I hope you all will allow me this post on Pedrenzo day. It won't be as well sourced as the previous ones, but I think we deserve a chronology.
Pre-World championship. They meet for the first time at the CEV (2000), but they have know about each other before that. They are both close to age (19 months) and both were pretty small. At this point, they use the other rider as a reference more than as a rival as they both are fighting against people older and more experience than them with the handicap of their age and height.
In 125cc (2002 and 2003) During this period of time, their rivalry started, but it was pretty tame. It's also important to note that it was mostly external factors that started it rather than the riders itself. Dani was racing for Telefonica/Movistar and Jorge for Caja Madrid/Fortuna), which made them two very young rider, with lots of talent and pretty promising, in Spanish teams. Their teams weren't friendly against each other, and their manager also used to be rivals. All of it, made the riders feel like they had to beat the other in the track at all cost. it got to the point on wanting to know the other's position to see if they have placed higher.
We also had their characters component, that is something that will follow them their whole life. Dani is quite and calm. He does things behind close doors and the talking on the track. Where Jorge is loud, very loud, and he uses the media and does the talking in the open. They also had 0 contact outside track between them, not even a 'hi' when meeting at the paddock.
In 250cc (2005) In here their 125cc rivalry is intensify. Dani was already 2 times World Champion and Jorge had still to prove himself. Dani was the dominant force to beat and Jorge wanted to be the one to do that. There was also the talking everyone did on the media, that fueled their rivalry. Everyone was accusing everyone of doing things. (mostly Puig, Amatriaín and Jorge).
In this year, the thing between them got much worse as they made contact on track several times. Germany is mentioned as the time that set everything into flames, but Catalunya was the turning point. Due to his excess of aggressiveness (and probably unconsciousness and stupidity), Jorge got a race ban (Malaysia 2005) after he made contact at the Japanese GP with De Angelis and Dani. Jorge used to blame Dani for that because instead of helping him, Dani took out all the receipts of the contact they made on track, which was the nail in Jorge's coffin according to Lorenzo. Older Jorge will admit he deserved it and that it was a turning point for him.
It's during this time when Dani refused to say Jorge's name or mention him (Germany 2005 forward), which pissed Jorge. And I think it still pisses him to some extend.
So by the time Dani moved to MotoGP, they were at each other's throats, specially with the media, and with Dani as a 3 times Word Champion and Jorge still needing to prove himself.
MotoGP When Jorge made it to MotoGP, media expected them pick their rivalry where they left it, and it kind of did with the Qatar incident. In that Grand Prix Dani didn't congratulate Jorge after a good result, and it pissed Jorge. Years later we learn it was due to an injury. However, it put them in the 'not speaking' terms and labelled as bitter rivals. The following Grand Prix, the ex-King of Spain (Juan Carlos I), who is a fan of racing, tried to show they get along and it was just a misunderstanding made them shake hands at the pre-podium.
Tumblr media
Instead of cleaning the air in between them or cleaining their image it made it all worse. It looked like they couldn't be in the same room if they weren't forced to share the space.
On track they keep fighting hard against each other, more cleanly this time, and still with the same mentality as in 125cc and 250cc. If I can't win because there are other riders doing/having a better day than me, at least I have to beat Dani/Jorge.
Allegedly, 2008 was the worse point in their rivalry, but when asked them directly, they was the period of time between 2008-2010. Their rivalry got to that point it split the whole country. People were genuinely asking if you were Team Dani or Team Jorge. There are still videos of young Spanish riders having to choose (the Márquez used to be die hard Dani fans and Rins was team Jorge all the way).
Little by little, after fighting so much and for so long against each other, and sharing so many space and podiums together, their relationship moved from bitter rivals, to just rivals, to the rival I respect. Dani said that for him the big change was 2012, when their championship fight was the closes. Dani realized that he had been fighting his whole life with Jorge, therefore, they are as good as the other. Their rivalry had made them grown as riders because they had to outsmart and be better on track than the other, so it was a hats off moment.
In 2012 we also had the first physical approach between them. It was also in Qatar when they hugged for the first time, and it was a symbol of them finally burying the hatchet.
Tumblr media
2012 also gave us the iconic marriage proposal (please watch the whole video, it explains Pedrenzo rivalry up to 2012).
From then on, their relationship improved a lot. It could also be that they both had change their managers by 2013, so part of what it set their rivalry wasn't in the equation anymore. They also had grown from kids to adults!
In 2015 Dani invited Jorge to Sete Gibernau's (ex-ride, and Dani's friend and coach) 'ranch'/track for a training weekend among other riders. Jorge ended up getting injured, and Dani went out of his way to check on him because Jorge was fighting for the championship. He got injured in the collarbone and Jorge himself admitted it was dumb because he just wanted to win against Dani when racing with smaller bikes. Apparently Pedrosa was miles faster than any other riders (Rins was there and I think the Espargarós too are mentiones
In 2018, when it was announced that Jorge was moving from Ducati to Honda and was going to replace Dani, Jorge tried to convince Pedrosa to stay in the championship by switching to the Petrona's team. It was pretty public with Jorge saying how a much smoother bike will suit Dani's riding style. Ultimately, Dani decided he didn't want to break anymore bones or suffer, so he retired.
Tumblr media
Jorge and Dani exchanging helmets at the end of the 2018 season
After MotoGP Now they have a pretty good relationship. They can be in the same room and laugh and talk for hours about racing, including their 250cc races. Jorge will be the one pulling all the monts and remembering the weirdest stuff and Dani will look bamboozled because he doesn't remember that. In fact, among all DAZN's pundits, Jorge is the one that makes Dani smile and talk the most.
They're pretty quick to mention the other rider when possible (specially Jorge), and they are pretty open when asked about their battles in and out of the track. In fact Jorge will jump at any opportunity to mention and praise Dani. Dani will need a bit more of coaxing, but he will also talk and praise Jorge.
Now that the know parts are about, I want to share some thought I have about them.
I think this imatge basically summarizes their relationship. And creditto Jorge Lorenzo himself for putting it together.
Tumblr media
First photo is pretty early in their relationship. You can see that they aren't interested in each other. It's basically a photo for the media. The middle one is Jerez 2008 and you can see how forced their handshake is. The king gets the wrong hand, and all of them are confused and wants to be done with it. And the last one, it's more than a handshake. They are truly happy and comfortable around the other. They want it.
Waru's thoughts I think young Jorge was really mad at Dani and wanted to win Dani no matter what due to the different way they got into the championship. All red tapes were broken for Dani. His ages was overlooked when he entered the Movistar Cup, when Jorge had to wait until he was 15 to make his debut. Dani had Puig who saw him and decided to bring him to the top, despite not meeting the criteria that was set, while Jorge had to fight and crawl all his way up. Yes Jorge got a manager and his dad, but he also had to prove himself over and over while Dani could flop and Puig would have still been at his side. It's also the relationship between Dani and his dad. Antonio was there to guide and support Dani, but at the end of the day it was Dani who took the decision, while Jorge didn't have a great relationship with his dad. Chicho acted more as a coach than a dad.
And then when Dani got the 125cc tittle, he got the ColaCao add, that made him look as the good boy that hasn't broken anything, while Jorge had the bad boy label. Dani had everything he wanted, DORNA's approval as he has come thought a DORNA's approved championship, a good relationship with his dad, a great mentor and a team behind. Basically it could be seen as DORNA had picked Dani to be the next Spanish winner at the big category (see why I translated Elegido para ganar as handpicked to win?) and instead, Jorge was the one who did it.
So yes, I think Jorge saw Dani having everything he had fighter for, and not having had to fight as hard as hi. So apart of all the things mentioned above, I think there was a bit of jealousy involved too. But well this is what I think, I might be wrong, but the way Jorge reacts when the ColaCao add is mentioned is prove that there was more there.
And here is all the chronology. If you think I forgot anything let me know! Also feel free to add things if you want.

