Resident Evil x My Hero Academia
Leon S. Kennedy & Albert Wesker Edition.
Leon S. Kennedy
I imagine him having a light quirk, able to manipulate it, create "flashbangs" and whips out of lights. And more things.
He'd be the sweetheart of his class, one that everyone loves.
I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in class 1A.
But would it be at the same time as Midoriya and the others, or would he be around Aizawa's age or in between? (Changes depending which RE we'd use for him.)
Anyways, he'd be popular with the people and heroes for his power, his golden heart and also of course, his appearance.
And yes, he would be a hero/someone that came from the States and ended up living in Japan, where the *ahem* greatest *ahem* heroes are.
He would be the hero that mainly works on fighting against that underground group of terrorists named Umbrella.
-
If he ever were to be quirkless instead, Id see him as that hard working officer that every Pro Heroes love and encourage. He'd be the "quirkless" person that people can't shit on since he does such a good job.
He'd love when he can work with heroes since he'd "secretly" admire them.
Wouldn't be surprised if he had heroes merchs and ended up having a couples of Deku, Shoto, and Dynamight's. And more new heroes's.
He wouldnt be for the "you have a quirk, you're better" kind of hierarchy there is and would try his best to change people's mind about quirkless and lower gifted quirk people.
Albert Wesker
This man, the secret head of the terrorist group Umbrella, a cruel and genius man.
He is already trouble on his own, so when he learns of All for One, at first he isnt sure of he should see him as a rival, another pion or an ally. He does seem strong, smart and reliable in multiple ways that Wesker like.
So when he first contact him and they end up joining hands, the chaos started. Who do you think helped the Doctor and All-for-One create those monsters? Yes, it was Him.
He never was in the spotlight, just like Shigaraki(AfO). But unlike that man, he never showed himself to the world, to the heroes and worked through other people, pions.
He injected himself with a virus mixed with a quirk and thats how he got his ability now.
Uses virus and mutated quirks as his weapons instead of just viruses.
He also is the one who actually started those syringes who increases people's quirks and decreases their judgments turning them into some more wild, strong people.
It would be a lie to say he doesn't love the chaos he creates or sees, it is something he quite enjoy it, it's entertaining.
Even when he partnered up with All-for-One, he knew that this was only temporary. He always has prefered working alone, especially if the other is also a very smart man, just like him.
#We really need to think more about this.

Curious Tides Book Review
Tumblr media
Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle Book Review
This book has so many things to love.
Too bad I disliked almost all of them because of other glaring issues in the book.
I still give Lacelle so much credit. Her book had so many dreams (literally) and tried to tackle so much for a debut YA novel. However, I really think she could have benefited from a more succinct editor, by changing up her timeline, and by shearing off a good 200 pages or so.
This book’s plot is ambitious. It switches POV’s between two main characters: Emory and Baz. Emory, a student at Aldryn College, specializes in healing powers. Used to being mediocre and constantly standing in the shadows of her best friend, Romie, Emory is suddenly the recipient of every power after a near death experience that leaves several dead, including Romie.
However, in the aftermath of the event, Emory learns that she’s a mythical tidecaller. Baz meanwhile, is an eclipse-born, a person who receives his powers from being born on a lunar eclipse.
Known for their horrific and “evil” powers that combust in an event called “collapsing”, Baz is ostracized and alienated by the other students at Aldryn, but also the world at large for his incredible, but frightening ability to control time (another big issue that I won’t even get into).
The setting of this book is a world based on the idea that people receive abilities depending on the moon they were born under. There’s lore galore, colleges dedicated to honing special abilities, rituals, language, and mythology–all based on the tides and the moon.
The details that Lacelle includes in this is really interesting, as is the concept of magic based on the moon phases itself. A dark academia setting based on the tides and lunar alignments? I love it.
However, the magic system was needlessly complicated and Lacelle spent way too much time describing events, world-building facets, and societal elements that had nothing to do with the plot and only succeeded in making the book longer instead of pulling me into the story more deeply.
In addition, a lot of Lacelle’s writing was incredibly repetitive. She hit the same points over and over and over again: eclipse-born are evil and everyone hates them, everyone loves the moon, Kieran is hot, Romie is great, Baz’s memory of his father’s printing press blowing up, Emory feeling inadequate compared to Romie, and Baz thinking or describing the children’s book Sorrow of the Drowned Gods.
No joke, the items I listed up above were about 75% of the book. The remaining 25% was action, too-in depth details about the college that didn’t matter—like what all the different halls were called and what they looked like in each dormitory, more flashbacks of Emory and Baz’s past, and interactions between the characters.
Even though Emory and Baz are at a college, their classes don’t matter whatsoever. Honestly, I have no idea why they’re even at a college other than to have them all in one place. Emory’s classes are described once, briefly, and we see her go to about two classes. Otherwise, it’s not mentioned at all.
The characters themselves were okay. Not great. Just…okay. Lacelle tried way, way too hard to give her characters depth, but only succeeded in telling instead of showing.
Instead of me figuring something out about Emory, Lacelle would have a huge, descriptive paragraph of Emory realizing that she compared herself to Romie too much and that she had her own self-worth. Moments like this aren’t bad per se, but they were way too frequent for my liking.
Let me, the reader, figure things out about the characters and come to my own conclusions. Don’t spell out every single detail for me and hold my hand. It’s tedious and it’s boring. Lacelle did this constantly.
In addition, for a nearly 600-paged book, about four characters mattered: Emory, Baz, Kieran, and Kai. Emory and Baz are the main characters so it’s hard to discount them, even though they’re not that interesting due to having every single personality trait of theirs spelled out and analyzed by the author itself.
Kieran and Kai, although important characters, were very one-dimensional. Kieran’s power-obsessed manipulative personality was not a secret whatsoever.
Lacelle reveals his “true” nature at the climactic end, even though the signs showing his megalomania were painfully clear to a ten-year-old.
I liked Kai the most, but he’s in very little of the book. We see him mainly in flashbacks and then at the very end. Lacelle, why lock up your most interesting characters and hide them away for most of the novel?? She does this with Romie too, a more egregious error.
Romie dying is the catalyst for this whole story. It’s what changes Emory and makes her a tidecaller, it’s what invigorates Kieran and sets him on his master plan, it’s what influences Kai to collapse—the whole story starts with Romie dying at Doveremere Cave.
Yet…Lacelle starts the story after this event. Why would an author do this??? It’s excruciating. Your most important part of the whole novel isn’t even included in the novel. She inserts it later as a flashback, but I don’t want a flashback. I want the real thing.
The book should have started with Romie and Emory going to Dovermere and then
progress from there. It easily could have been the first chapter and it would have introduced us to Romie’s character more, set up Romie and Emory’s friendship, and acted as the catalyst for the whole story.
Even better, it could have even started with Baz’s memory of his father’s printing press blowing up, then the three of them starting at Aldryn, them going to Dovermere, Romie dying, and thennnnn continuing.
That already would have been a better book. It wouldn’t even have to be longer. By cutting out all the repetitive and useless bits that I already mentioned, Lacelle would have had plenty of room to include these essential moments.
I truly don’t understand the choices she (or her editor) made about the plot timeline and pacing because they were all terrible.
This is a true injustice when you take into account how original and fascinating the initial concept is and how much time and effort she put into the world and its lore.
Recommendation: This book had all the right ingredients for something truly great, but fell short due to verbose, albeit beautiful writing, a slow plot, choppy pacing, predictable characters, and too dense world-building that added nothing to the story.
If you want dark academia, look elsewhere like If We Were Villains or the Atlas Paradox. These stories have much better plots with much more interesting characters and it doesn’t take 600 pages to get to the end.
Score: 4/10

