Online publication Uusi Suomi (siirryt toiseen palveluun) covers the local fallout from the decision to restrict tourist visas for Russian citizens.
While most residents in the border town of Virolahti—which has a crossing point in the village of Vaalimaa—understood the decision taken by the government, they told the newspaper that they are suffering from the consequences.
A large portion of Vaalimaa's economy had been catered towards Russian tourists looking to shop in the EU. While the Finnish frontier town had been suffering since the Covid pandemic as restrictions cut down tourism, traffic queues at the border are nonexistent these days.
Two of the large shopping malls in Vaalimaa that benefited from border tourism are the Scandinavian Shopping Centre and luxury oriented Zsar Outlet Village, located a little over half a kilometre from the border checkpoint. Now their shops are notably deserted.
Kaisa Hänninen, a retail manager at the Zsar Outlet Village shared her thoughts with Uusi Suomi.
"I don't take a position on the visa issue itself, but I feel that the business community in Vaalimaa and South-East Finland in general has been a victim. It's as if the rug has been pulled out from under their feet," she said.
With the parking lots of the shopping centres empty and some of the stores in the shopping centres closing up, it gives the impression that the whole complex is closed down.
"Many Finns also have the impression that Zsar has gone out of business. This is not the case, we serve our customers every day," Hänninen said.
Of Finland's border crossings into Russia, Vaalimaa is the most southern and typically the busiest.
"It is clear that the amount of cross-border traffic has a direct impact on the vitality of the municipality. At its peak, three and a half million people passed through the Vaalimaa border crossing a year, and now the traffic has almost stopped," Virolahti municipal manager Veli-Matti Pulli told the paper.
Nuclear option
Energy firms Helen and Fortum are considering building small-scale nuclear reactors, Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reports.
As the energy crisis looms over Europe and Finland, nuclear energy is increasingly seen as a viable alternative.
However, a major concern is the long timeline associated with traditionally large power plants. For example, Olkiluoto 3 took 17 years to build and cost nearly three times as much before its completion. The nuclear power plant was completed earlier this year and is set to begin full energy production in December.
One of the major projects currently being researched in Finland is a small-scale nuclear power plant designed for district heating undertaken by LUT University and the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT).
HS writes that Fortum has planned to launch a two-year study this week on the conditions for additional small nuclear power—and nuclear power in general—in Finland and Sweden.
"There are now big ambitions for small-scale nuclear power, but it is important that we proceed very carefully and do not rush headlong in one direction or another," Executive Vice President for Generation at Fortum Simon-Erik Ollus told HS.
One of the biggest hurdles for nuclear energy is the legislation surrounding it. Finland's current nuclear energy law assumes that each nuclear reactor must go through a cumbersome decision-in-principle and licensing process separately.
The current Fortum-owned and operated nuclear power plant has an output of 500 megawatts. The LUT University-VTT nuclear project in comparison would have an output between 20-50 megawatts, which would be enough power to heat a city the size of Lappeenranta, or roughly 70,000 people.
Blustery conditions
Tabloid Iltasanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) covered a strong thunderstorm front that arrived from the west late on Sunday evening.
The weather system was accompanied by gusts of up to 40 metres per second in sea areas, one of the highest wind speeds ever recorded in Finland.
The storm front passed over the southern coast of Finland from Hankoniemi eastwards at midnight.
Eveliina Tuominen, meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, said that strong wind gusts on the south coast have blown down trees.
A low pressure system is forecast to extend over Finland, and winds will continue to be strong in maritime areas. In the early morning, coastal winds were around 19 metres per second.
The weather in the coming week will be mainly cloudy but cool.
By Tuesday, new showers will develop in the southern and central parts of the country.
From Wednesday onwards, the weather will be clear across most of the country and temperatures may dip below 10 degrees in the south. Isolated snow showers may occur in northern Finland.

Don’t Mess with Texas! Pierce Bainbridge “Expands”… While More Partners Quit
As we shelter-in to combat the global Covid-19 crisis, social media has been abuzz about the new Netflix train wreck of a documentary that is The Tiger King.  For those partial to such entertainment, the recent events at Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP has likely been a treat.  The wreckage has been non-stop, the most recent including:
John Mark Pierce ousted as managing partner for Ponzi-scheme-like financial foul play.
Name Partner David L. Hecht is gone from the firm leaving behind brutal commentary from his partners and the media.
Two lawsuits filed against the firm related to questionable lending practices. A quote reported in Law360 from a Philadelphia lawyer, who claims in one of the suits that Pierce Bainbridge reneged on a settlement agreement, seems to capture potential root causes of the torrent of issues plaguing the firm.
