My recent haul included a Ribon "newspaper" furoku from May 1984, and I only intended to scan the Ikeno bits, but turns out this is AH-MAZING so I decided to scan all four pages to share. Basically, a ton of the Ribon artists active at the time answer three questions: "who's your ideal man?" "what does the room you draw manga in look like?" and "what's your pet?" Highlights:
Tumblr media
Ikeno draws basically Shun as her ideal man, except I don't think Shun is much of a reader???
Tumblr media
I like 80s music so I'm always excited to see manga artists of the time draw or talk about new wave musicians; this is Hagiiwa Mutsumi's fanart of David Sylvian from the band Japan, her ideal man.
Tumblr media
Ichijo Yukari saying she's not greedy and doesn't have high ideals for men's looks, they just have to be "about as handsome as Bowie", which lol.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure who this guitarist is supposed to be, all hair metal dudes look the same to me. Michael Schenker, I guess, since Gonoue was apparently a fan?
And some fanart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Future Boy Conan / Yokoyama Mitsuteru's Babel II / Chiba Tetsuya's Shidenkai no Taka (also a childhood favorite of Takemiya Keiko)
Tumblr media
Tabuchi Yumiko, one of my favorite Ribon artists, was already married at this point, so she says her "ideal man" is someone who doesn't stay in their pajamas to lazy around in the kotatsu all Sunday. Tabuchi married a Ribon editor and has written some autobiographical works about her marriage and her children, in which she depicts her husband as... a sea lion.
Tumblr media
Tabuchi also draws her work space, which is the kitchen. On a side note I just adore Tabuchi's art so much... she has this totally unique yet adorable style and her free hand backgrounds and items make me go ugh, so good.
Tumblr media
Ikeno also draws her work space, where we can see Ranze's penguin plushy <3
Tumblr media
This furoku also features photos of some of the artists' work spaces, and we get an awesome intimate look at Ichijo Yukari's work desk!
Tumblr media
More proof of how popular British new wave and rock was among Japanese manga artists in the 80s... there's one more David Sylvian there, and I think I spot Simon Le Bon?
Tumblr media
I'm fascinated by this goose in the middle of Ogura Fuyumi's room.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry what the fuck is going on here.
Tumblr media
And last but not least, please enjoy a photo of Ikeno's adorable "pet" piglets <3 <3 <3 Ikeno was born to a farm and grew up with a ton of pigs, which is one of the reasons she often draws cute piggies!

Illager hierarchy
I feel like Evokers hold the most power, they always get final say. Vindicators serve as their bodyguards and do stuff related to raids. Pillagers are the subjects/followers. Witches and other illagers are usually higher ups.
More detailed version below.
Evokers
• They are the highest rank. Usually only found in the woodland mansion. • They have 3 divisions, each with varying level of power.
• What division an evoker falls under may be dictated either by their family status or by their powers.
• The most powerful are those amongst the high council. They make decisions that affect everyone, in the mansion or not. Some Evokers in the high council are known to be unjust. Those who disobey the high council will face death. • The second most powerful are the Evokers that participate on raids. They work closely with the vindicators who plan the raids, often advising and instructing tactics and strategies. During the raid they must be obeyed. Illusioners, Geomancers, windcallers etc often fall into this division but are often deemed to be more powerful that a regular evoker in this division. • The lowest rank of evoker also resides in the mansion. They play no role in raids not the high council, but in other matters. They may be embassies or diplomats for the mansion. Sometimes they supervise projects commissioned by the high council.
Vindicators
They are second on the hierarchy
They have a vast range of roles in the mansion, what they do depends on their family status and physical strength.
The highest ranked role is helping plan raids, vindicators in this role tend to be well respected and live lavishly. They rule over the pillagers in accordance to the high council Evokers. They work closely with Evokers that take part in raid, but many of these vindicators choose not to take part in raids.
Also amongst the highest ranks are vindicators who were hand selected by Evokers to be their bodyguards. They are very loyal and close to their Evokers, often they will cover up the Evokers’ scandals because without them they wouldn’t have luxuries.
The second highest rank includes vindicators the take part in raids. They, also, are to be obeyed but what the evoker says will always overrule what they say. It is seen as a honourable role to have. They make sure what is obtained from the raid is distributed accordingly, most goes back to the mansion.
The lowest rank will often do jobs around the mansion. Whether that be cooking, looking after others or maintaining equipment. Sometimes they are raid captains.
Pillagers
The highest rank are the raid captains. They overlook and lead the raid. They take orders directly from those who plan the raids. Whilst not raiding, it is their responsibility to protect the outpost and the pillagers in it.
The lowest rank in the hierarchy are the regular pillagers. They live fairly normal lives but can be called upon to participate in raids and have some aspects of their lives dictated by those who are higher up. Poverty is common in this rank, unless they have a very successful raid.
———————————————————————
Witches
Witches aren’t counted as illagers, they choose how they want to live their lives freely. If they choose to involve themselves with illagers, their position on the hierarchy may depend on their abilities. Some may be kept by Evokers to be their doctors, witch would give them a higher rank. Some may be assigned to work in the mansion to make potions that may be used in raids.
Overall, they are usually in the middle of the hierarchy, but it isn’t unusual to seem them with Evokers in the high council or others Evokers.
Other types of Illager
This includes windcallers, geomancers, iceolgers, illusioners etc.
They choose how they want to spend their lives freely, but are open to working with illagers.
Due to their specialisations, they can be equal to Evokers. Their powers prove to be useful in many different ways in the mansion and on raids.
Thanks for reading until the end!

Today I want to rant at length about highlight a plot-relevant but otherwise rather dry line from Shido's Palace, simply because it's been living rent-free in my head for days and I'll die if I don't.
And up front I want to say: this is not intended as translator bashing, shit like this is rarely on the translator, though I will possibly get a little aerated at times. More about that at the end.
This is really long, and probably very boring. So to summarise quickly:
Ooe's "diplomat" and "president of some company" are the Minister for Transport and the railway company president from the 4/10 cinematic with Sae and the SIU director;
Shido wasn't "specially appointed", he's the Minister of State for Special Missions, likely with oversight for either the PTs or the psychotic breakdowns;
being a pro translator sucks;
something about a well.
my least favourite line so far
Shadow Politician 春先に地下鉄事故があっただろう?狙ったのは、あの運転士だからな。 harusaki ni chikatetsu jiko ga atta darou? neratta no wa, ano untenshu da kara na Do you recall the subway accident early last spring? The one I had targeted was that engineer.
nb—this "engineer" is the train driver. I didn't get this at all, but apparently train drivers are called engineers in the US? This is a good example of how something you think is a mistranslation may not be.
There is an occasion where the guy is referred to as a "driver", but this is actually 車掌 shashou—in Japanese, a conductor in the British sense, the member of staff who is not the driver, but walks up and down checking tickets. This is meant to hint to us, I suspect, that the NPC saying this may not be a reliable source—he's making some spooky claims, after all. Yet again, in America, the conductor can be the driver of the train...? IDK, confusion abounds.
But on to the important bit:
Shadow Politician 目障りな国交大臣と、現政権派の社長のクビを取るためだった。mezawarina kokkou daijin to, genseiken-ha no shachou no kubi o toru tame datta It was to take out the president of some company and a diplomat who sided with current government.
Full disclosure: I have never liked this line. It screamed of being mistranslated. "The president of some company"? Ooe had this guy destroyed, and he can't be specific? And "a diplomat"? This has come from nowhere—I can't think of another diplomat in P5. It just all seems so random. And it is random. Because this was meant to close up a background plot element from the start of the game, and it just... doesn't any more.
So, for this one, I'm just going to break out the big red DENIED stamp again:
Tumblr media
The hell of it all is that I can see what they did here, so I'm going to go through it at excessive length, as like... an object lesson in what not to do. Not just for you, but for me.
And I need to be clear up front that I'm not an authoritative source on the Japanese language. I'm not fluent, my Japanese is barely passable (which is why asks, comments and discussion on my language posts are all always super welcome, btw, just like for everything else I post). I'm just a weeb on the Internet, who constantly posts assertions and theories that future me will hate. Bring your salt shaker.
Tumblr media
Quick glimpse behind the curtain: this is from my Google doc for Shido's Palace. You have the textbox code, the speaker, then the text in Japanese, romaji and the localisation. Usually these days I don't add the romaji (it's not good for your reading), but lines that go into posts get it temporarily.
Words I don't know, or had to verify (like shachou, where I wanted to know if it was always a company president or if it could be a role within a political faction), or lore/grammar notes, all get comments, which are highlighted in yellow.
the peril of dictionaries
I'm bilingual English/Welsh-speaking; until I was fifteen, I was educated through the medium of Welsh. So I got taught very early on about the correct use of dictionaries. The exact example I remember is that a past pupil (probably apocryphal) wanted to put "Well, Dad was angry!" into Welsh. And they had looked up "well"....
ffynnon, roedd Dad yn grac! Well, Dad was angry!
This is a ffynnon:
Tumblr media
It's a funny story. The point is that you should always flip to the other half of the dictionary to verify the meaning you found. Or these days, with the Internet and all, we get to check multiple dictionaries, corpuses and sources! And a riotously good time it is.
part one: who was that mysterious diplomat
The main phrase I want to focus on is 国交大臣 kokkou daijin. This is what has been rendered "a diplomat" in the localisation. On first glance, that's a string of kanji I don't know: country, the right-hand side of the second half of 学校 gakkou (school), something about a big man... is that read daijin?...