so with this weekend being the canadian gp, i'd like to take a moment and bring attention to the indigenous peoples who have suffered immensely at the hands of settler-colonizers on this land. (note that i'm only an ally, so if there are indigenous folks living in what's now considered montreal and/or quebec on f1blr, by all means please take the floor!)
canada is known for its cultural mosaic and for being the friendly country full of nice people who say aboot and use maple syrup with everything. our "origin story" is boring--conferences instead of a civil war? talk about a snoozefest in high school history. anyway, universal health care, moose, hockey, french, et cetera (/sarcasm). so it's understandable that people buy into the propaganda! even most canadians are proud of this image.
but beneath the surface, i think our propaganda is just as, if not more, insidious than that of the united states (our closest and most comparable neighbour). the truth is, canada is complicit in attempted genocide. around this time last year, the bodies of 215 indigenous children were unearthed from a residential school in BC. there are thousands of unmarked graves where residential schools were.
but this isn't history; this is now. the last residential school closed in 1997. the indian act of 1876 was last amended in 2002. and still, indigenous peoples in saskatoon are given "starlight tours" where police take them to the middle of nowhere to freeze to their deaths; our laws are such that indigenous peoples and their families cannot claim indian status and gain any benefits if they marry a non-indigenous person; reserves are without basic resources like access to potable water and nigh on unlivable; the rcmp have killed inuit sled dogs; funding to indigenous initiatives has repeatedly been denied by the government; and so, so much more that would take more than a text post on tumblr to convey the horrors of.
montreal, originally tiohtià:ke, is on unceded kanien’kehá:ka territory, which is part of the haudenosaunee nation. it's land under the hiawatha wampum belt and the dish with one spoon agreement, which together promote peace, unity, and responsibility to the land. the dish with one spoon in particular speaks to how we only have one dish--that's earth--and we should only take what we need, leaving resources for others while keeping the earth clean.
as far as being actionable, i can't give a definitive, be-all end-all list of things you can do. but if you're going to the grand prix, i at least recommend trying out the following:
PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF. honour the agreement! we're usually pretty good at about recycling and sorting garbage, and though i've never been to the circuit, i would honestly be surprised if there weren't green bins and paper and plastic recycling along with regular garbage bins. (nb if ur gonna try canadian things: tim hortons coffee cups are NOT recyclable, but their ice capp/frozen drink cups are!)
educate yourself! i'll link a couple sites below where you can get started, but for an introduction, i cannot recommend chelsea vowel's indigenous writes enough. it's a fantastically written guide to first nations, métis, and inuit issues in canada, and it's fairly recent too!
start following indigenous activism!!! for starters and to learn a little bit of the history, you can read up on the idle no more movement.
if you have questions or want to know more, i've got some pdfs and other recommended reading, but really you can learn a lot by going down rabbit holes. again, if someone who is actually indigenous wants to speak on this, i will gladly step aside!
some starter links:
"Learn about the Land and Peoples of Tiohtià:ke/ Montreal" - mcgill
215 bodies - the guardian
residential schools - ubc indigenous foundations
the indian act - ubc indigenous foundations

The Murder of Martha Moxley
Tumblr media
October 01, 2023
On October 30, 1975, 15 year old Martha Moxley went out with her friends to "mischief night" which was a night where all the neighbourhood kids would pull pranks on the neighbours, such as ding dong ditch and TP'ing houses.
According to the other kids there that night, Martha had been flirting with a boy named Thomas Skakel and even kissed him. Thomas had an older brother named Michael. Their mother had died in 1973 from brain cancer and that was when Michael turned to drinking. It was said that the Skakel's would be given large sums of money and would be left unsupervised a lot.
The last time anyone saw Martha she was apparently with Thomas behind a fence, near the boy's pool in his backyard. This was at 9:30pm.
The following day, October 31, 1975, Halloween, Martha's body was found underneath a tree in her own backyard. Her pants and underwear were pulled down, though it was later determined she had not been sexually assaulted.
Pieces of a broken six-iron golf club were found near her. The autopsy indicated that she had been bludgeoned and stabbed with the club. The club was owned by the Skakel's.
Since Thomas Skakel was the last person to have been with Martha the night before he became the prime suspect. His father however, denied authorities to get any access to Thomas' school and mental health records.
Thomas' live in tutor, Kenneth Littleton also became a prime suspect. He had only started working a few hours before the murder. Neither Thomas or Kenneth were charged and the case was cold for decades.
Over the years both Thomas and his brother Michael changed their alibi's for the night Martha was murdered. Michael claimed he was window-peeping and masturbating in a tree beside Martha's home from 11:30 pm to 12:30 am.
Two former students who had gone to a centre for troubled youths reported they had heard Michael confess to killing Martha with a golf club. One of these students quoted Michael as having said, "I'm gong to get away with murder. I'm a Kennedy." Michael's aunt was the widow of US Senator, Robert F. Kennedy. Michael supposedly had gotten special treatment at this centre.
A man named William Kennedy Smith was tried and acquitted for rape in 1991, and a rumour had begun that he had been at the Skakel house on the night Martha was killed. Though it was never confirmed if he had involvement, the case had a new investigation to go off of.
In June 1998, a one-man grand jury was set to review the evidence of the case. After 18 months, it was determined there was enough evidence to charge Michael Skakel with murder.
On January 9, 2000, Michael surrendered to authorities. He was released shortly after on a $500,000 bail. On March 14, 2000, Michael was arraigned for murder n juvenile court, because he was only 15 years old at the time of Martha's murder.
On January 31, 2001, a judged ruled he would be tried as an adult.
The trial began on May 7, 2002, in Connecticut. Michael's alibi at the time of the murder was that he was at his cousin's house. On June 7, 2002, Michael was found guilty of the murder of Martha Moxley. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
Skakel and his team fought for a new trial many times, often being denied. However, on October 23, 2013, Skakel was granted a new trial by Judge Thomas A. Bishop who ruled his attorney had failed to adequately represent Michael when he was convicted in 2002.
On November 21, 2013, Skakel was released on a $1.2 million bond and conditions. He had to be monitored with a GPS device and have no contact with the Moxley family. He would not be allowed to leave the state of Connecticut and would be periodically checked in on over the phone.
In December 2016, the Connecticut Supreme Court reinstated Skakel's murder conviction with a 4-3 majority decision. In 2018, they wanted the court to revoke Skakel's bail, and make him continue to serve his sentence in jail. Also in 2018 it was announced there would be a new trial ordered, but by October 2020, it was informed that Skakel would not be retried, with the state's chief saying the state would not be able to prove anything beyond a reasonable doubt.
Michael Skakel remains released.

Queen Camilla’s Patronages
The Royal Osteoporosis Society (President from 01.10.2001)
We’re the Royal Osteoporosis Society – the UK’s largest national charity dedicated to improving bone health and beating osteoporosis. And we’re here for everyone. We equip people with practical information and support to take action on their bone health.Working with healthcare professionals and policy-makers, we’re influencing and shaping policy and practice at every level. We’re driving the research and development of new treatments, to beat osteoporosis together. The charity was established in 1986 and has since grown into a well respected national charity.
In recognition of her tireless work for osteoporosis and her support of the charity, Her Majesty The Queen Consort became President of the Royal Osteoporosis Society in October 2001. Her Majesty first became a supporter of the charity in 1994, when her mother died as a result of osteoporosis, and she later become a patron in 1997.
Her first public speech was made in 2002 at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, hosted by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) in Lisbon. In this speech, The Duchess explained why fighting osteoporosis is so important to her:
“My family knew nothing about osteoporosis. The local GP was kind and sympathetic but he, like us, was able to do little to alleviate the terrible pain that my mother suffered so stoically. We watched in horror as she quite literally shrank before our eyes. She lost about eight inches in height and became so bent that she was unable to digest her food properly, leaving her with no appetite at all. In her latter years, she could not breathe without oxygen or even totter round her beloved garden on her Zimmer frame. I believe the quality of her life became so dismal and her suffering so unbearable that she just gave up the fight and lost the will to live. As a result of my mother’s death, I became determined to find some way of helping people with osteoporosis from experiencing the same fate and general disregard that she encountered. I was lucky enough to discover, on my doorstep, the National Osteoporosis Society, a relatively new and small charity, piloted by the indomitable Linda Edwards.”
