Happy Ostara/Easter/belated Spring Equinox 😊🌸🌿 🐰🥚🍫! . ✨Valar and Valier series (late 2000s)✨ - 🌳🌿Yavanna Kementári🌿🌳 Initial practice sketch, the final painting and a couple of details. . I now prefer to headcanon Yavanna as dark-skinned, but I quite like how this watercolour turned out - especially the gradation of the different greens in the dress and mantle, and the trees in the background. I also love Alan Lee's original drawing on which this painting is based 🌿💚 (swipe for the comparison! Original is black and white, coloured by me as a guide for the painting). . Some years ago I started a 'Valar and Valier' project in which I took an existing painting/drawing as reference/inspiration to draw/paint one of the Valar. So far, I've done Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Mandos and Aulë, and I also have some sketches of Nessa, Vána and Estë. Face designs for the Valar!

Each of the Valar has unique face pattern/marking things shared by their Maiar. Some disciples of the Valar (like when Celegorm joined the Hunt) tattoo their faces to match.

Melian's markings match Vana's, and are passed down through her descendants.

The Queens of the Valar

So it has recently occurred to my friends and I that only two of the Valier, Varda and Yavanna, have queen epithets - Elentári (Queen of the Stars) and Kementári (Queen of the Earth) respectively. Since I love all of my beautiful Valatári (Vala-queens), I decided to create epithets for the rest of them too.

♛ Nienna

In earlier versions of the legendarium, she was also called Qalmë-Tári (Death Queen/Mistress of Death), but that was back when she was the sister of Manwë and Melkor and married to Námo, so I don't think it fits her very well anymore. Though I have to say - very metal

Nainatári -> naina (verb) - lament

♛ Estë

Envinyatári -> envinyata (verb) - heal, renew

♛ Vairë

Lanyatári -> lanya (verb) - weave

♛ Vána

Almatári -> alma (noun) - flower

♛ Nessa

Liltári -> lilta (verb) - dance

(Yes, you read that right - she's the dancing queen)

This is the section final for the Valar!

Nienna

[Nienna] dwells alone. She is acquainted with grief, and mourns for every wound that Arda has suffered in the marring of Melkor. So great was her sorrow, as the Music unfolded, that her song turned to lamentation long before its end, and the sound of mourning was woven into the themes of the World before it began. But she does not weep for herself; and those who hearken to her learn pity, and endurance in hope. Her halls are west of West, upon the borders of the world; and she comes seldom to the city of Valimar where all is glad. She goes rather to the Halls of Mandos, which are near to her own; and all those who wait in Mandos cry to her, for she brings strength to the spirit and turns sorrow to wisdom.

Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin. He dwelt in Lórien, but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned pity and patience.

Vairë

Vairë the Weaver…who weaves all things that have ever been in Time into her storied webs, and the halls of Mandos that ever widen as the ages pass are clothed with them.

Nienna in Mandos

This is another piece in my new style attempt! I found out I really enjoy the look of watercolors mixed with colored pencils.

So here is the lady of hope and sorrow, in Mandos. I went with a scene of her at the very beginning, meeting with Eru who brings her wisdom and understanding of what's to come. The white lillies in the background represent death, mourning and renewed hope. So I found them fitting of this scene.

I love how I've FINALLY managed to get folds & highlights correct 🥹

✨Valar and Valier series (late 2000s)✨ - 🌟Varda Elentári🌟 and 👻Námo Mandos👻. Featuring the final paintings, plus some initial sketches. Some years ago I started a 'Valar and Valier' project in which I took an existing painting/drawing as reference/inspiration to draw/paint one of the Valar. So far, I've done Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Mandos and Aulë, and I also have some sketches of Nessa, Vána and Estë. Hope to get back to this project sometime! . I now prefer to headcanon Varda as raven-haired or white-haired and dressed in darker colours such as deep azure as well as white and gold, I think it fits the Universe theme more. I also favour non-Caucasian headcanons, such as her taking an East Asian, Egyptian or Middle-Eastern ethnicity in her form. And canonically, the Valier and Valar can technically take any form they like regarding ethnicity, appearance and such, so there’s not even an in-universe rule against having a myriad of ethnicities amid the Valar and Maiar 👌

🌟 VARDA 🌟

🎨Media: Graphite, metallic pens, colour pencils, watercolours, metallic silver and gold gouache. The porportions are not quite right in the finished painting, the arm is too long and so on, but I really like how the head and the metallic paints turned out. . ✨References: The head for the finished painting is a direct inspiration of Alan Lee's Lady of the Lake. The initial sketch is original, the other Varda sketch and the hand studies are study-copies

The prompt was for fic about Vairë and Ungoliant, though I picked the ‘total free rein’ collaboration level, and I left the relationship dynamics and the plot totally up to my wonderful author.
