Rise Ponderings:
The Turtles With Japanese Names
I've seen a lot of headcanons lately that support the "Rise boys' given names ARE their colours and they only got the artist names later on" narrative so I'd like to share my own.
Rise Splinter is undoubtedly very Americanised but I think that despite him forsaking his familial duties and old life, he’s still Japanese, is still a Hamato. So, subconsciously, he gave the boys Japanese names (of their corresponding colours, of course).
On that note, for all that Splinter has Celebrity-Who-Gives-Their-Kids-Unique-Names energy, I believe that he would still have enough decency to give them somewhat proper Japanese names not just 'Aka', 'Ao', 'Murasaki' and 'Orenji'.
However, for a period of time, the English-colour-names Splinter uses in the show would have been how addressed each other because they are, for the most part, an English-speaking household. Until an eight-year-old April came along insisting that those weren't 'real names', the turtles English names were 'Red', 'Blue' etc.
After adopting 'proper' English names, those became the common form of address, though Splinter still calls them by the English colours because it's a habit for him. They don't mind.
They don’t use their Japanese names often. It’d mostly be during serious-talk time, in official stuff, calling someone by their full name or teasing.
Ironically, in Splinter's (read: my) effort to not be a basic bitch, most of the boys' Japanese names are female. You can bet they tease the shit out of each other about it. The only one that actually takes offense to the teasing is Donnie whose name is very common and recognisable, so he always gets asked why he has it and/or if he realises that it's a girly name.
The Names
*NOTE: I'm using Kanji here. Fair warning, they could be written wrong, so if there are any Japanese speakers out there, do correct me.
Hamato 'Raphael' Shuiro
Tumblr media
Shuiro 朱色 = vermilion
Raph’s name is the only one that isn’t a real given name but I thought it suited him.
Colour Symbolism:
Besides being one of the most dominant colors in Japanese culture, red is associated strongly with authority, strength, sacrifice, passion, joy, and happiness. It's also regarded as an auspicious color in Japan.
Frequently said to have Eldest Daughter Syndrome by the fandom, Raph is the ultimate authority among the brothers. He self-appoints as leader not because he necessarily wants to be, but because as the oldest and the biggest, he feels like it's his responsibility to look after the others. Which often takes great strength and sacrifice. Surface Pressure from Encanto, anyone?
Tumblr media
Furthermore, red, specifically vermilion, is very symbolic in Japanese architecture:
Red is the color of torii – Shinto shrine gates – temples, and traditional daruma dolls. Red is said to scare away evil spirits and represent protection, strength, peace, and power.
All in all, very fitting for the big brother and family protector, if you ask me.
Hamato 'Leonardo' Aoi
Tumblr media
Aoi 青い = blue
Aoi is a unisex name; meaning hollyhock flower when used for girls and blue for boys. I'm using the male meaning for Leo.
Colour Symbolism:
Blue commonly represents the sea and the sky (for which Japan is surrounded) and symbolizes purity, dignity, calmness, stability, security, and fidelity. Blue is also regarded as a lucky colour.
In this case, blue is rather in juxtaposition with Leo's personality, but looking at it from a franchise perspective, blue is indeed a leader's colour.
Tumblr media
Back then, Japanese society was strictly hierarchical and displayed through the colour of their robes. Of the colors that were allowed for common folk, the color blue was work by higher ranking people. It symbolized wealth and prestige, while also remaining a color of the common folk.
That being said, Leo's a little different from his predecessors. Eventually, he will grow into the role of the leader we know and love. But even when he was unburdened from being leader, he was still the strategist. Leo's leadership in fights is a balance between what is uniquely Rise and the mission-mindset of the leaders in blue who came before him, strategies that are fun, wacky and maybe a little unorthodox yet still as effective for the team.
Hamato 'Donatello' Sumire
Tumblr media
Sumire 菫 = violet
Sumire is usually a girl's name but I don’t think Splinter would’ve cared all that much about gender.
Donnie doesn't either and even likes his name, though it has caused him a lot of grief over the years. A lot of people think it's strange for a guy with his personality to have such a feminine name, and he's really sick of having to defend his name after introducing himself. Part of why he wanted 'Donnie'.
Colour Symbolism:
Like in the West, purple in Japanese culture is associated with royalty, as purple dye was rare and only available to those of a higher status. It can also reflect on nobility, spirituality, and wisdom.
Out of everyone, Donnie embraces his colour about the most. His clothes are purple, his tech is purple, his lab is bathed in purple lighting. Purple is Donnie's thing. This, in a way, ties in with the colour's exclusivity back then.
