Uptown Girl - Bradley Bradshaw x Reader
Tumblr media
pairing: Bradley Bradshaw x reader
warnings: swearing, Jake teasing Bradley about being old.
word count: 2k
Tumblr media
“Man, I can’t just go talk to her.”
Bradley put his head in his hands as he sat at the back of the Hard Deck with his friends. Running his long fingers through his short, golden-brown curls, he sighed before looking up, his hazel eyes full of anxiety and frustration. He’d been pining after a girl who’d become a regular at the local bar for a while - the first day he’d seen her, he was smitten.
She’d come in with her long hair pulled back into a sleek, high ponytail, a warm, friendly smile on her features as she spoke with a few others in the bar. Bradley had wondered who she was, and where she’d come from, a question none of his squadron seemed to know the answer to. That was, until their team lead, and Bradley’s surrogate father of sorts, piped up with an explanation, having heard Bradley audibly swooning over how great she was to everyone in earshot.
“That’s Admiral Simpson’s daughter. I wouldn’t try your luck there, if I were you, Bradley,” Maverick had warned, smirking as he took a sip from his beer glass as he looked over between Bradley and his mystery girl.
Bradley had gone quiet upon learning this information, unable to even fire back at his friend Jake’s retorts and quips about how Bradley was punching above his weight on this one, even as a skilled aviator. In a way, Jake was right, no amount of skill or experience in the air, no number of awards for his service, or medals of honor could put him in the same league as the Admiral’s daughter. Her father had recently become the commander of the entire Pacific fleet, and Bradley was just a lieutenant, serving as an aviator for the past 19 years, his entire naval career.
At nearly 40, Bradley was beginning to consider retirement, weighing his options between becoming a flight instructor for Top Gun, the very flight academy program that he’d graduated from himself, or, ending his naval career to enter civilian life happily. With the exception of Maverick, the rest of his team were considerably younger than he was, the next oldest being Jake, at barely 35. Admiral Simpson’s daughter was easily a decade younger than him, if not more, and probably accustomed to much more in life than anything Bradley could offer her. Naval rank aside, she was likely much more used to living the life of luxury, where as Bradley had never really experienced it, outside of the odd frivolous purchase here or there, like his 1972 Ford Bronco, custom painted bright blue to restore it to its former glory when he purchased it.
Despite all these reasons why Bradley should just forget this juvenile feeling crush he’d developed on her, he couldn’t shake it. Every time he caught a glimpse of her stunning smile, or heard her infectious laugh, the sweetest sound his ears had ever come across, he couldn’t help but fall right back into it again, like a trap that was set perfectly for him. Bradley was head over heels, but worst of all,
“You’re fucked, man. You can’t win here.”
Bradley sighed again as he shook his head, bringing himself back to the present moment. He looked up at Jake, who, upon seeing the confused look on Bradley’s face, laughed and repeated himself.
“I said, you’re fucked, man. There’s no winning here, you either go in there, you say hi to this girl and you ask her out, her dad finds out and you get your ass shipped out to another base faster than you can salute, or you ask her out and she turns your old ass down, either way, you’re going to end up unhappy and not with her,” Jake shrugged as he sipped his beer, leaning on his pool cue.
Bob, the more shy, reserved of Bradley’s team, shook his head. He pushed his glasses up on the end of his nose, adjusting them as he set his plastic cup down on the bar counter, shrugging his shoulders as he interjected, a rare occurrence for Bob, most of the time.
“I mean…Bradley could probably win her over,” He said quietly, nodding his head, “It wouldn’t be hard, I mean, he has an impressive career record, he’s a nice guy, he’s not bad to look at,” Bob shrugged, “I think he could pull it off. It’s her dad I’d be worried about. But, maybe he wouldn’t care so much? It’s not like Bradley’s gonna – what’s that term again? Hump and go? Surf and turf?”
“You mean hump and dump?” Jake snickered, shaking his head, “I think Brad here’s a bit old to pull off the hump and dump nowadays anyways. Maybe 20 years ago.”
“Easy, I only just turned 39 in June, thanks.”
“39 is practically old enough to be a grandfather, Bradley,”
“Oh come on, it is not,” Bradley frowned as he looked at his friends. Bob fiddled with his glasses nervously, avoiding eye contact, Jake smirked as he held back a laugh, and Reuben and Mickey pretended they didn’t hear the conversation, focusing instead on their game of darts taking place a couple of feet away, “Is it?”
“How many years older than you is Mav, man?”
“I dunno,” Bradley shrugged his shoulders, “22, maybe? 23?”
“Right, so when he was 39, you were…?”
“Uh,” Bradley looks up at the ceiling as he counts in his head, trying to work out the math, “16?”
“Right…you see where I’m going with this?”
“Fuck, you’re right, I could be someone’s grandfather. Jesus Christ,” Bradley frowned, shaking his head as he sipped his beer again.
“Relax, you’d have to had a kid at like, 23 or earlier, who also had a kid young for it to work, but it’s not impossible, is all,” Jake nodded matter of factly as he sipped his drink. Jake grinned as he spotted the girl in question walking by their seats, his elbow sharply poking Bradley in the ribcage as he nodded his head slightly in her direction.
