🦂DEMON FORMS: ASMODEUS 💄
Tumblr media
AN: Unfortunately, the concept of hypnosis is a major theme for my OCD so I can't really write him as creepy as I want to. Alas, I tried. Fucked up Asmo supremacy. also I was tryna keep this sfw in terms of *spicy* content bc thats for a different post hehehe. As always, feel free to check out my obey me world building tag for more demon headcanons and since con is over I can work on requests!
Inspiration for this part: literally everyone who has ever drawn Asmo with a scorpion tail like he DESERVES also @noecoded bc they have the BEST Asmo art ever. Also @princessasmosprincess has been such a major help in writing this! ily Michi 😘 thank u for letting me pick ur brain bby
TWs: Bugs (scorpions), mind manipulation, alcohol (part 4), vauge reference to nsfw stuff (part 3), demons being demons, body horror? Maybe?
● Level 1.5. you know, in the Percy Jackson books, how Aphrodite appears as whatever you think is most beautiful? Asmo is kinda like that. Not fully, but if you are more attracted to say, dark hair, he will have darker hair. (Cute note: if you fall in love with him for realsies, this stops happening, and you just see. Him.) Like Belphie, he is alot more… mental with how he freaks people out. Even without hypnotism, if he asks you to do something, you feel like you want to agree. Only Asmo can make you think taking out the garbage when it's his turn is YOUR idea. He glows under blacklights because… scorpion. His teeth look normal from a distance, but up close, you can see how sharp they are. His eyes shift through every possible color, changing each time he blinks. His pupils are heart shaped. He gets cold really easily and will make it everyone's problem.
"MC! I'm going to freeze to death, please, save me!" The overly dramatic Avatar of Lust drapes himself across your lap, intent of using you as a personal space heater. Nights in the Devildom just get so cold! His poor, beautiful heart can't handle the subzero temperatures! And of course the last argument between Levi and Mammon managed to complete destroy the heating system. So it's your solemn duty as Asmo's favorite human (don't tell Solomon) to keep him warm!
● Level 2. His nails get longer and sharper, and even when talking, it sounds like he's singing. If he actually starts singing, you will find yourself dancing or lulled into a false sense of security depending on the song. He actually caused the dancing plague this way! He is capable of using his carapace as a sort of natural corset, controlling each segment to give himself the desired silhouette. Somehow, Asmo is wonderful at knowing exactly what you desire. Not just in a sexual way, he can figure out your ambitions after one conversation. If he decides to talk to you, everything else will kind of...fade away. How can you focus on anything when his eyes fade from pink to purple to blue... What were you talking about again?
Asmo thought the house was empty, that it was safe for him to sing without consequence. Unfortunately, you came home early, which led to the awkward incident where you began dancing the moment you walked inside. At first, you thought you were hit by some curse, screaming in surprise as your body moves on its own. Hearing your shrieks, Asmo rushes downstairs, fussing over you. Luckily, you weren't under his spell long, so when he stopped singing, you stopped dancing. He was very apologetic after that.
● Level 3. He grows several extra limbs on his sides. They are small little insect legs that are basically useless. He likes to annoy his brothers by tickling them with his weird lil bug arms. But otherwise, Asmo is EXTREMELY self conscious about them because bugs aren't stereotypically cute. He can keep his wings bc they are cute. BUT HE ALSO HAS A SCORPION TAIL. The stinger is heart-shaped. It's adorable. It also has venom capable of making you so horny you die! Which is... slightly less adorable.
It was quite the sight, seeing Asmo, shirtless with several small arachnid limbs, covered in a hard exoskeleton as he chases Satan around the house, claiming he needs to be less grumpy. Satan threw a pillow at his brother, causing you to laugh. Bad move. Now Asmo has locked his eyes on his next target. You.
● Level 4. You know how so many Greek monsters are giant creatures with the face of a beautiful woman? That's Asmo. He has the body of a scorpion-if a scorpion was the size of a horse - and face so gorgeous, you might cry or go blind. He sings so sweetly to lure in prey. Basically, he's a siren-scorpion monster from hell! He usually won't take this form because, honestly, he thinks it's ugly. So for the most part you are only going to see a scorpion with Asmo's face scuttling around if he is feeling particularly emotional. Like when he gets a little bit too tipsy and his insecurities plague his mind.
It was rare Asmo would get properly drunk. At least the type of drunk where he is miserable. Usually it's a very... drunk girl in the club bathroom who just LOOOVES your shoes and wants to know who did your eyelash extensions 🥺 sort of energy. So hearing straight up wailing from his room after a long night at the Fall was...unexpected. What was even more surprising, was what you found when you opened his door to try and comfort the demon. A large scorpion with the head of the Avatar of Lust, standing in front of a broken mirror with mascara streaming down his face. You only hesitate a moment before making your presence known. Asmo starts to cry more, sobbing about how terrible he feels having you see him like this. In the form that he considers the definition of ugly. You are quick to reassure him, naming each thing you find beautiful about his more demonic looking self. Like the way his armored body catches the light, reflecting rainbows across each segment. Or how his stinger is heart shaped. Or the fact that even without proper hands, his hair and makeup is still flawless. Aside from minor damage due to his tears. Soon enough, you have a giant scorpion sleeping on your lap like an overgrown cat. You decide not to mention it in the morning.

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥ This meme definitely favors canons more, but I hope OC’s still can make it somehow work with their own lore, and lil’ fandom of friends & mutuals. Multi-Muses pick the muse you are the most invested in atm. tagged by: @forseenclade thank you ! man i am so bad at doing memes.  tagging: @blossomingbeelzebug @zhrets @lupichorous @dansiere yayayayayayayaya
My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless / complicated [ z/iggy stardust is DEFINITELY not my original character, but 683 is, and every single part of how i rp ziggy from his backstory to his personality was made up by me. that being said, ziggy is still a character that exists in media. ]
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO. [ im pretty sure ziggy is tied with the thin white duke as one of b*wie’s most famous fictional personas? ]
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES ? / NO / IDK.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK.
Are they underrated?  YES / NO / IDK. [ maybe a little overrated ]
Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO.
Were they relevant for the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG.
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO.
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL. [ celebrity rock god of limitless talent vs inevitable overrated washup. most celebrities are polarizing anyways ]
How strictly do you follow canon?  — there isnt much canon to go off of i think? the album barely even states if ziggy is an alien and b*wie himself got really wishy washy about it (sometimes saying z is a human who was contacted by aliens, he was an alien himself, etc). i dont think we know anything about him besides what he looks like (red hair / weird eyes / pale / “well hung” lmao) and he has a band called the spiders from mars, he plays the guitar left handed, he’s bisexual + androgynous, and he’s charming and popular with the teens but inevitably is a victim of his own ego. and he dies.  that too.  but that’s literally it! we know Nothing else about him.  so i filled in all the gaps because my brain has worms.  theres a little bit of the story that verges on fantasy (that he’s some sort of messiah messenger for “the infinites,” whatever the fuck THAT means, david) so i nix that because i prefer hard scifi.  and theres one BIG part that i just ... deleted out of his canon, in that the world is ending in 5 years in his timeline, and he’s like ... aware of this ?  but that’s dumb and confusing.  i legit dont care anymore. my OC now.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  im so embarrassed i know i could be genuine and actually try but i have brain blockajjolajlakala33lak33klak333ak3jka3akjj323j3 i guess it’s like ... ziggy is truly the ultimate expression OF humanity because he reveals everything both wrong and right about the human condition, he literally embodies the best of humanity and the worst at the same time, he’s a really interesting critique on the idea of genuineness/earnestness vs commercalism in art, the perils of fame, and also how humans are so inherently corrupting?  a lot of thematic stuff i like exploring is like what is innate to humans vs what is learned behavior, what are things that humans do naturally that ziggy mimics out of his desire to be like us?  i think he has a really good story arc -- he went from being a literal nameless CLONE in a society full of pragmatic forward thinking science-oriented people to a sell out rockstar celebrity in a society of people that value individualism and self expression and art, but in the process completely lost his mind and himself and gave into the worst that humanity has to offer like rampant selfishness, drug abuse, self destructive tendencies, etc. characters changing is always interesting and ziggy truly changes for the worse -- but he is never just black and white, he was never good and then suddenly evil, he just was always the same person putting on different facades and trying to be himself by constructing an identity that maybe was who he wanted to be versus who he actually is.  i dont know what im talking about. hes just an alien trying to be too hard to be human in all the wrong ways.   i just like how “gray” ziggy is. he isnt good or bad, he can be very nice and he can be very mean, he’s overtly showboating confident but at the same time deeply afflicted with self-consciousness (why tf else would anyone be So obsessed with how they present themselves?).  hes an icon of individualism but also commercialism.  he’s freakishly alien but is almost more human than humans themselves.  he struggles as lot in his head -- which makes for interesting writing, i guess !!  Im so emabrrased im not going to go back and read what i wrote so if i typoed dont look at me
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  i think ziggy comes across as really mean and nothing else.  his horrible bitchy rudeness comes across as hee hee hoo hoo sassy isnt he a rascal when it’s supposed to be more like ... he’s so far gone into the celebrity delusion he’s conflated aggressive rudeness with charmingness because no one told him otherwise and everyone worships him to the point where he’s just given into the delusion that he can do no wrong.  i think theres the general simplification problem that happens with a lot of fictional characters, it’s easy to see him as just a whacky sassy glittery quirky rockstar when i guess it avoids the inherent tragedy of like ... everything else about him. his totally fake and false sense of identity built up from superficial things like fame and labels and stardom.  maybe my version of ziggy is just too weirdly depressing and sad when i know his original iteration wasn’t quite so ... grim.  im not very sure tbh.
