NEW FIC : Precious Things

Smoothing out Jin Lings feathers, Wei Wuxian is hit with how old he is - but how very young he still is too. Some of his feathers are still baby soft, and others are spiky with the hormonal brittleness of puberty. His colouring hasn't settled yet - some of his baby feathers are different colours to the ones above them. Jin Ling settles comfortably against his hands, and Wei Wuxian starts to preen his wings properly, internally whooping for joy.

Filling a prompt for the 2023 Untamed Kinkmeme collection, and I'm super pleased to have it in in this year! When I claimed it months ago, I just thought it would be cute, but writing it was so fun I wouldn't be surprised if I add a few more chapters in the future.

If you like wing fic and family feels, and a healthy dose of worldbuilding, then this is the end of year fic for you!!

I think my favorites change from day to day and year to year, but RIGHT NOW I'm fond of these ones:

At the End of the Road (the Untamed, Wangxian) I like this one because I feel it was a successful fulfillment of my artistic ambition, which was to write a sexy and unhinged fill for the prompt "practice edging". It basically wrote itself, I didn't overthink it, it's hot and funny and even has emotions! Also it has by far the most kudos, so it's my favorite in the way that your favorite child is the one who brings home lots of awards from school.

2. A Heady Cocktail (the Untamed, Lan Wangji/Jiang Cheng) is also Just Smut, but I am fond of it because it's my manifestation of the one specific flavor of this ship that I like. Two prickly characters who only know how to soften up in the presence of their mutual beloved, alone together and figuring it out. I had a good time playing with how Wei Wuxian was involved in their dynamic even while not physically present. Also I just wanted to describe modern Jiang Cheng looking great and making negronis, for Reasons.

3. My Apple Tree, My Brightness (The Untamed, Wangxian) This fic is hella good and makes everyone cry, even me! It's a science fiction AU where post-siege LWJ, in seclusion, runs simulations to try to figure out how he could have saved Wei Wuxian. Spoiler: he couldn't, but it turns out to be worthwhile, anyway. The ending is especially well written, IMO, and the sci fi worldbuilding is pleasingly deft. I put this third on the list but it's possibly actually my favorite.

4. Veritas (the Untamed, Wangxian) A Fake Dating fic where a pining Lan Wangji agrees to be Wei Wuxian's "terrible" fake date to the Qin Su/Jin Guangyao wedding. Some parts of it feel rushed or underdone to me, but I'm proud of the humor and the climactic set piece, and The People do seem to really like it! I don't naturally think of myself as a humorous writer, but perhaps I am...good at it?? Oh, and, fun fact, I did more research for this fic than any other (not counting listening to a lot of vintage goth music for the Quiet Room).

5. Anchor Point (Sherlock, Johnlock) I'm only giving one slot to Sherlock fic in this list, and it has to go to this weird cool thing I made. It was for a kinkmeme prompt, a Sherlock/Truman Show fusion where Sherlock is Truman and "John" is an actor hired to play his John Watson. Mycroft is the mastermind. Writing this fic was a really educational exercise in making it seem like something Really Big was going on while not being able actually explain the details (a trick I learned from Moftiss, LOLLLLL) It was very tricky and fun and I'm still quite proud of it.

I wish I could find an author interested in writing a crossover fic between The Untamed and Rurouni Kenshin. I KNOW one is Japanese and one is Chinese but I think it'd work. I'd like to think that Kenshin would be a very good role model for Wei Wuxian and be a good older brother figure. What if like, KENSHIN found Wei Wuxian in Yiling instead of Jiang Cheng's dad?? Kenshin barely reformed raising this little hellion child and them traveling all over China and to Japan when needed. I think it'd be a really good story. I think I would actually pay someone to write it if they could do it justice.

Inspired by the “JC wife discourse”, there’s a prompt on the Untamed Kinkmeme where Jiang Cheng gets a wife who is basically the OPPOSITE of what he’s put on his list of required traits - clumsy, loud, average-looking, powerful cultivator - and in this story he’s absolutely disgustingly in love with her. The prompt also specifies that she is really good to Jin Ling. So I kinda want to write that now.

please do!!!! I mean minus clumsy and average looking, "opposite of his list (except being nice to JL)" is basically Wen Qing, so obviously I'm always compelled that dynamic

Hi new Tumblr followers.