It was an interesting read. :) I know very little of the full DC universe, but yeah, you're totally right about that superman and batman thing. it's why Batman is my favorite hero from there. He shows you don't really need a fancy power to be one.
Right?!
It’s one of the main reasons why I like batman so much. I used to really hate Superman growing up and I never really knew why until later. It was cuz it bugged me how he’d always act like he was the know it all on justice, and viewed people with powers or groups or certain actions that didn’t fit his worldview as the bad thing that meant that person was bad.
Superman didn’t really get the black and white, and much like All Might, a lot of that gray is about discrimination. For a lot of small time criminals, they get to where they are because lack of education, money, support, etc. Batman knows this, understands it, makes charities as Bruce Wayne to support people like that. Superman might know but not understand. He’s also not rich so sure he might not be able to solve it really, but he’s still a daylight/spotlight hero. No one would expect Batman to do a press conference on discrimination, but that’s something Superman has the power (and responsibility) to do. It’s what Bruce Wayne does.
This discrimination is a lot like in My Hero Academia. Bad quirks are seen as villainous. Take Hawks and Miruko versus Spinner for example. All three are mutant/body changing quirks based on animals. However the only difference is that Hawks and Mirukos quirks are able to be fetishized by the public/media. Spinners Lizard mutations are seen as gross and momsterous, leading him to a life of crime because of the discrimination he got from kids, adults, when looking for a job, etc.
Miruko being a bunny quirk also had the added stereotype of being weak, meek, shy, etc. She feared getting stuck with those labels and made herself work to be seen and act differently to become a strong powerful hero. But her costume still shows her femininity, people still underestimate her, she’s not overly valued as a hero because she’s not seen as stronger than most of the top ten men heroes, etc.
Same could be said for Shinsou. Evil-stereotyped quirks get certain treatments and can lead to less choices in life for jobs, friends, etc. Stuff like that All Might isn’t aware of and won’t think to advertise or fundraise for.
It’s also the same for people with ‘good’ quirks. How many people do you think were chosen for a job specifically for their quirk? Like lie detector Tsukauchi. Was he pressured into police work? Could you imagine him being a chef or something else? It’s the same with heroes and villains. Could you imagine someone with shigarakis quirk running a coffee shop? Probably not and that’s the problem. Quirks are valued and that makes people valued differently.
Bakugo too is seen as a heroic quirk, but could also easily be spun as a villainous one. Depending on how he was raised and how/where he grew up, he could have been a hero or a villain. It was speculated that bakugos parents are middle class, maybe a bit richer. What do you think would have happened if Bakugo was poor? If he went to a school district in a different area? If they saw him as a thug instead of a hero. You think he would have been able to keep his snappy personality? Or would he be forced to keep his head down so no one would feel threatened and call the police on him?
There’s so many different layers to quirks and quirk discrimination that All Might and Superman type heroes are generally unaware of. You can see this with Iron man and the xmen. Iron man in the mcu wants the Accords, that have restrictions on mutants and want mutants to be documented. He, as a person without powers, doesn’t understand how this would affect the lives of people like Peter or Wanda (which is one big arguement I would have for having peter on team iron man but he’s also a gullible kid here so I’ll let it slide) and often in xmen comics the accords screw over many many mutants. (Prime example is Cloud 9) Xmen also have issues though. Take a look at Charles Xavier, who, in many comics and even shows like xmen evolution, puts much more time and effort into helping the mutants who could pass as normal humans or come from good backgrounds or have useful powers.
Take xmen evolution, where Charles doesnt put effort into helping the brotherhood as much as he could have. He doesn’t spend time helping the kids with problems that parents would, instead focusing on training and etc. Many xmen leave because they’re not receiving the help they need. Mutants like nightcrawler, beast, toad, etc. are often overlooked because they don’t have ‘cool’ powers. This can also be said for hulk. These type of powers are seen as less or worse or evil, etc.
In one spiderman cartoon, peter starts mutating uncontrollably into a giant spider. Xmen who look perfectly normal are like you should accept yourself for who you are, sorry we can’t help you. Meanwhile Beast knows exactly what Peter is going through and helps him in a way that actually matters, in a way that he needs. So. It shows that even within marginalized groups there’s different groups or levels within that can be at odds.
It also shows a lot of parallels to real life struggles with poc, lgbt, disabled, neurodivergent, and women’s rights, etc. in the LGBT community there’s many parallels to xmen and the TYPE of sexuality/gender you are. Gay people are discriminated against yes but they can and do often exclude trans people or people of more specific (or less marketable, etc) sexualities or people of color or disabled people within that community. Just like Xmen and certain good or bad powers. Or quirks and the discrimination surrounding that.
I think mutants or quirks in general that have a visible outward appearance are particularly interesting in this case. Media and society play a huge part in whether or not certain people are socially acceptable/good/bad. Back to the point about Spinner versus Hawks. Hawks and Miruko are fetishized by the media, hero society, etc. You don’t see Ryuku(I forgot her name but the dragon lady in MHA) who can turn into a full on dragon, being marketed the same way. Spinner and Gang Orca (I’m talking about in the anime not in real life, shush) are not being fetishized by the media or heroes, were bullied in much the same ways and are seen as scary. Ectoplasm too. You also don’t see them closer to the top ten heroes rank. You don’t see them much in the show either.
Even in Class 1-A, you see clearly what is being valued when you look at the main characters. What are their quirks? Ah yeah strong ones, right. But do they have anything that would allude to them not having a normal physical appearance? Nope. Tsuyu occasionally because while she is frog she can be marketed as sexy and cute to the public. Mina is harder to do than Tsuyu but still can be marketed as cute ‘despite’ her eyes, skin, horns, etc. You know who won’t be marketed like that? Tokoyami and Shoji and Kouda. You hardly ever see them in the anime either. Not main character material. Not classified as cute, etc. harder for business students to market them as heroes, seen as not as strong, etc. I guarantee the writers coulda made tokoyami a powerhouse, could have done so much with Mina’s acid or Kouda controlling animals.
So not only is it shown in anime, it’s also marketed that way to the viewers who prefer the cute boys, etc., it’s not as popular a show if the mcs aren’t cute. Same with MCU and DC movies. Justice league movie? Great but let’s take out hawkwoman and Martian manhunter. Only sexy men and one woman allowed. Avengers? Great but let’s focus on the ones without discrimination and limit parts with Bruce Banner and get villains that are aliens and very clearly ‘other’.
One movie that was great with this was guardians of the galaxy in that they had clear differences physically and not in a sexy alien fetish way. I liked that, that they were a ragtag group of very very different people and still made a family. (Leaving out the latest love and thunder movie tho) But in that show it was clear to see that the main characters were not all the stereotypical white men and women with cool and a useful powers. Sure they still had one white dude but I think it’s great he doesn’t have any actual powers.
Deadpool also does an awesome job with this!! Having disabilities, plus size characters, key women characters (domino) other than the one girl who was a plot device (Vanessa) and poc (russel and domino), etc. and a lesbian couple! Love it. And I love the found family aspects and the diversity! It makes me happy to see.
Even deadpool in deadpool 2 shows that xmen has issues within them. In that conference room most were white men tbh. They value certain kinds of people and often the rest of the mutants with unfavorable powers go with Magneto, just to be accepted even if he’s got evil and bad intentions. To me, Charles and Erik have bad intentions and don’t actually care about helping the mutants have a safe space, they’re mostly focused on how the rest of society will accept them. Charles wants to do it peacefully and magneto wants to do it forcefully. They don’t actually set up any kind of contingencies or start petitions and laws and policies that will actually help these poor kids. (Ex. Morlocks)
In the justice league too, you can see the characters with more physical differences like Martian manhunter, lagoon boy, beast boy, etc. aren’t many. They’re not seen as main character material, not able to be marketable in the same sexy way that Hawkwoman could be, etc. they’re underutilized in the league and underrepresented. Take killer croc or the killer shark guy. There’s literally so few of them around in DC comics and movies and aren’t marketed to the general audience. Like, there’s a reason why Marvel focuses on certain characters over others. Reason why they focus on avengers over xmen. But it’s changing and more diverse characters are being represented so that’s good. Hope they keep it up👍
Anyways this is getting super long so I’ll leave it here, sorry if it doesn’t make sense? But I just love talking about stuff like this

I don't know when fanon loustat became so weird! something happened along the way, but I almost don't recognize my ship anymore, I'll need to disinfect or amputate it.
So true bestie, here is my theory:
TW: stream of consciousness writing as per my usual MO.
Here is the story of how VC the series of a hundred sad pretty boy twinks and the one manic twink, became hetero somehow...
Tumblr media
I think fandom in general lives in a world of grandiose exaggeration of character traits, every character gets put through a game of telephone of a million or more people with their own experiences projecting. And because as humans we have to put things in neat little boxes. Funny character, sad character, sexy character etc, villain, hero, and all are heavily depend up on already established media tropes. Book characters (with so many pages of complex traits) and relationships get simplified to be understood, especially for a larger audience. The tv show didn't have enough episodes to write a story of a relationship that was fueled pure existential dread, so it became an explicitly abusive relationship. Their relationship got condensed simplified and boxed in in a way average people can understand in under 24hrs.
It's made worst on Tumblr were we have an epidemic when sociology terms get abused to all hell by people with massive victim complexes, and or sheltered life experiences. People gain second hand/or even further removed knowledge of a sociological/psychological phenomenon, it escapes academia and into the hands of people with no understanding, decorum, or self restraint who misinterpret and abuse it.
So you have pretentious annoying people who already like to put things in distinct boxes, with a history of abusing lofty theories, carrying massive victim complexes, and with little exposure to people with varying life experiences/beliefs:....get a hold of a relationship with large glaring power imbalances told through a biased lense (the point) think.... this black gay male protagonist living in an egregiously oppressive horrible time in a romantic relationship with someone so much more powerful get abused and then they come to the correct conclusion of ....he is to be sympathized with and understood....but then they jump to the conclusion that must mean..... he's good person and he is right....and then he's a good person and he is right all of the time and should not be criticized. So you have people upholding Louis as this untouchable righteous pure character that can only be analyze through the lens of victim or the viewer is evil.
His oppressor is a powerful white bisexual man, that uses (in the TV show anyway) violence that is usually gendered (abuse statistics men are the perpetuators, and women & children the victims 80-90% of the times) domestic violence. There is a child in the home, made by Lestat but cared for by Louis because Lestat does not want a child intervening in their relationship (in the tv show). Oh Also He's being cheated on by a man with a woman! People who grew up in a world of mainly abusive heterosexual nuclear families, with no experience with personal same sex relationships, are going to use that as their reference point. Gay couples hurting each other doesn't exist. If you only reference het relationship subliminally in your show set in 1910s, then you're intending it to be het, no nuance here!
So now Louis is a morally correct victim to be protected, and a powerless caretaker experiencing domestic violence from a white man cheating on him with a white woman. So to the mind that fed a delicious milkshake of the iwtv plot (the tv show) prone to boxing, simplifying, and flanderizing... Louis becomes a woman and a mother. The only people, these people, know to fulfill those roles. They are forgetting how much the dynamics change in a gay male relationship. So Louis becomes a woman (or feminine as if the feminine is a distinct static state of being instead of a name given to a bunch of traits, actions behavior, etc). And Lestat becomes a man, a very straight masculine man somehow.
Because:
1. Only women get abused by men.
2. Only women want to be parents.
3. You can't reference white het relationship, (the majority of relationships in media) with an interracial gay couple unless you intended one to be a feminine breedable woman.
4. Mothers are never abusers of children, only fathers.
5. If you're a weaker partner you bottom, because it's not based on arbitrary sexual preference, it's based on ironclad oppression facts and figures.
6. If you bottom you are a woman.
7. Femininity and masculinity are real, gender is real, when in a gay relationship, you get assigned your roles immediately.
Tumblr media
Because if Louis is the weak feminine good woman, Lestat is the big strong evil man. So all Lestat's very effeminate sexually liberated behaviors get ignored, or down right disputed. The man did drag! His bisexuality and gender nonconformity presents such a ugly wrench in their new fanon wheel.
And if it gets even worse, the people saying these things are unapologetically turned on by the power imbalances and codependent is hot (ask Queen Octavia Butler). Of course, they were, fed on a diet of yaoi, and slash written by straight women, The fact Lestat has these privileges, the fact abused and cheated on Louis is very erotic for them! Louis was bottom, the bottom was synonymous with woman, and vice versa. And to any people on this site whatever turns you on is above criticism! Don't yuck anyone's yum. A few creators started putting these ideas into their work, and it got popular so they continued. However, I didn't mind these people and kept my distance, and my feelings in the group chat until they developed an entitlement to the work of others. Other fanfic writers and other artists had to create works that matched their vision of amc-loustat or it was bigoted and evil. And worthy of horrible anon hate. And that is where I come in, and caused a schism by getting really loud with my own opinions on my very blockable blog. Now there is a divide.
Sadly we can't disinfect, so I say amputated. Form your fandom pocket of semi sane people and leave the rest to wallow in their filth.
Tumblr media
It's no fun, and I leave a fandom when I ain't having fun no more.