What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  hmmm ... a lot of things! i just really got into b*wie stuff in early 2019, i’ve ALWAYS loved aliens and sci-fi, and i was really shocked that db sets up such great visual storytelling potential but does it through music.  i just really liked ziggys “story” and i like any chance to think about aliens so i just got invested into piecing together a little backstory for him using, like, the cumulative knowledge of literally every other piece of science fiction ive ever consumed in my life.  this was summer 2019 when i was making initial pitches for my thesis film, and so i just randomly decided to pitch “animated version of ziggy stardust” as one of the potential ideas.  shockingly everyone liked it a lot and so did my professor who thought it was really cool, and then i just ended up sticking with the character and working on him for an entire year.  ziggy became my hobby but also my homework.  he was such a fun character because everything about him was interesting to me and i had just enough source material to have a starting point but so much room to take him in any direction i wanted to.
What keeps your inspiration going?  —  honestly, yooooou guyssssss. i have some really amazing fwends that ive met thru here .... and some of our dumb stupid stories have literally become NOVEL length. it just self generates inspiration because you realize the limitless amount of stories you could tell with this one single character when your character enters his story or he enters their story and etc. etc.  ive drawn endless amounts of comics and stuff for him ... ziggy is just so endlessly interesting ...   cringe be cringed bro but recently (i know this sounds dumb bear with me or die.) ive kind of realized a lot of how i rp z comes as some metaphor for the experience of being an asian immigrant/being asian in the US -- his home “culture” is a lot stricter than the rampant selfish individualism of the usa (he only lives in the uk and usa, so he thinks the whole planet is like this), he’s dissuaded from standing out from his community and his selfishness becomes a community burden rather than a personal flaw, and when he does come to earth, he goes through such awful culture shock, literally nothing makes sense to him and everything is Different.  and while some things are different in a Nice way, something things are different in an Awful way, and he’s given the option between losing his true personal identity as an atominan and giving it up to be a human.  the allure of being a human is a little too much but losing yourself like this is traumatic, in a way.  obvs like ... a little silly and definitely not something that i actively intended to put into his story arc, its just something that fell into place cuz i guess i worked so closely with my own personal experiences and feelings of “alienation” (pun intended) to try to understand how he would feel being a literal alien an shid. its cathartic to write about him. but he also has a lot of my own personal interests just thrown in -- 70s fashion, scifi, science, tryhard implications about human nature, art history, whatever dumb nonsense i get into
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO / SOMETIMES?
Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO  [ i would prefer information to spring up organically in the story but cuz threads always get dropped i end up just telling people outright. i didnt want anyone to know his home planet/his old name but barely anyone writes enough with ziggy to get to that point to reveal it (i legit managed to do it organically Once) so i just had to write it in a post lmao orz ]
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES / NO [ wrote a ton of drabbles ! drew a ton of comics! ]
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO / I DUNNO?
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / HAHA NO.
Are you a sensitive person?  YES  / NO. / IDK ?
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  definitely!  like i said ... my version of ziggy ended up being the protag of my thesis film and for 1 yr straight his characterization, backstory, design, and even how i wanted to animate his fucking movements (ziggy stardust timing charts.) were beaten to death in a classroom environment, torn apart and rebuilt into something better.  had i stayed with what i originally wanted to go with, ziggy would be so different than how i write him 2day. amazingly my pre production professor is a literal two time emmy award winning storyboard artist and animator so he definitely helped me design him (my version of ziggy is meant for ... a cartoon, obviously, not real life) and give him a better backstory?  and my post production professor is a retired disney animator who worked on hercules and a bunch of old disney channel shows?  had i gone wah wah wah i dont want to hear ur critiques i wouldnt have made him better.  if you ever think ziggy seems inconsistent or poorly written ... tell me !! i literally major in ... animation. cartoons. entertainment.  my job is to entertain you. if you are not entertained, there is a problem.  ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED ????
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  —  I LOVE QUESTIONS? i love ... answering questions ... if you ask me something ill come kiss you.
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  sure! i dont know why that would happen, though, because i mean ... he’s an OC. but i gues someone could be like “i feel like this is incongruous to things you’ve previously established in his character” or somethin
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  i feel like a lot of b*wie stans would find my version of ziggy weird but i mean thats fine!  i guess my goal is to have a well written character, not necessarily an accurate version of ziggy
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  if you hate MY version of ziggy thats fine but if u hate ziggy stardust in general (like the bowie concept) then u need some taste what the fuck is cooler than a egomaniac genderless bisexual rockstar alien with red hair? nothing. go back to watching your CW shows you dirty filthy normie
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  yes! dm me though. dont clown me on the dash like that.  i usually write your replies 12 AM - 4 AM so it’s expected.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   —  hmmm ... maybe! i do like to talk to people and i am VERY nice, trust me, if youre ever sad ill do everything i can to make you feel better. but im quiet! i dont really reach out to people and i tend to just keep to myself.  im not very social or extroverted at all haha i barely can make ooc posts without feeling like god’s coming to beat my head in with a brick. im sitting here at 5:30 AM with this meme feeling like if i post it i will die (BUT I MUST)

This time: A moment of balance between Thrawn and Eli.
Next Time: Thrawn and Ezra receive their orders. Tensions rise.
-/
It was late. Even for a Chiss. Very few lights were on, as the majority of those within the manor are able to see well enough into the infrared not to necessitate lights, though ornate candles burn at different points down several of the halls. It was a decorative choice, sure, but it also was meant to cater to the human whose rooms were directly across from his. In a way, Thrawn could appreciate it like this, the way the yellow-orange light flickered and splashed across the halls, highlighting historical, ornamental art.
But at the same time, he found he much preferred the remainder of the estate in its natural, unlit fashion, the purple black skies, hazy with clouds visible from the floor to ceiling windows in the main lounge that overlooked the front of the manor. Everything was dark, and even with the ability to see into a superior spectrum, most everything had cooled thanks to the temperature regulation systems.
A flicker of lightning danced across the sky, visible through the windows. After a moment followed the deep, rumbling thunder. Thrawn stopped just inside the lounge, head tilted toward the window. It was not yet raining. More lightning flashed, the heat of it lingering long after the light disappeared. Soon.
He did not entirely dislike this place. It was far more appropriate for his brother than he, but it was symbolic that they’d been chosen. That both he and Thrass were destined for far greater things. It was not home, however. His place was aboard a ship, in the inky darkness of space, hurtling across the stars. He could appreciate any number of planets and their peoples, but more importantly, their art - but it would not compare to what drove him. What defined him. He was never going to settle down in this place and live out the rest of his days.
The sound of footsteps from another hallway drew his attention. They were not loud nor tentative - not an attendant, then. They were measured. Even. More thunder crashed. They did not break pace, so he knew it could not be Thrass.
“Surprised you’re up,” Came the casual greeting, the smooth-tone voice that belonged to Eli Vanto. He approached the wall length windows with a sense of wonder, hands going to his hips and eyes turned skyward. “Gonna be one hell of a storm,” He said, words lilting with the mildest twang in Sy Bisti. “Kinda reminds me of summer storms on Lysatra.”
There was a long pause, nearly an entire minute of lightning and the successive thunder before Thrawn spoke. “Do you miss it?” He asked, his Sy Bisti accented ever so slightly with Cheunh.
“Sometimes,” Eli admitted. “But not as much as I expected.” He turned his head, giving Thrawn a once over, though he could only really see the Chiss’s left side. “What’re you doing up at this hour?”
“I could ask you the same question,” Thrawn fired back, glowing eyes casting the slightest haze on his cheeks. “The hour is not entirely scandalous for a Chiss, as you no doubt know, but I do not believe it is an hour a human strives to be conscious for.”
Vanto conceded the point with an embarrassed smile. For a second, Thrawn found his eyes drawn to the curve of the other man’s mouth, then shifting up to see the similar softness in his eyes. This was the facial expression of a man Thrawn knew. He recognized Vanto’s sheepish embarrassment and knew immediately what it was. In this, at least, he knew his old comrade. It was a boon that he clung to.
“You were up working on research,” Thrawn appraised him, seeing the lingering dampness of his hair on the next lightning strike. “Your sleep cycle hasn’t reset.”
A purse of Eli’s lips indicated that Thrawn was right.
“Three days?”
“Two and a half,” The human clarified. “But technically, I was up for around four.”
“You shouldn’t do that,” Thrawn advised. “The human body is not designed for such-” He broke off, realizing he’d slipped right into command-tone, speaking to Eli as though he were the other man’s superior. It was habit. Instinct. Completely uncalled for, but the words had left his lips and could not be taken back.
Vanto turned to face him bodily, looking up at him now. He smiled, again, and Thrawn froze. “You’re right.” Then, laughing to himself, a small huff of a thing, he added, “Sometimes I think I’d kill to be an ensign again. Only time I get a solid eight these days is when I pull kriff like this.”
Thrawn hummed, pensive. He watched Vanto’s posture, intent on being sure there was no lingering discontent from his words. “I had not meant to reprimand you,” He said. “I was merely-” Merely what, exactly? Thrawn wasn’t entirely sure how to continue. Concerned? Surely he knew Vanto could take care of himself. It was unlike him to speak so carelessly.
“I know. I’m not angry.” He shrugged. In fact, he seemed amused.
It only confused the Chiss more. “You are more expressive now,” Thrawn explained. Then, he added, masking his frustration with his usual cool, “I do not understand.”
“You’re thinking too much.” Lightning flickered, and for a moment Thrawn could see the deep cinnamon-brown flecks in the depths of Vanto’s dark eyes. “I’m goin’ to go down to the kitchens and kick out whomever your dumbass brother has on duty for no reason at o’three hundred. I like makin’ my own breakfast when the situation allows. Want to join me?”
