on the worse days, you think, if you could just get a grip. find purchase for your fingertips. you are small and you get good at finding space when you are a nothing with no place. on the worse days, you think, if i’d quit chewing on my fingernails i could have dug them in. if my teeth hadn’t come out crooked and clumsy like tear-blurred words they could have somehow gotten through flesh and through that thick goddamn skull. nine lives down and the cards are on the table, secondhand news tells me you’re stable. i don’t think they know what that means. my head is full of frightened children that hide from gory scenes.