Maybe it's a yojijukugo—a fixed four-kanji phrase with an often-idiomatic meaning? Let's put the whole thing into Jisho and see what we get.
(Incidentally, I bash Jisho constantly, but it's still my first stop because it's fast and often good enough. You just shouldn't rely on it for anything critical; trust, but verify.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
B|
Well, there's no yojijukugo. But one glance at that tells us that Ooe's "diplomat" is not a diplomat at all. Ooe's "diplomat" is the Minister for Transport who was brought down as a result of this subway crash in April. You might have thought Shido had this guy taken out, but no. He did it for Ooe. He crashed a subway train, injuring 80 people, as nothing but a favour to Ooe.
But why is it using kokkou, "diplomatic relations"? Well, Jisho gives us a convenient "see also" link. Let's take a look:
Tumblr media
You see what they did there? The full phrase is 国土交通相 kokudo koutsuu-shou, "Minister for (National) Land and Transport". But nobody wants to say that. So you strike out some of the kanji. The word becomes kokkoushou—but everyone still knows who you mean.
Let's do a bit of that verification I mentioned. Here's Wikipedia:
Tumblr media
HmmMM. Notice how the Minister and the Ministry are read the same; only the last kanji changes. But we're still on track.
Let's click over to Japanese Wikipedia. What do they have to say?
Tumblr media
And there it is again, highlighted: our old friend 国交 kokkou, "diplomatic relations". "In Japanese, this is commonly abbreviated as kokkoushou".
daijin
How about 大臣 daijin? It looks like it just means "big man" or "important man", but what does it actually mean? Again, let's start with Jisho:
Tumblr media
... B|
Jisho offers us a bunch of "further reference" links, so I'm going to go straight to Japanese Wikipedia for this one—which sends you to an old revision of the page, by the way; be sure to go to the latest one:
大臣(だいじん)は、本来は皇帝や国王などを輔弼して国政を司る重要官職だが、今日では一般的に君主制か共和制かにかかわらず、政府を構成し、各行政部門の長に位置する官職を指す。閣僚ともいう。 Historically, 大臣 daijin referred to the high position of those responsible for matters of state, who advised emperors and kings on those matters. However, today it generally refers, regardless of whether the government in question is a monarchy or republic, to an official who leads a division of government.
... ... B|
In other words, a cabinet minister. Seems to sum it up pretty well, but let's just look at the invaluable ALC corpus on this:
Tumblr media
So we have it. A daijin is unquestionably a cabinet minister. And Ooe is unquestionably talking about the Minister for Transport.
last-minute edit: I actually wrote this entire post, preened for completing it, then closed it in my drafts and forgot all about it. Until I opened my grammar text to a random page and found this:
Tumblr media
EVEN MY GRAMMAR BOOK KNOWS.
Actual grammar books are a bit obsolete in 2023, but that is a great one if you're in the market. Just don't get the Kindle edition, it's illegible on Kindle which is probably not what you want.
Incidentally, yes, a Diet member is sensei—you can often hear people refer to Shido that way.
but we can also backreference this one
Another cool thing we can do is get context-relevant examples. That is, we can search the P5 script itself to see how it uses daijin and kokkou daijin.
Two lines use kokkou daijin. One is this line of Ooe's. The other is a news story, which gets it right:
Newscaster 国交大臣の辞任に伴い、与党への批判が高まっており⋯ kokkou daijin no jinin ni tomanai, yotou e no hihan ga takamatte ori... Criticism of the ruling party has surged, following the resignation of the Minister of Transport.
But people talk about the Minister quite a bit. What phrases do they use? Well, sometimes he's simply the daijin—"the Minister"; this usually becomes "Minister of Transport" for context. Sometimes he's the kokkoushou, as we discussed above. And often, on the news, he gets his full title—he's the kokudo koutsuu daijin.
Usually, daijin by itself in P5 is part of 総理大臣 souri daijin—the prime minister.
meanwhile in shidoland
In passing, the MoT is not the only one who gets translated out of the script. You might remember from the calling card cinematic that Shido is the "Minister of State for Special Missions".
Makoto tries to tell us this at one point:
Makoto 特命担当大臣現職の閣僚よ tokumei tantou daijin genshoku no kanryou yo He was specially appointed to the position. That's his current title. He's the current Minister of State for Special Missions.
(What is that, exactly? I'm not gonna do a huge research effort on this one right now, this post is already longer than the Nile and dry as sand, but they appear to be appointed to deal with things that are a big deal—the link gives you examples of some of the issues they've been appointed for. It's not inconceivable that Shido was appointed to the Cabinet to deal with the national crisis of psychotic breakdowns and mental shutdowns that he started. Either that, or the PTs themselves—he does talk about them an awful lot.)
and that's not all
There is, of course, a real Japanese Minister for Transport. We can put kokkou daijin into Google (with a little は on the end to filter Chinese-language sites), and what do we get back? The first hit is the Wikipedia page for the Minister for Transport.
My guess would be that the translator knew the word kokkou, but they didn't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Japanese politics. So they read kokkou daijin as some kind of important diplomat.
part two: in which we invent time travel
And that was only the first of the two things that made me hate my life about that textbox. Let's bring the line back:
Shadow Politician 目障りな国交大臣と、現政権派の社長のクビを取るためだった。mezawarina kokkou daijin to, genseiken-ha no shachou no kubi o toru tame datta It was to take out the president of some company and a diplomat who sided with current government.
The second thing that got under my skin was this:
現政権派の社長 genseiken-ha no shachou
This means, in the terms of the localisation, "a company president who sided with current government". But... what is even going on here?
In Japanese, modifiers go before the things they modify, right? Like ... always. I'm going to cite the slightly-tongue-in-cheek but also inestimable Jay Rubin (probably best known as Haruki Murakami's English translator) on this:
... by about the middle of the seventh century, the Emperor, who still wielded actual power then, made a rule, maybe the one rule that really works in the language and never gets broken: “From this day forward, subjects will always come before their verbs. And, just to keep things neat, modifiers will always come before what they modify.” Never in all these centuries have there been any exceptions—at least not in normal syntax....
Shōmetsu shita zō is “The elephant that vanished”—a fragment, just a noun with a modifier in front of it. By putting it before the zō, we’ve changed the shōmetsu shita into a modifier. I’m going to go way out on a limb here and call anything that modifies a noun an adjective. Shōmetsu shita zō (literally, “vanished elephant”) works exactly the same way as utsukushii zō (“beautiful elephant”).
(That's from the book "Making Sense of Japanese", by the way, which y'all should totally read if you can find a copy. It's one of Kodansha's little books, which are all worth at least a glance; they published tons of them, with titles like "All About Particles" and "How To Sound Intelligent In Japanese" and etc etc etc.)
back to our sentence
So how is this translation breaking that rule? Let's look at it again, with the problematic parts bolded:
目障りな国交大臣と、現政権派の社長のクビを取るためだった。mezawarina kokkou daijin to, genseiken-ha no shachou no kubi o toru tame datta It was to take out the president of some company and a diplomat who sided with current government.
現政権派 genseiken-ha is the current government; the current administration. No problems there. It's just in the wrong place.
kokkou daijin, we established, is the localisation's "diplomat". genseiken-ha no translates as "aligned with the current government". But genseiken-ha is after kokkou daijin. It cannot be modifying it. It can't have been taken for a relative clause—what Jay Rubin framed as an adjective in the quote up there—because we still have the two people the sentence describes, the "diplomat" and the businessman; the sentence has not been read as talking about a diplomat who is also a government-boosting company president.
We should have, literally, "an eyesore of a minister for transport" and "a company president who sides with current government". But we just... don't.
Is it possible it doesn't make sense that a company president would be aligned with the government? Has the sentence been rearranged for that reason? But this is essentially what Okumura does: he's a company boss aligned with a powerful politician. So are the TV and IT Execs whose shadows we meet, for that matter. They are not in politics themselves, but they network with politicians. Big business and politics are always hand-in-hand.
All of this gives us the following working version of the translation:
It was to take down that intolerable Minister of Transport and a company president who supported the government.
And on that note....
who is that mysterious company president
"the president of some company", the localisation says. This seems a bit vagued up. Are there any company presidents we should be aware of here?
The answer is yes:
Tumblr media
On 4/10, in the cinematic after the crash, the SIU Director talks at length about how this is the fault of "the company and the government". Of course he does—he knows very well what's happened, and he knows where the blame is to be assigned:
SIU Director: It's less of an operating accident and more of a crime of the company and the government. SIU Director: Site inspectors apparently reported all of this six months ago—the deterioration of the tracks and the ATC.
And the last two lines in full, since they diverge:
SIU Director それを会社が隠ぺい…国交省も故意に見逃したフツがある。 sore o kaisha ga inpei... kokkoushou mo koi ni minogashita futsu ga aru Seems the railway company and the Ministry of Transport both turned a blind eye to the truth. So the railway company covered it up... and the Ministry of Transport did what they do best: they turned a blind eye to it..
This is just a slight difference in emphasis: the railway company allegedly performed a deliberate coverup, and it was the Ministry that did their normal thing, and chose to overlook that coverup....
