WIP Wednesday💛💛💛

'tis Wednesday! I've been looking forward to sharing this part of the WIP, because I've been enjoying writing greatly these past few days (probably because I'm working again as of next week and inevitably won't have as much time)!

Here are some more festival shenanigans, following on from last week's WIP, featuring Elyse, tarts, and a very drunken Hrongar....

"Where's Balgruuf, Elyse? I thought you were with him," Hrongar drawled just as he finished what was most certainly not his first tankard of mead that night based on his breath alone, taking a seat beside her on one of the benches beneath the Gildergreen where she had hidden herself away from the main bustle of the festival. "He was… pretty damn eager to spend the festival wi' you."

Having been caught by him in the middle of eating some of the tarts that she had taken far too great of a liking to because of just how delectable and cheap they were, she had to quickly wipe some of the pastry crumbs from around her mouth before she could properly speak. "We decided to check out a few of the stalls together, before he realised the time and said that he needed to return to Dragonsreach soon…" She then pulled the remaining tarts, which had been laid out on a cloth beside her, closer to her leg and hopefully out of sight, though the one she had been eating rested on her lap. "He's probably back there now, if you're looking for him?"

His face scrunched up at her response. "Idiot had an opportunity…" he attempted to mutter under his breath, just for it to come out much louder than he likely anticipated, and leaving her feeling puzzled by what he meant. "I'm not looking for 'im. Just thought the two of you would be together." He then shrugged, and leaned back. "By th' way… You're not hidin' those cakes well."

Scowling, she grabbed her half-eaten treat, then bit into it. She had been very much enjoying not having company as she indulged herself, but it seemed that the drunken Hrongar was there to stay given that he was now reclining to her side. She also didn't half feel perplexed by... well, everything he had said.

Once she had finished eating, she remained sat for a few moments, fingers digging into her knees as she contemplated either seeking a new place to finish her remaining tarts, or just letting him continue to linger in her personal space. Or perhaps she would even try to seek out Lydia, Dagny, and Mila on their 'sweet treat tour of Whiterun' just to get her mind away from the awkwardness.

She settled on returning to Dragonsreach.

Just as she stood up, and ensured that her remaining tarts had been carefully bundled away into the satchel which she had with her, a large hand suddenly grasped hold of her wrist. She turned to face Hrongar and glared at him as he held on tightly and didn't allow her to pull herself free.

"Jus'… before y' go," he mumbled, his voice starting to slur even more than it had been previously. "He's got walls built up. But… I think a dragon can bring 'em down."

#meg has done some writing #dragonborn oc elyse #fic - the perfect storm #yes that vendor absolutely was scamming balgruuf in the wip from last week but he didn't think to question it lol #(though i am intending to reduce that price tag from previously because i think it's a bit too extortionate in hindsight!!!!)#but let's just say that elyse got more than double for the same price!!#and we all know that there's that goddamn markup anyway at events and stuff. i went out a few weeks back and my god. the prices.#hrongar is the wingman which balgruuf neither wants nor needs. or even knows about. but is getting anyway.

I understand why a lot of the non-harvest related festivals happen in the summer, but also it’d be nice if they did some in the fall too :(

#quilleth in real life #was going to go to a nearby faerie festival but it's going to thunderstorm #and they only do it one weekend a year and every year something comes up #granted i also have like 3 surprise vet expenses too so i can't really afford to go even if it weren't going to thunderstorm #we have nice weather in september and october too :( i want to go to a festival dressed up like a faerie then :(#and the ren faire near us upped their prices so just to get in is like $100 #i get it they need to pay their people but also uh...that's a lot of money #and we've gone there so often over the years that there's not much draw in general beyond window shopping #and my husband stopping by to talk to his buddies with the jousting troupe #and $100 is a lot for that when their vendors have their own online shops #i don't mind the harvest fests generally but they are not the fun costumed things

I’m in the middle of house hunting right now, and I’m also at the teenage boy point in my transition where my voice is cracking on every other word

Coupled with the fact that I have a chronic illness that makes me look a lot younger than I am, I could probably pass as a thirteen year old kid right now

So every time I greet an estate agent (they’re usually already wary because of the blue hair and the rainbow walking stick) I have to squeak through saying ‘hi yes, I’m here for the house viewing, please show me round’ and then pray they realise I am actually a Real Human Adult who can afford to be there and not some elfin runt who got very lost

When they ask what my career is and I say fantasy writer, it’s a whole other level of questionable looks lmao. This is why it’s good my partner works in finance

#I did have one vendor politely say I was a ‘creative type’ when I explained what I do for work #so that was kinda funny #my partner is all serious adult working in a financial office job #with sensible coloured hair and smart suits #and I rock up in jeans with blue hair and rainbow clothes everywhere like PLEASE TAKE ME SERIOUSLY TOO #lmaooooo #saw a promising house today I am hoping against hope we don’t get priced out of #house hunting is fun but so stressful #cannot wait to be done and settled somewhere #jasechats #yelling in the tumblr tags about my life again how nostalgic

I was ad free-less for 24 hours because the credit card I used to pay for it last year expired and it took a while for my new card to process, and goddamn how do people on mobile live without ad free? The ads would keep the videos in posts from loading, I forgot what absolute shit that was, and they're like every 3 posts now

#40 bucks a year is a small price to pay to make this app tolerable #i didnt see any bad ads and in fact saw ads from vendors i actually buy from like Potomac beads and fire & bone #but still #seeing the same Potomac ad 3 times in a row is annoying #crap #on desktop the experience was the same as usual because xkit #but i mostly use mobile because i waste a lot of time at work on here to spite chuck

okay this is void-screaming again sorry but i am so incredibly unhappy that every "no amaz*n, use public library!" post specifically name-drops libby. libby is not some kind of cool nonprofit, it's not synonymous with library services, it's owned by rakuten & it charges your library extortionary prices.

your public library may have libby; it may have cloudlibrary or hoopla; it may not have robust digital services at all. all of these platforms are expensive and libraries have little ability to negotiate because there are only three major vendors in the first place.

you should still get a library card: they're free, libraries do all kinds of cool stuff that you might not know about, and public libraries leverage the number of cardholders when they ask for funding. you can always ask for services you'd like to see, but there are often good reasons that libraries don't offer the latest, shiniest thing

#irredeemable whining #vocational awe diaries :')#this is because we dropped libby for budget reasons & shifted to CL (much cheaper; has some cool features; more responsive support)#and patrons have been incredibly unrelentingly rude about it #library tech in general is very monopolistic; it's a niche market with very specific needs #all of these third-party vendors raise serious questions about collection stability (see e.g. wiley textbooks) & privacy policies #what i WANT is a PUBLIC OPTION where libraries own the servers & a central consortium negotiates with publishers directly over prices