Any thoughts on an au where Hana becomes All For Ones successor instead of Tomura? Or where they are both his successors and have a sorta Daki and Gyutaro (Demon Slayer) dynamic of villainous siblings?
I once wondered why exactly AFO didn’t pick Hana to kidnap/manipulate/groom. Like, she’s also a Shimura child - in fact she was born first, so if he had been planning for a sort of ‘Torture All Might With A Shimura Descendant (Before Then Using The Child As A Vessel For My Immortal Evil Soul?)’ all this time, he could’ve started earlier. She’s a girl, who looks even more like Nana, so the psychological torment for All Might would’ve been higher, probably.
One of the more popular theories in fandom seems to be: Shimura Tenko was born quirkless; AFO gave him the Decay quirk that would eventually bring ruin to the family and allow for AFO to swoop in as a ‘savior’. And thus it seemed like the Shimura tragedy was plotted by AFO nearly every step of the way:
1) Take one Shimura Child
2) Give them Decay
3) Wait for (or somehow induce) Accident
4) Profit
But then, if this was the plan, why not use Hana? All For One (Quirk) can take away any original quirk Hana had anyways, so Decay could still be bestowed and he can still bullshit some explanation about mutant quirks and innate urge to destroy and cultivate a ‘Symbol of Fear’. Simply put, why Tenko as the figure for his nefarious plan and not Hana?
Was it because AFO found the Shimura family too late and Hana already manifested a quirk and so it would’ve been suspicious if she suddenly changed powers? Was it because AFO didn’t actually have a specific ‘Use Shimura to Eventually Torture All Might’ plan (or had several to choose from but hasn’t decided on one yet) but when Tenko was indeed born quirkless, AFO thought that was too good an opportunity to pass up? Did Tenko have some quality that Hana didn’t and AFO focused on that? Or was it, as the responses to my question suggest, because AFO is a sexist bastard and a girl was no good (although he seemed to have been okay having girls as spares in his shady orphanage)?
It’s all kinda convoluted, these questions and what ifs. In any case, an AU where (Tenko still exists but) Hana was chosen as successor would mean, I think, that: All For One had an eye on the Shimura family for a long while before deciding to enact his plan, and he would specifically pick Hana either for a small bonus psychological torment to give All Might (super Nana look-alike) or because Hana had some quality he preferred/needed (her budding trait of sneakiness?) or a secret third thing. Which means AFO here is just a bit crueler, and his exact plot is slightly different, and also apparently he does not mind having a girl for a vessel (agender/genderfluid All For One, Go!). Fun elements to explore.
-
For some shameless self promotion tho, I actually have written an (unfinished) fanfic in which Hana survives and while she isn’t AFO’s successor, she’s nevertheless also groomed to take on a role in AFO’s evil plots, as sort of support for Tomura:
Unfortunately I am not familiar with Demon Slayer and am not sure what dynamic Daki and Gyutaro have, but I too had wanted to explore what villainous Shimura siblings would be like.
Between the different and perhaps clashing survival tactics both would develop; the potential for some unnerving AFO/OFA older sibling-younger sibling parallel; me having AFO give Hana a lying quirk (because he’s cruel with a terrible sense of humor like that); and me taking cues from this real interesting quote of Oneshot Tenko’s Hana’s
Tumblr media
—I thought I could have a fascinating AU to play with. It’s a WIP I’m actually particularly proud of, and if you decide to read it, I hope you like it too!

Hello and welcome to Day 17 of "Let's Explore My Plot Bunnies"
Tumblr media
I am going on my 3rd day in a row talking about MHA crack/crossover plot bunnies and I am dreading the never ending list of ideas that I have for this fandom - look the setting for MHA just opens so many doors to explaining how zany crossovers are possible and my brain likes possibilities too much not to delve into them.
Anyway, without further rambling from me, today I wanna talk about a Bakugan: Battle Brawlers and My Hero Academia crossover. (Bakugan was my childhood - as well as many other people's childhood. There was no doubt in my mind that, at one point or another, my brain would make a crossover with this gem of a show. It was literally a matter of time.)
As far as my notes are concerned, I titled this: "Trials of Vestroia" for the 1st Season of Bakugan Battle Brawlers and "Battle for Vestroia" for the second.
The gist of the story is that in the MHA universe, at around the time Izuku is 10 years old, cards suddenly start falling from the sky. Most people, being used to Quirks creating strange phenomenons, just believe this was "a poor attempt at advertising some magic show" and forget about it. The ones that don't forget about the cards are the Quirkless people who, instead of writing this off as a one-time phenomenon, get curious about the cards and end up resorting to discussions on the internet with other just as curious people.
(If the Quirkless are 20% of the world's population, then the number is about as high as the population of Europe... which is enough people to start a game like this)
This kickstarts the beginning of Bakugan as a game mostly known within the Quirkless community, and Izuku is one of the kids that helped create and promote the rules of the game - aka Izuku is part of the Battle Brawlers.
This gives Izuku an opportunity to meet and befriend other Quirkless kids, and it also gives him a partner Bakugan by the name of Leonidas and, later on, Naga joins the party as well.
I know you may have had a double take when you read Naga, but hear me out...
There is a way to make this work, and it involves separating the good and bad parts of Naga. Basically, the Naga that remained trapped into the Silent Core is the Bad™️ Naga - Evil Naga if you will - while the good part of Naga was expelled with the Infinity Core towards Earth and found by Izuku. The Good Naga's memories are very much jumbled, and it isn't until Izuku meets Dan Kuso and Draco for the first time face-to-face that Izuku knows who Naga is and what he did.
As for Leonidas, he is Leonidas from the game, but I reworked his backstory so that he is just another normal Bakugan of Vestroia, and I made him Darkus element. Here is a photo of Leonidas I found on wiki for those who don't know how he looks like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Izuku enjoys playing the new game he helped create a lot, but the plot starts moving when Izuku bumps into Masquerade, who is challenging another player to a battle where if you lose your Bakugan go to the Doom Dimension and never return again. Izuku, after interfering, accepts Masquerade's challenge so the other player doesn't. Izuku wins, but he does still lose 2 Bakugans to Masquerade's Doom Dimension.
Later that day, he informs the other Brawlers of Masquerade's acts, and so the plot of Bakugan starts.
Other little details:
Izuku is 10 when the cards fall from the sky and 12 when he first meets Masquerade, and the plot starts. This means Izuku is around Marucho's age when the Bakugan Plot starts.
Naga without memories is a lot more nice to people and also a lot easier to influence. Cue Izuku's power as a "good influence" over the main villain of the world being shown in full here.
While it is true that during the "Trials of Vestroia," we have more Quirkless people knowing about and playing Bakugan, as the seasons progress, so does the popularity of the game. As such, by the time Gundalian Invasion starts, both Quirkless and Quirked people play Bakugan.
Bakugou is one of the first people with Quirks to like *see* how Bakugan is played and how dangerous it is during the 1st season. While he may not be interested in playing this game himself (I still haven't decided if I should make him play or not) what he is interested in is Izuku’s well-being... as reluctant as that thought might be. So, yey for Izuku and Bakugou reconciliation (maybe during New Vestroia).
I want Izuku as a Darkus element brawler because, as tempting as having him be Ventus, Darkus is just more fitting for Izuku, I feel. And let's be fair, if there are people that could make the "dark side" look like a good and nice choice, it is Alice and Izuku. (I will die on this hill, goddammit)
And this is about it.
So, what do you think? Good? Bad? Very clearly a crack fic? Let me know!
I wish you all a good day/night and hope you take care of yourselves!
See you tomorrow,

