Hey, how are you doing? How was coming back to work?
If I can be curious, let me ask you this super hard (or maybe simple, it depends), question: who's your favorite character and why? Also, which one do you find the most easy to understand/write?
Have a nice day my friend, cheers 😊
@dolceaspidenera hi! I'm so happy to hear from you! ^.^
And ooh, those are good questions. I won't answer them completely, but I will give you honest answers ^.^ I apologize in advance for what turned into a character analysis mini-essay XD
I do have a favorite character of the M6, but I prefer not to write like it on this blog. I think it's awesome when fan creators focus on their favorite characters - it means that everything they make is done out of love! - and it's almost something you'd expect in a dating sim fandom when you have to choose one specific character to experience most of the story with. I initially chose not to do that just because I genuinely enjoy writing for connections with all of the M6, even if there's very few that I would want a specifically romantic connection with. Every single one of them are characters that I'd be happy to get to know, as a lover, or an honorary sibling, or a close friend.
The longer I write like that, the happier I am that I do. It means I've explored aspects of the world of the Arcana that I wouldn't have initially been invested in, but that have contributed so much to the story! It also means that I get to chat with people who have so many different perspectives on the game because of their own preferences, and I've learned a lot from them!
As to who is more or less easy to write - that changes based on the prompt. For example, prompts that reference pre-prologue Vesuvia are a lot harder to write with Portia, simply because she didn't arrive there until after Lucio's "death" and because the game doesn't really delve into the life she's had there since. And the hardest prompts for me to write in general are for MC with specific familiars, only because those are characters I haven't read about XD
There are also themes I wish I could explore more, sometimes, for all the M6, but doing so would require so much speculation that it would be hard to keep the headcanons feeling "canon." Julian's life before Vesuvia, for example - he's been knocking all around the world since his teens, and of the two or so decades that that comprises, he's only spent a few years of that in Vesuvia. He glamorizes his adventures when he talks about them, but nobody in their late teens acts as a medic on a battlefield for their apprenticeship without taking away some kind of baggage. When does he break down without dramatics or smokescreens? When does he learn to talk about a painful past without trying to redirect his hurt into drama? When does he learn the healthy kind of selfishness that lets him be completely honest?
Asra's so emotionally private it's hard to get a read on them sometimes. We know they're deeply in love with MC and that that's been a shaping influence on them for the last nine years - but what else? There's so much about him that aches to be known, which he frequently tells MC in his route, but he still treats his relationship with them like it's fragile and new. What happens when things are more settled and they know MC isn't at constant risk of falling apart? Did they ever feel betrayed by MC for not leaving Vesuvia with them? Did they ever feel resentful of MC for causing that much relational pain, or at the very least, for holding them in a full-time caregiving role for three years? When does he learn to depend on them to the point of exposing them to his own ugly thoughts and feelings?
Nadia, for all of her capacity, is still very emotionally young. She's just beginning to process her feelings regarding her own family, which stem from her childhood and were never addressed directly until they were invited to the Masquerade. She has a deep-seated lack of faith in her own strengths, which MC has had the chance to help her overcome, but that attitude has been affecting her perception of other people's opinions of her for most of her life. At what point does she learn how to interpret someone's concern for her as something other than belittlement? At what point does she learn how to recognize and apologize for her own mistakes in a relationship without experiencing it as self-rejection? At what point does she learn to recognize someone else's strength without comparing it to her own and feeling challenged if she doesn't measure up?
Muriel's especially hard to predict physically. He has a whole host of reasons to feel the way he does about his body in relation to himself and others. It could be easy to say that, as he heals in his relationship with MC, he learns to enjoy and seek out physical pleasure as he overcomes trauma (in multiple ways, like food, and comfort, and intimacy). But when it does come to physical intimacy, Muriel is so easily read as demi/asexual that his interest in that aspect of a relationship doesn't really act as a good benchmark for healing. Maybe his aversion to touch is only trauma-related, and underneath that gruffness is a pent-up, touch-starved lover. Maybe he stays consistently disinterested in that kind of physical pleasure, simply because that's the way he is - and there is nothing wrong with that. But we don't know how that progresses.
