CRASH!
The ear piercing sound shook the whole cabin. You and Nat jolted awake. You jumped out of bed and ran to her.
“What the hell was that?” You asked, shocked.
“Good question.” Nat said. Her brows were furrowed.
She grabbed her pistol out of the drawer and headed downstairs.
You slowly followed behind her, unarmed. You kinda wished you had something on you but knew the Avengers would keep you safe. Sam came up beside you and pushed you behind him. You held onto his waist and followed him down the stairs. The cabin was dark with light only just beginning to shine through the windows.
“It’s okay!” Thor called from the front yard.
Nat relaxed and so did Sam. You pushed past them in anticipation. You now remembered what this was. You stepped out onto the wooden front porch and saw everyone else standing in a semicircle in front of Thor.
The sunrise painted the sky and the birds were beginning to wake up as the crickets were dying down. Thor held a long rectangular box in his arms. It was silver with a lavender ribbon.
“What is this all about?” Tony piped up. “And look. It left a big patch in the grass. Now I get to hear about that from the owners.”
“It’s a gift for me. From Heimdall.” You said, walking up to Thor.
Everyone looked around surprised. Tony and Steve exchanged looks.
Thor handed you the box with a smile. You took it in your arms. It was a little heavy. You placed it on the ground and dropped on your knees in front of it, beginning to slowly undo the ribbon. You felt excitement and nervousness. What could this be?
Everyone held their breath in anticipation as well. Peter’s curiosity pulled him closer. Bucky’s protectiveness pulled him closer as well, yet he was excited for you to receive a gift from another realm.
The silky ribbon fell to the grass. You looked up at Thor and he gave you a reassuring nod.
Your fingertips gripped the sides of the box, and you lifted it up.
Your eyes fell onto a shining sword. This was one of the most beautiful objects you had ever seen. The blade was shiny and double-edged with a pointed tip. The hilt (handle) was cruciform. The grip was wrapped in a leathery material and the pommel had a large emerald in the middle.
“Woah.” You whispered. You gripped the handle hesitantly as if you didn’t want to disrespect something so beautiful. You lifted it up and a glare of sunlight hit the blade. You saw your reflection in the blade and Thor standing behind you with a proud smile. The sword was about 26 inches long and it fit you perfectly. You looked down in the box and there magically appeared a scabbard (the covering for a sword blade) made out of the same leathery material on the handle. It had a note attached to it.
   To defend the defenseless. -Heimdall
Wanda tilted her head and knelt next to you.
 ‘‘I’m sensing something.” She said.
“This sword… It’s enchanted.” Thor confirmed.
This made Tony, Steve, Bucky, and even you, a little nervous.
“Enchanted… Is it safe?” Bucky asked.
The red magic appeared on Wanda’s right hand as she gently touched yours that was wielding the sword.
“Only if it’s in her hands.” Wanda said with a smile. She was amazed.
Peter dropped to his knees next to you, observing your sword closer.
“Allow me to explain.” Thor announced. “This enchanted weapon… Is one of a kind and over a thousand years old. I’ve gazed at it since I was a child. It chooses its owner. Only someone pure and in need of it can wield this sword. If anyone else tries to use it, it becomes dull and flimsy. It won’t cut anything. In the right hands, it’s supposed to be perfect. When Y/n came to Asgard, the sword sensed her presence. Heimdall says, it glowed. It chooses you, Y/n.”
With that, the sword began to glow a light purple and it subsided.
Everyone gazed at you proudly. You smiled and a feeling of responsibility came over you.
“I’m at a loss for words.” You swallowed. The sword sung as you placed it in its scabbard. Then in its box. You grabbed the box, stood up, and looked at the ground as you walked towards the cabin, feeling all eyes on you.
“Why me? There must be a mistake.” You thought to yourself.
You laid in bed thinking about your gift. You were unable to go back to sleep, so you decided to get up for the day. You got ready and before you left the room, you looked at the box again.
“Just one more look before I leave.” You thought to yourself.
You opened the box again. Your heart stopped. The sword was now the size of a pocket knife!
  “THOR”’ You cried!
Thor arrived at the doorway within the minute.
  “What’s the matter, Princess?”
“Look!” You held up the knife.
“So you can travel with it!” He chuckled.
“How do I get it to be big again?”
  “You will it to.”
You nodded. “This is just… so weird.”
“I envy you. I always wanted it for myself. But you deserve it. I hope I get to see you use it one day.” Thor quipped with a smirk.
  “Oh… I couldn’t imagine hurting anyone…”
“What if there’s another invasion? You’d want it then.”
“You're right. I must say… just holding it I feel so safe. Like I can defend myself. I don’t need to hide behind anyone. I also feel like I can protect others. I love that feeling.”
Thor smiled and lifted you up in a hug. You left the sword in the box as Thor carried you out of the room.
“I’m so proud of you sweet Y/n. I know that sword belongs to you and when I’m not here, it gives me peace of mind knowing you have great protection, and now you can better defend yourself.” Thor said.
You hugged his neck tighter.
“When I am here though… “ He trailed off. “I’m not so sure you can defend yourself.”
“What do you mean?” You asked confused.
“You can’t protect yourself from me!” He teased, laying you on the ground in the middle of the hallway upstairs.
  “OH NO THOR COME ON!”
“MWAUHAHAHA!” Thor evilly laughed as he tickled all over your belly and sides.
You just fell into laughter, not trying so hard to fight back. You just loved Thor and you dreaded him leaving.
His large fingers roughly danced across your belly as you pushed at them yet you couldn’t manage to stop him as he tickled you. You just laid there and took it, laughing weakly. Thor chuckled and finally stopped, pulling you to your feet.
You blushed and playfully slapped his arm.
He ruffled your hair.
“Let’s go eat breakfast.”
“We’ve got to leave by 11:00am tomorrow.” Tony announced.
There were frowns across the table. You felt a twinge in your chest.
“Well, how are we going to spend our last day?” Pepper asked, a smirk on her face, already knowing the answer.
“Oh I don’t know…” Tony started. “We could relax, play a few card games, swim, ride a few rollercoasters. I don’t know.” He said nonchalantly.
You and Peter looked at each other with wide smiles.
“ROLLERCOASTERS?!” You and Peter shouted in unison.
“We’re leaving here around 10:30.” Tony smirked.
After breakfast everyone scrambled to get ready to go to the amusement park. This felt like the perfect way to spend your last full day. You knew you were going to have so much fun and not have to spend the day thinking about leaving.
You found yourself sitting on the living room floor playing chess with Peter, while Nat sat on the couch behind you, braiding your hair. You were patiently waiting to leave to go to the amusement park.
“Stay still, silly!” Nat said, a bobby pin in her mouth.
“Sorry.” You said, focusing on the game.
You made the last move as Peter cringed. You finally beat him!
“WOO HOO!” You cheered as Nat tied the elastic in your hair.
“Ugggh! Congrats.” Peter groaned. “First you get a space sword and now you win chess. That’s not fair.”
You stood up doing a stupid victory dance.
Peter tackled you down and you landed on his chest. You smiled down at him. Peter gazed into your eyes a second until you felt something snake around your side. You flinched and giggled as Peter grinned. You threw yourself to the ground next to him and began crawling away in an attempt to escape. Peter grabbed your ankle and pulled you to him. He trapped you in his legs as he tickled your foot. You squealed and thrashed but Peter just ignored you.
“PEHEHETER! I CAN’T TAHAHAKE IT!” You cried with laughter.
  “This is what you get!”
  “PLEASE STAHAHAP!”
Peter was surprised to hear that, so he let you go. You launched at him to attack but he brought you up onto his legs as he held your hands. You laughed.
“You can’t do anything up there, can you?” He teased.
You didn’t say anything, you just used one finger to lightly tickle his palm. This made his spidey sense go crazy.
  “Ahh!” He whined.
You laughed as he brought you back to the ground. You tackled him in a hug as he chuckled.
You blew a raspberry on his neck making giggles bubble out of his mouth.
  “Y/N/N! Plehehehease! Nohohoho!” He laughed.
Peter had goosebumps all over his arms. He tickled at your tummy making you squeal and fight to tickle his tummy back. Your fingers made contact with his tummy and he grabbed your wrist while his other fingers danced across your belly button. You were having a full on tickle fight and it was if you were both losing. You tickled harder and so did he.
“TRUCE!” You both shouted in unison, pushing each other away.
You both laid on the floor laughing.
“I am so excited to ride rollercoasters!” Peter said, his laughter subsiding.
“Me too! I’m ready to hurry up and go!”
“Get in the car then, you dorks!” Bucky said hovering over you both.
You smiled up at your dad. He pulled you up to your feet.
“Your hair looks cute.” He said sweetly.
  “Thank you!” You said.
You sat in the back with Steve. Sam and Bucky trapped Peter in between them so they could play the video game Tony had programmed onto the screens. You and Steve ignored their bickering. Nat and Thor rode with Wanda and Vis. Tony and Pepper were in the front as usual.
The drive was about an hour and a half. You and Steve talked about your new sword. You explained to him how it shrunk.
“Thor says I have to will for it to go back to its normal size if I need to use it. Whatever that means.”
“That’s really interesting. Let’s hope you don’t have to actually use it anytime soon.” Steve cocked an eyebrow with a smirk.
  “I just don’t understand…”
  “Understand what?” Steve asked.
  “Why it… chose… me.”
“Of course it chose you!” Steve said gently gripping your cheeks in his hand, causing your face to squish up. “I know you. You’ll only ever use it for good. You have a good heart and you care about other people.” Steve said proudly
You blushed. “You really believe in me?”
“Aww. I’ll always believe in you, kid.”
  “Thanks Steve.” You said.
Steve kissed your nose.
You laid your head on his shoulder.
Confidence built up in your chest. This sword did choose you. Maybe you weren’t meant to just be the young girl the Avengers saved. Maybe you were meant to take part in saving the world with them. Whatever that looked like. This felt like what you wanted to do with your life. Protect people.
“There it is!” Peter gasped, catching everyone’s attention.
You looked out the window to see the skyline of the amusement park. Rides soaring high in the air, rollercoasters with insane drops, and a free fall tower that made your stomach turn at just the thought of it.
“We have to go on that one first, Y/n!” Peter said excitedly.
“Yes! But we HAVE to sit in the very front!” You replied.
“She sounds like you.” Steve grumbled to Bucky, making him grin.
“You’re not going to throw up this time, are you Steve?” Bucky chuckled.
Steve rolled his eyes. Sam laughed too, having heard the story of the Cyclone.
It felt like forever for Tony to get a parking spot. Finally you all got out of the van and met up with the others, ready to go into the park together. Bucky lifted you up and put you on his shoulders. When you finally made it through checking and into the park, you and Peter scrambled to the nearest map to look for directions to the tallest, fastest coaster in the park.
The rest of the Avengers followed you through the park to the entrance of the ride.
Tony got the premium fast passes so you guys practically jumped on the ride. You and Peter sat at the very front like you planned. Bucky and Sam got in the seat behind you. To everyone’s surprise, Steve and Tony got on behind Sam and Bucky. You and Peter thought this was the funniest thing ever.
“Come on Thor, get on with me!” Nat said, pulling Thor towards the seat.
“Alright.” Thor said nervously. He wasn't sure what to think about this earthly contraption, but he was brave enough to give it a try.
Wanda made sure everyone was strapped in before she took her seat next to Vision even though the ride worker insisted he knew how to do his job.
The ride worker went through checking everyone and it felt eternity while you and Peter were leaned back taking deep breaths, trying not to sike yourselves out. You and Peter exchanged nervous/excited looks. Peter closed his eyes and he slowly slipped his hand in yours. You smiled to yourself and held his hand tight and that's when the ride pulled out. It went up the hill to the highest drop and you and Peter were giggling all the way up. You peaked through the seats behind you to see Sam had his eyes closed and looked scared to death while Bucky laughed at him.
“You’re literally The Falcon!” Peter teased.
“I’m in control of that!” Sam yelled.
“Here we go!” Peter shouted as you reached the top.
You were so high up you could see for miles and the whole park down below. A breeze blew in your hair. Peter put his hands up and you gripped the handle bar in front of you. You were suddenly slowly being pulled forward and you reached the very tip of the hill. Then the ride began to drop you straight down the steep track. Your stomach dropped as the intense speed rushed through your body and you and Peter screamed like no tomorrow. You finally reached the bottom of the hill and all you could do was laugh and scream as you got jerked around the twists and turns. You finally got the confidence to put your hands up with Peter. Wanda was laughing with Vision. Natasha was laughing at Thor who was screaming like a girl. Tony and Steve were both trying not to throw up, and Bucky was laughing at Sam who was spitting out profanities. The ride came to an end as it pulled back in.
  “FINALLY!” Sam shouted.
You and Peter cheered.
Steve and Tony groaned.
“THAT WAS AMAZING! AGAIN! AGAIN!” Thor shouted.
“Anything for you Thor!” The young starstruck workers said, sending the coaster out again.
“NO!” Steve, Tony, and Thor cried while everyone else celebrated.
“Put your hands up on the drop this time!” Peter urged you.
After having a blast on three more of the giant roller coasters, everyone decided they were ready to eat. You all got your food and sat at a few tables eating. You and Bucky shared a large Coke.
“We should ride the teacups after this!” Peter suggested, mouth full of french fries.
  “NO!” Everyone chorused.
  “Bad idea.” Steve laughed.
You and Bucky finished your food, waiting for everyone else (Thor) to finish eating. You were rambling to Bucky about your favorite rides so far.
“I’m glad you’re having fun!” He said sweetly.
“What should we ride next? I want to sit next to you on it!”
“Hmm. How about this one?” Bucky said, wiggling his eyebrows. He pointed at the scariest looking ride at the park. The 300 ft drop tower.
  “Oh…” You trailed off.
  “You scared?” Bucky teased.
  “No!” You fibbed.
  “Aww don’t be scared!”
  “I’M NOT!”
“Y/n/n! I know when you’re lying to meee!” Bucky said, gripping at your underarms, making your curl in on yourself.
You started to giggle as Bucky tickled your underarms. You instinctively pulled back but he had you trapped good.
“Why are you trying to move away from me? Huh? Oh! Does that tickle?”” Bucky teased ruthlessly.
  “N-nohohoho!”
“More lies?! You know what happens when you lie to me! You get tickle time! Is that what you want?” Bucky pulled you onto his lap and held his metal arm under your back as he shook your left rib cage with his free hand. You cackled and blushed, pushing at his hand that was too strong to fight off. Bucky chuckled and leaned down to your ear.
“Why are you fighting me? I thought you liked being tickled!” He whispered, making you absolutely die inside.
  “NO!” You shouted, embarrassed.
Bucky just buried his face in your neck and began blowing raspberry after raspberry while his hand repeatedly squeezed your side. Your laughter turned raspy and silent as you practically died of ticklishness in Bucky’s arms.
Bucky sat you up in his lap and acted like nothing happened while you caught your breath and fixed your hair.
“So mean!” You cried, smacking his chest.
Bucky just scrunched his nose at you before kissing your cheek. You couldn’t help but smile and butterflies found their way back to your stomach.
You rode many more rides, making sure you had the chance to sit next to everyone on at least one ride. Steve won you a giant stuffed wolf at the high striker. He also got his face painted and wore it proudly. You decided to get yours painted too, as Spider-Man. Once you were done, you tapped Peter’s back as he faced away from you. He turned around and gasped. He had no idea what you had picked.
“I love it!” He said, picking you up and spinning you around.
“Let me get a picture!” Wanda said, pulling out her camera.
You and Peter pressed your cheeks together and smiled. This is probably one of your favorite pictures ever taken.
Wanda had been eating cotton candy all day and definitely had a sugar rush. Thor had been eating all day, and didn’t seem to understand the concept of waiting in lines even with fast passes sometimes.
Tony had become the designated bag holder and constantly looking out to make sure Peter didn’t wander off. Nat was really enjoying this family time and she loved the big rides.
When you finally got on the teacups, you, Peter, Wanda, and Thor sat in one and were spinning it as fast as you could, laughing your heads off, while the rest just sat on the ride not even bothering to spin theirs while they relaxed and chatted, laughing at the four of you who would fly by screaming.
You rode the backwards roller coaster with Tony as you insisted on seeing his reaction. He held onto you and laughed his sweet laughter while you squealed at the backwards drop.
You rode the tall swings with Bucky. You both sat behind Peter and Sam and got in trouble for continuously kicking the back of their seat while waiting for the ride to start.
You sat between Steve and Natasha on the ship ride and Steve would place his hand on your chest when the ride would get to a really steep part to double make sure you wouldn’t fall out.
You and Wanda screamed as you went upside down on the loop de loop roller coaster.
There was one roller coaster that was indoors and was in the dark with flashing lights. You rode that with Thor and cried with laughter at his reactions.
You rode the old bumpy wooden roller coaster with Sam and he swore it was going to break.
There was a water ride that sat 8 people at a time and that was quite funny as you sat next to Peter and Natasha and would laugh your heads off when someone across from you would get splashed. Especially Sam and Bucky.
Finally, it was time for the last ride of the day. The one you’d been dreading. The drop tower. You sat between Steve and Bucky.
“You’re gonna be okay. I got you. Remember, you’re brave!” Steve reassured you.
You nodded as the worker pushed the lap bar in.
Bucky just chuckled at you and squeezed your thigh.
The ride went up and you were actually enjoying the view. It wasn’t new to you, because Peter had brought you up on skyscrapers before.
“Here we go!” Steve said, and with that the ride dropped making you scream while Steve and Bucky just laughed and laughed.
“Oh that was so scary!” You said as the ride slowed.
“That was underwhelming.” Peter said from next to Steve.
“Because you're used to this feeling.” Tony said. “But so am I… Didn't scare me either. Just nearly lost my sunglasses."
You climbed in the van, tired and face hot from the sunshine.
“Well, I say that was a great way to end the trip!” Pepper said from the front seat.
Everyone agreed. You and Peter raved about all the fun you had on the rides before you both ended up falling asleep on the way back to the cabin. You dreamt you were holding your shining sword on the rainbow bridge in Asgard. Thor and Loki were with you, teaching you how to use it. When you woke up, you were laying on Steve’s chest. He was also asleep. You pulled into the cabin ten minutes later and everyone climbed out of the van.
“I really want to cool off in the pool!” You said, running in to change into your swimsuit.
“I really want a cup of coffee.” Steve said tiredly. His hair was messy and Spider-Man face paint was smeared on his shirt.
Everyone was hanging out at the pool, swimming or chilling in the lounge chairs. You, Peter, and Thor were standing in a circle in the pool joking around.
“Well, this has been fun. I should be leaving here soon.” Thor said softly.
“How soon?” You and Peter asked in unison.
“The sun is setting, so it’s time.” He sighed. “My kingdom needs me to return.”
You felt your heart sink. You thought you wouldn’t have to say goodbye until tomorrow morning. Thor saw the sadness on your face and he brushed his thumb on your cheek. He got out of the pool and began drying off. He put his hand out to wield Mjolnir. You and Peter dried off as well and you put your cover up on. He got Mjolnir and his armor appeared back on his body. He went around saying his goodbyes.
Peter hugged Thor, trying not to cry. He and Thor had become close on this trip.
“Sharing a room with a god wasn’t so bad afterall.” Peter sniffed.
Thor ruffled his hair.
“I look forward to when I see you again, Peter.”
Everyone said their goodbyes, except you. You waited.
Thor turned to you and gestured for you to follow him out to the grass where he would leave.
“Princess…” Thor spoke softly, kneeling to your height.
You looked at the ground, trying your best to fight the tears welling up in your eyes.
“Hey.” Thor cooed, placing his index finger under your chin for you to look up at him.
“You are going to see me again, Y/n. I promise.”
  “Promise?”
“Promise.” Thor reassured, eyes soft. “Who else is going to teach you how to use your new sword, huh?”
Your eyes twinkled.
“You’re meant to be something great. Never forget that, Princess.” He said, almost having to hold back tears himself.
You stood there a moment, wracking your brain for what to say before he leaves. You couldn’t put how you felt into words. Only one sentence came close enough. You placed your hands on his shoulders and sighed.
  “I- I love you.”
You finally just let your tears flow.
Thor’s eyes danced with love and he smiled.
  “I love you, Princess.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck and squeezed him in a hug as he wrapped his strong arms around your torso. You sat there a minute before he finally stood up.
He stood back, Mjolnir in hand.
“You better not be gone too long! Come back as soon as you can!” You urged.
“...Anything for you, Princess.” Thor whispered, winking at you.
Even with teary eyes, you couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face.
And with that, he was gone.
You entered the quiet cabin while everyone was still outside. The AC made your feet cold on the wooden floor. You walked upstairs with heaviness in your heart. You entered you and Natasha’s room. You opened the closet to look at your dress Thor gave you and your sword. You picked up what was currently a knife and stood in front of the mirror. You were going to try to will it back to its original size. You stood in a steady stance and began to focus, until something shiny caught your eye in the mirror. You turned around and saw the golden cup with rubies on your bedside table. You placed your tiny sword on the bed and walked over to the cup. There was a note attached to it.
A little something to cheer you up, in case you missed me already. -Thor