“Now’s your chance, loverboy. Take it now if you’re gonna shoot your shot,” Jake whispered with a smirk on his lips.
Bradley nodded his head once and took a deep breath as he set his beer bottle down on the table. With a nervous smile, he put his aviators down over his eyes to hide their anxious gaze before heading over to the piano. If there was one thing Bradley could do to win her over, it’d be serenading the bar with a fun, classic upbeat tune. Normally, he’d go for his favourite, Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lewis, but desperate times called for desperate measures. Bradley put a hand on Jake’s shoulder, his grip firm as he leaned in to whisper to him.
“How confidently can you sing Uptown Girl?”
“You mean like, “uptown girl, she’s been living in her uptown world, I bet she’s never had a backstreet guy…?” Jake laughed as he cocked his eyebrow, singing the chorus of the song in his slightly off key baritone, “Oh, you’re not seriously doing this, are you?” He drawled, shaking his head before shooting Bob, Reuben and Mickey a look of disbelief.
“I love that song!” Bob said enthusiastically as he stood to his feet, “We’ve got your back, buddy, let’s go win her heart!”
Jake rolled his eyes and laughed before following Bradley and his friends to the piano. Bradley took his seat on the piano bench, lowering his sunglasses to make eye contact with his dream girl’s gaze, a confident smirk on his face as he winked at her before putting his glasses back on. He wasn’t sure if it was the beer coursing through his veins or the sheer smitten head over heels side of him taking over, but his new found confidence had Bradley playing the opening bars of the 80s hit on the piano, his friends offering nothing but encouragement for his somewhat ridiculous idea. It wasn’t the smoothest way to get a girl’s attention, but, it was different, and would almost certainly stand out in her mind, he reasoned with himself.
“Uptown girl, she’s been living in her uptown world. I bet she’s never had a backstreet guy, I bet her momma’s never told her why,”
Bradley sang out, his deep, gravelly voice ringing out as he carried each note perfectly in tune as he played the song’s melody on the piano.
“And now she’s looking for a downtown man, that’s what I am,”
Bradley’s eyes met with hers as he sang, unable to stop himself from smiling wider than he probably should have as he belted the song out, making it clear that out of the crowd of people around them singing along, his full intent was just to get her attention on him.
“And when she knows what she wants from her time, and when she wakes up and makes up her mind,”
Bob, Jake, Reuben and Mickey harmonized alongside Bradley, making for a perfectly imperfect set of backing vocals. While none of the four of Bradley’s backup singers were particularly great singers, their harmonies were enough support for Bradley to carry his way through the song without looking like he’d just lost his mind and started breaking out into song.
“She’ll see I’m not so tough, just because, I’m in love with an uptown girl, you know I’ve seen her in her uptown world. She’s getting tired of her high class toys, and all her presents from her uptown boys, she’s got a choice,”
As Bradley continued to sing it out, with his friends as moral and vocal support, he noticed that his mystery girl was making her way closer to the piano, seemingly leaving behind whoever she had arrived with as she inched her way towards the man who was apparently serenading her in the middle of a crowded bar near a naval base. She flashed him a smile, her cheeks a soft blush as she raised an eyebrow at him. Bradley couldn’t tell if the blush in her features was from embarrassment or flattery, but he hoped it was the latter of the two.
“And when she’s walking, she’s looking so fine, and when she’s talking, she’ll say that she’s mine,”
Bob and Jake began dramatically singing with one another, using Jake’s empty beer bottle as a makeshift microphone, while Mickey excitedly drummed along with his hands on the wooden top of the piano. Reuben began dancing slightly as he sang along to the words, all four men now completely immersing themselves in their performance with Bradley, and all four likely contemplating how they’d get Bradley to repay them for their public humiliation in the name of getting him a potential date.
Bradley grinned as she approached the piano, her hands resting on the wooden top as he played the last few notes of the song, his eyes completely fixated on hers. To him, at that moment, she was the only person in the room. The only face he cared about in the crowded bar was hers, and now, it was right here, standing in front of him.
“You’ve got quite the talent,” She curled her sheer, gloss-coated lips up into a grin as she leaned on the top of the piano, looking directly at Bradley.
“I’m a man of many talents, this was just a couple of them on display,” He nodded his head once, trying to keep his composure as she leaned towards him, willing his eyes to not wander down her body, “I’m Bradley. Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw, US Naval Air Force,” He said his title with a sense of pride that he hoped didn’t come off as bragging.
“Nice to meet you, Lieutenant,” She grinned, pointing to his empty beer bottle that sat atop the piano beside her, “Care to grab another one of those with me?”
“Absolutely,” Bradley said as he hopped off the piano bench at an almost breakneck pace, leaving Jake, Bob, Reuben and Mickey fighting off fits of laughter at Bradley’s eagerness.