“That will undoubtedly upset Thrass,” Thrawn said. “He will-”
Vanto’s eyes sparked mischievously, one brow rising. Thrawn swallowed hard, taking in the nuance, cataloging it for later reflection. The complexities that he’d layered on, the way he was the same Eli Vanto, and yet at the same time this confident, collected Captain Ivant, all of it was overwhelming, heady. Enticing. “Tell me you don’t like pissing off your brother,” Eli prompted.
That was all the convincing it took, not that Thrawn had been planning to turn down an invitation to make further amends with his current commanding officer. “I have no idea what you mean, Captain,” Thrawn said, facial expression neutral and voice smooth as stone.
“Right,” Eli drawled. “C’mon, Commander, let’s see if I can’t turn out a decent meal with whatever delicacies the chefs keep on hand.”
“Lead the way.”
-/
“One thing I will say about the Chiss is that y’all certainly have better taste in breakfast foods than the Empire ever did.”
“You did not find their powdered protein rations enjoyable?” Thrawn asked dryly, cutting a piece of omelette with his utensil and tasting it. It was good. Not purely Chiss cuisine, but not like anything he’d eaten throughout his time with the Empire, either. It was a fusion of the two.
“I’m a Wild Space hick, remember? My people ate real food they grew, not powder and gel.” Thrawn hummed. Eli plucked a pot of some kind of jellied sauce off a tray in the center of the expansive kitchen island and spooned a generous portion over his own. “You have this stuff? It’s kind of spicy, definitely not meant for this kind of dish, but it’s good.”
Thrawn gestured for it and Eli passed it over. “You’ve cooked in this kitchen before,” He mused, as he followed Eli’s lead. He’d had this sauce before, but it was meant for expensive and exotic meat cuts, not an egg scramble with common vegetable greens. He tried it, and found the spice to be agreeable but not overwhelming. It brought out the buttery flavor of the egg-wrapped greens.
“Yeah. Kinda spent some time here after I got back from Grysk Space.” He didn’t elaborate. Thrawn didn’t expect him to.
“So I was told,” He agreed. They ate in silence, both watching the storm through the window. The silence between them was comfortable. Familiar, with the charge of something new. “My brother considers you a friend,” He said slowly, after a while.
Eli shrugged. “That bother you?”
“Not at all,” Thrawn said, and Eli frowned. “I believe he was baiting me.”
“No doubt he was.” The human turned on his stool, facing him instead of the window in front of them both. “He was worried about you, before I went away.”
Thrawn got the feeling ‘away’ was the mission that got him and Vah’nya captured, but ignored it in lieu of keeping the mood light. “He is not all bad,” The Chiss admitted. “More infuriating than anything.”
“You can say that again,” Eli agreed. “Though I think I’d take infuriating and obtuse over genuine. The few times I’ve seen that were freaky, even for me.”
“Now I know why he likes you,” Thrawn didn’t smile, but there was a sort of warmth to his gaze, a fond quirk of his lips as he regarded his Captain. “You embrace him as he is.”
“I don’t know about that.” He returned to his meal, took a bite, chewed, and swallowed before continuing. “He’s a pain in my ass, even when we’re on the same side of an issue.”
“That is his way,” Thrawn agreed. “It’s been twenty years since I’ve spent any real time with him and he’s hardly any different than when I left.”
“That right?”
Thrawn considered it a moment. “He is a bit more over the top now. I suspect it’s due to political tensions that have put strain on his position.”
“You’re not wrong there,” Vanto said.
“I do wonder if it is similarly related to me, though.”
A pensive look crossed Vanto’s features. “We’d be on the brink of war even if you stayed with the Empire. Seems to me like the fissures between the ruling families have gone on ignored for a while. They run deep. I’d prefer to keep them fighting it out in assemblies and council meetings rather than open warfare. The Grysk will be waiting for us, if or when that happens.”
“I think you believe it is a matter of when, not if,” Thrawn pressed.
“Perhaps,” He looked out the window as lightning struck and thunder followed, crisp and loud.
“Can you elaborate?”
This time, Eli fixed him a look. It was regretful, but resolute. “Not yet,” He said. “I’m sorry.”
Thrawn nodded. “I understand. It is… difficult.”
“Weird, you mean.” Eli smiled, small and sad. “It’s weird to be your CO. It must be even weirder to you for me to be comfortable in your family home.”
“It is strange, yes,” Thrawn supposed. “But I do not resent you for it. You are-” He stopped. Considered. “I owe you a great debt,” He said, but Eli could see the way the cogs in his mind were turning. It wasn’t what Thrawn wanted to say, or at least that’s what Eli seemed to think.
Vanto rose from his stool, taking his empty plate and Thrawn’s, rinsing them both in the sink while Thrawn sized him up, analyzing him in the following silence. He let it happen, let the Commander work through his assessment of the situation on his own. The steaming device that sterilized any used cookware and dishes was cycled on with the touch of a button before he returned to his seat, a half-drank mug of tea sitting in front of his stool.
“I need to make something clear with you,” Eli said. “Any debt you could possibly owe me has been paid in full.”
Thrawn protested, “I do not-” But Eli held his ground.
“I wouldn’t be who I am today if you didn’t yank me out of the supply track all those years ago and insist I be your translator. I’ve learned a hell of a lot from you and I’m happy to be where I am.” Conviction laced through his words. “This is where I need to be.”
They stared at each other, irises darting back and forth, almost like some unspoken battle of wills. “I am glad you chose to come to the Ascendancy,” Thrawn said finally. A rare note of overt sincerity flavored his tone. “I do not think I have ever told you as much.”
“Yeah,” Vanto said. “Me too.”
-/
Thrass rolled his eyes spectacularly as he passed by the outdoor courtyard that had become a sparring zone. Off to one side, Un'hee and Ar'alani sat reading under a wide brimmed umbrella that blocked the glare from the sun. In the center of the courtyard, Thrawn was running a clinic, putting his stray Jedi through the paces. Show off, Thrass thought.
"Syndic," Ar'alani acknowledged, not looking up from her work. Un'hee finished the page of her book and turned in her chair to give the elder Mitth brother a smile and wave.
"Good day," He greeted them both. "Have either of you seen our dear friend Captain Ivant?"
Ar'alani inclined her head. "Perhaps he is catching up on sleep. Humans do need more of that, and he did recently work himself silly on a project."
"You military types really are no fun," Thrass pointed out. "I simply wished to thank him for giving my kitchen staff half the night off."
"This does not concern me," Ar'alani said dismissively, returning to her datapad and reviewing whatever information was displayed upon it.
Thrass sighed. "Of course. Well, if you see him, do let me know. I love waking up to my staff gossiping about my brother and his clandestine affairs."
"I see," Ar'alani murmured to herself. "That explains why he's in a good mood."
"Which one?" Thrass groused.
"Thrawn, obviously." Across the way, Ezra grunted, trying to redirect one of Thrawn's advances with minimal success. Thrawn turned it into a teaching moment, and they began again.
"He seems… lighter, today," Un'hee agreed softly. The young navigator flinched, and Ar'alani braced herself. Sure enough, a moment later, Ezra and his practice weapon went flying with a strangled grunt.
"Well," Thrass said, tone brightening as if he remembered his audience, "I suppose that is at least something beneficial in all of this. If you see Ivant, please remind him that my staff is not to be won over or dismissed without my express permission, even at all hours of the night when he feels prone to revisit his love of cooking."
"Is - But Thrawn is a member of your house," Un'hee thought aloud, face furrowing in concentration as she considered the point she wanted to make. "He could dismiss staff if he wanted to, right?"
They studied each other a moment, then Thrass laughed, eyes gleaming. "You are too smart for your own good, Navigator." Thrawn's elder brother checked to make sure he had not drawn his younger sibling's attention with the sharpness of his laugh. "Let’s keep that our little secret, shall we?" He added, conspiratorially.
Un'hee grinned and Thrass patted her once, twice on the crown of her head. Meanwhile, his gaze found the subtle upturn of Ar'alani's lips.
Softly, almost as though under her breath, she released the truth."I believe Ivant and Vah'nya had something to handle this morning," She informed him. "They will be joining us later."
"So he is not sleeping the day away after staying up all night chatting with my brother?" Thrass sounded put out. "It would have been far more enjoyable to tease him had that been the case."
Ar'alani made a show of pulling up a new report and ignoring him, to the delight of Un'hee and her bright, youthful giggles.

If you played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you know that one of the game’s vital features is cooking. The possibilities felt endless; you can cook many combinations of food and get a seemingly endless number of results.
Have you ever wanted to taste some of the cooked food you cooked in Breath of the Wild? The Legend’s Cookbook is the gateway to those fantasies. The Legend’s Cookbook is a Legend of Zelda inspired cookbook featuring recreations of the amazing dishes from games we enjoy so much.
We sat down with three of the team members behind The Legend’s Cookbook, and they shared their thoughts about the cookbook and what readers (and eaters!) can look forward to.
Zelda Universe: What made you decide to create a Legend of Zelda inspired cookbook?
Peter Abreu, Lead Chef: There were a lot of factors that went into us wanting to do this. People are spending more money eating out than cooking at home, and we can start to change that trend. We figure if we make cooking something fun, uncomplicated and interesting, we can really change people’s lives.
We love the Zelda series, we’re huge fans. We are in love with the stories, characters and art style. Do you know what is at the very core of that series? Being a hero and saving the world. All of us on the team want to do something like that. The absolute goal here is that one of the recipes in this book becomes a staple in someone’s diet, that it changes the way they go about their dietary lifestyle and their life improves from that change. If we manage to do that, then we’ve done it.
We want everyone to cook like a hero, what better place to draw inspiration from than a series that brought that concept so near and dear to our hearts?
Matt Mannheimer, Producer: It’s one of those things where you play something and you’re like “what if that was real?” That was some of our mindsets when wanting to make some of these inspired recipes from the games. From there we poured our heart into it. With our passion for gaming and the [Zelda] series in general, it made us do our research and figure out what will be the perfect fit for these recipes.
