My autistic rambling about Cassandra from Tangled.
I refuse to use Gothel as her last name…
Anyways,
Saying that Cassandra was “angry at Rapunzel for getting kidnapped” is such a grossly incorrect representation of what was actually going on and I am tired of people pushing that that was all that upset her, instead of the seasons long conflict that was building up that culminated in her taking her anger about something only partially related out on Rapunzel because she was ALREADY upset with her.
Cass’ issues with Raps did not start when she took the moonstone, hell it didn’t even start when she went into the room in the house of yesterday’s tomorrow. It started in season one when Rapunzel was constantly, even if unintentionally, finding ways to overshadow her. It was worsened when Raps stopped valuing her opinion, which was a problem for Cass because she felt she had outlasted her usefulness, even though Cass is shown as a character who feels like she always needs a purpose or a duty to follow (which is likely a trauma response from being abandoned tbh???). Everything builds through seasons one and two, and Cassandra consistently finds herself overshadowed and ignored by Rapunzel and the people around her.
And THEN, Cass is given earth shattering news. Everyone else already chooses Rapunzel over her, of course her own mother did too. This particular instance wasn’t Rapunzel’s fault, but it pushed the same idea and feeling that all these other instances did; Cass isn’t important, and will always be outshined by Rapunzel. Something she had felt and experienced over and over, but this time the information was just big enough to be what sent her over the edge.
Yes, Cassandra overreacts, but she also is CONSTANTLY shown to be seeing whats wrong with her actions and rethinking everything. The first time, during Crossing The Line, she only doesn’t back down because Rapunzel triggers her by telling her to “wait”, the one thing she had been doing her entire life.
After that, every single major conflict with Cass throughout season 3 involves her realizing her error or questioning her path in some way, but people love to forget that she was actively being manipulated by Zhan Tiri at this point, leading her to being convinced to stay on the path Zhan Tiri wants her to be on. Yeah Cass is acting terrible, because an actual warlock found her when she was at her lowest and used her negative emotions to manipulate things in their favor. Eventually, when she is freed from that relationship with Zhan Tiri, everything resolves rather quickly, her having noticed the errors of her ways for a while now, but being constantly assured she was right.
In a way, Zhan Tiri plays a very similar role for Cassandra to that of what Gothel was to Rapunzel in the original movie.
I can probably do a more coherent, not-written-at-almost-midnight analysis of Cassandra eventually, because I have a lot to say and this is all over the place, but to conclude: Cassandra’s anger is not directly at Rapunzel for being kidnapped by Gothel. That simply happened to be the straw that broke the camels back after other events causes Cass similar feelings. This reveal was just the biggest, held the most weight. Even though Cass calmed down and again and again realized her wrong doings, the wrong person had influence over her when she was extremely vulnerable, leading the conflict to continue when it could have easily been avoided without the warlock’s influence.

The more I think about it, the more I hate CS for using Varian saying "Daddy" when he found Quirin sealed in the amber as "proof" that he's still "too inmature" for the truth.
Because as someone who lost her mother at the age of 28, even I went back to my "mommy" phase during the grieving process.
Wheter you call your parent dad/mom or daddy/mommy says literally NOTHING about your maturity, ESPECIALLY when you're grieving them.