Season 6 intro analysis (that somehow turned into a Hawks rant, sorry about that):
So the new intro looks amazing.
Everyone is shaded like All Might and i wonder if that's supposed to mean something..
also this is like poorly written and stuff because I'm not good at this kind thing. I call it analysis but it's more me trying to stitch my thoughts together and probably failing. If someone wants to add things to make it more coherent or complete destroy my stupid theories they can...
Also also tumblr is doing that thing again where it posts my unfinished drafts but at least this time it's almost done so I'll just edit it like this instead of deleting it
ALSO ALSO ALSO SPOILERS FOR ANIME ONLY WATCHERS I GUESS (because only one episode is out at the moment and I talk about stuff that'll be in future episodes)
Am I doing this right? Should I tag season 6 spoilers if the episode is not out yet? Or is it still considered manga spoiler?
Tumblr media
The way All Might is drawn is supposed to represent the old style comic books, and the contrast between him and the other characters shows how he's kind of an unreachable ideal.
This intro looks more like those old style comic books with the style of animation they chose. There's even shots that are divided like manga panels and there's words used as sound effects like "thud" and "rrmmmbll" for the shaking ground and "boom" for Bakugou's explosions
Tumblr media
I mean look at the very first shot and tell me this doesn't look like an old comic book to you:
Tumblr media
Look at this dramatic shading:
Tumblr media
I wanted to say that the use of this type of shading maybe shows how our heroes are getting closer to that ideal that All Might represents (specifically I'm talking about the main trio).
But they show a lot of other characters with the same shading, including Hawks and Endeavor, who are nothing like All Might.
I read somewhere (i don't remember who wrote it but i think it was someone here on tumblr) that in my hero academia there's this idea of the passing of the torch from the older generation to the newer one. And that All Might and AFO both represent how heroes and villains were in old comic books. There's more of a black and white morality. Good vs pure evil. And that Deku and Tomura represent the new generation where the line of good and evil is more blurred.
I'm not explaining it well but i hope you get the point.
So maybe the All Might type shading is supposed to represent them getting closer to him, but in a bad way??
The heroes are the ones initiating the violence in this arc. And I'm not saying this is a bad thing, they need to stop the potato bastard after all. But they abuse their power and try to solve a problem that is in the grey zone with black and white morality. I'm talking about Hawks here (yes others abuse their power too but this is like the big thing that happens in this arc so I'm using it as an example).
Tumblr media
Heroes aren't supposed to kill, and yet Hawks murders Twice because he is the hero and Twice is the villain. He justifies it by saying it's for the greater good and that Twice was too dangerous to be left alive, but the audience knows that that's bullshit. Or at least the ones with a brain know!
Tumblr media
Twice is not "pure evil", he's anything but that. If he hadn't died he would probably be the easiest LOV member to save because he doesn't want to be a villain. Twice didn't have a personal motivation for revenge. All he wanted was companionship and for the world to not treat him like shit. You would just need to show him proof that you wanted to help him get rehabilitated and the most important part, extend the offer for help to his friends.
It would have been literally so easy!
But Hawks chooses not to do that and instead stabs an unarmed person in the back while he was trying to run away.
So yeah my conclusion is that the shading represents the characters acting with that black and white morality mindset that i mentioned above. They're taking steps backwards into the past in a way, by allowing the labels of hero and villain to cloud their judgment.
But at some point in the intro the dramatic shading stops and the rest uses the normal animation we usually see in the show. A bit like the gif i used above that transitions from the vintage style logo to the new one.
That's also when we start seeing group shots instead of characters standing alone. Kind of how after All Might's retirement heroes started working in teams. No one person can solve the problem but if they work together they can.
Maybe that's them realising that the way they were handling things was not working so it's time to try something new.
I want to emphasise this shot of the kids taken straight from the manga:
Tumblr media
Again because old generation passing the torch to the new generation and all that. Our kids have spent the past 5 seasons learning and growing and now they'll become greater heroes than the ones that came before them. They represent the future.
Also I'm doing this completely out of order since tumblr decided to be a little shit today. I want to go back to this shot i used in the beginning but this is a few seconds after:
Tumblr media
Something something about them coming out of the shadows, and looking all determined like that. Shonen protagonist mid battle energy boost because they thought about their friends (maybe). It still looks stylized because of the colours but the shading is less dramatic now.
There's one last thing I want to mention. There's this one shot that stands out apart from all the rest:
Tumblr media
Dabi looks... blurry for some reason. His colors bleed outside the lines. It's kind of like when you use too much water with watercolors and it starts spreading everywhere without control.
Literally everything else in this intro looks super crisp and HD except him. But it's not in a bad way like usual. Bones has a habit of fucking up Dabi's design, but this looks more like a stylistic choice.
I don't know exactly what this is supposed to symbolise. Maybe the fact that he feels separate from everyone else because his real self is dead to the world. Or maybe it's that thing i read somewhere (again I don't remember who wrote this sorry) Dabi is a character that is stuck in the past,so maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know... someone with better skills at analysing stuff like this can maybe figure it out.

Against Nostalgia | Chapter Three
Summary: Fifteen years after the end of the second war against Voldemort, Hermione Granger is invited to Hogwarts for a one-year appointment as the professor for History of Magic, forcing her to take a break from a successful career at the Ministry of Magic. Draco Malfoy, meanwhile, is Hogwarts’ Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. He’s a former Auror, despite the fact that he still bears the Dark Mark. Though there’s mutual distrust between them, sparks quickly fly between Hermione and Draco…sometimes literally. And although the war is long over, it doesn’t take an interest in History of Magic to see that history is intent on repeating. Between them, Hermione and Draco have the power to shatter the world they know. Or, maybe, the could make it into something new. (Imagine if they fell in love at the same time.)
Pairing: Dramione
Word Count: 7,140
In this chapter, we see Professors Malfoy and Granger in action... in the classroom. Because that’s what we look for in dark academia, right?
Thank you to @iftheshoef1tz + @poisonivy206 + Carter + Farrah + Gillian for beta reading this. You have the sharpest eyes, the best questions, and the biggest hearts. All mistakes, as always, are my own.
Thank you all for the love and support on this fic! I hope you enjoy the latest chapter 🧡

The first years in particular always stare at him, and so Draco starts the first day of the school year the way he’s started the past three: by shoving up the sleeves of his robes and revealing the Mark on his forearm while the Gryffindors’ and Hufflepuffs’ eyes go round as saucers.
“I can tell you about defending yourself against Dark magic from experience,” he says, once he hears the first student squirm in the silence, “both as the good wizard and the evil one. I’ve met many of the creatures we’ll be learning about in your course of study, and called them friend or foe at different times. And what I know is this: what seems very clearly evil to you now will not always remain so. Goodness and evil may seem, at different moments, like their own kind of traps.”
One of the Gryffindors, Alfie Prewett, scowls at this. Draco stares at him until the boy is forced to meet his eyes, his lips nearly the scarlet of his tie.
“I am not here to instruct you in morality,” he continues, “rather my goal is to ensure you’re prepared for whatever you might face. But I will tell you that your fears are instructive.”
The Ministry and McGonagall would have him finish his opening salvo with a paean to light and goodness, but they’re not watching this class and Draco’s frankly not in the mood. Not when he’s playing Dark wizard on their orders.
Instead, he tells them about the origins of Dark magic and the creatures they know as monsters.
“You need to know that there are times when you may use these spells and feel as if you are causing harm to someone or something that doesn’t deserve it. Trust your instincts and keep going.”
A witch with deep brown skin and close-cropped curls raises her hand into the air, her Gryffindor tie catching the light with the motion.
“So if a vampire is bent on sucking our blood, we should think about offering our necks?”
The tone of her question, the certainty in it, reminds him so strongly of Hermione that Draco has to bite back a smile.