So much of Portia's life is missing. We don't know much of what her life was like before she came to Vesuvia after Lucio's "death", and we honestly don't know much of what it was like after. We know that she's friends with all the palace employees and that she has a close connection with Nadia, and that's it. It's hard to know how she fits into a post-canon community because she remains so detached from the other M5 throughout her story. Most of what we know of her life with MC afterwards is that she spends a lot of it on a ship. She's the kind of person who thrives in building and maintaining community, and yet we have so few clues about what that looks like. Does she become like family with the sailors, assuming that the ship keeps the same crew? Does her new status give her a peer-based relationship with Nadia? Does she try to keep Julian in her life, or do they drift apart again? Does she eventually create a new home base in a different country?
And, well, I've already a written a whole character analysis of Lucio. We know that he's determined to become an honest man, but we don't know how that plays out. Does he get tired? Does he find a stopping point at "morally gray"? Does he stick it out and become one of the most emotionally healthy characters? Does he ever settle down somewhere else and build a life there? Does he stay in touch, or reconnect with anyone from Vesuvia and build a new friendship with them?
Anyways, those are some of the rabbit trails I let my brain loose on sometimes, and those are a lot of the character aspects I have a harder time writing for because it's so open-ended. Maybe another creator will read this and have answers I don't yet XD
Thanks for your questions, friend, I hope you don't mind my mini-essay!

so your friendly neighborhood aces heard the arcana fandom is confused by character ages
Well, wonder no more, friends. Your fandom aces have done the math (so much math) and checked our calculations against in-game information so you don't have to!
Approximate ages when the game begins, oldest to youngest:
Nadia: at least 40 (turning 41 in 6 months)
Lucio: at least 39 (turning 40 on the day of the Masquerade)
Julian: ~37 (turning 38 in 2 months)
Muriel: 30 (turning 31 in 8 months)
Portia: 29 (turning 30 in 1 month)
Asra: 26 (turning 27 in 5 months)
Our sources/reasoning for ages:
Nadia is stated to be older than Lucio in her route and the oldest LI by the devs. How much older is somewhat up for debate. We went with 40 a) because it’s a nice round number, and b) it puts her parents’ ages into a more plausible range. Nadia has six older siblings and her mother has been through five pregnancies before Nadia. At minimum, meaning the Empress gets pregnant soon after she gives birth, Nadia is six years younger than Nafizah. A more reasonable minimum is 18 months between births, which would make Nadia nine years younger than Nafizah. Nadia states in her route that she was always treated as the baby of the family, which to us indicates there’s a larger than normal age gap between her and Natiqa. Setting Nadia’s age at 40 puts her parents in their late 60s-early 70s, depending on how old they were when they started having kids. Quite the silver foxes.
Lucio’s age is both more relative and more solid than Nadia’s. We have a pretty good timeline for him. Lucio was 18 when he killed his father and Morga kicked him out of the tribe, as shown in his mini tale. From there, we know he spent some time as a mercenary, making a name for himself, which we’re told in several routes. By the start of the game, Asra’s parents have been missing for about 20 years and we know that Lucio’s reign began around that time. So, really, Lucio’s age comes down to how long you think he was a merc before he stormed Vesuvia and took over. He’s at least 38 if he took the shortest amount of time between leaving the tribe and taking over Vesuvia. We are going with 39 almost 40 to acknowledge the time it takes to travel between the Scourgelands and Vesuvia, stated in Muriel’s route to take weeks of travel, and to give him some wiggle room for battles and name making along the way.
Julian. Oh boy, Julian. Julian’s age is murky and reliant on several other people’s ages and timelines. We know that as a teenager he sought out Nazali to teach him to become a doctor. They were impressed with him and agreed to take him on. While he was still their apprentice, after a very large battle, Julian amputated Lucio’s arm by himself. (We’ve already gushed about this boy’s genius so let’s move on.) Lucio’s arm was amputated before he became Count, as evidenced by him hiring Asra’s parents to make him a replacement. Given the sheer…everything involved with amputating a man’s arm, we can safely say that Julian had been training under Nazali for a few years by that point. Once his apprenticeship ended, Julian traveled the world, making some infrequent stops back in Nevivon to say hi to his sister and his adoptive mother, Lilinka.
