It’s half-past nine, and the air is thick with murmurs of anticipation. Your shoes cling to the sticky, liquor-stained floors as you bump shoulders with someone close to you. A fervent spirit zings throughout the room; the crowd moves in unison toward the stage as the lights flicker. A charming familiarity washes over you while glancing at all the faces who have come to hear the same music as you — to experience this show alongside you. The ringing echo of chants and buzzing chatter bounce off the ceiling. The thrum of the bass sends electricity through your body. Everyone’s energy shifting as smoke from the stage forms clouds that envelop the room, creating an intimate world between the crowd and the band, even if just for a little while. That is the unique thrill live music holds. The elasticity of passion that fuels live music is infectious and all-encompassing, and the visceral sensation it brings causes you to keep coming back time and time again for another taste. To bottle up that feeling is how it feels to listen to the enduring power of Louis Tomlinson’s energetic sophomore album Faith in the Future.
Two years after the release of his debut record Walls, with a year of high-spirited touring under his belt, and after leaving the big machine of corporate record labels, Tomlinson’s sophomore effort, Faith in the Future, is a departure from the slick, pop-leaning production that took root on much of his first album. Instead, the listener is brought into Tomlinson’s musical mind, which takes influence from grittier, more experimental genres. As one dives into Faith in the Future, the album shuffles through indie-rock, pop-punk, laidback grunge, and even a glittery electronic feel alongside fuzzed-out pop familiarity. Unlike other artists that might fumble while juggling several genres in one project, Tomlinson doesn’t flinch as his edged-out vocals, evocative lyricism, and passion for these sonic spaces and how he wants to tackle them blends seamlessly throughout the record’s runtime. This isn’t an artist who has stumbled into these choices but has been waiting to hone his craft and show off his versatility in sounds that feel most authentic to him.
Allowing Tomlinson the control to paint himself as the artist he wants to be moving forward, Faith in the Future’s feverish momentum, optimistic undertaking, and nostalgic identity is a pleasant shock to the system. The album begins with an anthemic opener, “The Greatest.” Feeding off the energy of tour, the sonically ambitious track is hard to imagine not acting as a blazing introduction to his live shows. The stadium rock verve builds to its powerful chorus that is meant to be chanted back overtop its rousing drums. It only acts as a taste of the heat to come as the full throttle of tracks like “Written All Over Your Face,” “Face the Music,” and “Out of My System” enter territories of early 2000’s neon-rock and pop-punk — something that Tomlinson has played with in the past but never fully committed to.
The sass-punk edge of “Written All Over Your Face” is a standout on the record. Its rowdy rough energy rattles about with an air of confidence both in sound and vocal tone. Leaning on the sticky disco-rock feel, influences from the likes of the early works of Arctic Monkeys give this track its bite. Tomlinson knows what he’s doing here, and he executes it well. The heat only grows as one slips into “Face the Music” which is heavily influenced by early pop-punk/alt-rock scenes but tighter in production. The melodic tone alongside fast guitars allows the track to have a pop-rocks type sizzle akin to the likes of Yellowcard and Something Corporate. “Out of My System” follows suit with a haphazard, darker punk soundscape with harsh drums, snarling guitars, and a grittier vocal.
Taking a sharp turn, even the shimmery elements of the dance-inspired tracks don’t feel out of place between the darker rock that surrounds them. Instead, Tomlinson’s confidence rides these mellow tracks, offering a nice pop reprieve. The DMA’s drenched “All This Time” and “She is Beauty We Are World Class” are perfect for downing drinks and throwing shapes in a club or lying in your bed late at night with whispers of self-exploration in the dark.
Yet, it’s in the indie-rock-infused moments on Faith in the Future where Tomlinson truly shines. This genre is clearly his wheelhouse and is a perfect place for him to explore his artistry due to the softer lilt of indie-rock’s edges that flesh out his lyrical identity and strength as a vocalist. He allows himself the freedom to navigate between more electric indie-rock and its hazier counterpart throughout the album. “Silver Tongues” and “Chicago” are built from that electric space. The former, based around the feel-good energy of nights out with friends and those you love, is an indie-rock romp with twinkling keys and an infectious chorus. It has a coming-of-age spirit while evoking the same warm sensation songs like Man Overboard’s “Love Your Friends, Die Laughing” evoke, maybe not in sound but in overall mood. The latter, a wistful remembrance of a past relationship, allows Tomlinson to showcase his range as his emotional performance alongside swelling guitars leaves a lasting impression.