You chuckled at the note and took a sip from the cup.
Y/n and Thor’s Memories
Suddenly there was a loud thundering noise and a crash outside. Peter’s eyes widened. You knew that sound. You and Peter raced out to the white front porch.
“Hello roommate! I am here to keep you company and join you all on your… What do you call it? Vacation! Yes! Hahaha!” Thor laughed, referring to Peter as his roommate.
“THOOOOR!” You screamed, running to his arms.He smiled brightly at you, lifting you up in the air before engulfing you in a big hug. You laughed with glee. You hadn’t seen him in what felt like forever.
“My sweet Y/n. I’ve missed you.” He said, kissing your cheek.
  “I missed you so much.”
“So uuuh… You’re going to be sharing the room with me?” Peter asked, shifting in his place, his hands resting awkwardly on his hips.
“Yes! Haha it’s going to be great!” Thor said, tossing his hammer under a tree.
Peter thought “Wow. Sharing a room with a god is pretty freaking awesome. But this might be a disaster.”
Thor rested you on his hip and carried you inside, following Peter.
You waited on the back deck, talking with Thor about his latest adventures when you heard a loud scream from inside, startling you both. It sounded like bloody murder. Both you and Thor leapt to your feet. Thor pushed you behind him and stuck his arm out. VVVWWRAAAUUUMM! Thor wielded Mjolnir in his right hand. It took you a second to realize the scream belonged to Peter. You were scared. You knew this vacation was too good to be true. Some kind of trouble would follow you all here and it would be ruined.
“YOU BURN!” Tony yelled from inside the house. You’d never heard him yell like that. You gripped Thor’s shirt tighter.
  “Th-Thor..” You whispered, shaking.
“Shh baby, I’ve got this.” assured Thor as he made his way toward the door.
Suddenly, a sprinting Peter pushed past him. “NOOOOOO!”
Tony followed after him… with a can of sunscreen. You felt as if you just caught your breath. Thor snatched Peter up by the back of his shirt.
“What is this madness?” Thor asked angrily.
“HE’S TRYING TO PUT SUNSCREEN ON ME!” Peter screeched.
“YOU BURN TOO EASILY. I hate to break it to ya Pete, but you’re not stronger than the sun!” Tony shouted, pointing directly at the sun.
You clutched your chest from the fear you had previously endured, but couldn’t help but start giggling.
“It has been a while since I’ve tickled Y/n.” Thor raised his eyebrow at you and a giant swarm of butterflies flooded your stomach.
“Go for it! She loves it!” Steve smirked.
  “NO I DON’T!” You defended.
Steve gave you that look and you gave him a shut up shut up shut up look.
“Yes! Get her, Thor!” Tony encouraged.
Thor smirked and slowly stood up. You started giggling nervously, and took off running toward the house. You ran so fast through the grass that your flip flops flew off. You could hear him coming toward you, and right when you reached the steps, he caught you. You let out a scream and he just laughed evilly. He carried you like a baby back to his seat while you pathetically tried to get away.
“What’s the matter, princess?” Thor asked as he walked across the grass.
  “Ihihihi aham scahahared!”
“Don’t be scared! I’m just spending time with my Y/n is all! I might make her laugh a bit!” Thor said in a terribly teasing tone.
“Ohohoho noooo.” You whined, super nervous and flustered.
He plopped down with you in his seat and held you while you braced yourself.
“This is a very nice fire, isn’t it.” Thor asked everyone casually, still holding you like a baby.
You looked up at him confused. Did he change his mind? He had a small smirk on his godly face and his blue eyes twinkled with mischief. Thor looked down at you and pretended to be shocked.
“Oh! Y/n! Haha I almost forgot! I was going to give you tickles!” He exclaimed and dug his wiggling fingers right into the middle of your tummy. Okay, THAT tickles.
You began howling with laughter and a huge smile spread across Thor’s face.
“Y/n loves tickles!” He exclaimed, still tickling your tummy as you were stuck in his arms.
You didn’t want to get away anyway, but you also did because of how much it tickled.
After a while of tummy tickling, he stopped and you caught your breath, a big smile on your face.
“On Asgard, we have different ways to tickle!” Thor began while you waited anxiously. “Do you know what it feels like to be pecked by a raven? Here, let me show you!” He teased as he began poking and wiggling each one of your ribs, while you squealed with laughter. He chuckled at you.
He continued tickling your ribs for a while until he stopped again.
“Oh and do you know what it’s like when a dragon breathes fire?” He asked.
You shook your head with a nervous smile.
“It’s like this!” He shouted before lifting you up, blowing multiple raspberries on your tummy. His raspberries were the most ticklish ones you’ve ever felt, and his beard added to it. Your laughter fell silent and he stopped again.
“Buck.. Steve… Thor wins.” You said catching your breath, referring to the question they asked you this morning. They both just laughed.
  “I win what?” Thor asked.
“Your raspberries tickle the most!” You said bashfully.
“They do?” Thor asked with a grin. “What about my knee tickles?” He began squeezing and scribbling on your knees and you went straight back to squealing with adorable laughter in Thor’s arms, failing to escape the tickling on your sensitive knees. He then began to squeeze your thighs and you laughed like crazy. It tickled so much you thought you might die.
“Tickle tickle tickle!” Thor taunted as he now began to dig into your underarms. You fell in and out of silent laughter.
“THOHOHOR! STAHAHAP! THAT TIHIHICKLES!” You shouted through your laughter. This was unbearable.
“It’s supposed to tickle, Y/n/n! I’m tickling you!” Thor said.
  “I CAHAHAN’T!” You wheezed.
Thor chuckled and had mercy on you while you caught your breath.
“Would you like for me to stop?” He asked, still laughing along with you.
You didn’t want to say “yes” and you didn’t have the courage to say “no,” so you just kept giggling.
“I’ll take that as a “no!”’ Thor grinned, before reaching down to scribble the bottom of your feet.
You laughed so hard that you had to get him to stop, so you reached up and tickled his neck. He laughed his low, handsome laugh.
“Hey! I’m the one tickling you!” He teased sweetly, before scribbling all over your neck and collarbones. He had tickled you so much that your laughter had become hoarse and he knew you had enough.
“Did that tickle?” He asked with a big smile, while gently tickling your belly button.
  “Yehehes!” You giggled.
“Good!” He said, ceasing his tickling and giving you a kiss on the cheek.
Suddenly, Thor burst through the door.
“Princess, you are hereby sentenced to grounding for running off!” He declared. “Young Peter has also been banished. I locked him in the closet.” He joked, as he dramatically stormed toward you.
You burst out laughing at him as he snatched you up, making sure to be careful with your leg, and threw you over his shoulder while you giggled.
“Thor. I need your help.” You said to the god who was currently relaxing in a hammock. He jumped to his feet.
“Anything for you, Princess!” He said in an up-beat tone, but his face fell when he saw yours.
“I want you to take me to Asgard. I want to go right now.” You almost demanded.
“Now? But what about the others? Wouldn’t you want to tell them?”
“All I need is you, Thor, please. You promised.” You began to cry.
Sorrow and confusion filled Thor’s eyes. He wasn’t sure this was the right thing to do, but he sighed and wielded Mjölnir.
  “Anything for you, Princess…”
Thor lifted you up and wrapped you tightly in his arms, lifting the magnificent hammer to the sky.
 “Heimdall!”
You clutched your chest in awe. In front of you stood the golden kingdom, and you stepped down onto the rainbow bridge. Tears filled your eyes.
“Thor… it’s more beautiful than I ever could’ve imagined. I don’t even deserve to be here.” You awed.
“Of course you do! I have always wanted to bring you here. I knew you’d love it.” He beamed.
“Love is an understatement.” You whispered in amazement, walking on the bridge towards the kingdom.
You and Thor were now sitting out on a balcony off the side of the castle. You both were lounging on a soft, dark purple couch with matching gold pillows, sharing a warm drink out of a fancy golden cup decorated with rubies.
“I think we should stay here forever, Thor.”
Thor smirked, taking the cup from you and setting it aside. “You play too much, Princess.” He growled, tackling you into the pillows, tickling your tummy.
You shrieked in surprise before being consumed in uncontrollable laughter. Thor laughed his low, handsome laugh as he tickled you. You blushed as his large hands wrapped almost all the way around your torso, digging his thumbs into the middle of your tummy.
“Ticklish Princess! That’s what you are!” He stated casually, looking down at you adoringly.
  “I AM NOHAHAHAT!”
“Now, now, why are you lying? Tell me!” He teased, slipping his hands under your arms.
Your laughter went up an octave. You tried to thrash around but Thor effortlessly held you in place. You tried to speak, but you couldn’t due to your laughter. Your cheeks and ears burned bright red. Thor couldn’t help but smile at you. He always adored you. You had grown up over the years, but this was something he knew you’d never grow out of.
“THOHOHOR! Nohohoho! Not there!” You shrieked as he wiggled his fingertips roughly (but always gently) into your ribs. You tried to turn on your side, but still, you were stuck.
“Why are you trying to protest? I know you love tickles!” Thor laughed.
You swore you turned like 100 shades redder.
“No! Thahahahat’s not true!!” You shouted through your laughter, flustered.
“Oh, it’s not? Okay, I’ll stop.” Thor said, letting you go and crossing his arms against his chest.
How dare he stop!
You stared at him with a shocked expression, a smile gracing your lips. He sat back, arms still folded, and a sly smirk on his face.
“Hey!” You giggled, scribbling your fingers against his chest.
“Haha! I knew you wouldn’t want me to stop.” He laughed, prying your hands away and latching his hands around your sides, squeezing.
Your bubbly laughter came back and eventually increased when Thor began fluttering his fingers around your neck. You scrunched your shoulders only to trap his fingers.
“Okahahhahay! Okahahay! I cahahan’t take ihihit!” You exclaimed, meaning it this time.
“But I thought you liked it!” Thor teased, tormenting your sensitive neck and collarbones.
“Nohoho!” Your laughter went silent and Thor knew to let up.
You caught your breath while you and Thor leaned back into the pillows facing each other.
Loki swung open a beautiful wardrobe and began shuffling through dresses. Thor began playing with your hair.
“We always wanted a little sister.” Thor admitted.
You smiled at yourself as you watched Thor braid your hair.
“This is the one.” Loki announced, holding up a dress that you couldn’t help but gasp at.
“For me?!” You asked.
Thor and Loki nodded. They left so you could put it on.
You twirled in front of the mirror in your floor length, long sleeved, lavender Asgardian dress. You felt like a princess.
“You look lovely!” Loki said with a clap.
 “Thank you, Loki.” You smiled.
“I’m glad you like it, because it’s yours, Princess.” Thor said.
“She had my permission. I wouldn’t have taken her if it wasn’t completely safe.” Thor added.
“You cannot honestly say that it was completely safe.”
“With me? I can honestly say that. If you think I would put Y/n in any harm-” Thor, angry, got very close to Steve.
You smiled at her and jumped to your feet in the middle of the living room in front of everyone, ready to tell them everything.
“SO. Thor lifted his hammer and the next thing I know-” You began excitedly, going into every detail, gushing over the experience.
Everyone smiled, eagerly listening, as you stood in your stunning purple dress telling them the story.
Thor leaned against the wall, beaming with pride. He really loved you and he was proud that he helped you and you were yourself again.
“I’m gonna restart it.” You said for the fifth time.
“I’m sure you’re doing a lovely job, Y/n.” Thor encouraged.
Suddenly, Tony stepped out on the porch. He was nearly ready and you could smell his cologne. You liked that smell.
“Hey Nat, you’ve got a call from Barton.” Tony said, holding up his phone.
“Oh okay, I’ll be right there. Thor, can you finish her hair, please?” She asked, stepping inside.
“Of course!” Thor said, standing up. Your progress on the new braid fell from his hair.
“Aww. That one was looking straighter!” You whined.
Thor chuckled and began running his fingers on the nape of your neck, collecting your hair. It made you shiver and scrunch your shoulders.
“Does that tickle?” He asked with a smirk.
You got butterflies and blushed, but you nodded.
“Now why doesn’t that surprise me?” He asked, sarcasm in his voice.
You rolled your eyes and let him finish your hair.
When he was done, he picked you up and threw you high in the air, making you shriek. He caught you and you giggled.
“Well, I was going to say we could have a fire tonight, but it looks like there’s a storm coming through the night.” Tony said, catching everyone’s attention.
“WOW. WAIT TO GO, THOR! WAY TO RUIN EVERYTHING!” You joked, making everyone laugh.
“Y/N Buchanan I will fight you in the middle of this restaurant, right here right now.” He threatened jokingly.
You gave him a challenging smirk.
Thor pulled you to the ground by surprise and laid you face up on his chest and held your arms above your head, and wrapped one of his legs around both of your legs.
“Natasha, if you’d like to tickle Y/n, now is your opportunity!” Thor said.
“NOHOHOHO! I’ve been tickled so much today! I can’t take any more!” You lied.
“Sure you can!” Nat teased, dancing her long nails all over your neck.
You laughed for the millionth time today, but Nat’s tickles were different. Her long nails caused a ticklish sensation that Steve or Tony didn’t have. Their tickles were more rough, and hers were gentler, but still would drive you quite mad.
  “Nahahat! Plehehehase! Nohohot my neheheck!”
“Tummy it is then!” She giggled, dancing her fingers on your belly under your shirt.
You squealed and laughed while Thor held you in place. He was smiling ear to ear, and thought it would be funny to blow some raspberries on the back of your neck.
“These sides look luscious!” Nat teased, now moving to scribbling your sides.
You fell between your belly laughter and silent laughter, which everyone found very amusing.
Nat was now pinching your hips while Thor squeezed you in a hug and was rubbing his beard on your neck. You just giggled, because this didn’t tickle quite as badly as before, and you were quite loving being loved-on at the moment.
“Y/n… I might be gone for long periods of time, but it’s only because I am needed on Asgard,  or elsewhere. It does not mean that I do not miss you. You are so special to me, little one.”
“You’re special to me too.” You launched into his arms and hugged him, making him chuckle.
“Thank you for telling me the truth, Y/n.”
You gave him a small smile and a nod.
“Let’s go to bed now.” Thor said, lifting you up off the counter and setting you down.
Tony allowed Peter to drive the car back to the cabin. You sat in the passenger’s seat and Thor sat in the back. You had all the windows rolled down, blasting music. Peter was singing at the top of his lungs with you. Thor didn’t really know any of the music, but he enjoyed it as he was eating a party size bag of potato chips. It was a great time all the way back to the cabin.
End of Y/n and Thor’s Memories
You opened your eyes and sat on the bed, the happiest feeling danced in your chest. You felt so thankful that you got to make so many great memories on this trip. You heard laughter coming from outside.
You walked over to the open window and placed your hands on the sill. You saw your family surrounding the pool. The sky was falling dark and the string lights and tiki torches were lit. Steve was hanging Peter over the pool by his ankle and everyone was laughing. Tony was getting a fire started in the firepit as Pepper brought out marshmallows, Hershey bars, and graham crackers.
“It’s not over yet.” You whispered to yourself and left your room to join them.

