Carnage re-write P1
So I woke up today with Words in my head and instead of assisting with any of my ongoing fics my brain has decided to re-write Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage ://
So I guess we’re doing that. (Originally a quick outline; cleaning it a bit and posting on Feb 6 for @symbruary's Fix-It day)
Post 1/??
Previous / Next
The movie had pretty effects and a decent soundtrack and some good action, but what it lacked was the heart and comedy of the first film (and the good good deep Venom voice, why is he so squeaky and annoying now??? (T o T) )
I’m not a comedy-writing person, and I’m not gonna be doing an actual fic or screenplay for this, so I’ll be keeping to the heart part. What gives a piece its heart I thnk are its emotional throughlines. Each character and relationship having their own story where they change from how they are at the start to how they are at the end, and having that story be concretely present and observable as the movie/book goes on.
There were hints of that in Venom2 but a lot of them fell flat, didn’t go anywhere, or didn’t have a satisfying change.
For example: both Eddie and Venom are frustrated with their relationship for X reasons. They fight, they separate, they do things on their own, but when they come back together they haven’t resolved any of the reasons that they broke up in the first place. Everything’s just magically better for no reasons and we are supposed to intuit that they are good for eachother and that they have improved as partners but we never really see that happen. Just a forced capitulation on Eddie’s part and the same traumabonding and extreme circumstances that made them work as a team in the first movie.
Another thing that sucked was how they dumped the uniqueness of certain characters and plots and emotional beats from the first movie to retread the same old tropes from everything else. Dan was unique and widely beloved in my parts of the fandom for not being a jealous jerk. He admired Eddie’s journalistic work, he dropped his dinner to do doctor work without complaint, he trusted Anne, and he didn’t fall into the stupid romcom plots even when Anne brought them up. Focused, intelligent, useful, kind, caring. A breath of fresh air. Entirely unlike how he acted in the second movie.
So let’s fix that.
Situation at the start of the movie:
Eddie is depressed, frustrated, and stressed. He is not used to being the self-control in a relationship, and is trying really hard to keep to his morals. He also needs to make enough money to keep them in food and home. He is lonely; he misses Anne and Maria and people in general since a large part of his solution to Venom is isolating them in their apartment so that they don’t eat people and don’t look crazy in public. He is spending all of his time and energy either trying to do work or keeping Venom entertained, controlled, and fed. He also might need some mood-stabilizing meds, he seemed heckin ADHD and/or autistic in the first movie.
Venom is stressed, bored, and starving. It is not used to not being able to do whatever it wants (bar keeping its head down around other symbiotes higher on the pecking order), it is not used to having to cooperated with a host, it doesn’t understand Eddie’s morals, it doesn’t understand Earth, it doesn’t understand money, it doesn’t understand human relationships and society. It needs higher quality food (mammalian, more variety, more human-specific chemicals since it’s bonded with a human), it needs enrichment, it needs to understand more about what its new situation is.
They both need to communicate and understand eachother and learn to find a balance that will get them both what they need. They also need a support system and an income stream.

Venom: Let There Be Chocolate! is now open for prompts
As promised, I am running a mid-year Venom fest in the lead up to World Chocolate Day, July 7 2022.
This is a Harlequin challenge
That is, you must riff on a blurb from a Harlequin (or similar) romance. You can interpret the blurb you've chosen any way you like, from a straight re-write of the story with Venom characters, through to the wildest thing you can think of. Set it in space. Set it in the past. Make them pirates. Make them space pirates! As long as it has Venom and/or Eddie Brock as a main character (but they don't have to be in the romantic scenario), you're good to go.
Any type of fanworks are welcome.
You can post your Harlequin (or similar) prompts:
On the AO3 community: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/Venom_Let_There_Be_Chocolate_2022/profile
Or on the main V:LTBC post on the Sybrock Dreamwidth community: https://symbrock.dreamwidth.org/32076.html
Or you can use the tag Venom: Let There Be Chocolate here on Tumblr, and I’ll periodically check and add any prompts to Dreamwidth.
The timeline:
Saturday 21 May to Sunday 26 June - prompts can be posted to the AO3 V:LTBC community, or to the Symbrock Dreamwidth community, or using the Tumblr Venom: Let There Be Chocolate tag.
Wednesday 6 July - submissions are due.
Thursday 7 July - works in the AO3 collection are opened for viewing.
Thursday 14 July - creators are revealed and works can be crossposted anywhere else you like.
Below the cut are a bunch of prompts to get things started. If you want to use one, you can post it over on AO3 and claim it.

