Hello! Um, I hope it's okay to ask this, I've only been following for a few weeks, but! I made this keychain for a friend, and I spent a Very Long Time trying to make sure I got the script correct, including like five attempts at learning how to write in cuneiform properly, what part was 'Ea-Nasir' in the infamous complaint tablet, how to make it look aged etc etc.

My questions are: A) Does it, indeed, say Ea-Nasir, as I intended it to? How badly/well did I do? 😅

B) I couldn't really find a clear answer via Google on this, but was the complaint tablet to Ea-Nasir written in Sumerian? I saw something saying it was written in Akkadian? I feel very dumb but I figured you would know better than anyone else!!

(also, the material is all clay and paint and metal wires -- the copper bar is stone clay painted with copper paint that has started to rub away at the edges so you can see the stone underneath. This project was Very fun!!)

Hello, and what beautiful work! The complaint tablet to Ea-Naṣir and other documents from his workshop were written in Akkadian, as he lived in Ur a couple centuries after Sumerian was generally overtaken by the Akkadian language. But many of the signs overlap, including several in this name, so Sumerian readers may recognize the signs you've used here: e2 𒂍 "temple", a 𒀀 "water", na 𒈾 "stone", and ir 𒅕 "bring". The fourth sign, ṣi, includes a sound (ṣ, kind of like the "ts" in "outsail") that isn't present in Sumerian, and uses the 𒍢 sign, which in Sumerian represents ze2, one of the writings of the pronoun zae "you".

You've replicated the signs excellently, 𒂍𒀀𒈾𒍢𒅕, but the one difference is that the complaint tablet itself was written in both a slightly later form of cuneiform compared to the "standard" and in a much more casual style. Here's (a transcription of) how the name appears on the tablet:

As you can see, the handwriting is pretty sloppy, and the signs 𒂍 𒈾 and 𒍢 look particularly different. So, if anything, your rendition is better and clearer than the iconic one from 3,750 years ago!

I hope your friend appreciates your hard work, and thanks for bringing some Mesopotamian joy to us with your artwork.

Do inkfish need to take therapy or something when they have eggs? Octopuses straight up starve and eat themselves when they have eggs. Do inkfish have those same tendencies? For my inkfish, that overprotective self destructiveness is a condition that quite common with young and the eggs sometimes need to be taken away and the parents get physical and psychological therapy along with pills to quell this so they won't kill themselves.

For a lot of real cephalopods, successful mating and laying eggs automatically sends the body into senescence which kills the squid, but I feel like this is something that Inkfish in Splatoon have (mostly) evolved away from. Families supposedly exist and the complexity of their cultures and the fact that the offspring are kind of useless for years imply that there is a much higher deal of maternal care. There are even some real cephalopods that mate several times separately and lay eggs many times, so it is not absolute.

However remnants of such a thing probably do exist. Post-pregnancy depression is probably pretty common among inkfish partially for this reason, varying in severity. The parent may be extremely disoriented or particularly scatterbrained at the very least for months after egg laying with a decreased appetite, but for most people the effects are probably fairly low, and a lot of it comes from the burning overprotective urge to protect the kids - especially in many Octolings. HOWEVER, i would assume that in place of this, a lot of Inkfish suffer from empty nest syndrome when their kids are old enough to become independent, to a much higher degree than even humans do. Many inkfish parents will enter a depressive spiral following the house becoming quiet.

There are cases where, rarely, Inkfish may have a rare gene that still causes their body to enter senescence in the modern day, which does mean that you have sex 1 time and you're done. Its onset is kind of obvious, causing extreme disorientation and loss of sense of self, loss of appetite and ability to eat or drink, and fading of the bodily functions. This causes the individual to deteriorate pretty quickly and there's not really anything you can do about it except brain surgery. So cool.

Not sure how to word this adequately so I’ll just go for it. It feels like music is important to the reader as they are a musician. When I was younger my bio family made me play piano as it was classy instead of drums which they dubbed “too punk”. Of course now that I’m older and more free I turned back to drums and am a full metalhead. I like to imagine that once the batfam visits the reader they’ll be a little more free to do as they like, so I keep telling myself the reader won’t look the same at all, full on metalhead or punk. Like all those music posters when the reader was young was probably less thrash and more school appropriate. But now they’d just sitting there with corpse paint. Or something else that’s equally flashy. I like to think the family is just in utter shock, the difference between the more neat and classy child vs the reader now, with flashy hairstyles/ clothes and makeup. Maybe the reader is still writing songs but it’s all metal and their friends are not in a band with them. This is just a self indulgent headcanon because my closest friends introduced me to metal (once I immigrated to this country) and it felt weirdly liberating. Now whenever I visit my family in my home country they’re always in shock at how much I’ve changed. I like to think it’ll be the same with the Batfamily.

Whereas I can't say that the reader will turn full metal as I'd like to leave which style and such they're going for now up in the air, and leave that for you and others to decide, I can say that they will look different, as you've mentioned!

I won't press on it too hard in Part 3 but it is still noticeable, I'd say, and I will likely mention it but again- won't press to hard on it only because of what Part 3 really focuses on. Or! Maybe I will a little bit because of what part 3 is really talking about, or trying to further convey.

Oh! Right! I will also say that music does really play a huge part to the reader, and it is very important to them. Like others — fellow artists or not — it has gotten them through tough times, and while they did feel obligated to pick up certain instruments, others were purely for their own enjoyment. They find freedom in playing, but it also leads them to a new world - maybe even a better one that they're slowly pulled out of as the song comes to and end.

Again, I'm going to leave the style and specific genre up to interpretation, and honestly from now on might try to be more vague with the instruments the reader plays at certain instances, so that it can be easier for you and others to picture the reader playing whatever you think would fit the scenario.

Though as you've also said, I can say that the Batfam will be in shock, but I suppose that's already expected since, in the narrative, they no little about the reader as a whole, y'know? So just about anything will surprise them, but that's not necessarily a bad thing from the reader's side. Just a further wake up call, I suppose :]

Nevertheless, thank you very much for sharing your interpretation! I find it very touching and I appreciate it a lot. It's really cool, honestly!

the last thing i want to say for now is im very happy everyone is at least willing to listen to the issue despite what side they fall on. i think too it helps to recognize every part of this issue, because its not as simple as pro v anti or invader zim drama. after seeing the internet fall victim to black and white mentality it is a relief to see some critical consideration to look at the information we have and form an opinion

Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis) is another spring ephemeral native to the Great Lakes! This lovely specimen was photographed just south of Georgian Bay in Ontario.

These little guys look a LOT more like the traditional Bleeding Heart than their close (both species-wise and location-wise) relative Dutchman's Breeches. They don't get their name from any part of the flower however, and instead are named for their bulbs, which are yellow and divided. They roughly look like kernels of corn and, if you are familliar with squirrels and their taste for tulips, are an easy snack for small forest mammals.