Mukasey Frenchman & Sklaroff LLP has filed to withdraw as counsel for Pierce Bainbridge in connection with ex-partner Don Lewis’s lawsuits. The Mukasey filing suggests ethical concerns are preventing its continued representation. By cutting ties the Mukasey firm took a different approach than the two other firms who have represented Pierce Bainbridge in connection with Lewis. Putney Twombly Hall & Hirson LLP (Michael D. Yim) and Littler Mendelson ( Jeanine Conley) remain loyal Pierce Bainbridge foot soldiers apparently willing to continue to “swallow some risk,” an expression used by John Pierce to describe Pierce Bainbridge attorneys.
Around 30 attorneys have quit Team Pierce in the last several months. An updated roster of defectors is below.
The Mass Exodus Continues
The carnage appears never-ending, two additional partners have quit — Franklin Velie and Jonathan Kortmansky. Both Velie and Kortmansky were previously partners at Sullivan & Worcester LLP; both have landed at BraunHagey & Borden LLP.  Kortmansky, similar to Michael Pomerantz (formerly of Grais & Ellsworth) before him, has removed Pierce Bainbridge from his LinkedIn.
Kortmansky’s apparent shame, stands in stark contrast to the commentary both he and Velie offered when joining the firm.
“I am delighted to be joining Pierce Bainbridge and to be able to offer our clients the extraordinary advantages this dynamic firm offers. Pierce Bainbridge is stocked with talented, experienced litigators and, importantly, seasoned trial lawyers.” ~ Franklin Velie
“Pierce Bainbridge is at the apex of trial skills and innovation, and it is an honor and privilege to join a firm so prepared to meet the 21st century needs of its clients.” ~Jonathan Kortmansky
It appears that like many before, Velie and Kortmansky were suckered in by John Pierce.
Kortmansky is not the only ex-Pierce Bainbridge partner attempting to hide the fact that he was associated with Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP; even name partner David “like a cult member” Hecht is attempting to cleanse his record of any affiliation with the firm.
Hecht’s apparent embarrassment stands in stark contrast to his prior Pierce-lite musing that “we are fixated on world domination;” a claim Hecht made in an January 2019 interview with Above the Law; an amusing statement given the calamitous Pierce Bainbridge fall from grace.
Messing with Texas – Pierce Bainbridge Enters the Lone Star State
The bad news has not stopped the previously self-proclaimed “Fastest Growing Law Firm in the History of the World,” from continuing expansion efforts.  The newest stop:  Austin, Texas.  The office was “Co-Founded” by Pierce Bainbridge “Associate” Jonathan Raymond Dillion who also claims to have “Co-Founded” the firm’s New York Office.  (A screenshot from Dillon’s LinkedIn page is below.)
Oddly, however, the firm’s webpage makes no mention of an office in Texas.  Be that as it may,  one Texas connection of which we are aware is a UCC filing dated July 2019.  The filing specifically refers to the “Uniform Commercial Code of Texas” as controlling.  As Pierce Bainbridge had no Texas operations at the time, this suggests a Pierce Bainbridge funder located in the Lone Star State.
                                                                            “Big Hat, No Cattle”
The personal free-fall of firm founder John Mark Pierce has been breathtaking, Pierce has been exposed badly as the quintessential case of the “emperor has no clothes;” or, as they say in Texas, “Big Hat, No Cattle.” For example, one of Pierce’s many ridiculous statements….
Pierce’s hyperbolic prophecy is yet another example of far more Delusion than Reality from the Pierce Bainbridge founder.
The Crown Princes of Pierce Bainbridge Dishonesty
Firm partners Christopher N. LaVigne and Denver G. Edwards have embraced and adopted the dishonest ways of the defrocked King Pierce.  According to Lewis:
“LaVigne and Edwards filed an action pro se, about internal firm issues, and they lied under oath.  Their lies were financially motivated.  They lied to protect Pierce, smear me, undermine my allegations of financial misconduct, which LaVigne had complained about himself, and to ensure their paychecks kept flowing.”
This hallmark deceit was on display when Pierce Bainbridge last opened a new office.  Indeed, while the future of the firm’s Austin operations is unclear, Pierce’s commentary when the firm opened in Boston, juxtaposed with reality, may provide insight.  In covering the opening in Boston, Meghan Tribe provided a platform for Pierce in The American Lawyer:
“We are building an army of killers on a highly collaborative platform,” said founder John Pierce, promising his young firm would “take over Boston in short order.”
A little over a year later, with the recent departure of partner Conor McDonough, it appears the number of Pierce Bainbridge attorneys “taking over Boston” currently stands at Zero.  (The Pierce Bainbridge website no longer lists the firm’s attorneys in any office.) If so, we hope McDonough was kind enough to turn off the lights.