as posed by @lunarscaled, how my galdur bait 3 muses react to meeting their 'bad end' selves:
gale:
well. he's done some egregious things in mine and ax's lore to get where he finally is, a master of his dominion delving the secrets of hell and infernal machinery in a bid to save the woman he loves from her death sentence and allow her to walk the world again. seeing himself as a control freak or god-figure is just a stark reminder that ethics and scruples are a good thing to have in academia. also what happened to his skin care routine, he looks harrowing. he has jokes to cover up just how scared he is of how easily he can see his desperation turning into this even now.
aurelia:
sees herself alone, and less discerning in her pragmatism. someone who chose short-sighted power over enduring balance. a master of the wilds who strangles out whatever encroachment does not bow to her iron will. a controlling, unthinking beast who forces what she once respected to instead kneel before her as puppets and slaves. it is not merely monsters she hunts now, but any dissent or threat to her own reign. down with the oakfather. it is the daughter of the grove that rules now. aurelia is immediately aiming an arrow at her bad end self and then using that distraction to try and fit a sussur blade between her ribs, shut up and DIE--
hel:
while many of these endings are a straight up turn to villainy, hel doesn't really have that. she can make some cruel decisions, but she never really slots into outright evil. her worst outcome is being so broken by the cycle of revenge and blood that she loses herself in pursuit of it, and when she comes to her senses, she's utterly broken. she is tired. she wants another will to dominate her own and tell her what is right, and take the terror of free will from her. most endgames whether solo or romanced will see her start to rebuild from that -- with one exception. a vampire lord and his shattered doll of a consort. she is just a pretty, glamoured accessory to a cruel master, unable to even remember what resistance looks like. hel pities her bad end self, and seeks some chance to help her, rather than harm her further.
sybelle:
i'm having such a hard time with this. she's the token good teammate. even hel has her moments of being needlessly cruel or self-serving. sybelle is just nice and chill. maybe like hel she has that... not turning evil but definitely her bad end is lacking in autonomy and being made a pawn or preyed upon. i have to bake this one out a bit more but i'm thinking she may play directly into bad end gale as an acolyte, enforcer, or straight up mindless pawn under the crown's will. sybelle is screaming crying throwing up apologizing to wyll she wasn't the hero he saw in her when she sees her bad end self and has to be calmed down by other companions because HONEY... THIS ISN'T REALLY YOUR FAULT...
valas:
usurps uncle s and cousin o as grandpa's favorite. he doesn't want this, but it felt right at the time. no longer the prodigal, the outsider, the wanderer. he is tired. he wants peace, even if he must wage war to get it. he won’t find it, of course. his father would be horrified. but he doesn’t want to let the opportunity to be more to pass him by. to strike back. strike harder. he must lie in the bed he has made for centuries after, at the cost of everything he ever was before, degraded under the unrelenting rage and blood his grandfather demands. valas takes one glimpse at his bad end self and, like aurelia, goes immediately for the most powerful spell he has on hand. he has to make this right. he has to kill this thing brutally and immediately. it can't be allowed to go on. he's horrified and enraged in equal measures.

What is happening to shonen?
23/09/2022
Ok guys so if you have seen my least post, you know I've been consuming a lot of anime recently, and mostly of that anime is shonen because well, it is my favourite gender among all the anime. So as I LOVED tokyo revengers, I did something I usually don't ever do, that is looking for the manga and I am currently reading it.
And I am not liking the latest arc. I am seriously starting to think it should have ended already, despite my love for the story and the characters. The main character should understand that not everybody can be saved.
Tumblr media
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
So ok. You did it. You saved the girl you are in love with, you managed to get engaged with her, saved her brother, Chifuyu and like 95% of your friends...you managed to avoid not only one aweful future but most of all the terrible consequences of ToMan turning into an evil actually adult crime mafia and everybody not only is happy but also evolved and moved on....and the only person you lost is Mikey, that also evolved but, dramatically enough, never was truly a good person, never wanted to leave the dark path of deliquence and will be there forever. Even Draken says so! It was heartbreaking but logic and it should have been kept like that.
Instead we have...I don't know exactly what we have....
I also caught up with Boku No Hero Academia and srl, I am seeying the exact same problem. So you have this amazing story, powers, characters (with real evolution, despite the cliches of shonen being displayed since the beginning) and NOW....it has been like 1000 chapters since any real things actually happening. Deku is stucked. The villains are not villains anymore, there are too much stories going on....and the only real plot progress we have is... well, let's talk about the last chapters of BNHA.
Tumblr media
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
So, I really, really love Bakugo. Yes, he is cliche, yes he is clearly the author's fav and all... but he is a very well constructed character that was NOT perfect and that made OH SO MANY MISTAKES and that was CHANGING and lord I loved his redemption arc (and yes I ship BKDK but that doesn't mean I want to be their relationship forced or whatever, I already found Deku's obsession over him a bit problematic so to be a shipper does not mean I want something bad written, that is for my own fandom consumption). So I was LOVING what was being done...and then he died.
And yes, it hurt, and yes, I did not want that, but I kinda enjoyed it. Why? Because 1. it was unexpected 2. It was a real hero death 3. there was consequences to be ahead
I wanted to see Deku reaction.
I wanted to see the students grief. I found Bakugo had still lots to do and he was still on his path to evolve, but yet, it was a good turning in events, and, if bound to accept his death, then it was an AMAZING death. Including the heaven all might's card passage and all.
AND WHAT HAPPENED?
Literally 1 chapter or 2 later, he is resurrected. WHAT THE FUCK.
Kōhei Horikoshi, if you don't want to kill him, don't do it. If you want to make us think he is dead because he is injured and disappeared but then turns out he is still alive, I am ok. Typical, but I enjoy the idea. BUT WHEN YOU HEART EXPLODED, YOU ARE DEAD.
This resurrection was shit. Firstly, forced resurrections are a lack of respect for the character and the reader. Secondly, what was all that for? What about Deku's teased reaction, if he is still alive? (and by the way Izuku is taking his time to fucking arrive). Thirdly, could it be more forced? Like seriously the convenient guy that turns into a heart was there? What the fuck.
I am very frustated with this manga. I already found the pace SO SLOW - first thought it was an anime thing, but then discovered the manga's pace is even slowler - but was enjoying it a lot. And then.... I am really starting to dread that, just as Tokyo Revengers, this last arc is going to be unnecessarily long and lame. And what about the Todoroky family story that was pure gold and seems to have been forgotten for the sake of endless new villains and never ending new substories?
I do not know. I am extremely disappointed, and I am sure I am not the first thinking like this. Still want to keep reading, but seriously, what is happening to shonen?

R.F. Kuang: The Poppy War
Power dictates acceptability.
As I wrapped up The Poppy War, I couldn't help but think of how different my opinion of this story would have been if it had been written by anyone other than Rebecca Kuang.
The story ends with a deus ex machina. If we look at the book from a macroscopic perspective, from the traditional elevated perspective of fantasy, that ending might feel forced, abrupt, and unsatisfying.
For Kuang, and for us as the reader, we are instead focused on the microscopic version of The Poppy War— the deep inner conflict of Fang Runin. The conclusion of The Poppy War is the conclusion of Rin's intense tightrope walk across inner evil. Far from abrupt, it is the climax of a booklong build of emotional tension.
This is a dark, dark book. It is, broadly, about cycles of hate, fear, grief, pain, and death, each iteration more awful than the last. There are frank, graphic depictions of murder, rape, genocide, self-harm, and drug abuse. That is also my greatest caution about the book: if you're sensitive to those topics, particularly laid as bare as The Poppy War presents them, this is not the book for you. None of them is contextually inappropriate, but they are omnipresent.
This is not a "knights in shining armor ride out and vanquish evil" sort of fantasy. There are no "good guys" here. This is not a "defeated enemy vanishes in a puff of smoke" sort of fantasy, either. Its war, like real wars, can only ever be a terrible thing. The Poppy War is ugly and violent— by design. That brutality propels both the outer and inner conflicts.
Fang Runin is a peasant and a war orphan. To escape an arranged marriage, she makes a desperate bid: she tries to test into the most prestigious military academy of the Empire. When she makes it, against all odds, some crucial truths are told to her. Among these:
The third Poppy War could begin at any time.
When it does, the Empire will probably lose.
Rin is party to a strange power that could decide whether or not it does.
If I had to critique one thing, it would be that I couldn't quite square up the Academy scenes with the war scenes. They were both well-written in their own ways, but they didn't quite feel like they belonged in the same book together.
My particular edition of The Poppy War included some discussion questions (which, let me tell you, made my job much easier), and those questions brought up some good points that let me think about this incongruity a little more clearly. Kuang is a lifelong academic, and both facets of The Poppy War show that academia from different perspectives. The portions at the Academy clearly reflect her life as an academic, but the wartime sections are representations of her area of focus. Kuang studies China, including a current doctoral pursuit in East Asian Languages and Literatures. Kuang has said that The Poppy War and its sequels are inspired by the pains and revolutions of China, particularly the time British oppression during the time of the Opium Wars and through the Chinese Communist Revolution. That influence shows clearly, and that outline makes me very interested to see what comes next.
I'm excited to read the two sequels, The Dragon Republic and The Burning God. But, if I'm being honest? I'm also scared. I'm scared of what happens next to Fang Runin. I don't know where we're going, I can't stop reading it, but I do dread it.

it’s almost sort of an offhand comment but in tlo dionysus says something along the lines of how the connection between olympus and the West TM is more tenuous than ever and if kronos succeeds in defeating the gods then their influence will end and they’ll be gone Forever, but at least in my memory it barely seems to be a factor in percy’s fight against kronos--except now i’m remembering that, yes, their rallying cry is “for the gods,” but at the same time... it seems to me like he’s fighting for his fellow campers, and for the people of new york, first and foremost. the gods are almost an afterthought
which is part of richard’s course correction wrt the dominance of the “flame of the West” as the driving force of civilization, obviously, but it’s also a function of... well, where would the gods hypothetically move after that? cultural power in the twentieth century ostensibly moved westward from new york city to los angeles with the advent of hollywood, but where would it be today? seoul? beijing? tokyo?
except that makes no goddamn sense, because a) those places had relatively minor exposure to greco-roman mythology via exploration/colonization b) china especially as a civilization is way older than classical greece and c) they have their own cultural mythos which, if superimposed with a greco-roman coat of paint, would be .... uh... i think the correct term here is “sussy af”
SO that’s why i think richard introducing other pantheons into his franchise was a really really good idea, and is part of this massive course correction as the conversation around western imperialist hegemony becomes more and more nuanced. a cash grab? maybe. and maybe richard isn’t the right person to portray or play around with different mythologies, but again, it’s really strong evidence of how he recognized critiques of his work and incorporated them, which, tbh, i think is really admirable. i mean, look at jkr, who doubled down on unfortunate implications so hard that she is now one of the most recognizable faces of a hate movement, and look at richard, who was part of the first wave of ya lgbtq protagonists in the early 2010s (oh god that sentence just hurt me to write)