Her poignant words did much to generate a significant amount of press interest in osteoporosis that year and those in attendance at this event used the occasion to urge policy makers across the globe to make the disease a priority for national health care agendas.
During her time as President, Her Majesty has taken an active and very personal interest in raising awareness of our work. Over the years, she has held receptions, attended events, met people living with the condition, and made many impassioned speeches.
In 2007, Her Majesty received the Kohn Foundation Award from Dr Ralph Kohn (later Sir Ralph Kohn) in recognition of her contribution to raising awareness of osteoporosis.

Luke Hughes x fashion editor! OC
Meet Satine Li aka Sally
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AU Masterlist
→ Satine was born May 7, 2002 to a business mogul father and actress/model mother in Monte Carlo, Monaco!
→ She went to boarding school when she was young and actually graduated pretty early due to her stellar grades and performance (she graduates around 16 years of age)!
→ Later moves to the east coast to pursue a higher education. She attends UPenn, Wharton Business School for two years and then goes to Parsons in NYC for a year!
→ Her name is Satine, but her nickname that everyone calls her is Sally-> it’s just a shortened version of her full name
→ She’s nearing her 20th birthday when she gets the opportunity to work directly under Anna Wintour! Later it evolves into her getting a fashion editor position! (Clarification that Anna Wintour is the editor-in-chief of Vogue and Satine is just a fashion editor so she doesn’t actually replace Anna!)
→ She’s modeled extensively (nepotism🫣..) before becoming a fashion editor and has met a lot of her long time friends from it (Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid, Amelia Gray andmore)!
Likes to cover a lot of areas of fashion and art! She’s known to create very creative spreads and lends her talent to vogues around the world! However, she’s really more well known to also merge fashion and sport together! She helped Louis Vuitton create THE well known Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo campaign and is known to help F1 racer Lewis Hamilton with his outfits during GP’s in the paddock and official events. She’s become Lewis’s unofficial stylist at this point!
→ Also because she is from Monaco, when she was younger she was and still is friends with the Leclerc family! Since Arthur and Charles are both racers- she also offers her fashionable expertise to them!
Random Facts:
→ If you guessed correctly her name is inspired by Satine of moulin rouge! I just love the name so much and it’s still pronounced “sa-teen”
→ She LOVES to cook! Her love language is cooking. Making homemade meals for those she loves is such a special thing for her. She regularly hosts dinner parties for her friends!
→ She’s known to be a fashion icon- but she doesn’t stick to any set style! She likes to dabble in random styles and doesn’t care about anyone’s opinion!
→ Seems intimidating because of her background, but is a total sweetheart!
→ Has a tik tok where she regularly goes viral because she posts a lot of pranks and dance videos with her friends! Not to mention her friends are superstars like Lewis Hamilton so she’s giving people CONTENT 😭
→ Also has a private tik tok account with no followers so she can favorite edits of different people (SHE’S ONE OF US!!)
Anyways…please enjoy some background on Satine!

leclerc!tennis player!reader who is born in 2002, the youngest in the family and plays on the WTA tour. her brothers are obviously very very over protective so if and if she does come to a gp which is rare since her schedule is always filled, she's always around one of the leclerc brothers. somehow, while travelling around the world for the tennis matches, she meets liam lawson and they start dating? and reader tells pascale but none of her brothers, and slowly, starts soft launching him, the world and the brothers all finding out at around the same time. make it dramatic! also an additional tid bit, she's actually very close to nico rosberg because he used to play tennis in monaco, so they still have matches when they are free and in monaco and he is often seen at her matches during his breaks. he is sort of the "wine aunt" ig?

Kaiju Week in Review (October 16-22, 2022)
Tumblr media
Japan got to hold the conch this week. I feel obligated to lead off with the trailer for the pachinko game P Godzilla vs. Evangelion: G Cell Awakening, although most of us will probably never get a chance to play it. King Ghidorah with an AT Field is pretty wild—but not as wild as that Bandai Spirits statue from the first year of this enduring crossover making the jump to animation.
Tumblr media
Toho released a seriously impressive trailer for the Fest Godzilla 3: Gigan's Attack short that will drop on November 3. The city set looks great, there's a shot from inside a miniature building, and even the old Final Wars Godzilla stunt suit seems to have been refurbished since last year's Godzilla vs. Hedorah short.
Tumblr media
Godziban released the fifth episode of its fourth season this week, in which the incredibly ripped Kinggoji-kun meets his cousins and competes with Godzilla-kun for Miyarabi's affections. Frankly, every episode that passes without Gigan's mom showing up feels like padding. Also, the English Godzilla channel is dragging its feet on subtitling this season; they might be waiting for it to finish for whatever reason. But they're all done with the first three seasons if you want to catch up.
Tumblr media
The merch highlight of the week is a pair of Godzilla trucks from Hot Wheels. The one on the left is based on the HINO heavy construction truck; the one on the right is, fittingly enough, a monster truck. These aren't the first tokusatsu-themed Hot Wheels cars—there was a Charawheels series from 2002-2004 and the Spider-Machine GP-7 from Spider-Man—but they are the first for Godzilla. They're dated for early 2023.
Tumblr media
Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle, which opened at Seibu-en last year, is getting an escape game extension called Godzilla the Mission: Escape from the Looming Danger of a Giant Monster. Taking place just before the ride begins, it places players in the roles of new members of the Special Disaster Countermeasures unit and tasks them with leading an evacuation as an unidentified flying object approaches and finding a shelter themselves. Again, not something most of us will be able to experience (it's only available for a limited time to boot), but the key art is neat.
Tumblr media
On top of the standard showings scheduled for the U.S. theatrical release of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time on December 6, 8, and 11, GKIDS will also bring it to IMAX screens on November 30. Tickets go on sale November 2.
Tumblr media
The official release date is November 29, but if you preordered Discotek's Legend of Dinosaurs & Monster Birds Blu-ray on Right Stuf, it may have arrived this week. This is the film's first HD release (Toho would never), and considering I've never even seen it in proper SD before, should be a real eye-opener.

THE BEST old F1 seasons and where to watch them
[Mega post] - [Part 2]
I want to start this 2nd part of this thread by thanking everyone who liked or reblogged my previous post. I know that It's not that much, but I started this list just for fun and seeing that some notes that I wrote in my phone receiving so much love is nice. Thanks again <3.
In this second part, as I promised, I'm focusing om the dominance of one driver or team in particular.
And last but not least, I have to aknowledge the work of my bestie @whorecedes .
She translated this list from spanish to english. So if there is a mistake, It is probably my fault, not her.
Anyways
Here is the link where you can watch al the old f1 seasons:
(I used this page and I never had a problem in case you are wondering, but another useful and great resourse is F1TV PRO. The only problem is that there are some countries where this service is not available)
Well, get in the time machine because we are going back in time.
Best F1 seasons (Pt. 2):
- 1988:
The 1988 Season showed one of the most dominant performance of a team ever, With McLaren winning almost every race of that season but one. The McLaren MP4/4 Is one of the most dominant F1 cars ever made and was drove by one of the best but conflictive duos of Formula One.
