Poison for the Fairies [Veneno para las hadas] (1986)
Tumblr media
Don’t tell your mom I hit you! The nastiness of this movie is complete in how self-contained it is, two little girls torturing one another with no clear outcome in mind. There is fairy tale logic and then whatever this is, no parents nearby to to save anyone. Everything seems to operate on the id; How can I fit in? How can I be cool? The divide between spiritualism and rationalism is challenging when the only guide at hand is another girl of similar level of development. And at that level, the title of the film and effectively its content is more or less nonsense. “Poison for the fairies” is a euphemism. Fairies don’t exist. Witches barely do. It’s all about controlling someone, gaining mastery over them, in some form or other. Roman Catholicism lingers over us all. Verónica becomes a monster by trying to claim Flavia’s innocence in the form of her, losing it all to an inferno.
This could have been a really interesting Gothic horror tale. The specter of colonialism lingers over the two girls, classes separated by the legacy of the past and brought together by circumstance. The British formal school is perfect as a template for creepy events to unfold. And creepy things do happen, but it’s almost in spite of what ever else occurs onscreen. Action is listless, these two girls sparring without rhyme or reason, pushed apart simply because the narrative demands it to happen. It’s sleepy and boring rather than engrossing and transgressive. This could have been a document of justice misplaced but instead didn’t know what it wanted to be.
THE RULES
SIP
Someone says 'spider' or 'witch'.
Someone asks a question of a parent.
The puppy shows up in a scene.
BIG DRINK
Red paint blood.
Piano playing in a scene.

can you recommend any movies with creepy little girls in them?
i take it "creepy" here doesn't necessarily mean evil or violent girls, but unsettling? off the top of my head: the child (1977), veneno para las hadas (1986), the innocents (1961), the appointment (1981) (the girl is into her early teens but still), the bad seed (1956), kill baby kill (1966), alice sweet alice (1976), audrey rose (1977), the haunting of julia (1977), laurin (1989), let the right one in (2008), the exorcist (1973), the orphan (2009) (sort of), ringu (1998), hmmm idk there are many that i'm forgetting for sure.
