rewatching utena for the first time in about a decade and it is truly the funniest show ever.
we just finished the black rose arc, the last ep was truly a mindfuck. mikage completely succumbing to his delusions and unable to tell memory from reality, finding out he's been frozen in time for decades, mamiya has been dead all this time and anthy was pretending to be him. mikage is defeated and expelled/set free from ohtori, the existence of his life and of nemuro memorial hall wiped from everyone's memory.
then the following episode is a recap. and maybe you're thinking, whew, this arc was a doozy, it'd be nice to have it broken down into a nice, digestible 20 minute episode that'll really help me understand and process things! AND THEN THE ENTIRE RECAP EPISODE IS ABOUT NANAMI AND HER GOOFY SHENANIGANS OH MY GOD.
'wait so what's real and what isn't, how long was mikage trapped there was anthy the one orchestrating this all along--' 'HEY REMEMBER WHEN NANAMI WAS BEING CHASED BY SURFING ELEPHANTS IN INDIA???' it is so POINTEDLY and MALICIOUSLY unhelpful, it is truly the most king shit I've ever seen. it's broadcasting the clearest message possible that if you went into rgu expecting it to explain anything to you, it's not gonna happen. you are getting elephants instead. fuck you.
(this post was brought to you by @not-the-blue who is watching the show with me for the first time and has no idea what's going on, i just turned her frustrated-amused rant into a post❤️)

(Ramble below, not very structured)
I'm watching episode 9 again and losing my mind over the scene where Saionji fucking kidnaps Anthy because. I forgot how actually upset Anthy is?
Like. The way Anthy is fucking shouting as Saionji drags her up to the arena. The way she tries to physically stop him from getting in! What the fuck!
The way he just bats her out of the way and we get a shot of her from behind, kneeling on the ground with a hand to her face, but we don't see her face. That's... not normal! Most of the time when Anthy gets slapped in the early series, we get a shot of her afterwards with a bruise.
Here, we don't see her face. But we can see that she's shaking, and the first-watch assumption would be that she's crying, but... I'm not inclined to view it that way given everything that happens after.
The way I read it, Anthy is pissed.
The next time we see Saionji, he's face down in the water. How did he get there? We don't see. On a first viewing, one might just assume that's a negative reaction the arena has to being opened at an inappropriate time- along with all the crazy shit going on inside the arena once Utena gets there. But given Anthy is later shown to have more control over what the arena does than she lets on, and noticeably does her flashiest magic (the sword pull, the transformations) in or on her way to the arena, I think Anthy is behind almost all of that. And I'd say she's also behind the Saionji-almost-drowning bit. You guys might remember the half-joking drawing I made of Anthy, uh, dragging Saionji into the water by his hair, and while she might not have gotten as hands-on about it as that drawing suggests, I still think she's responsible.
So, like... why?
Why does this piss her off so much? I mean, sure, Saionji absolutely has it coming, but Anthy's been through worse. She clearly doesn't like Saionji and messes with him whenever possible, but to attempt murder and then set up an elaborate illusion designed to upset him as much as possible is... a little extreme. I don't think she even goes that far with Nanami, unless you consider the elephants to be legit murder attempts (which I do not- I think that was Anthy scaring Nanami, not trying to kill her, because I can't believe Nanami would survive that many encounters with elephants that actually wanted her dead).
I think the answer is that, for all the shit she takes from the duelists, Saionji is one of the only ones who breaks this many rules. Not only does he mistreat her when they're engaged- something she's used to, but that seems to be at least frowned upon, if not outlawed (given Touga felt the need to call a "stop hitting your girlfriend" meeting in episode 1)- he mistreats her afterwards. He refuses to let her go, he acts as if she still owes him something. And then he goes and pulls this. He kidnaps her, takes her to the arena without a duel scheduled, and tries to enter the arena- all things that are against the rules of this stupid game that Anthy, however much she knows it is a stupid game, lives her whole life around. And he tells her End of the World is responsible, which Anthy knows isn't true, because if Akio were planning something this batshit, she'd know about it! Of course she's angry, this goes well beyond the threshold of nonsense her job usually entails!
I don't know if she was aware of Touga's plan to play the hero for Utena and get Saionji expelled- if so, she obviously wasn't aware of all of it. The freakout on the way up to the arena is too intense for me to read it as anything but genuine. She's shaking with effort trying to stop Saionji from opening the gate. Things do fall perfectly into place for Touga to get between Saionji's sword and a defenseless Utena, but I honestly think Touga's plan may have been to just...
1) Impersonate End of the World and tell Saionji the castle is coming down, this will incentivize him to go up there and break the rules.
2) Tip Utena off that Saionji has kidnapped Anthy.
3) The castle doesn't come down, upsetting Saionji and heating up his inevitable confrontation with Utena enough that he tries to kill her and Touga can step in at the perfect moment.
4) Profit.
I don't think he knew Anthy was going to Do That. For one, the plan was to get Saionji expelled, not kill him- Anthy's stunt there could have ruined the entire plan if Utena hadn't dragged Saionji out of the water. And Touga is drinking the "Rose Bride doesn't have feelings" juice. Evidently, he doesn't put two and two together after this, because he's still beating that drum in episode eleven!
I don't think Akio knew much about this either. Touga is telling him about it over the phone, so Touga didn't tell him, and Anthy didn't know, so she couldn't have either. I think he probably got woken up in the middle of the night by all the chaos and had to dial Touga up after the fact to ask him what the fuck was going on.