Tumblr media
The McLaren MP4/4, with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
- 1991:
Although Nigel Mansell had a great season this year too, Ayrton was a bit luckier and knew excellently how to capitalize the reliability issues that made Williams lost both championships. Ayrton won the first four races of that year, but I strongly reccomend to watch Brazil 1991. That day, he won in front of his local crowd while being stuck in sixth gear for the last laps. This video gives me the chills and just shows how passionate were brazilians about him:
youtube
- 2000 to 2004:
There are lots of explanations about how Ferrari became this dominant between 2000 to 2004. Some people blame it on the Bridgestone exclusivity with Ferrari, others in Schumachers prime. We can't forget about the excellent engineers Ferrari had those years (Ross Brawn, Mattia Binotto, James Alisson, Rory Byrne, Aldo Costa).
But IMHO, the dominance of Ferrari during this era is just a conjunction of this factors. Although in 2003 they won by a minimum margin to McLaren, watching them in 2002 and 2004 being so dominant, could explain why a lot of people of my generation love this team despite they don't win anything since 2008.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Great team and a great car = Absolute dominance.
- 2005:
This season had something similar to what I said in 1991, Fernando capitalized grear the mistakes of McLaren and the bad luck of Kimi that year. But this does'nt mean that Fernando was just lucky. He ended om the podium in 15 of 19 races
Tumblr media
I will never stop simping this livery.
2009:
Imagine you bought an F1 for 1 dollar but you discover a loophole in the new regulations of the sport and completely dominate the first half of the season. Well, this is what happened with Brawn GP, a team that won all the championships in which they participated (they competed just for one season but shh).
Tumblr media
At thhe beggining of the season, the didn't even had sponsors!
youtube
If you like stories of underdog teams dominating in their sport for one year, this video is a MUST watch
- 2011:
It was very difficult for me to choose just one of Seb's dominant seasons but stats speak for themselves. (Although I could have included 2013 here too)
Tumblr media
Look at those numbers Vettel hadd in 2011. (St: Start position / Fin: Final position)
Tumblr media
2014:
This season started the Mercedes era and the biggest dominance in the story of the sport. Just watch the first race, the epic battle of the Brocedes duo and while watching that remember this: There are rumours that say that Lewis and Nico were not pushing 100% so the FIA wont suspect that the engine was illegal (it was not).
Tumblr media
It was a great year for Daniel too.
2020:
I know this is a relatively new season but I just wanted to add a photo of the W11 because is a beast of a car.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a stunning car. The best F1 car ever made in my opinion.
Well, this is the end of this mega post, but stay tuned because I am going to start a new series of post that is interesting to learn about F1!
PD: If you want to share this list in another place you are free to do it, I don't have a problem. Spread the knowledge!

Tumblr media
So, in 2012 I was hopeful about Yuzuru moving to the Cricket Club, because I thought this training place will give him opportunity for him to have a good and secure training place with privacy. In 2012 Yuzuru has debuted a new short program, Parisienne Walkways, which was, at first, not my favourite program. I liked Etude so much, and I hoped he wouldn't be 'Americanised' too much haha. I realised quickly that I was wrong, because this new program suited him him so much - it fit him like a glove. He even got his first world record score for this program in 2012, at Skate America GP event.
The first season in the new training environment and with the new team was of course not easy. Yuzuru raised his technical level a lot by putting two quads in his free skate, a Toe-loop and the Salchow, lot of transitions as well, and he practiced skating skills a lot with Brian and Tracy. He needed to get used to everything that was new, which was understandable. He was still able to win the silver medal at GPF, and he was able to get 3 spots for Team Japan at Worlds 2013, despite struggling with injury.
However when the Olympic season came I became even more hopeful than before. Yuzuru has chosen a beautiful free skate, to the music of Nino Rota's Romeo and Juliet for the Olympic season and he kept his successful Parisienne Walkways SP. After the Grand Prix Final in 2013 where he set a new world record score in the SP and skated a near flawless FS, and he won his first GPF gold medal over rivals like Patrick Chan, I got excited that he will have a shot at the Olympic gold medal.
In the Team event in Sochi, at the Olympic Games, Yuzu skated a perfect short program. This was the only time he competed against his big role model, Plushenko, and Yuzu beat him in the SP segment in the Team event (and he also beat Patrick Chan). In the individual event, Yuzuru has again skated a flawless SP and he set a new world record. He became the first skater who scored over 100 points in the short program! What a feat it was. I remember my nice co-worker, who was a big football fan who occassionally made some bets on his teams, told me that he'd come with me to the lottery shop nearby and put some money on the men's event. I haven't done such thing before, but I gave in, and put a little money on Yuzuru's victory. Haha, I hoped I wouldn't jinx him...And then after that I rushed home to watch the free skate, which was in the evening.
Yuzuru was the best in the free skate, as well, and he won his first Olympic gold medal. As we know, he wasn't really satisfied with the long program, but others made mistakes, too, and the fact was that Yuzuru had a very strong free skate even with mistakes, since he put two triple Axels in the second half of the free skate, which was the deciding factor in the end. He also had very good spins and step sequences, so he gave his everything.
We were in a period of men's figure skating, where the technical side has improved a lot over 4 years. In 2010, it was possible to win the Olympic gold with only triple jumps, now the best skaters had two quads, and Yuzuru also had two triple Axels, which was a very demanding free skate. But not just that, he was able to skate his short program twice perfectly at the Olympics, which was fantastic. Imagine how much pressure he had at his first Olympics as Japan's No.1. skater, and he could withstand the pressure. The free skate was, in my opinion very bad schedule-wise, because the SP was just a day before the free skate, in the evening, and all skaters went to bed really late at the night, but they had to wake up early for practices and then compete in the evening in the free skate. No wonder there were more mistakes than usually. Yuzu still skated very well and he deservedly won - I was so happy for him.
At the end of the season, Yuzuru has also won the World Championships for the first time, so he became the first skater since 2002 who was able to win the GPF, the Olympics, and Worlds in a single season.
Yuzuru came to the seniors at age 15 in 2010 where he had to fight to get into the Japanese team in a really difficult field: there was Takahashi, Oda, Kozuka, Machida etc. amongst others. Yuzu then became the best Japanese skater in a few years, he constantly raised the bar, not just technically but he also improved on the components so much. In the end of the Olympic cycle, he has won the big titles and he became an Olympic champion - the first Japanese Olympic champion - at the age of 19.
Since a lot of Olympic champions decide to retire, I was happy that Yuzuru wanted to continue. He was young, and I felt the best is yet to come in his career.
So I couldn't wait what he'd show us in the next quad, and I was waiting for his new season, 2014/2015.
To be continued soon.

Do you think Eve became immortal?
No. Nothing in the text indicates she did, not even that notorious 2002 line in Volume 4's Epilogue...
"Well, we’ve gotten real generous donations from the acting head of the Genoard family for generations."
...or rather, the notorious fan translation version: "Ah, while Mr. Genoard was alive he would frequently donate money," which spawned an enduring fandom mythconeption that Dallas lived to have a change of heart (and took over from Eve as head?). The original Japanese does not indicate gender, as the official translation shows, but the 'acting heads' are probably successive (e.g. child, grandchild) than one constant person like Eve.
Do I think it is especially likely that Eve would become (a complete) immortal? No, neither by choice or by accident—though the former isn't necessarily made obvious or guaranteed by her Christian faith, while the latter isn't necessarily the more believable scenario since it and the other depend on someone creating more Grand Panacea.
That’s my answer done and sorted, no need to peek BELOW THE CUT, where I make things unnecessarily difficult for myself by asking “but, like, would she though?” (Spoiler: I still err on the side of “probably not.”)
Let us suppose she is given that choice. I think the vast majority of Christians across denominations and degree of religious education (of which Eve possesses none), would consider the question a spiritual one. However, I think your average Christian layperson on the streets of '20s-era New Jersey, if asked whether they would drink an immortality elixir that made them biologically immortal, would have no idea how to answer; they would have not conceived of immortality in this fashion. Immortality was (and is) intrinsically understood to mean life after death and rarely needed a qualifying prefix when mentioned.