ZU: What types of recipes and foods from the Zelda series are you taking inspiration from?
Peter: The recipes in this cookbook are original, real world recipes inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We have baked goods, breakfast foods, dinner items, healthy snacks, sweet desserts and so much more! We’re starting with 50 recipes and we want to add even more as stretch goals. For those stretch goals, we are going to add things like cocktails, more creative dishes, and even recipes inspired by the other games in the Zelda series.
Matt: This whole cookbook is from the perspective of the hero. The hero recollecting his time from his adventure, writing down these recipes, fighting monsters, going through dungeons. You know the whole drill! That’s what makes it special; it’s a cookbook that has a story behind it. Not just in the gaming world, but also in real life. If you have enjoyed Mother’s Cookbook or Batter’s Almanac, you’re probably going to enjoy this one.
ZU: Will this cookbook be enjoyed by those who may not know the Zelda franchise?
Peter: Absolutely, we like to keep cooking simple and accessible. This is not going to be a cookbook only for Zelda fans. This cookbook is not going to bash people over the head with references and in-jokes but there will be several subtle allusions and (literal) Easter eggs. We want this to be a guide for everyone, newcomers and veterans to the kitchen and the Zelda series.
The ultimate compliment is for someone to fall in love with the recipes, art, and photos in our cookbook, first, and then realize it draws a lot of inspiration from their favorite series, second.
Matt: You don’t have to know everything about the [Zelda] series to get into this book. I feel its for everyone. I definitely don’t know everything about the [Zelda] series, but whenever I look at these recipes, and the pictures, I’m drawn into it. There are recipes that range from easy to difficult, but they’re so much fun to make. They’re fun to make and are all delicious.
Patrick Deasy, Photographer: I’m probably the biggest normie of the bunch, I’m not much of a gamer. I’ve been able to try out these recipes and I can tell you from an outsiders perspective that this is definitely a cookbook first and a piece of nerd memorabilia later.
ZU: If you had to recommend a recipe to somebody who may be new to cooking, what would it be?
Peter: The rock-hard candy. Our rock candy recipe is simple and delicious. You can do it at home, it’s super easy and very enjoyable. This is for all those with a sweet tooth. Here, I’ll share it with you:
Rock Hard Candy
Ingredients:
2 Cups of White Sugar
1 Cup of Water
3/4 Cup of Light Corn Syrup
1/4 Cup of Pomegranate Juice
Powdered Sugar for Dusting
Directions:
In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and corn syrup.
Heat up the pan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the white sugar is dissolved completely with the water and corn syrup. It is important to stir gently after sugar has dissolved to prevent burning, Use a candy thermometer to watch the temperature of the mixture and let it hit to the hard crack stage of 300F (149C).
Once there, remove from it from heat and add in the pomegranate juice, slowly. Mix it in.
Then, pour the hot candy into a 9”x9” baking pan covered in parchment paper that’s been dusted with powdered sugar, so the candy doesn’t stick. Leave it out in the open air uncovered and let the candy harden and cool completely.
Then the fun part, break into chunks with a hammer and then enjoy.
Matt: The Legends Cookbook is here to give you a culinary adventure: just go for it. If there’s a recipe you really wanna make, just do it. Even if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it the first time, just keep trying. With these recipes, we just want you to become a better chef.
ZU: Which recipe from this cookbook are you most excited about?
In The Legend’s Cookbook, the Dubious Food tastes really good; a lot more than you would expect. It’s even pixilated, like in Breath of the Wild!
Peter: The recipe I am most excited for is the one inspired by Dubious Food. It was the very first item I wanted to try and make in the kitchen. It was something just so disgusting yet edible, it was a fun idea and I wanted to make it. It was hard but I really enjoyed all different ways to make the food turn purple and look gross yet taste amazing. The final product just came out so great and it tasted delicious.
I pulled heavily from learning how to cook coq au vin from Anthony Bourdain and his show Parts Unknown. He was a was a huge inspiration for me as a chef. I really resonated with him because, like him, I spent a lot of my traveling the world, learning different cultures and food. I wanted to bring that same spirit of travel and exploration, a concept also very core to the Zelda series, to this cookbook as well as honor him with one of my favorite dishes he made. Hours upon hours in the kitchen later, I’ve created a questionable but inviting twist on coq au vin that you will all enjoy.
Matt: The meaty rice balls. I couldn’t stop eating them! They were so good! I don’t know how Peter does it, but that meat was the most delicious thing I ever tasted. It’s sweet, it’s GOOD.
Patrick: This is pretty basic, but I was pretty amazed when I got to see Peter make the fried rice for a couple of the dishes. I’ve never been able to do it right, so knowing that it’s in the cookbook is pretty exciting for me. Also the Rock Hard Food is pretty rad. It’s like a hard candy that’s flavored with pomegranate juice and it’s great. Meaty Rice balls are fantastic. It’s spicy and sweet and wonderful. I almost forgot about the Dubious Food, that one is awesome. That one is definitely my favorite.

ZU: How will this cookbook stand out from other video game inspired cookbooks?
Peter: Our cookbook stands out from other cookbooks because it has a unique style and page layout. Have you opened a modern cookbook recently? Go to your local Target and find your way to the book section and look for their book section. Find a cookbook on the shelf and pick it up, look at it. You see beautiful food and a recipe. That’s usually it.
Our cookbook stands out because from the very inception, we are designing it like a field guide. In the margins are little watercolor drawings of stunning vistas, charcoal studies of various herbs and plants, little notes tucked in here or there. Our cookbook is rough around the edges and that’s the point, we want it to feel like you’ve found something personal and real when you pick it up. We want you to bust out your own pen and inks and add to it, there’s space! This may be our cookbook but we want you to make it your cookbook.
Matt: This project consists of a group of best friends; we’re all working on this together; we’re on the same wavelength. But were also big fans of the [Zelda] series and gaming in general. Were putting time into each and every recipe. I know Peter has done countless hours of research on every single recipe.
Everyone on our team is professional; we have several animation students. We have someone who worked on the Archer (the TV show), we have someone who worked from SEGA, that’s me! This team has come from different sides of the gaming, animation and art community. I feel like our relationships show from this cookbook.
Patrick: The thing that really separates this cookbook, I know I’ve been saying this a lot, but most video game cookbook’s I’ve seen have been very novelty, and most of them are just decoration guides for baked goods. This is not just a novelty decoration guide, we are not internet celebrities, we are a bunch of people who just really care about cooking.
ZU: A Kickstarter for this cookbook is coming up (May 2019); why should people support and back this project?
Peter: We hope, we really do hope, that people support our project. This is going to be something you’ll want to show other people and it is going to inspire you to cook for them as well. If you like cooking, if you like games or you want to just have a real piece of art to hang out on your bookshelf, this is for you.
Matt: The Kickstarter were hoping to have that up in May. We’re working really hard on this, we’re trying to make recipes that everyone can enjoy; a culinary adventure. This is one of my favorite projects I got to work on my entire life. The food is SO good. I’m serious about those meaty rice balls! I feel like with the team, partnering with TheYetee and the recipes, this will make for an amazing product.
We’re also working with The Yetee on this project! They will help with distribution, fulfillment, back rewards. I think partnering with TheYetee was amazing, and you’re gonna see a lot of stuff in the future that we’re excited to show off.
Patrick: If you wanted to know what the foods tasted like in Breath of the Wild, this is pretty much the closest you’re gonna get.
ZU: Anything else you want to share about the Zelda cookbook project?
Peter: We have so much more to tell but we want to save a few secrets. I’ll tell you what is no secret, we’ve partnered with The Yetee to help fulfill backer rewards and also produce a few of them. They are an amazing company and we are so happy to work with them. They’re gonna be a big help.
Here’s something that is a secret, but I’ll share it with you. We have a discord server that people can join and hang out in. People are invited to join, cook with us, and go on a culinary adventure! Here’s the invite: discord.gg/wGznSn9. It’s a secret, tell everyone.
Matt: We’re opening our public discord right now! If you wanna chat with the team, look at behind the scenes content, talk about the cookbook, join up in our server! We’ll also have a Twitter and Instagram open to check out. We really wanna hear from everyone.
Patrick: We’re trustworthy dudes and definitely Not A Scam ™ :^) Our discord is neat :^)
Thanks to Peter, Matt, and Patrick for taking time out of their schedule for the interview. We hope you’re looking forward to their upcoming cookbook project. A Kickstarter for The Legend’s Cookbook is launching mid-May; we will continue to share new details as they are announced. We will update with a link to the Kickstarter campaign after it begins.
If you’d like to communicate with the people behind the cookbook project, you can follow them on Twitter or join their Discord server. The team is always looking to engage with patrons, food lovers and Zelda fans alike.
Cook like a Hero: An interview with the team behind The Legend’s Cookbook If you played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you know that one of the game’s vital features is cooking.