But note that "railway company" here is just 会社 kaisha, "company". Originally, it was obvious from context; the localisation clarifies it. But when Ooe later mentions a 社交 shachou, a "company president", in the same obvious-from-context way, it has not been picked up on—our very personal railway company president has become "the president of some company". Who was important enough for Ooe to personally destroy, but not important enough for him to remember where he worked.
SIU Director 隠し通せんよ。大臣の進退まで行くだろう。 kakushitoosen yo. daijin no shintai made iku darou There's no way they can hide. This will go all the way to the top. They can't keep this hushed up forever. By the end of this, the transport minister's job will be on the line.
... but here's the first real appearance of the Minister for Transport, with the SIU Director—who, again let's not forget, knows this crash was engineered in part to get that minister—not just saying this incident will "go all the way to the top", but that it will specifically end with them coming for the minister's job.
where did we come from, where did we go
Where does that leave us with the sentence?
It was to take out the president of some company and a diplomat who sided with current government. It was to take down that intolerable Minister of Transport, and the president of the railway company. He supported the government, after all.
We've broken that little genseiken-ha out into its own little explaining sentence, since it's hard to phrase as one sentence in natural English. And now you know.
btw, leave the translators alone
Look, this is far from the best translation I've ever seen. We should be mad about this, right? Well... no.
As a hobbyist, I have the luxury of focusing on a single fandom, spending hours, days, or weeks thinking about single scenes, researching context, language and concepts, confirming I've understood things to the best of my ability. Your average animanga/JRPG translator is not being paid well enough, or given nearly enough time, to do this. They cannot be expected to do this.
This is not, not, NOT on the translator. Read that ten times. We are supposed to go from our second language to our native tongue; that's how translation works best. So there will always be areas of confusion like this, things that need clarification and research. Japanese media translation requires a vast knowledge of differently arcane terms depending on the work; nobody will know them all.
Who is this on? It's on Atlus, for skimping on and rushing not only the translation but the editing; they did the English localisation of a massive property on the cheap. Something like this should have been caught by the editor, but honestly P5's editing (including the way things are finalised in English, and the overall polishing of the script) tends to come in for more criticism than the translation per se.
tl;dr: blame the company, not the poor translator who was most likely just one of us trying to make a shitty living with something they love, and a skill they worked their ass off for.

Giving Cats characters pkmn types (and moves+stats¿) ! Kittens Edition >:3
ok starting with abbreviations
_Atk = (physical) attack
_Def = (physical) defense
_SpA = special attack
_SpD = special defense
_Hp and speed are self explanatory
_ defensive means both defense stats
_ physical / special stats means both physical or special stats
(After writing for sillabub: The urge to make them all half normal was too real sorry)(It gets worse as it goes)
Sillabub: normal/psychic
She is THE normal/psychic type. I think I had this idea mostly because of the many normal/something typed baby Pokémon. Dont think of her as a literal baby but she is tiny. She gets higher defensive stats and a slightly higher SpA than Atk. Cosmic Power and Baton Pass for moves.
Tumblebrutus: fighting/normal
He tumbles thats enough for the fighting type :33. I can’t make them ALL just normal yknow. He’s the type of kid to get into fights just cuz. High speed stat, low Def and special stats. He gets Acrobatics and Wake-up Slap for moves.
Victoria: normal/fairy
moon moon Moonlight and Playrough are moves id give her. Her solo is soooo fairy type coded. High physical stats. Good hp. Rest suck tho gotta balance stuff.
Electra: electric/normal
Self explanatory, cant miss the opportunity with the name. I like to think shes a bit magical too :] . Mid stats but high SpD and Atk. She gets Assurance, Nuzzle and Spark for moves.
Etcetera: ground/normal
Reaching with these typings once again. She might play in the dirt I guess. He would have Sand Attack and Screech for moves :3 . High Hp, but low defensive stats. High speed too.
Carbucketty (the one 98 called Pounce): normal/ground
He also plays in the dirt woahhh!?! Scratch and Mudshot. Inverse Etcetera stats :P . They can be trashy gimmick pokemon together <3
Plato (Admetus ig): normal
I cant, I cant give give him normal/rock and then say “he throws rocks” 😭 mmmm fighting maybe? Theres gonna be a lot of fighting types later tho :( . He can just be a normal meow meow. Moves can be Knock Off and Tail Whip. Mid stats all around except for high Def
Pouncival: normal/fairy (questionable)
Completely tripping here. But hear me out. Fairy types are silly and I like them. I havent focused enough on him in boots where he actually exist im sorry. He gets Counter and Bide for moves. High Atk and Hp.
Next up are song cats :3

Re-translating Symphony of the Night
After re-translating Curse of Darkness and finding many pearls, and trying to re-translate Harmony of Dissonance but discovering that the two scripts are pretty much identical, I tried with the far more famous Symphony of the Night :D
This time, I decided to pull not just the entire script, but also the re-translation that came with Dracula X Chronicles. Every cutscene has at least one difference worth pointing out.
The translation of the iconic intro is here, and I can’t make it more justice. Here’s the DXC version for completion’s sake.
Richter: Dracula. Die now, and leave this world! You'll never belong here! Dracula: Oh, but this world invited me. Your own kind called me forth with praise and tribute. Richter: Tribute? You're a thief. You steal men's souls, their freedom... Dracula: Freedom is always sacrificed to faith, good hunter. Or are you truly here by choice? Richter: All I'm here for is you. To hell with your heresy! You're nothing but a blight on mankind. Dracula: Ha! Mankind. A cesspit of hatred and lies. Fight for them, then, and die for their sins!
Encounter with Death
ENG (PSX):
Death: Ah, Alucard. What is your business here? Alucard: I've come to put an end to this. Death: Still befriending mortals... I'll not ask you to return to our side. But I demand you cease your attack. Alucard: I will not. Death: You shall regret those words... We will meet again.
ENG (DXC):
Death: Ah, Alucard. What is your business here? Alucard: I've come to put an end to this. Death: Ever the insolent boy... but there'll be no games here. If you will not behave, begone. Alucard: I will do neither. Step aside, old man. Death: Ha! Such arrogance. Very well... but I shall see you very soon.
JP:
Death: Master Alucard. For what reason did you come here? Alucard: You know the reason. I ask you to step aside. Death: Are you still on the side of humans? I will not ask you to come back to us, but at least I would like you to withdraw. Alucard: That is not up to discussion. Death: It cannot be helped... I will leave this place for now. Once again, please think about it carefully.
Death speaks in keigo towards Alucard, which is hard to convey in English. For some reason, his name is spelled in English in the dialogue box, instead of being called Shinigami like usual.
The last line is very different. I don’t think Death is actually as conflicted as he sounds (he still laughs evilly upon stealing Alucard’s gear), but at least he’s being more courteous about it.
(I like the little “shimatta!” Alucard says when he loses his equipment lol)
First encounter with Maria
ENG (PSX):
Maria: You seem human and yet... What do you here? Alucard: .......... I've come to destroy this castle. Maria: Then we have the same purpose. I'll trust you for now. I'm Maria. Who are you? Alucard: .......... Alucard. Maria: Not the talkative type I can see. Well, perhaps we'll meet again if you live that long. Farewell.
ENG (DXC):
Maria: Wait. Are you human? What are you doing here? Alucard: I've come to destroy this castle. Maria: Likewise. I'm Maria...And you are? Alucard: ...Alucard. Maria: Well, if you're a better swordsman than a speaker, perhaps I'll see you again. Farewell.
JP:
Maria: You have dark powers, don’t you? In appearance, you look human, but... For what purpose did you come to this castle? Alucard: ... I've come to destroy this castle. Maria: Same as me. I'll believe in those words. I'm Maria! And you are? Alucard: ... Alucard. Maria: My, aren’t you curt. That's fine. If you're still alive, let's meet again. Now, excuse me.
Maria uses watashi for herself and calls Alucard anata, and her speech pattern is as feminine as you’d expect.
The most obvious difference is that Maria pinpoints immediately that Alucard is a creature of darkness.
Encounter with Master Librarian
ENG (PSX):
Alucard: It's been a long time, old one.... Master Librarian: Oh it's you, Master Alucard. What do you need? Alucard: I need your help. Master Librarian: Young master, I cannot aid one who opposes the Master. Alucard: You won't go unrewarded... Master Librarian: Really? In that case just tell me what you need.
ENG (DXC):
Alucard: It's been a long time, old one... Master Librarian: Eh? Why, it's Master Alucard! ...Come to visit, have we? Alucard: I need your help. Master Librarian: Oh, but Young Master, I could never betray the good Count... Alucard: You won't go unrewarded... Master Librarian: Really? In that case, Just tell me what you need!
JP:
Alucard: Long time no see, old man... Master Librarian: My goodness, Master Alucard! What could you possibly need? Alucard: I'm sorry, but I need your help. Master Librarian: With all due respect, but to help a person who has bared his fangs against Lord Dracula... Alucard: I understand. I will give you a reward... Master Librarian: Is that so? In that case, I’m at your service!
The Master Librarian speaks politely, but not in keigo like Death. Alucard also sounds slightly more polite, or at the very least less blunt. I like the expression “bare his fangs” lol, it’s appropriate in this case.
Second Encounter with Maria
ENG (PSX):
Maria: So we meet again, Alucard. Alucard: It seems so. Maria: As friendly as ever, I see. It's strange. This castle is different than I remember it. Alucard: ......... This castle is a creature of Chaos. It may take many incarnations. Maria: So I can't trust my memories, huh? Oh well, I'll do my best. Good luck.