An alternate take on "Tangled" (2010)
Tumblr media
I've been on a roll with these lately! While I find "Tangled" underrated, there are some things I'd change to make it more enjoyable for me. BTW, I've never watched the animated series in it's entirety; I only know a few things, so I can't include much from that perspective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In terms of Rapunzel, I'd wanna tweak a couple things, mainly nit-picks. One of them is making her older than 18; I feel like it shows that she's very young, and Flynn felt very mature by comparison, so it felt a bit off to me. I'd also love for Rapunzel to have another outfit. I love her OG one, but the concept art outfits are gorgeous as well. Maybe she packs a change of clothes. Plus I wish she looked a little bit less frail, given her athleticism. I'm not saying she's gotta be buff, but less thin than she was in the final product. Just my two cents. Plus let's think about her using her crossbow along with her frying pan. And I'd probably make her cynical about the world, reeling back on the naivete a bit. And controversial change: make her illiterate. I thought to myself why Gothel would go through the trouble of teaching her how to read, especially if it kept her docile. I could imagine her giving Rapunzel a lot of misinformation, which Pascal does his best to fix. Her love interest would teach her how to read, which I feel like would be a great bonding experience. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
2. Replace Flynn Ryder with Bastion. I find a lovable guy trying to get out of being a thief more interesting than the dime-a-dozen pessimistic thief trope (check out my post on that). He's basically Kristoff, and I love the size difference between them. And given that Bastion is a thief and had a rough life, it's likely he didn't learn to read much, either. Perhaps they learn together--or maybe he was taught how to read and taught Rapunzel. Either way, it makes for a romantic bonding experience. Plus Bastion trying to escape his boss gives him his own story arc; in the OG film, the Stabbington brothers pursue Flynn, but this amounts to nothing because of Gothel. Their biggest role was helping Gothel make Rapunzel think the outside world was dangerous. Bastion is eventually framed for his boss' crimes and blinded, and his dog Beau guides him back to Rapunzel. I did still want Gothel to kill him and Rapunzel bring him back to life, but maybe blinding and death is too much at once.
Tumblr media
3. The powers of Rapunzel's hair has different parameters. Similar to the animated series, it is very durable and difficult to cut; this is revealed to be due to Rapunzel's subconscious nature to distrust others. As a result, it isn't until Rapunzel falls in love with (and thus trusts) Bastion that he can cut her hair. I think it's a neat metaphor for letting your guard down, a Samson and Delilah situation--except this doesn't end poorly.
Tumblr media
4. Adventures in Corona are WILDLY different. Rapunzel and Bastion spend more time there in the film--in fact, I'd say they spend about half of the movie there. Rapunzel accidentally heals someone else while healing Bastion, and decides to use her powers to heal others in Corona, albeit anonymously because of Gothel scaring her about people wanting to manipulate her. This turns out to be true when Rapunzel's identity is revealed. She is further exotified due to her blonde hair while everyone in Corona has brown, black, or red hair (not sure if this is the case in the OG film, but in my version it is). Gothel makes this worse, revealing the decay incantation while Rapunzel is asleep, harming someone in the process. Bastion helps her escape before she is brought before the king and queen for a trial, and Gothel "rescues" her while Bastion takes the fall for it and his boss' crimes. Plus I'd want to use the demo lyrics for the decay incantation; they feel more haunting (albeit shorter).
Tumblr media
5. More of Gothel's backstory is explored, and she is less overdramatic in this version, so that she comes off as more serious and concerned, and may even make the audience question whether she really cares about Rapunzel. Plus her gradual aging is more apparent, as when she visits Rapunzel, she barely recognizes Gothel at first, as she's aged a lot since Rapunzel left.
Tumblr media
6. Varian and Cassandra are canon here, given that Rapunzel spends more time in Corona and forms platonic connections. I wanted to work in the moondrop storyline, but the film has enough going on already. I will admit I'm kinda torn about including Varian because of the sci-fi elements that come with him being an alchemist and the clash it makes with the magical and mystical vibes of the film, preferring instead for him to be a wizard to expand on the fantasy aspect--but that's probably an unpopular opinion since it's the exact opposite of who he is, to my understanding. Cassandra is kind of key to helping Rapunzel question Gothel, though--not in a direct way like Bastion, but due to the fact that Cassandra looks like Gothel. This is jarring to Rapunzel, as she first dismisses her as a descendant of Gothel (her mother does adore her youth, after all), though this only gives Rapunzel MORE questions to ask her "mother," especially as she now realizes they don't look anything alike. If anything, she at least wants to ask about her father, which does kinda pave the way for an updated version of the deleted song "Are There Girls In the World Like Me?" I also wanted to include a subplot where Gothel manipulates Cassandra (who in my version, never knew her mother, and doesn't see a resemblance due to her aged appearance) into being envious of Rapunzel for being raised by her mother, but I don't think there's enough time to fully flesh that out with everything else. Honestly, a part of me wants to remove Cassandra and Gothel's relationship entirely and have Cassandra exist independent of her show counterpart's history since there isn't time to really focus on it.