Something I love about Obey Me is that, on the whole, for every trait a character has, they have another trait that actively counters it and thus makes them seem genuinely conflicting on a surface level, but wonderfully three dimensional on a deeper dive into their character.
E.g. People in the early-game sometimes think Diavolo comes across as a little two-faced, or that there’s something a little suspicious about him and the things he does - and I def. originally saw some theories (and when I first started playing, had some suspicions of my own) that he might end up being the real “villain” of the game.
A lot of this stems from the fact that he seems genuinely friendly, open, and willing to spend time with the exchange students in casual, informal ways, but also has abilities and moments of power abuse that seem to completely diverge from the image of the smiling prince.
Surely someone who does this is hiding something? Surely that carefree attitude is just a facade? It’s definitely the sort of twist you could expect with the character setup present in Diavolo.
But when you look at it, there’s a reason behind this duality that doesn’t actually fall into the usual tropes - and instead builds a much more interesting, well-rounded character.
(Spoilers ahead, both for Lesson 16 and for the most recent Lessons, especially involving Diavolo’s childhood.)
For instance, how could he claim to see Lucifer as a friend when he has him bound by an Oath that puts an incredible power imbalance in their relationship, and stops him from speaking of it?
The answer is that he’s genuinely never had a friend in his entire long life that hasn’t had some form of reason to stay by his side. To Diavolo, the Oath was a way of ensuring Lucifer couldn’t leave - not a way of keeping control. He wanted Lucifer to be his friend, has been enamoured with him even since Lucifer was an angel, and took the opportunity to secure that friendship in the only way he knew how.
Because Diavolo is pitifully lonely. Because Diavolo was raised in a way that left him incapable of making friends. Because Diavolo likely never would have been able to make a friend if he hadn’t tethered them to him.
Does this make the Oath any better? No. He took advantage of a broken, freshly fallen angel, terrified of the fates of his siblings, and vowed him to silence and servitude in return for their lives.
But does this mean that the Oath was inherently evil? No. At its core, the Oath was the act of a very lonely man realising he had a chance to secure the one thing he wanted more than anything. It was selfish, but not evil.
It does, however, show us the sort of extent Diavolo will go to get what he wants. He will leverage something over others if he thinks that’s what it takes. This is even reinforced by the truth of Barbatos’ servitude; that he treatened to refuse ascension to the throne if Barbatos didn’t stay.
At the same time, it shows that what he wants, more often than not, is something harmless, if desperate. It’s often a desire for companionship that spurs him into dubious action.
He’s very unlikely to abuse his power to genuinely hurt someone, but he may use his power in a way that has hurtful side effects.
Diavolo is aware that his actions had consequences, and feels guilt. He still isn’t confident that Lucifer and Barbatos genuinely want to stay with him or in his service, and he’s openly aware of the fact that Lucifer, at the very least, doesn’t see them being as close as he does.
He doesn’t want to remove either of them from his service for fear that they really will leave him, but he’s aware that keeping them there potentially against their will isn’t conducive to healthy friendships.
Diavolo has done dubious things for selfish reasons. This is undeniable. But those reasons are genuine and understandable, and something players can easily sympathise with.
That’s the sort of thing you want for a well fleshed-out character; the ability to say “there was something inherently wrong in this action taken,” but also say “I can understand why he took the action, even if it was wrong”.
I focused on Diavolo for this, but here’s another two points I can think of to further illustrate the point:
- Lucifer’s genuine love and care for his family constrasting against his prideful brutality and absolute loyalty to Diavolo above all else (e.g. how he can justify locking Belphie up in the attic. This was an act of love. The alternative was to hand Belphie over to Diavolo and let him face an unknown fate. By locking him up for the duration of the Exchange Programme, Lucifer was working to avoid being disloyal to Diavolo and being disloyal to his family. It was absolutely an imperfect solution. It absolutely had its flaws. It absolutely made things worse. But it was his way of keeping his youngest brother alive and allowing Diavolo’s dream to come to fruition. A dubious act founded in good intentions.)
- Satan’s kind thoughtfulness and amicable nature contrasting against his Wrath and how it affects his brothers (e.g., how he can switch between fretting over Beel’s mental health in one chat, to being so furious with him over his Gluttony that Beel actively goes into hiding in another. Satan is a character rife with stark dualities and his own frantic attempts to try and stitch together something whole. He’s not overly good at it. His Wrath often gets in the way. But he has spent his entire life trying to improve, to find himself, to come to terms with his creation; he is trying every day not to be the Satan that lashes out at the drop of a hat.)
The game isn’t always perfect at showing these characteristics in equal measure, but sometimes that’s the point.
It’s why, for instance, some people write Satan to be a heartless, Wrath-filled asshole, and others write him as a harmless bookworm with a knack for academia; the truth is that he’s both, and a key part of his characterisation is finding balance between the contrasting sides.
On the other hand, it’s why some people completely look over Beel as very two dimensional when he truthfully isn’t. He’s a naturally quiet demon, content for others to see him as a jock with a love of food and nothing more. But in that quiet, he hides a demon struggling with survivor’s guilt who is secretly hurt by how simple people think he really is, and has such a strong love for his family that he puts them before anything else. His characterisation isn’t finding a balance in his contrast, but finding the contrast to begin with.
That’s the point of a three dimensional character. You’re meant to be able to debate about them, and understand them while disagreeing with them. You’re meant to be able to view them from different angles and see something new each time. That’s half the fun of them - that’s what makes them interesting.
I won’t lie and say the game’s great at this all the time, because sometimes it is really, genuinely not, and sometimes even Solmare have a tendency to forget some of the deeper aspects of their characters for the surface-level stuff.
But for what is there? There’s so much interesting craft at work in the characters, and it makes taking a closer look at each of them - and how different players view them - so, so enjoyable.