I edit Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (and right the spicy bits) and I have a seeecret
Fool-Errant/NoCapes stalks this blog now but is too shy to say ‘hi’.
how dare the two of you make me seem like a cool person because you will not believe how long i have idolized their writing ever since i discovered it about a year ago, one crisp spring night in the depths of AO3, and ever since, i was hooked. I have gone many a sleepless night thinking about engie and spy. I have drawn scenes but scrapped them bc i didnt think the art was good enough to post (I don’t have them anymore, they’re traditional and lost to the depths of my sketchbook hoard). And honestly?
have i also mentioned how they are one of the two people directly responsible for getting me into this ship and starting this blog (the other person is my good pal who i rp with, they’re the one who convinced me of the platonic chemistry, fool-errant is the one who convinced me fully of the romantic chemistry)
have i also mentioned that i??? also really like the way you write too?? One day I wish to write spicy scenes as good as you but right now??? this boy is too cowardly to even write the word. you know. The Word. Well a lot of words but you get what I mean
have i also mentioned that one day I wish to be half as good at characterizing different character voices through effective use of localized vocabulary and diction to establish different tones and perspectives and how Spy and Engie could describe the exact same person using completely different language but still somehow capture that exact person in our eyes and how the person is, in reality, a combination of the different traits that Spy and Engie see them as (i’m talking about Evie) and that neither of them see her for who she truly is anD IM STILL WAITING TO MEET HER OFFICIALLY
have i also mentioned how i wish my engie interpretation was as on point as theirs
i have mentioned how many times i’ve reread the football scene but have i mentioned how many times i’ve reread the part where RED team got put in jail? And how the disguises spy takes on are so fully contained that I think?? one of the one shots genuinely fooled a user (yes I sometimes stalk the comments, don’t @ me, i sometimes get too in-character and start doing spy things irl), like full on fucking kudos, it’s genuinely hard to fool a reader in a fic from a third person limited perspective of a character, but what gave it away was the very very subtle use of specific words and grammatical choices that differentiated the character from the character that the character is disguised as and look. I am. Emotional. About. Smoke Eyes. I took AP English lit, I got a fucking five on that test, I can give you an entire five paragraph essay completely analyzing the extremely effective use of word choice and grammar to establish perspective, voice, and character and how the changes in word choice and grammar clearly and smoothly illustrate the development of these characters.
look basically i have so many good things to say about smoke eyes and fool-errant and i can talk for a really long time about how many times its made me laugh or put my phone down and put my face into my blankets to stop from yelling too loudly bc my inner fanboy started dying
I’m known to ramble so to summarize:

THE BEST OF MILLIGAN & MCCARTHY By Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy o-o-o-c
Madness. Sheer and utter madness.
I must admit that before MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, I hadn't even heard of Brendan McCarthy, which is a damn inexcusable shame. But to be fair, the work of Milligan & McCarthy hasn’t really been part of the dialogue in comix culture. Not even when it comes to talking about the impactful indie work that fell outside of the mainstream; you never hear their work cited alongside that of Frank Miller's SIN CITY (which, before the 2005 film release was only really known in pretty small circles throughout the 1990's) or Eddie Campbell's ALEC or Dave Sim's CEREBUS. But that silence is in no way reflective of the duo's influence.
About a year ago, I listened to an interview with Neil Gaiman for the British Library podcast focused primarily on the RAMAYANA and Gaiman's involvement in adapting it for DreamWorks. When asked if he had a particular style in mind when working on the various [never-produced] treatments, Gaiman was quick to point out Brendan McCarthy's work on ROGAN GOSH, which Gaiman describes as being birthed from Brendan's "Road to Damascus moment, where he ran into a pile of comics in India, and just went 'I love this, there's art stuff here that I've never seen in the West,' and started doing stuff and playing with it." He also goes on to describe ROGAN GOSH as "one of the most interesting moments of fusion between Indian and British and American comix culture."
Naturally, I immediately looked into getting my hands on some ROGAN GOSH and discovered that it was reprinted in the pages of an over-sized hardcover titled THE BEST OF MILLIGAN & MCCARTHY published by Dark Horse Books in 2013 and retailing for only $24.99 (down to $7.19 as I type this). Although a horrendously produced edition (pages are actually falling out in less than a year since purchasing it), I'm still happy to have gotten my hands on it because it has been blowing my mind ever since. Not least because of the work itself, but because it simultaneously exposes a very vital almost secret history of comix lost to... I dunno,an obsession with the founding of Image Comics and the less than negligible work its founders produced? If there was ever a demented, revolutionary punk rock duo in comix, Milligan & McCarthy definitely fit the bill.
ROGAN GOSH first appeared in REVOLVER, a short-lived anthology magazine for mature readers published in the UK between 1990-1991. GOSH was finally collected by DC Comics/Vertigo into a 48-page one shot in 1994. It is perhaps because of the book's modest page-count that it is never mentioned in the same breath as say THE SANDMAN or PREACHER, or THE INVISIBLES or other long-running titles central to the Vertigo imprint's identity. But hey, Aristotle's POETICS is no more than a sodding 44 pages, which is sometimes all you need to jump-start a revolution.
In Milligan and McCarthy's own words, surrounded by "long and bloated 'concept album' comics", they were more interested in "the short, sharp, throwaway pop single. The type you danced to. The type you had sex to."
While the above statement can most be applied to their series PARADAX (also featured in the book), it pretty much hits the nail on the head with the majority of their collaborations, including ROGAN GOSH.
By the duo's own admission, it is not only difficult to describe what ROGAN GOSH is about, it is even pointless to ask. What may have been originally conceived as a “sci-fi Bollywood BLADE RUNNER” rapidly evolved into something far more demented. It starts off with Rudyard Kipling in Lahore en route to a place "where men of all castes come to sleep the sleep of dreams." Essentially, an opium den where "karmanauts can relieve a man of the curses of his sins.” If you think that opening scene will give you any idea of what follows, you are sorely mistaken. Kupling is entered into a "jasmine-scented dream of the future" where we are transported to psychadelic trip after psychadelic trip involving completely different characters:
- A man named Raju Dhawan waiting on another named Dean Cripps at a Tandoori joint called "Star of the East" - The blue-skinned Rogan Gosh on the run from the "bloody-tongued, dark destroyer" Kali together with a small idol of Kipling. - Raju Ghawan as Rogan Gosh together with Dean Cripps on the run from robotic hindu "Karma Kops". - Rogan Gosh as a bull-riding ancient Egyptian cowboy of the future, roaming through the mythic land of Wild Bill Osiris and Horus Thuh Kid.
If none of this makes the slightest bit of coherence, well that's because there is nothing coherent about it. Rather than there being any kind of train of thought, it's more like a train blown to bits upon the detonation of atomic dynamite. Shards of ideas floating around a nebula, jabbing into each other with every turn of the page. It's bizarre stuff, heavy on logic-defying captions almost as much as the explosive visuals. If you, the reader, let yourself go, you'll find that the synergy of text and image in ROGAN GOSH will drag you around a strong relentless current of spicy thought soup. Washing ashore an island of utter confusion is inevitable, but not without a sense of thrill retained from the memories of the surrealist storm that was.
Imagine a comicbook operating along the logic of say, PROMETHEA, 8 years prior to PROMETHEA's publication and without any of the rigorous explanation of the world's mechanics the way PROMETHEA delves into. Instead you're just thrown into it and left to make connections entirely on your own. That's what ROGAN GOSH feels like; a weird transcendental spell cast in comicbook form.
It isn't a coincidence that Milligan & McCarthy share something with Alan Moore other than British citizenship. All three after all did get their start making comix in the indie music paper SOUNDS. Moore with ROSCOE MOSCOW in 1979, and McCarthy et Milligan with THE ELECTRIC HOAX in 1978. This discovery, although new to me, was not at all surprising, as I find that I am typically drawn to creators who cut their teeth in avenues that fall outside of "the mainstream". Where the ones "in charge" understand little about what they’re doing, where anything goes and opportunities for mad experimentalism aren't stifled.
The greatest discovery in THE BEST OF MILLIGAN & MCCARTHY for me has been the duo's work on FREAKWAVE, a comic that, by Brendan's own admission, was directly inspired by MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR which Brendan became obsessed with during his surfing getaway in Australia in 1981. After which Brendan coerced Milligan to co-write a "Mad Max goes surfing" treatment Brendan could pitch to Hollywood. Hollywood didn't bite, but the duo did get to produce it as a backup strip in the pages of VANGUARD ILLUSTRATED published by Pacific Comics in 1983. Pretty straight adventure story initially (well, as straight as Milligan & McCarthy can muster anyway), with the most striking aspect of the strip being character designs and world building.
FREAKWAVE is a post-apocalyptic punk-rock drifter who windsurfs a flooded Earth in search of floating trash he can live off. He battles it out with disease-ridden humanoid "Water-rats" and psychopaths in gasmasks wrapped in old tin cans and the random cultural ephemera of old. FREAKWAVE would later resurface as a punk-absurdist Tibetan Book-of-the-Dead story in 1984's STRANGE DAYS, an anthology showcasing the work of Milligan, McCarthy, and Brett Ewans published by Eclipse Comics. It only ran for 3 issues, but Warren Ellis says it "landed like a hand grenade from another world", which is still exactly what it feels like going through its contents 34 years later today. It is especially in the pages of STRANGE DAYS' feature comic FREAKWAVE that you see Brendan McCarthy and Peter Milligan really rocking out like some kind of alternative comicbook band, the pages crackling with the energetic buzz of an electric guitar. Brendan especially reaches peak McCarthiasm, with 90% of his visionary work on FURY ROAD appearing here first on the page a good 31 years before blowing people's minds on  screen.
Which, by the way, how fucking cool is that? To be asked to work on the sequel to a film that inspired your scarcely read comicbook. And to be asked specifically because of your work on said comicbook?
Not to mention that FREAKWAVE, although given a pass by executives in Hollywood, very likely influenced the movie WATERWORLD in 1995, at the very least in terms of look and production design, which let's face it was the only really good thing about the film.
Nothing will give you that good kick in the balls to go off and make comix (or any ill-advised pursuit) more than looking at the work of Milligan and McCarthy. If a big part of the draw of comix for you is that it is medium void of filters between creator and reader, well then that cannot be more true of Milligan and McCarthy's collaborations. Because there are always editors keeping creators in check, or heck, even self-inflicted inhibition on the creator’s part. Not for Milligan and McCarthy.
Never for Milligan and McCarthy.

Metamorph - Chapter One (Part Two)
“Perhaps,” Bruce agreed quietly, mostly to just roll the word around on his tongue for the sake of doing something. He felt terribly estranged. He’d never felt this way about anything before. “Are you coming?”