Suffice it to say, Eve knows so little of her faith beyond God, angels, and an afterlife that, while I do think the choice would be spiritual in nature for her, it's not one she's theologically equipped for—let alone most people. Still: one cannot assume all Christians today would choose to reject an immortality elixir. It’s simply not true.
Eve would have to answer for herself whether if she would be "moving outside God's grace" by accepting the GP's immortality, or whether she is 'cheating' God in doing so (personally I suspect it is much harder to leave God's grace or cheat God than you'll hear some people say). If she at all believes in a soul innately tied to one's individuality, and that soul and consciousness are interlinked, would she feel trepidation over what it might mean if and other immortal devours her, her 'soul', her consciousness?
(If it is that one's soul and consciousness are detached concepts, what would happen to her soul when an immortal eats her  'consciousness'? How can one's soul know to seek God, life after death, without conscious direction? Now we are getting into the theological weeds I tried to avoid.)
Although Baccano! has more self-declared atheists or irreligious persons in its cast, problems of the self, of personal identity, of life after death, and even ‘the soul’ resurface throughout the series. Are the memories, skills, and knowledge of Immortal A, as devoured by Immortal B, constituent parts of a ‘soul’? A ‘self? Renee, who wonders where one’s bodily matter goes when devoured, believes she is the sum of her memories and thus in a form of her continuation after death (potentially comparable to the ideas of Descartes and later philosophers). Claire does not believe in God but is nonetheless preoccupied with life after inconceivable death. Do homunculi have ‘souls’? Christopher agonizes over this. Melvi challenges Ennis directly on whether she has the same personality—”’soul’, for lack of a better word” after devouring the alchemist.
Elmer, in concluding the non-existence of God, has committed to pursuing happiness on Earth in God’s absence.
Anon, I admit that Eve would be an interesting Grand Panacea candidate by dint of her overt religiousness. Unlike most of the alchemists, Eve would be choosing between two immortalities (terrestrial and spiritual), rather than immortality vs. mortality—and it is reasonable to assume that a Christian would say “terrestrial immortality is not immortality,” therefore Eve rejects the former.
Essentially, one asks, “Why would Eve, a Christian, choose to drink the Grand Panacea and delay ‘true’ eternal life?” (Or worse, depending on one’s perception of God). What reason could compel her to stay? There is one reason I could entertain, as based entirely off her characterization in Volume 4: altruistic Elmer-moding. The longer Eve is on Earth, the more Christian good she can do—can’t she? She could choose to dedicate her prolonged life on Earth in service to the Lord and in self-sacrifice to others. It is in Volume 4 that Eve achieves clarity of understanding: prayer is not enough; prayer must be followed by action, she the prayer must become a player (forgive me).
However... One can realize immortality through legacy, especially if one has a fortune—which Eve will once Nader restores hers in 1935. If she is mortal, she has succeeded in instilling the virtues of philanthropy in her successors (and tight restrictions on her estate), c.f. the philanthropic donations the Genoards have made to the New Jersey Hospital. She has ensured that her money and her descendants (?) will continue doing good in her absence, which, in a way, is most high-minded outcome of all.
Ensuring that good deeds will continue without your presence being necessary is indisputably altruistic. Eve has the fortune to achieve that where Elmer does not—hell, Elmer sort of entirely dropped pursuing universal happiness-through-wealth distribution because of Huey—so it makes a sort of sense for her to “sow the charity seeds now, reap the spiritual rewards later,” and Elmer to instead be the “secular monk wandering Earth for eternity in pursuit of terrestrial rewards.” Y’know. One takes the Johnny Appleseed legend to heart (plant seeds today for tomorrow’s orchards so that you may will over them a long shadow), the other decides to be Johnny Appleseed, but, like, forever planting individual seeds and never sticking around long enough to witness or ensure it they bear fruit and multiply.
Edit: Note that this is still toeing the line of broad religious-based speculation and character-based speculation. Unless the text goes into more specifics about Eve’s personal religious beliefs and knowledge, I am somewhat left to fall back on generalized expectations and suppositions... Though I fully admit I am likely forgetting a lot of Eve-related details that are mentioned in the books. End edit.
Edit x2: Wow, I completely forgot to entertain the idea of Eve becoming immortal for love. Right. Whoopsie. I know that there are fans who like the idea of Luck/Eve (I’m...blanking on any other common pairings for her; I’ve already given an opinion on that fan pairing in some older post), so if you or anyone else had that in mind... Would Eve become immortal for love?
I have to take the generic “general supposition” perspective here, again, because the novels shed as little insight into Eve’s desires and thoughts on romance as they do her faith. Quite possibly less. It just hasn’t come into play. With this in mind... Christians are to put God first, and so do they love and worship God above all else; to love God ‘totally’ is Christian life’s first principle.
As a Dr. Phil Brown put it, “To love God is to self sacrificially commit oneself to delight in Him, to rejoice in serving Him, to desire continually to please Him, to seek one’s happiness in Him, and to thirst day and night for a fuller enjoyment of Him.”
I could guess that Eve would be spiritually conflicted; I could guess that she might view “delaying death” on Earth for the love of a spouse as putting God second to him. She would have to ask herself if she desires the earthly pleasures in one’s spouse more than the timely eternal joy of the Father, the Son... Could she truly choose a spouse over God? Who could or would?
...Well, one can acknowledge the unique position she would be in if she married an immortal. By dying as a mortal, she would be signing up for long afterlife without the spouse who remains on Earth—and, if we are to believe she would marry a morally questionable person like Luck in the first place, which I find difficult to, Eve (with her rudimentary understanding of heaven and hell) would have no guarantee they would find each other again later. (Even Ronny has no guarantee on an afterlife, so there’s really no guarantee for her that immortals would, all the paragraphs up to now aside).
If she could manage to continue serving God in her fullest capacity while living a terrestrial immortal life on earth with an immortal spouse... Well, if she could, bully for her, but that does bring us back what was earlier said about immortal legacy beyond self. I’m already paving my own unending eternal circle here, so never mind that.
I think it would be emotionally and spiritually safer for Eve to remain mortal in this specific regard, and for her to marry another Christian? If only because when she dies she has the comfort in certainty of knowing her spouse will join her in xyz years (same in reverse).
Edit x3: You know what though, anon, this all assumes in the first place that someone manages to explain to or convince Eve that Ronny is not The Devil or any sort of demon to be associated with evil. I imagine that association would be somewhat hard to shake, even for a girl who took Isaac and Miria to be actual angels from heaven.
Back to the last two paragraphs...
Well, this got away from me. Happily, the paragraphs above the cut did actually answer the question in short order. It’s like I’m fundamentally incapable of leaving most asks “at that” or something; I didn’t...need...to expand beyond the fairly straightforward scope of the original question.
By the by, I recommend looking through the Ingersoll Lectures on Immortality as printed in the 1920s if you want some interesting (short) contemporary multi-disciplinary think-pieces on “Immortality and the Modern Mind,” “Immortality and the Present Mood,” “Selfhood and Faith in Immortality,” and the like.

Quick update! So apprently you can send pictures to the calcualtor (with Recive()) which is pretty cool, becuse if you were to use the casio basic commands to render a picture you have to set it pixel by pixel which takes bloody forever! Now the problem is the Michael Fenton doc dosen’t descibe the protocol for for it, it just says picture is one of the things the calculator may request. And on top of that I couldn’t get the calculator to send one of the pictures it has saved in memory. Like you use Receive(StoPict 1) just fine, but if you try Send(StoPict 1) or Send(RclPict 1) you get an error! So I couldn’t even get it to send me a picture so I could figure out what the protocal is. Well I did eventually get it to send me a picture kind off. Turns out if you go the link menu and set captrue to screen captrue you can now press Shit+7 and it will send data over the serial cable. You get two packets; 1)  info/metadata packet, 2) the actual data for the screen shot. The only problem is I’m not sure if this is the kind of data the calculator expects to be put into the picture memory. Anyways I started googling around to what kinds of data could be sent with Send() to see if I could send what I knew for sure could be put into the picture memory. Well this manule says only variable, lists and matrix data can be sent.