Build Up Episode 8 Recap: Episode 8 conclusion
Tumblr media
Hello! It’s time for to finish recapping MNET’s Build Up, episode 8! In the previous one, we saw a team of balladeers sing a pleasant ballad. Now it’s time to find out who won the night, and who will have to pack their knives and go. Let’s do it!
So, we learn that the ultimate ranking for the night will be determined by the judges, the onsite, and the internet based views. Dahee announces that it’s time for the audience to vote.
The guys are nervous while the audience votes. The judges wonder what the audience voted.
Now time has passed and the audience seems to have left. Dahee announces the top 2 teams -- it’s DongupJarur / Partners....
Tumblr media
and Milky Up
Tumblr media
Backstage, the members of Waterfire just sit in silence
Tumblr media
while the sounds of their neighbors in other Small Rooms are going nuts celebrating.
Bitsaeon feels defeated and Minseo is deeply anxious, but Jay is cool as a cucumber.
Tumblr media
Hey, stick with me, kid. Ride the Jay-coaster and we'll ride back up to safety. It's going to be ok. I'm Jay, if you didn't notice. -- Jay, probably
He knows how audience votes work.
And then, AND THEN, AND FUCKING THEN, THE FUCKING JUDGES SAY
Tumblr media
…that the battle between Milky Up and Partners is “atmosphere versus skill.” They’re openly admitting that Partners is skilled while all Milky Up had is atmosphere. I can’t. I can’t.
Tumblr media
The scores are revealed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milky Up has taken first place, despite being voted Low Tier at the midterms!
Tumblr media
Haram falls to his knees. His legs just give out from under him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jeup, who is classy as well as a genius, smiles genuinely and applauds.
Tumblr media
He also pats his teammates on the back and says “good job, good job.”
We find out that Milky Up ranked first in both the judges’ and the on-site evaluators scores, and Partners came in second in both as well.
Seohyung thanks his team, and Donghun says they finished the performance without any regrets.
Then something awful happens and Baekho is like “I have something to say” and he calls Bain out for not having abs.
Tumblr media
Ugh. I know in Korean culture this kind of thing is allowed but also Korea has the highest su!cide rate in the developed world so…. IDK, maybe rethink it? A little?
The judges basically imply that maybe if Bain had also had abs the team would have won and I hate it, I hate it so much, I hate it so so so much.
On a brighter note, team Uptown Funk is super happy and it’s cute.
Tumblr media
The guys in Partners are like, “aww, let the babies enjoy the moment.” Not in a mean way, though.
The other three teams come up on stage to find out who is going to be eliminated.
Judge Wendy voice overs: “I don’t feel well.”
Who will come in third? After a lot of wasting time and speculating, we find out that it’s Hunminjaybit, Jay’s team!
Tumblr media
The judges are shooketh.
Solar is all, “jinjja?” Yeah, really, Solar, really. The audience saw the performance and liked it because it was good. You guys were, I don’t know, waiting for the second coming of Jesus or something. I don’t know what happened there.
Tumblr media
Jay is doing a little act of being astonished by the score. You knew the fans were going to come through for you, you goober.
Tumblr media
Either that or he really needs glasses.
Jay’s team scored last in the judges ranking, but third in the evaluator’s score. (We are told the various points from various sources -- I’ll go through that at the end, never fear.)
The fourth placed team is finally announced after lots of Vivaldi and speculation (and a commercial): It’s Waterfire who has survived, while Doremifa has been eliminated.
Tumblr media
Doremifa is like, welp. What’cha’gon’do.
Tumblr media
Everyone else is sad. There are some talented singers in this group.
Junhyeok takes the mic and thanks everyone in general. He says he only regrets that this team could only perform together once.
Tumblr media
Yeo One seems cool with it. He is ready to go back to his solo career.
We don’t get to hear from Waterfire at all and find out how they feel about surviving. Thanks, MNET! Themnet.
We see a brief preview of next week’s episode and I’m already annoyed so that’s great.
Ok, so let’s talk NUMBERS.
Here are all the points from this round. I got this from reddit and now I can’t find the post, so I apologize to the awesome Redditor I stole this from. Hopefully she’ll reply to the comment I left on her post so I can find it again!
Tumblr media
As you can see, the online voting score counted almost not at all. It was really just the one-site evaluation that really ended up mattering, since the difference between the highest and lowest judging score was only 30 points and the difference between the highest and second highest audience vote was more than twice that. But I do think it’s interesting that the online voting ranked Drowning so high. I wonder if it was actually kind of bad in person somehow? Like if they messed up in some way? Seunghun interviewed that the performance was “regrettable” in someway, so I do wonder about that. I didn’t notice any specific problems but maybe they’ve done better in rehearsal.
I was also curious about Youtube views. So, I checked the views on all three versions of all five performances, and then I did a bit of math. Well, my spreadsheet did a lot of the math for me. Check it out.
Tumblr media
The percents column is the percent of all views on all fifteen videos. Clearly, Drowning is way in the lead in terms of views, though it does trail slightly behind Guilty in the “full cam” version. As of now, March 23, Drowning’s three videos account for 36.18% of all the views of all fifteen videos. That’s more than a third. Guilty is solidly in second place, 27.71% of the views. The other three together have 36.10% of the views -- less than Drowning has all by itself.
As for me, my ranking of the performances is:
Guilty
Guilty
Drowning
Uptown Funk
Drama
Gift
Is it weird that Gift came in sixth place when there were only five performances? Nope.
Well, I may or may not write a rant about how much I love Guilty at some point, but the storm stopped and My Fella wants to watch X-Men ‘97 and eat popcorn, so I’ll see you in the next one!

