Fandoms have really worped peoples idea of what punk is.Obviously the misconceptions and straight up lies about us didn't start with them but they were definitely a huge help in spreading them due to media and the lack of comprehension of it therefore.Like i said in the caption of my recent meme that blew up,being punk is not an aesthetic but a subculture and a policitical movement with the requirements to be one of us being fighting against corruption and helping and generally being kind to minorities and if a character is just edgy without doing that,then they don't deserve to be grouped in with us when they haven't earned it

In real life,when someone goes punk,it's almost always because they're a minority and faced so much discrimation and abuse because of it that they decided to do something about it and that's how they made their decision.I'm not gonna give out details because that would be traumadumping but the reason i went from regular pastel to pastel punk is that i'm a biracial afrolatina who was raised by the white side of their family,mentally disabled because of having a bunch of disorders including autism,mspec and aspec and a former tomboy kid turned femme genderfluid and bigender transmasc.That probably gives you an idea of all i've experienced and those experiences are the reason i decided to start going punk,not because i wanted to be 'cool'.Not that that's inherently a bad reason to but it is a rather ignorant one

Like,look at the characters i used in that meme-Hobie Brown,a black teenager who was forced to grow up too fast or he wouldn't survive,Ichigo Kurosaki,an autistic boy who saw his mom die when he was only a child and was never given therapy and resorted to repressing his emotions to cope and had deal with everyone assuming he was a delinquent based off nothing but his hair color so they treated them badly because of it as far back as middle school,Katara,an indigineous girl born during a 100 year long war who saw her mom get murdered when she was only 4 and adultified and parentified for the next 10 years straight afterwards even though she has an older brother,Luz Noceda,a second gen afro-dominican inmigrant who's bi and gender nonconforming AND neurodivergent and had no friends until her series began because of it,Stephanie Brown,a girl who was emotionally and physically abused by her dad and nearly got csa'd by one of said dad's friend's which traumatized her so much she remembered all the details years later and had to take care of her mom who was a drug addict and then had to deal with a man twice her age constantly degrading her for not being his adoptive son yet calling himself her mentor

Percy Jackson,an adhd and autistic person who's abusive stepdad used their insecurities over their intellegence as insult fuel and grew up poor and getting bullied nonstop and with their teachers not only never helping them but AGREEING with their bullies that they were a bad kid and punishing them for nothing and then spending all five books of the original series having to deal with an older man who'd gaslit them into trusting them so he could kill them when they were only 12 AND literally almost every authority figure(the gods)treating them like shit including the one who's their dad that abandoned them at birth and never made up for it,Dabi Todoroki,a physically disabled man who's disabilities were caused by him trying please his dad who'd started abusing his entire family the second he didn't get what he wanted from them and has been having to deal with everyone praising him as just an anti-hero for almost a decade

They're all punks,some intentionally,some not,but the REASON they are is that they have the punk mentality and show it in their actions,not because some of them are edgy and some of them not being edgy dosen't mean they 'don't count as/can't be' punk and that was caused by their experiences as minorities,not anything else and that's not subtext,it's just text.You don't HAVE to be a minority to be punk but the characters i've seen labeled as part of us more often than not are the ones actively hurting the ones who are and that inherently means they can't be because the whole reason punk was created was to be anti-bigotry and protecting and loving opressed people

Someone who dresses in dark colors and alt accesories and goes out of their way to mistreat people who don't deserve it and are already thought of as subhuman by society isn't a punk,they're a bully and an abuser in the making and if they're an adult,then they already are one and no,them being abused dosen't justify any of that because MANY irl actual punks went through and are even still going through it but didn't have the privilige to turn into a tormenter with no consequences over it.And sorry to tell you this but if you think they are or should be instead of getting justice served on them,then you're not punk either

The thing that was so oddly... Charming? About Pierce in the beginning is that he genuinely thinks he's helping when he says and does ridiculous shit. Like when he mistakes the word tardy for the r-slur and says not to say 'that word' around Abed... Like, I feel as though he really thinks he's being a good person by saying that, but it's just so wrong on so many levels. You could say he's... Streets behind.

I feel like Annie would be more aware of the global socio-policital climate surrounding Guatemala since she's stereotyped as Type A and a classic book-smart nerd. However, it is early on in the series where everybody wasn't perfectly fleshed out, plus, there are plenty of people that are very intelligent when it comes to school and have no idea what is happening in the rest of the world.

