I remember when I was in high school, probably about 13 or 14 years old, all the girls my age got an invitation to get a vaccination against cervical cancer. It was a very new vaccin then, and I remember deciding together with my parents not to get it. It would only protect against one type of cancer and they said it was an STD so I figured I’d just have safe sex?? I’ll admit, I did not do my research back then, I was very young and fully listened to my parents. They were scared of long-term effects and so was I. It didn’t seem worth it.  

I am now 23 years old and got an invitation to get the HPV vaccination. This time, I did do my research. They’ve obviously gotten a lot farther in developing the vaccin. Girls and boys can both get vaccinated now, and it protects against several types of cancer caused by the HPV virus. I also read that it can be transmitted when having safe sex too. 

I’m aromantic asexual and have never had a relationship or any kind of sex. I’m not sure if I ever will because of my sexuality. This has made this whole situation complicated for me. It almost feels like I am denying my asexuality if I would get the vaccination? Does anyone else understand this feeling? It feels a bit silly. On top of that, I don’t do well with needles at all. I’ve already had to get 4(?) covid vaccinations in the last years. The idea of getting at least two more vaccinations this year makes me feel sick. HOWEVER, there is no way of knowing 100% for sure that I’ll never get a partner and have sex with them. I’m not sex-repulsed. If I end up getting HPV-caused cancer I will beat myself up so much for not getting the vaccination when I could. 

So, I have just made an appointment to get it on friday. Hopefully this post will give others that are in doubt the courage to make an appointment too! I realised that I should be grateful that I have the privilege to get it for free. Any way, if I got both vaccinations at least I’ll know I’ve done everything I could to be safe. 

(Also just want to say that I hate how it’s impossible to find online if you can get hpv without having sex. Thanks society! Some people don’t want sex. I know it’s hard to imagine.)

Le Monument à Pasteur

A la place de Breteuil convergent deux grands axes majeurs de l'ouest parisien. D'une part, celui partant du Trocadéro en passant par la Tour Eiffel, le Champ de Mars, l'Ecole Militaire puis l'avenue de Saxe; d'autre part, celui partant des Invalides, via l'avenue de Breteuil. Formant la frontière entre les 7ème et 15ème arrondissements, cette place en rond-point, autrement nommée esplanade Jacques Chaban-Delmas, accueille en son centre une statue monumentale, en hommage au savant français Louis Pasteur.

Ayant connu une grande notoriété de son vivant, fondateur d'un célèbre institut à son nom (situé non loin de là, mais nous y reviendrons un jour futur), le scientifique Louis Pasteur se trouve honoré en ce lieu prestigieux, cinq ans seulement après son décès, survenu en 1895. Dû à une volonté de l'État, sa réalisation fut confiée en 1900 au sculpteur toulousain Alexandre Falguière. Celui-ci, mort la même année, ne put malheureusement façonner que son ébauche en plâtre. Finalement achevé en 1904 par ses continuateurs Victor Peter et Paul Dubois, via une souscription publique, ce monument en marbre représente, outre le chimiste et physicien trônant sur un socle de grande hauteur, drapé dans une robe de chambre très "académique", les principales contributions de Pasteur à la médecine: l'invention des vaccins (notamment contre le "charbon du mouton", la rage (bien connu), le choléra des poules, la variole de la vache, d'où provient le nom de vaccine...), l'étude des maladies du ver à soie, ainsi que ses recherches sur la fermentation, ayant conduit à la pasteurisation, bien sûr... Une image très poétique de la Mort rendue impuissante se trouve aux pieds de Pasteur. La grande faucheuse, drapée dans son linceul, recule devant une mère soutenant sa fille mourante, sauvée de la maladie grâce à la vaccination. Cette iconographie est plus que jamais d'actualité, en ces temps de pandémie galopante... 

En lieu et place de cette statue se trouvait auparavant une gigantesque tour, dite du puits artésien de Grenelle. En effet, un puits artésien fut foré sur la plaine de Grenelle, entre 1833 et 1841, au centre de la cour des anciens abattoirs de Grenelle, bordant la place de Breteuil, descendant à 548 mètres de profondeur. Une tour régulatrice en fonte, de 43 mètres de hauteur, fut édifiée en son centre par l'ingénieur Hippolyte Delaperche en 1857, permettant l'élévation de l'eau à la hauteur du Panthéon! Il n'en reste majoritairement que des gravures, mais aussi cette photographie de carte postale, par Édouard Baldus, grand témoin de la transformation du paysage urbain sous le Second Empire.

今日は4回目のワクチン打ってきたゾー。今回は大きい接種会場じゃなくて、近所の普通の個人薬局で(いつもそうだけど)めちゃくちゃ感じ良い上に、注射がまったく痛くなかった。 カナダでは、欲しかったら抗原検査キット(5個入り)は薬局で無料でくれるので2箱もらってきた。チェーンのファーマシーではキットが沢山入ったバスケットに「ご自由にお取り下さい」って書いてあるらしい！ 外はあったかいんだけど、木々は色づいてきたねぇ…🍁 We had our 4th booster shots today! A type of flu virus that used to sicken people every year hasn't been spotted anywhere on Earth since March 2020. As such, experts have advised that the apparently extinct viruses be removed from next year's flu vaccines. The now-extinct viruses were a branch of the influenza B family tree known as the Yamagata lineage. Scientists first reported the apparent disappearance of Yamagata viruses in 2021. At that time, experts speculated that precautions taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 — such as masking and social distancing — had not only driven the overall number of flu cases to historic lows but may have completely snuffed out this type of flu virus.