Will their still-powerful connection be strong enough to bring back the memory of their once-perfect love…?

Tragedy made Travis Thompson the guardian of three orphaned children—and determination leads him to do whatever it takes to keep the kids out of foster homes. It only takes a single kiss for Cliff Dempsey to realise the woman in his arms is someone entirely different...and completely irresistible. To protect Ruby’s secret, Cliff maintains her ruse, but soon the lines between duty and desire begin to blur. Ruby and Cliff know they have a once-in-a-lifetime connection, but will they have a chance to let their love grow?

Mackenzie must rely on Delta Force soldier Aaron Hanning to protect her. Aaron doesn’t want to be anyone’s hero, but with danger stalking them, they’ll both have to make a daring choice.
Silver Lining
Maggie Osborne
As scruffy and rootless as the other prospectors searching for gold in the Rockies, Low Down wanted nothing in return for nursing a raggedy bunch through the pox. But when pressed to reveal her heart's wish, she admits, "I want a baby." Not a husband, not a forced marriage to the proud man who drew the scratched marble and became honor bound to marry her. To be sure, Max McCord was easy on the eyes, but he loved another woman and dreamed of a different life. Yet they agreed to a temporary marriage that could end only in disaster. But can this strange twist of fate lead to the silver lining that both have been searching for?
The Gift
Julie Garwood
A child bride, Sara Winchester had grown into a winsome beauty, joyfully anticipating the day when her husband Nathan, Marquess of St. James, would return to claim her heart at last. Charmingly innocent, she dismissed the ancient feud that divided Nathan's family from her own...and she was totally unaware of his past exploits as the notorious pirate, Pagan. The man who now stood before her was perplexing, arrogant and powerfully handsome...a warrior-gentleman whose gentle touch aroused her to the wildest, deepest pleasures of love.
Nathan had never bared his soul to any woman, but he was soon utterly beguiled and exasperated by Sara's sweet, defiant ways. Aboard his ship, the Seahawk, she was brave, imperious and determined to win his heart completely—yet upon their return to England, her love would be sorely tested as a vile conspiracy tried to tear them apart. With their future at stake, they would discover the true destiny of their passion...for all time!
A Taste Of Heaven
Alexis Harrington
Libby Ross fled betrayal and heartbreak in Chicago when she headed to Montana expecting a new start, children, and a good place to raise them. Instead she learned that she has been duped again by the cowboy who made her his mail-order bride. He died, leaving her with no money, nowhere to go, and no resources but her own ingenuity. Then she learned about the Lodestar Ranch and its owner, Tyler Hollins.
Besides a lifetime of painful memories, Tyler had his hands full with immediate problems. Half his cattle were lost during the worst winter on record and his cowhands were about to quit if he couldn’t find a decent cook. Libby Ross fit the bill. She had never seen a man so attractive with such a sour disposition. But she sensed desire behind the wall Ty erected to keep everyone at a distance . . . a wanting so fierce it nearly broke her heart.
They locked horns from the outset, but they could fight each other, or fight together to see their dreams come true . . .
Texas Destiny
Lorraine Heath
She was his brother's wife...
Arriving on the Fort Worth train, Miss Amelia Carson, mail-order bride, had never met Dallas Leigh, the Texan she promised to marry. The tall cowboy at the station wasn't Dallas. He was Houston, Dallas's brother, sent to escort her on the rugged three-week trek to the ranch where Dallas waited. Brought up in war-ravaged Georgia, Amelia thought Dallas's letters made Texas sound like heaven, a place for her dreams to grow with the right man beside her.
And his only love...
By all appearances, Houston Leigh would hardly be considered the "right man." The war he survived had scarred him inside and out, and he was little competition for his handsome brother. But from the moment Houston met Amelia, he knew she possessed the courage this wild land needed. She had eyes that could see past his wounded face to his soul. And he would fight any man—except his brother—for her heart. Now he and Amelia were riding down dangerous trails, sleeping under the stars, and God help them, they were falling in love.
Eye of the Beholder
Ruth Ann Nordin
Mary Peters despairs that she will never marry. At nineteen, she has no prospects of finding a husband, so she takes matters into her own hands and becomes a mail-order bride. When she arrives to Omaha, Nebraska to meet the man she's due to marry, he takes one look at her homely appearance and rejects her.
But fate has other plans for Mary. Dave Larson happens to be nearby and thinks she will make a good wife. Though she is stunned that someone as handsome and as kind as Dave would ask her to marry him, she accepts. She knows that this marriage will not bear the fruits of love. Love, after all, is for beautiful women. Isn't it?
His Accidental Countess
By Annie Burrows
From abducted…
…to betrothed!
To stop an unsuitable elopement, Tobias Spenlow bundles his ward’s intended bride into his carriage – only to discover he’s made a terrible mistake. The woman is actually innocent governess Miss Dorothy Phillips – whose reputation he’s unintentionally ruined! The only way to right this wrong is for the Earl to wed her. She might have accidentally become his Countess, but their consuming attraction has him courting her in earnest…!