ENG (DXC):
Maria: Alucard, wasn't it? We meet again. Alucard: So it seems. Maria: As friendly as ever, I see. It's strange. This castle's different than I remember it. Alucard: ........ This castle is a creature of Chaos. With each rebirth, it takes a new form. Maria: And here I thought my mind was playing tricks. Well, there's nothing for it. Till we meet again.
JP:
Maria: We meet again, Alucard. Alucard: Maria, wasn’t it? Maria: As curt as ever, I see. Nevertheless, don’t you think it’s strange? The structure of this building is different from before. Alucard: ... Dracula’s castle is a product of chaos. It doesn’t have one singular form. Maria: So my previous experience won’t help me. Well, no point in thinking about it. Thank you.
I prefer the explanation of the castle’s nature in English, but I felt for poor Maria lol.
Third Encounter with Maria
ENG (PSX):
Maria: Impressive. You're very strong. Alucard: .......... What is it you want? You didn't come here to tell me that. Maria: You're right. Do you know the name Richter Belmont? Alucard: Of the Belmont Clan? Of course, but... Maria: He disappeared about a year ago and I'm sure he's here. If you see him, please let me know. Alucard: As you wish, my lady. Maria: Thank you. So you do know how to be a gentleman.
ENG (DXC):
Maria: You look like you're doing well for yourself. Alucard: ...And? You didn't come here to flatter me. Maria: True. Do you know the name Richter Belmont? Alucard: Belmont? Of course. Why? Maria: He disappeared about a year ago. I'm sure he's here now. If you see him, please let me know. Alucard: As you wish, my lady. Maria: Hmm. A gentlman after all. Thank you.
JP:
Maria: Great skills. I don’t think you need my help. Alucard: ... What do you want? I doubt that you came here to tell me that. Maria: Well. Do you know Richter Belmont? Alucard: A member of the Belmont clan? Maria: He's been missing for a year now. I'm sure he's here. If you see him, please let me know. Alucard: Very well. Maria: Thank you, you’re strangely kind. See you later.
I don’t know how Maria can say that Alucard is kind because he sounds even less polite than usual lmao. A bit of a different nuance, Alucard doesn’t say “oh of course I know a Belmont”, he simply expresses surprise at hearing that name again, which makes more sense.
Encounter with Richter
ENG (PSX):
Alucard: Who are you!! Richter: Open Hell's gate! Come forth my servants! Alucard: The scent of your blood... You're a Belmont! Richter: Crush this flea who invades my castle!
Alucard: I'm certain that was a Belmont. So he says he's the lord of this castle...
ENG (DXC):
Alucard: Who are you?! Richter: Servants, come forth from the gates of Hell! Alucard: ...Your blood. The scent of your blood... You're a Belmont! Richter: Attack! Rid my castle of this pest!
Alucard: A Belmont for certain. So he says he's the lord of this castle...
JP:
Alucard: !! Who are you? Richter: Open the gates to the underworld! Come forth, my servants! Alucard: The scent of your blood... You... It cannot be! Richter: Kill the insolent pest that defiles my castle!
Alucard: There is no doubt… That person was a Belmont. Did he say that he's the lord of the castle?
Richter says wa ga, which is extremely strange and may be the first sign that it’s not really Richter talking, as he normally uses ore. To explain, ware and its possessive wa ga are very archaic pronouns associated with “gods and powerful immortal entities, as well archaic kings, self-proclaimed lords and rulers”.
Fourth encounter with Maria
ENG (PSX):
Maria: So did you find Richter? Alucard: I don't know if he's the one you're looking for, but I found a Belmont. Maria: Really? So he is here! Alucard: But the one I saw was the enemy. He was the lord of this castle... Maria: That can't be true! You're wrong! I... I must go now!
ENG (DXC):
Maria: Alucard. Have you seen Richter? Alucard: There is a Belmont here. You were right about that. Maria: I knew it! Where is he? Alucard: ...The one saw was with the enemy. He called himself the lord of this castle... Maria: What? That's... That's impossible! You're wrong! ...I have to go!
JP:
Maria: So? Did you find Richter? Alucard: I don't know if he's the man you're looking for, but if it's a Belmont, I've seen him... Maria: Really? So he really came here! Alucard: But he appeared as an enemy. Moreover, as the lord of this castle... Maria: I-it can be! But if that's true, there must be a reason! Sorry, I have to go!
Again, a bit more obvious that Richter did not decide on his own to become an enemy.
Fight with the Succubus
ENG (PSX):
Alucard: !! Mother!! Lisa: That voice! Alucard, it's you! Alucard: I'm coming Mother! I'll save you!! Lisa: No Alucard! Don't come here! Alucard: But Mother! Lisa: It's all right! If my death can save others, I gladly surrender my life. Alucard: Mother! No!... Please! No!... Lisa: Yes Alucard! Watch me die and remember always my last words to you... Alucard: Yes Mother... Lisa: You must despise humans. They are to be your prey. Alucard: What?!... Lisa: Better for them to die than to let them compound their sins. Begin by slaying that one over there. Alucard: No...it wasn't like this... Lisa: What's wrong? Alucard? Alucard: My mother never said such a thing... Lisa: What do you mean!? Kill them and bring them happiness! Alucard: No! You're not my mother! What kind of demon are you!? Succubus: You broke free of my spell. I like that. Alucard: Demon, death is too good for you! Succubus: Come here little boy and show me what you've got.
Succubus: Darkling! I smell you're blood. You're a vampire... Could it be... Alucard: .......... Succubus: That strength, that beauty... You're the son of Lord Dracula. Alucard: Death in the dream world will set your soul wandering for eternity, Demon.
ENG (DXC):
Alucard: Mother!!! Lisa: ...Alucard? Is that you? Alucard: I'm coming, Mother! I'll save you!! Lisa: No, Alucard! Stay away! Alucard: Mother... Lisa: It's all right! If my death can save others, I gladly surrender my life. Alucard: No! I won't let this happen! Lisa: It's too late. ...Just stay with me. Hear my last words to you... Alucard: Yes, Mother... Lisa: Humans... You cannot live with them. You can only hate them, do them harm. Alucard: What?! Lisa: Theirs is such a hard lot. Release them from their pain. Begin with the ones who killed me. Alucard: No... It wasn't like this... Lisa: Alucard? What's wrong? Alucard: My mother never said such a thing! Lisa: What do you mean? I an your mother! Do as I say! Release them! Kill them! Alucard: No! You are not my mother! What kind of demon are you?! Succubus: Strong enough to break my spell, eh? I like that. Alucard: You deserve worse than death for this, demon. Succubus: Then give it to me, little boy. Don't be shy...
Succubus: Darkling! I smell your blood, your hunger... Alucard: .......... Succubus: That strength, that beauty... you really are the son of Lord Dracula. Alucard: Death in the dream world will set your soul wandering for eternity, demon.
JP:
Alucard: !! Mother!! Lisa: That voice! Alucard, you’re here! Alucard: Mother! I'm coming to save you! Lisa: No, don't come here! There’s no point! Alucard: But, Mother! Lisa: It's alright! If my fate brings happiness to everyone, I will gladly die. Alucard: No! What are you saying... Lisa: I’m so sorry, Alucard. My heart only breaks for you... However, keep my last words in mind, and carry on... Alucard: Mother... Lisa: Hate mankind, and kill them. Alucard: !! Lisa: Better for them to die than to let them compound their sins. Go ahead, kill that person there! Alucard: This is wrong... Lisa: What's wrong? Alucard? Alucard: She would have never said that... Lisa: What do you mean? Kill them and make them happy! Alucard: You are absolutely not my mother! What are you?! Succubus: How did you break free of my spell? I like that. Alucard: I won’t forgive you! Even death is too merciful for you! Succubus: You will slowly become my prisoner. Come on, boy.
Succubus: The... the scent of your blood... Why does your blood smell like the clan of the night...? It can’t be...! Alucard: ... Succubus: That strength, that beauty... ahh, it really is you! You’re the Count’s... Alucard: If you die in the dream world, your soul will die as well... Wander forever as an empty shell.
Alucard calls Lisa 母上 (hahaue), an honorific and dated word for “mother”, while “Lisa” calls him anata, still showing him respect.
The dialogue is generally more detailed. The word the Succubus uses for “spell” is 呪縛 (“jubaku”), which literally means “binding spell”, as in one that restricts your movements - presumably because she wanted Alucard to be trapped in his nightmare for eternity. She also specifies that she’d “slowly” make Alucard her prisoner: perhaps the more Alucard stays in the nightmare, the harder it would be for him to break out? Similarly, Alucard spells out that the Succubus will be left as an empty shell. Harsh.
Obtaining the Holy Glasses
ENG (PSX):
Maria: Alucard? Alucard: That voice? Maria? Maria: I'm sorry. You were right. He has joined forces with the enemy... Alucard: So it was a Belmont after all... Maria: But someone must be controlling him... Whatever we do, we can't harm Richter. Alucard: But he must be stopped. Maria: I know. Well...here. Take these with you. Alucard: What are these? Maria: If you wear them, you can see beyond evil illusions. Alucard: Thank you. 'Tis best then if you pray for the soul of your friend.