The lights might be on elsewhere, however. As recently reported by LawFuel, former Pierce Bainbridge partners Yavar Bathaee and Brian Dunne have founded a new firm Bathaee Dunne LLP. The new firm remains a mystery but does appear to maintain close ties with Pierce Bainbridge and could see more departed PB attorneys join.

WESTFIELD, Mass. (The Westfield News) —The Westfield District Court honored one of its own yesterday, renaming the building and having a dedication ceremony in honor of Westfield-born Justice John M. Greaney.
The ceremony, which was attended by several elected officials and notable members of law, honored Greaney for his long career in the court system and beyond, which included time as a justice for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, among other judicial positions. The Westfield District Court is located on Elm Street, and currently bears Greaney’s name on the front façade.
Westfield courthouse re-dedicated to retired Judge John Greaney
Justice John M. Greaney stands beside the plaque that honored his service to the Massachusetts and local court systems.
“It’s significant because I’ve lived in Westfield all my life,” Greaney said of the honor. “This is the court I worked at in law school and practiced law as a lawyer. To be honored this way brings me full circle.”
Greaney served as a judge for 35 years in Massachusetts. In addition to his service on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, Greaney served as the presiding judge of the Hampden County Housing Court, which was the second court of its kind in Massachusetts and the first outside of Boston, according to Judge Philip A. Contant, First Justice of the Westfield District Court. He also served as a Justice for Massachusetts Superior Court and the Massachusetts Appeals court, becoming the latter’s Chief Justice in 1984. He also was the director of the Macaronis Institute for Trial and Appellate Advocacy at Suffolk University Law School for seven years.
Previous to becoming a judge, Greaney also spent time in the Air National Guard and worked as a lawyer for Ely and King in Springfield for 10 years. However, according to Greaney it was his time at the court in Westfield working for Justice Garvey as a student intern beginning in 1961 that inspired him to become a judge.
“I was struck with how he dispensed justice and compassion,” Greaney said.
Greaney now works as a counsel for Springfield law firm Buckley, Richardson and Gelinas.
Among those in attendance were Rep. John Velis, his uncle, former Representative and judge Peter A. Velis, Sen. Don Humason, President-elect of the Hampden County Bar Association Attorney Travaun Bailey and Westfield Mayor Brian Sullivan.

Pierce Bainbridge: $1,000,000,000 “LIE”, California Bar Investigation, Partners Running for the Exits
The Sky Seems to Be Falling at Pierce Bainbridge and Don Lewis’ Former Partners Appear to Believe They Have No Responsibility
Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP has had tough several months. E-mails, texts and slack exchanges have surfaced portraying the firm in a negative light.  Former partner Don Lewis says the firm’s Managing Partner John Pierce uses “human pawns” to do his bidding.  The list appears to include Michael Yim of Putney Twombly — facing claims of legal malpractice, S. Jeanine Conley of Littler Mendelson — facing claims of “attorney deceit”, as well as Christopher N. LaVigne and Denver G. Edwards – facing potential felony exposure for allegedly lying in sworn affidavits.  Dishonesty at Pierce Bainbridge has also been a Lewis theme, a review of the “The Over the Top Rhetoric” below is remarkably illuminating.
An Ugly Two Weeks
It has been a very rough two weeks for Pierce Bainbridge:
The $1,000,000,000 Misrepresentation.  Lewis said that Pierce and firm General Counsel Carolynn Beck told a litigation funder – Pravati Capital LLC in May 2018 – that a case had a prospective value of $1,000,000,000, which he says Pierce and Beck knew was not true.  United States District Court Judge Anita B. Brody just dismissed the case — threw it out completely — before it even went to trial.  The Pierce Bainbridge so-called $1 Billion Case resulted in zero dollars of recovery.  (The successful defense was led by Ambika Doran, Elizabeth A. McNamara and Alison Brooke Schary of Davis Tremaine LLP, and William T. Hangly and Bonnie M. Hoffman of Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller.)
Lewis said: “No one should be surprised by this, not even Pierce Bainbridge.  The prior lawyer advised his client after 16 months of working on the case to settle for $400,000.  Yet Pierce and Beck were concurrently telling a lender (Pravati) it was worth a mind-boggling $1 BILLION.”
The California State Bar Investigation.  The President of a former Pierce Bainbridge client advised that, after months of the preliminary investigation, the California State Bar has opened a “full-blown investigation” into Pierce and Pierce Bainbridge.  Pierce and Jonathan Sorkowitz handled the case; severe discipline up to, and including, disbarment has been requested.