The Warm-Up 3: Pro Wrestling GRIND “Masters Of Reality”- 4/28/2023
“The Human Monster Truck” Perry Von Vicious (7-7) vs. Bryce Donovan (0-0) Perry Last 3: Derek Neal d. Perry Von Vicious - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Perry Von Vicious d. Ryan Galeone - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Perry Von Vicious d. WARHORSE - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Bryce Last 3: Shook Crew d. Mane Event - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Rip & WARHORSE d. Shook Crew - Fear Of The Dark - 9/4/2022 Jay Freddie & The Saito Brothers d. Shook Crew & Dante Drago - Come & Get It - 5/27/2022 Just as Bobby Orlando vs Ryan Mooney will be a clash of speed kings, Bryce Donovan vs Perry Von Vicious is a test of all-rounded might.  Both stand at well over 6 feet and yet are not afraid to take to the skies or grit their teeth and slug it out.  Perry looks to avenge a Rip Byson singles loss to Bryce from Blitzkrieg Pro years back, while Bryce would make a thunderous statement in taking down a Day 1 GRINDer in his singles debut. Will Perry take his first step back towards Grand Championship contention?  Can Bryce topple the Human Monster Truck or will Perry roar to victory?! “Uptown” Andy Brown (2-2) vs. Griffin McCoy (0-0) Andy Last 3: Andy Brown d. Brandon Williams - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Andy Brown d. Danny Miles - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Perry Von Vicious d. Andy Brown - Sinister Urge - 12/2/2022 Rising stars in the tri-state area set for a first-time ever collision as the surging Andy Brown takes on the debuting Griffin McCoy.  Both west coast imports are well-rounded and battle-tested strikers that can shift phases by the second.  Can Big Griff capture the ever-elusive debut GRIND victory or will Andy Brown make it 3 in a row and possibly cement himself as the next GRIND Grand Championship contender? “God Queen” Delmi Exo (6-3) vs. “Courageous” Christina Marie (0-0) Delmi Last 3: B3CCA d. Delmi Exo - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Delmi Exo d. Jac St. Jean - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Emi Sakura d. Delmi Exo - All We Are - 12/31/2022 “The God Queen” Delmi Exo welcomes a new gladiatrix to the Emerald Ring in the form of the powerful “Courageous” Christina Marie.  Christina has competed all across the Northeast and is no stranger to high-pressure debuts, while Delmi looks to bounce back from a loss to International Pop Sensation B3CCA and rise to the top 5 of the GRIND Singles Rankings.  Will Christina succeed where so many other warriors have failed and notch a successful debut against the matriarch of GRIND?  Or will the Rise of the God Queen continue?! “The Goatest Of All Time” Bobby Orlando (0-0) vs. “Rabid” Ryan Mooney (6-4) Bobby Last 3:  Shook Crew d. Mane Event - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Rip & WARHORSE d. Shook Crew - Fear Of The Dark - 9/4/2022 Jay Freddie & The Saito Brothers d. Shook Crew & Dante Drago - Come & Get It - 5/27/2022 Mooney Last 3:  Ryan Mooney d. Ichiban - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Anthony Henry d. Ryan Mooney - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Jay Freddie d. Ryan Mooney - Electric Crown - 9/30/2022 Tri-state junior gods collide as one of the longest reigning singles champions in New England wrestling history in Bobby Orlando makes his singles debut against GRIND mainstay “The Rabid Honey Badger” Ryan Mooney!  Mooney came very close to tasting singles gold of his own in the Emerald 12, beating Alec Price and Rip Byson before falling to Jay Freddie in the semifinals, and looks to build on his recent victory over Ichiban.  Will the Shook Crew go 2 for 2 in singles debuts?  