Alfred smiled the ghost of a smile at him, a smile that assured him that, eventually, they’d be okay. “Eventually,” he promised.
That was all the assurance he needed. With a polite smile, Bruce turned and walked out the door.
***
Bruce spent a good hour greeting guests, offering them champagne more expensive than their month’s rent and offering around a few courteous dances. Of course, he was also asked, mostly by young women, and, graciously, he accepted every time. No sooner had he started to dance with a brunette was he dancing with a petite blonde girl with drawn-on eyebrows, emphasised black lips and a skimpy Gothic dress paired with clunky leather boots. He wouldn’t look at her, and not because he was being discriminative against her sense of dress. She was young, maybe too young to have alcohol on her breath, and she was getting very strange with her hands.
“Excuse me? Please can I cut in?”
Bruce turned to look at the man who’d spoken in surprise. He was tall, though no taller than Bruce: probably six foot or so. He had tawny skin and dark brown hair and was wearing an unstylish brown suit that looked cheap and worn past its youth. “Yes, of course,” he said politely, but the man wasn’t looking at him; he was looking at the woman.
“I was talking to you, sweetheart.”
The woman looked both confused and harassed. Her cheeks flamed up with colour under her pasty makeup. “I beg your pardon?”
“Oh, baby, please. If you were begging, you’d be on your knees.” The man took one of Bruce’s hands, assuming a dancer’s stance, and a dominant one at that. Bruce was too surprised to reject the casual contact. “Hello, darling,” he greeted quietly, steering him away from the woman who stared after them in amazed puzzlement. “Have you been having fun?”
Speechless, Bruce stared at him. There was something familiar yet unfamiliar about his voice, his long jawline, his wild eyebrows, even his hands, one folded firmly around his. There were scars randomly speckling his spidery fingers, Bruce observed despite himself, that were very similar to his own. Under the spicy, cheap smell of aftershave, Bruce could detect a hint of smoke and cinnamon.
“The champagne is absolutely phenomenal,” the man continued, undeterred by his silence. People were starting to stop dancing in favour of staring, and Bruce felt a very distant and very quickly receding sliver of alarm scorching the lining of his stomach. He wondered what people would say about the fact he was dancing intimately with another man, but, in a more forward part of his mind, he wondered what was so familiar about the delicate arch of the man’s throat, peeking out from a pink collar. There was a splotch of either blood or wine on the fraying rim of it. “You must simply introduce me to your dealer, darling. The taste reminds me of Paris, you see, and the pastel azure of the sky in the afternoon-”
“John?”
The man’s eyes glittered in his browned face like poisonous water. Pretence of normalcy forgotten, he leaned closer like a secret. His breath smelt sour, so different from John’s own. “Guess again,” he murmured, his voice as silky as satin and wrapping Bruce as delicately as so. “Better than John,” he hinted assuredly.
It clicked. This wasn’t John, no; he believed that. Standing in front of him was the very man that he had lost in the rain, the one that had sported his face in Arkham Asylum; the man that had tried to manipulate himself into John’s darkest desires that had been cleverly hidden with the help of medication and Dr Leland. Bruce could almost feel rage and disgust as a live thing inside him as he stared at the creature now donning his best friend’s face. Everything else fell away into a camera-lens blur, the man coming into a sharper, more detailed focus, and he forgot how to function, how to breathe, shutting down completely. He’d imagined plenty of things he would do when finally getting his hands on this man, and now the time had come he didn’t know which or what to do. Nothing violent – Bruce Wayne shouldn’t have a violent part of him, he reminded himself sternly.
Don’t make a scene. You are Bruce Wayne, a stupid, weak businessman. You cannot make a scene.
Bruce tightened his hand around his, stilling. The man’s brown suit seemed so strange on John’s skin, so bleached of colour, so harsh against a backdrop of chalk-white, and Bruce tried not to think about how he might have acquired the outfit. It didn’t help the burning sensation in his midriff. “You,” he spat.
The man – the creature – tutted at him disapprovingly. He was using John’s voice in a way John never used it, with silky, cloy, cocky smoothness and something akin to careful seduction. “Such impolite savagery,” he taunted. “I thought you would be pleased to see me. I’m hurt. Weren’t you scouring for me day and night as though hopelessly in love with me like in Cinderella, Bruce Wayne?” He said his name like it was fine, powdered poison, through a straight set of teeth – John’s teeth. “Well, here I am. Your own beautiful nightmare in the flesh. Your own devilish Cinderella.”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Bruce forced out through his teeth. The urge to haul him outside by the flesh pouching the back of his neck, like a kitten, was so powerful his hands shook. Instead, he focused on dancing again; them standing motionlessly in the centre of a gaggle of dancers was earning a few stares, or maybe that was a matter of their gender. “Assuming another man’s face during conversation... Are you really that cowardly?” he sneered now, wanting to destroy this man in the only way he could. Personal. This was still personal. And now he was wearing John’s face...
The man’s hand tightened around his with surprising strength. Bruce’s skin thrummed with pain. He hid his grimace expertly. “Don’t assume,” the man said, slowly, softly, “to understand, Mr. Wayne.” He flattered him with a brilliant smile, the anger dissipating from his eyes like tepid water from a pierced water bottle, just like that. “Aren’t you going to ask me?”
“What?”
“The obvious questions!” the creature rejoined cheerfully. “‘Who are you?’, ‘What do you want?’, ‘Where are you hiding?’, ‘What are you?’, ‘How did you get here?’”
Feeling like he was being made a mockery, Bruce snapped, “Would you tell me?” without hope, more to prove a point than anything else.
“Well, no,” the creature admitted with the same assured cheer woven around his voice, and Bruce gave him a pointed look, “but what’s a vocal first meeting between villain and hero without unanswered questions? I need to be a mystery.”
“Get to the point.”
Now it was the creature’s turn to blink. “What?”
“Don’t tell me you came here to dance with me and indulge in my champagne.”
An equal mixture of amusement and bitterness etched the creature’s face. “Oh, very well,” he sighed lightly. “Though dancing with Gotham’s most eligible bachelor was a pleasant bonus, and the champagne really was marvellous.”
Bruce stared. He wondered if this man was human, or had been human once, with extraordinary circumstances; he also wondered if this was a creature born to both the art of shape-shifting and manipulation, which barely seemed possible. He could process giant men and purple-skinned men in tubes, because, really, that was just science. He couldn’t blame shape-shifting on science, though, which was all he knew. He felt suddenly very tired.
“Oh, relax.” With a slender thumb, the man traced his eyebrow softly, which was apparently warped in distress. “Soon, I’ll be out of your hair, and then you can go back to melting zippers and panties for miles over glasses of flowery champagne.”
Incredulously, Bruce said, “I can’t just let you leave.”
“You’re going to have to, I’m afraid.” The creature’s eyes flashed. “Do you like puzzles?”
Bruce paused. “What?”
“Puzzles. Do you like them?” He didn’t wait for a response, tripping over his own words in his haste to get them out. “Because our time together, sweetheart, will be a puzzle, and an arcane one at that: no picture on the front of the box, no single idea what the finished product will look like, the finale at the end. The puzzle of my life, in fact – the puzzle that shows how deeply you wronged me, divided in sections that once broke my heart. Can you handle that?”
“And if I refuse to... to play?” Bruce muttered through numb lips.
The man pressed his mouth against Bruce’s ear, and Bruce had the savage, alarming thought that this was what it would feel like to have John so close, and hot blood seared him from his ears to his cheekbones to his throat. His hands shook violently now. They’d always been as steady as a heartbeat. “Then I can’t promise you the next time you see Tiffany, Alfred or John, even Selina Kyle, they’ll have a heartbeat.” He leaned back calmly, like he hadn’t just threatened Bruce’s entire family, and stuck out his hand. “So – do you assent to play with me?”
Then he smiled, and Bruce thought it was what a spider’s smile would look like every time another naive insect fell tangled into their intricate web. He was the insect, thrashing against the sticky silk listlessly, and, somehow, in such an abrupt space of time, the man was the spider, staring at him devilishly from his position of his superiority. Bruce was, in fact, so deeply tangled he didn’t know where the exit was. He knew one thing: the man wasn’t bluffing. If he didn’t build the puzzle, play the game, everyone he loved would turn up dead.
The man’s hand was clammy and soft with makeup.
“So, the game begins,” he purred, and then he disappeared, leaving Bruce alone with a memory card in his curled fist.
***
His vision was starting to blur, words dancing onscreen like they were alive. He’d plugged the memory card given to him by the strange man into the computer in the cave a few hours ago, but so far he’d run into countless errors and no idea of how to crack them. Nothing he did seemed to wheedle the contents of the card out. In red block letters, ‘ERROR’ striped over the screen again, flashing in a way that drove pain behind his eyes, and he had to turn away.
Alfred was approaching him, a tray of tea balanced precariously in his wizened hands. “Tea, sir?”
Bruce almost smiled. Alfred insisted most things could be made better with tea. With a sharp pierce of longing, Bruce thought how he desired that to be true at the moment. “Thank you, Alfred.” He heard the weariness in his voice as he reached out for the tea and took a grateful sip. It had the rich essence of alcohol. Then he really did smile. “I needed this.”
“Have you made any progress yet, Master Bruce?” Alfred asked, obviously trying his best to push aside his conviction against Batman for Bruce’s sake. Bruce seriously could have cried; he was so tired.
“No. The Computer keeps saying ‘error’, again and again, like clockwork. I haven’t figured out a way to get past it.”
“Perhaps,” said Alfred, “it would be best to just buy the camera it belonged to.”
Bruce blinked at him in surprise. “Do you think that’s all I can do?”
“It would be the most simple way to get around the problem, Master Bruce,” Alfred confirmed, putting the tray down. On it was also a plate of homemade cookies, fluffy and moistened by melted chocolate chips. Bruce’s childhood favourite. The cold stone in his gut thawed. “Are you sure doing what this man says is a good idea, Bruce? You don’t know the first thing about him.”