Tumblr media
7. Bastion is royalty. Perhaps ripping off of Barbie's Rapunzel a bit, I'd take into account Flynn Ryder actually being royalty and making Bastion the kidnapped son of a neighboring royal, making him once again similar to Rapunzel; kidnapped and used for dastardly deeds. This threatens to throw the kingdom into war, and Gothel hopes it destroys any thoughts of searching for Rapunzel, as she tells King Edmund that Bastion was kidnapped by the Corona royal family. I do like the idea that Bastion does have a sibling or two just so he isn't first in line for the throne, though; it's tough enough that Rapunzel has never learned to rule a kingdom, and Bastion being the heir to his throne doesn't bode well, either--at least not in a practical sense. I love the idea that by the end of the film, everyone is left with introspective thoughts and able to start anew after all the pain they experienced.
Lemme know what you think! I thought hard on it, and similar to "Big Hero 6," I had a lot I wanted to include, but it may be too much for one film.

Random page of Aiden's timeline ~
I have no idea if what's happening is understandable since none of you has context lmao- but something something- they all became so close they're somehow linked, and Aiden's magic impacts the others even if they're away.
At the moment Nuru and Yong aren't in the library, Varian shutting himself off from the team really took a toll on them. While Aiden wanted to give Varian time to come to his senses, Nuru and Yong were mad and wanted to do anything to keep their mind occupied, meanwhile Hugo was desperate to get Varian back. It's only after a heated conversation with Donella that Aiden decided to take the matter in their own hands, and upon discovering Hugo hurt and Ulla possessing Varian, they are PISSED.

I know you already talked about Adira, but what are some other things that felt like they'd be a bigger deal when they debuted but kinda got shafted? I, for one, think of the scroll, which kinda served its purpose, got destroyed, and left more questions than answers, and Varians connection to the brotherhood most of all. I don't even think we got a scene of Quirin telling Varian about the brotherhood, but by the season 3 finale, Varian already knows. That was a conversation we missed.
I agree about the scroll. There is so much in the design that I thought was going to be touched upon. Like this section:
Tumblr media
What does all that mean? Control over plants and animals? I thought the combined Sundrop and Moonstone were going to represent this whole... power of creation thing, or something.
Frankly, I've never been particularly interested in the "Varian's connection to the Brotherhood" angle. Quirin's life as a member of the Brotherhood is well and truly behind him, and Varian isn't actually "connected" to them at all. They're people his dad used to work with, long before he was born. Does this mean I don't think they'd be interested in getting to know him and vice versa? No. At least, not necessarily. But while Adira was clearly aware of Varian, she made no attempt to make contact, even when the kid was completely alone. But I never thought that would be a big deal in the story, which is what you're asking me.
I thought Lady Caine was going to be a much bigger deal than she turned out to be. As the primary villain of the pilot movie -- and with a very good point and driving force behind her -- I definitely thought there'd be more to her than the occasional escape and needing to be stopped and returned to prison. (Ever think how she and the other criminals took over the prison barge, but there's not a guard to be seen? She killed those people, or had them killed, and threw them overboard.) I thought she was going to join forces with Andrew in jail, since they had a common goal. (And yeah, by the end of S1, I thought Varian was going to be involved in that gang as well.)