Can you please write some fluffy headcanons with Leon ??

Recovery
Leon S. Kennedy x reader
Tumblr media
Shortly after his mission in Spain, Leon had countless visits to the doctors to ensure that the Plaga had indeed been eradicated from his body. And much to his surprise, the parasite had been destroyed on the island, along with Ashley.
However, on a calm afternoon, Leon was getting changed in your shared bathroom, examining the scar on his chest given to him by Krauser when suddenly his body erupted in a great pain.
Sinking to the tiled floor, Leon gripped his side and shouted for your aid. Rushing him to the ER, your boyfriend had to have emergency surgery to have his appendix removed.
The surgery went without a hitch and President Graham was able to give both you and Leon the vacation you deserved.
Returning home from the hospital, you made sure that Leon stayed put in two spots in your apartment: the couch and the comfort of your bed. Not wanting to cause a fuss, he did as you asked, and only walked around under your constant supervision.
You hadn't been so lucky with your appendix in the past, and about two months into dating Leon, your own appendage partially burst, causing a slight infection. But otherwise, there was no permanent damage.
Towards the end of his recovery, Leon spent the remainder of his afternoons on the couch watching movies or finishing tv shows with you.
So on this day, he had his head in your lap, coming down with a small fever. Dabbing a cool washcloth on Leon's sweaty face and neck, he couldn't take the feeling of his shirt anymore. So you took it off and tossed it on the coffee table.
"Thank you for this, Y/N. I don't deserve you." He whispered while you wiped off his shoulders and chest, then you pushed his dark hair away from his face.
"Of course. I'm always here for you, Lee. No matter how scary the situation is. Even if it makes my heart stop." You replied with a smile.
Taking your hand in his, Leon placed your fingers over the healing tissue on his chest, letting you feel the scar for the first time.
"My heart is still here. And it's still beating for you." He answered, letting you feel the rhythm of his heartbeat.

"Shit, shit, shit...", he muttered as he ran down the stairs of the apartment complex.
The rain was pouring outside, by now you had probably caught a cold, and he wasn't there to pick you up in time. This is his fault, and only thinking about your lonely figure on the side of the street makes him want to cry. You had asked him this morning, in the middle of his dazed mood, if he could pick you up after a job interview. Of course, Chan had agreed and said that it would be no problem. By the end of his day, which wasn't busier than any other day, he had forgotten about you and gone home. Your text reading "where are you?" had gotten him out of his seat on the couch and sprinting down the stairs. Guilt spread through his entire body and leaked into his bones as he got into his car. He could not believe himself.
When he saw you standing alone in the downpour his heart broke even further. There was a sad and disappointed look on your face that Chan was sure he would never be able to erase from his mind. You open the car door and he immediately pulled off his jacket to give it to you. With trembling hands, you take his jacket and put it over your chest.
"I'm so sorry, baby... I didn't mean to, I just-"
"Can you just drive?", you sniffled and turned away from him.
Chan and his friends had joked about how if their partner ever turned their legs toward the door instead of them it meant trouble. But now, when it was real, the action was much more hurtful than he could expect. Your entire body was turned toward the window instead of him, and he felt even lonelier than when he was the only one in the car. But he still couldn't find it in him to feel bad for himself. He had fucked up, and he wasn't about to deny that.
As soon as he had parked in your apartment complex's parking lot, you opened up the door and briskly walked inside. You didn't wait for him inside either, instead letting the elevator doors close right in front of his eyes. Chan pressed the button before it could start moving, and the doors opened again. When he got inside, you didn't look at him. In the mirror, he could see your puffy red eyes. You had been crying. Chan was ready to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness for making you cry, but the elevator doors opened and you stepped outside.
"I'm going to take a shower.", you muttered as you kicked off your shoes and made your way to the bathroom.
Chan carefully put his and your shoes away in the right place before walking over to the bedroom. He pulled out the clothes you usually always stole from him from his closet. It was his comfiest hoody and an old pair of sweatpants. Most of the time he would jokingly complain whenever you stole them, so giving them to you willingly felt strange. You had left the door to the bathroom unlocked. A part of him hoped it wasn't just because you had forgotten, and that you actually wanted him to walk in and pamper you.
"I have some clothes for you, sweetheart.", he said to the closed shower curtain.
You hummed over the sound of the water hitting the floor. Chan put the clothes on a small stool next to the sink and stepped out again, giving you your space. He wracked his brain for something else to do to make up for his behavior. So, he started making you tea and preparing a few blankets for you on the couch. And despite hating the film himself, he put on your favorite movie - ready for the two of you to watch when you got out of your shower.
The door to the bathroom opened and you stepped out in your towel with his clothes in your arms. Chan's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but you looked over at him with a small smile.
"You forgot to get me underwear.", you whispered out with the hint of a giggle.
"Oh... well, I made you tea... and I was thinking we could watch your favorite movie.", he said shyly, "Only if you want to, of course."
"It sounds nice.", you nodded.
When you got back from the bedroom, now dressed in his clothes, you immediately went to the couch and grabbed the fluffiest blanket to wrap around you. Chan sat on the opposite end of the couch, watching you carefully as you sipped your tea.
"This won't change the fact that you forgot, you know.", you put down your teacup.
"I know...", he nodded, "And I really am sorry. I completely forgot, like an idiot- and it's not because I would ever forget you, I just... I don't have an excuse. I don't know what happened, really."
A silence fell over the two of you. Neither of you looked away from the other. You didn't want to be mad at him, it didn't feel right, but you still felt hurt.
"Can you promise me to not do it again?", you asked.
"I promise.", he held out his pinky finger.
Giggling, you leaned over and connected your pinky finger with his. Chan put his other hand on your wrist and pulled you toward him, laying you on his chest.
"Did the interview at least go well?", he asked.
"I don't think so...", you sighed and shuffled around to get under his blanket so that you could be closer to him, "It was super awkward... I felt too embarrassed to go inside to wait for you."
"You'll do better next time, baby.", he soothed, "And I won't forget you next time either."
"You better not.", you leaned your hands on his chest to get a better look at his face, "Or I'll get really mad."
"If I ever forget you again, you should just break up with me.", he said, completely serious, "You deserve better than that."
"No, I don't want to do that.", you frowned but then jokingly added, "Who's clothes would I steal then?"
Chan broke out into a big grin and put his arms around you. You pressed a quick kiss on his lips before putting your head on his chest. His hand went to the back of your head after turning on the movie with the remote laying beside him. For you, he'd watch any horrible film thousand times over. However, when you eventually fell asleep halfway through the movie, he turned it off to let you keep resting. Without waking you, he tucked you in a bit better and got comfy - he would lay there for as long as you needed him to.
When you finally woke up, Chan had also fallen asleep. His head had lulled to the side and his mouth was slightly open. He looked so peaceful... so of course, you had to get payback.
"Chan wake up!", you exclaimed and shook his body awake.
Laughter filled the air as Chan startled awake and let out a yelp. He glared at you with tired eyes and tried to go back to sleep, but you started patting his cheeks with your hands - repeating "wake up" with each delicate slap. Eventually, Chan grabbed both your wrists and held them away from his face.
"Stop it...", he groaned, "I was having such a nice dream."
"It's payback.", you said.
"That's fair...", he sighed and opened his eyes, "Did you sleep okay? What time is it?"
Chan started rubbing his face to wake up. It reminded you of when an otter washes their face, and you made sure to remember it to bring it up at a later date.
"It's pretty late.", you hummed and looked at your phone, "Nine PM."
"Do you want to order some food?", he asked, "You can choose whatever you want."
"Yeah?", you grinned
"Whatever you want, sweetheart.", he reassured you and closed his eyes again.
"Thank you.", you pressed another kiss on his lips and started getting up from the couch.
"No, no, no... you don't have to leave.", he whined and clasped your hand before you could go, "You can order right here."
He kept pulling on your hand, making you lay back down on top of him. You chuckled as he let out a content sigh. The two of you stayed there as you placed an order, right until the order came to the door. Chan urged you to stay as he went to get it, and you couldn't argue with that.
The rain kept pouring for the rest of the night, but neither of you cared anymore. While eating, you watched the rest of the movie together and stayed on the couch until it was time to go to bed. Everything was back to normal, and you felt lucky to have a boyfriend who always knew the right words to say and the right things to do to make you feel better.