Some of you may have found me via the random poll that went viral. This is largely a fandom-related blog with occasional posts about life, the universe, and everything. Sometimes social or political issues.

If you didn’t notice from my Tumblr bio thingie, I’m 39yo enbie queer, have been writing fanfiction since the late 90s, was a professor until December when I quit due to department toxicity and burnout, and I advocate on queer rights/issues/history, disability, anti-racism, anti-capitalist, etc. issues. I’ve previously been involved in protests, particularly when I was more able-bodied. I am a published poet, recently was involved in developing an academic textbook involving the Holocaust, and am generally active in literary communities beyond fandom. I warn you, I also like to randomly quote Hamlet at inappropriate moments.

Fandom-wise, I’ve written mostly for Yu Yu Hakusho, Slayers, Pandora Hearts, Miraculous Ladybug, Mo Dao Zu Shi/The Untamed and a smattering of other fandoms. I mostly write in the MDZS/Untamed fandom now. I used to participate in Kinkmemes on LiveJournal, including helping to run a small one for the Slayers fandom. In the 2000s I ran a small Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction contest. I helped judge several other contests, as well. I used to RP a lot, as well. I often beta read for friends, though I don’t do it on any large scale as I don’t want to.

I don’t tend to share my IRL info based on a prior fandom’s wannabe-BNF creeper’s henchpeople threatening to dox me. Not that it matters since I’m currently unemployed by choice and necessity.

I like Tumblr as a throwback to the relative intimacy of blogging in Internet 1.0, where even in anonymity there’s more connection than through modern social media, which seems largely comprised of screaming into the void with the dubious pleasure of going viral as the only goal and “reward.” In other words, I’m internet old and crotchety.

I previously went “viral” when I posted about murmurings that Fanfiction.Net might go away, and wound up deleting that post because the notifs were driving me crazy. I also had a random post about a class get featured on a FB group, and was accused of being racist toward white people for simply using the word “colonialism.” As in “English was spread to many places via colonialism and thus has many dialects, none of them more valid than any other.”

The only saving grace to this poll going viral is the fact that it’ll be over in a few more days. I’m not really sure what about this poll tickled so many people into sharing, but from many of the tags it seems to be the fact that it brought up childhood memories and nostalgia for a lot of people. Likely the fact that it was done without the capitalist push to buy something added to the appeal.

Angst with a happy ending. I actually drew a whole blueprint of the Lan family’s siheyuan estate for my own notes lol.

2) No Refunds, Satisfaction Guaranteed | 2,614 kudos | rated E | The Untamed (陈情令)/MDZS Wei Ying is mistaken for the sexbot that he was supposed to deliver to Lan Zhan. The premise is inspired by the Korean manhwa 너와 30일.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Yes, I try to! The trick is not to let them build up until the inbox looks too daunting lol.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I like happy endings, even if I sometimes put the characters through a lot of shit before they get there. I’ve only written two sad ending fics (both for Shadowhunters) - The Lighthouse on Lightwood Island and The Kingdom by the Sounding Sea.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Like I said, I like happy endings. I think the fics with an ending I was most satisfied with are All Realms of Where and When Beyond (Shadowhunters), lovers be lost (but love shall not) (The Untamed/MDZS), we’ll be carrying each other (The Untamed/MDZS) for some Yunmeng-Jiang sibling feels, our love is a harsh chord (Shadowhunters) and there is a light and it never goes out (Shadowhunters) mainly because I put them through so much shit that they deserved their happy endings.

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I don’t really do cross-overs, but I’ve done fics set in a borrowed ‘verse - Supernatural-verse Monsters and Star Trek-verse series inevitable orbits.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yes, but my favourite kink is two idiots catching feelings and falling in love :P Probably the only tropes/kinks I will never ever write are non-con, incest, and stuff that belongs in the toilet.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes. Also weird people who will leave comments telling me that they’re going to write a fic exactly like mine (like ??? WHY. Go write your own shit).

