The Surfboard Galaxy (M108, upper right) and the Owl Nebula (M97, lower left) // David Cheng

Located near the Owl Nebula (M97) on the sky, the Surfboard Galaxy was discovered by Méchain in 1781, only three nights after he found M97. Messier himself observed it about a month later, although he didn't measure its position and so did not include it in his catalog.

William Herschel (1738-1822) independently discovered it in 1789. It wasn't until 1953 when American astronomer Owen Gingerich (1930-2023) identified it as M108.

Leaning heavily on the celestial moon bear concept 🌔🐻🌠 Big loves to my patrons a year ago who funded this design challenge <3 ✨From an undisclosed pokemon region: 🧸Teddiursa - Normal/Psychic - The sweet dreams pokemon - Teddiursa are often gifted to young children as they are exceedingly gentle and kind. They comfort their trainer & protect them from bad dreams. It can use its psychic abilitiy to put up protective barriers. 🌕 Ursaring - Normal/Psychic - The star pokemon - Ursaring upon evolving are often separated from their child companions. Their more intimidating appearance can scare sensitive kids. As Ursaring they are often more aggressive & hard to train. However they view it as a great betrayal to be left behind & get yet more unruly. Ursaring are often the star performers of traveling circuses. 🌠 Ursaluna - Psychic/Ghost - The celestial pokemon - Ursaluna are exceptionally rare to see, as they spend most of their lives up among the stars. When moving through the stratosphere their brightly flowing mane and tail looks like a shooting comet. There is an old folk tale about how Ursaluna lost it's tail, coming down to earth to live as Ursaring. The few trainers who have had their Teddiursa from childhood & grown up to train it from Ursaring to Ursaluna have the strongest bond of any pokemon and trainer. It attacks using blinding light & crushing claw strength, though it is hard to land a hit on in it's incorporeal form.
