Downtown Vancouver gets its Outdoor Living Room

The City of Vancouver completed renovations of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza this week, creating an outdoor living room for the city’s downtown core.

Several years ago when I started this blog, I lamented Vancouver’s unsightly - and only - central public square. At the time, the Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza consisted of heaps of bark mulch surrounded by an aging fountain at the foot of the Vancouver Art Gallery steps.

”Why can’t it be like Bryant Park?” - was the question I posed. The popular New York park, situated near the steps of the New York Public Library, is roughly the same layout as the gallery’s North Plaza. Except it is a lively public space with a large lawn where people hang out in the summer and it has a carousel, movable green chairs and lots of public programming (such as concerts and outdoor movies).

As the writers at Vancity Buzz put it bluntly “the Vancouver Art Gallery plaza is an embarrassment to the city.”

The new design involved removing the bark mulch, existing pavement, and a large central fountain. The area was flattened and covered with a new pattern of precast pavers.The plan also involved removing all trees in the plaza and replacing them with new ones planted on the western edge. A variety of seating types are offered in the redesign, including fixed furniture and moveable seating to accommodate the flexibility needs of large events.

This redesign is complete in time for this weekend’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival. I tried to get photo’s today of the new plaza, but it was a construction zone, so here are some photos from the CBC website:

... the more we can get people walking, biking and taking transit, (the better the chance) that when you have to drive a car somewhere it will be a better experience for you.

Toronto’s new transportation manager, Barbara Gray, makes one of the points that often gets lost in heated debates (e.g. here, here and here)  about how we get around in the 21st century. Think about it for a second:  More people 🚶🏽, 🚴🏽‍♀️ and riding 🚎 = fewer 🚘 on the road = more space for those that still get need to get around by car. Everybody wins! 

The quote comes from a Toronto Star interview, which notes that as Seattle’s deputy director of transportation Gray authored one of the first guides for designing ‘complete streets’ in an American city. Complete streets are streets designed for the safe, comfortable and convenient use by all ages and abilities however they choose to get around. Is your community building complete streets? How many different ways can you get from A to B and maybe C, D and E in your community?💡