The commentary about Israel and Palestine in Pierce's performance really stuck out to me due to everything that's going on in the world right now. (And the fact that Pierce is apparently anti-Isreal- although his reasons are definitely more anti-Semitic than actual criticisms of the government- plus, I don't think that means he's on Palestine's side either, because it's Pierce 🙄)

I just want to know how Jeff and Pierce ended up roping Annie into their presentation. Did they ask for volunteers? Did they force her into that boat? Why was there stereotypical native American iconography involved???

Also, Professor Chang uses the Italian flag, not the Mexican flag when handing out the partnered assignments

I had watched Velma (for free cause I aint helping them get views) and theres this trend I hate. That's when they make the white people idiots & always insult them. I'm black and I find that offensive. There's a way to make fun of everybody in a smart way (In Living Color is a great example) but these modern shows are just hateful or not funny or both. They just want to trigger ppl without any kind of positive message.

And I can't be mad at only the ppl who write the shows. The companies who allow it and advertisement and ones who distribute it are at fault too. And when you look at the history of propaganda, I'm pretty sure this is intentional. The United States makes money off of ravial division. This is why we dont have shows like Weekenders, Statick Shock, Doug, Hey Arnold, Xaolin Showdown, Totally Spies, Darkwing Duck, Recess, El Tigre, 6teen, original Teen Titans, Justice League, Kim Possible, The Proud Family (original not the new one), Jackie Chan Adventures, or other shows like that anymore. Those shows brought too many different ppl together. Racial division is profitable but also useful in controlling the minds of the ignorant. And behind it all is politics. One side complains about this while the other complains about that. Then both sides make a profit while controlling the masses through artificial hate.

I wish we could go back to shows that had positive portrayals of all races & both sexes. A group of friends of different races with both guys and girls just happily hanging out and dealing with everyday struggles and how to overcome them with help from your friends. Cause this modern stuff just makes everyone hate each other.

I want shows like Statick Shock where Virgil finds out that his best friend Richie has a racist dad & it upsets Richie so much that he runs away from home. And the dads of both have to work together to find Richie as Richie's dad learns he is misjudging others. And episodes later, Richie's dad is friendly with Virgil and his dad.

Or how in Teen Titans, Starfire was being called a troq by a "heroic" racist. Then Cyborg thinks its just a nickname and calls Starfire that and she gets upset. Then after Cyborg finds out, he says he can relate because he's half cyborg (subtext is that he can relate because he's black). Then all of her friends stand by her and give the cold shoulder to that guy who called her that slur. They weren't gonna put up with that.

Or even in oG SpongeBob when they say Sandy can't do stuff they can because she's a squirrel while they say "sea creatures rule!" That episodes teaches a lesson about both racism and sexism. Sandy is the only girl against a group of guys who thing they are better. Sandy is from a different group of people against a group of water people who thing they are better. Sandy thinks she's better too. Then in the end, they give the lesson that nobody is good at everything and they should value the differneces and what the other person is good at as they apologize to each other.

We peaked in the 90's and 2000's. Sadly, I think its all downhill from there now. Not just with TV shows, but with music and everything else. The good things we get nowadays are just leftovers from a better time that didn't over politicize race, sex, gender, religion, and policital leaning as they do now. Respect is lacking. All ppl want to do is trigger someone. What kind of society is that?

It's about how numb he became to everything (to the point of saying he's a nihilist) and how him and ordinary people can't understand or change a thing when it's the ruling class that's waging wars as they please.

Saying you're disenchented by the state of the world and politics IS political.

If he was aware of the conflicts in Gaza in 2019, he was already more policitized than many people who are waking up to the reality of the Palestinian struggle in 2023.

Finally, he has been writing political and social songs and it's been part of his PR talking points - he is presented as someone who talks about difficult stuff like the male suicide epidemic and not some bubble pop love song writer.

His Rolling Stone UK interview was full of references to his working class background, the tories, etc. He's been pretty vocal about his politics. From the interview:

It's hypocritical to paint yourself as an engaged artist siding with the people and remaining silent when there's a genocide going on. The scale of the atrocities should get you out of your numbness and hopelessness. He's deciding not to use his voice, even if he did it previously to call out the British government, and I'm disappointed.

Next time he writes a song about the ruling class and the way of the world and how the little people are being fucked over, I'll remember he didn't even bother to repost a story on IG when a population was being decimated.

