Duchess of Sussex Tour Fashion Review: Final day!
On the final day of the tour, Meghan wore what I thought was a white version of the Veronica Beard dress she has in blue, but it’s not! It’s a dress by South African designer Hannah Lavery, and it’s ethically made by using leftover fabric to minimize waste! I love that and I’m thrilled to see her end the the tour by wearing a local South African designer. One with a message! Again, the outfit was made complete with statement earrings, these red ones are from Madewell and I think we saw a glimpse of them last week at the women in service breakfast. A nice pop of color to this outfit. What really would have made me LOVE the look, is if she had instead worn her red Stuart Weitzman pumps! Also, this township visit included a visit to Blossom Care Solutions, where women are trained to produce sanitary products and generate an income. So important and I am glad to see them include this.
For the final look of the tour, Meghan went for another repeat! It was her blush trench coat dress by Nonie. This was not my favorite look from last year, and it’s still not, but this dress looks so good on Meghan now! She is obviously very comfortable wearing it and that is important. What I thought was a lovely gesture, I think intentionally, was that she wore this exact dress last year to the Nelson Mandela exhibit and this year she wore it to meet his widow Graça Machel.
Overall assessment of the fashion during this tour: I’m very pleased that Meghan made the conscious decision to keep her wardrobe low-key. The pieces were fitting for the occasion and affordable. I am glad she wore a South African designer on the last day, but feel she could have included more local designers. During this tour, she did succeed at making the engagements and the people the main focus, instead of her fashion. While not the most exciting, this was a big win for her! I’m very curious to see if she will continue wearing more repeats and affordable items post-tour.

Laura’s Fashion Recap: Meghan in South Africa #7-1
TIE 6) Everlane Jumpsuit
Style: 4/5 On its own, this look is a 5/5. Heck it’s a 10/5. The jumpsuit with the earrings on Meghan just screams “SLAY QUEEN”. Unfortunately I had to read Tom and Lorenzo’s fantastic piece about this look where they pointed out that while fabulous, the earrings especially don’t really seem like a fit for the content of the event. So that’s why I docked a point.
Diplomacy: 4/5 Credit for repeats and for wearing a brand that focuses on ethical manufacturing.
Overall: 8/10 I think the score may be betraying my overall feelings. Like if she wore this look (perhaps with a fierce blazer) to a cocktail event, I would be screaming from excitement. Definitely a well put together look.
TIE 6) House of Nonie Dress
Style: 3/5 I like this look on Meghan, but I’m not sure I like it for this event. When you see the people around her, it just looks a bit casual in comparison. When you read the diplomacy section the choice will make sense but still I have to be true to the system here.
Diplomacy: 5/5 Meghan first wore this dress to a Nelson Mandela memorial event. What an absolutely remarkable piece of storytelling through fashion. It’s a subtle little detail that packs huge impact.
Overall: 8/10 Yet another successful look and a pretty great way to end the tour.
5) Veronica Beard Dress
Style: 4/5 A dress I’m happy got reworn. Great color and casual chic at its finest. Love the hair and earrings paired with it. The wedges are what caused me to take a point off. Just don’t quite work with the look. But still overall she looked great.
Diplomacy: 4.5/5 A repeat (and the first of many) is a great thing. I think for South Africa and the kind of visits they were making repeats were a great choice. On top of that, highlighting a South African designer through her earrings choice was great.
Overall: 8.5/10 A mix of a fabulous repeat and a piece of beautiful and diplomatic earrings makes for a very successful look.
TIE 3) Mayamiko Dress
Style: 4.5/5 For the setting and Meghan’s style it seems like a pretty spot on choice. She looks relaxed and comfortably chic at the engagement. There are tiny little things I’d change but those are quibbles.
Diplomacy: 4.5/5 Reasonably priced and fits in well for the event. Ethically made which is a great statement. And the Justice Desk Bracelet was a great use of the Meghan Effect to support a good cause (and a QCT initiative). Half point off because it’s a Malawi brand in South Africa which can lead to the misconception that all Africa is the same.
Overall: 9/10 GREAT start to what would end up being a great tour sartorially. Definitely a highlight of the tour.
TIE 3) Hannah Lavery Dress
Style: 4/5 I think this is a pretty great look for Meghan. Definitely not hitting a ton of high fashion notes, but I don’t think it needs to given the setting. I love that it’s white. After a string of darker looks, the lightness of this look is a great contrast.
Diplomacy: 5/5 I wish I could give this more than 5 but rules are rules. A South African brand that focuses on sustainability is enough to make this a diplomatic success. But wearing a bracelet given to her as a gift from a child the day prior???? Absolute knock out!
Overall: 9/10 One of the good number of smashing successes of the tour.
2) Aritzia Dress
Style: 5/5 The dress is very standard Meghan. Not that it’s bad, but it’s not a wow. What bumps this to a 5 are the flats and earrings which add flair and just the perfect energy to the dress. It is such a great look and feels perfect for Meghan in this setting.
Diplomacy: 4.5/5 Only ding is for the new Aritzia dress. But kudos for featuring a brand that focuses on ethical manufacturing and a great South African jewelry designer.
Overall: 9.5/10 One of the great moments from the tour style wise. Just sensational.
1) Martin Grant Dress
Style: 5/5 Style wise, this was one of my favorite looks on the tour. This dress was not my fave the first time around because it didn’t work with the setting, but oh boy does it scream Meghan at an outdoor evening reception. AND THAT HAIR…..OMG SO PERFECT! And of course the earrings are a great compliment to the look.
Diplomacy: 5/5 The look is entirely repeats and features a South African brand. Pretty perfect from the diplomacy standpoint.
Overall: 10/10 And there we have it my highest rated look of the tour. A perfect blend of a fab look for Meghan that hits all the diplomatic notes it needs to. An absolute home run look from what was a home run tour (style and otherwise).