Random update
Some things from the past 2 weeks while I was gone.
Tumblr media
I have no tickle fics in progress at this very moment, but I'm considering a multi-chapter Sousou no Frieren fic, and a fluffy Suzume no Tojimari fic, both are not very popular fandoms in the community so I'd probably please no one but myself with it.
The guy next to me on the plane was watching anime so I couldn't help but side eye all the time and I thought it looked fun but I didn't know which it was. So when I got home I googled the keywords: anime, grandpa, guy black hair, magic - based on the things I saw on his phone lol, and google didn't disappoint: the anime is called Mashle: Magic and Muscles and I will add it to my list to watch.
Luigi is adorable, that's a thought Ive been having multiple times. He makes a cute lee too. I didn't write enough fics with him....
My boyfriend tickled me a lot, yay.
I rewatched the movie Sing 1 on the plane (a bit reluctantly since I really was in the mood for Sing 2 but they didn't have it), and I would like to announce that Johnny is a cutie, and a lee and I just LOVE his performance scene so muuuch:
youtube
Thanks to motivation by @lovelynim I finally started catching up with Honkai Star Rail story (will take a while), but I'll say the thirst for gallagher is real and I didn't even meet him in the story yet.
Still addicted to Fortnite, it was the first thing I did when I had time to myself at home again.
Haven't touched Genshin in a long time but download the monster update yesterday. Sure took a while.
I bought a new Chikorita plush. Very soft, very cute.
Today I worked over 10 hours at the office, only downside about vacations is the pre-vacation and post-vacation stress at work lmao.
I still have a couple of asks left in my inbox and will answer them soon, but I really wanted to post this first, and play more Fortnite now.

11:31 PM ~ *Lee Chan*
Tumblr media
Summary: It is at one of your famous garden parties you meet your betrothed. And he’s more charming than you imagines.
Pairing: Lee Chan X Fem!Reader
Genre: Fluffy Drabble
Word Count: 728
Warning: Talks about knives but no one is hurt
Masterlist
Taglist: @foxwinter
A/N: I wrote this while on vacation while I was listening to Paul Shapera’s song “Mad Gertie”
Ever since you were little you’ve always loved garden parties. The tea, the flowers, the colorful clothes, the wonderful cakes, and delicious music; everything was always perfect. It was at these parties you had the most fun. Sometimes, you’d be asked to show off your dance skills, knife skills, or both at the same time. Each time, you were proud to show off your progress to the guests and always graciously received their praise with a bright smile.
It was at this party in particular, that you had caught the eye of a rather dashing gentleman. You had just finished showing off your latest knife dance when you noticed him. As soon as you both locked eyes, he made his way over to you with a bright yet flirty smile.
“You were amazing.” He mused. “Where did you learn such an intricate skill?”
“I learned how to use a knife from the Captain of the Royal Guard himself and I learned to dance from my mother.” You explained. “It seemed natural to me to combine the two, don’t you agree?”
“Yes, it was quite a spectacle to behold.” He admitted with a nod. “But I’m getting ahead of myself. My name is Lee Chan, Prince of Dinole. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.”
You nodded as you took his hand. Your breath slightly hitched when he pressed a feather soft kiss to your knuckles. Clearing your throat, you took the cup of tea a servant handed you and took a sip. “So, you’re my betrothed, Prince Chan?”
He gave an awkward chuckle as he averted his eyes. “It appears as though I am, Your Highness.”
“Now don’t get  all nervous on me now. Just because I mentioned our engagement doesn’t mean I want to follow the strict and preposterous rules of courtship.” You lightly teased. “I’m glad you’re here, actually. I’ve always wanted to meet you and a garden party is the perfect place to meet.”
“I’ve wanted to meet you as well.” He nodded. “You’re much lovelier in person. Ah, I mean-”
“I know what you mean.” You nodded with a meaningful smile. “You’re quite dashing yourself. But please, regale me with tales from Dinole.”
He shrugged, turning to his own tea cup. “There’s not much to tell. It’s not as charming as your kingdom is. If anything, Dinole is much smaller.”
“Oh, well, I hope the sheer size of my kingdom isn’t too intimidating for you.”
Chan frantically shook his head. “No! I didn’t mean it like that! I meant it as a compliment! I’m so sorry if I offended you! Your kingdom really is wonderful, I promise!”
You gently took his hand in yours, stopping his rambling. “It’s fine, Chan. I know what you meant.”
“Oh. Okay, good.”
Still holding his hands, you sighed. “I’d like to visit Dinole someday. I’m afraid I haven’t been anywhere outside of my own kingdom.”
“I see…” He trailed off before squeezing your hands. “How about this: for my wedding gift to you, we go and see the world. How does that sound?”
You couldn’t believe it. Chan’s proposal sounded almost too good to be true. And yet he said it with such conviction that it just had to be true. Before your brain could catch up with your actions, you pressed a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth. Realizing what you did, you blushed as his mouth popped open.
“I do apologize for overstepping my boundaries.” You mumbled.
Chan shook his head before kissing your hands again, letting his lips linger longer this time. “You have no idea how much I wanted to do that as soon as I laid eyes on you.”
“Your Highness!” A miffed voice trilled.
Turning around in your seat, you saw your stuffy aunt with her pointed nose in the air. She did not look too happy to be witnessing your public display of affection with your betrothed. You couldn’t help but giggle, while Chan looked positively mortified at being caught.
Standing up, you gave him a polite courtesy and said, “Forgive me, but I must attend to the other guests. Thank you for indulging me in such sparkling conversation.”
He nodded, bowing respectfully. “Of course, Your Highness.”
Quickly, when no one was looking, you grabbed his hands again and whispered in his ear, “Wait for me.”
“Always.”