Tumblr media
Flower Symbolism:
In Hanakotoba (flower language), the meaning of violet is sincerity, a small love, and a small bliss. Violets are a common gift, as they are an ideal way to show appreciation for a family member or friend and to express sincerity or love.
I think this is very Donnie. What he lacks in the emotional department, he makes up for  through his tech. He creates things for his family, making them all kinds of personalised gizmo. Sometimes it results in disaster but the intention to help is there. Gift-giving is his love language.
Hamato 'Michelangelo' Mikan
Tumblr media
Mikan 蜜柑 = tangerine
Mikan is a common Japanese girl name. Baby girls named "Mikan" are usually joyful, positive-thinkers, smiley and generally happy people.
Mikey loves his name and doesn't care that it's girly and cute, no matter how the others tease him about it. (SIDE NOTE: I swear the near-matching names wasn't intentional. I was just looking for a name that means mandarin orange for a bit I'm writing).
Colour Symbolism:
Orange is symbolic of love, happiness and the sun.
The youngest of the family, Mikey is optimistic and cheerful. He brings joy and colour to the household through his art. He encourages everyone to be express their love openly and always tries to be supportive.
Tumblr media
Fruit Symbolism:
Besides good fortune, wealth and longevity, the fruit mikan can be tied to family because of its role in Japanese traditions. In Japan, there is a word “Kotatsu de Mikan”, which means:
A family sits around a kotatsu (a traditional Japanese table with an electric heater attached to the underside), watching TV and eating mikan —  the traditional picture of a harmonious family seen in the wintertime.
TLDR; I really love how each turtle has a role to play in the family, how their respective colours are so appropriate for who they are as people, and I wanted their Japanese name to reflect that.
Mikey is all about family. He's the heart, always the peacemaker, always bringing everyone together.

From Justinian to Isaac Comnenus
The fact is that, for the five centuries from Justinian to Isaac Comnenus, the attacks on the empire, from the European side, at any rate, were the attacks of nomad, unorganised, and uncivilised races on a civilised and highly- organised empire. And in spite of anarchy, corruption, and effeminacy at the Byzantine court, civilisation and wealth told in every contest. Greek fire, military science, enormous resources, and the prestige of empire always bore down wild valour and predatory enthusiasm. Just as Russia dominates the Turkoman tribes of Central Asia, as Turkey holds back the valiant Arabs of her eastern frontier, as Egyptian natives with British officers easily master the heroic Ghazis of the Soudan — so the Roman Empire on the Bosphorus beat back Huns, Avars, Persians, Slaves, Bulgarians, Patzinaks, and Russians. We need only to study the history of Russia and of Turkey to learn how the organising ability, the resources, and material arts of great empires outweigh folly, vice, and corruption in the palace.
4. Of course a succession of victorious campaigns implies a succession of valiant armies; and there is nothing on which we need more light than on the exact organisation and national constituents of those Roman armies which crushed Chosroes, Muaviah, Crumn, Samuel, and Hamdanids. They are called conventionally ‘Greeks’; but during the Heraclian, Isaurian ephesus daily tour, and Basilian dynasties there seem to have been no Greeks at all in the land forces. The armies were always composed of a strange collection of races, with different languages, arms, methods of fighting, and types of civilisation. They were often magnificent and courageous barbarians, conspicuous amongst whom were Scandinavians and English, and with them some of the most warlike braves of Asia and of Europe.
National characteristics
The empire made no attempt to destroy their national characteristics, to discourage their native language, religion, or habits. Each force was told off to the service which suited it best, and was trained in the use of its proper weapons. They remained distinct from each other, and wholly distinct from the civil population. But as they could not unite, they seldom became so great a danger to the empire as the Praetorian guard of the Roman army. The organisation and management of such a heterogeneous body of mercenary braves required extraordinary skill; but it was just this skill which the rulers of Byzantium possessed. The bond of the whole was the tradition of discipline and the consciousness of serving the Roman Emperor.
The modern history of Russia and still more the native armies of the British Empire will enable us to understand how the work ©f consolidation was effected. The Queen’s dominions are at this hour defended by men of almost every race, colour, language, religion, costume, and habits. And we may imagine the composite character of the Byzantine armies, if we reflect how distant wars are carried on in the name of Victoria by Hindoos, Musulmans, Pa- thans, Ghoorkas, Afghans, Egyptians, Soudanese, Zanzibaris, Negroes, Nubians, Zulus, Kaffirs, and West Indians, using their native languages, retaining their national habits, and, to a great extent, their native costume.