Tumblr media
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1054976/Casio-Fx-Cg20-Au.html?page=318#manual So that’s not a great start. Later a found this fourm thread with a huge gold mine for info on serial! One of the guys on the therad said has a whole website on serial comunication with casio calculators! Here’s the fourm therad by the way: https://community.casiocalc.org/topic/32-send-and-receive/ So I go to vist the site and of course the site no longer exists T_T. I shouldn’t be too surprised this thread is from 2002. Fourtuantly it’s arcived on the way back machine. God bless archive.org what would I do without you : ) And what do I find? A whole bunch of headers I didn’t even know existed. And ones that I knew about which is good becase it means the new ones should probbably work too
Tumblr media
And right there a header for colour pictrue! I don’t really need a colour picture but it is a starting place! Sadly it dosen’t include anything about the structure of the data blocks (the actual image) other than the size. Guess I’ll have to try some things! Oh here’s the link to the arcive too: https://web.archive.org/web/20040406033504fw_/http://users.pandora.be/gp/casio/index.html

I have a few different questions in my inbox that revolve around my perspective on being a teen in the 2000s. A few points weren’t relevant for me, but I’ll try to cover some other aspects here in one rambling post since this might be faster...
TECHNOLOGY:
There were no apps, filters, or presets back then. If you wanted to edit a picture, you had to sit down & actually learn how to use photoshop (I think some kids with Microsoft computers used Paint too but idk). Knowing how to use photoshop gave you a huge advantage on myspace and most likely made you popular in online forums because you could actually make icons, wallpapers, & stuff like neopets userlookup profile banners. The kinds of things that kids can do to pictures today with a single tap of a button used to take like an hour + a lot of talent. Also, photoshop didn’t used to have the kind of recurring payment nonsense that Adobe does now. You’d just go to a store, buy the software cd, install it, and then it was on your computer for good.
Selfies weren’t really a big thing until myspace... and a lot of people called them “myspace pictures” for a while if you turned the camera to face yourself lol. Gifs also didn’t have a name... I just called them “animations" at first.
Modern cell phones can replace so much stuff that I used to have to haul around... like my heavy Nokia phone, disposable camera, giant chunky video camera + its gear, a giant binder of cds plus my cd player & headphones, a notepad with pens, and maps I printed out from the internet. My friends would also bring their GPS, a portable dvd player for longer trips, and ipods... except we didn’t have a way to get the ipod to play in a car yet (in 2008-ish I got one of those cords that you could set to the frequency of whichever radio station was pure static and then you’d get to hear part of your song... but you’d have to keep changing the radio station on the cord as you drove because pretty soon another song would start to cut into yours).
I didn’t even get the type of cell phone that could have internet or apps until like 2013. I was def late to that party, but my point is that the few kids who had sidekicks in 2006 weren’t the norm. I had a basic flip phone, but don’t remember texting much until 2007. Most of my friends and I just used our phones to call our parents, and then talked on MSN or AIM on our computers (if you were fortunate enough to have one in the first place... a ton of kids at my school didn’t have internet at home).
I know that videos on youtube from 2006 look like they're "filmed on a potato" and really bad quality or whatever, but part of that low quality wasn't the fault of our video cameras!! It was really distressing how I could have a relatively decent video, try my best to get all the settings right to export it for webstreaming, and then it would look like a garbled mess by the time it finished uploading through whatever hell portal it went through while getting online. Sometimes the process of sharing & downloading video files also lowered the quality. So the quality of the original videos we recorded wasn’t quite as horrid as the final uploaded versions (cell phone videos do not apply to this... those were just atrocious period).
Our tvs were not super blurry & pixelated like the bad quality youtube videos you might see of recordings from 2006 lol. Have you ever seen a movie from 2002? It’s fine. I do remember tvs suddenly becoming REALLY clear towards the end of college, though... maybe around 2010? I don’t remember exactly when. I only remember spending a few months continually pointing out how clear the details were onscreen and being shocked that we could literally see someone’s pores. So I suppose there was some minor improvement, sure.
My random opinion: there was something nice about having fewer choices in entertainment and needing to wait to access something (I’m not saying that having the freedom to do your own thing on your own schedule these days is bad or anything... it’s just different). My high school friends and I had like 5 tv channels to pick from so then everyone watched the same exact shows at the same time because we didn’t know when the next rerun would be (although weekly TV guides that got delivered in the newspaper would list the names of each episode coming up on the schedule and I would highlight the ones I wanted to see). Some kids with cable would leave the tv on for hours in the hope that they’d see their favorite music videos show up. Now people can instantly access an endless range of entertainment on their own time, so some of the excitement that came from anticipation is lost (like even waiting for someone to return the movie you wanted to rent felt like a bigger deal than just clicking on whatever’s next in your Netflix list). I spent a lot of hours of my life waiting in fun lines for midnight Harry Potter book releases, but now I suppose you could just download an e-book right when it’s released.
There weren’t verified social media accounts back then. YFly’s main selling point was the fact that celebrities were verified (that site didn’t really take off, but Brendon still had to sign up for an account in fall 2006). Without verified social media accounts, it was often really hard to tell if someone was real. There were SO many fake accounts for any & every celebrity. I legit believed that one account on Neopets was Emma Watson simply because so many other people were convinced too. There were a lot of fake myspace & facebook accounts for Ryan Ross & Brendon Urie by late 2006, but those always seemed very obviously fake to me (even if they actually managed to spell Brendon’s name right lol). Some newer fans who didn’t know as much about the guys were definitely fooled, though, so that’s yet another place where some harmful and/or inaccurate info came from.
FASHION:
movies from the 2000s aren’t a totally accurate picture of what teens dressed like… it’s more like an adult costume designer’s interpretation.
Most kids I knew in high school just wore a lot of American Eagle, Hollister, Abercrombie, and whatever PacSun sold (like Roxy). There weren’t so many aesthetics back then. The high schools that my friends and I were familiar with (in several different states) mostly had kids who were skater, scene, emo, goth, kind of punk, the generalized preppy look that made everyone into a Laguna Beach clone, or kids who didn’t care & just wore sneakers, flared jeans, and whatever graphic unisex tshirts came with their school activities.
Emo & scene were not the same thing. A lot of scene kids would get really upset if you called them emo. Some emo kids would be offended if you thought they’d ever be scene. Also: in my experience, emo kids were bullied waaaay more than scene kids.
I spent a lot of time at malls and was really into teen fashion magazines in high school like Teen Vogue, YM, Seventeen, Cosmogirl, Teen People, Elle Girl, etc. I just want to point out that styles changed SO much while I was in middle school & high school (2000–2007) and even more when I was in college. The popcorn shirts that I was obsessed with in 7th grade were only around for a short time. Flared sleeves were in towards the start of the decade, but that didn’t last long either. The 1960s came back briefly when I was in middle school, and then the neon 80s had a short comeback a few years later (but now I’m understanding why our teachers grumbled about how we were generalizing an entire decade with the looks of one moment lol). I can’t think of a single style that could possibly represent the whole decade of the 2000s. In 2004 I desperately wanted the flared jeans that Amanda Bynes wore in What A Girl Wants, but I wouldn’t have been caught dead in them in 2008. In 6th grade my favorite outfits were track pants that could snap off, flared jeans with flowers embroidered on them, butterfly clips in my hair, those clunky chunky brown sandals that looked like turtles, the spaghetti strap tank tops that were banned at school, a little triangle bandana thing on my head, foundation as some weird form of lipgloss, and body glitter. I fit in at that point, but I would’ve looked weird by 2002. Trends were super temporary & changed quickly. It’s not like the entire decade was into camo cargo pants, trucker hats, shirts/purses/hats/anything with your initial in rhinestones, madras shorts, platform sandals, jeans that laced up the sides, pants with flares as big as you could possibly get, colored skinny jeans, denim miniskirts with cropped leggings underneath, long camisoles with a lace bottom for layering, boleros, gauchos, striped polo & rugby shirts, that one style of adidas shoes, those velvet tracksuits, massively furry uggs, crocheted purses & shirts, jeans that looked like they were patched together, suede belts with the fringe that hung down to your knee, studded belts, etnies & vans, etc. Those things were from a range of different years. 2008/09 feels like it had way more in common with 2011 than with 2005. I thought the early 2000s had more in common with the late 90s than with 2006. I’m just saying... you can’t generalize the whole decade as a continuous look or sound.
