i wanna get better at art but dont know how to start ^^' whats a good way to get into studying anatomy and improving as an artist? tysm 💗 love your art soso much
Tumblr media
more art converts 😼 yay!!
i think these asks were sent by different people but they're pretty related + a lot of my advice is the same! so i'll answer these together under the cut (it's so long oh gosh)
ok first of all i'm very flattered that people are asking me for art advice but i'm really not the most equipped person to ask TTOTT I've never been deliberately studious with my art so I feel bad offering advice when I've mostly gotten by with just drawing fanart and ocs a lot... my rate of improvement has therefore been slow, but I've still had an enjoyable learning experience so perhaps from that angle my input may help! i'll mainly refer you to external resources that have helped me
For anatomy + drawing humans:
1) I know I'm not diligent enough to sit down and study muscles, so instead I make it more enjoyable by drawing my favorite characters in a pose that targets the muscles I want to practice! (i default to drawing ppl naked because of this lol) This isn't the most efficient, but it serves as good motivation to get practice in. (honestly a lot of my general art advice has the undercurrent of becoming so obsessed with characters to drive your motivation to draw even when artblocked/ struggling with doubts!)
2) I want to refer you to Sinix's Anatomy playlist! Although Sinix focuses more on digital painting, he gives simplified anatomy breakdowns that include how muscles change shape under different movements/poses, which is crucial for natural human posing. the static anatomy diagrams from Google don't really help for that
3) What's just as important as anatomy is gestures! (especially important if you're used to drawing non-human objects I think!) Making figures look like they have flow to them will sell the "naturalness"(?) to your anatomy. If you have in person life drawing sessions accessible near you I'd recommend trying those out, or if you prefer trying it digitally there's this website!
This helps you not only get a sense of human proportions, but also natural posing! I'd limit the time taken to draw the poses from like 10 seconds to 1 minute(?) for quick gestures, and maybe 1 minute to 5mins(for now!! typically they go much longer) to study human proportions. I'd say don't spend a lot of time on them, repetition is more important!
4) I've also picked up on useful anatomy tidbits from artists online! Looking at how practiced/ professional artists stylize a body helps me focus on what the essential details are to convey a particular form (looking up "human muscles" and being hit with anatomy diagrams full of all the smallest details can be overwhelming! what do you even focus on?! so these educated simplifications really help me) Like Emilio Dekure's work! Look how simplified these figures are, and yet contain all the essential information to convey the sense of accurate form (even though it's highly exaggerated!)
(shamefully admits I've never studied from actual anatomy books so I can't recommend anything in that sense TTOTT)
For general improvement:
1) I highly recommend Sinix's Design Theory playlist and Paintover Pals! (+ his channel in general) You don't have to put them immediately into practice, but I think these are good fundamental lessons to just listen to and have them in the back of your mind to revisit another day. Plus these videos are just fun and very approachable! Design theory fundamentals are essential to creating appeal and directing a viewer's attention, and critiquing others' work/ seeing his suggestions are a good way to practice noticing areas of improvement+ solutions yourself!
2) If you prefer a more formal teaching resource, the Drawabox YouTube course covers all the basic fundamentals of drawing in short lessons. But honestly if I were starting out, this would be a little intimidating for me (and even now it still is! I haven't done all of them) But even if you don't watch them, the titles should give you an idea of the basic concepts that are valuable to pick up. I think it would be nice to keep in mind and revisit once in a while as you learn!
(One lesson I do encourage you to watch is the line control one! A confident continuous line conveys motion and flow much better compared to discontinuous frayed lines which I think is good to practice early by drawing from the wrist and shoulder)
3) As a universal piece of advice: Please please please use references! Use a reference for literally everything, observing is how we learn! You'll find that a lot of things you thought you knew what they looked like are inaccurate by memory alone. Also, trace! This is solely for your practice, tracing then freehanding has helped me grasp proportions when I was struggling! (of course don't post these online if you traced from art)
I've found that being able to compile references into easy to access boards has been very helpful in encouraging me to use references more. For PC, I think they use PureRef (free/pay what you want), and for iPad I use VizRef. VizRef is a one time purchase (which was definitely worth the $3.99 USD price imo)
4) On that note, try building up the habit to observe from media + real life and make purposeful comments about what you see! Like hey, when I bend my knee, the muscles/fat in my thighs and calves bulge outwards, I should draw that next time. Purposeful observation carries over to your overall visual library, and it's a little thing that adds up over time
5) For motivation, get into media you really enjoy, or make your own characters! The way I started art more seriously was by drawing fanart + OCs from anime that I liked ^^ For OCs it really encourages you to draw more because you're the primary creator of their art! Also you gotta see a lot of good art to make good art! Watching visually appealing media (like animation with appealing stylization/simplification) can passively help you learn just by observation.