Is The GOATest Of All Time on the cusp of starting another legendary singles tear?! Or will Ryan Mooney make it two straight in his neverending quest to mark GRIND as Honey Badger Territory?! A-GAME/SKYROS II “Moonlight Son” Mike Skyros (3-3) vs. “A-Game” Joseph Alexander (3-4) Skyros Last 3: Mike Skyros d. Ryan Clancy - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Mane Event d. Moonlight Hornets - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Mike Skyros d. JD Drake - All We Are - 12/31/2022 A-Game Last 3: Joseph Alexander d. Rip Byson - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Manders d. Joseph Alexander - Sinister Urge - 12/2/2022 Joseph Alexander d. Nolo Kitano - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Our first of two rematches on the evening is from July 2022 at “Doctor Doctor,” a night where Joseph Alexander captured his first victory at GRIND at the expense of the at-the-time also-winless Mike Skyros.  This time around, this is a Mike Skyros who has since found victory in 2 of his last 3 contests, and notably 3 of his last 3 singles contests.  A-Game has also been victorious in 2 of his last 3 contests, and now both combatants are on the cusp of Grand Championship contention.  Who walks out the winner in A-Game/Skyros II?! STRAP MATCH “Iron” Rip Byson (8-4-1) vs. “King’s Road Slayer” Derek Neal (1-0-1) Rip Last 3: Joseph Alexander d. Rip Byson - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Rip Byson d. ZPB - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Gary Jay d. Rip Byson - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Derek Last 2:  Derek Neal d. Perry Von Vicious - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Derek Neal nc. Rip Byson - Come & Get It - 5/27/2022 The two most decorated Strap Match participants going today lock horns with an endless amount of bad blood between them.  Just as Perry looks to avenge a Ripper loss to Bryce Donovan from Blitzkrieg Pro years ago, Ripper looks to avenge Perry’s loss to Derek Neal last time around at Stiff Upper Lip.  This only stokes the fire that started at Come & Get It nearly a year ago when the first singles bout between The King’s Road Slayer and Easthampton’s Iron Horse went to a no-contest after the referee attempted to assert some order and received a pair of fists for his trouble.  Who will survive what is certain to be one of the most ferocious battles in GRIND history?! GRIND GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP (V5) Anthony Henry (3-0) vs. “Blue Thunder” Jay Freddie (12-1) (c) Henry Last 3:  Anthony Henry d. Ryan Mooney - All We Are - 12/31/2022 Anthony Henry d. Alec Price - Celebration Day - 10/28/2022 Anthony Henry d. Travis Huckabee - Doctor Doctor - 7/1/2022 Freddie Last 3:  Jay Freddie d. Channing Thomas (V4) - Stiff Upper Lip - 3/24/2023 Jay Freddie d. Bryan Keith (V3) - Overkill 2023 - 2/24/2023 Jay Freddie d. O’Shay Edwards (V2) - All We Are - 12/31/2022 The time has come.  Champion and challenger have been on a collision course since Jay Freddie toppled Anthony Henry’s partner JD Drake at Overkill in January 2022.  And now the stakes are infinitely higher as the Grandest Prize in GRIND hangs in the balance.  The series is split between the two, Henry got the victory in their singles encounter at Limitless “Hysteria” while Freddie & John Silver defeated The Workhorsemen at “Only Fools Are Satisfied.”  But this will be the first time they’ve touched in over 5 years, and each are far better versions now of the wrestlers they were then.  Can Jay Freddie make a successful 5th defense on his 6 month anniversary as champion or will Anthony Henry cap off his 10 month journey to the top contender’s slot as the 2nd GRIND Grand Champion? See you Friday in Easthampton! - JT