In fuzzier arenas are tracks like “Lucky Again,” “Saturdays,” and “Angels Fly” which all linger with softer elements. “Saturdays,” an ode to bitter nostalgia, is a sweeping ballad that has a soaring quality to it with melancholic undertones while both “Lucky Again” and “Angels Fly” hold hazier blips of reassurance and warmth designed to feel like the sun on your face on an evening drive. And, although closing track “That’s the Way Love Goes” doesn’t hold enough weight to be a perfect closer, its stripped-back feel as a heartfelt albeit saucy conversation with a friend about their relationship woes is endearing and winds the album down by tying it all together, nicely.
When it comes to the departure from Tomlinson’s debut Walls, Faith in the Future feels more deconstructed. It isn’t slick. It isn’t perfectly packaged. The colors are meant to bleed, the scissor lines purposefully jagged, and the lyrics raw. It doesn’t stand out for its polished appeal as Walls does. it stands out for being everything opposite- everything eclectic and anthemic yet self-reflective. It’s an album crafted around the unrefined dopamine of live music. Whether you’re shouting the lyrics from the top of your lungs with your closest friends in a packed out crowd or navigating nights full of the people, places, and memories that reflect who you’ve grown to be, the record is a nice world to get lost in for a little while. Chin up and arm outstretched, Faith in the Future is a reintroduction to who Louis Tomlinson is as a solo artist and has always been, both personally and artistically. So, take its hand and enjoy the ride because the future is only brighter from here.
would really mean a lot to RT my publications post about it to help out a little indie pub that could! 🤍✨

drop the linkkk!!! also the idea of bonding w ghost through music is too sweet. sharing earbuds and not saying a word but the lyrics get the message across gijwifjajdksik my heart
I thought I'd go through a couple of choices/hc's that maybe seem a little more out of place/random
Big For Your Boots - Stormzy
now hear me out, this man is a Mancunian at heart, and although grime is more london, you can take the roadman out of english cities, you can't take the roadman out of him. this sort of music is something i just think he'd love to work out to, he can't even call stormzy a guilty pleasure, he just loves him. don't fight me on this, this is a hill i am willing to die on.
Gottasadae - Bewhy
i'll be so real, this is just me projecting. but also, this song uses the old korean for "god says" in order to refer to himself as the god of rap, and i just think simon would love that energy. along with that, i feel like he loves songs that make him feel the base, feel the beat, and this is absolutely one of those songs.
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel / Take On Me - a-ha / Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
these are classics from the 80s/90s, so this is music he most likely grew up with and i feel like although he had such a turbulent childhood because of his father, but these are the records he'd steal from his brother's room so he could blast them whilst his father went on a drunken rampage. they brought him a sense of comfort and escape in some of the worst days of his life.
Cherry Pie - Warrent
this isn't a justification. this is just me saying that this is the song that would remind him of you. he would never be the type to serenade, but he would absolutely put this song on whilst you were both in the car, and just tap his fingers against the steering wheel, eyes flicking to you in his peripheral vision so often you have to remind him to "watch the fucking road, simon!"
I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Artic Monkeys
this goes for any of the classic 90s/00s classic british tunes i put in here, but the reason he loves this song so much changed when he was out with the rest of the team, watching with wide eyes as you, gaz, and soap all got tipsy enough to crowd the tacky disco lights inbuilt into the dingy bar's floor. and fuck yeah, you did look so fucking good on the dancefloor

Introduction | Thursday, Czwartek | 5/1/22
Tumblr media
Hi I'm Iga and I created this as my digital journal, because the essays to myself in Word documents weren't cutting it.