I know I've talked about it recently, but I thought the hourglass in "No Time Like the Past," the shell in "Day of the Animals" and the dragon egg in "Pascal's Dragon" we all pointing toward Matthews laying a subtle attack of chaos on Corona, trying to weaken it from the inside. I thought he and Sugracha were going to make a return, even if it was just because they were still trapped in the Lost Realm, and would spend part of the finale making the lives of the heroes who got trapped there hell (instead of the goofy nonsense we got instead). I expected this so much that every time they weren't used or mentioned, I expected them to show up farther along down the road.
I thought we were going to learn what exactly Gothel's role was with the Disciples of Zhan Tiri. I thought they'd explain why she split from them (if she split from them) and talk about how her greed over the Sundrop flower resulted in her not getting a powerful spirit form or something. I thought the fact that she was one of them was going to be a bigger deal.
I thought Cassandra's burned arm was going to be a bigger deal, especially considering how it was the catalyst that caused Cassandra to close herself off from Rapunzel and let Zhan Tiri in. But once it served its purpose to cause a rift between them, it didn't even matter that it had been so severely injured. That's even the hand she grabbed the Moonstone with, and the glove on that side was blue, making it stand out. I thought the decay was going to be spreading over her body under the suit, and the Moonstone was going to be the only thing keeping her strong and well. But the injured arm didn't even matter anymore.
I thought Eugene's past was going to be a bigger deal. He knew Lady Caine. His best friend from the orphanage and thieving days returned as a supporting character. He has an ex-fiancée, who is the daughter of the most powerful man in the criminal underworld outside of Corona. But the next time we saw Stalyan, she didn't even have anything to say about her dad who, the last time we saw him, was dying from a spider bite. Not only did she not mention him, she was even semi-reformed (and not by Eugene). Eugene's entire past was only really touched on here and there. I appreciate that they shed any light on it at all, but it was much less than I was anticipating.
There's probably more, but I slept terribly last night and I've got a headache, so this is all I can think of right now.

there was a post that showed up on my dash about mother gothel and antisemitism but the op blocked reblogs, and i would like to talk about it because the take was really bad and filled me with anger and this is my blog i make the rules. i have no clue how old it is. i dont care im upset and i wanna talk about it sjfkdgj
cw for discussions of antisemitism in tangled under the thing i got a lot of thoughts so read more my beloved
Tumblr media
This is a bad take.
Whether or not it was intentional, Mother Gothel looks like a jewish woman. Her name is mother Gothel. making the protagonist of this story a blonde haired blue eyed girl who was kidnapped by a woman with dark curly hair and a hooked nose has implications whether you wanted to have them or not.
Not to mention! Blood libel! for anyone who is not aware, blood libel is a very old antisemitic trope that is found in Tons of pieces of media, where jews are accused of kidnapping and murdering goyim and using their blood in religious rituals. A lot of stories will use this trope without even realizing it, (Dracula is one that immediately comes to mind) which is why it is so important we talk about antisemitism and how pervasive it is.
A story about a woman with jewish features, named mother gothel, who kidnapped a blonde haired blue eyed girl and used her in a ritual to keep herself young has implications. Very bad implications. Passive antisemitism and active antisemitism are different, but getting defensive when someone (especially jewish people) tell you that a piece of media is harmful is in fact antisemitic and is very frustrating.
Tumblr media
Yes! If you create a characters with stereotypically jewish features, especially in a medium that has a Very long history of jew coding its villains, that is a problem. You can say it wasn't intentional, but please tell that to all the kids in disney circles who compared me to mother gothel. (News flash, I don't look like the VA. I look like an ashkenazi jew.)
This isn't to say you can't still love Tangled. I'm in the fandom. I'd be a complete hypocrite. But ignoring the harmful parts only makes things worse.
By the way, a side note, I was not seething when I read this, but then I read the tags.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry but. No? Respectfully can we not compare an antisemitic villain (she is antisemitic. I don't care if it wasn't intentional. Her design hurts jewish people.) to a genocidal maniac? Out of all the disney villains you could have picked to make that point you picked the one who explicitly wanted to commit genocide. I'm sorry but I really do not understand how you thought that was an OK and good point to make.