The Rules of Midgardian Dating
Summary: Loki asks you to court him, but you say no. He literally has no idea who you are! So he takes to Rom Coms to learn how to properly date a mortal.
Warnings: Some violence. Pretty fluffy, crack fic.
Words: ~5k
Tumblr media
“I was wondering if you would do me the honor of courting me?”
“I beg your pardon?!”
Loki, the God of Mischief himself, just asked to court you. Court you! This was the last thing you were expecting on your normal Tuesday afternoon. You are the prize administrator for the Avengers, an average human who goes above and beyond for a rag tag group of above average humans, and non-humans alike. The relentless paperwork was the bane of your existence and made you want to claw your eyes out for some relief, but overall, you loved your job. And boy, did they appreciate you. If anyone hated boring paperwork, it was Tony Stark, so he made sure to express his thankfulness and your attention to detail every time he laid eyes on you. Your hours and pay are great, vacation days were plentiful, and while you technically worked for Tony and the Avengers, you considered them your friends.
So, when Loki joined the group, albeit very reluctantly, you expressed the same friendliness you gave the rest of the team. On the very first day he moved into the Tower, his brother Thor at his side, you greeted him with a wide, sweet smile and offered him your hand to shake. The god just looked at it, scoffed, and walked away. The interactions between the two of you did not change much from that day. Loki would never look you in the eye. Instead, he only offered side glances and whenever you asked him a question, usually pertaining to work, his response was either a grunt or a couple of words if he was feeling particularly generous.
The message was clear. You were lower than the dirt on his boots.
But there he stood, shuffling in those very boots, and still avoiding eye contact with you as if you were Medusa. The faint pink tint to his cheeks was endearing, you did admit to yourself. But as you looked at him, you started to feel one thing: irritation. He literally knows nothing about you, never engaged in meaningful conversation with you, and frankly sometimes made your job much more difficult than it needed to be due to his aloofness and he expected you to say yes to his courtship?
Okay, yes, he was the most handsome man you ever laid eyes on. Yes, he was a freakin’ prince and a God and an Avenger. But did he really expect that to be enough? The privilege was real.
“I am sure it took a lot for you to come over to me, Loki, but I am going to have to say no.” Somehow, the irritation wasn’t in your tone as your professionalism took over. You started to gather your things to escape from this awkward encounter.
“I beg your pardon?” Loki said, mirroring your response from earlier. His brows were furrowed in adorable confusion.
“Loki, you barely talk to me. I think this is the most you have talked to me in months. I am pretty sure you don’t even know my last name.”
“Uh, of course I do!” Loki crossed his arms, feigning confidence with his tall stature, “You’re Y/F/N…Smith? No, Lee. No, Thomas. No, it is definitely Smith, I am sure of it.” He grinned widely at you. Oh, he was so sure of himself and while his smile was dazzling, you wanted to smack it right off his handsome face. The audacity.
“No. It’s Y/L/N.”
“Right, that’s what I meant!” You rolled your eyes and started to walk away.
“Wait!” Loki called out after you, following you easily with his long strides, “What must I do to get you to say yes?”
You had made it to the elevator, and you were frantically pressing the button, desperately wanting escape from this conversation that keeps on getting weirder and weirder. The trickster’s request was annoying and irritating for sure, but you didn’t want to hurt him. Your kind heart wouldn’t let you walk away from this guiltless, so running away was your solution to try and maintain your self-respect.
“Don’t hit it, just press it gently.” Loki’s advice just dug under your skin even more. You knew how to operate an elevator! Still, you smashed the button with your fist with frustration.
“I am pressing it gently!” Finally, the elevator dinged, and you hopped in, whipping yourself around to face Loki.
“Learn something about dating here on earth. Watch a damn Rom-Com or something,” You sneered, leaving a wide-eyed Loki as the doors closed in front of him.
Courting was a very formal affair as a part of the royal court and not to be taken lightly and Loki knew this. Back on Asgard, he would simply just ask to court someone, and they would always graciously accept his proposal. They would be practically falling at his feet! Yet, here you were, denying him and lecturing him on courting techniques. Loki’s initial reaction was a plethora of emotions all at once.
Shock. Offense. Then, eventually, consideration. But mostly offense.
Now, Loki was quite ignorant to much of Earth’s, or Midgard as he called it, cultures, and nuances. Frankly, he thought it was below him. Everything Asgard had to offer was so much better than anything Midgard had, and so he never invested much time in learning more. It never crossed his mind that Asgardian courting norms wouldn’t be accepted here, let alone offensive.
The first day he saw you, he was infatuated. The smile you gave him so freely awoke something in his heart that he long since believed was dead. He greedily drank your very essence in. The color of your hair, the suppleness of your skin, the brightness of your eyes, and the softness of your lips. You were the most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes in all his thousands of years and for a moment, after you greeted him, he was stunned. He felt his silver tongue turn to lead and the anxiety of embarrassing himself in front of you made his chest tighten.
Still, at his side, was his brother, Thor. There was no way he would ever be able to share his new, budding crush while his brother was right next to him. Loki would never hear the end of it! So, he did what he always did. He kept his stone-cold façade and treated you like you didn’t matter. Oh, but you did matter.
As the weeks passed, his infatuation for you only grew. Not only were you breathtaking, but you were clever. You handled Tony’s sarcasm with quick witted quips of your own, you held The Widow’s trust, and your opinion was well respected by The Captain. While you were, by first glance, an average mortal, you were far from it. Everything you did amazed Loki more and more, but what he cherished the most was your compassionate, kind, and gentle heart. Whenever anyone needed encouragement or a hug, you offered your whole self with words of encouragement and warm embraces. You were the teams behind the scenes cheerleader and everyday Loki scolded himself for pushing you away and treating you so coldly.
He wondered if he could ever be on the receiving end of your sweet gestures, to be the one to make you smile and laugh. He wanted to pour his affections on you as you poured your love on the team. But old habits are hard to break and each time he had a chance to be warm, his icy protective wall would shoot right up. It wasn’t until the anniversary of his fall from the Bifrost passed that he gathered the courage to finally ask to court you. There was no time like the present!
Your denial of him was heartbreaking, but you did offer him another chance technically. You were worth trying again for. Maybe he would take your advice and learn from these Rom-Com’s. But first, he would have to figure out what they were.
The Norns were on his side because just as that thought crossed his mind, the elevator dinged again, and a young Peter Parker hopped off.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Loki.” Peter chirped. The young hero was the only person in the Tower that would never judge Loki for asking questions about Midgard. Others would tease him endlessly for being ignorant, or worse – they would be like Tony and give the completely wrong information and watch Loki squirm as he made a fool of himself.
“Spiderling, just the person I need.” Peter gulped, never knowing what to expect from the God of Mischief, but still he kept his happy demeanor, “I need to know what a Rom-Com is.”
The look of relief on Peter’s face was obvious.
“Oh! Those are movies, Mr. Loki. Romantic comedies.” Loki had watched a few Midgardian films before, but he always preferred reading. Maybe there was something about dating to be learned about on these films. You did suggest it, after all.
“Can you give me suggestions?”
Peter was more than gracious with letting Loki borrow from his movie collection. The Spiderling seemed slightly embarrassed by the amount of Rom-Com’s he had in his possession, though Loki didn’t understand why. But with over twenty films in his arms, he knew he would find out what he needed to win your heart.
If Loki was anything, he was meticulous with his studies. He sat in front of his television in his little apartment within the Avenger Tower, notebook and pen in hand, and pressed play. It took him several days to get through all the movies. Thankfully, his reclusive nature was enough to explain him being held up in his room and avoiding interacting with the team.
Admittedly, he thought the movies were cliché, even cheesy and for a moment he questioned if they could or even should be taken as valuable sources for dating advice. But your heart was sweet and kind. Why would you lie to him?
His diligent note taking and studying paid off as he did notice quite a few common threads amongst the movies. The cogs in his brilliant, trickster mind was starting to turn as a wide grin grew on his face. It was time to try and win your heart again and now, he had newfound knowledge and tricks up his sleeve.
The prince from the foreign land who falls in love with the average person.
It had been several days since your encounter with Loki, and you thanked the God’s above for sparing you from any further awkwardness. You went about your days like usual and like many other days, you sat in the community kitchen enjoying a simple, yet delicious lunch.
“Hello, Darling.” You jumped, not noticing that Loki had popped up right next to you. The food on your fork went flying and landed on the nearby wall. You could practically hear the food sliding down the walls as you had your head in your hands. How embarrassing!
“What can I do for you, Loki?” You asked through gritted teeth, still not looking at the God next to you.
“I was just wondering if you were aware that I was a prince.” The velvety tones of his voice were smooth and charming…but what the Hel did he just say? You finally peeked up at him and there he stood in all his traditional royal Asgardian garb, curved golden horns and all. Everything about him was intimidating, regal, and magnificent. You couldn’t help but gawk at him. Loki must have noticed your greedy stare as he puffed out his chest a bit, bursting with pride and confidence.
“Yes, I was aware.” That immediately deflated his pride and his chest. Maybe he had to clarify it some more.
“And are you aware that I am from Asgard, not only a foreign land on this planet, but a foreign planet and realm all together?” Okay, now you were thoroughly confused. Did he think you were stupid or something?
“Yes,” You eyed him suspiciously now, wondering what the trickster was getting at with his line of questioning, “…I am aware of that too.”
“Oh, right.” Loki started to fidget. This wasn’t going as easily as he thought. Out of all the commonalities with the Rom-Coms, this was the easiest one he could implement. He literally was a prince from a foreign land trying to gain the affections of an average person. He should have this in the bag! Now, he had no idea what to do. You were staring at him as he stood in front of you, dressed to the nines in his royal attire as he was slowly transforming into the court’s fool
“And you are an average mortal, are you not?” Loki asked, his big, blue eyes wide and vulnerable.
“Well, thanks Loki. I guess I am ‘average.” You scoffed, again standing up and gathering your lunch. The tone in your voice was obvious. You were angry. He was so sure this would work! He stared at your back as you walked away, frozen in place. He thought long and hard. You were far from average – it was one of the things he adored about you the most, your uniqueness. That must be why this plan was such a failure. Thankfully, he had more Midgardian Rom-Com courting techniques up his sleeve. And besides, this is usually how it played out! The protagonist would deny the love interest constantly, yet by the end of the movie they were madly in love. Loki just had to play the long game. He was sure of it.
The Coffee Meet-Cute
Now, Loki had obviously already met you, but maybe a fresh start is what he needed. The coffee meet-cute was quite simple. Loki would stumble into you on your way into work, coffee in hand. It would be messy, the one part that Loki did not find that appealing, but once the character’s eyes connected sparks would fly, stars would explode, and everything was right in the world. The trickster never understood Midgardian’s fascination for the bitter beverage, being a fan of tea himself, but he wasn’t going to question the magic that was Rom-Coms.
So, Loki found himself hovering just around the corner of your office in the early hours of the morning with two coffees in his hands. Eventually, he heard the sweet melody that was your voice as you made your way down the hall. You huffed, tossing your heavy bag again over your shoulder. The thing didn’t want to stay up! Everything was going wrong this morning. Your favorite pair of pants had a tear in it, you couldn’t find your keys, and everyone and their mother seemed to be in your way as you were running late into work.
CRASH.
The next thing you knew, you were face to face with a broad chest and hot, everything was so hot! It was scalding! You all but ripped your clothes off your body in an attempt to get the hot coffee off of your body and save your skin, literally. Then you felt cold on you, very, very cold.
It was at that moment that you realized that you were practically topless in front of the God of Mischief. And he was staring at you! And his hands were on you! Immediately, his seidr had covered your body and healed and cooled your skin. All traces of burns were gone, and you sighed in relief. Sighed, right before you remembered your current state and the fact that he was touching you!
The horrified shriek that left your body was borderline demonic. Your arms flailed and shoved Loki away in a pathetic attempt to cover your exposed skin.
“Darling, Darling! It’s fine! It’s nothing I haven’t seen before!” Loki tried to reassure you. If you weren’t so panicked, the worried look on his face might have been cute, endearing even. But there was no time for that! You were officially a next level banshee screaming and turning beet red with embarrassment as you tried to dig your keys out of your pocket with one hand, while remaining covered with the other.
Eventually, Loki caught on to what you were doing and with a flick of the wrist, your office was unlocked. You gathered your soiled clothes on the floor and all but threw yourself in your office, slamming and locking the door behind you. He mentally cursed himself for not paying attention to the temperature of the coffee. There was no awkward, yet charming apologies. No sly, yet enamored looks. And definitely no offer to ‘make it up to him by taking him out for coffee’. Your ‘meet cute’ wasn’t anywhere near that.
Instead, you were burned, and you screamed. And Loki felt horrible.
Loki took one last look at your office door before retreating to his room. There was only one thing left that he had to do, if only to make up for his blunder today.
The Grand Gesture.
One common theme among all the Rom Coms that Loki saw was the ‘grand gesture’. It was usually towards the end of the movie and the love interest professed their love for the main character in a big, dramatic way. Loki racked his brain for hours on what to do to not only prove his affections for you but make up for his coffee blunder. He laid in bed, letting his thoughts run wild as he did mindless magic. Anything to keep his hands busy. Fireworks had just erupted from his hands when he bolted upright. That’s it! He grinned like the lovesick fool he was. This was it.
The Asgardian Prince waited for you in the community kitchen and on cue, you predictably showed up for your routinely scheduled lunch. You took one look at the God and turned right on your heel to hightail it out of there. It had been months of quiet, cold looks from Loki and now, it was like he was everywhere!
First, he reminds you of how dreadfully average you are. Like you needed that reminder when your job was to push paper in a Tower literally filled with superheroes. Next, he shows up at your office with coffee and spills it all over you, burning you! You did give him points for healing you, but those points were quickly taken away as you remembered how naked you were in the middle of the hallway. You were mortified! And you weren’t going to stick around to see what else the Trickster had up his sleeve.
“Wait!” Loki’s deep voice stopped you in your tracks. You wanted to run away, but even with that one word he sounded so frantic, so fragile. You turned around and faced him.
“I know I have been a fool lately and I am dreadfully sorry about the coffee yesterday. Will you please, allow me to make it up to you?” Loki pleaded.
The God of Mischief actually pleaded. The God that made people kneel and turned the city to rubble, was begging you to give him a chance to be kind, to be better. Those pleas shone bright in his eyes that bore right into you. Loki was much taller than you, but he looked so small standing by himself in the kitchen. One thing you learned about the Avenger’s is that people deserve second chances. And in Loki’s case, maybe a third and fourth chance and who were you to deny him that?
“Fine,” You relented, “You can make it up to me.” The sheer unbridled joy that swept across Loki’s face almost made burning yourself worth it. Almost. The God bounced on his heels with a renewed boyish excitement and much to your surprise, you found it quite infectious. You too were smiling just as wide back at him.
“Watch this.” He said simply, raising his hand above his head. You watched earnestly, knowing that he was well versed in magic. You had the pleasure of seeing it in person a few times, but it looks like he was going to give you your own personal show! Goosebumps started to raise on your skin as you felt your body teeming with excitement.
Fireworks started to erupt and burst from his hand and you oo’ed and ahh’ed as you watched the display. As the seconds passed, the fireworks started to get bigger and bigger. The colors and lights shone and reflected in your wide eyes as you stood there in amazement. Soon, the kitchen was filled with colorful sparks of light of every color of the rainbow. Some of the fireworks exploded into shapes of stars and hearts before bursting into little glimmers of confetti that fell harmlessly to the ground.
It was the most incredible thing you had ever seen! You were bursting with joy, but you had to bring your hands up to your ears. The fireworks not only looked real, but they sounded real as well. With each big bursting firework, there was a loud boom that came with it. The booms were so loud, you didn’t even hear the room fill with Shield Agents.
“Down on the ground!”
The next thing you knew, you were tackled to the ground and your arms were twisted behind your back. You squeaked out in pain and in shock. Loki must have been lost in the magic as well, as a Shield Agent slapped a magic dampening cuff on his wrist, putting an unceremoniously halt on his magical gift to you. The Shield Agents knew better than to try and tackle Loki. While his magic was subdued by the cuff, he was still a God with strength to match. Instead, they pointed an array of obscenely large guns at him.
Loki held up his hands in defense, but then he saw you on the ground and a Shield Agent on your back. A feral growl came out from the depths of his chest.
“You better let them up now if you know what is best for you.” Loki warned. In his younger years, he would have destroyed those who dared harmed you. But he wanted to be better. He wanted to be better for you.
The agents heed his warning and lifted you up to your feet, your arms still secured behind your back. It was at that moment that Loki noticed that you were crying. His heart shattered. He had seen your look of wonder as you watched the fireworks burst above you and it made the butterflies flutter wildly in his stomach. On Asgard, strength was always cherished over magic, but channeling his seidr was something he was good at. Amazing, even. It filled him with pride to see you so enthralled by it. It made him feel worthy. But, yet again, it all fell apart.
Maybe he didn’t deserve happiness after all. Maybe he didn’t deserve you.
Just as his mind started to run wild, he was pulled from his thoughts when Tony and Steve burst into the room.
“What happened?! I thought there was an explosion!” Tony bellowed in his full Iron Man gear. He turned and saw you, hot tears rolling down your cheeks. He then saw Loki.
“Reindeer Games, what did you do?!” He lifted his arm, ready to blast the God into oblivion when Steve stopped him.
“Can you tell us what happened?” Steve asked you, tone as gentle as can be. He waved off the agent that was restraining you and held onto your shoulders as they shook in quiet sobs. Loki looked on, now filled with a jealousy that he knew he shouldn’t feel. He hated seeing you so upset, but he wanted to be the one to comfort you.
“Yes,” You hiccupped, slowly trying to gather yourself, “Loki was showing me some magic. Fireworks. Then the agents burst in.”
“Are you kidding me, Reindeer Games?!” Tony yelled, stepping closer to Loki, “You know, no magic of that magnitude outside of the training room! We thought we were under attack! The whole building was evacuated! Now, we have to have a press conference to explain this, and Pepper is going to kill me!”
Tony threw his hands up in exasperation before dismissing the Shield Agents. The magic cuff was ordered to stay on ‘to teach Loki a lesson’ and Tony stormed out of the room. Steve checked in with you one time before following Tony, leaving you alone with Loki once more.
What Actually Works
Overwhelming guilt carried Loki over to you in quick, long strides. His large hands ghosted over your form that still shook in shock from the situation. You unintentionally flinched when he came near you and Loki’s hands dropped immediately to his sides. Everything was ruined. Any chance with you was ruined and the God knew that. He just needs to know that you are okay.
“I am so sorry that happened.” Loki’s voice shook with emotion and shame, “Are you alright?”
Still, at a loss for words, you quickly nodded your head. Your arms wrapped around your body, hugging yourself for some sort of comfort. These last few days have been horrible, and you needed to know why.
“Why is this happening, Loki? Do you hate me?” You avoided Loki’s eyes, but if you saw him, you would have seen the blatant look of shock.
“What? No, I don’t hate you, Darling. I could never hate you.” He took a daring step forward and placed a gentle hand on your shoulder. This time you didn’t flinch. His touch felt warm and comforting, and you welcomed it. You lifted your head and looked up at him and you saw the emotions swirling in his eyes. Something you never noticed before.
“Everything from this past week involving you has been horrific,” Loki couldn’t help but cringe at your comment, even though he knew it was true, “I thought you were trying to get back at me for turning you down.”
Loki held onto you a little bit tighter hoping to convey his feelings to you through his fingertips, “No, I could never do anything like that to you.” He let out a long sigh. It was time to fess up.
“I was trying to impress you. To try and court you as Midgardian’s would. I watched those Rom-Com’s as you called them to learn, but nothing turned out right. I never meant to hurt you, Darling, truly.”
There was a long pause between the both of you. You stared up at him, noticing the light dusting of a rosy blush on his cheeks. With all the chaos of the week, you never got the chance to look at him properly and even process any other possibilities of other intentions. You had just assumed the trickster was tricking you. It never occurred to you that he was being genuine. Then, his words truly hit you and you burst out laughing.
“You watched Rom-Coms for dating advice?! That is a horrible idea!” You had renewed tears in your eyes, but this time it was from giggling so hard. Loki let go of you, crossing his arms as his defenses starting to build back up.
“Well, it was you that suggested it!” He scoffed. You thought back and then you remembered your interaction by the elevator.
“I meant that sarcastically!” You said in between laughs. Loki was now thoroughly embarrassed. The God had the gift of Allspeak, but his favorite language was sarcasm. How did he not notice your tone? He was officially the court’s fool.
“Right, that’s it! That’s what I get for trying to impress the pretty and enchanting mortal! How could I ever deserve someone as clever and as kind as you?!” Loki bellowed in the kitchen, seemingly to no one in particular even though he was clearly referencing you “Everything you do is beautiful and captivating! Your walk. Your voice. You have the best and most beautiful heart I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and just being in your presence is an honor. You deserve all the most amazing things that the Nine Realms has to offer, and I just wanted to make you happy. You deserve to be happy. And, of course, I ruined everything.”
Loki was lost in his rant, arms and hands moving wildly as he paced back and forth. You just looked on with your mouth agape in shock. This is definitely not how you thought your day was going to go. And despite all the craziness that this God had brought to your life this week, you found yourself smiling.
“What did you say, Loki?” The trickster whipped his body around to look at you and the first thing he saw was your sweet smile. The blush on his face crept down his neck as he realized that he just shared way more than he ever meant to.
“It is fine. I know you don’t feel the same way. I don’t need your pity.” You took a few steps towards him until you were face to face with Loki, or face to chest thanks to his tall stature. Taking his hands in yours, you looked him in the eye.
“All I wanted from you Loki was for you to be genuine and to get to know you. Courting is a bit much for me when I don’t know you that well, but you know what I do know?” You asked and he shook his head, words lost on him.
“I know that you, too, are kind. You are kind and sweet enough to try and learn how to impress me and make me happy. I know that you are brave, and you persevere, because that is the only way I can describe how you kept on trying after each failure.” Loki couldn’t help but let out a dry laugh at that.
“And I have to admit, the fireworks were pretty incredible,” You smiled up at him, and Loki thought it was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen, “Right before the agents came in anyways.”
“So, the grand gesture worked?” He smirked and you rolled your eyes, laughing at the return of his cockiness.
“Yes, it did. I was always impressed by your magic. So much so, that I think I will let you take me on a date.” Loki’s face immediately softened, and he gently squeezed your joined hands.
“Truly? You will let me take you on a Midgardian date?” He smiled so wide; overcome with such happiness that you were even entertaining going out with him. It was so cute, so adorable that you were lifting on your toes and placing a soft kiss on his cheek.
“Yes, I will go on a date with you, Loki. Just no coffee this time.” It was your turn to smirk, but Loki still dazzled you with his smile that was nothing but genuine and happy.
“That, Darling, I can do.”