I was just reading some of your Satsu!Verse stuff and I know it probably doesn't fit with your lineages, but I think it would be funny/sad if the less-policitally-savvy-than-his-wife Fugaku got Kotoamatsukami and less-likely-to-get-the-opportunity-to-physically-destroy-someone Mikoto got Tsukuyomi. Maybe Fugaku couldn't convince his brother to listen or something, and he died in the third war as a result, so he gets Kotoamatsukami but doesn't know how to use it effectively post-war?

re: kotoamatsukami lineage - because this is shisui's lineage, i already have it sorta mapped out -

satsuki's maternal great-grandmother had been one of the kotoamatsukami lineage head's daughters; kagami would've been her nephew, i think? and the lineage would have followed down his part of the family

in satsuverse, since the focus is mainly on the uchiha clan as a family, i gave shisui an older sister, who would've nominally been the lineage head until shisui awakened his mangekyo sharingan and became the lineage head instead

(the head of a lineage is essentially the person who last awakened a particular manifestation of the mangekyo sharingan; the 'main lineage' then follows that person's family/designated heir's line until the next mangekyo manifestation, at which point that person's family/designated heir's line becomes the main lineage

so if i had the connection as part of satsuki's paternal family instead, via fugaku, fugaku would be the kotoamatsukami lineage head since he awakened his mangekyo sharingan first, and. 😔 i like shisui as the lineage head. it follows his and itachi's 'kids who are handed more responsibility and duties than any kid should ever be made to take on and who are slowly being crushed by everything they're being made to carry' thing)

re: mikoto manifesting tsukuyomi - Okay For Real Though imagine. imagine.

in satsuverse, mikoto is the oldest daughter of a man who is both the outguard head (so the uchiha clan head to outsiders) and the head of the amaterasu lineage. her younger sister doesn't want to be the head, doesn't want to be in charge, doesn't have the ambition or the vision or the will.

mikoto does, though. mikoto is conscious of her responsibilities, of what they demand of her. she accepts this. she hones herself in accordance with this.

Season 8 (2016)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I preferred Season 7 over Season 8. I just don't care about 50% of this cast, although luckily they're the first 6 boots. The fact that there was a Double Sashay Away says it all. Naysha Lopez didn't need to be brought back either. Plus Acid and Robbie don't come across as natural villains, although Derrick definitely does. Also, this is basically just Bob's coronation season. The runways were stronger the previous year. The Shade Tree twist was a gigantic flop. Untucked was pretty boring aside from a few moments, like Naysha getting annoyed at Chi Chi. And I think Season 8 suffers from being too short - it feels like a mini-season. And it's kind of a forgettable season. On the bright side, I will say that the judging seems fairer this time. The only challenge winner I disagreed with was the Book Ball. Speaking of that Book Ball, the baby and the mama themes were whatever, but the last category had some strong looks. The challenges were better overall though, and there's some talented queens here. The "Empire" parodies were so funny. "Bitch Perfect" was one of the better Rusicals. The Snatch Game wasn't my favourite, but Bob saves it. It's also the Snatch Game where Ru got mad at the celebrity guests' answers. The Final 6 once again forces the pairs with the most drama to work together for the policital advert. We really gotta do these political challenges every 4 seasons huh? So the cast size was shrunk down because the producers needed exactly 12 more contestants to reach a series total of 100; with Derrick Barry being that 100th queen to enter the Werk Room. The premiere was also the 100th episode, so it was a milestone episode. To commemorate this, the photoshoot incoperated the previous winners, excluding Bianca who was replaced by a clown. While the first maxi-challenge was a greatest hits collection of all the past design challenges. The rollerskate runway was interesting. The Madonna runway was a notorious flop. Season 8 had some drama too. Episode 5 starts off with Bob and Derrick trying to out-read each other. The Final 5 involves an explosion between Derrick and Naomi. Thorgy becomes fixated on Bob as the season progresses. And Acid tries to undermine Chi Chi in Episode 2. But once Derrick was gone, that final 4 was so friendly with each other lol. Also, "Rectangle girls of the world" is now stuck in my head.