The Roman Empire was maintained from its centre on the Bosphorus, somewhat as the British Empire is maintained from its centre on the Thames, by wealth, maritime ascendency, the traditions of empire, and organising capacity — always with the great difference that there was no purely Roman nucleus as there is a purely British nucleus, and also that the soldiery of the Roman Empire had no common armament, and was not officered by men of the dominant race, but by capable leaders indifferently picked from any race, except the Latin or the Greek. Dominant race there was none; nation there was none. Roman meant subject of the Emperor; Emperor meant the chief in the vermilion buskins, installed in the Palace on the Bosphorus, and duly crowned by the Orthodox Patriarch in the Church of the Holy Wisdom.

Dominant race there was none; nation there was none. Roman meant subject of the Emperor; Emperor meant the chief in the vermilion buskins, installed in the Palace on the Bosphorus, and duly crowned by the Orthodox Patriarch in the Church of the Holy Wisdom.

The Cycle of the Fire Lords AKA Generational Daddy Issues
You know how in the series finale Ozai declares himself the Phoenix King? I’ve always found that odd, since dragon seems to be the prestige animal of the Fire Nation. However, once I realized what the phoenix in Avatar actually was, it all clicked.
The “phoenix” that Ozai is referring to is the “Vermilion Bird” or Zhūquè (朱雀). The Vermillion Bird is a mythological bird that is portrayed as bright red and perpetually on fire, basically the closest equivalent to a phoenix in Chinese culture. The Vermilion Bird also represents fire and the season of summer, the two most defining attributes of Sozin’s Comet.
So, essentially, Ozai is declaring himself the king of fire and summer and Sozin’s Comet and all things Fire Nation-y. We all could’ve figured that out without the cultural context, but it goes much so much deeper.
The name of Ozai’s father is Azulon, which I mentioned in an earlier post means “Azure Dragon”. The Azure Dragon is associated with spring. When Ozai declares himself “Phoenix”, he is basically calling himself the “natural” successor to the Azure Dragon. Summer comes after spring, after all.
Think about that. Ozai has been Fire Lord for 5 years already and he’s still obsessed with proving that he deserves the throne. That he was “destined” to have it. He knows he isn’t a dragon like Azulon or Iroh, so he decides he’ll be be even better than that: A phoenix! The ruler of summer! He’s the embodiment of fire---Yup, Mr. Fire Lord, the most Fire Lord man to ever Fire Lord, coming through. It’s all so very dramatic and pathetic and reeking of insecurity.
And if Azulon is spring, and Ozai is summer, then Zuko is autumn. Which makes sense, since Zuko’s reign is defined by the dismantling of the Fire Nation empire; the branches of their imperialism withering away. In Chinese culture, the season of autumn is represented by the element of Metal. The-Hot-Zone, @the-hot-zone, put it best:
For Zuko to also be associated with metal is… pretty fitting. Metalbending is an entirely new style of earthbending, and it completely changes how people view earth. This can symbolize the shift Zuko will bring to the Fire Nation: re-associating fire with life, with passion, with light. It’s about the new understanding of an element.
Also, the animal associated with fall is the White Tiger, which is pretty rad. Zuko’s fierceness is very tiger-like.

“You can have your secret as long as I have your heart”
 ― Oscar Wilde
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Elia Strigoii
Race: Pureblood vampire
Age: 500+
Apparent age: 20-30 years old
Date of birth: November 1st
Height: 181 cm
Appearance:
Elia has the typical characteristics of the Strigoii family: pale blue eyes that seem to shine in the shadows, fiery red hair and an extremely pale, corpse-like complexion.
The sweetness of his face contrasts with the deep dark circles that color his lower eyelids, but he has no other particular signs, other than the sharp nails and pointed ears typical of his species.
He presents himself as a young man whose age is not well defined, but in any case he could hardly be confused with a boy. He appears as a tall man, distinguished despite his mortuary face, constantly dressed in dark clothes reminiscent of the nobility of the past, his vermilion hair stretches up to below his shoulder blades, even if he happens several times to collect them in different manners.
Elia has a physical characteristic that no one could notice from the outside. In Elia’s body there are two hearts: the largest (the one really of him), is in the center of his chest as usual. Unlike what humans believe, vampire hearts aren’t necessarily dead and inactive, particularly those of some pureblood vampires. Although his heart does not present the classic activity that it carries out in the human body, it remains an active and living muscle that reacts to certain stimuli of its owner, despite not taking care of the circulation of the blood that does not flow in the vampire’s veins, as happens with humans, which is why Elia is extremely cold when touched.
The second heart is extremely small and is at the height of his navel. This heart, on the other hand, has no activity, it is dead and simply stuck in his bowels; despite this it is said that to kill Elia it is necessary to destroy both of his hearts.
