World Parrot Day was created by World Parrot Trust in 2004 to highlight the plight of wild parrots and raise awareness about the role of importing birds in causing this plight. In the lead up to the first observance, World Parrot Trust had put forth a petition that called for the European Union to ban the trade of wild birds in Europe, and it had been signed by tens of thousands of people from dozens of countries. On the first World Parrot Day, zoos around the world marked the day and celebrants gathered at London’s Trafalgar Square. Supporters of the petition and their parrot companions marched from the square down Downing Street to deliver it. Their efforts bore fruit in 2007. Today, World Parrot Day aims to highlight the threats that captive and wild parrots face, and zoos and other organizations hold special events around the world.

Founded in 1989, World Parrot Trust is an organization that implements programs to protect parrots—both companion parrots and those in the wild. Their goal is “saving wild parrots from extinction and ensuring optimal care for companion parrots.” When it comes to wild parrots, World Parrot Trust is involved in “groundbreaking field research, hands-on conservation programs, habitat protection, education and awareness programs, lobbying for better protections for parrots, and supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and release of parrots caught in illegal trade.” When it comes to companion parrots, they support parrot owners by providing information on proper care, and they encourage the adopting and re-homing of parrots from sanctuaries so that rescue facilities don’t become overcrowded.

the port lincoln parrot, otherwise known as the australian ringneck, is a medium-sized parrot native to australia. known as one of the most common birds of australia, the port lincoln parrot is rated least concern by the iucn.

the australian ringneck parrot is divided into several subspecies. however, they all interbreed so frequently that telling them apart can be near impossible. all of the subspecies share the same characteristics and behavior, just slight variations in color. the port lincoln parrot is one of these subspecies, and is also one of the most common.

port lincoln parrots live in flocks, which can either be relatively small or upwards of thirty. port lincoln parrots are monogamous and mate for life. they typically lay 4-5 eggs in a clutch.

this parrot doesn’t face many threats, and has a large population; however, recently the rainbow lorikeet, introduced into the western part of their range, has been competing for nesting space. this has led to permitted culls of rainbow lorikeets. however, no significant impact on the population of port lincoln parrots has yet been noted.

the port lincoln parrot has a varied diet, and consumes fruits, leaves, flowers, nectar, and bulbs, along with grain and seeds. they are viewed as an agricultural pest by some, as they have been known to decimate orchards and wheat crops when native sources of food have low production.

We rarely notice the abundance of flying insects in the air. In this short video, I take advantage of the lighting at the time to show the incredible number of flying insects darting around that are normally unseen.

In the first part of the video, the sky is clear, with the sun just out of view to the top of the screen. The insects appear as bright flashes, as they reflect sunlight back towards the viewer. This is equivalent to an optical phenomenon well-known in microscopy called dark-field imaging, where an intense light source is off-axis, so that only highly reflective or refractive objects are seen.

In the second part of the video, the clouds come across and we see the insects backlit in silhouette. The clouds seems to change colour, which is due to refraction of the off-axis sunlight through varying thicknesses of water vapour in the clouds.

The video was taken with a long telephoto lens and a shallow depth of field, centred on the Grey Box eucalyptus leaf tips (where you can also see some spider silk shimmering via the same optical effect as the insects). So the depth of air in which we can see the insects is only about 1 metre or less. As I changed the focus, there were just as many flying insects in any other focal plane.

The birds in the audio are mostly red wattlebirds and rainbow lorikeets.