I watched Jane's a Car from Nightmare time and I was surprised to not found any Utena crossover with it so I had to do it myself

So, I finally watched the Utena movie after making my sibling watch the show with me. We both loved it and there was something that I pointed out while watching that I wanted share with tumblr because I feel like this crowd would appreciate it.
So, spoilers, in the movie Utena becomes a car. After she becomes a car Anthy gets inside and starts driving, and as they go along, they take some damage and the first thought I had while watching this part of the film was this:
The crumple zone is an integral part of a safe vehicle. The damage sustained in an impact that causes it to crumple absorbing a lot of the force that could harm the person inside. This has become more well known because of how the shitty Tesla tank cars are death traps (or at least that’s why I know about it).
So all I could think as I was watching Anthy drive Utena, taking damage along the way, Is how every dent and scar on that car was keeping Anthy safe. Even when she wasn’t human and wasn’t in control, Utena was protecting her. She was built to protect Anthy.

Currently thinking about how Touga is terrible but he's also a teenage abuse victim who sees becoming like his abuser as the only way to reclaim some modicum of power and thus agency. And Saionji loving him so profoundly that he arguably comes back into Ohtori because of him, but having no tools to express that love in any healthy way, both due to his own emotional ineptitude and buying into the most surface level trappings of toxic masculinity (physical domination, anger, violence, competition) AND due to not knowing what to do to ever reach Touga. Touga is in a way a parallel to Anthy, in that they're in a sense Akio's longest victims, but the way the system everyone is in convinces Touga that the poison he's swallowing is what props him up above other victims, particularly women, means he's happy to remain a cog in the carousel.

Totally wild to me that people watch Revolutionary Girl Utena and project onto Anthy in the exact same way people in the show project onto Anthy, despite the show pretty explicitly repeatedly warning viewers not to do that.
(RGU spoilers incoming)
Tumblr media
Like i feel like there's the "Anthy just wants to be free, i love her" camp and the "Anthy is a doormat and a traitor i hate her" camp and like, to me, both of those miss the mark completely.
I don't claim to understand her - i don't think anybody besides herself really does - and I've only watched the show once so there's definitely stuff I'm missing. But.
Anthy is a complex character. She's a victim of severe and prolonged abuse who seems unsure of what she truly wants, while at the same time having a strong sense of duty, and maybe the sense that she brought her fate on herself. She's jaded and resigned after spending (presumably) many many years replaying the same charade. It's unclear how she feels about Akio but she serves him basically single-mindedly, mostly making decisions that (as far as i can tell/remember) further his interests, and not usually making decisions when Akio's interests aren't involved. She has very little agency and it's difficult to tell when what she does is driven by her own desires or her role/Akio's plan. What i can remember off the top of my head that the show tells us is pretty much unequivocally all on her are these events:
Her original protection of Dios
When she daydreams about Utena having tea with her
When she tries to commit suicide
When she leaves the school
That's not very much!!!!! Like it's hard to remember but throughout the show you don't actually get to know Anthy very well! Her carefully crafted facades are very convincing. Utena's projection onto her is convincing. But it's not clear who Anthy actually is.
She's a mystery, an enigma, an untrustworthy witch, a victim of abuse, a young girl who doesn't know what she wants, and the axis around which the entire show revolves (get it? Revolve? Revolution? No?).
Anthy isn't a "traitor," she was serving Akio's interests all along, and as the audience we, like Utena, misjudged her level of commitment to Utena vs her commitment to Akio, and the level to which she's resigned to her awful fate.
Anthy isn't a doormat, she's an abuse victim. She's not two-faced by nature, she's being exploited. Anthy isn't the damsel in distress, she was literally the heroine from the beginning. She made a brave and selfless choice and faced the consequences, and she survived. Utena didn't save her like a gallant prince, Utena broke the cycle, opening the door that allowed Anthy to dismantle it by leaving her gilded cage.

Anyways she's an amazing character, love her or hate her, and this show is going to simmer in my brain for years

[I.D.: digital fan art of akio, utena, and anthy from revolutionary girl utena, set against a background of roses with a spotlight shining on them from above. utena is in the very center, holding the sword of dios. on her left and slightly in front of her is akio, and to her right and slightly behind her is anthy. akio has a hand on utena’s chest, and is leaning in to kiss her with his eyes closed. utena’s mouth is wide open and so are her eyes, looking forward to the camera and slightly to the right, toward anthy. anthy has her eyes closed with a sad, weary expression. her arm goes under utena’s arm and grips the sword right before the tip. the other arm firmly holds utena’s other wrist, and head rests against utena’s shoulder. / end I.D.]
happy pride heres an utena based on that one anne hathaway image