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have! I’ve had some fics from all my fandoms translated mainly into Russian and Spanish, and a few in Italian as well. And a couple of podfics (not translation but transformative I guess), and fanart for my fic from some really talented artists, which I always appreciate a lot.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not really? I’m bad at writing with other people.

What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Malec. The first ship I wrote properly for, and I keep coming back to them ❤️

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I am a stubborn asshole and I intend to finish all my WIPs. Haven’t broken my record yet! *touch wood*

What are your writing strengths?

World-building. And a lot of research.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Too much plot getting in the way of my porn. Why is there so much plot and all these action/adventure fighting scenes, this was supposed to be simple?? *cries*

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I had such a hard time when I first started writing for The Untamed and Word of Honour because I hear all the dialogue in my head in Chinese *facepalm* Sometimes I get stuck and I end up having to just write it down in Chinese and translate it later, and sometimes I know the perfect phrase/idiom for something I want to say but it’s in Chinese? Luckily I enjoy translating too, it’s always a good kind of challenge trying to approximate the nuance in a way that isn’t too clumsy in English. 

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Ranma Nibun-no-ichi. This was back when you had to post fic on geocities.  

What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

I am proud of most of my fic. I like to challenge myself with new tropes or techniques, and I enjoy writing and researching for them. If I had to choose, I’d pick three. 

All Realms of Where and When Beyond because it was my life for six months and I will always love the world and lore that I built for it.

Lost & Found // 有缘千里来相会 (The Untamed/MDZS) because it was an exploration of the complicated concepts of belonging and family in the framework of my culture and my identity as Chinese diaspora.

And our love is a harsh chord (Shadowhunters) because it was the most structurally complex thing I’ve written. It was basically like a psychological experiment? I used a non-linear narrative to mimic the way that memories come back to us in a non-linear fashion, one thing triggered by another, and the order of the scenes were chosen in a way that sort of mimicked the highs and lows of drug abuse/addiction in the way that a happy scene gets tainted with the dread of the drop that you know is coming. So that was a very fun thing to write and possibly somewhat ambitious, but I think I did pretty well with it!

F: Share a snippet from one of your favourite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

this one took a lot of thought, but i settled on this snippet from bacchanalia (it was always going to be a distortion fic, to be honest)

“Who are you?” Jon asks, listening to his own voice echoing the question back at him. Her name is not Helen, because she isn’t real, she tells him. None of this is real. “I already knew that,” he tells her, and she laughs. That echoes too.

i think i like it less for the dialogue itself, both in this section and their later section of conversation, and more for the way i conveyed it. it's not subtle, perhaps, but i enjoyed having helen's dialogue conveyed as indirect dialogue, and how that showed what this place had done to her, how unreal she felt - or even was

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?

tropey vampire fic. my one weakness. i've started writing at least one vampire fic for all of my major fandoms, even if they don't always get finished. (rip the four chapters of the homestuck vampire AU i was writing before i lost half a chapter to technical issues and so lost interest)

also, "character who was weak compared to other characters is secretly badass/powerful" is the reason i've read as many teen wolf and witcher fics as i have. i've barely watched teen wolf, and i'm not especially invested in the witcher in a fannish way. but those fics are good food for me if i can ignore/filter out the character bashing.

L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

like, once, if that. when i wrote fic on paper (which, jesus, that's three years ago now), the process of writing it up would be a revision process for me. for a while, i had a similar process where i'd have a blank document open and "write it up" from the finished document

now... well, it's harder to say right now, because a lot of my recent fics have either been A) me polishing up something i started months/years ago that's good enough to post, and i just want to clear it out of my brain without thinking about it too hard, or B) fics that have taken me a lot of very granular work where i've done a lot of rewriting during the initial drafting process

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you'd care to share?

i have a lot for The Untamed, mostly because i spent a week or so going through all of the kinkmeme prompts from 2020 to the present and saving any that i was remotely interested in writing. so now i have over 100 claims on AO3

but beyond those, i have a few ideas all of my own, and still some WIPs for TMA and Arcane that who knows if i'll ever manage to finish. i'm realising now that i haven't actually shared any premises but uh. too many ideas!

