The thing that absolutely blows my mind about some people who seem to think they're MHA fans but clearly are not is that they'll be like "MHA would have been so much better if ____" and then they proceed to fill in the blank with THE MOST. GENERIC. OVERDONE. PREMISE. IMAGINABLE.

Everyone when MHA came out: MHA is so cool it takes old tropes and subverts them and/or turns them on their heads!

"Everyone" now: MHA would be so much better if it was just the old generic tropes recycled again and again and again because I cannot imagine having to read a story I can't already predict everything about just from tropes and also I have no interest in realizing that other cultures have different concepts of what makes a good story, no no no I just want the same rehashed Hollywood pandering bullshit a million times please.

I thought Viz’s official English version rendering “Sherly” as “Sherlock” was bad enough, but hey it turns out it’s even worse - they kind of messed up the whole sentence??

Viz: “Tonight, you didn’t come here as a detective… you came as a friend. But … I’ve already lost. Sherlock. ”

'But... I’ve already lost.' alters the intended meaning of this sentence (僕の負けだ) considerably. It is vague as heck and can be interpreted a number of different ways (like, was he talking about the moriarty plan??). It obscures the fact that William was conceding defeat to Sherlock in this game of two. He was not saddened or disheartened. It’s a moment of both intense joy and sorrow, perhaps in equal measure, as William finally saw crystal clear Who Sherlock is—a friend who had sought his own friendship all along—and the lengths Sherlock was willing to go to for that friendship.

(It’s my current working theory that the translator read the next sentence where William was talking about how the boards/scaffolding won’t support that much weight for longer and that fate will likely show no mercy, and decided that that sentence was simply a reflection of William feeling disheartened by the situation…)

Ugh.

Both the anime and fan translations are excellent:

Anime: “You came here not as a detective, but as a friend, didn’t you? You’ve bested me. … Sherly.”

Fan: “So you came here not as a “detective” … But rather as a “friend”, … It’s my loss. Sherly…”

And while we are on this subject, Viz also messed up the translation for the first time Sherlock called William “Liam.”

Also, that night at 221 B, Sherlock used “Professor William James Moriarty” but the translation simply said “William James Moriarty.”

These choices are perplexing. I’d like to think these are errors, because it’s even worse if these are deliberate imo.

But at the end of the day, these translators are probably overworked and underpaid. Because MTP only comes out 4 times a year, by the time they get the latest volume, they’d probably already forgotten what the last volume was about. That, and working against a tight deadline, would make mulling over word choices and ensuring consistency throughout the series difficult. So this is still not a knock on individual translators, but Viz should do better.

the way mika took her step with shima knowing she'd be rejected but it *has* actually let her move on. she still has some conflicted feelings but she sees the way the wind is blowing and does wish both mitsumi and shima well.

and the way that sometimes having people outside of your typical friend circle lets you be open in a different way. her friendship with nao-chan has helped her self-confidence just as much as her friendship with her peers, just in a different way.

but also like, she was able to speak to nao-chan about all this *not caring that mukai was there*. the fact that she's admitting this stuff not caring he's there is so huge on her part because she's spent so long trying to appeal to everyone in her age group and "fit in" but she's finally letting herself move past that. she always wanted a romantic relationship because she wanted a relationship in which she was seen and accepted for herself (and she didn't think those those two conditions were compatible due to her low self-esteem). and because of that she wasn't actually in the position to have a healthy romance. but now she's no longer actively seeking that acceptance if she does now start dating someone it won't be *for* the acceptance but because she wants to be in the relationship and likes the other person. but nao-chan still gives her that reassurance she will "definitely find someone" because she knows enough to know they're alike in that aspect.

and mika's so relieved too the entire time she's sharing this. mukai actively calls her hyper and obviously he doesn't have the full context but even he knows this is rare for her.

it's a relief for her to let go.

#nao-chan in this chapter also broke my heart in a good way. she was so worried before the trip but she got the reassurance she needed #it always throws me when I realise how she puts people like mitsumi and mika above herself in some ways #but both mika and nao-chan were both able to get reassurance out of mika venting....#also also I loved the irony inherent in all three of these people having pieces of the puzzle that is shimamitsu #but just flat out not addressing that angle at all #skip to loafer #stl manga spoilers #skip and loafer
