Dress to skirt
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My friend @pinkgothduplica had this dress that she liked on principle but didn't like the bodice part of. Why does the bodice suddenly have lace that gives completely different vibes to the rest of the dress? What's up with those voluminous shoulder straps? (Spoiler: One of them has since become a casual bonnet. Maybe my friend can take some pictures because I forgot to do that.)
A dress obviously already comes with a skirt part so the work was in separating the bodice part from that. The seam ripper was very busy! I carefully removed the black skirt and white underskirt from the bodice. I sewed those together again, so I could handle them as one layer. For some reason the top skirt was wider then the underskirt, so I gathered that down a bit at the same time. My kitty was watching me very attentively and also kept trying to sit on the skirt. Very cute but also inconvenient!
For the waistband I used the former waistties. I've ironed them open (after seam ripping them open) and cut out a narrow waistband. I pressed everything and sewed a tunnel for my elastic to go on in. I've had to improvise a bit here from my usual method because the dress had a zipper and I wanted to leave that in for the skirt for extra easy dressing. The waistband is also elasticated! I added a big fabric covered button in the end and made a loop out of the elastic.
The skirt turned out so cute and my friend is sure she'll wear it way more now in it's new form. She's not really active on tumblr anymore I think, but you can find here on IG as mag.sugar to see her great outfits!

A different kind of material haul!!
Tumblr media
This year at Atelier Dosun, one of my goals is to create more responsible, minimal waste pieces.
As a designer, this feels like a small beginning on a journey to create beautiful things while still making a difference, in my own way. Here’s a haul of some items I’m really excited to work with!
Pictured in the first image are a bunch of thrifted hankies from Japan. Sourced these from an Instagram thrift store, and super excited to upcycle them in various ways! Clothing, bags, accessories..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second comes these misc. accessories/parts of accessories from my childhood that I reclaimed. Hoping to use these to make repurposed jewellery! (If not by themselves, mixing them up with my usual jewellery for a start)
Tumblr media
Then comes these old (unused) towels from home. I absolutely loved the colors and the cute floral print/ checks. Visualising a bag from these. (Maybe I’ll think of more ideas later on)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly (for now), are these thrifted denims and a thrifted skirt (damaged) and thrifted striped dress (lots of stains). I’m on a mission to make unwearable, “toss-it-in-the-trash” clothing items wearable. Let’s give them a new life!!
That’s all (for now!)
P.s- NHK World’s “zero waste lifestyle” series on YouTube has been a huge inspiration lately :) they make me very excited to begin!
Please give me your blessings in making this work :) 💗🧸⭐️🌺💜

Nabbed two of these super Tikuanyin Tea caddies at the Newark Runway antiques and vintage fair yesterday with super peacock motifs and scrolly feather design. I absolutely love peacocks and when you see them in England, they seem so magical and exotic. When I saw the tin, I instantly knew what I was going to make with it. And then in the bottom of the same box I rummaged out another! Woot woot! Every inch of this super design is going to be upcycled into something new giving it renewed purpose and meaning, rather than living in a dusty cardboard box for the rest of eternity. I mean a peacock doesn’t hide its feathers right? . . . #tikuanyin #tikuanyintea #vintagetin #vintagetea #vintageteacaddy #peacock #peacockearrings #upcycledfashion #sustainablefashion #sustainablejewelry #reusereducerecycle #makingoldnew #cratedigging #vintagetinearrings #handmadejewellery #newarkrunwaymonday (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CczqnjSufsO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Beyond Labels: Rethinking Leather in a Sustainable Future🐮🐏
Leather. Two syllables that spark fierce debate in the fashion world. A symbol of luxury, durability, and timeless style for some, a sustainability nightmare for others. But what if there was a way to bridge the gap? Let's dive into the complex politics of animal products and explore a more balanced perspective.
Tumblr media
The Ethical Dilemma:
The environmental impact of animal agriculture is undeniable. From deforestation for grazing land to water usage, the statistics can be sobering. Additionally, concerns about animal welfare in factory farms raise questions about the ethics of using animal products. However, there's another side to the story.
The Case for Responsible Husbandry:
Many farms practicing responsible animal husbandry prioritize animal welfare. They provide ample space, humane treatment, and sustainable land management practices. These ethical farms utilize the entire animal, ensuring minimal waste. The hides used for leather are a byproduct of the food industry, not an additional reason for raising animals.
Quality Over Quantity:
Think of your favorite leather jacket or bag. Chances are, it's well-made and meant to last for years, even decades. Leather's durability reduces overall consumption and the need for frequent replacements. This stands in stark contrast to fast fashion's emphasis on cheap, disposable clothing.
Tumblr media
Beyond Black and White:
When it comes to fur, faux fur presents a clear ethical and environmental advantage. Its versatility, style, and affordability make it a great alternative. However, leather presents a more nuanced situation. Here's where mindful consumerism and transparency are key.
The Future of Fashion:
The future lies in embracing sustainable practices across the board. Supporting brands committed to responsible animal husbandry and utilizing eco-friendly tanning processes is crucial. Additionally, innovations in recycled and upcycled materials offer exciting possibilities.
Artisanal Expertise and Job Creation:
Beyond the environmental benefits, sustainable fashion supports local economies. Artisanal leatherwork and fabric making traditions thrive on responsible practices. This creates jobs and empowers communities, particularly in developing nations.
Tumblr media
The Choice is Yours:
There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The goal is to encourage critical thinking. Do you prioritize affordability and readily available alternatives like faux fur? Or are you willing to invest in high-quality, ethically sourced leather pieces that will last a lifetime?
The Question Remains:
Have we reached a point where we can appreciate the craftsmanship and longevity of ethically sourced leather goods while also advocating for sustainable and ethical practices in the fashion industry as a whole?
Let's move beyond rigid labels and embrace a conversation filled with nuance and solutions. Share your thoughts below! How can we create a fashion future that's both stylish and responsible?

I love that everything in this outfit has a story! ♡
The thrifting gods blessed me for my birthday and I found five great tops at my local second hand shop. Plussize clothing is very rare here but I still manage to find elusive gems. This sage green top is one of my finds.
The necklace comes from a local animal charity, they auction of handmade jewelry and other handmade accessories to support animal help.
The green bag with the cathedral window patchwork comes from a patchwork swap event. It's one of my favourite bags ever since I received it years ago! The fabric strap was slowly being rubbed away, so by now I have covered almost everything in crochet. (More crochet strap is at the back at the moment and not visible in this picture. As the fabric is further fraying from use I will have to make another crochet repair soon and will probably now just cover the whole strap).
@bright-eyes-hope gave me the skirt. She didn't really wear it anyway. It used to have a wide pink waistband (like about 25cm wide) and I removed it to attach it to another skirt of hers (where she didn't like the waistband). I loved the skirt and could keep it as a thank you for the transplantation! I've added a new waistband and a new voluminous underskirt (because the fabric is otherwise see-through and the previous underskirt was a tight tube).