ok wow I could go on but this is already a lot of information TTOTT my main aim for this reply is basically: don't let anything discourage you from learning to draw!! drawing is so fun and brings me a lot of joy ^^ practicing often will of course help you improve, and the way to incentivize that is by having fun with it! i hope this could help!💞

if i may ask, how do you feel about people referencing your art and studying your style when trying to teach themselves how to draw?
hi sorry i never responded to this! i read it while i was busy and had some time to mull it over.
while im very flattered ppl would use my art as a study i think i would discourage it not bc of anything to do with copying any artists style or "stealing" in some way but because my art has a lot of mistakes!! studying my art is already distorting the subject matter by a factor of one and if this is a "how to draw" stage, there are far better ways to spend your time studying (still life, life drawing etc things that are directly from subject matters) than my own work
even as a second step away from subject matters i would use masters studies not my own work, and while this obviously depends on what you feel you goals of your work are (realism, draughtsmanship, cartooning etc) studying a broad range of styles and artists will give you way more knowledge than if you stick to JUST what artists who do the work you want to emulate or get close to do.
so that is to say, while im perfectly happy with ppl using or studying my art (very flattered actually!!) i don't think its actually a great tool in the learning how to draw stage, more when you've got grasps of fundamentals and can more easily pick out why i might make certain decisions rather then simply copying them or how i do a particular technique (like capturing likeness, or colours)
baiscally if anyone comes out with bad anatomy from studying my work its not my fault!!!!!!! this is my disclaimer!!!!
i was gonna include mannerism (the long baby jesus artists) in this answer because in my head for some reason i have them as an example of studying from previous paintings vs real life (as a counter movement to the renaissance) but i literally cant find a citation for this so idk where i got that idea.

hi I'm sorry if if this is weird or something but you're my favourite artist and I love ur art sm and I want to be as good as you are (or at least a little good) but I don't know where to start, and I was wondering if you had any tips? (Sorry for bothering you, I hope you don't mind)
hii <33
ty for all the compliments and dw bae, you’re not being weird at all lmao xx
i want to start by saying that i’m very very flattered, but art is sometimes tricky bc i’m rarely satisfied with the results, and sometimes the disappointment leads to art blocks or breakdowns, which are completely normal.
so, my first tip would be: even if you don’t like your art, keep drawing. you can take breaks of course, but remember that improvement comes with practice!!
second tip: copy. a lot. wether it’s a real life picture, a painting, somebody else’s art, try to analyse the piece, think about what you like about it, study or trace the general shapes, and try to replicate: it will help you develop your own art style. (i used to copy the drawings from the books i read as a child, i had a whole folder of them. in this phase, sharing on social media is often debated if you use other ppl’s art so i advise against that)
once you know what you want your art to look like, watch tutorials. i think trying different styles can further help you with stylistic choices, so even if you want a more cartoonish art style, watching a couple of tutorials about realism can help with the understanding of anatomy, which doesn’t hurt.
however, i think most ‘do this’ and ‘don’t do this’ tutorials you see on tik tok or ig are bullshit. ‘don’t use pure black for lineart!!!” comic book artists use black. ink is black. there are shading techniques all revolving around black lineart. it’s not a matter of ‘don’t do it’, it’s more of a ‘do this if you want this effect’.
experiment, try many many things. i went through millions of art styles, making (sometimes subtle) changes: i went through a more real-ish style to full on anime, and now i’m copying realistic paintings.
life is too short to settle for a single art style.

To Argenti, who would you say are your fav ppl or things? What if I try to rizz you up 😈 (I’m joking dw, I am curious what ur fav things are tho. Like person, food, drink and activities)
Rizz me up? *Argenti checks a piece of paper written for him. It’s a guide to slang* OH. I assure you I would be quite flattered, but I promise that my ‘Rizz game’ is Superior. *The Knight seems quite confident in this fact.*
(Pixel: oh boy. Now you’ve done it.)
*Argenti brings a hand to his chest, looking elegant and proud as he replies to the questions*
My favorite person? Perhaps not a ‘person’ but…the answer will Always be Idrila…*he rambles a bit about Idrila. You feel like you’re being preached to…
He does EVENTUALLY realize he’s rambling, and promptly clears his throat and moves on to the next question.*
My favorite food…well…personally I do not have a very expansive palate, given my lifestyle as a knight. Truthfully I do not come across many opportunities to try new things so…I suppose I will always have a special fondness for the classic delicacy that is bread. It pairs nicely with so many things, no? I…wouldn’t really know to much about that, but that’s what I hear.
Favorite drink…I’m afraid I’m in a similar situation with the food question but…I do have a fondness for tea. Specifically rose tea.
I enjoy a variety of activities…most notably the joys of travel appeal to me…being able to expand my world by meeting people, talking to them, sharing the significance of Beauty to them…it means very much to me.