ENG (DXC):
Maria: Alucard? Alucard: That voice... Maria? Maria: I'm sorry. You were right. He is with the enemy... Alucard: Richter Belmont, in league with Dracula... Maria: He must be under someone else's control. We can't hurt him, whatever we do. Alucard: But he must be stopped. Maria: Yes, but can you? Then for all our sakes, show me that you will!
Maria: You're stronger than I am. You can save Richter. Will you? Please... Alucard: I can't promise that. But I will stop him. Maria: If it must be that way... Here. I found these. Take them. Alucard: And these are? Maria: If you wear them, you can see beyond illusions. Alucard: Thank you. I go to find Richter. Stay, and pray for him.
JP:
Maria: Alucard? Alucard: That voice... Maria? Maria: I'm sorry. It’s as you said. Alucard: So it was a Belmont after all... Maria: I don't think he’s doing this of his own free will... but my power isn’t enough... We can’t stop Richter. Alucard: But he must be stopped. Maria: I know. Well... here. Take these. Alucard: What are these? Maria: If you wear them, you should be able to see through evil illusions. Alucard: I see. It’s best if you pray that our fight doesn’t end in his death.
Obviously the DXC version is different because it precedes the fight with Maria that doesn’t exist in the PSX version.
The biggest difference is that Maria acknowledges that Richter is much stronger than her, and perhaps Alucard as well. I prefer how in English Maria instead insists that Richter cannot be harmed, foreshadowing the way to properly win the fight.
Fight with Richter
ENG (PSX):
Richter: I've been waiting for you. Alucard: Answer me. Why is a Belmont planning the resurrection of Count Dracula? Richter: Count Dracula rises but once every century and my role is over. If I can resurrect him, then the battle will last for eternity!
ENG (DXC):
Richter: I've been waiting for you. Alucard: Answer me! Why is a Belmont planning to resurrect Count Dracula? Richter: Dracula rises once a century. One chance for each Belmont to shine, and then we're finished, forgotten. If I bring him back now, the battle can last for eternity! Alucard: ........ You have lost your way. So be it, vampire hunter. Let your battle begin with me!
JP:
Richter: I've been waiting for you. Alucard: Answer me! Why is a Belmont planning to resurrect Count Dracula? Richter: The Count revives only once every 100 years. And my role is done... but my blood wants to fight! As long as he comes back, the battle will continue forever! Alucard: ........ If that is what you truly think, then so be it.
Richter here switches again to ore. Either he was being dramatic in his first cutscene, or this is a clue that he’s voicing his true doubts and desires. I like how he says “my blood wants to fight”: it encapsulates his character and how he sees himself as a Belmont.
Alucard’s line, which he only says if he obtained the Holy Glasses, is also different, and apparently omitted from the original translation. He doesn’t seem to know if it’s the real Richter talking or an external force, leaving to us the ambiguity.
Bad Ending
ENG (PSX):
Alucard: It's over... Belmont. Richter: So the war between humans and vampires finally ends here... Alucard: ........ Richter: What need for the shepherd when the wolves have all gone... My time on this world has come to an end...
Alucard: Mankind continues to fight, but it is a desperate fight to stay alive. I suppose that he chose a life of warfare since that was the only way he knew. Like you Father, he chose a path of destruction... Farewell, land of my birth. Never again will these eyes gaze upon your beauty.
ENG (DXC):
Alucard: It's over... Belmont. Richter: So the war between humans and vampires finally ends here... Alucard: ........ Richter: "What need for the shepherd when the wolves have all gone," eh? My time... It's over now...
Alucard: Mankind knows little but war and desperation. What other way of life did Belmont know? He and Father chose the same path... Farewell, homeland. I shall never see your beauty again.
JP:
Alucard: It's over... Belmont. Richter: That's right... The history of the war between humans and vampires ends here and now... Alucard: ... Richter: Now that there is no one to be hunted, there is no need for hunters... Maybe I don't belong here anymore...
Alucard: Mankind keeps fighting, but they fight to live. Because he was destined to fight, he may have sought a way to live to fight. Father, you as well chose a path of destruction... Farewell to my defiled homeland. I will never see you again.
A bit more hard hitting. I especially like the contrast between mankind who fights to live, and Richter who apparently wanted to live to fight. Also, in English the homeland is beautiful, but in Japanese, it’s “defiled”...
The resurrection of the Inverted Castle
ENG (PSX):
Shaft: You've defeated me. But all is not yet lost. The resurrection of Count Dracula is at hand!
Richter: No... What have I done... Maria: Thank you Alucard, for saving Richter. Richter: Alucard!? The same Alucard who fought alongside my ancestor       Trevor Belmont?... That was over 300 years ago! Alucard: No time for small talk. Is the person who controlled you in that castle over there? Richter: Yes, I think so... Alucard: Maria, take Richter and leave here. I'll finish this. Maria: All right... Good luck.
ENG (DXC):
Shaft: How inconvenient. But we've only just begun. The Master's ascension is at hand!
Richter: No... What have I done...? Maria: You saved him, Alucard. Thank you so much. Richter: Alucard?! The Alucard? You can't be. That was over 300 years ago! Alucard: Never mind that. Is the man who controlled you in that castle? Richter: Yes, I think so... Alucard: Maria, take Richter and leave here. I'll finish this. Maria: All right... Good luck.
JP:
Shaft: I failed... but it's not over yet. Lord Dracula’s resurrection is imminent!
Richter: What have I done? Damn, me of all people...! Maria: Thank you, Alucard. You saved Richter... Richter: Alucard?! It can’t be! You defeated Dracula along with my ancestor Trevor! Alucard: It doesn’t matter. Is the person who manipulated you in that castle? Richter: Yes, he should be... Alucard: Maria, take Richter and leave the castle. I'll finish this. Maria: All right.
Richter seems to feel more guilty in this version :(
(he also uses wa ga again to say “my ancestor”. I wonder if it’s to pay respects to Trevor and his whole bloodline)
Fight with Death
ENG (PSX):
Death: So you've made it this far... In the name of your Father, cease this foolishness. Alucard: Not while there is breath in my body. Death: Then for the Master, I'll feast on your soul this night!
ENG (DXC):
Death: So you've made it this far... In the name of your father, cease this foolishness. Alucard: Not while there is breath in my body. Death: Then, for the Master, I'll feast on your soul this night!
JP:
Death: So you've made it this far... I'll say it one more time. In the name of your father, retreat. Alucard: I never intended to. Death: I cannot stop you. Then, for the Master, I'll feast on your soul!
Nothing much to say, the English version is better.
Fight with Shaft
ENG (PSX):
Shaft: You have done well in making it this far. I would expect no less from the son of our Master. Alucard: So you are the one who was controlling Belmont. Shaft: Yes. I am the dark priest called Shaft. This world must be cleansed in the forge of chaos. Alucard: Why did you make Belmont lord of this castle? Shaft: For centuries, vampire hunters have defeated evil with holy power. But if two vampire hunters were to fight each other... Alucard: But Belmont's power is supreme among vampire hunters. None other could defeat him. Shaft: Exactly. That's why I removed him as a threat by making him into lord of this castle. Alucard: But your plan has failed. Shaft: Has it indeed? We'll see what happens after I destroy your weak human side.
Shaft: Ugh...No! Alucard: You claim to love the darkness. Go then and dwell there for all eternity! Shaft: But... but my goal is achieved... Count Dracula has come to purify this corrupt world with the searing flames of chaos!
ENG (DXC):
Shaft: All hail the son of our Master! Stronger than the mightiest hunter! Alucard: So you were the one controlling Belmont. Shaft: Yes. The dark priest called Shaft, come to cleanse the world in the forge of chaos. Alucard: You made Belmont lord of the castle. Why? Shaft: Because we tire of these hunters and their holy power. If they would but turn on one another... Alucard: ...Then the strongest one among them would eliminate the rest. Belmont. Shaft: Yes. So I converted him, brought him here to lure the rest, to force them all to fight and die. Alucard: But you never planned for me. And now you've failed. Shaft: Ha! Your human soul is frail as his was. You'll take his place-- I'll tear that soul apart!
Shaft: Ugh... No! Alucard: Your beloved darkness awaits you. Dwell there for all eternity! Shaft: Ha... I die victorious... Count Dracula rises even now! Let him purge the world in flames! Hahaha!
JP:
Shaft: Well done, you've made it this far. As expected from the son of my Master. Alucard: So you were the one controlling Belmont. Shaft: Indeed. I am the dark priest Shaft, the one who will bring destruction and chaos to this world. Alucard: Why did you make Belmont the lord of the castle? Shaft: Since ancient times, vampire hunters have destroyed evil with their holy power. But what if hunters fought each other...? Alucard: ... Belmont's power is far superior to anyone else’s. If it's a power of the same nature, you can't beat it in the first place. Shaft: Exactly. By manipulating him and setting him up as the lord of the castle, I eliminated those who would get in the way of the ceremony. Alucard: But this seems to be the end of it. Shaft: Is it indeed? As the final sacrifice, I offer thy mortal half!
Shaft: Im-impossible! Alucard: Those who have cast away their flesh have no place in this world. Dwell into your beloved darkness. Shaft: Ngh... b-but, my ambition has been fulfilled... My Master, Count Dracula! Bring destruction and chaos to this rotten world!
Shaft uses ware and generally speaks in a more archaic way. Funnily enough, when Alucard asks “why did you make Belmont the lord of this castle”, he uses the verb “祭り上げる”, which means both “to put on a pedestal” and “to kick up upstairs”.