History:
Before getting to know Elia better, perhaps it is better to tell the story of him from the beginning.
Strigoii is a name that occurs in Romanian mythology. They are said to be bloodsucking creatures that belong to the world of darkness, creatures from which the figure of the literary vampire as we know him was born. They are said to have two hearts or two souls.
This is not true, or at least not for everyone. The Strigoii are not a species in their own right, in reality it is simply one of the oldest pureblood vampire families in Romania, it is so ancient that only very few of today’s members remember its origins, despite being composed of immortals.
Despite being a rather large family, it remains closed and reserved, despite the social prestige it holds in the nocturnal environment.
Unlike many other vampires, including purebloods, Strigoii have never (at least officially) integrated with humans, except through hunting or extreme necessity. They never go out into the sunlight despite having all the knowledge to evade the problems that would arise in coming into contact with the sun’s rays, and also never ingest anything other than blood, despite having the possibility (even if food does not however, it is a source of nourishment).
Despite this vaunted purity of the blood of the family that has persisted for centuries and centuries not to want to mix with the human race, in truth it is not entirely true that in the past there have been no contacts with that world.
In reality, there is only one example with two hearts.
Elia despite his venerable age is one of the youngest vampires of the family, son of two important members, Dragomir and Beatris and second of three siblings.
Even if the family insists on hiding it, although rare around the world there are damphir born from Stiroii and human beings who for more or less ethical and more or less selfish reasons broke the usual family order.
Beatris, Elia’s mother, was still considered relatively young when she conceived him, and unlike many of her family, she did not hold back her curiosity for the human world.
She was neither the first nor the last vampire to have intercourse with a human, but what happened is that, despite her already carrying a child, she conceived again.
So two hearts developed, one purebred, and the other, a more unique than rare case, completely human.
If due to the nature of the brother, or if for reasons of the simple cycle of life, the human being did not have the opportunity to develop, but his heart was absorbed by the growing older brother.
When Elia Strigoii was born, his case aroused the curiosity of the family, even if they considered it natural that the vampire had devoured the human, and also of the other purebred families that despite being kept in the dark of the truth of the facts, began to make assumptions not so distant from reality.
It is said that Elia is not only inhabited by the heart, but also by the soul of his younger human sister, whom he later named Helen, who has been communicating with him through his dreams since he was a child.
Personality:
Elia lives with a sense of guilt towards his sister. Although he never says a word to anyone, it is a feeling that torments him since his earliest years of life.
He loves neither humans nor vampires. He continues to meet the expectations of the family out of respect, but he does not appreciate the falsehood and hypocrisy that winds its way, while he sees humans as being too full of themselves for their position.
His attitude varies from being cold, serious and detached to irony and malice. He knows how to judge well with whom he can afford to let the hedonistic side of him shine through, for example with his siblings Emil and Eva.
Hardly Elia ever comes into contact with human beings, if not out of necessity, but in those rare cases it is even more rare that he has relations with them. His sisterHelen is the only exception. He loves her dearly, but at the same time he despises her human nature, imagining that if she was a vampire like him, then they could really be together. As a child he used to talk about the dreams in which his little sister appeared with his parents, but as he grew up those stories gradually faded away. Now the only one who can hear about Helen is her younger sister Eva who, being younger than Elia, has a sort of incorruptible admiration for her brother, which guarantees her confidence in him.
Since the family is isolated from the human society, Elia retains attitudes typical of past ages that still exist in vampire society. He likes classical music, theater and poetry. In addition, he loves animals very much, so much so that unlike other vampires he rarely feeds on their blood, favoring the highest quality human blood.
Despite bragging about the superiority of vampires over humanity, in reality Elia is curious about their world and in his heart he would like to know more, but he knows that by nature nothing good can come of it from the encounter between him and humans, and what happened to the unborn sister is proof of this.
Powers and abilities:
-Like every vampire, he has superhuman strength, superior even to many of his kind. He possesses increased speed and is generally gifted with rapid healing.
- It can transform into an animal, generally its preferred form is that of a fox, but it also often transforms into the classic bat.
-It can turn into fog, although this seems to have repercussions on his health.
-Wanting he can transform a human into a vampire through the classic embrace, he did it only once in his life and he never wanted to reveal either the reasons or who the vampire was.
-He can go out into the sunlight with proper precautions, but he almost never does.
-His saliva is healing.
-He can immobilize someone with his gaze according to his will, but this only lasts for a maximum of one minute.