You had no idea how you managed to pull this off.
Your husband was a busy man, being the County Sheriff was a taxing job. “A full-time gig, Sweetheart,” were Lee’s exact words. The weekends he had off were strictly because he had to take them off, and even when he was home, he was still thinking about work or worse, working on something around the house. Yet, somehow, you sweet-talked your gruff but loving husband into take a vacation. For one whole week.
The drive up to the secluded cabin was absolutely wonderful. The spring foliage was lush and glamorous, each tree was an enchanting green that seemed to shimmer as the wind carded through the bushels of leaves. You oo-ed and aah-ed at the flowers as Lee drove the family car down the isolated road, one hand on the steering wheel, the other on your heart. He strummed his thumb across the knuckles on your intertwined hands as he pulled up to the quaint cabin your friends lent to you for the week.
“We’re here,” Lee said and shut the engine off.
“Oh, would you look at that!” You exclaim under your breath as you took in the neat little structure.
“Pretty neat-o, or whatever those kids say,” he joked with a smile, earning a hearty laugh from you.
“Lee, baby, never say ‘neat-o’ again, please,” you giggle and get out of the car, grabbing your bags and skipping to the front door.
Lee followed close behind with his half of the luggage (the heavier half), and the keys. Once the door was unlocked, you were skipping right inside to explore the rest of the cabin and unpack.
“Isn’t this just the prettiest place you’d ever seen?” You muse aloud as you wander through the oddly spacious cabin. The walls were clean, polished oak, painted a sweet cream color that was easy on the eyes, the floors were oak as well, but the stained wood floor in the hallways were covered by a running rug.
“Babydoll, I’ve seen a cabin before,” Lee sassed playfully. He chuckled when you gave him a look. “Yeah, it’s pretty, alright.”
“Mmhmm,” you tease with a giggle before setting your luggages on the ottoman at the foot of the bed.
You unpack rather quickly, Lee wasn’t a heavy packer since his time in the war. Once you hung the last of your dresses, you were immediately drawn to the large French doors at the other side of the room. Looking through the panes of glass, you took it all in. Lush cascading vines and limbs covered in leaves and flowers filled every corner of your view. The sound of birds singing their lovely melodies is carried on the gentle breeze, and you can’t help but smile.
The wood floor of the cabin creaked softly underneath the relaxed gait of your husband. The heat from his strong body offered another layer of comfort to the atmosphere around you. He sighs as he brings his large hands to your waist, resting his temple against yours as you both look out on the picturesque landscape before you. The gentle woodsy scent of the earth mixed well with Lee’s cologne. You lean back into his firm chest on instinct, the action always made Lee smile. He loved knowing that you wanted him near you, that your body naturally sought his out for comfort.
“Let’s get somethin’ to eat then we could go for a walk, how’s that sound?” He offers in a hushed voice.
“You want to go for a walk?” You tease with a grin, turning to look at Lee.
“Yeah, s’a beautiful day, it’d be a shame to waste it bein’ inside,” he smiles back, he was in a good mood, “besides, I gotta stretch my legs out after all that drivin’.”
“Alright, Sheriff, I’ll make us somethin’ t’eat,” you chuckle and press a kiss to his lips. He hums when your lips touch his, his hold keeping you from getting too far just yet. He brings you in for another kiss, this one was deeper than the first, less innocent. It left you both wanting and hungry for more.
“Go, before I change my mind ‘bout that walk,” he grumbles with a grin into the kiss, he gently nudges you away from him to control himself. You chuckle and shake your head as you playfully shove him back and head for the kitchen. He watches you leave with the same happy grin on his face, he couldn’t help but peek at your curves as you go down the hall. Lee sighs and turns back to the view, opting to stand in silence as he waits for you to finish making lunch for the two of you.
The silence that surrounded him was welcomed, he shut his eyes and strained to listen for anything. He heard the birds chirping, the wind rustling the leaves and branches, the cabin creaking and settling around him, and then your distant humming in the kitchen. No cars racing by the house, no phone calls from Bobo, no sirens, no deputies, no cases— just this. It was a heaven curated just for the two of you.
And Lee was going to enjoy every moment of it.

Part One was Oopsie Baby which you can read here. Part Two follows Bex and Jay during the four years while Jay is away in the Army Rangers and then the following four years while Bex is away at school
Rating: Teen Audiences and Up Relationships: Christopher Herrmann & Original Female Character, Jay Halstead & Original Female Character, Will Halstead & Original Female Character, Jay Halstead & Will Halstead Warnings: Talk of war, PTSD, multiple minor character deaths, ill parent, parental death, sibling friction A/N: I'll post the link to the ao3 page at the bottom. This story has not only an OC character, but some quirky elements which may or may not be everyone's jam. Just FYI. Please enjoy my mostly fluffy with a bit of angst story. :D

Chapter Two
Three weeks was not long enough for a visit home. Especially when you counted out the four days Jay spent with Will in New York and travel time.
But it was definitely better than the months of no Jay time that she’d been enduring so Bex would take it.
Luckily his visit came during the first few weeks of summer vacation so she was free and clear to hang out with him. He spent more time at their place than at his parents.
Near the end of the last week, they had a big barbeque in the backyard with the crew at 51. Everyone was happy to see Jay and Bex was excited to introduce him to the new members of the team. That turned out to be a mistake.
Not because they didn’t get along. They did. Too well.
“Hey, Jay,” Kelly said, talking like they were already ancient buddies. “Bex given you the scoop on this Charlie kid yet?”
“I think Cindy needs my help,” Bex said, trying to scoot away when Jay caught his arm around her neck and tugged her back into the circle.
“No, she hasn’t,” Jay replied, halting all of her attempts to get away. “Bex? Who’s Charlie?”
“He’s a friend from school,” she mumbled. Honestly. The new guys were great, but there should be a limit on how many older brothers a girl had to put up with.
“A friend she went to the moooovies with,” Andy crowed as she glared at him.
“Boyfriend,” Matt coughed. Bex sent him a betrayed look. Out of the three of them, he was the one who could usually be trusted to be semi-well behaved. He shrugged at her unapologetically.
“Boyfriend?” Jay’s eyebrows reached up to his hairline. “And this is the first I’m hearing about it?”
“Oh, we talking about the boyfriend, finally?” Chris butted into their circle. “See this?” He pointed to a patch of grey hair at his temple. “This is what happens when boyfriends start cropping up.”
“He’s not really my boyfriend—”
“Yet,” Kelly chimed in.
“We’ve just hung out a few times,” Bex said, feeling her face get redder by the minute. “He’s nice. We have fun. Can we talk about something else now? Anything else?”
“Why isn’t he here?” Jay demanded. “I want to meet him. Asking him about what kind of ‘fun’ you’ve been having. Make sure he’s treating my little sister right.”
“I think you just answered your own question there, Jay,” she snorted and managed to finally break free to go and hang out with Cindy and Connie.
“Anybody know this kid’s last name?” She could hear Jay asking the guys as she walked away. “I think we need to pay him a visit before I go.”
She sent Lee Henry their way with an ice cream in each hand to distract them before they could get too far in their plotting. Score one for Bex.
Three days later she was saying goodbye to Jay. Again. She definitely was not getting any better at it. Neither was he, which should have made her feel a bit better, but didn’t.
A month later, she was all set up for her first video call with Jay since he’d gone back. Well, it was supposed to be with Jay, but when the call came on, she could barely see him with the rest of his friends crowded around the screen.
“Bex!”
“What’s this we hear about a boyfriend?”
“Why didn’t you tell us, Mini-H?”
“Bex and Charrrrlieeeeeeeee!”
Seriously, she was going to set a record for older brothers.
“Would you guys back up?” Jay batted them away until he could see the screen. “Hi,” he said to Bex with a laugh when they could finally see each other. “How’s it going?”
“Good! How are you?”
He filled her in on what he could. Funny stories about the guys while they chimed in, wrestling for space in the background. She told him about how her summer was going so far. Volunteering at the hospital still, helping Cindy with the kids, and taking a summer art program.
“That’s awesome, Bex,” Jay said. “Sounds like a lot of fun. And how is Charlie? Don’t think I didn’t notice you avoiding the subject.”
“We’re not really hanging out anymore,” Bex said, hoping that would be enough to get him to leave it alone.
It was not.
Jay squinted at her for a moment. “What did he do?” he finally asked, the rest of the guys quiet behind him now and focused on the screen.
“Oh, my god, Jay, it’s fine. I handled it. Can we move on?”
“No, it’s not fine,” he said. “The fact that there was something to be handled is not fine, Bex. What happened? Did you tell Chris and Cindy? I’m calling them if you didn’t—”
“Jay!” Bex cut him off and sighed. “It wasn’t a big deal, okay?”
He murmured something to the guys and they backed off, leaving just Jay in front of the screen. “Bex, talk to me, please,” he said, quietly. “My mind is going crazy with what it might be and the fact that I’m not there to beat his ass is really not sitting well with me.”
“Nothing happened really,” Bex said. “It was more that he wanted something to happen and I didn’t so he didn’t want to hang out with me anymore.” She shrugged. “It’s whatever. I’m fine, okay?”
“Little shit,” Jay muttered. "Him, not you."
“If it makes you feel any better, Kelly, Matt, and Andy already parked outside his house and glared at him for awhile so the big brother message of intimidation has been sent,” she laughed.
“That’s good,” Jay said. His smile had a sad little edge. “Supposed to be my job though.”
“There will be other boyfriends,” Bex reassured him.
“Ugh.” He frowned. “That’s not helping.”
“I’ll send you their contact information every time so you can do long distance intimidation,” she said and Jay immediately brightened.
“Yeah?”
“Sure.”
“Hey, Bex.” Mouse popped his head in from the side of the screen. “This Charlie kid. His last name Howell?”
“Yes. Wait,” Bex leaned forward. “What are you doing? I was joking about the long distance intimidation thing.”
“Thank you.” Mouse disappeared from sight.
“Mouse? What are you—Mouse!”
Yeah, he’s gone.” Jay was cracking up and Bex shook her head. Who knew what Mouse would cook up. Apparently, Charlie was going to be learning his lesson many times over. Oh, well.
“Hey,” Jay said, calling her attention back to him. “I’m glad you’re okay. I’m sorry you had to deal with that crap, but I’m…I’m just glad you’re okay. I wish I could be there.”
“I know,” she said. “When’s your next trip home?”
He grimaced. “Not for awhile, I think.”
“We’ll make it work,” she said. “We’ve been doing pretty good so far.”
“That is true.” Jay smiled at her. “Talk to you soon, Bex.”
The guys all called out good-byes in the background making her laugh and they signed off.

