at first, sam thought it was just a coincidence. cas walking out of dean’s room, fiddling with his tie as he left. the angel almost bumped into sam as he made his way towards the library, and there was a hint of a flush on cas’ face as he said hello before he quickly disappeared.
sam watched cas as he walked away, filing the information away for later.
but it happened again and again and again. sam often caught cas sneaking out of dean’s room, adjusting his tie or fixing his trenchcoat. and it didn’t take long for sam to put two and two together.
dean and cas were sleeping together.
they had to be. although why the need for the secrecy, sam didn’t know. it wasn’t like he was oblivious to the looks the two of them had been giving each other for years now. in fact, sam was damn glad they’d finally done something about it, because the incessant pining had become unbearable.
so when a case came up that needed a gay couple to go undercover, sam immediately pushed the computer towards dean. “you and cas can handle this, right?”
dean looked down at the computer, slightly horrified, before he darted his eyes up to sam in a panic. “why would cas and I handle this? what would possibly make us fit for this job? you and cas could easily handle this one, too.”
just then, cas walked into the room, hands full with a mug of tea for himself and a cup of coffee for dean; which he placed conveniently into dean’s hand before settling down next to him. “I heard my name. what’s going on?”
sam cocked his head, gesturing at the laptop with his thumb. “I thought you and dean could handle this one,” sam said.
cas looked at the screen and froze, his eyes darting nervously towards dean before a flush creeped along his cheeks. “why? I’m sure dean doesn’t want to do a case like that with me.”
“what?” sam asked, darting his eyes back and forth between dean and cas in confusion.
dean picked up his cup of coffee; mostly as a distraction.
“why wouldn’t you? since the two of you are already sleeping together,” sam stated.
there was a sharp cough before dean choked on his coffee. taking a few rattling breaths, dean managed to gasp out, “we’re what?”
“sleeping together. cmon, it’s obvious. I’ve known for weeks,” sam said, giving dean a look that clearly said that dean was the crazy one here.
“cas and i… we’re not… we haven’t… we’ve never…”
“we’re not together,” cas mumbled, darting his eyes down to his mug of tea.
“you’re not?” sam asked.
dean shook his head rapidly, even though his eyes darted over to cas and lingered.
“then why is cas always sneaking out of your room and fixing his clothes?” sam said in surprise.
cas looked up, meeting dean’s eyes. “we watch movies together in dean’s room, usually on his bed. I guess I hadn’t realized I was fixing my clothes after I left…”
dean coughed, tearing his eyes away from cas. “it’s just movie night. not like cas wants more anyway,” dean said, mumbling the last part into his coffee.
cas swiveled around, looking at dean with a sharp look of surprise… and hope. “you want more?” he whispered.
dean slowly moved his eyes away from the coffee and towards cas, giving him a small shrug. “maybe I do.”
“maybe I do, too,” cas replied, leaning closer into dean’s space.
“oh for the love of god. so you two aren’t sleeping together?” sam asked, looking back and forth between his dumbass brother and their ridiculous best friend.
“we aren’t…” cas started to say, even as his eyes flickered down to linger on dean’s mouth.
“but we are now,” dean finished the sentence, closing the gap to kiss cas.
sam sighed, pushing away from the table as dean’s hands found their way to cas’ tie. if sam thought cas had looked rumpled before, he certainly didn’t want to wait and see how disheveled cas would look now that he and dean were actually together.

“I tried to kiss him,” Dean gasped out, tugging on his hair and pacing back and forth across the motel carpet until there was a line in the carpet where his feet had trodden too many times. “I tried to kiss him. Shit. I tried to- I almost kissed him.”
“So why didn’t you?” Sam asked, finally speaking up after watching Dean pacing like a caged animal; only talking when he thought it was safe to speak without being murded by his brother.
Dean spun around, eyes blazing as he shot Sam a sharp look. “What part of ‘Cas is my best friend’ isn’t sinking in, Sam?” Dean snapped. “What the hell did I do that for?” Dean resumed his pacing. “God. He was right there. I couldn’t… I shouldn’t have been… but if I’d just… I could’ve actually… I tried to kiss him.”
Sam grabbed one of the books from the bed and hurled it at Dean as hard as he could. “Get your head out of your ass, Dean.”
“Ow! The Hell was that for?”
Sam dropped his head into his hands, muttering something that sounded like “bitch of a brother” before he was staring at Dean with a withering look. “Go back out there, and kiss him!”
“Why?” Dean asked, aghast. “Wasn’t one failed attempt enough damage for the rest of time?”
Sam gestured wildly at the door. “Then don’t fuck it up this time! Go out there, grab him, and kiss him. For the love of God, Dean. Don’t just attempt it. Actually do it.” Getting up from the bed, Sam shoved his brother towards the door. “If I have to watch this painful pining between the two of you any longer I’m going to lose it. Kiss him already.”
With that, Sam yanked open the door and pushed Dean outside, where Cas was also pacing back and forth next to the Impala. The same place Dean had leaned in and tried to kiss Cas less than an hour ago after a successful hunt that had them all on an adrenaline high; laughing and happy with the sun setting behind them and chocolate bars of victory in their hands.
Slamming the door shut, Sam dropped back down on the bed and resumed his reading on a book of spells that Rowena had given him a few weeks ago.
Twenty minutes later, the door opened and Cas walked in, followed very closely by Dean, who had a hand on the small of Cas’ back.
“Well?” Sam asked, looking up from his book.
“Dean kissed me,” Cas replied, soft and happy and completely dazed as he looked at Dean with stars in his eyes.
Dean beamed at the angel, leaning in to kiss him all over again. “Cas kissed me back.”
