Inside Vasily Podkolzin’s Canucks journey: Country music, movie nights and lessons from the Sedins By Harman Dayal
Quinn Hughes was sitting in a dimly lit Seattle movie theatre on a Friday night, playing the big brother role. It was Vasily Podkolzin and Nils Höglander’s first-ever NHL road trip, so Vancouver’s star defender invited them out to watch a movie with him and Elias Pettersson.
Hughes was engrossed in the film. In the middle of the action, he glanced to his left and saw that Höglander was snoring, fast asleep. Then Hughes turned to his right — Podkolzin was knocked out too.
“I heard (“Dune”) was a great movie so I grabbed those guys and said, ‘Let’s go watch,'” said Hughes. “It’s very complicated. I would compare it to ‘Interstellar’ — even when a guy speaks English, he won’t understand some of the things.
“Those guys didn’t have a chance,” he added with a laugh. “They didn’t understand a single word. I don’t even know if they knew what the movie was about. Hogs slept for two hours and Podz was like 30 minutes.”
Podkolzin laughed thinking back to the memory. “Oh my God, it was horrible. I didn’t understand anything,” he said.
Hughes made it up by organizing a movie night later in the year to watch “The Batman,” which went much more smoothly.