This should be easy, right? Just pick a nice round number like 20 at the time of Lucio’s amputation and add 20/21 to it for his start of game age, right? Well, we have a few problems. Number 1, Nadia is the oldest LI with Lucio right behind her. He has to be younger than them. Number 2 is Julian’s age relative to Portia and the backstory information we get in both their routes. Julian’s route tells us that the family’s ship was caught in a storm and sank, killing both parents. The two children were rescued by Mazelinka, who in turn took them to Nevivon to be raised among other orphans by Lilinka and the other grannies there. According to the route, Julian learned to read from Lilinka not so long before he sought out Nazali. Within his own route, Julian never mentions remembering his parents or how old he was when the storm took them. In Portia’s route, we confirm that she was too young to remember anything but Julian does remember their parents, aunt, and the storm. It’s likely that Julian in particular had to spend a few years learning to read either the Arcana equivalent of Common or the language of Nevivon (or both). Given that the people of Nevivon had no trouble with Portia and his actual names while the Vesuvians couldn’t pronounce them correctly, we can safely say that the Devoraks’ homeland shares some linguistic similarities with Nevivon.
So, Julian needs to be old enough to be at a point in his training where he could be trusted to amputate a man’s arm correctly but young enough that we can get a few years of sibling bonding before Julian gives in to his wanderlust. If the memory from Portia’s route can be trusted, he looks to be between 8-12 when the ship goes down while Portia is old enough to speak. So Portia’s 2-4 there. We basically took the average, which puts Julian at about 17 when he met Lucio the first time and 11 when the ship went down. He gets 2-3 years to get his feet under him before joining Nazali at 13-14 and Portia gets some funny stories about her big brother. So, by the time the game begins, Julian’s around 37.
Muriel's age is up in the air save a couple of pertinent Lucio dates. We know that Morga's tribe launched a desperate raid against Muriel's people in the steppe which devastated both groups. The raid occurred after Lucio was banished. Khamgalai also foresaw the attack and helped organize an effort to remove the tribe's children from danger before the raid. Muriel was one such child. So off the bat, we know that Muriel was of the right age to be evacuated: old enough that he could technically survive alone, too young to join the warriors defending the tribe.
We also know thanks to the mini tale that young Muriel was on the streets for a while before Asra joins his life, as Muriel mentions that Asra is the "new kid." Lucio appears in the story as the new count, complete with his golden prosthetic. Muriel is also older than Asra in this tale- we can see Muriel thinking of him as a younger kid. His sprite looks to be around the same age as young Julian's, 8-12. All the facts combined put Muriel at at least 28 years old (making him 6 or so when he left his tribe); realistically, he's probably older. We go with 30 because it's a nice round number that takes into account the travel time to Vesuvia from the Shining Steppe and gives Muriel some time alone before Asra arrives.
Portia's age is the most elastic. We already went over it with Julian but basically, her only real dates of reference are that she's about 3 when the ship goes down and she has a few years with Julian before he seeks Nazali. Exactly how long ago the shipwreck was is flexible; and as we said with Julian, it is possible to age him, Lucio, and Nadia up without messing up the relative timeline. It is also possible to lower the age gap between the Devorak siblings by aging Portia up slightly or aging Julian down slightly. We chose 29 for Portia because of our calculations of Julian's age.
Asra's age is the most fixed of the LIs. Lucio has ruled Vesuvia for 20 years counting the goat years, he obtained his prosthetic very early in or right before his reign, and Asra's parents, who built the thing, went missing when Asra was 5. Asra is at least 25 and not older than 27 at the start of the game. We chose 26 to account for a potential year between Lucio gaining the arm and fully ascending as count.

I haven't played Lucio's route, but I know Nadia gives some tidbits as to what their marriage was like. The marriage was arranged via correspondence between the pair. Nadia sought out a way to prove herself and her individual strength to her family, and Vesuvia was the perfect "pet project" to cut her teeth on. Lucio wanted an esteemed, noble bride to fancy himself up and legitimize his rulership. Once the arrangement was nailed down, Nadia arrived at Vesuvia with much fanfare (Asra and the Apprentice attended the parade). Nadia and Lucio married shortly after.