Battle against Dracula
ENG (PSX):
Alucard: Father... Dracula: Well met. my son! It's been a long time. Alucard: I was hoping we would not see each other again. I can't allow you to leave here. Father. Dracula: You have ever been the ally of humans. Have you forgotten what they did to your Mother? Alucard: Think you I would forget such a thing? No. But neither do I seek revenge against them. Dracula: Still uttering the same nonsense. No matter. Now is the time to put aside your weak human side and join me in remaking this world! Alucard: Dracula. in the name of my mother. I will defeat you again.
ENG (DXC):
Alucard: Father... Dracula: Well met, my son! It's been a long time. Alucard: Not nearly long enough. I can't allow you to leave here, Father. Dracula: Do you still side with humanity? Have you forgotten what they did to your mother? Alucard: You think I would forget such a...! No, But neither do I seek revenge against them. Dracula: Enough of your nonsense! Away with your humanity! Stand with me as Prince of all the world! Alucard: You will never touch this world again. In Mother's name, I swear it!
JP:
Alucard: Father... Dracula: Oh, look who’s here... It’s been a long time, son of mine. Alucard: I hoped to never meet you again... Now that it has come to this, I can't let you go any further. Dracula: Are you still on the side of humans? Surely you haven’t forgotten what they did to your mother. Alucard: How could I forget? But my mother didn't want revenge on humans. Dracula: Are you still saying such nonsense? That's fine. This time, I will wipe away your vulgar blood and make you join my family. Alucard: Dracula! In the name of my mother, I will defeat you again!
Alucard already specifies that the reason he doesn’t hate humans is because of Lisa.
Dracula’s last line is “今度こそ下賤な血を消し去り、我が眷族に加えてやろうぞ”. “眷族” means both “family, household” and “followers”, and I don’t know which one fits better. I went with “family” to imply that Dracula has completely disowned Alucard and will only consider him his son if he gets rid of his human side. Also “vulgar blood”? Way to insult your darling wife.
Good Ending
ENG (PSX):
Alucard: Go back whence you came! Trouble the soul of my mother no more! Dracula: How? How is it that I've been so defeated? Alucard: You have been doomed ever since you lost the ability to love. Dracula: Ah...sarcasm. 'For what profit is it to [a] man if he gains the world, and loses his own soul'?. Matthew 16:26 I believe. Alucard: ......... Dracula: Tell me. What... what were Lisa's last words? Alucard: She said "Do not hate humans. If you cannot live with them, then at least do them no harm. For their's is already a hard lot." She also said to tell you that she would love you for all of eternity... Dracula: Lisa, forgive me. Farewell my son...
Alucard: So you made it. Maria: Alucard! I'm glad your all right! Richter: I'm sorry. 'Tis my fault that you had to fight your own father... Alucard: Fear not. I had my own reasons for destroying him. Richter: It must have been painful for you. Alucard: Indeed. But you must always remember that the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing... Richter: I understand. Maria: Alucard, what will you do now? Alucard: The blood that flows in my veins us cursed. 'Twould be best for this world if I were to disappear forever. Maria: ......... I see... Alucard: Farewell then. We'll not meet again. Maria: ......... Alucard... Richter: Don't you want to go after him, Maria? Maria: ......... I'm sorry... I can't let him disappear from my life. Richter: It's all right. Go after him. Perhaps you can save his haunted soul. Maria: Thank you, Richter... Fare thee well. Richter: And yourself, dear lady.
ENG (DXC):
Alucard: Go back to the abyss! Trouble the soul of my mother no more! Dracula: H-How?! How could I have lost?! Alucard: You lost your heart. Your soul. You'll never win without them. Dracula: Ah, how poetic. So I tragically sacrificed all I held dear in a search for power, did I? Alucard: ...Did you not? Dracula: ...Hmph. Tell me. What... What were Lisa's last words? Alucard: She said, "Do not hate humans. If you cannot live with them, then at least do them no harm, for theirs is already a hard lot." ...She also said that she would love you. For eternity. Dracula: Lisa, forgive me... Farewell, my son...
Alucard: So you made it. Maria: Alucard! You're all right! Richter: So you had to fight your own father? It's my fault. If I hadn't been so weak, we wouldn't be here. Alucard: Not so. I had my own reason to face him. Richter: Still... It couldn't have been easy. Alucard: It wasn't... But remember "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph..." Richter: ...is for good men to do nothing. Maria: So, what now, Alucard? Alucard: The blood in my veins is cursed. It's best for the world if I disappear, now and forever. Maria: ........ ...I see... Alucard: Farewell, then. We'll not meet again. Maria: ............ Alucard... Richter: Well, are you going after him, or not? Maria: ........ .... I'm sorry. I have to follow him. I can't just... Richter: It's all right! Hurry up and catch him. If anyone can save him, you can. Maria: Thank you, Richter. For everything. Richter: Thank you... Maria.
JP:
Alucard: Go back to where you should be! Don't make my mother suffer any more... Dracula: H-how? How could have I been defeated...? Alucard: Power can transcend limits only when there is something to protect it. You were doomed the moment you lost someone you loved, and stopped loving. Dracula: I see... It's ironic... I lost because I sought power... Alucard: ... Dracula: Alucard. Tell me. What were Lisa's last words...? Alucard: Do not blame humans. She said that those unable to forgive mankind will walk the path of their own destruction. Those who do not belong to that world shouldn't do anything... And Father... she said that she will love you forever. Dracula: Lisa... I was wrong...
Alucard: So you made it. Maria: Alucard! I'm glad you’re all right! Richter: I'm sorry. Because of me, you had to fight your father by blood... Alucard: Do not worry. It was simply my destiny to defeat him. Richter: Your words save me. Alucard: But remember. He's not the one who can bring ruin to this world: it’s mankind. Richter: I understand. I will engrave those words in my heart. Maria: Alucard, what will you do now? Alucard: This world has no need for the cursed blood that flows through my body. It would be better to remain unseen. Maria: ... I see... Alucard: Farewell then. We'll not meet again. Maria: ... Alucard... Richter: It’s alright, Maria. You don’t need to go after him. Maria: ... I'm sorry... I can't leave him alone... Richter: I see. If that is the path you choose, never regret it. Maria: Thank you... Then, I wish you well. Richter: Ah... same to you, Maria.
Lisa’s last words are “もし、人間が許されない存在であるなら、自ら滅びの道を歩む”. I don’t quite know how to translate it, but I think this is it. And Dracula doesn’t even say goodbye to Alucard.
Yes, Richter says “father by blood”, or “real father” (“実の父”), perhaps to emphasize the theme of bloodlines of the game. Alucard doesn’t say that he had his own reasons, but that it was his destiny, which is the other theme of the gane. Richter’s response is “そう言ってくれると助かる”, which literally is “It would be helpful if you could tell me that”, in any case very different from the empathy he offers in English. And I like that Maria doesn’t want to leave Alucard alone in his grief :)
Overall, the DXC script seems to be more of a free rewriting of the original PSX translation, but it didn’t take much from the Japanese version, which offers more details.

sorry i’m gonna talk some more about annie/johanna
first of all, i just think finnick and johanna would be so different as partners. finnick and annie give me the vibe as that one tweet that’s like “i don’t have any morals or opinions if a woman says something is right then it is” “um well maybe you should have morals and opinions” “you’re right i should”
in all seriousness, i think that even when they do fight finnick doesn’t even yell and he’s insanely good at communicating / compromising, which would be good skills for the capitol but also i think he’s just not a very intense person in the first place and that he HATES conflict. and then this is also based on my hcs of annie, but i imagine that she cannot handle conflict well and she struggles to compromise on something even she agrees with the compromise just bc she’s so pissed off, and that johanna is the exact same way. so when she and johanna fight, they fight. like we already know that johanna will say anything even if it upsets everyone (and she canonically did upset annie into having a flashback of some sort) so i think whenever they argue it’s a days long affair and that they only rlly try to figure out how to be more healthy about it when odesta’s son is like “ma where’s johanna i wanna see her” and since annie’s not gonna fill him in on all the tea she’s like “hm. we’re gonna have to work something out”
also it’s really interesting to think about johanna being more sensitive. i think there’s a fine line between censoring her thoughts (“it’s part of my therapy!” she ate) and just being more careful about saying things that are going to trigger annie, and that’s a balance johanna is going to try so hard to figure out. and it’s probably gonna be rlly hard bc when was the last time she had to figure something out for someone she cares abt, and when was the last time she had the luxury to care about someone, and will annie leave her if she messes up but it’s genuinely just a mistake and she’s consistently trying?