I also enjoy photography, though I am still…amateurish at the art. Sometimes, if taken properly, even a still picture can reflect beauty magnificently.
And speaking of art, I occasionally enjoy bringing pen to paper, typically in the form of poetry.
Yes, a truly beautiful art. One I wish to master some day.
And I do enjoy physical activities. Exercise is always something enjoyable for me.
Recently I’ve found myself doing some light reading as well, too. I have a fondness for romance novels.
And of course I do enjoy my fair share of sewing…sometimes rips and tears on the fabric aspect of my armor happen and one needs to know how to take care of such things, especially when on your own as often as I am.
Finally I do enjoy making modifications to The One and Only, typically detailing work…though I also have a fair bit of knowledge on how to maintain the mechanical aspects of my ship as well.
That’s what comes to mind off the top of my head but…I am willing to try new things as well.
Recently I’ve been curious about ice skating. I have never had the opportunity to try it…I must change that soon.
-Argenti, Knight of Beauty

I was gonna send you an ask like "huehuehueee I am dredging up your old klance art onto my cringe voltron sideblog" but omg you made new klance art! New catnippackets' klance art! For my eyeses to see!!! In 2023! Posted not that long after I sent that ask before.
I feel very influential all of a sudden.
I was idly thinking fondly of them very shortly before you sent that ask and I was like oh wow that's a weird coincidence! guess more than one person is remembering them fondly rn! and then after I replied I got another ask hinting that I should draw them again and I was like lol alright if I got two whole ppl messaging me about this maybe I will for old time's sake, I'm curious to see how they look now that I'm better at drawing. and I vastly underestimated how stoked ppl were gonna be kgjhfdk I was very flattered. I didn't know there was a whole renaissance happening but!!! here we are!!!

Pls ignore if this bothers you but how do you know if self shipping is healthy or not? I have always used it to cope but I also get told by people that it's unhealthy to want to love characters since they're fictional. I've always admired you and how dedicated you are to the characters you love, you don't act like anything holds you back, and I wish I could do that. I envy you sometimes. I've printed your art, I hope you don't mind. It brings me comfort when I feel down on myself like this.
Hey babe, first off, it's all good. I'm never bothered by kind and well-intentioned asks such as this ❤
I'll answer your ask in reverse; I don't mind that you've printed my art, in fact I am very very very flattered!!!! Most of my artwork is really made just for myself (hence the self insert, haha) I'm assuming you're printing my old fanart or perhaps even my current Ken pieces - or even if you are printing my self insert for whatever reason that may be, I still think that's flattering. I have a love/hate relationship with my work, and I fell out of the habit of drawing for almost a year and I didn't pick it back up again until a little over a month ago, so I am glad you have an appreciation for the things that I create. This helps me feel motivated to create more! And I'm happy that I can be a part of your life in some small way.
As for your envy, I think that's unnecessary. You can be just as dedicated as me, possibly even more so, because I've actually had some really fucked up shit holding me back from self shipping for almost a year now (long story) and I am just now starting to dip my toes back into it, and I am still afraid, I am still unlearning the instilled reaction to fear the very characters that used to comfort me. It will take me a long time and it hurts so, so, so badly every single day. But even before I had That Fear holding me back, there was still nothing to envy about me. Something you aren't noticing within yourself is possibly the very thing you observe in me, someone you don't know. I gently ask, rhetorically, what is it about myself and my connection to characters that you value so highly? And what stops you from cultivating that within yourself? It must be already inside of you for you to value it. You are someone who is just as worthy of love as I am, after all!
To answer your actual question... no, I do not feel as if anyone having interest in fictional characters is unhealthy, to an extent. Are you preventing yourself from engaging with other things, such as going outside, cooking, cleaning, taking care of yourself physically and emotionally? Are you possessive of these characters to the point that it leads to destructive behavior, to yourself or others? Do you imagine these characters to genuinely treat you with kindness, or do you use them as a weapon to heighten your insecurities (telling yourself repeatedly that they wouldn't love you or find you attractive, writing them to be violent towards you or uncharacteristically aggressive as a way of punishing yourself or feeding negative thoughts about yourself, etc)? If the answer is no to all of these, then I don't see any issues.
I have always felt that self shipping, or really even just enjoying a character without the additional step to self ship, is always worthwhile to me because I find the exploration of my relationships with these characters to be invigorating, whether it's me genuinely writing myself to be IN a relationship with them or if it's me simply interacting with their source material and not even diving deeper into the world or placing myself inside of it. Sharing artwork also gives a sense of community even if I don't actively engage with fandom/the self ship community, having this blog and answering asks and connecting with friends over shared joy of characters is a healthy thing. I've made some meaningful friendships online and almost all of them are because I've bonded with others about favorite characters. Some ppl may find it unhealthy if they're actively choosing to be malicious. I can promise you most people see "this person has a crush on a fictional character" as kind of standard since the early 2000s lol. And online ppl especially aren't seeing all of you, so why should their opinion of you rly matter in the first place? Let's say, for example... my blog... if someone went through every single one of my posts (and there's 30,000+ posts, I believe) they'd still only see the smallest fraction of myself as a person and their judgement of me would be completely invalid - and tbh nobody among us would ever seem "healthy" if they're only viewing a single aspect of ourselves anyways. Nobody else except ppl within my physical social circle see my day to day life. This blog is literally just a blip of myself.