What the hell is that?
***
Lee Henry tried to flush my art project. :(
***
Bahahahahahahhahahahahahaahhahah.
I mean. Oh, no.
***
Yeah, yeah. Chris laughed too until his keys got flushed.
Kid is freaking fascinated by the toilet.
Keep track of your stuff next time you’re home.
***
Bex got used to the longer stretches of silence that would crop up when Jay was off grid.
What she wasn’t used to—wasn’t sure if she could ever get used to—was the growing shadows under Jay’s eyes. The tightness around his mouth. The way he held himself now.
They had lost two more members of their little group, Jimmy and Weasel.
Months later, when Kevin and Axel finished their tours, they decided to head home for good.
But Mouse, he was always there. Bex was glad Jay had one solid person in his corner.
***
HAPPY BIG ONE-SIX, BEX!!!
Sorry, I can’t call right now. Reception is shit. I hope this email gets through.
I hope you have an epic party planned. I can’t wait to hear all about it.
Send pictures! I want to see Lee Henry and Lukey’s Halloween costumes too.
Got your license yet? Don’t let any of those idiots at 51 try and teach you how to drive. I call dibs on first lesson next time I’m home.
I’ll call as soon as I can.
Love,
Jay
***
Happy Birthday.
***
Hi, Jay!
Merry Christmas! I miss your face! I really hope we can video chat soon.
Guess what? Cindy and Chris are having another baby. Fingers crossed it’s a girl this time. Cindy and I are tired of being outnumbered.
The other news that’s kind of going along with that is they talked to me about maybe selling the house and finding a bigger place. They wanted to know how I felt about it.
I don’t really know? This was Mom and Dad’s house so there’s memories and stuff. But at the same time, it’s just a house, right? I’ve got more memories of being here with Cindy and Chris and you and the kids. We can all make new memories wherever we end up. It’s just weird to think about. This is our place. I don’t know.
I wouldn’t mind more space though, that’s for sure.
But if we move, you have to still come and see us when you’re home. It won’t be the same not being down the street from you. Promise you’ll come and stay with us. At least for part of the next visit. If we’re even moved by then.
School is good. I got a perfect score on that stupid chem test I was telling you about. Yeah, yeah – I know you said it would be fine.
Some of my art got selected for an exhibit which is pretty cool. Mrs. Talbot (our art teacher) submitted a bunch of pieces from different students and I had two pieces accepted. There’s going to be a whole opening night thing, but I think I’ll skip it. There’s a lot going on.
Say hi to Mouse.
Love,
Bex
***
Hey Bex,
Sorry it’s been so long. Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year.
Tell Chris and Cindy I said congrats. Honestly? I think moving to a bigger house is not a bad idea. I get why you feel weird about it, but you’re right. You’ll make all kinds of great memories wherever you end up. And moving to a better neighbourhood is probably a good thing.
And with three little boogers running around? You’re definitely going to want more space.
Also – shut up, of course I’ll come visit you wherever you move. Don’t be dumb.
Re: chem test. Told you so.
Tell me more about this art exhibit??? Bex! That is so awesome. Congratulations. You have to go to the opening night thing. Come on. That’s a big deal.
Love,
Jay
***
Jay. You emailed Chris???
***
Someone had to tell him about the exhibit. You were being dumb.
***
Thanks. That’s a sincere thank you, by the way. I don’t know why I was being so weird about it. I didn’t want to bother them when everyone is so busy. Cindy and Chris came and Uncle Bo and Uncle Mouch too. It was a lot of fun.
I sent a couple of pictures.
Love you,
Bex
***
Glad you went. Looks like it was an awesome night.
And your art looks amazing. Proud of you, Bex.
Mouse says he is too, lol.
Love,
Jay

Soon Bex was seventeen and in her last year of high school. Jay’s visits home had been few and far between, but they’d been pretty good about keeping up their chats lately. Until recently.
She’d been putting off a video call. It was easier to not talk about stuff in emails and letters.
But Jay was free for a chat today and she couldn’t say no without making him suspicious.
“Hey!” She put on a bright smile as soon as the call connected. “How’s it going?”
“Good,” Jay said, slowly, examining her face. “How are you?”
“Good, you know,” Bex said. “Busy with school and all that. Been studying at the library a lot because this place is a mad house.” She’d closed her door, but you could still hear the sounds of Lee Henry, Luke, and Max (yes, another boy) hollering at each other downstairs. Bex had tried to convince Chris and Cindy to sound proof the new house, but ‘it wasn’t in the budget’.
Bet they were regretting that now.
“Uh-huh.” Jay nodded. “Let’s skip ahead to the part where you tell me what’s going on with you.”
“Hm? What do—”
“You’re not the only one with Very Specific Super Powers, Bex and mine is knowing when you’re hiding something. Spill.”
“It’s nothing bad,” Bex sighed.
“Okay,” Jay said. “So there’s no reason not to talk about it.”
That was annoyingly logical.
“I have to start getting my school applications together,” she trailed off, not quite sure how to put her worries into words.
“Are you worried about not getting in? Or how to pay?” Jay asked. “I’ve got some money put aside—”
“No, Jay, no,” Bex said immediately. “Save your money for you. It’s not that. I’ve been saving and I’ve found a bunch of scholarships to apply for.”
“And you have like a thousand and ten percent in all of your classes so I’m pretty sure you’ll get at least some of those,” Jay said, waggling his eyebrows at her.
“I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I’ll be okay on that front.” Not to brag on yourself too much, but yeah, your grades were awesome, you participated in clubs and did all kinds of volunteer work, and held down a part time job at the library. You were pretty sure your odds of getting accepted to at least a few schools were pretty good.
“So?” Jay prompted.
“Chris keeps talking about me applying to all of these big schools and going for a science degree or business or something. About getting a ‘real’ education and ‘putting all my smarts to good use’. I just—” Bex sighed. “I don’t want to disappoint him and Cindy. They’ve done so much for me.”
“What do you think you could do to disappoint them?”
“I want to go to art school,” Bex said quietly, heart pounding. It was the first time she’d said it out loud.
“I mean, yeah, Bex, that makes total sense,” Jay said. “Look at what you’ve been working on the last few years. You’d be great at art school. What school are you looking at? What do you want to take?”
Jay’s easy acceptance had the words rushing out of her. “There’s a school out in Rhode Island and it’s really well respected. They have great programs. I was thinking about illustration? I’ve been working on some stuff and I think it’s the direction I want to go in.” She wasn’t ready to talk about the graphic novels she’s been tinkering with. Talking about this was scary enough.
“That sounds awesome, Bex. I think you should go for it. And I think you should talk to Chris and Cindy about it.”
Bex chewed at her thumb and shook her head a little. “I don’t know—”
“You remember when I was trying to figure out whether or not to enlist and I talked to Chris about it?” Jay asked and she nodded. “You were right when you said he gives good advice,” Jay said. “He told me that it was my life and that at the end of the day, I had to do what was right for me. I think he and Cindy will be more understanding than you think. Give them a little more credit.”
“I will,” Bex promised and they signed off.
And she meant to. She really did.
But she chickened out.
Instead, she applied to all of the big schools Chris talked about and filled out all of her scholarship applications.
And then put together a portfolio and applied for the Rhode Island School of Design.
And didn’t say a word to anyone.
Jay didn’t press her for more info, thank goodness. He let her ramble on about everything but whenever they chatted. She was grateful he was letting her be a chicken for a bit longer.
Finally, by the end of March, almost all of her acceptance letters had arrived. Chris and Cindy celebrated every one of them with her. 51 was probably getting sick of Chris’s bragging at this point. When the last one arrived, she snatched it out of the mail box (which she may have been stalking) and stuck it under her shirt, taking it up to her room. It stayed under her mattress until her video call with Jay the next day.
His new group had been with him and Mouse for awhile now and she’d gotten to know them pretty well. Logan, Fridge, Neil, and Skids (she definitely never asked about that nickname) all crowded in behind Jay and Mouse, cheering as she read each acceptance letter aloud.
“Full rides across the board? Holy shit, Bex, that’s amazing,” Jay said, smiling at her. “Okay, get the last one now.”
Bex’s eyes widened as he snapped his fingers at her.
“Rhode Island. I know it's there somewhere. Come on, let’s hear it.”
She pulled the letter out from its hiding spot and Jay leaned forward to peer at it. “You haven’t even opened it yet? Bex!”
“I just—” She scrunched the edges of the envelope in her fingers. “It’s the one. What if it’s a no?”
“What if it’s a yes?” Jay countered. “It’s nothing until you open it.”
“Come on, Bex,” Mouse said. “Open it.”
The guys all picked up the chant of ‘open it’ until she held up her hands. “Okay! Okay. I’m doing it. Shush.” She shook out her fingers and took a deep breath, opening the envelope.
And stared at the page.
“Oh, my god, Bex, you’re killing me,” Jay finally said. “What’s it say?”
“I got it,” she whispered. “I got in!”
The other side of the screen erupted in cheers as the guys whooped and thumped Jay on the back. He grinned at her and she knew her own smile was ear to ear.
“You got in,” he said. “You’re going to art school, Bex.”
“Full scholarship too,” she said, waving the letter at him.
“Man, you must have written up one hell of an application to all of these places,” Jay said.
“And she is very smart,” Mouse pointed out.
“And talented,” Jay agreed.
“They should be paying her to go there,” Mouse said.
“Well, they kind of are,” Jay said. “What with the scholarships and all.”
“Oh, yeah,” Mouse sent a little lopsided grin her way. “Congratulations, Bex. Good job.”
“Thanks, Mouse.” She looked down at her RSID letter with a happy little sigh. “I’m going to art school. Oh, crap.” Her head shot up, eyes wide. “I’m going to have to tell Chris and Cindy now.”
“Bex! You haven’t said anything yet?” Jay ran a hand down his face. “Jesus, kid.”
“I didn’t know what to say,” Bex cried, knowing that was a pretty freaking weak excuse.
Jay did too given the look he leveled at her. “When we’re done this call, you’re going down there and you’re going to show them that letter and tell them everything. I promise you they will be happy for you.”
“Promise.”
“Cross my heart,” Jay said.
They finished up her call and Bex sat for a minute gathering her thoughts. Her computer dinged with a new message.
Stop being a chicken and go talk to them.
“Ugh, Jay. Fine.” She stuck her tongue out at her computer, grabbed all of the letter and went downstairs. Once the kids were in bed, she sat Chris and Cindy down at the kitchen table and laid everything out.
They were surprised about RISD, but only the fact that she hadn’t mentioned applying to them. They knew she was passionate about art, but didn’t realize she’d been thinking about going to art school.
Because she hadn’t mentioned it. Funny how that worked.
Chris was a bit worried about how viable it could be as a career, but she told him all about her plans and show them some of her portfolio that she’d submitted.
“These are really good, Bex,” Chris said softly as he turned page after page. “This is what you want?”
“Yeah, Chris,” Bex said. “It is.”
“You know who you remind me of right now, Bex?” Cindy asked and they both turned to look at her. “This guy,” she said, laying a hand on Chris’s shoulder. “Talking about wanting to be a firefighter.”
Chris chuckled at that and nodded. “She’s not wrong.”
“So…what do you think?” Bex asked, trying not to hope too hard.
“I think you’re going to art school, kid,” Chris said and Bex burst into tears. He put her portfolio down and pulled her into a hug. “I’m so proud of you,” he whispered, squeezing her tight.
Cindy wrapped her arms around both of them and the three of them stood there for a moment.
“But also, how far away is Rhode Island?”
Bex and Cindy laughed as they broke apart and Cindy went to put the kettle on.
“Hey, I’m being serious,” Chris said. “Maybe I can get a transfer—”
“Oh, my god, Chris,” Bex laughed.
“And we can check out their elementary schools.”
“Stop.”
“And Boden and Mouch could come.” He grinned at her as she groaned, then went and grabbed the laptop so he could look up the school and get her to tell him all about it.
Bex wrote Jay to tell him how it went and his response was waiting the next day.
Told you so.

