CHATEAU PENTAGON

Except for the beautiful grand piano, this beautiful chateau was almost completely empty. Nice details here and there, such as the bathroom and the stairs. The building needs a makeover, but there is clearly no sign of serious decay (yet). The castle was named Chateau Pentagon because of the special floor plan of the building. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about its history... 

The domain is monitored by a guard. At the time of our visit, he suddenly appeared in the entrance hall. As soon as he understood that we meant no harm, he relaxed. A pleasant conversation ensued and we even got to finish our photos.

"SiT 2 FaDE И DECaY" Originally named Canyon Padre Trading Post when it was built in the late 1940’s off the historic Route 66. It was renamed Twin Arrows in 1957 to pay homage to next stop, 2 Guns. 1 of 2000 famous Valentine Diners is located here, it’s badly damaged, but came ready to use when delivered & was created by Arthur Valentine out of Wichita, Kansas. Twins Arrows was owned by the Troxell Family from 1955 to 1985. When the I-40 was built in the 1970’s the “Best Little Shop on I-40” saw a decline. Twin Arrows closed in 1990 & reopened in 1995 but closed forever shortly after. Now this once popular stop sits in utter decay, slowing returning back into the ground. CHAPELLE DE LA PRINCESSE

The former hospice, of which this chapel is a part, was built in several phases. During the construction of the third part, this special chapel was erected around 1865. The chapel's huge domed vault and late neoclassical interior make it a particularly interesting and unique example of architecture in the region. Even in later expansions of the hospital complex, it was always decided to keep the chapel and its entrance, precisely because of its special architectural character.

With regard to the chapel's interior, the unique 19th century neo-Gothic main altar deserves special mention. The chapel was decorated with various polychrome statues with their wall plinths, fourteen paintings of the Stations of the Cross and a painting of the patron saint of the chapel and the hospice. All these decorations have since disappeared. The two glass paintings from 1900 in the choir and above one of the sacristy doors are still intact. The large gallery, protected by a wooden balustrade, overlooks part of the sanctuary and is accessible from the upper floor. The entrance portal and the monumental stairwell of the old hospice are a very fine example of the golden age of iron in the second half of the 19th century.

The chapel was open to the public until the departure, in 1968, of the Daughters of the Cross. Since then, it has been reserved for residents of the hospital complex, which has since been converted into a nursing home. During its heyday, the chapel regularly enjoyed the visit of a number of members of the royal family, who had a country house in the area.