Bruce sighed and turned back to the computer. He’d been asking himself that since the gala, but he knew he couldn’t run the risk of casualties, not innocent ones, not loved ones. “You know I have no choice, Alfred,” he said. “He said this puzzle will teach me about him and – and how I wronged him.”
“Maybe it was something your father did,” suggested Alfred, sounding resigned. “Many hold grudges against you for that.”
“Maybe,” agreed Bruce, his heart not in it. “I’ll ask Tiffany to try crack this while I go to the closest electronic shop and try buy a camera that matches the card.”

January 2020
Waking up in a new decade with David Bowie watching over me.
Well, we slept in a Bowie-themed hotel room. Still, good omens, eh? Snuggling with Andre, going wild on the hotel breakfast. Walking down to the city in the sunshine. Climbing up to the castle grounds. Sitting by the river, his head in my lap. I loved everything about it. The sun, the water, playing with his hair.
Watching the entire first season of Spinning Out in one go (Bipolar disorder AND figure skating? Yes please!) Ordering in surprisingly good vegan pizza (for future reference: Tony's Pizza Catania).
Making delicious sour and spicy coconut soup. And my first sourdough bread. And vegan blood orange raspberry cake. I'm seriously considering a career change. I would love to spend all day in a kitchen, preparing food in peace and quiet.
Robin Sloan's novel Sourdough. It's about baking, human connection, foreign scripts and cultures, etymology, escaping the life that doesn't make you happy. I liked it a lot. The author even invented an entirely new language / type of music for the Mazg, a fictional maritime nation from somewhere around eastern Europe. A short passage I liked (Louis is presenting her bread in the Ferry Building): Seven judges sat in a line at a long table, our women and three men, swaddled and comfortable, wrapped in scarves and caftans. Plain fabris, generous cuts. They had different-colored skin and different-colored hair, but they shared a satisfied plumpness. It looked like a committee of harvest gods drawn from all the pantheons. All except one, seated at the end of the table, who seemed less Demeter or Dionysus, more Hades. Her hair was shiny and slicked back; she wore a slouchy black leather jacket over a shimmering black T-shirt. Maybe she was the token goddess of death, and also of street fashion. Welcome, the gods murmured together. What do you have for us today?
Andre making pancakes for me. Flipping them in the pan with one hand. Perfect party trick.
Dreaming more often. About a dog losing its forelegs. About a surgeon hitting on me after telling me I had a tumor. An adventure story featuring picking locks, drugs, spiders, sailing and pirates, foreign countries and weird characters. A cruise through Russia, headed to St. Peterburg. The feeling of a school trip on a boat with bunk beds and all, watching the night sky through the ship's roof. Incredible darkness, sparkle, almost like fireworks.
Meeting Maxim's wife Kristina at an ice hockey match. I really like her. She's a violinist and pianist. And someone who can discuss the concept of art while watching a sports game. Nice.
The very best breakfast option: apple cinnamon porridge with berries, hemp seeds, flax seeds, cacao nibs, some nuts.
A sunny Sunday. Sitting outside café Münchner Freiheit eating beetroot and poppyseed ravioli with Bibi after seeing Ronja Räubertochter at Residenztheater.
Returning to SAUNA for the first time in years. I forgot how much I like that club. It's hot, it's full, it's fun. Tom and I felt like employees because we ended up taking care of everyone's coats.
Kristen Roupenian's short story collection Cat Person. I'm usually not a huge fan of short stories but hers were entertaining, so weird, something completely different.
Learning about the Swede Hilma af Klint, possibly the first person (woman) who created abstract paintings; even before Kandinsky.
One Friday morning I saw a driver's ed car from my home town in front of Villa Stuck. And I could've sworn that it was my old teacher getting into that car even though it was a different company's. I actually dreamt about Mike that night. Taking me to work, watching me drive through a crazy city with Indian cult dances, a festival, a vegan buffet at the education centre; making me compete with another student, a girl from the US? Such a lovely, creative and colourful dream. Also: I think I'm deeply influenced by father figures. It's a thing. My old German teacher. Manu's dad. Now Mike. Huh.
Having friends over. Playing the CAT game!
Talking to Sarah about how teachers ship certain students / think they should be together. Waking up with an idea. Suggesting to do some matchmaking for Valentine's Day.
Kanzi apples. Crisp, sweet, fruity. Delicious.
Meeting Lorena from Argentina. She's my language tandem partner since I just got serious about learning Spanish. I've started using Duolingo again and I got some exercise books, too. El gato bebe la leche!
When I just feel the urge to create something. Which could be a drawing in my sketchbook or getting out of bed to make a yeast dough to be turned into pizza later...
Learning about daisy chains. A daisy chain is a number of computers or pieces of computer equipment or software that are connected to each other in a series. But they totally took this figure of speech from the necklaces everyone used to make from daisies as a child!! I love how something as charming as that describes such a technical concept.
Lena writing me another letter. Her husband is an astro-physicist so she told me how the usually very bright star Betelgeuze just started getting darker and darker which could mean that it'll explode soon and create a supernova! Which is crazy. It will be visible for weeks here on Earth and you need to protect your eyes because the brightness would hurt your eyes.
That woman with the supervillain eyebrows I saw on the tram one morning. She just looked evil even though she had her eyes closed and all her face muscles relaxed.
Lorena and me teaching each other dirty words in Spanish/German at the library.
Playing with acrylic paint, creating a marbled effect. Building a castle out of clay.
That dream about an underground river in a fascinating cave system with amazing rock formations and an eerie glow. Walking along a long, narrow pontoon over a big lake in the darkness. Fishing remnants of dead people out of the water (like my grandma's finger). Somehow I consulted my mother and her neighbour Maria about this. So many stars. Both settings reminded me of places I've seen in Mexico. Later there was a bit about time pressure and a bathtub full of blood and paint.
Meeting Luise, Laura's tiny dachshund puppy, for the first time. She kissed me. With tongue. Obviously. At Laura's party I talked to some of her friends and Patrizia's boyfriend. I accidentally got really drunk and went home early.
Sex Education on Netflix. Gillian Anderson just got more attractive with age. How is that even possible? I love her outfits but also how the costume designers dressed Jackson's mums. Great style!
Listening to music with Frank. Making anagrams with Scrabble tiles for each other. Listening to music, slightly high.
A pub quiz Monday with Margit, Dennis, Marina, Steffen and his weird girlfriend. (Semi-)friendly banter and an honorable third place. I just love spending time with these guys.
Anne's facial expressions in the graphic novel version of Anne Frank's Diary.
Cooking lunch together and watching Little Joe at Arena Cinema with Lena.

May I have a matchup please for Sherlock, Harry Potter and vampire knight
I forgot to send matchups here so here’s mine For Sherlock, vampire knight and Harry Potter
I’m a heterosexual female who loves anime, sweet foods, reading, writing and music (especially Melanie Martinez because her songs relate to me). I really do not like Spicy foods, annoying people and school. I’m a secretive and bold person, and I use that information to my advantage. My clothing style is usually punk like and I love piercings and tattoo’s (I have no tattoos yet but I plan on getting them). I love drawing and I skip lessons only when they don’t benefit me (for example if they’re useless and don’t help at all I won’t go). I’m strange, and people tend to think of me as the odd one out, so I believe people don’t understand me. If most people try finding me, I’m usually sat with my mates reading on my phone. I’ve got average grades. I hate physical spots because my chest gets in the way. I’m probably the smartest one out of all my mates. I’m quite small in height and so I prefer a lover with someone taller than me. I’m also good at playing video games - @misskuuderechan
Sherlock - James Moriarty
-Moriarty is a complete Machiavellian and doesn’t care if people die but with you… With you it’s so much different. You are his greatast weakness, though he’s loathe to admit it, but you’re also his greatest strength. As Sherlock said, love is a vicious motivator. He would do absolutely anything - and I mean anything - for you and he’d do it without much thought as to the consequences. It wouldn’t be a healthy relationship at all because of who he is, but I think you might… Soften or round off his edges the more he fell in love with you.
-  Love can easily turn to obsession and soon his world would revolve around you and the web of acitivity and lives that he takes great joy in messing around with. You’re his s/o and that automatically makes you a Big Target to organisations wanting to bring Moriarty to his knees, so his biggest priority aside from causing immense trouble would be to protect you from that life. If you were to live with him, he would barely go there to see you, or you would only be allowed out at set times. What’s even more likely to be an arrangement is you live on your own and he drops in through the window every now and then, surprising you because you thought you were alone/you’ve just walked in and he’s sat there drinking tea and wearing a crown.
-  When he’s away and can’t be with you for safety reasons or whatever else  he tells you - it won’t always make sense but it’s the only explanation you’ll get from him - he listens to Melanie Martinez. More specifically, he listens to the songs that you adore of hers because it’s the best way he can feel that you’re there with him at the time and it also gives him a unique insight into who you are as a person and your thoughts and feelings. He would always gift you with a new anime boxset or manga collection and your favourite sweets as a way to say, “I was thinking of you when I was away.” It’s more calculated than sentimental but it’s as close as he gets to missing someone.
-  Moriarty has always treated people with disdain as he finds them ordinary and boring, and at one point he condescendingly said, aren’t ordinary people adorable?. This way of thinking has one exception and one exception only, and that’s you. You are unashamedly unique and he cherishes the fact that you’re not a sheep and choose to make your own way rather than following the crowd, so to speak. He would admire your art and would spoil you with supplies and taking you to art museums all over the world, if only to inspire you to keep drawing. You skip lessons if you see no benefit and him finding that out earned you a genuine chuckle.