This is a space mainly for myself, to post snippets of my life, to write things down, mabye write some really bad poetry (I don't read much) and even add a fancy picture or two!
I will write in polish and english. Whichever words are most fitting to the day.
I would like to look back at this in a couple of years and think of where I have gotten, just like I did with the dusty Word documents from 2019.
So if anyone is reading this, mabye myself in the future, I wanna give you a little wave and a nod. See ya!

Wokół mnie | Czwartek | 5/1/22
My room today is a little bit warm. It was raining, sun tuning in and out constantly. I wanted to ride my bike, I took the tram anyways. At least I got to wear my fancy peach pants. They don't fit my frame well but they are lovely still. Like some oversized necklace.
I did some lab volunteering: Mini-Prep and some sequencing.
Chit-chatted with people working there. I also talked with a couple of people about my bachelor's thesis and was reminded to really start planning it! I have to go beyond just thinking about it. It's uneasy and scary and I want to procrastinate like always, but dear Iga, you gotta let go of that impostor syndrome! You can wing most things, but it will be so much better to put the actual work needed, eh?
I really wanna overcome that uneasiness! I wanna do it! I want to grow out of these bones!
I took an exam today. Don't care about it much, glad to have it over. It was a pain in the ass. I winged it. I feel like I will do good anyways hehe.
I grabbed some food with my roomie in the mall. I don't like the mall. It smells werid and feels like climate change. But the food was really good.
I went home and felt good today. Today is three weeks since I started taking anti-depressants for my seasonal monkey brain. I feel the september verve coming back, I really missed it :] The december slump is passing.
I did some grafiki. I wanna like this commision but my client has awful taste and it's harder to concieve something nice and creative. I am well beyond my deadline.
I rode my bike to the shop to get groceries and I didn't take my headphones. My brain was quite quiet, I liked that. I like the cobblestone roads, even though it makes my butt hurt and makes jars in the trunk rattle anxiously. I really liked that I could ride that road after it rained.
It's 1 am and I'm waiting for the laundry to be done. I wanna fall asleep after I get that sorted out.
Goodnight.

The Rock Slump of 2010s and 2020s
Just listened to the ‘Rock This’ playlist on spotify followed by the ‘Rock Out’ playlist, both of which boast the best in new rock and the rock of today etc. I felt physically ill, I could only listen to a couple seconds of the five songs I listened to before my ears compelled me to skip. The songs compiled of pop songs that had features from traditionally rock artists, loud guitar with extremely soft indie voices, songs that triple j would try to pass off as rock ( even though they are definitely pop/indie- sticky fingers sounding *gag sound*), some poor imitation of a past rock genre or just the most boring song you have ever heard. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON WITH ROCK?!/?! Maybe I’m narrow minded as to what my definition of rock is, but it's so poppy and indie? While there are bands that can be found on these playlists that have that classic rock feel mixed in with a newer sound, (Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Bully, FIDLAR, Momma and Meet Me @ The Altar just to name few - took me half an hour to sift through the aforementioned playlists to find songs that I would genuinely add to my playlist) the majority is already popular bands (Paramore, Smashing Pumpkins), non-rock songs, tiktok formulated crap and indie-rock. I'm not trying to shit on indie rock, but to me it just doesn't have that certain something that other rock genres have, i feel as though it should just be classified as indie. Am I just a stickler, an old 67 yr old white guy crying out “back in my day”? Maybe I’m not searching hard enough or maybe we are in a The Rock Slump.
