" hmmm ... ” it wasn’t all that unusual these days to see shōyō deep in thought -- though usually not inside of a plant nursery, peering over at all of the different varieties of plants, flowers, and seeds the shop had to offer. he’d tried his hand a bit at taking care of plants back when he’d been living in brazil, but that had been nearly two years ago, and having his own home garden was a lot different than some snake plants or monsteras .... it was interesting to see all the different varieties of flowers and plants this shop had compared to the ones back home in osaka though! he’d definitely have to bring one or two back with him, too. maybe that’s all he’d bring, actually, if he never makes his mind up about what seed to start with. he raises a hand to ruffle at his hair in frustration and confusion.  “ gah! i just don’t know... ”

" bokuto-san! great game today! ” Shōyō looks up from where he’s stuffing his uniform - unused, undirtied, worn only for the sake of appearance so far but not actual play or involvement - back into his duffel bag along with his team jacket. unlike the rest of the team who are sweaty and tired but exhilarated coming off of the high of a hard fought game won, shōyō feels full of pent up energy and restlessness - excitement and impatience, acceptance and understanding all warring within him at the fact that he remained benched this game, and will remain that way until his official debut onto the jackals.  “ man ... watching you and everyone else play on the court --- i’m super jealous i can’t be there too, but it’s super incredible seeing the game that close! ”

" Yacchan! ”   Shōyō gives a great big grin and a wave, going up on his tip-toes in a miniature hop (even though he doesn’t really need to jump to be seen anymore --- not in the general public, anyway! he’s short in the world of sports and volleyball, sure, but outside of it? he’s decently sized! ) With a pep in his step, he bounds over to her, his eyes soft and warm -- just like his smile. It’s the first time he’ll be seeing her since he’s gotten back from Rio, and he couldn’t be happier.  “ Wow! You really grew your hair out, huh! You look great! ”

shōyō breathes in and out, attempting to ignore the throbbing in his fingers as he sits on the medical bed, leg nervously jiggling. the last thing he wants to hear is that he’s broken them - it would take him out of several upcoming games while he heals up, and just the thought of it has  shōyō frowning down at his fingers, like his intense, dissatisfied stare could heal them up alone. a sprain, he could take -- dislocated even! but broken ... he gnaws on his lip, and looks up with an anxious yet carefully composed look on his face as there’s a knock on the hospital room door and it opens.

“ washi ... tape? ”  rubbing at the back of his head,  shōyō looks down at the list that yachi had provided him --- she’d heard he was traveling, and wanted some stationary from a store in the country he’d be visiting. the only problem was ...  shōyō had no idea what any of the stuff she wanted looked like! oh man ... he thinks, feeling a bit nervous and out of his area of expertise. he held the last of one particularly cute looking roll of tape in his hands, but wasn’t sure if it was the kind yachi was looking for or not...

" yo! kageyama! ”  Shōyō bounds up to him, volleyball shoes squeaking against the newly polished floor, and then stands in front of kageyama confident and cocksure as he plants his hands on his hips and he peers up at his old friend and rival.  “ you never took me up on the arm wrestling match! what’s wrong? ya scared now that you see how awesome and strong i am now! ‘fraid I’ll beat and totally embarrass ya? ”  he says it all with the air of pure confidence, a snarky, smarmy look on his face -- high off his team’s recent streak of wins and the media coverage he’s been getting since his debut.

shōyō wiggles in his seat a lot, impatience seeping through in the way he can’t seem to sit still. it’ll be the first time he’s spoken to pedro since he’s joined the black jackals, after all!!! he has SO MUCH to tell --- and so much he wants to catch up on on pedro’s side of things, too!! finally, the skype call goes through, and shōyō perks up in his chair when the connection is established, pedro’s face appearing on his screen.  “ OOOOIIII!!! ”  he waves his arms around in the air in an excitable greeting. there’s a beaming smile on shōyō’s face at the sight of his friend.  “ bom dia, pedro! como você está? ”

 “ mhhhh --- y’ kn’owf ---- ”   shōyō pauses as he finishes his bite of chicken curry, swallowing it and immediately going for another bite.  “ i still have that wisdom of the ace shirt from nationals my first year! ”  he exclaims, and pops in another spoonful of his food. he looks like a chipmunk with how he smiles, cheeks full of food, and holds a thumb up as he chews it.  “ iffs k’nna worn ‘nd shtuff buf sfh’per comfy! ”

he raises their entwined hands up at the sky, his index finger pointing towards a smattering of stars.  “ see! there! ”  shōyō exclaims, drawing an invisible line through the air, tracing the outline of a constellation so familiar to him. “ that’s volans! the flying fish! ”  if you squinted, you’d be able to make out the vague shape of a fish – simple as it was. “ when natsu and i were super little, we’d look out at the stars all the time! this was my favorite. imagining a fish in the sky was really funny, but also really cool … could you imagine? ”   he asks, and turns his head from where it’s been laying on the grass to look over at kenma.

“ i missed being able to look up at the stars in rio … there was way too much light to see any. ”   it was just another slice of home that had been missing while he was there, another piece he’d saved in his memory until he got the chance to have it again. the stars weren’t the only things he’d missed in rio, though. shōyō’s smile grows a bit fonder, a little bit shyer but infinitely more happy as he lowers their arms, squeezing kenma’s hand in his softly.  “ i’m glad i’m finally able to see them again ... especially with you, kenma! ”

“ I DID IT!!! ”   is the first thing he exclaims, as soon as kenma opens his door. shōyō’s a great big ball of excitability and joy, all crammed into his relatively small body. he’s rocking back and forth from his toes to his heels, ready to burst with cheer --- and can you blame him, really? the day he’s worked so hard for --- for years! --- has finally come! he’s finally done it. what he’s set out to do. and there’s no one he’d rather tell first than kenma.   “ I MADE IT, KENMA!!! I MADE IT ON THE TEAM!!! ”

“ mmmmmm ….. mrrrhhhhhhh ….. hhhggghhhh … ”  what the hell kind of noises are those, shōyō?! are you ill?! is what his friends would have told him, effectively getting him to quiet and settle down, but they’re not here right now. so shōyō continues the battle of wills raging on inside of him right now, each side battling valiantly against the other in an effort to win : beach? no beach? waves … waves evil …. water strong …. ME STRONGER … 

“ s ….. s - su … sure ... ”   he mumbles out, forcing the words from his mouth with fists clenched as his self preservation instincts (what little of them he has) lose against the much larger part of him that’s stubborn and refuses to back down no matter what. but then – the brilliant idea hits him!  “ you wanted to see what the difference between beach and indoor volleyball was, right?! we can watch everyone play!!! there’s a lot you can learn from the sidelines, you know!! ”  he nods emphatically to his words, feeling triumphant over his stupendously brilliant idea.

just ... what was that smell??? shōyō allows his nose to lead him to the delectable, heavenly, delicious scent, his mouth already watering at the thought of being able to have a nice warm meal. practice today had been super tough ---- fun! and shōyō loved every single second of it, every single moment with all his new teammates and knowing that he was finally on a strong team and belonged among them ---- and he was more than ready for some dinner. he closes his eyes, imagining the kind of dish he’ll find at the end of the yummy smelling rainbow ... and accidentally bumps into someone. his eyes fly open, cheeks red with embarrassment as he reaches out to try and stabilize them.  “ whoa --- sorry! that was my fault! forgive me! ”
