2020-Vera Lynn
Tumblr media
Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (née Welch; 20 March 1917 – 18 June 2020) was an English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II.

She is honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA).

In 2009, at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK Albums Chart with the compilation album We'll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn.[1] In 2014, she released the collection Vera Lynn: National Treasure and in 2017, she released Vera Lynn 100, a compilation album of hits to commemorate her centenary—it was a No. 3 hit, making her the first centenarian performer to have a Top 10 album in the charts.

For those of you who’ve never heard of Vera Lynn (and won’t get this), she was a wholesome British singer who rose to fame in the years leading up to World War II and performed for troops abroad with such ballads as We’ll Meet Again and (There’ll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover. She became known as “The Forces’ Sweetheart” and remained popular long after the end of the war.
Sadly Vera Lynn died in 2020, aged 103.

Year-End Poll #3: 1952
Tumblr media
For our third poll evaluating the top hits of the 1950s, we're moving on to 1952. The Billboard year-end charts are still compiled in a top 30 list via the methods described in the previous poll (jukebox performance, record/sheet music retail sales, etc). With acts like Johnnie Ray, we are starting to see a glimpse into the major genre shifts that are to come in mainstream music. But it will be a few years until we see that change take hold. At this time, it was much more common to see composers and instrumentals featured on the charts.

Dame Vera Lynn's '40s glamour was a lesson in style with substance. She remains synonymous with the gutsy, lipstick-wearing glam of the Second World War.
Vera Lynn was so much more than a singer. She was one of those rare people who came to sum up the whole spirit of an era.
Say her name, and images come to mind of those dark days when Britain stood alone and her music brought hope with a dash of defiance.
While naturally the sentiments of We'll Meet Again particularly resonated during the war when there were so many sad partings, they are timeless and strike straight at the heart.