Queens Ranking: 12. Acid Betty Acid was too deliberate as a villain... I want reality TV conflict to at least *seem* believable. She was just a villain for the sake of being a villain. She called the previous winners "wannabe drag queens", she disliked Trixie's make-up, she said Snatch Game sucks, she talked back to the judges, and she played mind games in the singing challenge. She also fought with team leader Chi Chi in episode 2 because Chi Chi wasn't prioritizing the choreo. The funniest part was Jamal Sims saying she's a team player. But it just felt like Acid was stirring the pot because she could; while displaying this devious smirk all season and being condescending. In her final episode, she talked about being ostracized in the drag scene, but Thorgy's comments at the start of the season made it sound like she brought it on herself. Anyways, Acid was actually a contender here. Her Money Ball look was well-made, she gave all those faces in the Rusical, and her multiple personality acting in "Empire" was good. She also brought a unique acid trip aesthetic to the runway, as seen in her neon and roller girl looks. The spider headpiece one was memorable too. But then she had no jokes as Nancy Grace in Snatch Game, and that was that. 11. Naysha Lopez Should've stayed a first boot. Naysha was both bland and unhappy. In the premiere, her intro didn't tell us who she is, she whined about having to do a sewing challenge, and she talked about pageants. Her Drag on a Dime look was horrendous too, and it was the first garment she ever made. Upon her return, she initially miscast roles as a team leader. She was fine in that "Empire" sketch though. Then next episode, she came up with the shapes idea, got mad at Acid for giving an opinion on the shapes idea, and got annoyed at Chi Chi interrupting her judges critique. While in the actual performance, one of Naysha's "rectangle girls of the world" was out of sync. In the lip syncs, she did a bunch of clapping for "Applause" and a bunch of cartwheels for "Call Me"; with her wig falling off in the latter. 10. Robbie Turner I was ready to rank Robbie down here before I even knew about the Uber driver hoax. She spent the season giving these vicious remarks in confessional ("I'm gonna tell you a story about flats. No."). She also tried to come for Sh*ron during the photoshoot. But she lacked charisma to pull it off. Her drag style was inspired by old Hollywood, but none of her looks wowed me. She wore some lingerie in her entrance and she bombed both design challenges. She forgot to pick a theme for herself in the first one and in the end, her Bitch Ball look had no shape - she should've been bottom 2 for that. While her Cowardly Lion Makeover just looked like a bunch of fabric slapped together. As for the performance challenges, Robbie was up and down. She was funny in the Rusical, but her multiple personalities in "Empire" were off; despite her being an actress. Then her punk rock voice won the singing challenge, but her Diana Vreeland in Snatch Game was forgettable. She also lip synced on rollerblades; breaking a light and falling off stage in the process. While in her second lip sync, she made the game-ending mistake of taking her wig off. 9. Laila McQueen Laila's "gothy rockstar" style could've been interesting, but her storyline was that she lacked self-confidence. She basically crawled into a ball for the photoshoot. I didn't think her first runway was that bad though? And she showed fight in the first lip sync with the sexy poses on the floor and headbanging her wig around. In the next episode, she was salty about being in the bottom 2 over some other queens. So she needed to prove herself in the Rusical to stand out from the pack... which she completely failed to do. Her role was pretty forgettable. I also didn't like her green sea Movie Premiere outfit. And then her second lip sync performance didn't match the song, where she stripped down to "I Will Survive"... CRINGE.   8. Dax ExclamationPoint Much like Laila, I had hopes for Dax's cosplaying, superhero inspired looks. But she never delivered. That Hello Kitty thing looked tacky and her Movie Premiere dress was whatever. In the Rusical, Dax overthought in rehearsal and didn't practice overnight, and she wasn't even trying in the final performance. She "won" the lip sync, but her removing the yellow part of her dress and twirling it around was pointless. As if she was thinking "oh Laila did a tearaway I should do one too!" 💀 Otherwise, Dax found her confidence through drag. She was shady when commenting on Derrick's runway and shady when forgetting Laila's name. She also got upset that no one told her that her butt padding was bad! That's about all I got. 7. Cynthia Lee Fontaine "Her landmark verdict of legalizing sex" lol. I was surprised that Cynthia won Miss C since she left so early. I guess that's why they brought her back for Season 9. She had a smaller presence on Season 8 though. From the start, I got the impression that she was this high energy chatterbox that keeps saying "cucu". But then on Untucked, Bob and Naomi commented on how likeable Cynthia is, and yeah I agree she's likeable enough. Her runways weren't the most polished though. In the first episode, she glued some candy to a bodice and it looked messy at the bottom. And her basic cowgirl outfit in episode 3 was picked apart by everyone. Still, Cynthia had good energy in the Rusical... and kicked her shoe towards a ceiling light. But then she didn't understand her characterization in the "Empire" challenge. She fought in that lip synch against Robbie though. 6. Thorgy Thor She's a talented queen, she's an artist, and she was an early contender. But Thorgy kind of spiraled as the season went on. She had a very strong start - that red cake dress should've been top 3, she was a stand-out in the Rusical, and she would've 1000% won the "Empire" challenge if Bob wasn't on the season. And it was that challenge loss in particular that got to her. Thorgy was obsessed with Bob from that point on, feeling like she was playing second fiddle to her. It happened again in Snatch Game, where Thorgy threw out some dark jokes as Michael Jackson, but it wasn't enough to beat Bob. She also clashed with Bob in the singing challenge, believing that she knew what she was doing with songwriting. And towards the end, Thorgy got annoyed at Chi Chi slacking off in the Makeover, and was confident that Chi Chi and Derrick were the next to go. I think Thorgy was a little too serious and pushed the bar too high for herself. Her ultimate undoing was the political ad, where she was too scatterbrained and the end result was lacking. Otherwise, Thorgy's mother's death story was emotional. 