Only to land perfectly on her feet at the bottom, without okay in the world.
No one will be able to stop what's coming"
Those were the final words of the night as she slipped away into the alleyways, as the sun began to rise signaling the start of a new day in the first day that she'd finally be her true self!
Prologue
"You have to focus Rairaku, you have one of the most powerful quirks anyone has ever seen. You need to learn how to control and harvest the full and complete power of your quirk, then no villain will ever be able to get away from you. Once you're a hero, you will quickly rise in the ranks as a pro. Your quirk will make you a great hero someday, you will be respected by your colleagues and feared by every villain, you'll be able to open an agency to teach and guide others, just like I have with you… None of that will happen though if you don't focus on your training right now!"
"Yeah whatever, you really did a number on me, what would I have done without you to turn into a freak show. Do you think people are intimidated by other people's quirks? How insecure do you have to be in your own power to believe someone is better than you just because they have a better, stronger, flashier quirk than someone else? That's not how this shit works. No one gives a fuck if you have a strong quirk, they judge you before they know you… All this society cares about is if you have a quirk or not, if you do, well you have a chance to be a hero or a villain… Quirkless people are cast aside and left forgotten… You should take yourself as an example here, you had an amazing fire quirk, a villain came along, you lost a battle and lost your quirk, how quickly did the hero commission cast you aside as less than worthless? No one even remembers you as a hero, you only still have a hero license because you know a few tricks here and there that come in handy from time to time… The reality is that they don't care, no one does… You have this crazy idea that if you push me and push my quirk to its limits until my body collapses my quirk will be this superweapon you can offer to the commission on a silver platter, so much that at this point, I don't even know what my quirk can't do… nothing surprises me anymore!"
"That's the beauty of it, there's nothing it can't do. You have no limitations, except the ones you place on your own body essentially making it weak! You keep that strong quirk of yours trapped inside that weak and feeble body of yours, but fear, not I will fix that. You'll be training five more hours a day starting now, so back to training young lady!"
It's no use… My body can't take anymore, it needs a break, but this bitch is never going to give me one… This person should have never been a mother, thank god I'm adopted! I'm so fed up with this training. I don't remember a time I was not training my stupid quirk. I don't even want to be a hero and be just another puppet for the hero commission to control, I want to be free…
This whole shit show will soon end, if it's the last thing I do I'll make it end! I have exactly one month to come up with a plan, a month before I start attending U.A high school, the best hero school in the whole country. I got in through recommendations thanks to my dear old mother.
Making the executive decision to sneak out and try to find some way or idea to execute any sort of plan, but also have fun doing stuff that I probably shouldn't be doing, but who cares? I certainly don't.
Sneaking out has become very easy, living in a fancy neighbourhood isn't all that, live here long enough though and you learn to move in the shadows, allowing myself to become one with the darkness of the night and all that just so nosy neighbours don't see me and start commenting on my "behaviour"...
It's not the first time I've snuck out, certainly won't be the last, but this is the first time that I've gone into the city. Yokohama is truly a beautiful city, especially at night. I love to watch the nightlife, it's the time when villains shine the most, but at the same time, I cannot live among pigs that think they can drunkenly take advantage of an innocent woman just walking home.
Luckily I haven't encountered anything like that tonight, instead, I'm casually relaxing on a rooftop in the middle of the city, looking down at the world like God looking down at his subjects.
"What's someone so young doing up here?" an intimidating voice calls behind me. I already knew someone was approaching me minutes ago…
"Well, if I'm being honest I would say I'm thinking about the murder of a certain ex-pro hero… But better to be here and as far away from them as possible or who knows what I'd do to that bitch… I'm so tired of her living in glory as the world pities her for losing her quirk, while behind closed doors she's an abusive piece of shit!"
"Then jump. It will end all your tiredness, once and for all"
"As much as I'd love to, especially from up here, with this view, I can't, as soon as I start falling my quirk will just levitate back up here. Also even if I could, I'd just be proving her right, proving to her that I'm just as weak and pathetic as she thinks I am, so much that I took the cowards way out. No thank you. I'd suffer a while longer and have the satisfaction of watching her take her last breath. I will not die, not until I shove all her fake heroic ideologies down her stupid throat."
"Hmph… Perhaps then you shouldn't jump… I can however help you deal with her. This world must be cleansed of fake hero pretences and false ideologies. Back to the time where people knew the true meaning of what being a hero truly is!"
"So what? You'll kill her? If so then just go ahead and do it! No one will care about her death. To her, I am just another job the hero commission gave her, one she wasn't even qualified to do. If you do it, don't do it for me and my sad sob story. Do it because you truly believe in cleansing hypocritic heroes from this world. If that is indeed what your goal is I will give you all the information you need on her and all the other corrupt heroes in this society."
"What's your name kid?"
"Rairaku Ishii, you can call me Rai though. And I'd rather for you to not say your name out loud, you never know who could be listening, but I know exactly who you are, I'm telepathic, and it's a pleasure to meet you, I must say I'm a fan!"
"Good. Now about that information, you said you'd give me…"
"First ex-pro hero Pyro, she used to be very popular as Endeavour's sidekick, but now she's lost her quirk. She's basically useless, but people still praise her for some reason. Make it slow, she deserves a slow painful death, "heroes" should never abuse their power or others!"
"Are you sure? There's no turning back after this"
"I've never been more sure of anything in my life. She has to be punished for what she has done. Starting today, I'll be the person I want to be."
"And who might that be?"
"Don't know yet! I could be your accomplice, after all, it seems we'll be seeing a lot more of each other."
"Fine, just know it might take a while, I have pressing matters I need taking care of first"
"The longer you take will just make me kill her myself"
End of the day it really should be me. I should be the one to kill her, I should be the one to do it. After everything, she's put me through? After everything, she's done to me? Killing her… Would that make me a villain? What better than that, a villain goes against every hero ideal she's ever tried to engrave into my brain…
Yes, that's it. I'll be the worst type of villain this world has ever seen.
This is where my fun begins!

