i just wish to reiterate the well known fact of vanitas' japanese translation being actually really bittersweet.

"it's my reason for being born. it is because i am darkness, that you both belong to the light, able to exist there. if that isn't 'working together' i don't know what is."

vs. the english version.

"because i am darkness. and i do stand by your side. i'm the shadow that you cast. how much closer could i be?"

it's not just a case of "lol i am darkness", but that's how the english version of the game makes it seem. it's a case of "because i am on this side, you get to be on that side". vanitas is jealous of ventus because HE is the one to be on the side of light, to have people that love and care for him. but he's resigned to his fate, he was created from the darkness in ventus' heart, and he knows that in the end, he doesn't belong in the realm of light.

but he doesn't want ven to know his jealousy. he's too prideful to accept help from anyone, especially ventus.

ventus: "there is no need to bother with who is with the light and who is with the darkness, i am me and you are you, it's fine to live freely the way we want."

vanitas: "freely? yeah, i am living freely... in this way."

vanitas HESITATES for a split second. he hears ventus basically asks him if he really wants to vanish into the darkness he was born from, and vanitas hesitates. he doesn't want to accept his other half's offer, he's too prideful.

ventus: "is living trapped in the darkness freedom to you?"

no, it isn't, but vanitas won't admit that. instead, his reply?

vanitas: "this is how i chose to live my life."

ventus: "i see."

vanitas doesn't say 'yes' to ventus, he DEFLECTS the question by saying "this is the life i live". he says 'chose', but he never got the choice. he was created because ven had the choice, he chose not to summon the 𝑥-blade. that's the reason vanitas was created in the first place, so it could be formed another way.

Lots of focus on Vanitas as an entity who gained his own sentience outside of simply being "Darkness", and Ventus' crippling damage and growing insanity from the instability of being filled only with Light. It's a fate that is just as dangerous as being only Darkness. They ache for each other, and may find that they're the only ones who can truly understand each other. 🖤

The VanVen ship, what do you think? (Ventus Vanitas)

Hmmmmmm ok I've thought about this one a lot

Venvan is an interesting ship that I would like a lot more if Vanitas didn't call them brothers. I think that their dynamic would be very interesting, pure light and pure darkness, and it would be like the giant extroverted ball of energy vs the introverted quiet emo and I adore that. They're like the "somebody will die" "of fun!" meme and I adore them for that. I think that they both need to go through a lot of therapy together, and need to become more accustomed to the others existence.

Personally I think I prefer them in an au where they are entire seperate beings. I don't have problems with nobody/somebody ships (soroku, kainami) but because Vanitas does see them as brothers I think it gives me a bit on an ick just from that.

But other than that I love their dynamic especially in Vanitas's death scene in kh3. "What I am is darkness" is a great final line for him, although I personally hope he doesn't come back as a character because I think it's just a perfect send off for him. I think it would be an interesting pair to see, the fanart and fics are top tier, I just think I enjoy more of the idea of them than what they are in canon. 7.8/10, I understand why people are turned off by it but I think they're interesting

Roxas: you're just not as easy going as Ventus! Y'know he's just more flexible, and, and, mellow, that's all. *Walks off*

Ventus, trying to blow things over: w-well people are different...!

Oooooh good question!

So, just to lay out our roles to fill, Data Date took place in the digitized version of Jiminy's journal, after the events of Coded. Data Sora (who has the approximate powers of kh1 Sora) and Data Riku (Jiminy's journal taken form with the approximate powers of kh1 and end of CoM Riku) go on a date that Data Riku planned as a bit of surprise. It's also pertinent to mention that Data Riku has control over the datascape itself in the fic.

With that in mind, I'd need to see who would be best aligned for which.

Lauriam and Brain would be the easiest I would say, just because of their specific roles in union cross (but, more specifically, with Brain being the one with the book of prophecy). At that, I think it would be interesting to give Brain Data Riku's set of powers, but I think *who* exactly sets the surprise...

Ha! Okay. So if I redid the concept of Data Date with Brain and Lauriam, I would have Lauriam surprise Brain. Perhaps, in the past, Brain used his set of powers to create a secret place for Lauriam (likely akin to the flower field from Lauriam's dream), or, if I decide he *doesn't* have the same set of powers as Riku, he can find such a place to present to Lauriam. In the present, Lauriam guides Brain to this secret garden/flower field of his and they have a picnic date.

Idk I think it could be sweet, although their interactions would naturally be different from Data Soriku's more...humorous ones😂😂

But I mean, if we assume the only prerequisite for rewriting data date is that it takes place with the characters within a datascape, is that not UX canon?😉😂

Ajjananana okay okay. Ventus and Vanitas. So with them, I'd be hard pressed to place either in Data Riku's specific role, so if I rewrote the fic with them, either both or neither of them would have Riku's specific set of powers. That being said, in the spirit of making things harder for them and eaiser for me, I would go with the latter, just because I don't trust VenVan in the same room to be okay and normal about having world changing powers😂

So, concept. One of them goes through the pain of setting up a picnic date with food they put together themselves. Whether the food was made well or not can become a talking point, and the setting is specifically the "secret place" of the person who sets up the date (so I could appropriate that interaction from Data Date in which Sora complains about the directions he was given). More than likely, even though they're both a bit prickly, whoever set it up would feel frustrated if the other doesn't properly (in their eyes) recognize how hard they tried for this. So they wouldn't completely seem to be on good terms, but their actions would betray them. The one surprised would be betrayed by their clear enjoyment of the event and how they're actually touched by the gesture, even if they don't properly convey this, and the other would be betrayed by the simple act of this—that they would give up the secrecy of their "secret spot" to give the other a good time. Idk I think it could be simultaneously a bit fun and cute😂