5. Derrick Barry Delusional and oblivious. Derrick was the villain, but a cringey one at times. She thought twerking would give her soul. She gloated about Blondie wanting to take her on tour. She said "whassup" to Faith Evans. Her Laura Bell-Bundy was cringe. Her "Empire" singing was disconnected. She was proud of her floppy shoulder Makeover because it was sewn. She asked Kim Chi if she was from North or South Korea. She acted like her ugly book outfit could go in the "RuPaul museum". She drew on Tammie Brown eyebrows after being told to change them. And she thought she was named as someone who should go home tonight because the queens were threatened by her. Derrick needed to prove that she was more than just a Britney Spears impersonator, but she refused to do a style that wasn't her. She did a Britney-inspired look for the first runway, where she trimmed a crotch wreath and that somehow put her top 3. Her neon runway was Britney-esque. And she did Britney in Snatch Game, but I didn't laugh that much. Derrick also had this way of inserting herself into conversations to make herself the center of attention. She got into arguments with Bob, Chi Chi, and Naomi. Her ultimate undoing was the Book Ball, where she was the worst. My fave runway was the Madonna sleeve one. 4. Naomi Smalls Naomi was friendly and chill, with this sort-of smitten-like personality? Idk if that's the right word. She was one of the quieter presences in the cast until she got pulled into a huge fight with Derrick at the Final 5, where she tried to give Derrick a reality check. But I wouldn't call her "dry" necessarily - she threw some shade. Naomi had an interest in supermodels and knew how to sell sex on the runway. She did exactly that in her lip sync that sent Acid Betty packing. She also copied Willam by stepping out of the Pride Boat to show herself off lol. And she looked fierce in the Rusical. Naomi could construct high fashion too - the scarecrow (which 100% deserved the Makeover win) and the crumpled book (which should've won the Book Ball). I also liked her Raven-inspired runway. During the season, Naomi wanted to prove she was more versatile. That she wasn't just a model. I mean, she didn't embody Tiffany Pollard at all in Snatch Game. On the runway, Kim Chi served artistic looks with a story behind them. Her cat Hair Ball thing won the first episode. She did that whole broom/slapping routine in the Makeover. And she won the Book Ball with a flower analogy. She also had the toucan feathers on rollerblades, the face paint in neon, the mime in black-and-white, the black feathers at the top 4. And whenever there was a challenge that wasn't up Kim's alley, she still kept a good attitude and tried her best. She camped it up in the Rusical to cover up her lack of choreo (she was even falling in rehearsal). She gave a very weird performance in "Empire" (those tongue pops) since she didn't have acting experience. She was funny in Naomi's political ad, while basing her own ad around things she's discriminated for. And her Kim Jong-Un in Snatch Game was good but glossed over. 2. Bob The Drag Queen "Walk into the room purse first." The sheer amount of confidence is off the charts. Bob never took things seriously - she was having the time of her life on her favourite TV show. Right from the start, Bob walked in with the "UNT" outfit and swam on the table. She talked her way into getting the "party" song for her team. She constantly gave observations about the other queens in confessional. She got into conflicts with Thorgy, Derrick, and even Luciane Piane at one point; where she didn't understand Luciane's notes and insulted Lorde. She gave a fun lip sync at the Final 5. And Bob hogged the spotlight in every comedy challenge. Her "Empire" performance might just be the funniest thing in Drag Race herstory; that's when her winner's edit came alive. She did two characters in Snatch Game. And the humour in her political ad was well-delivered; she also a goofball in Derrick's ad. As the season went on, the other queens wanted Bob to fail. She did stumble... in rollerblades. And in the design challenges. Well, the curtain one was good, but the Makeover was rushed, and the Book Ball outfit didn't use books. The power suit was also meh. My fave runway of hers is the black-and-white joker. Otherwise, she had an emotional moment about his mom. 1. Chi Chi DeVayne (RIP) The Lip Sync Assassin of Season 8. She gave EVERYTHING she had in both of them; between the stunts in "Call Me" and the intensity of "And I Am Telling...", culminating in that bead explosion. Chi Chi brought charm. She was genuine. She was the type to say whatever was on her mind. She'd read a queen with a smile on her face. She was a "broke queen" who survived gangs. She even wore garbage bags in her entrance. Throughout the season, Chi Chi had to learn to not let her lack of funds be an obstacle on the runway. Michelle gave her advice in a touching moment. Chi Chi was also ashamed of where she came from and how she talked. But there was nothing to be ashamed of! In the challenges, she was the star of the Rusical thanks to the upside down lip syncing. Her Eartha Kitt cat jokes in Snatch Game were so weird that it worked. Her political ad had jokes, even if she was too soft on Thorgy. Her Bob puppet was hilarious. And she proved she could deliver a great runway with the shredded book look. Her Top 4 outfit was pretty too. Chi Chi's roughest moment was the singing challenge, where she distanced herself in the Werk Room, her team wasn't crazy about her shape costumes idea, and her/Naysha gave a messy performance. Being a close part of the brunette‘s life had always been more than a blessing to you than anything. Running into her happened so randomly and for the longest time, you used to believe that there was a meaning to all of it. Fate or moreover the universe letting the pieces fall into place and responsible for the two of you meeting at such an unexpected time.