Doing some writing today off and on between errands and work, and jumping around various Kings of the Sky installments, specifically Dick, Jason and Cass stuff, so probably gonna post snippets from a bunch of them as I go.
(Kings of the Sky is an AU that goes canon divergent from the point of Jason calling Dick for advice for dealing with Bruce after the Garzonas case and where things end up going dramatically different from that point on. Including Jason not dying, being part of his own lineup of Titans between Dick and Tim’s, Dick being adopted not long after the Church of Blood incident, Cass being the third Wayne kid to be taken in and adopted and with Tim and Duke being next and then Damian coming along later once they find out about him. This is basically my ‘the family’s alright’ AU with largely ‘Good Dad Bruce’ except for Dick and then Jason yelling some sense into him about the other, respectively, in the first two installments, just FYI).
Anyway, this bit is from a story called “In Their Shadows Grow Trees Of Good and Evil,” set about a year after Cass has been adopted, when she and Jason are both sixteen and Dick’s twenty-one. Also just FYI, because canon has never been specific about what ways Cass is neurodivergent due to the comic-book style ‘rewiring’ of her brain so that she could learn to speak later in life, I tend to go with her being dyslexic and having aphasia. She sticks exclusively to sign language and being a silent presence in her costumed personas, so that there’s no chance of people connecting the dots between Black Bat and Cassandra Wayne, as she mostly speaks verbally in her civilian persona and doesn’t hide her aphasia. The reason there’s not likely to be any obvious signs of aphasia in the snippets of her I post is because I wait until I complete something to choose words at random to replace with aphasia-born mixups, so its more realistic and I’m not gearing her dialogue towards deliberately placed moments. Just in case you were wondering.
In Their Shadows Grow Trees of Good and Evil
“Hey Todd,” sneered an exquisitely obnoxious voice. “Why’s your sister so fucking weird?”
Jason sighed the sigh of a soul a mere century into its eternity of damnation as he rose from the lunch table he’d been studying at and crammed the rest of his books into his backpack. Then he pasted a cheerfully bland smile on his face and turned around, geared for academia warfare (teenage prep school edition).
“Hey Craig,” he said brightly. “Why’d you come out of the womb so ugly your parents had to tie a piece of steak around your neck just to get the family dog to go near you? Mysteries abound.”
The advancing junior slowed a step, momentarily rocked by his truly impressive return volley. The grimace Craig’s already gargoyle-esque features twisted into made his face even more unpleasant to look at than usual, which was quite the feat. Jason would have applauded if just looking at it hadn’t already turned him to stone.
But the bargain basement basilisk kept on towards him rather than turn tail and skulk off to pop his emotional blisters, so Jason sighed a sequel to his first one. Looked like it was one of those days where Craig felt up to powering through. Guess someone had eaten their self-esteem Wheaties that morning. Joy.
“You think you’re pretty hot shit, don’t you, Todd?”
Jason shrugged. “I mean, to be honest I kinda have a one track mind, so right now I’m mostly just thinking about punching you in your mistake.”
“My what?”
“Your face,” Jason elaborated with exaggerated patience.
“Huh?”
“Oh my god, I’m saying your face is a mistake. See, its not as fun when I have to stop and explain it to you. Ugh, you ruin everything.”
He neatly sidestepped the older boy as R2-Dumbass stayed frozen, smoke coming off of his internal CPU while trying to catch up. For a second Jason thought he was home free, but then he remembered the universe fucking hated him so haha, sucks to suck. Also, a small crowd had gathered to witness the verbal jousting match, and nothing invigorated an asshole like Craig more than an audience of like-minded peers. So there was that too.
“Whatever. Laugh it up all you want, you little shit,” the junior rallied. “But just remember, mocking your betters will never change the fact that you were born street trash and you’ll be street trash until the day you die.”
Honestly? Not his best effort. Jason almost felt bad using any of his good material. Seemed like overkill at this point. But he did have a strict Scorched Earth policy to maintain, so.....
“Yeah but my dad could buy out and ruin your dad so that means I still win, right?”
He smirked as the barb landed and Craig’s face set into a sunset vista of strangled purple and furious red. Bam. Direct hit.
“Listen, you - “
“Oh for fuck’s sake, it was rhetorical,” Jason interrupted. “I don’t actually care what you think even a little bit. Nobody does. You don’t matter. Please go be irrelevant elsewhere, you’re fucking dismissed, you loser.”
“Speak for yourself, charity case.” Oh goodie, Craig’s backup singers had finally arrived. Now if only he could remember to care enough to learn their names in the first place. Seriously, who told the extras they could have lines? “All the jokes in the world can’t change who and what you are.”
Jason shrugged and continued nonchalantly up the hill to where his sister was standing with arms crossed, staring down at something on the other side.
“True genius is never appreciated in its own time,” he tossed back over his shoulder. “I’m sure I’ll be immortalized in song eventually.”
The mob of morons deigned to let him go without further incident. Though he suspected that had less to do with his scathing wit and more to do with him being headed towards Cass. She was immaculately presented as always, wearing the Gotham Academy uniform like she was born to it despite hating its uncomfortable stiffness every bit as much as he did. But that was just Cass for you.
For all that she still struggled at times to engage verbally or speak up in social settings, her mastery of body language remained without peer. She could chameleon-camouflage her way into matching poise and posture with anyone - a skill that had allowed her to walk into school on her very first day with her head held high as though she owned everything in her sight. Exuding so much Queen Bee Intimidation Factor even the other hive queens were afraid to approach her  themselves. Sending forth their drones to try and woo her into an alliance, only to see her remain oh-so-casually above it all, a slightly contemptuous smile adorning her lips.
Basically, she scared the shit out of their classmates without them having anywhere close to a true understanding of why, and Jason was outrageously jealous. Rude. Unfair. Why did his siblings always get all the cool toys when all he had was his rakish charm, scintillating intellect and debonair.....nah, who was he kidding. He was fucking awesome.
“Sup, sis,” he said, cresting the hill to stand beside Cass. “Just FYI, I just took a popularity bullet for you, which means you owe me your dessert tonight. Its a family rule that’s totally a real thing and definitely not something I just made up right now because Alf is making chocolate soufflé.”
She made no acknowledgment and remained stock still, a Colossus at Rhodes peering down into the shifting shadows of the parking lot below.
He peered down as well, though with absolutely no idea what they were looking at. Solidarity, yo.
“So are we staring fixedly at anything in particular, or should I just pick my own spot and commit?”
His humor was totally wasted on her as always. Instead of laughing and telling him what a lovable goof he was, she just inclined her head in the direction of a blonde girl where she was standing next to the driver’s side door of a Mercedes-Benz, dictating final commandments to her peons before departing. Well, probably. Jason was just guessing, based on his own body language reads, and like, general disdain for literally everyone at this school that wasn’t related to him.
He made a face. An extra special one reserved just for this classmate in particular. “Ugh, Madison Dunleavy? She’s the worst.”
Cass raised a cool eyebrow. “I thought Craig Hendricks was the worst.”
“He is. They’re both the worst. Its a hotly contested position here at Gotham Academy.”
She rolled her eyes and nodded back down at the Queen of Air and Darkness. “So. You know her?”
“Nope,” Jason said. “Come to think of it, I’ve actually never seen her in my life. No idea who that is. Can’t help you, sorry. Shall we go home?”
The Eyebrow of Inquisition speared him with clear intent. Who the fuck needed words when you could pack the Encyclopedia Britannica into a single facial expression?
Jason sighed gustily.
“I had a slight altercation with her freshman year that led to her declaring her undying enmity for me until the end of time. The word nemesis may or may not have been thrown around once or twice. I can’t recall.”
The Eyebrow of Inquisition lowered nary an inch. Ugh, she wanted more? Why did everyone in his family hate privacy, with the obvious exclusion of himself when snooping through Cass and Dick’s rooms for blackmail material, which was actually intel-gathering and thus another matter entirely.
“Okay so basically what happened was my first week here I overheard her talking shit about me and not even twenty minutes later she was pretending to kiss my ass in homeroom, like probably because of Bruce, y’know? So I just busted out laughing and told her to fuck off and die and she has inexplicably loathed me ever since.”
Avoiding further Eyebrow Inquisition-ing, he made a show of peering around aimlessly. When the silence extended and it was clear Cass was absolutely not going to break first, Jason waved a hand in dismissal and took to peering oh so casually at his fingernails. "I suppose I was less tactful back in those days.”
He chanced a look up, finally, and saw his sister’s eyebrow had somehow managed to mighty morphin power ranger its way into a configuration evoking both judgment and disbelief, with the latter perhaps aimed at the idea he was significantly differing in the tact department these days either.
“I don’t love the implications your face is making right now,” he told her.
She ignored him, because of course she did.
“Does she know Dick?” She asked instead. Jason shrugged.
“I mean, maybe? She’s probably seen him around at one of those stupid galas we have to go to, and actually I think maybe she has an older brother who was either in Dick’s grade or like, one above or below it? I don’t know.”
Now both eyebrows were doing the dance of disbelief. Okay, so maybe that was poor situational awareness on his part, since it wasn’t like Gotham Academy was a big school with a ton of other kids and also he’d only been in the same class as Madison for like over two whole years, but whatever. There were extingent circumstances.
“Look, she’s a total snob who’s always looked down on me and in return I willfully ignore both her existence and that of everyone and everything even tangentially related to her. Its called equality, Cass.”
She pursed her lips and went back to the peering, because of course in the mind of Cass it made total sense that the Grand Inquisition didn’t need to be followed up by any explanation on her part, what the hell. Like was he supposed to have inferred it?
“What’s this all about anyway?”
“I heard her talking about Dick earlier,” she said without peeling her eyes away from her personal recon mission. “I don’t know what she said though, I just heard her say Grayson, and then I was busy looking at what her body was saying. I know it was about Dick because she shut down when she saw me. And I didn’t like the way she....looked....before that happened. The way she was talking. It was.....”
Jason frowned but held back any follow-up questions while he waited - with total patience because he wasn’t an absolute cad, thank you very much - for his sister to find the word she was hunting for. It was a major source of frustration for her, that whatever neural map her brain followed put body language and spoken language in totally different regions of her brain, separated by a fairly great divide. Meaning she usually had to make a conscious choice to focus on body language or conventional languages - whether verbal or sign. But it tended to be one or the other; she’d yet to master taking in and comprehending both forms of ‘language’ at the same time. And none of them had quite figured out how to convince her that she wasn’t actually missing anything when she chose to focus on one specific form of communication - that she was still observing far more than most people ever would.
“Proprietary,” Cass settled on at last. She nodded her satisfaction with her choice of word, and Jason waited a whole two point five seconds before sticking  his whole foot in his mouth.
“Proprietary?” He asked with a scrunched nose as he weighed that for possible context and implications. “You sure?”
She glared. He winced. It was a whole thing.
“Yeah, I know, sorry, sorry, I heard it the second it was out of my mouth. We don’t actually have to experiment with the legitimacy of if looks could kill.”
Cass rolled her eyes, but eh. That could’ve gone worse.
Jason swiftly redirected attention anyway. Discretion is the better part of valor, after all.
“So. The Queen of Air and Darkness was talking about our big bro, and her mood was.....proprietary, huh?” He recapped while digesting the info like a boss. “Well. Definitely not loving that, I gotta say. Hold please.”
Pulling out his phone and pulling up his most recent texts, he began typing furiously.
“What are you doing?” Cass asked.
“Texting Tom,” he replied, because duh. Hah, now it was his chance to have the answers that should be patently obvious and thus make with the ‘are you kidding me’ when she asked obvious questions she should know the answer to! How do you like them apples, sis?
“Why are you texting your boyfriend right now?”
Jason rolled his eyes, because fair is fair, but never ceased texting for a moment. Time was of the essence here, probably. Well, maybe. Okay probably not. But it’d still been like half an hour since he and Tom had last texted and that’s a very fucking long time in teenage years.
“To be our getaway driver tonight, obviously.”
She stared at him. He didn’t look up, but he could feel it anyway. He was very intuitive like that.
“What?”
Jason heaved another sigh, one keyed to tones of ‘oh my god, do I really have to spell this out,” exasperation. He was just racking up the bonus points here. It was really too bad this wasn’t an actual competition he could actually win and this was all just pettiness taking place wholly in his own head. Lame.
“Well, clearly we now have to go snoop in Madison’s house aka lair to see if its actually a house or a full on lair. Because she’s either a creeper or like, legit evil, and its important to know which one before we proceed, because obviously we can only bust her for being a weird creeper about our brother as Jason and Cass, whereas if she’s legit evil, that’s gotta go down as Robin and Black Bat. I’ll handle the snooping, you’ll take look-out, but we still need a wheelman and that’s why I’m texting Tom. This is all very mission-oriented, okay. I’m a professional.”
“Right,” she affirmed, while sounding anything but convinced. “Why don’t we just tell Bruce?”
Without looking up or breaking stride, he said: “I’m going to give you til I finish typing this sentence to figure out what was wrong with what you just said. Remember that we are talking about hypothetical danger to our brother, and also Bruce’s idea of a proportionate response to any of his children being in even hypothetical danger. And also our brother’s idea of a proportionate response to Bruce’s idea of a proportionate response. Look, you’re still new so I’m gonna need you to just trust me on this one. Its gonna be a no on telling Bruce without further intel.”
Cass said nothing in response to that, which meant that she was conceding the point and recognized the wisdom of his words. Or maybe that she was just gonna go ahead and do what she wanted anyway and just wasn’t bothering to fight about it, but it was probably that first thing.
“Well you better not just make out with your boyfriend all night,” is what she said at last, and that got his attention reeeeeal quick like.
“Umm. Wow. Okay. So, first off, you’re not the boss of me and who I make out with and when, so jot that down. And second, now I’m definitely going to make out with my boyfriend extra hard, with the exception of when we are actually on our recon mission because as previously established, I am a professional. And also, again, you’re not the boss of me.”
Jason ignored her Eye Roll With Extra Emphasis, and instead just held up his phone to Text With Extra Emphasis, as he read along with what he was typing.
“By the way babe, we have to make out extra hard tonight,” he said, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth while he dragged out his dictation with the kind of focus that usually led to Bruce asking why he couldn’t apply as much intensity to training as he did to pettiness. “Cass has suddenly decided she can dictate terms to me and I need to shut that shit down ASAP, so thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. Smoochies and other gay stuff to the best boyfriend ever.”
Jason frowned as a response pinged back seconds later.
TheCatsMeow: ....the things I put up with for the sake of your weird family dynamics.
TheOnlyRobinThatRocks: Yeah, yeah. You’re a saint among were-panthers. Must you mock? Why can’t you just tell me I’m pretty instead?
TheCatsMeow: Sorry. Let me try again. OMG you’re so pretty Jase how did I get so lucky xoxo.
TheOnlyRobinThatRocks: No. Its too late. It feels forced and unbelievable now. You’ve ruined it forever.
TheCatsMeow: Got it. From now on I will only tell you that you’re repulsive and hideous.
TheOnlyRobinThatRocks: I’m breaking up with you.
TheCatsMeow: But after I help you with your mission tonight.
TheOnlyRobinThatRocks: Obvsly. I’m a professional. Why do people keep forgetting this?
TheCatsMeow: And also the making out to spite your sister.
TheOnlyRobinThatRocks: Yeah we should do that first too. I mean we already penciled it in.