TOXIC ASPECTS OF 2000s FASHION / TEEN CULTURE:
TW: eating disorders
Maybe movies didn’t show the actual types of tshirts that teens wore because those had a giant brand name plastered on them or were inappropriate? There was SO much sexual innuendo on shirts around like 2004. I just tried to google this and I’m shocked at how there are so few examples (I put some in this tag). I mean, it’s awesome that our culture has changed enough to recognize that those should be buried, but they were also so prevalent that it feels strange to see those shirts are just gone as though they barely existed. I’m able to find some examples of Abercrombie shirts still because the brand is popular, but those types of graphic tees were at almost every store in the mall for a season… even Kohls & Target were questionable. For a short time it was such a chore to find a tshirt that didn’t subtly say something sexual, which legit made me anxious as a high school freshman. A 14-year-old girl shouldn’t be walking around in a tshirt with colorful smiling flowers that say “guaranteed to get you up in seconds!” I hate that I was so naive that I wore that shirt to school for a long time, but I also hate that those types of shirts were created for the junior’s section of some stores. The graphics on those shirts were mostly designed to look like ads for things like tropical islands, travel, Asian restaurants, cleaning products, mountain resorts, etc… except it was usually sexual in some way if you stopped to actually read the small text. Other shirts were also surprisingly racist, sexist, and just generally weird for something that was obviously created for underage girls to wear.
Parts of the teen fashion industry basically fostered a bitchy culture where girls hated each other and were striving for male validation. Most stores at the mall (and even Walmart & Target) had those popular attitude tees that pitted girls against each other or reduced our worth to a few physical characteristics. The Abercrombie t-shirt that said “I make you look fat” stands out in my memory (but it’s just one drop in the bucket of all the similar tees they sold). And there were SO many shirts at various stores about blondes vs brunettes that I remember wondering whether my friends who dyed their hair felt like they were switching sides in a battle lol (there weren’t many shirts about redheads, but I remember seeing one at a store like JC Penny or Sears that had some kind of flames & implied something sexual because of course).
There was even a weird trend of graphic tees that made fun of rural populations... like Urban Outfitters had so many shirts mocking states that were stereotypically redneck. Abercrombie and other stores did too.
I still remember a teen magazine (maybe Cosmogirl?) had an article whose condescending tone was basically congratulating Rachel Bilson in The OC for eating cheeseburgers, being ok with her body/weight, and not trying to be skinny (she was probably a size 6 btw). She was legit considered “large” by several magazines back then, whereas Marissa on The OC was the standard of what was supposed to be “normal.” The media would create a culture where you needed to be super skinny to be acceptable, but then they’d blast those same celebrities for possibly being anorexic (and that shaming wasn’t done out of concern for their health… the tone was more like celebrating that a celebrity screwed up yet again). There really was no way to win.
I recently saw a current teen talking about that Senior Year movie on Netflix and how ridiculous it was that the main cheerleader girl claimed to be on an ice cube diet (as though that idea was absurd and Netflix was inventing it as a joke). That was an actual thing, though. I even remember reading the “helpful tip” in more than 1 magazine that the act of chewing on ice cubes would trick your brain/body into feeling a bit more full. I remember a couple girls who’d have cups of ice at lunch complaining about how their dentists told them that chewing on ice cubes was bad for their teeth.
The top & middle shelves of jeans at Hollister & Abercrombie were like sizes 00-5 and then the biggest sizes were at the bottom. You had to kneel on the floor to try to find a size 9 in their limited stock, which was the biggest size some stores sold (others went up to a size 11). Way too many of my friends viewed themselves as “disgustingly obese cows” for being a size 9/10. I was legit ashamed to be a size 5/6. Our world was created through a really narrow lens of magazines & tv & movies, and we mostly saw super skinny white girls.
Another aspect of the one-way dictation of culture was how “poor people” were very much looked down on in the early 2000s. The kiosks at the malls near me were full of counterfeit designer bags, sunglasses, shoes, etc. I’m mostly speaking for the preppy crowd here, but at a lot of high schools you were basically expected to have a small Coach bag and one of those chunky chain Tiffany & Co necklaces with the heart on it. That was just like the bare minimum (and it was embarrassing for the girls who were called out for clearly having knockoff ones… like I felt safer just not having those things than being caught looking like I wanted to, while clearly not being able to afford it). I was watching this youtube video last night (which is seriously funny btw) and the guy points out how Kate calls out Lizzie for being an outfit-repeater and then the characters in that movie look down on blue collar workers and people who might live in a trailer park. That is such a solid example of what our culture felt like back then. I’m glad that those comments seem noteworthy or abnormal now, but it’s hardly like the Disney channel invented that mindset. It was just everywhere. Like I cleaned hotel rooms throughout high school to be able to afford my clothes from American Eagle & Hollister, but that was a serious source of shame (even my mom looked down on me for that job). Sometime around 2009-2011 I started to notice a shift where it started to be more acceptable to admit that you shopped at Target or used coupons, and then shopping at thrift stores became mainstream cool and people were openly talking about their budgets, financial problems, etc. Maybe this shift was partially because of the recession in like 2008, but I really do think that a more connected society via the internet weakened the media’s ability to dictate such a narrow culture as we started to get inspiration & ideas from a wide range of perspectives.
You know how in the movie 21 Jump Street there’s that scene where Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill go back to high school in like 2012 and it’s totally different? That was one of the most relatable scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie lol. Suddenly it was cool for teens to care about things or actually try in school? Admitting that you like Lord of the Rings or anything “nerdy” was no longer an actual risk that might make you lose friends or expose you to ridicule? Wtf I felt so ripped off. You’re not asking to be bullied if you wear your backpack on both shoulders?! I had been willing to give myself back problems because I thought that was the price of survival. I spent a lot of the early 2010s being cranky that the teen culture I had worked so hard to conform myself to was vanishing and being replaced with something that I would have absolutely loved in the first place, thanks.
(I’m definitely not saying that everyone who went to high school in the early or mid-2000s had the same experience I did btw. This is just my perspective).
SOME PAGES FROM TEEN MAGAZINES
Teen magazines were full of “entertainment” in the form of attacking female celebrities. That mindset definitely wasn’t limited to just teen magazines or the audience of teen girls, but I’m more shocked in hindsight by how 12-year-old girls were basically taught to judge, sabotage, and compete against each other. It seemed normal at the time, too. It fostered a culture where a lot of us were super insecure & anxious that everyone was waiting to laugh at our smallest mistake or mock our flaws. Here are some random examples of the culture we were fed in the mid-2000s.