The goddamed Rock Slump has been occurring since the early 2010s, there hasn't been a decade-defined rock genre since the 2000s. I mean since the ‘creation’ of rock in the 1950s, there has been a consistent rock takeover, with it moulding into a different sound with each decade. The 1950s housed the rhythm and blues (which would eventually be coined as  rock n roll) and legends like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (Pelvis). The 1960s saw the rise of the rock band and the rise in popularity of sub-genres (folk rock, psych rock). Notable mentions of the 1960s: The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, The Zombies, Cream and The Rolling Stones. Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, ACDC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Patti Smith, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Talking Heads, DEVO, Blondie, The Velvet Underground, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, The Stone Roses, My Bloody Valentine, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Hole, Alice in Chains, Pulp, Oasis, Blur, Suede, Supergrass, Foo Fighters, The Verve, Silverchair, The Cranberries, Weezer, The Offspring, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit (lol, i had to), Radiohead, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes and so many more. I mean I could keep going. These are all iconic bands that anyone who listens to music can recognise. And while there are some pretty cool post-punk acts coming out of Ireland and the UK (Fontains DC, Black Midi, The Murder Capital and Wet Leg (don't kill me, they make good music)), they're still in the early stages of their success and its still pretty bare bones when looking at whats topping the charts (of which hardly any songs are rock). I cringe thinking about the sudden pop-punk that is happening right now with MGK and Yungblud, however Good 4 U does manage to get my head banging- even though I would classify Olivia Rodrigo as a pop artist. I mean what has happened to Rock in recent years? Lots of music critics and writers chalk it up to the massive rise in hip hop's popularity in the 2010s, while I think that's part of the reason, I also think that hip hop and rock have coexisted for a long time, hip hop cannot be the soul reason for the decline in rock. Sometimes Rock and Hip Hop even have a baby (Childish Gambino).
Is Rock the new Jazz? Will it ever come back? The current state of rock as shown by the Spotify playlists that caused this whole rant is depressing. The post-punk burst is promising but the pop-punk revival is brain-grating. Please god if you're there, birth us a new rock genre, I will be forever grateful. Maybe I am just mad that I missed out on some of the best years in music or maybe i'm seeing it through rose coloured glasses because I wasn't around for the shit and have 24/7 access to the gold. Was that too visual? Maybe I'm coming down from a Daisy Jones and the Six high? Maybe i'm just that annoying that im a ‘wish they were born in the 70s’ type of person

GRAYSON COLLINS' PLAYLIST [ CAN BE ACCESSED HERE ] Due to his gruff in nature first appearances, many would assume Gray might have heavy metal blasting in his ears, but truth be told his tastes are mainly riddled with alternative and punk music. Grayson doesn't stray away from formative early 2000's music while getting sea shanties stuck in his head time and time again. He also enjoys songs that are a step below a love ballad, though those have been trickling into his repeat lists more often now then not. Also mostly known as Sad Boi Jams.
1. Waltz #2 (XO) - Elliot Smith 2. Visions of Gideon - Sufjan Stevens 3. MakeDamnSure - Taking Back Sunday 4. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service 5. Alive With The Glory of Love - Say Anything 6. Manresa Bread, 271 State St, Los Altos, CA 94022
Tumblr media
Loved Manresa Palo Alto, so I thought I’d check out their Los Altos location. The Los Altos location is smaller and does not have a kitchen – so they seem to have fewer items (e.g., no toast). Manresa Bread was “conceived in the kitchen of three-Michelin-star Manresa restaurant.” They care about quality ingredients and great technique, milling their flour daily and hand-shaping their naturally leavened breads. They use French butter.
The bakery has loaves of bread, croissants, cookies, quiche, scones, cake, monkey bread, muffins, and pre-made sandwiches, a full espresso bar, drip coffee, tea, and retail items like apparel, cookbooks (including the Manresa Cookbook), brownie mix, pancake mix, granola, and Verve Coffee. They serve Verve Coffee. There were a few gluten-free items.
Tart flambe danish ($7): a flat circular Danish topped with eggs, sour cream, onion, bacon, gruyere, etc. It’s like a buttery, flaky, layered croissant dough with a creamy, cheesy, bacon blanket. Drooling yet?
Cappuccino: No foam art, on the bitter side, not as good as one you’d get at Verve and not as good as the cappuccino I ordered at Manresa Palo Alto.
No cash payments. They add a 3% service charge to the total. No seating inside. There are a few benches outside. Should I dock them for not having the best cappuccinos…probably not. At least they chose a good coffee roaster.
P.S. They could close early if they sell out. Best to go early. They're known for their monkey bread.
4.5 out of 5 stars.