Build Up Episode 8 Recap: Do Re Mi Fa, Gift
Tumblr media
Hello! It’s time for me, BPR Unnie, to continue recapping MNET’s Build Up, episode 8! In the previous one, we saw a team with no name cover Uptown Funk and make everyone dance. In this one, we’ll see a team of balladeers sing a ballad. Will that win the night? We’ll find out! Let’s go!
Hey look!
Tumblr media
It’s Glasses Baekho™!  He just looked so cute I had to take a screen shot. This show is so great. Isn’t this show great?
Dahee calls the team up on stage.
Tumblr media
They introduce themselves by singing “do-re-mi-fa,” and in a moment of brilliance, Dahee says, “And you have Do-re-mi-fa-SOLAR over there!” (Get it? Do-re-me-fa-so-la.)
Tumblr media
Look how proud Dahee is. Hey Dahee, join my improv team!
Solar jokes back and everyone is having a great time and I wish I were fluent in Korean! I learn two or three words a month so I’ll be fluent in a thousand years, so look forward to that!
Glasses Baekho™ says this team is the only ballad team, and that they ranked first in the interim check. Ah, so that’s how they earned the right to choose the running order.
Tumblr media
Junhyeok has put on a fair bit of concealer and blush, I think. But it looks good.
We cut back to the interim check.
Tumblr media
OMG, new and different Glasses Baekho™? I want to collect them all!
Baekho announces that Gwangseok’s team has ranked first place, but the team doesn’t look pleased at the news.
Tumblr media
Junhyeok says he’s “more startled than happy” because “they don’t think we’re their competition.” The team thinks that the other guys chose them as the top tier precisely because they are NOT top tier. And… they’re right.
Tumblr media
Hey look, it’s Jeup and Donghun. Imagine seeing them? On this show? There they are! Hi!
Bitsaeon explains, “Although they said to pick the top tier based on the performance, I think all teams were thinking quite strategically.”
We see that Bitsaeon’s team was tempted to pick Jeup’s team as the best, but decided not to give them that boost. Soomin’s team would have picked Jay’s team as the best, but again, didn’t, and Sunyoul’s team thinks along the same lines.