-If he is not killed, he is immortal

Catloversshipping Drabbles (Giovanni x Nanu)
A translation of the first part of the drabbles I made for @istadris‘ last birthday ! ♥
1. Silence
It had been months, almost a year already, without any news, without anything. A radio silence that didn't look too good . Although he had learned of Team Rocket's apparent walloping and disintegration after the shut down of their base of Celadon City, and the missed stunt on Silph Co. Head Office, Nanu was mad at this beast of  Giovanni to not giving any sign of life. He couldn't imagine a man so proud and full of panache like him choosing any other path than reconquering his lost power. So Nanu waited, scrutinizing the slightest hint of a rebirth of Team Rocket.
2. Anger
"Who gave you that black eye?" Nanu shrugged. He raised his eyes at the one who dominated him of his imposing stature and met only a hard, icy, steel gray look. Giovanni seemed quite furious: against Nanu who get beaten up like a rookie by some random oaf, and against that guy he hoped had made his prayers, as he was going to cast his feet into the cement before throwing him into the Olivine's bay. Because no one has the right to touch Team Rocket Boss favourite toy.
3. Attraction
You could easily get caught up by Giovanni's magnetism: he was tall, good-looking, with a velvety voice and a charisma almost as big as his ego. He found it normal to grow attached to him, to want to follow his footsteps, to be desired. But what could the latter find in this old skinny and grumpy tomcat that was Nanu? Deep down, Giovanni would respond : glowing eyes, a sharp and vicious spirit and a kind of thrill, a feeling of absolute insecurity when he was nearby.
4. Jealousy
He felt a furious heat rising in his ears and his jaws clenched in rage as he watched through his binoculars what was happening in a luxurious suite of a hotel in Saffron City. Nanu had been assigned to monitor the local mafia leader, who had become his favorite target for some time. But he had bitterly regretted having accepted this mission order if it was to witness ardent shags between the latter and this handsome soldier, the new leader of the Vermilion Gym.
5. Separation
The ocean was gray and restless, the driving rain soaked the pier's concrete. This cold and sad, washed out atmosphere filled Nanu with a bittersweet feeling, a sense of tenderness like he had rarely experienced, and an emotion quickly showered by the icy, painful abyss of separation. The more he stared at the bay of Maile, the more he felt like returning to Driftveil City, when both of them laid themselves bare and had finally accepted their feelings after decades, but making their needed distance infinitely more cruel. .
6. Temperature
Nanu didn't like the cold, harsh climates were bad for his joints and he didn't like having to wear multiple layers of clothes to feel warm. His native archipelago offered him quite perpetual warmth, and the old cop was grateful for the Alolan climate. The nights he considered "cool" in Ula'Ula were hot and heavy for Giovanni, who was native of a less tropical area and had difficulty withstanding the damp heat, even without  any clothing. He would never have imagined that he could feel gratitude for a partner who would stick his frozen feet against his legs.
7. Secret
He was naked. And the other was completely clothed in front of him. He felt vulnerable, helpless, with no armor to display except his frail build. And yet, from the way Giovanni looked at him, it was like if he was undressing him again, as if he was removing his skin, flesh and laying his soul bare, and Nanu hated it. And Giovanni was delighted by Nanu's dirty look. A naked man has no secrets to hide, and under Giovanni's leather gloved fingers, the old cop would soon reveal all his secrets.
8. Inheritance
All his life, Giovanni was educated to take over from his mother. Even if he had proved to be a more than talented trainer, his path had been set for him. He learned political science and economics, languages and management methods, all the tricks of the underground business, the knowledge of his men and how to get out of delicate situations with clean hands. He took a certain liking to this. To the point of ousting his mother, when the time came.
Giovanni followed with a glance the frail silhouette, spattered with blood, silently coming out of Madame's apartments.
9. Future
People quickly forget. This world is going forward as fast as a Ninjask, and in a few years, all will have forgotten the events of bygone days, wars, gangs, all that. Team Rocket will only be a vague memory and him, its leader, will only be an anonymous person that the world will have forgotten. Only then, he could find rest, finally would get back to his son and try to make up with him. He could take with him the grumpy old man who had made his soul quiver, and they would leave to live in Unova, or Kalos, or anywhere, to give some time off to their old bodies.
10. Emptiness
His worst nightmare was coming true. He was alone. He had lost his prestige, his fortune and even his family. He was on the run after the shut down of his organization, without possibilities of contacting anyone, a price has been put on his head. He felt empty, lost. He had nothing left and the world no longer seemed to need him. Even his own son had distrusted him. Giovanni contemplated for a long time the waterfall which crashed below in a deafening roar. But in the corner of his mind, he heard a sly snicker : he was wrong, someone was still waiting for him.

Bloody Mary - Le Nouveau Continent