Without a doubt, Ally was your rock, the person you turned to and wanted nothing more than to be around. Whenever there was good news, job related ones or personal ones, you wanted to turn to her. You wanted to call or tell her in person in that moment and nothing else mattered. And you did, you would always tell her, either in person, recieving the biggest hug for the amazing news you shared or getting the biggest smile on a face time call when she wasn‘t available in person.

This would happen often, either you being away work related or Ally being across the country for her political career. But you adored it, sharing news with each other and exchanging the biggest smiles and proudest glances. Just like the good moments, you also supported each other through the bad ones, fighting each other‘s battles, crying alongside each other when the world was getting a little harder to handle than usual. Without a doubt you two were soulmates in a way, the tenderness in your hearts somehow connected as you could always tell what the other person felt and wanted to say but the lumps in your throats making that impossible.

Ally was always the person you thought of when thinking of home, she was your eyes when the tears were streaming down your cheeks and making your vision blurry. She was your voice, speaking up for you when you couldn‘t and she took your hand, keeping you going when life made it impossible to take any more steps. You used to believe it was just a connection, of course stronger than any you had ever had but you never really read into it too much.

The two of you got to spend time together throughout the year, some months when you would visit the Mayfair-Richard‘s a lot, playing and sometimes even babysitting Oz. Often visiting the restaurant and supporting them there when the months became tough. Eventually you would support Ally in her policitical career, especially at the beginning. A lot of things used to be uncertain then, like whether Ally was even going to make it, running for the first time.

However, you were always by her side, you always had faith in her, even when the people around her didn‘t. Doubted her and caused her to doubt herself. Out of all the things regarding the brunette, the thing you hated the most was certainly having to make her believe and see. Believe in herself and her abilities and see herself for the person she truly was and what she represented. To you, Ally had always been a strong person, a role model and person to look up to, leading by example and you hated anyone making her believe she was anything different.

You gave her confidence, a reason to keep fighting, whether it was some nasty comments people said or wrote about her, the opponents trying to intimidate her. Ally could do it, the same confident look on her face, leaving every single rally with more votes, more people that believed in her and you realized and noticed that eventually, she started believing in herself again, the confident look on her face not forced or acted but actually the truth as her work both in politics but also the restaurant started paying off and getting the recognition she deserved.