- You’re highly intellectual and Moriarty would come to see you as something of an equal to him; a compliment in its own right because even Sherlock was dismissed as being beneath Moriarty, though this was an admittedly arrogant assumption on his part. He would understand you as he’s highly perceptive, though he may also manipulate you without you knowing it; such is his nature. He’s five foot eight so he’s not as tall as Kaname but he may be taller than you, something that amuses him greatly. Like I said, it wouldn’t be a healthy relationship because of who he is, but you’d certainly soften him, I think.
HP - Sirius Black
- Sirius is, and this pun is fully intended, as loyal as a dog is to the pack. He is loyal through it all, no matter what you do he will still love you and forgive you. Unless you went to Pettigrew proportions but the less said about that, the better... Anyways, he would be just as protective of you as he is the other Marauders and ohmygoodness you’d be his first thought in the morning and his last thought at night. He’d never be able to get you out of his head and it’d drive him batty. If you ever got sad, he’d transform into Padfoot just for you, which means you’d know The Big Illegal Secret, but none of the Marauders mind - you’re a part of their pack, after all.
-  Sirius would be like a koala on a tree. He’s just constantly touching you. If you’re not an affectionate person then he’d show his appreciation and love for you with glances, smiles and notes but he thrives under touch. Sometimes when he’s in dog form, you forget who he is and stroke him and he’s quite happy. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t prefer those quiet moments between you when all the barriers and boundaries of usual social rules are lowered and it’s just two souls seeking company with the other. So, cuddles are definitely a huge part of your relationship, though he tones PDA down quite a bit - or not, depending on your preferences. Sirius has no shame.
- You’re creative and that definitely helps in planning and carrying out pranks. You and Remus are the brains behind the Marauders, though the other three are known for moments of genius, too. Sirius often gets confused as to who’s sweet stash is who’s but he quickly realises that Remus’ has more chocolate than yours does, so he knows that as long as he replaces yours, he can have some from time to time. If not, he’ll just send Peter down to the kitchens and the Common Room has an impromptu party! He enjoys Muggle music so for sure he’d jam out to Melanie Martinez’s music with you and may even strike up a karaoke every now and then, if only to embarrass you.
-  The two of you have a very similar sense of dress and style so tbh you’d end up borrowing each other’s clothes. Before long, no one’s sure if that’s your leather jacket or Sirius’ but in the end it doesn’t really matter because they look and smell the same. The two of you pick out and design tattoos together, as Sirius has a taste and even a slight kink for tattoos. He skips whatever classes you skip and that’s how you end up starting the Detention Dates Trend, wherein couples deliberately skive and get detention just to spend time together.
-  Sirius is estranged and disowned from his family so he knows all about feeling and being misunderstood. You’re both different and stand out from the crowd and that’s partially why you fit in with the Marauders so well; you all know what it is to be different, and it’s for no other reason than being yourselves. Sirius is unusually tender and gentle when you’re down or feeling out of place and he’d sit and cuddle you, murmuring quietly by the fireplace as you talk it out, if you’re that kind of person. If not, humour is his go-to coping mechanism for life so he acts up to try and make you crack a smile, too. Sirius loves you almost as much as he loves himself, and it’s an all-encompassing love.
VK - Kaname Kuran
- You would be his only exception to everything. He would put your needs far above his own and you’d be his only priority beyond those he has as a pureblood vampire. Because you’re human and so young - you’ve been alive for the blink of an eye as far as he, a 10,000 year old vampire, is concerned - he’d be even more protective of you that he would be if you were a vampire and you’d practically be wrapped in bubblewrap, though this would be heavily contradicted by his encouragement for you to be youraelf around him as he has no wish to quench your very being.
- Kaname is cold and detached with the other Night School students but with you, he watches you with a gentle smile and doesn’t chide you for anything that you do unless it severely endanger you. You’re secretive and he lets you have those secrets. He could easily manipulate him into telling you but he chooses not to, knowing that he’d lose your respect as well as the other vampires’. The things that you know from other people and use to your own advantage impresses him and he would want to know how you do it and why you do it.
- He treats you like you’re made of glass. He holds you loosely at first and you have to tell him to hold you tighter and tighter, until you tell him that it’s tight enough and he won’t break you by holding you like this. If you like loose hugs, he’d already know and would make no movement to change his grip on you. Kaname would love the way you dress and not just because it’s the opposite shade of his own uniform and often in the mornings, he gifts you with a small box of chocolates or your favourite sweet treat. On White Day, where the female students give their favours to the Night Class, you would end up with all the favours that he received, though he’d insist on feeding you some, letting his finger linger by your lips for longer than is strictly necessary.
- He is always curious about your art and often asks to look over it. If you said no, he’d probably take a sneak peek later. As it is, he would also gift you with new paper or drawing supplies if he thinks you’re running low or just wants to see you smile. The fact that you only attend lessons that suit you deeply amuses him and he’d ‘catch’ you in the corridors and pull you into an alcove for some sneaky time together, something he admonishes other students for but has no trouble taking the liberty of doing it himself.
-  Kaname was drawn to you because you’re unlike the other students at the school. You’re so unapologetically unique, and rightly so, and you don’t seem to mind the fact that people may misunderstand you. He’s lived for so long and seen and done so much that he would understand and even empathise with you on every level if you ever opened up to him - something he’d greatly encourage. Your intellect and creativity would make him want to give you the world and he has the funds to do it, if he wanted to. He’s also a solid six foot tall so he’d likely tower over you and would prefer to hug you by scooping you up so you can loop your arms around his neck, otherwise he’d get a backache. But again, your needs always come before his own. Kaname would just adore you and you’d be his greatest treasure.

Term has been end, but study need continue... ...
During the period of my postgraduate, I choose the illustration, because I am really interested in it, especially the hand painted watercolor. In my opinion, with the development of the science and technology, computer plays an important role in our daily life. It can also instead of some traditional hand painted. However, hand drawn illustration pictures cannot be replaced completely. To compare with the draw on computer, hand painted illustration shows pure and simple.
Research question
In terms of master of arts, I will research and create a hand drawn illustration book, and the context will be the Chinese Culture & Local Food. The food culture in China has more than one thousand year. In the Qing Dynasty the court invented a special type of cuisine for the royal family, which included many elaborate dishes at one meal. It is called Man Han Quan Xi. Due to the climate and products are different from the place in China, so the food culture consists of eight cuisines, which create different styles of dishes. For instance, in north of China, it is very cold, so the characters of dishes are strong and saline; in east of China, the climate is warm, which caused to the dishes are sweat and saline; in west of China, because of the drippy weather, the dishes use spicy as for the feature. In addition, during the 5,000 year history, there are some places of interest in some cities of China. I will choose some typical cities, and then combine with the food, finally you may see all of this in drawing with some words for introduction. In this painted, you will find Beijing with Imperial Palace, the Great Wall, roast duck and sautéed noodles with minced meat; Suzhou traditional Garden with sweet & sour mandarin fish and wonton soup; Hangzhou West Lake with steamed grass carp in vinegar gravy and beef soup; Shanghai with Town God’s Temple and pan-fried bun stuffed with pork; Xi’an with Terra-Cotta Warriors and oil-splashing noodles, ect.. From above to introduce each city in China, and make a illustration book which is beneficial to all ages. Chinese Food Culture is famous for its color, smelling and ta illustration book ting, so I will use watercolor to show the feature of the food. Furthermore, this illustration book can not only share the Chinese Culture to the people from all over the world, but also can be a guidance of the backpacker.
The reasons for choosing this topic are as follows:
The first is my love of watercolor illustrations, interest is very important point, Choose something you like to make you happy every day, As I think painting can make me very relaxed every day, and I also immersed them, I like the colorful life, I also like to travel and food, when I use watercolor to draw delicious food, will make me feel a great sense of accomplishment. The second is out of the hearts of some miss,Sometimes, miss a taste. More because of the memory of a person in life, a city or miss home, miss some kind of environment, or a period of time can not be forgotten, It carries the unique information, can be described as belonging to everyone’s secret world. Memory mother is a simple, kind, warm, simple people, I  most like to eat braised fish cooked by mt mother as childhood, I call it a happy taste. The Third, I would like to make a picture of the young and old illustrator, not only allows people to enjoy as a painting, but also understand the customs. The last point is that during my study at the university, I also produced a collection of fairy tale illustrations (visible portfolio ) I think it is very successful production, but also get excellent results and course leader and tutor praise. I am interested in the production of illustrations and also understanding it. Now there are many illustrators in the world, I also interested in some of the illustrators who do some research, Such as Japanese illustrators Okabe Keiko, His picture is often written in our familiar scenes, the theme is mostly related to food, fresh and simple, cordial and natural. Gentle tone and brush strokes to draw a touch of moving memories
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the British illustrator Holly Exley, who drew a set of illustrations about the British local breakfast, Rich colors and people looked coveted,After seeing, it seems really can smell the food in the painting exudes a seductive fragrance, I have done some research on his painting method, He is mainly good at watercolor techniques in the dry painting With a layer of coating method in the dry background coloring, Do not seek the effect of osmosis, you can calmly over and over again coloring, easier to grasp.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to the study of the food illustrator, I also studied some good at landscape architecture illustrator, I also like to draw scenes, in college, I made the animation film scenes are basically I use watercolor hand painted,  American female illustrator Lena Akhumova, her works are very memories of the brush strokes, a very good narrative style, she presented the life is particularly beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite illustrator is Helen Beatrix Potter, she created the picture book Peter Rabbit called the originator of the picture book, known as the classic classics, a long time to sell long, but also for my college period played a very far-reaching. Influence, I think the story of good and good works are derived from the essence of life. Like potter, like, love the small animals around the anthropomorphic, with painting to express their own observation and imagination of the surrounding world. The England Lake District is a special source of inspiration for her, and her passion for nature makes her create the famous Peter rabbit series.