(hey, do you remember the homestuck faery dance/masquerade fics i think i mentioned to you back in like. 2016/2017? that's still a premise on the back burner that i want to finish somewhen. i have it all planned out except even years later, i haven't got an ending)

Z: Major character death—do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can't tolerate?

i've written it four times, according to AO3, and i'm sure i've read it, but i can't think of any examples

the ones i've written are two where the death is a canon death, and two where it's basically... everyone dies except the characters i'm focusing on. (actually, i might have a third one like the latter, but it's not tagged MCD)

i don't tend to go to fics for fix-its, so major character death is fine for me if it works for the story + the characters, and if it isn't in service of characters/relationships that i don't care about

Because if you did it would be really cool to know about it and maybe see a post on that! I am kind of really curious regarding such things😂

Besides, it would surely be an interesting list people could take as prompts and then the readers would also be able to enjoy exactly what they wanted to read!😄

This is a really interesting question (and a great one from someone who takes prompts!) It sent me off to actually read @mdzs-kinkmeme's prompt FAQs, which I hadn't delved into before.

If you're looking to do a fill (meaning writing a story based on a prompt) you can go peruse reader ideas here and also at Dreamwidth's MO DAO ZU SHI KINK MEME. This fandom is very lucky to have two kinkmemes - and I should specify here that 'kinkmeme' just means a place to exchange all kinds of prompts, and is not specific to being kinky.

Off the top of my head, I feel like I've seen these answered the fewest:

wei wuxian being beautiful/desired by others with protective or jealous lan wangji and juniors

wwx or lwj being rogue cultivators (by choice or from childhood)

dark/hurtful lwj (using resentful energy/dark magic or hurting wwx by accident or on purpose)

A-Yuan being the biological child of either wwx or lwj

'characters watching their show' has come up multiple times

golden core transfer doesn't happen or happens to someone else

Song Lan can hear Xingchen’s rapid breathing from his place on the floor. He’s laying a few feet away from them and their makeshift bed. Xue Yang must be touching Xingchen, the way he always does as soon as they lay down to sleep. In the darkness, Song Lan can just barely make out the glitter of Xue Yang’s eyes over Xingchen’s shoulder, the stroke of his hands under Xingchen’s inner robes. Sometimes, when he can’t sleep, he can see them rock together, has woken to Xingchen’s muffled groan of release more than once.

It’s been days since Song Lan stumbled upon them. It was luck that he saw Xingchen before Xue Yang saw him, luck that Xingchen was there when Song Lan saw Xue Yang, that he kept him from running Xue Yang through. Song Lan doesn’t know if even Xingchen could forgive him for destroying their lives a second time.

At least Xue Yang had been as shocked as Song Lan to discover that Xiao Xingchen had known his identity, had known almost the whole time.

Xingchen didn’t ask him to stay, but he didn’t make him leave, so Song Lan stayed. He had nowhere else to go, not anymore. They let him sleep on the floor, let him eat with them, as long as he did his share of the cleaning and cooking. And now--

“Zichen.” Xue Yang’s voice, in the here and now, is heavy and venomous. Even just the sound of it is corrosive in Song Lan’s head. “Why don’t you come over here?”

Song Lan can’t breathe.

“Xingchen told me, about what you two used to do together,” Xue Yang says. “How good you made him feel.” Song Lan watches a hand trail up Xingchen’s chest, exposing his skin to the faint moonlight. Heat, the same old fierce desire, coils in the pit of his stomach, but it feels uglier now.

“A-Yang,” Xingchen says, which—it isn’t a no, isn’t stop.

It used to be him, with Xingchen this way, the two of them wrapped around each other under the stars. They didn’t need a home, didn’t need to feel settled, because home was with each other. Xingchen’s smile, his warmth, his unshakable faith in them, in their work, his belief that they could make the world better—that was home. He is, and always has been, the most beautiful person Song Lan knows.

Then Xue Yang happened. Hate is too soft a word for what Song Lan feels when he looks at him, at that cruel, knowing smile.