Partner Exodus.  Six partners hired at the firm within the last year apparently abandoned the Pierce Bainbridge ship.  Michael Winograd, Robert Allen, Jeffrey Alexander, Deborah Renner, Joan Meyer and Susan Winkler (the “Departed Six”).  It is rare for partners to come and go so quickly, for six of them to do so is alarming.
The Over the top Rhetoric
The Departed Six appear to have been duped by Pierce’s over the top embellishment.  In light of recent events, it is fascinating to revisit media coverage concerning their hiring.
Deborah Renner; article December 3, 2018
(Renner has prior law firm experience at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP; Sonnenschein Nath and Rosenthal; and Baker & Hostetler LLP; Renner was widely known as the “lead attorney” for Trustee Irving Picard in unwinding the fraudulent activity of Bernie Madoff).
Pierce:  “Pierce Bainbridge already has the best general commercial, intellectual property, and white-collar practices in the world by a wide margin. . .The most talented lawyers from the top Am Law 200 firms are seeing very clearly that we are the future. This is still just the beginning of the talent the market will see flood to our cutting-edge, mission-oriented, happy-warrior litigation platform in the months to come.”
Jeff Alexander; press release on February 4, 2019
(Alexander has prior law firm experience  at Latham & Watkins; Labaton Sucharow LLP; Bleichmar Fonti & Auld LLP and Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP)
“Our level of talent is simply unmatched at this point. We have built a better mousetrap, pure and simple.” – John Pierce, a former K&L Gates, Latham & Watkins and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan partner.
Pierce: “The traditional Am Law 100 firms simply cannot compete with us in the digital age. We litigate 10 times better, 10 times faster, and at a fraction of the cost. It is not a linear difference—it is exponential.”
Robert Allen; press release on February 13, 2019
Allen has prior law firm experience at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP, Gradstein & Marzano, P.C., McKool Smith Hennigan PC
Allen: “I am excited and privileged to be part of such an energetic team of talented lawyers, unafraid of tackling cutting edge issues in pursuit of effective and efficient justice for its clients.”
Pierce:  “We could not be more thrilled that Tom (Warren) and Rob (Allen) have chosen Pierce Bainbridge as their new home,” said the firm’s Managing Partner John Pierce.  “Both are luminaries in their respective fields and deepen our white-collar and IP benches.  February 2019 has proven to be another huge month for the firm as we continue rocketing toward market domination.”
Michael Winograd and Joan Meyer; press release on March 4, 2019.
(Winograd has prior law firm experience at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP; Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati LLP and Ropes & Gray)
Winograd: “This was an opportunity that I just could not pass up. . . elite litigators cherry-picked from top firms and government offices. . . It’s an exciting time to join Pierce Bainbridge. As our current trajectory shows, the sky is the limit.”
Meyer: “It’s a privilege to join Pierce Bainbridge.  It is a dynamic, top-quality firm that has a new vision about how lawyers serve their clients.  It is growing so fast because clients want the drive and initiative this firm brings to the table.  I am proud to be a part of it.”
Pierce: “Mike (Winograd) and Joan (Meyer) take our white-collar and complex litigation capabilities to a whole new level . . . [it is] the best proof that our new way of doing things in the digital age works.”
Susan Winkler hiring; press release on March 12, 2019
(Winkler previously worked for 25 years in the United States Attorneys Office in Boston, Massachusetts)
Winkler: “It is an honor to join Pierce Bainbridge as it opens the Boston office. . . the opportunity to join these elite trial practitioners with their vision for effective and efficient top-flight litigation was too exciting to pass up.  I am happy to be part of the team.”
Pierce: “With the addition of Susan (Winkler), Frank (Velie) and Jonathan (Kortmansky), our white-collar capabilities have become truly unparalleled.”
“Unmatched,” “Phenomenon,” “Elite,” “Top-Flight,” “Unparalleled,” “Best in the World,” “Most Talent,” “Wide Margin,” and “Sky is the Limit.”
Lewis says: “These words are better suited to John Pierce’s propensity to lie.  That is exactly what Pierce Bainbridge did about false allegations against me, they lied.”
Interestingly, Five of the Departed Six have experience in white-collar crime and/or fraud.
The lawyer for Lewis’ former partners (all of whom remain at the firm, with the exception of one) recently argued in Court that they bear no responsibility for the wrongs done to their former partner.   Lewis says: “They want the title, they definitely want the money, but they don’t want the responsibility.  That’s just not right.”

Hecht, Doug Curran, Eric M. Creizman, James D. Bainbridge, John Mark Pierce, Jonathan Sorkowitz, Maxim Price, Melissa Madrigal, Mike Pomerantz  and Patrick Bradford ***