When people see behavior that is unlike their own, it's easy for them to assign negative labels to it. Behaving "outside of the norm" is already considered negative by default in this world we live in. It sucks! And there are certainly some ppl who don't self ship who probably take one look at my blog and make a quick judgement about it, possibly thinking I might not have a grip on reality or something. But most people don't make that immediate assumption unless if they're just looking to be hateful, and even if it this was everyone's reaction (it's not, I promise you people are way less judgmental about self shipping than you think), it shouldn't stop you from letting yourself have fun. I love drawing characters holding my hand! I love imagining them standing next to me when I'm doing something that I'm nervous about, like I hate working with fire/intense heat so I hate using the oven but I have to do it if I want to bake myself a cake, and nobody else is gonna do it for me, so I imagine someone who bakes/cooks often like Prince Gumball or Deckard Wizard standing next to me and smiling warmly and telling me he's rly proud of me for taking something out of the oven, even if I'm shaky while doing it. I love wearing bracelets and earrings and rings and necklaces and imagining that my F/Os gave these trinkets to me, or that I'd give these trinkets to them. I love baking and decorating little cakes and treating myself to little gifts for my anniversaries, and I have so many opportunities to celebrate loving myself because I have so, so, so many F/Os who love me. We breathe life into these characters when we create these stories with them, we manifest them in our own way and we all do it differently because none of us are exactly the same. It's like we all leave our own unique one-of-a-king fingerprint on a character...
...and isn't that beautiful? Isn't that a feeling you should celebrate? Why hold yourself back? People will always dislike what you do, people will always judge you regardless of what you do. You can paint a picture of a butterfly, post it, and most people will enjoy it, but there are some people who would want you dead for it, people who have nothing but violence in their hearts. People will hate you for no reason other than the fact that they can, regardless of what you're doing. It's an unfortunate part of life, but also a bit freeing to know that since it'll happen regardless, is there really anything stopping you from doing what brings you joy, besides your own fear of what people think of you? People who you'll never meet, people who do not hold any value to you whatsoever?
Anyway, the only way I see self shipping as unhealthy is if it is negatively impacting your life, then in that case something would definitely need to change. I'd listen to your own mind/feelings rather than taking my word for it, because ofc I don't know how you're self shipping -- you say that people are telling you it's unhealthy "because they're fictional", if that's the only reason, well... that's not unhealthy. That's the point of self shipping... they're fictional sdflkjsdf they are literally called Fictional Others. Anyone who assumes you aren't in your right mind because you want to imagine yourself or an OC holding hands with a canon character, well... it says a lot more about them as a person than it says about you, I can promise you that.
If your worries circle more around how you're perceived, ask yourself, how badly do you want to break free of that? Is constricting yourself worth it? My tone is gentle here, is it really genuinely worth it to hold yourself back? I think the most freeing thing I've ever done was go all out with my self shipping. I'm drawing it, writing it, I'm making animatics to love songs, I'm buying voice clips from voice actors asking for them to have the character say "I love you" and then I'm recording myself saying "I love you too" and shoving those audio clips into a video and storyboarding me and that character to that audio and playing it back and adding romantic music and sound effects and god it's so freeing. It's so freeing. Fitting yourself to a perceived "normalcy" is not worth it for me. Ask yourself if it's worth it, for you. Again, a gentle, genuine, soft-toned rhetorical question: is your mood improved when you're fitting yourself in a box rather than freely expressing yourself? Because ultimately, self shipping is for you. Just you.
You can also always start small, if this is something you really want to do. You don't have to make a blog full of self ship tags and art and writing and screenshots and gushing. You don't have to go big. You can take baby steps, if you want. Have a sketchbook dedicated to doodles of you and your F/O (and if you don't usually draw... do it anyway. Make stick figures. Drawing feels good.) Write little blurbs of you and your F/O doing something nice together, however big or small. Write 5 sentences in a notebook where you're holding hands and walking down a sidewalk and they stop to pick a flower for you just to see you smile. Do this for yourself.
I wish good things for you anon, I hope you don't mind i rambled a bit there but self shipping is something I'm very passionate about and it saddened me to read how you "feel down on yourself" as you phrased it. I'm glad my art can bring you some comfort, I hope it continues to do so. Thank you for reaching out to me ❤