Thoughts for venom 2’s second trailer:
(I watched it twice and this is in no particular order iykyk ig)
“I need you to come out. Right. Now.” And venoms just like naw fam “that is a RED one” Lmao what are they classified by colors????
“I’m sorry I don’t know what came over me” *punches Eddie again*
No wonder Eddie punches him back cuz — Good news! They’re not abusive! Eddie is trying to be patient! Thank god that makes me feel so better after the leaked trailer
(I’m guessing Eddie punches Venom cuz he loses patience and so Venom just… plasters Eddie to the ceiling)
Please why is Eddie saying “you need to control your aggression” so hot
Also I have no idea what Venom is saying half the time please I’m a hopeless auditorial I need my subtitles
Okay bear with me but I’m guessing Cletus having some of Eddie’s ‘not blood’ is what spawns Carnage?
Ok but where does Cletus go if Carnage opens… her? Their?? Torso up for the bullets to go through
Venom saying “OH YEAH” gives me serotonin
“I’ll let you eat everybody” *John Mulaney voice* and he said, you know, like a liar!
Tl;dr? My overall thoughts:
LMAO and WHAT THE FUCKWHATTHEFUCKWHATTHEEVERLOVINGFUCKITYFUCKERSFUCK

I know we're all assuming that Eddie and Venom are keeping the chickens for Vee to eat, but what if they are more there as temporary hosts for Venom when he Eddie needs some "alone time".
Just imagine Eddie getting frustrated about something and saying "okay, that's enough. I need to be alone."
And Venom whines in his deep, growly voice, Ah, Eddie no...
"Yes," Eddie says firmly, grabbing a chicken. "Just for a little while, love."
And, grumbling all the while, Venom transfers to the chicken.
I could call the story, Chickening Out.