i do think that’s all gonna be resolved before they’re an actual couple, which is also something i wanted to talk abt. pre-canon i imagine they met at johanna’s victory tour and johanna lowkey had a small crush on her but also johanna has had a small crush on everybody at one point in time (in a “to cure the boredom” way lmao) so she doesn’t rlly think too much of it. just that when annie laughs it makes her wanna laugh too. and that when annie makes jokes johanna is like “why isn’t anyone laughing she’s literally a comedic genius.” i personally don’t understand this concept but sometimes when my friends enter relationships they’re like “omg i had a crush on them all throughout hs.” and they obviously don’t mean a full on consistent crush, just something that came and went in varying degrees, and i can totally see that with johanna. but also being a mentor + the quell + her morphling addiction + finnick’s death probably wouldn’t have given her much time to rlly think about it, so she doesn’t rlly realize how bad she has it until the war is over and they’re raising odesta’s kid
speaking of odesta’s kid! as soon as he’s born she immediately loves + wants to protect him + gets sick at the thought of never seeing him again and she’s just like “it’s just bc he’s a baby everyone feels that way abt babies.” which true but she also co-parents without any hesitation and when annie is like “i don’t want u to feel pressured to take care of him just bc we’re living together” johanna is like what the fuck are you talking about
oh and also i think annie is fully capable of being insensitive to johanna’s needs too, so it’s a two way street. like with her morphling addiction in particular, annie would probably continually ask her why she can’t just stop and johanna is so fed up with having to explain that it doesn’t work that way but they work thru it obviously
i think this is it. tbh this was more like an outline of how their relationship would work than actual hcs but i think there’s something beautiful about johanna learning how to be more loving and gentle without losing her bite. like she’ll still bully annie but she’d do it so lovingly and without actually hurting any feelings
oh i guess one more thing that’s not rlly a hc or anything just something silly i’ve been fretting abt: what if johanna and annie get together and they love each other soso much and then finnick shows up like “actually i lived and i’ve been finding my way to u all this time!!” like omg what would happen? my knee jerk reaction is odesta pt 2 but if i think abt it for more than a second it’s like. wow. annie and johanna went thru all these trials and tribulations and have grown into each other and made each other their home so it would be so fucked up if annie just fuckin left 😭😭 also annie and finnick wouldn’t be on the same pg anymore so if they even had a chance of getting back together they’d have to refamiliarize themselves w each other
but again that’s a silly worry bc if finnick hasnt returned in years he’s obviously not gonna show up when annie and johanna are happy and healthy and in love. that would be terrible timing and also this hinges on the fact that he most definitely didn’t get blown the fuck up when he obviously did. anyway i’m actually done now

2023 I start, 2024 slowly, but steady, hopefully.🐌 (long)
Muy buenas, im not sure how these year's reviews are done but I wanted to give it a go. I'll try to make it brief at least.
This year's been pretty big for a lot of reasons. Mostly personal reasons, but ill start with art cause the personal ones are moppy and bland as a sponge and we're here for art huehue >:')!!!
Tumblr media
I did talksprites for Maples Maid Service! Its a very cute cozy game i was very fortunate to lend a hand on. Peti and Bleak-Creep did and are still doing an amazing job with it. Always updating. Did you know that you can play it now on CoolMathGames? I thought that was cool
I did Manon's talksprites for Loveweb (i love loveweb and doing talksprites hehe) I loved the series since the beginning so i was pretty happy when knowing i was able to help @shadokwastaken a little, since this 2 part video was a lot of work!
Check all Loveweb!
I did my first long comic (dont check it! its messy to understand and im embarrased, im proud of finishing it tho!)
I learned a lot, and i hope i can still make comics.
Apart from these... I honestly haven't done something real GRAND or MIRACULOUS this year related to art.
i promised myself to draw for myself and draw what i want at the moment, or what makes me happy. So I've been drawing a lot of my characters or comics only for meee, or practicing anatomy-skulls, or gifts for people.
Im gonna keep it that way, thanks a lot for the people who hangs in there with me even if i do this. BUT IM SORRY!!! ill make something cool one day.
I'm focusing on working on comic stuff, i wanna do my own one day. And a year resolution i have its to finish this year the history things to start this year or the next one. I hope everyone is still here to walk with me that bumpy road haha
Tumblr media
And the sponge stuff
I'm not going to get much into it, but this year I started being like, a normal person my age. I mean. I'm still not fully there. and still have a long road there. But I've done some stuff I was terrified all my life of because of -things-
I got my first job, and I had to interact with people. Now a 1 year one with coworkers even. And they laugh with me and treat me nicely, even if im just being awkward. Its pretty mindblowing and still can't believe it sometimes.
Its kinda embarrassing, but it gives me a little hope that i can be out there and it'll be ok. And that i can be me and people will tolerate it.
I've been trapped scared, so much that i haven't been living at all. I got to one of those, things when people invite you to go somewhere? just because? ive never done that! i hate going outside but it was so cool aaa we went to watch a movie!!! i still have the tickets!!!
Maybe its because i haven't done anything never, and im really, not the brightest. But ive learned a lot this year. Ive been feeling very hopeful and happy.
Tumblr media
Hope you all have a smooth new year. Wishing the best
Lets keep walking, Slowly but steady 🐌
Thanks for reading and for everything 💚

When my family first bought a computer (1998?) there was an online, massive 3D chatroom called Active Worlds that my brother, our cousins, and I all participated in.
Tumblr media
The aspect of the platform that appealed to us was you could build using the game's massive library of objects. Every object was basically a seed that pointed to the filename of a 2D or 3D model. You could right click on any object and a property menu would appear with the filename of the object model displayed as well as any special action code the object would execute.
Tumblr media
Every wall texture was its own model, you'd just copy walls and move them with your arrow keys so they connected at the ends, flipped them to flat so you could make a floor and ceiling and voila you had a little house. Right click one of the walls and change its object code from wall12.rwx to something like arch01.rwx or door27.rwx, and now you had an entrance.
Despite the platform intended to be a 3D chatroom where people could meet in these prebuilt worlds and have conversations, and later evolving into something like a 3D internet browser where your avatar could walk into a building, click on a service or object to buy, and have your internet browser open up to complete the transaction, we just wanted to build.
Objects like picture frames or televisions you could embed an image or gif link into or buttons you could click on to execute the code inside another object meant we could build these elaborate houses. You'd approach the home and a mission impossible midi would play the moment you crossed an invisible threshold, you click a button near the front door and the door would rotate 90° on the Z-axis to show it "opened", but then intangible, shrunken cylinders colored red with a texture rewrite in the object properties would move back and forth each going in a different direction: security lasers! If your avatar came into contact, a different midi of an alarm would play and the door would close behind you. So that's what we did, we built elaborate homes and towns 11000+ coordinate units away from the main spawn areas.
Active Worlds is still a thing; Wikipedia lists its latest stable release in the middle of 2022. There are also some YouTube videos of people crawling through some of the abandoned worlds.
Your chat name that displayed on your avatar for all to see was changeable but I always logged in as Weird. Weird was my very first Internet pseudonym/username, and we played on this platform so much as if it were a game that I became very attached to that word. It always bothered me more when someone misspelled the word Weird than when they misspelled my actual name (probably because my name is commonly misspelled and Weird was a common word that I felt shouldn't have been misspelled— like 'really? you're gonna misspell 'weird' too? why do you hate me'). I wonder if anyone on the planet right now remembers playing AW and remembers the frequently active user Weird trawling across different worlds looking for an unclaimed plot of land to build his next labyrinth on.

!WARNIG! (blood, mention of depression and anxiety e.t.c, fighting, swearing)
Tumblr media
.
.
Background: You were always causing trouble as you did, being the second oldest Shiba, that is. One would think Taiju would treat you with no respect, but they'd be wrong... Well not exactly. You were never home, always out and about causing chaos and mayhem. You despised your brothers and sister for one reason. You never felt a part of the family. Besides being with the Black dragons which was run by your older brother Taiju Shiba. Unlike him your little sister, Yuzuha Shiba, was never involved with his kind of thing.
Mitsuya, on the other hand, was always looking after his sisters. In his free time he would sew or be dealing with Hakkai, your younger brother, and the rest of the second division of The Tokyo Manji Gang. Mitsuya was always a very caring person but could also be a total badass when needed. He showed that off at the Bloody Halloween.
Now to the story!!!!
.
.
(The day when You, Takemichi, Hinata, Hakkai and Yuzuha meet at the bowling alley.)
.
.
Hakkai and Takemichi bowled the ball perfectly in sync, which for a short moment suprised you, but that feeling quickly vanished. You realised they were going to be the best of buddies and have to stay there longer than you needed to and became very irritated. Yuzuha took a glance at you and your face scowled at her. This cause her to swiftly look away.
"Hey! You're Takemichi Hanagaki, right?!" Hakkai quickly said. "That's me! The one and only. And you're Hakkai Shiba!"
"Yeah! That's right!"
"ALRIGHT SROP GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH IT! I DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO COME IN THE FIRST PLACE!" Your voice boomed out, silencing the two boys. You stormed out in a fit of anger leaving the four newly found friends alone in disbelief, well at least Hinata and Takemichi were.
.
.
(When Kokonoi and Inui run into to you on the Street.)
.
.
You angrily stomped down the pathway, hands buried deep in your pockets. An irritated expression was plastered all over your face.
"And who might you be?! Trespassing on our land!" A voice echoed through the narrow street. A voice you knew all to well.
"For the record... Kokonoi, this is also my land. So cut the crap you two! I'm already in a shitty mood." You said making Inui chuckle while Kokonoi just stood there, mouth hanging wide open. Suprised that you weren't trying to murder him for being so disrespectful.
"I don't care just go and deal with those little annoying kids that'll be following me. I don't give a shit what you do just deal with them!" You commanded the group of young men.
After this sudden out burst, your figure slowly vanished from the group of Black Dragons's sight. Sternly walking away with a scowl, yoy kicked a near by pebble imagining it was Taiju's face.
.
.
(The meeting between the captains of ToMan)
.