Hello! I'm going on vacation soon and looking for some light, fluffy YA reads to take with me. Along the lines of "Cool for the Summer," "The Heartbreak Bakery," "You Should See Me In a Crown," "The Falling in Love Montage," "Tell Me How You Really Feel," etc. Bonus for bi or ace characters but I'll take lesbians. Bonus for nonbinary folks. Not super interested in stories about guys, especially cis guys. (I do have Heartstopper on hold though. Not otherwise into graphic novels.)
Sure! Check out Remi K. England's The One True Me and You (bonus for nonbinary MC), The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde (bi MC and nonbinary LI), Siera Maley's Dating Sarah Cooper (also bi), Kelly Quindlen's She Drives Me Crazy, Adiba Jaigirdar's Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating (also bi), Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick's She Gets the Girl, Jennifer Dugan's Some Girls Do (or if you've already read that one and Hot Dog Girl, she's got a brand-new one called Melt With You - her books always have bi rep), Misa Sugiura's Love & Other Natural Disasters, and if your vacation isn't for another few weeks, you can add Flip the Script by Lyla Lee (bi MC) and Home Field Advantage (polysexual MC with a bi mom). If you're open to graphic novels, I would also definitely add Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu, which I feel like has some similar vibes to Heartbreak Bakery and also has nonbinary rep.

hiii, i'm that anon who requested lee!yuji. i don't mind if he's not wrecked as revenge in part 2!
i'm excited for the part-2 and the yuji cheer up tickle fic! <3
tysmmm for writing!
Hi again Nonnie!!
Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear you're excited <3
Sorry for the delay, I've been doing most of my writing at work during down time and it got super busy right before the holiday with vacations and junk... It's calmed down now though so I'm getting back to work on them ^^
I also got sidetracked by another non tword original work/project I'm working on at the same time, I have to take the inspiration when it hits bc my muse is a fickle gremlin... Lol.
Here, have a fluffy/comfort sneak peak of the Yuji fic for your troubles! <3
---
Nanami, of course, saw this. He let out a small chuckle as he idly picked up one of Itadori’s blankets from the floor, folding it as he spoke. “Yuji, if something is bothering you… you know you can talk to me, right?” He asked, glancing up at the teen as he neatly set it down on the bed. “Even if you think it’s something minor…”
Yuji bit his lip and looked back out the window. “Yeah… I know that…It’s just my thoughts are so scrambled right now… I don’t even know how to start talking about what’s bothering me...”
Nanami frowned, picking up another blanket and approaching the pinkette with it. He carefully draped it around him and sat down next to him. “I understand…”
A memory flickered to the forefront of his mind, he recalled saying something similar to his best friend when he was Yuji’s age. Haibara had responded by looking for the fluffiest, most comforting blanket he could find in their dorm room and damn near smothered Kento with it as he wrapped him up in it and hugged him tightly.
It was times like this that he wished Yu had still been alive, he’d be much better at this sort of thing than he was… “I’m sorry.” Kento said softly, his hands firmly grasping his students shoulders. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
Yuji looked at the window, the rain and wind had kicked up even more outside. “Can I… have a hug?”
Nanami nodded, not hesitating to engulf him in a big protective hug at his request. “Of course you can.”
Yuji smiled, the warmth from the blanket and the warmth radiating from the tight hug was soothing to him. He wrapped his arms around Nanami in response, resting his head on his shoulder.

November 2023 Reading Wrap-Up
Total books read: 5
Total pages read: 1,657
Days read: 25/30
Average star rating: 3.8/5
Challenge Prompts Filled: I stopped keeping track of the challenge prompts this month. Nothing I was in the mood to read fit with much of anything, except Chantal Reads All Day. The point was to find a new way to pick books, not to torment myself with things i didn’t want to read, so I stopped counting when it stopped being fun.
A Proposal They Can’t Refuse by Natalie Caña  ⭐⭐⭐⭐  I got this in a Facebook group swap I joined in October and couldn’t wait to start reading! It’s an excellent balance of romance and family drama, spearheaded by a couple of spitfire-y old men. The epilogue felt a little incohesive with the rest of the story, but I’m waiting to see if this debut is the first in a series before I judge it too harshly – I could see it being a nice way to tie several stories together, but if this is a standalone then it didn’t quite fit perfectly imo. Aside from that, this was a top-notch read! Friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, with a heaping scoop of “actually talking about your problems is the first step to solving them?” Sign me UP! This one packs an emotional punch in a few places, especially if you’re sensitive to cancer mentions, but it was handled wonderfully from where I’m sitting, and fed into a delightful story. I can’t wait to find out if we’ll get to see any more of these families!

One Night on the Island by Josie Silver ⭐⭐⭐(¾)
Many thanks to the local librarian who sat this one out in my book bag last month! I wasn’t sure about it at first, but I’m trying to read those down before they’re all due back, so I gave it a shot. Almost from the very first page, I was enraptured; now I’m trying to convince myself that moving to a remote island village in Ireland is not the move I want to make in my life. Because wow did this make it sound cute and idyllic and wonderful. The romance wasn’t quite everything I was looking for, but I suppose the ending befits the story: it’s almost as much women’s fiction as it is contemporary romance. Honestly, the biggest thing I'm missing as a reader was the aha moment where the title falls into place and makes sense. That's always such a fun moment, and as much as I enjoyed the every bit of the story, I wish I’d gotten to enjoy that feeling too. But honestly, how bad can a book be if it makes me tear up at a robotics meeting?
Booked on a Feeling by Jayci Lee  ⭐⭐⭐(¾)
This is a cute bookstore romance! I love book-themed books as a concept; they’re not quite meta, but there’s something close to a fourth-wall break, I think, that makes them very entertaining to me. It’s childhood/best friends to lovers, with solid anxiety rep, which I always love to see in stories. Aside from that, it was sweet, it was cute, it was sort of unremarkable, as romance stories go? I did like seeing Lizzy build friendships and find herself as her relationship with Jack developed, and it certainly wasn’t panful to finish. Mostly it was a solid, middle-of-the-road fluffy romance. Plus books and bookstores. It’s also about books and bookstores.
Hope Never Dies by Andrew Shaffer  ⭐⭐(¾)  Listen. Sometimes you don’t read a book because you think you’ll like it. You read it because it’s so absurd that you can’t believe it actually exists and you need to know more. That’s why I was interested in Hope Never Dies. It’s been on my radar for a couple of years, but somehow I never though to check the local library. Then I stopped in on a whim one day, on my way between robotics and work, and found this book AND the sequel on the 50 cent sale rack. For a dollar, I’ll try reading almost anything, but it gets BETTER because the librarian gave them to me for free. I was so excited to dig in, knowing that it was sure to be absolutely ridiculous. And it was. This book is crack. It’s just crack. Biden is the jealous ex-girlfriend watching Obama move on after his presidency, until a murder brings them back together and they become a pair of private investigators trying to find out who killed the Amtrak conductor. It’s a wild ride, start to finish, and worth absolutely every page. But that’s not the same thing as a “good” book. Just a book that’s worth reading if you like to laugh at the absurd.
CRAD November Prompt: set in a different time than your October book
Too Much is Not Enough by Andrew Rannells  ⭐⭐⭐⭐(¾)  An excellent memoir! I’ve been a fan of Andrew Rannells for years, and actually tried to start this book the year it came out, but life did the thing and I never got around to finishing it. It’s fun, it’s heartfelt, it covers his life before his career really took off, and that’s always a chapter of life I’m interested in. It’s not a memoir I’d say is really applicable to everyone, but if you like theater, or if you like Andrew Rannells, definitely check it out.
December 2023 Reading Wrap-Up
Total books read: 6
Total pages read: 1,214
Days read: ?/31 (I didn’t do a good job keeping up with my planner this month because I was so busy. But I know I read at least half the days, so for the sake of my EOY counter, I’m going to call it 20.)
Average star rating: 3.79/5
Challenge Prompts Filled: Still not counting these. Oops?
In The Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  This. Book. Was. Incredible! I actually started it late November, but it was after the first of the month when I finished it, so it’s a December book. And a damned good one. I was recommending it to people before I’d even finished it because I was enjoying it so much (my deepest apologies to head coach, who I traumatized by giving it a chili pepper ranking, and then having to explain THAT scale). It’s a little bit out of my wheelhouse, but it’s good to spread my horizons sometimes. It’s action-packed, romantic, compelling as all hell (even if I don’t usually love dual timeline, this one held my attention from the very start and I finished it at 1 a.m., crying in my reading chair), and probably three pepper spicy, if that’s something that matters to you.
The Trouble With Christmas by Amy Andrews  ⭐⭐⭐(¼)  This one took AGES to read. After I finished In the Likely Event, I wanted to switch to Christmas reading, starting with this thrift store find. Over two weeks later, I was still working on it, and I don’t even know why! I was busy, and it’s one of the longer books I read this year, but it didn’t feel like it moved that slowly. It’s definitely not a fast paced read, but the story never lagged or made me want to leave it behind. It’s cute, it’s Christmassy, she’s a struggling artist and he’s a veteran rancher, she ropes him into pretending to be her boyfriend for a harebrained scheme, and it’s really not a spoiler to tell you that they fall in love for Christmas. What’s not to like?
Miracle on Three Kings’ Day by Beth Laycock  ⭐⭐⭐  Full disclosure: after The Trouble With Christmas took so long, I focused on novellas so I’d have a prayer of reading five books for December. My holiday season was super busy, and I had a bunch downloaded that I’d been meaning to read anyway. This was a fun take on celebrating non-Christmas winter holidays, without a single flake of snow on the ground. It’s quick, it’s steamy, I felt like I could picture the main characters at every step of the way. Solid rec, if you’re looking for something short and engaging without too much depth.
Hazel’s Christmas Duet by Olivia Rian  ⭐⭐⭐(½)  I love a love story that’s not just about the romance, and this was exactly that! Hazel is new to town, finding her footing with new friends and rediscovering herself after a bad breakup. It’s a Hallmark movie in a mini-short, cozy and warm, and featuring a festively-named kitten. Easily something I could curl up and read beside a fire, if the fire didn’t mean that my apartment needed evacuating.
Noah by Callie Vegas  ⭐⭐⭐  Uh. This is not a Christmas book, it turns out. It’s a Valentine’s Day novella –the miscommunication is on me; the series is called “Holiday Flings,” and I mistakenly assumed that meant “the holiday season,” not “every book in the series is set during a different season.” Not a bad read, but people with reading habits like mine should know that it is VERY NSFW. Well written, we all know I love a single parent trope, but I spent every minute of it hoping that no well-meaning guest would ask what was on my Kindle. Just ... be aware of that.
The Clause in Christmas by Rachael Bloome  ⭐⭐⭐⭐  I really came in under the wire and finished my last read half an hour before my friends came over for New Year’s Eve game night. But I finished it, and that’s what counts! One of my favorite cheesy Christmas movies – this feels like a tangent, but bear with me – is The Christmas Calendar, and this reminded me a little bit of that! The premise was only very loosely similar: 24 Christmas tasks, distributed one day at a time, to get ready for the holiday, but it had the perfect vibe. As much as I was invested in the romance – I was VERY invested in the romance, trust me – I was waiting with every page to find out what the next Christmas task would be and how Cassie would embrace it. And a cute romance on top of that? What a way to wind things down for 2023!

🦇 Misfortune Cookie Book Review 🦇
Rating: ⭐⭐
❝ "I guess I can't let things rest. It's not good enough for me to just sit back and let these things happen when I know I can be useful." ❞
❓ #QOTD Write a fortune and tag a #Bookstagram friend! ❓ 🦇 Alongside her sister, Lana Lee leaves Cleveland to attend a restaurant convention in sunny California. With the intention of finding ways to help her family's restaurant thrive, she's focused on making the most of the experience, only to get in the (literal) middle of a catfight between a fortune cookie vendor and the journalist who wrote her a scathing review. Lana can't escape tragedy, though; a few hours later, a body drops from the roof where Lana, her sister, and their aunt are attending a swanky party. The body belongs to Aunt Grace's friend—the same journalist who fought with the fortune cookie vendor hours earlier. Can Lana solve the murder and give Aunt Grace the closure she needs?
💜 It's always difficult to dive into a series nine books in, especially with pre-established relationships and closed cases in the MC's recent past. Thankfully, Vivien Chien does a wonderful job of alluding to her previous books without leaving newcomers in the dark. The little hints we receive about her successfully solved cases, the other Asia Village shop owners, Lana's boyfriend Detective Adam, and the Majong Matrons have me intrigued about Lana's previous adventures. I'm glad I jumped into this series in what operates as a standalone, as Lana is away from home, her friends, and the resources she usually depends on. Her relationship with her aunt was heartwarming. The little shoutout to Laguna, where I was born, was a pleasant surprise, too.
🦇 The writing was, unfortunately, unremarkable. The prose was fluffed up with cliches that felt unnatural or out of place. Given a comment Anna May makes about Lana's metabolism slowing down in her 30s, I assume Lana is in her 20s, but neither sister uses language that feels natural for a modern 20 (or 30...or 40) year-old. Too often, there are random emotional outbursts or gestures (crying, winking, laughing, etc.) that also feel out of place. The emotional whiplash was jarring enough that I had to reread scenes to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
🥠 Anna May's character is a constant annoyance who only seems to exist to put Lana and her sleuthing abilities down, which is unfortunate because I wanted to like her. While Anna May should have acted as a foil for Lana's brash behavior by offering a logical or cool-headed frame of mind (or essential legal advice), she's instead used to spark sisterly tension. I have three younger sisters and I've never spoken down to them the way Anna May does to Lana. With eight solved cases behind her, I would have thought Anna May was prepared for Lana's sleuthing tendencies. Her sister could have acted more as a sounding board. Instead, there's a lot of telling, rather than showing, as Lana closes herself off to process the information she's gathered. The exposition and lack of action only cause the pacing to drag.
🥠 Most frustrating of all was the reveal. If the killer had a handlebar mustache to twist between their fingers or a white, fluffy cat to stroke while explaining their diabolical plan, they would have. The dialogue and tone felt overly sinister, while the killer's physical actions felt awkward and illogical. Having recognized the red herring and anticipated killer early on, the reveal also lacked the tension it desperately needed for a decent ending.
🦇 For fans of the Tita Rosa's Kitchen Mystery and Spice Isle Bakery Mystery series, old Nancy Drew games, or Boxcar Children series as a kid. If you guess the killer before the halfway mark, let me know!
✨ The Vibes ✨ 🥠 Cozy Mystery 🥠 Part of a Series 🥠 Nancy Drew Vibes 🥠 California Vacation 🥠 Female Family Bonding
🦇 Major thanks to the author Vivien Chien and publisher for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley . 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
