistically that they've known each other for about 2 days (meeting on the sidewalk up through the hotel room, gas station bathroom up through techno's house, now going into the third day), but the implications here are that
in the old world tommy only had the one shirt
and
every time tommy's appeared in this series he's been wearing the iconic red and white top

Excellent thing: gaining access to the Audible audio adaptation of A Christmas Carol because they’ve given me yet another free trial and that’s included with membership.
Even better thing: THAT CAST. I mean. Derek Jacobi as Dickens, Kenneth Cranham as Scrooge, my beloved Roger Allam as Jacob Marley, MIRIAM FRICKING MARGOLYES as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Brendan Coyle and Tim McInnerny and Jamie Glover and Jenna Coleman and Joshua James and Emily Bruni and and and and.
Entirely predictable thing that is making me facepalm at myself: look. In my defense, I listened to it using my headphones. And then Roger as Jacob had these... angry/frustrated/caring/distressed growls. So really it isn’t my fault IN THE LEAST that I found that inappropriately sexy and now have even more Jacob Marley feelings than usual. ;-)
(Which really was already a lot. Jacob’s past hoping for himself and he gets that second chance for Scrooge (and we never know what he had to do to get it but it can’t have been easy) and it’s so incredibly selfless especially coming from someone who was not selfless at all in life and I just have to hope that knowing that he’s succeeded in making something better despite everything gives him comfort and aaaaaah.)
Also entirely predictable: Jamie Glover is one of the best voice actors I know of anyway (not nearly enough people know his work) and then he’s Bob Cratchit and you get to That Bit and I may just have sobbed through the whole thing. I always cry at that bit, to be fair, but not like that. Aaaaah.
Assuming I still have access to the thing after I cancel my membership (because I do prefer not to give Amazon money when I can help it), I’ll listen to it again at Christmas. <3 Extremely well-done, very good adaptation all round. The script is very good and is very interesting in its choice of which bits to adapt (always fascinating what people go for); the acting is absolutely the best I’ve seen or heard in any adaptation of the story. In particular I think Kenneth Cranham is even better than either Patrick Stewart or Michael Caine as Scrooge and I do not say that lightly as they were both amazing.

Finished 'Star Wars Fallen Order'. Great game, had fun. Found all the things.
But ... wow ...
Cal Kestis did not live up to the hype people made.
He's your basic white male protagonist.
I like him, but I was expecting more after hearing for years about how amazing he is, how we should have Cal instead of "insert character here"
IDK ... I expected more.

the cardinal and milady actually have such a fascinating relationship but i can't be fucked putting my thoughts into words. and as ever the writing of the show is a major source of frustration bc it is not very good and wants you to assume a level of complexity in the characters that is never actually earned.