In your eyes, Ally was everything and she certainly deserved the world. Nothing was ever too much for you, waking up in the middle of the night when she was having a layover or at some rally in a different time zone, looking after Oz when she and Ivy had to take care of the restaurant or wanted to enjoy a nice and quiet night together. For the longest time you never saw an issue, you would have done absolutely anything for the woman you had met years ago and that so quickly became part of your life.

You had always been the supporting kind, wanting nothing more than for people to be happy and helping them get there. You would dry Ally‘s tears and listen to her troubles while your own rested so heavily on your shoulders and robbed you of any kind of sleep and keeping you awake at night. You would have happily given her your meal if it meant starving, jacket if it meant freezing and life even if it meant dying. You would have done anything to keep her and her family safe, thinking you were a little part of her family and world.

Somewhere along the lines, something had changed and you realized. Suddenly, things started to fall into place and despite confusing you at first, you finally realized what it all meant and why you felt the things you did. Like the times, people would ask you how you and Ally had met and you could talk about her for hours on end, talking about her achievements and what a great and kind person she was. The times you would often be mistaken for a couple when you two were outside and doing things together like grabbing coffee, only for Ally to correct the person who was unaware of her marriage and while she laughed it off, there was a bitter taste left behind.

It took you a long time, many sleepless nights to finally figure out what it meant, the bitter taste and feeling leaving you so hurt and sad sometimes. Now Ally was your soulmate, the person that managed to make you feel things but what you never truly realized was that she couldn‘t possibly be your soulmate in return, as somebody else had already managed to capture her heart, make her smile and be the matching puzzle piece of her life. Ivy. Now you hadn‘t always been fond of her, of course you were supportive given the circumstances but there was always something off, the same bitter feeling.

And after a long time you realized it was jealousy. She was the one comforting Ally after a long day, she was the one cooking her a nice meal and enjoying some wine and movies and quality family time with Oz and fun activities on the weekend. not you. As much as you tried to play along, pretend that you were happy for her, pretend that she wasn‘t the person you think of when someone mentions home or her arms being the only safe feeling you had ever truly felt, it was fake. Now this didn‘t just come to you naturally, it took a while to figure out and maybe the most painful part of your journey with Ally was reality‘s wake up call.

Just like when the universe decided to unite you two and bring you together, it played an essential part in the end of your journey. It was like a slap in the face, reality reminding you that you were only hurting yourself by clinging onto the idea of Ally, missing her so terribly while she was away or as soon as the coffee dates, or catching up in the restaurant or even just coming over to chat was over again. It killed you inside and while Ally was always a very open person with you, confronting when she noticed a slight change and only ever really caring about your wellbeing, you couldn‘t possibly tell her or talk with her about it.

Now, you had always been a selfless person, happily helping other‘s heal and move on, quite literally taking the plasters or bandages of your own wounds, battered and bruised heart and tender mind and putting it onto others, including Ally. You never cared, as you would have happily protected her of anything the world might throw at her, whether it was small things like worrying about something or her actually getting hurt. Nothing was too much for you and while some might believe this was an incredibly kind feature and part of your personality, it killed you, slowly left you dying inside.

There was hope of course, the secret daydreams about her or wondering what it would be like to experience things with Ally like when you saw this movie alone or when you went on adventures, wondering what it would be like to have her along. And for a while it was nice, while it lasted, the little daydreams making you smile and causing for your stomach to errupt with butterflies. However, it all fell apart, quickly changed and finally you realized, she couldn’t feel the same way back, couldn‘t love you back and couldn‘t fall for a heart like yours.

The realisation hit you eventually, after everything just started making sense, like the times you would see a color and instantly think of her, the times you would hear lyric’s and think of her and the times she would be occupying your mind for way longer than she should. After all she had found her soulmate, the person that takes care of her and nothing you, nor the universe could do would ever change that fact.

„Sweetheart, are you alright? you have been so distant lately?“ you remembered her saying over the phone one night as you stood outside on your balcony, inhaling the smoke from a cigarette and hoping it would numb the feelings, despite it breaking your heart.

„Yeah I‘m fine, just busy“ you recall your own reply and sometimes you wonder what could have changed if you were honest. If you weren‘t so foolish and pushed her away. If you could have stayed part of her and their life even if it meant, killing you inside a little everyday, would it have been worth it?