The song they’re doing is Gift by Park Hyo Shin, a song released in 2009 that “conveys the singer’s pain and hopes”.
Sample lyrics:
Whatever others said, I told them I’m not weak, and tolerated such days with tears They didn’t know me, and didn’t even want to listen to what I had to say Left alone in the darkness of the night, one, two, three, I count the stars and in the moment that the morning sky appears… Today, the sky seems like a gift someone left behind for me Under its warmth, stronger than yesterday’s, if you are like me, Listen to this song now, close your eyes, and when you open them once more, It’s going to be alright!!
Ah, if only they had talked to me. I could have told them that songs with a “it’s going to be alright!” messages always (1) get the audience clapping and singing and long and (2) lose. Always. Find me a time that a “it’s going to be alright” song on any Produce/Planet type show has ever, ever won. They often come in last place! I don’t know why. Everyone enjoys them, and no one votes for them.
Bitsaeon, Donghun, and Soomin voice over things like, “It was a predictable song” and “They did what they’re used to doing” and “It’s the same every round.”

Donghun’s team must not have picked Yeo One’s team as the top tier, because on the mic, he says “I think we can easily beat you this time.”
Yeo One has a sassy comeback, but… it doesn’t quite land.

Junhyeok interviews, “I think we made a bad choice.”
They decide to have an emergency meeting at a… convenience store by the docks, I guess?
Tumblr media
I mean, they might as well meet outside since apparently buildings aren’t heated in Korea.
Junhyeok says: “Since we established vocalist image that only does ballad….” And Yeo One chimes in: The performances we've shown could have been quite limited.” They’ve done a lot of emotional songs -- maybe it’s time to freshen things up.
They want to show a bright and fun side and decide to add a bit of movement.
Yeo One is their performance expert, and he comes up with some basic semi-choreo for them to do.

They have fun preparing.

And then… it’s time to perform!

My thoughts:
Pleasant.
Tumblr media
I don’t know what else to say about it. Everyone did fine -- well, Junhyeok was pitchy on that first big high note -- but it’s like I was forgetting about the performance even while I was watching it. There are a lot of distinctive voices here, but this was just so… aggressively pleasant.
I think this would have been a great song for a group to perform at the end of a long concert. You know, when they’ve built up a lot of good will throughout the night and everyone’s kind of emotionally spent and wants to have a sort of “credits role” moment as the encore. The group comes out wearing their tour-merch t-shirts and everyone sways. Great. I’m on board. But it’s just the wrong choice for the only song that you can sing.
It’s weird because Junhyeok said he knew they’d made a bad choice, and they thought they could dress it up with a little bit of extremely lite choreo? I don’t get it. I think they didn’t understand the assignment the way that Jeup did.

In the MNET edit, everyone likes the performance.

Wendy does her best to smile with her new lips.
The judges comment on how nice Yeo One sounds, and what a great voice Gwangseok has.
Tumblr media
Eunkwang has to exchange looks with Wendy and Jaehwan over Junhyeok’s sweet tone.
Everyone is a little surprised and pleased when things brighten up and they do that tiny bit of choreo (lining up and stepping away one at a time). Yeo One gets the audience to wave their arms in unison.
We see Wendy a lot. She seems to be really enjoying it.

When one of them say “BASU!” (clap), the audience does clap, but they can’t find the beat, and neither can the judges. Looks like many of the judges have their in-ear monitors out.
When they’re done, the judges applaud, but Solar looks like she wants to wish herself into space.

Seohyung backstage says, “They tried to give the finale feel, like an encore,” and that’s true, they did, but it just sort of makes you nostalgic for the other performances from the night.
Donghun, who had his filter shot off in the war, says, “They’re desperate. They’re all on the edge.”
The judges are voting…
Tumblr media
… and they don’t look thrilled.
The high score comes in, and it’s a 94.
Tumblr media
What in the fuckity fuck fuck.

Meanwhile, Jay’s team is just like….
I wish the judges could go back and just admit they were wrong about Jay’s team. Don’t any of them even take a moment to think, “Hey, I gave Drowning a 90 or less, do I really want to give this team a fucking 94?” But someone gave a fucking 94. Whatever.
Solar, on the other hand, isn’t super complimentary. She says: “The song itself was well suited for the finale. It’s a hopeful song, and you sang it very hopefully, but there was no narrative to the performance, so the hopeful message wasn’t really conveyed.”
Tumblr media
VCG says: “In terms of performances, some share the hope with the audience, while other asks them to witness the singers’ happiness. Your performance was the latter.” The on-screen caption says “It seemed like a performance for the four members, not for the audience to empathize.”  He isn’t thrilled with how they used Gwangseok (I think he thinks there wasn’t enough Gwangseok? There didn’t seem to be enough of anything or anyone!) and says “If you get another chance, show me something deep.”
Eunkwang, who gave the 94 -- and who I think might have been the only one who really liked the performance-- says, “I actually felt differently. That’s how diverse the audience’s ears are. During the entire performance, I felt cozy and overwhelmed. Like I was in the clouds.” He praises Gwangseok and the team as a whole.
Well, that’s nice that they got some good feedback. I find Junhyeok a sort of touching figure somehow and wouldn’t want him to be completely bulldozed in this round. Life has bulldozed him enough!
And that’s about it for this post. In the last one, I’ll cover the last 15 minutes of this episode, and do a general wrap up of this round of competition.
It’s a gross stormy day where I live and I have a sad tummy, so what else am I going to do but surround myself with squishmallows and watch Korean tv shows? My Fella just made another pot of coffee for us, my afternoon appointments all canceled due to the storm, I’ve got my microwavable slippers on, so let’s do this.
See you in the next one! And have a very Jeup day until then!