Mark Webber insists Oscar Piastri isn't feeling any pressure on the eve of his first Australian GP
Mark Webber insists Oscar Piastri isn't feeling any pressure on the eve of his first Australian GP and 'doesn't need any advice' ahead of his Melbourne debut despite McLaren's woes By Dan Cancian For Daily Mail Australia Published: 11:06 EDT, 29 March 2023 | Updated: 11:06 EDT, 29 March 2023 Mark Webber believes Oscar Piastri doesn't need any advice ahead of his Australian Grand Prix debut, despite a difficult start to his first season in Formula 1. The 21-year-old replaced Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren after spending last season as the reserve driver for Alpine and arrives at Albert Park on the back of two challenging races. Having retired in Bahrain in the season opener due to electrical issues, Piastri finished 15th in Saudi Arabia as McLaren's struggles continued. But Webber insisted the bumpy start to his Formula 1's career would not dampen the young Melbournian's spirit ahead of his home Grand Prix.  'It’s a tremendous moment for him to race here,' Webber told News Corp. 'He’s looking forward to it, he is very relaxed.  Mark Webber believes Oscar Piastri doesn't need any advice ahead of his first Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne this weekend  The young Australian has endured a difficult start to his rookie season in Formula 1 'It’s one race of 23 on the calendar, it’s a home race, of course, but he is looking forward to getting the paddock and starting work.' Webber, who manages Piastri, finished sixth in Melbourne in his Formula 1 debut and went on to make 215 starts in the sport between 2002 and 2013. Piastri's career is in its infancy, but Webber is confident the young gun doesn't need any advice from him. 'I don’t think [he is feeling extra pressure],' he said.   'Once the helmet is on and he’s in the car and he’s driving around the track, he wants a result at every single circuit around the world, no matter if it’s Bahrain, or Saudi [Arabia] or here. 'He doesn’t need any [advice from me]. He is very much looking forward to the weekend.' A world champion in Formula 2 and Formula 3 in 2020 and 2021, Piastri has long been considered one of Formula 1's rising stars. But he was eager to keep expectations in check ahead of his debut season, warning it could time for him to get used of the demands of Formula 1 after spending last season as the reserve driver for Alpine.  His caution appears to have been justified, albeit through no fault of his own as McLaren have been badly off the pace in the first two outings. 'He has had so long out. It just shows you that it is still even hard to take now, obviously the gap that he had,' Webber added.  'So, he is getting back up to speed and learning as much as he can.'  Piastri retired in the season opener in Bahrain and finished 15th in Saudi Arabia Webber finished fifth in his Formula 1 debut in Melbourne and was allowed to stand on the podium, much to the delight of the Aussie fans Earlier this week, Alan Jones was even more bullish about Piastri's prospects and backed him to become a world champion. Since Jones claimed the world title in 1980 no other Australian has finished top of the drivers standings, but the 76-year-old is confident Piastri can emulate his triumph.  'I think he can go on to be world champion,' Jones told the Herald Sun on Saturday. 'Every now and again someone comes along that has got an enormous amount of talent and I reckon he is one of those sorts of people.' On Evolving Tastes
1989: "I know of no other games than Super Mario Bros. 1 through 3, Tetris, Doctor Mario and Mickey's Mousecapade. This will last for a few years, until my aunt will introduce me to bootleg 300-in-one cartridges. Ironically, I'll only ever touch Yie Ar Kung Fu, Macross, Mappy, Dig Dug and City Connection."
1990: "Dad's discovered that a store near his office sells Tengen cartridges for a fraction of officially-licenced titles! He gets me Gauntlet on the super cheap, thinking I'll play it once and forget about it, but Gauntlet becomes the one game I play the most often."
1996: "Man, Earthworm Jim and Myst are going to dominate this summer vacation! I might even work in some time for a few Mortal Kombat tourneys!"
1999: "I got over my giant snob self and gave Quake and Half-Life a shot. Something's shifted, for sure. I'm not sure, but I might actually like a few shooters..."
2001: "I am a grown-ass man and I cannot stop playing The Sims. Please send help, I'm nurturing an unhealthy God complex."
2002: "I'm really mad at myself for not finding out about Vampire - The Masquerade: Redemption until two years after its release."
2004: "Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines has consumed me."
2005: "Study? Yeah, sure, I do - but Unreal Tournament 2004 is where it's at - whenever Black & White 2 doesn't consume for weeks on end."
2006: "My Dad introduced me to SimCity 3000 several years too late, which is introducing me to the wacky world of PC retrogaming. I now use his beige croaker of a clerical machine to work on Isometric metropolises while snapping my fingers to some real-ass Jazz bops."
2007: "I resisted for two years, but finally caved in to Guitar Hero. It's also the best excuse I had to get a Slim PS2."
2008: "I used my paycheck from my first Real, Adult Man Job at the campus to get myself an XBOX 360 and Fable II! I'll spend years playing it while ignoring the game's obvious flaws!"
2009: "I kinda hate myself for it, but I splurged on a PS3 after a friend showed me Super Stardust HD."
2010: "Fuck you, getting myself a Wii for the express purpose of playing the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Also, ow, this exact fucking thing will also send me off to my first serious GP appointment as an adult, for a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome diagnosis. I'll spend two years wearing a wrist brace and playing through all three games in short bursts. The tendon responsible for retracting my right thumb is on permanent fire and every gameplay session puts me through a physical gauntlet, but every new gameplay component the series introduces makes me feel like a kid again."
2011: "Skyrim. Just - Skyrim. I'll perpetrate my first and only acts of professional truancy to devote entire weeks to my quest log. It helps that this winter was particularly Siberian, so I had plenty of excuses to stay home and slay dragons."
2014: "I power through Destiny on the PS3 and spend about four months being extremely hooked onto the game's universe and lore. I'll design character after character even after finishing the main quest four times, because I finally discovered what Halo stans have been enjoying for years - which is an approachable and still complex Fantasy/Sci-Fi shooter that hasn't yet lost its narrative compass...
Luckily, I also find out about Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and realize I have a thing for Uruk-Hai labelled as "The Friendly". I'll spend a year at the pace of an hour or two per day trying to populate my two camps with nothing but Friendlies."
2015: "As is usually the case, I come into this a few years too late and discover the joy that is Saints Row: The Third. GTA never grabbed me, while Volition's total lack of self-seriousness delights me. I buy Saints Row IV immediately after finishing my first run-through, and find that Volition's writing team is the only thing that keeps me going. If it weren't for JB Blanc's mouth-watering portrayal of Emperor Zinyak, I'd be playing a fun, if average third-person shooter."
2016: "Bigger job titles means more disposable income, which means my first custom-built tower PC after years of prebuilts - and a PS4! Destiny 2 and GTA 5 are big ones on there, but the first one disappoints me with how it gatekeeps the lore behind high-skill activities that are unfriendly for players with navigational or reflex-related issues (i.e. moi) and the second turns absolutely turgid at any moment that doesn't feature Trevor Philips.
Seriously, who do I have to call at Rockstar to let them know I don't give a rat's ass about Michael DeSanta's midlife hoodlum crisis?!"
2017: "Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, baby! Copy and paste my fixation from 2014, except now Friendlies are voiced by JB Blanc. Thank fuck for apartments, 'cause I wouldn't have wanted my folks to see me aggressively blush any time a Friendly crossed swords with me, claiming to want to be my pal."
2020: "Welp, guess it's nothing except slaying demons and building an island commune on my brand-new Nintendo Switch... Oh, and wouldn't you know it, Cyberpunk 2077 just came out, and in such a state that I won't seriously touch it until September 2022..."
2021: "What's happening to me? Why am I so psyched about Power Washer Simulator? Why did I spend nearly as much time in Mechanic Simulator 2021 as I did in Skyrim? Why do I persist in being hyped for House Flipper despite reports of horribly unoptimized code?"
2022: "I might as well embrace it: I have no hair on top and grow a mo' in an afternoon, I can only maintain a very mild case of fitness and there's fifteen to twenty pounds I just can't get rid of no matter how hard I try. I am a Dad, now. I have the Dad Bod - the real one, not the one perpetuated by misaligned kiddies who'd call British Pop Music starlets Daddy - and I am now oddly hyped for Construction Simulator. I've finished Cyberpunk four times, played through Elden Ring twice, and I'm at the point where I'd honestly be excited by a game that finds some way to simplify the act of grading papers.
I dream of a twist on Papers, Please where one plays as a lecturer and where the goal of the game is to grade papers while avoiding interpersonal or professional scandals, as well as meeting faculty quotas..."