As you stand by your balcony once again, a few months later, now the same rainy atmosphere and small droplets patting against the windows, same hope for the cigarette to numb the feelings, you realize it wasn‘t worth it. Despite not speaking for months, eventually the phone calls and meeting with each other dying down, you still feel the same as her face lights up on your tv screen, shining brightly through your apartment and reflecting in the window you are standing infront of. It still hurts. The same painfull dull feeling in your heart and your throat closing up as tears threatened to spill.

She was worth it, worth it all, even the heartache as you once again realize, even if she wasn‘t meant to be your soulmate, she made your life brighter, the days worth living and the dark and lonely nights worth fighting. And as you exhale the smoke from your cigarette, you wonder, whether it was worth making the selfish decision of letting her go. But even after all this time, you still wonder whether a heart like hers, could ever love yours in return.

So You Want to Talk about Critical Race Theory

The Trump administration has instructed federal agencies to end racial sensitivity trainings that address topics like white privilege and critical race theory, calling them "divisive, anti-American propaganda." Let's talk.

Critical Race Theory, or CRT, is a theoretical and interpretive mode that examines the appearance of race and racism across dominant cultural modes of expression. In adopting this approach, CRT scholars attempt to understand how victims of systemic racism are affected by cultural perceptions of race and how they are able to represent themselves to coujnter prejudice. CRT originated among legal scholars such as Derrick Bell, Kimberle Crenshaw, and Richard Delgado, who arbued that racism and white supremacy are engrained in the fabric of American society.

CRT identifies that the power structures in this country are based on white privilege and white supremacy, whcih perpetuates the marginalization of people of color. There are five major components or tenets of CRT: 1. The notion that racism is ordinary and not aberrational 2. Tbe idea of an interest convergence 3. The social construction of race 4. The idea of storytelling and ounter-storytelling 5. The notion that whites have actually been recipients of civil rights legislation

"Color-blindness" & "Meritocracy" Color-blindness and meritocratic rhetoric serve two primary functions: 1. They allow white people to feel consciously irresponsible for the hardships people of color face and encounter daily 2. They also maintain white people's power & strongholds within society. "Color-blindness: legitimizes racism's need for an 'other' in order to flourish and maintain its influence within the fabric of society. 'Meritocracy' allows the empowered--the status quo--to feel 'good' and have a clear conscience." 

Interest Convergence: Interest convergence is the notion that white people will allow and support racial justice & progress to the extent that there is something positive in it for them, or a 'convergence' between the interests of whites and BIPOC. Derrick Bell wrote that the interests of Black civil rights coincided for a brief time with the interests of white elites, thus enabling a decision that benefited the interests of Black people. In Bell's (1980) words, "the interests of Blacks in achieving racial equality will be accommodated ony when it converges with the interests of whites." *Interest convergence is a theory coined by the late Derrick Bell, law professor and spiritual godfather to the field of study known as critical theory.

Race as a social construct The declaration that "race is a social construct" has been one of CRT's hallmark mantras and core issues. Instances of socially constructing race throughout modern U.S. history include: The infamous Dred Scott v. Sandford case whereby the U.S. Supreme Court declared that "Negroes," whether free or enslaved, were not citizens. The infamous "one drop rule," a relic from the Jim Crow era where one drop of black blood made an individual "black." How in 1935 minorities were denied Social Security and excluded from unions.

"Counter-storytelling" Critical race theorists argue that counter-storytelling, as a method of telling the stories of those people whose experiences are not often told may be a useful mechanism to challenge and change racial dominance. Counter-stories can help promote social justice by putting a human face to the experiences of often-marginalized groups. This promotes their sense of social, policital and cultural cohension and teaches others about their social realities.

White people have actually been recipients of civil rights legislation. White people have undeniably been the recipients of civil rights legislation and it has also been verified that affirmative action, too, best serves white people. As Sally Kohn wrote for Time: "While people of color, individually and as groups, have been helped by affirmative action in the susequent years, data and studies suggest women--white women in particular--have benefited disproportionately. According to one study, 6 million women, the majority of whom were white, had jobs they wouldn't have otherwise held but for affirmative action."

Unlike some academic disciplines, critical race theory contains an activist dimension. It not only tries to understand our social situation, but to change it; it sets out not only to ascertain how society organizes itself along racial lines and hierarchies, but to transformm it for the better.