Carnage Rewrite Part 3
First Previous/Next
Next are the major and side characters. Obviously we have Dan and Anne and Mrs Chen, but we’ve also got the partygoers, the police (specifically Mulligan), the Ravencroft Institute people, various inmates at both the prison and the institute.
My main desires going in to watch Carnage were that Anne and Dan remained safe and together and in character, with no jealousy/breakup plots related to their relationship. I got Some of those, but let’s see if we can knock it out of the park.
Dan: we’re gonna drop the jealousy and freaking out plot cause it sucks. Instead Dan will remain Dan the Man from the first movie. Open, trusting, kind, intelligent, competent, focused, caring, solutions-motivated, calm, and immune to romcom plots. He wants: to do right by Anne, to marry Anne, to get to know Eddie and check up on his health, for everyone to be safe, and to do his job. If we want to give him character flaws, make him somewhat clueless/naive/out of his depth for some subtle social and/or romantic subtexts and morally grey/black situations/people, and entirely lacking in street smarts. Dude’s upper class and maybe we’ll throw some autism at the wall cause it’ll stick.
Anne: remains Anne from the first movie. Focused, competent, intelligent, decisive, forward-thinking. She wants: for her relationship with Dan to work, to marry Dan, for Eddie to be okay, to rebuild a stable friendship with Eddie, to have a normal life, to do her job, for the danger to be dealt with and no longer threatening her and hers. She has a grudge agains Eddie for going behind her back, hurting her, and keeping things from her from the first movie that was never resolved and was instead reinforced by him not telling her that the symbiote was still alive at the end. She’s trying to let him back into her life but he’s still keeping secrets from her. The whole jailbreak scene in the movie was stupid, too. It outed Eddie as Venom and Anne as an accomplice and failed to use her lawyer smarts as anything but an entry device. Pathetic, when they could have broken IN and kidnapped him instead.
We can then have the following arcs: Dan builds a solid friendship with Eddie. Dan gets the confidence to propose. Anne says yes to Dan. They both provide specialized help that Eddie and Venom need. Anne and Eddie Talk and they come to an understanding about honesty and respect. Eddie agrees to rely on Anne and Dan for friendship, emotional support, logistics, and backup. Venom learns the Power of Friendship and levels it up with Anne and Dan.
So let’s start the movie a bit earlier than we do in canon and have the opening scene instead be Dan having a meal with Eddie because Eddie is important to Anne and Dan admired his moral crusades and journalistic pieces, so he’s trying to get to know him. Maybe he’s nervous and wants to propose to Anne, but isn’t sure he’s ready or if she’ll say yes.
Eddie can then be awkward as heck and sad and jealous and need to leave before Venom eats Dan. Itgives us an opportunity for the whole “get Anne back for ourselves” argument without letting Eddie blow up at Anne and ignore her agency and friendship, instead fighting against his own hurt and desires to say “no” to Venom and reluctantly declare that Dan is their friend and they don’t eat friends (or that Anne is their friend and Dan is HER friend, depending) This will tie into our Themes, and let us tie the chickens into said themes later.
Mrs Chen: I honestly don’t know what do do with Mrs Chen yet. She’s obviously going to have a spot in this movie, as she is somewhat of a fan favourite and a big part of Venom’s support system, both because she is clearly the major chocolate contributor and because she’s one of the few people that knows that it exists so that it can actually come out and interact. Other than that I’m not sure what kind of arc and influence she should have here. In canon she got a support role as the person that V would turn to in a crisis after the party, and she could hold that function here too, but she needs something of her own to add. Hit me in the comments with some ideas.
Sonny and Cher: The chickens are kind of just plopped into the movie withought much thought or follow-through. They KIND of touch on the key themes of nutrition, enrichment, and morality if you squint real hard, but we really need to double-down on that and pepper in references throughout the movie to really stick the landing. And obviously they don’t have their own arc in the movie, when they really could have. So, their arc: the chickens need enrichment, the chickens do not provide the correct type of food, the chickens are a metaphor for Venom gaining understanding of community and morality (if we get Disney in here we can have V watch a certain movie and have a “fish are friends not food” reference) and we can foreshadow Carnage by having one of the eggs hatching (one of the chickens is secretly male I guess; this could also be pulled on for hints at Symbrock if desired)
The partygoers: Venom at the party was fun, but it was kind of flat and all over the place. It was theme-adjacent, but again it just didn’t land. What we need the partygoers to be is a tie into community, enrichment, and communication. They also accept Venom far too readily, we never get any kind of “what the heck is that thing” scene, which deprives us of opportunities for V to either lie about it to try to keep secret or reveal itself to be fully accepted. He complains about Eddie and declared he’s coming out of the closet, but it’s clear that the audience does not really understand what that means (and that the symbiote has no clue what that phrase would mean to THEM) and we do not focus in enough on any of the partygoers for them to really connect and be individual characters themselves. More importantly, this is such a missed opportinuty for learning and growth re: Venom and Eddie’s relationship. We don’t see any reason why Venom couldn’t just stay with one of the partygoers, or why it actually should/wants to be with Eddie, other than a bit of whining about missing him. And we don’t get anything constructive that it could bring to the table when it reunites with him. So to have the scene be important to their journey we need to build those things in.
The temporary hosts: These were nothing people. There was no comparison/contrast to Eddie, there was no information on what makes a good or bad host in general or for V specifically, we get no reason for why sometimes a new host is in bad shape and sometimes it’s fine (the new guy before Mrs Chen v Mrs Chen herself). This sucks, so we’ve definitely got to build on that more.
The police/detectives: I don’t remember them at all. If they’re gonna be in this movie as more than mooks then they need something to them I suppose, but like with Mrs Chen I got nothing. Thoughts?
The other inmates (asylum or prison): Now here we have an interesting opportunity to compare/contrast how Eddie & V treat their friend group and how Cletus & Carnage do. This will tie into our community and morality themes, make the parallels between the two clearer, give us a chance for some backstabbing or lack of support as a consequence of ill treatment, and allow Venom to make some of his reasons for liking Eddie and being on the antihero side clear. Friends are Not Food.
The lead psych people in Scream’s asylum: These people sucked? Was there a reason that her treatment and all were so terrible? Maybe it’s building up for something in the future, but dang. Does NOT help with the huge amount of ableist and anti-mental-healthcare biases in fiction and irl. Can we do something with that? It could easily end up a parallel to Venom’s own situation, being cooped up and lacking enrichment and all, if we kept at least some of the mistreatment. But it could also have been a decently GOOD situation for her that Cletus takes her out of, and then she and the other inmates could bring the concept of enrichment to the table for Venom to describe what it’s lacking. Unsure which would be more compelling, what do you guys think?