.
You were walking by a few abandoned buildings in and alley way hoping to find someone to fight, to relieve yesterday's annoyance. Instead of finding a potential opponent, you just walk in on the Tokyo Manji Division Captains and The two leaders, Mikey and Draken, having a meeting about how to take down the Black Dragons. As you normally do, you get really bored so you hid your phone somewhere that was hidden enough not to be found but close enough to record every word said.
As you were leaving your eyes met a lavender haired boy, Mitsuya. You felt your cheeks heat up and he gave you a soft smile, as if saying "Don't worry! This stays between us."
.
.
(The next morning)
.
.
You woke up extra early before your meeting with The Black Dragons. This was made to discuss the future fight you'd heard about yesterday evening from the Tokyo Manji Gang in the alley way.
As you were looking for your phone, pulling the metal scrap off of it giving you a deep cut on the palm of your hand. The scrap fell to the floor creating a loud crash.
"FUCK!" You screamed infuriated at your weakness.
"Are you alright?!" A sweet voice quickly said as if it was planned. "I'm fine just a small cut". A hand reached for yours and when you looked up, the most mesmerising and gorgeous violet eyes met yours. "HEY WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE THAT GUY HAKKAI NEVER SHUTS UP ABOUT! Mitsuya Takashi right?" Your voiced echoed through the alley way, pouring into the roads either end. "That's me and you're, Y/N Shiba? You've built quite the reputation. Oh! Also, you might want this back." Just as he finished his sentence, Mitsuya handed you your phone back.
You quickly rushed over to the metal scrap, your hot blood spilling onto the vile ground, more than you thought it would. Lifting it up, you saw nothing but a note saying, "Maybe don't spy on us next time!" with a winky face at the end.
"YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY HUH!? MESSING WITH ME!?" You yelled at the boy tying to act tough. In reality though, you just waned to squeeze his cheeks and comment on how adorable he looked. "Stop acting tough, I know that's just a face you put on. I could tell from when I first heard about you from Hakkai."
Your face dropped, thinking really hard for a few moments, then falling to the floor sitting cross legged with your head resting on your hand. "So what if I'm depressed, always anxious and lock these feelings away? HEY WHY THE HELL AM I EVEN TELLING YOU THIS YOU MANIPULATING BASTARD!"
"It's really unhealthy! You should be talking to your friends-"
"I don't have any! Just drop it!" You snapped at him. "No one would want to be mine anyway. It's completely and utterly pointless trying Mitsuya."
"Takashi... Call me Takashi. Only my friends call me that, so consider us friends!" He softly yet proudly said holding his hand out. Almost on instinct, you grabbed his hand and pulled him into a warm embrace quietly thanking him for being so nice to you. Even if you were going to fight on Sunday.
.
.
(The day of the Christmas Showdown)
.
.
You were quietly walking up the icy steps to the church where Taiju was to discuss the plan for the fight. The cool air stinged your face and reddened your cheeks and the tip of your nose. Pushing the door open you were met with a cozy rush of air, pleasantly contrasting what was outside.
You shut the door with a slam and nonchalantly said, "So what's the plan Taiju?"
"We kill everyone, as well as the purple haired boy. Don't get any ideas! I saw the way you two look at each other when Hakkai asks you to drop him off." Your heart sank remembering how nicely he treated you in the past few days.
"You're such a stalker!"
Just as you said that Hakkai appeared from behing one of the many stone pillars. "It was actually me Y/N. Sorry" He mumbled quietly, his voice hinted with guilt. "YOU LITTLE-"
Just as you started saying that the door swung open revealing the silhouette of Yuzuha, Takemichi and Chifuyu. "Look what the cat dragged in." You simply stated with a hint of sadisticness and spite. "I've come to stop you, Taiju!" Yuzuha exclaimed.
"HA! You couldn't kill a fly. Don't be ridiculous!" He said, completely amused. "Watch me!"
Just as Yuzuha said that, her legs started moving on their own, she pulled a knife out and plunged it straight into Taiju's lower abdomen. You widened your eyes, not actually thinking she could do it. Within a matter of seconds, Taiju had punched Yuzuha back, picked up a pew and threw it directly at her, to your dismay, it missed.
You never really liked Yuzuha, she was always so over bearing and annoying. To some, they would say that's a stupid reason to hope someone should die. You were casually walking over and picking up the knife Taiju had pulled out of him and thrown on the floor. After you picked it up to go and finish your older brother's job, you leant down to Yuzuha while grabbing a fistful of her hair and said...
"Hope you go to hell." You let out a crazy laugh after saying that. You were going to stab your younger sister, but a certain someone stopped you.
"ARE YOU TYING TO DI-..." You stopped momentarily and whispered-yelled, "I told you not to come Takashi!"
"I can't let you kill your only sister! Do you want to turn into your brother!?" You stopped and thought for a second. "Y/N! What are you doing!? Kill him!" Taiju's voice echoed out. "I'm really sorry Taka." In that singular moment, you'd swung your fist into Mitsuya's face and knocked him out. "Good. No more hesitations!"
"Yes brother..."
For some reason Takemichi thought it would be a good idea to charge straight at you and Taiju in an attempt to fight the two of you. You step in front of Taiju and sent a sharp kick to Takemichi's face knocking him out.
After a minute, Mitsuya, Yuzuha and Takemichi woke up and with Chifuyu, they watched as Mitsuya told them to stay away so they don't get hurt. "This is between me and Taiju."
"Like hell it is! Don't go forgetting about me Takashi!" You yelled in annoyance wanting to make sure Taiju didn't know about your sudden feelings for Mitsuya. You stepped in front of Taiju, pretending to protect him. Mitsuya looked at you solemnly and started to bolt towards you. He landed one punch on you, obviously you let that happen. You sent an aggressive kick back which he dodged.
Because you were so focused on Mitsuya not getting attacked by Kokonoi or Inui, you didn't notice Chifuyu sneaking up behind you. He quickly hit you in one of the pressure points, causing you to black out. Your body slammed into the crimson carpet with a loud thud.
With that Mitsuya moved on to Taiju doing his best to keep a poker face. Him and Taiju battled it out for 7 minuted untill finally, Taiju announced,
"He's all yours Inui!" Inui jumped off from a bench behind Mitsuya. He was grasping a metal pole so tightly, god knows where he got it. Inui swung it straight at Mitsuya's head, knocking the lavender haired male back to his side of the fight where his gang was.
You heard a body slam against the ground, waking you up abruptly. You got up, your wrist sore realising you'd probably broken it. Mistuya's body was laying infront of you a few feet away. Eyes widened, you turned to Inui with a menacing scowl, sending a shiver down his spine. You hurdled towards him with pure rage, he pulled a knife from his pocket and aimed it straight at your neck. You barely managed to redirect it.
To your dismay, he was still able to plunge it deep into your shoulder. Blood pouring out rapidly. You started panicking, Takemichi managed to push Inui off of you before he could do more harm. You fell back while holding your stab wound, applying as much pressure as humanly possible.
Mitsuya woke up to the sound of Yuzuha's cry. "Y/N!!!! I'M COMING! DON'T WORRY!!" She started running as quick as possible, her eyes set on your figure breathing heavily on the floor. Mistuya's eyes widened, he wasn't sure why he felt so worried. Was he falling in love with you? Did he somehow like you? No he can't, you're the enemy. These thoughts were brought to sudden stop when Yuzuha started crying. Tears streaming down her redend cheeks like a waterfall.
Mistuya picked himself up and ran over to you two. He knelt down and checked your breathing and pulse. He sighed in relief when everything was OK. "...Taka?" You mumbled with your remaining energy. "I'm here Y/N. It's all going to be OK, I promise."
Just as he finished his sentence, the door of the church flew open, revealing a very bored looking Mikey. His cheeks and nose were red from the chill outside. Taiju's jaw dropped and yelled,
"IS THIS SOME KIND OF JOKE?! HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET PAST THOSE GUARDS?!"
"They were weak." The blond male stated.
"I'LL SHOW YOU WEAK!"
Taiju marched forward and punched Mikey in the face, knocking him out cold... momentarily.
"HAHA! So much for the Invincible Mikey!" He laughed out in short lived victory once Mikey got up and sent his signature rocket kick at him. Taiju's eyes rolled bad as he fell into unconsciousness.
.
.
(Meanwhile with Draken outside)
.
.
Hundreds of Balck Dragon members layed passed out in the frosty white snow. He was leaning on his bike which was next to Mikey's. Draken was simply waiting for Mikey to end things inside.
.
.
(Christmas Eve, on a hill in a park, Mitsuya and you have started dating once you got better.)
.
.
"Come on Taka! It's not much further!" You said with a wide grin plastered across your face. The moonlight perfectly lighting it. You were dragging your boyfriend, Takashi Mitsuya up a hill in your a very small park that basically no one went to.
The air was cool and crisp and nipped your nose turning it bright red. Takashi's hair flowed with the soft breeze. Fingers tangled and staring out at the city, you announced,
"Taka, I love you." He whipped his head to face you. Your eyes locked with his as he tried to utter some words. His mouth opened then closed and then finally he spoke,
"I love you more Y/N." His sweet voice made you shiver. Takashi's arm snaked around your waist and he rested his head on your shoulder. You stared out at the glittering lights littering the horizon.
"I love you most..." You quietly whispered.
The End ♡