As for the marriage itself, Nadia mentions she would bring ideas and plans for the city's improvement to Lucio, and he would brush her off and/or say he'd do it, but then not do anything or delay the process so long that nothing happened (there's a secret reason for this, and it's revealed in Portia's route). Like in the screenshot you shared! Even as the city's infrastructure crumbled, Lucio maintained popularity as a ruler, especially among the wealthy and middle classes, and thanks, in large part, to the Masquerade. Nadia became lonely and disheartened, and kind of curled in on herself. She didn't feel needed, and no one listened to her. She was an appendage to Lucio...or like a ghost haunting the palace's halls lol. Valerius was her closest approximation to a friend, and he was having a torrid affair with her husband. Honestly sounds like homesickness and depression to me.
So yeah, not the best marriage! Again, Idk if Lucio talks about his marriage to Nadia in his route, so this is all from her perspective. I think in the Heart Hunter mini-game, Nadia says their marriage was the worst period of her life. I hope this story time helped! :D
Omg yes this is very helpful!! You're amazing ❤️
I was wondering because I've read his route and hers and she has a much darker way of talking about their relationship. And he has a nickname for her (Noddy) which I thought could imply that there was affection between them once.
He slept with Valerius!! Scandalous......although I won't deny I wish MC could have a route with him too 😆 there's just something about him!

2, 3 and 17 for Tam, Tilly, Temperance and Zelda?
I started this on my phone and then realized I couldn't figure out how to put in cuts so I had to come back and put it here. Oops.
2) What is the OC’s house like? Lots of plants, spacious/cozy, built for comfort/built for function, etc.
I made moodboards for this one! Easier to show than explain and I was bored as fuck during the SGA meeting I was just sitting in.
Tamryn
Tumblr media
(I want to point out for his that he’s less concerned with coherent theme and more with functionality, so it can look a little sparse sometimes, but what’s he gonna do? Look at it?
But he likes color, and chooses bolder ones in areas he spends the most time in - like his kitchen or his living room, where he passes a lot of time when he’s not out and about)
Zelda
Tumblr media
(Zelda lives above her shop, and the bottom left is always how I’ve imagined the entrance to be.)
Matilda
Tumblr media
(She loves vibrant patterns and colors, but everything has a touch of cottage to it - not like rustic cottage like Zelda, but more Italian cottage of your dreams condensed into an apartment, to make herself feel a little more at home in Vesuvia.)
Temperance
Tumblr media
(Spoiled. Likes to drown in luxury, and they can afford it. They’ve earned it. Dark colors are preferred, even if they may not be ‘trendy’.)
3) What is the OC’s favorite tea, coffee, cocoa, or other warm calming beverage?
Tamryn
The man will drink coffee any time, any place, death over decaf ass that he is, but there is one specific drink he reserves solely for a treat: cafe au lait. It’s also an ideal time if he can snag a croissant to pair with it. He will tell you it’s okay to appropriate from the Fr*nch, they deserve it.
Zelda
Though forever suffering her brother’s jabs that tea is just leaf water, she knows what she likes. For comfort, Zelda would turn to a good London Fog, close enough to her preferred Earl Grey but just enough of a hassle to make to warrant it being called a treat. She’ll fight you if you try and tell her lavender tastes like soap, though.
Matilda
Apple cider, apple cider, apple cider. It’s a personal favorite of hers and she will drink it like it’s oxygen. However, if booze is on the table, she kindly requests and apple cider based hot toddy. Spoil her. She deserves it.
Temperance
They’ll tell you grappa, to fuck with you, because they wouldn’t touch that shit if it were between that and chugging saltwater. But in reality they’re a fan of a classic cocoa, the richer the chocolate the better. Please introduce them to mini marshmallows, you will get a delighted face unlike any expression you see from Temperance.
17) What is the OC’s biggest comfort food?
I actually really like this collection of OCs for this one because all of their dishes are comfort foods from where they grew up and emotional experiences attached to them, so I’ll touch on that a bit while I go. Of course you know most of these, Jules, since I blab at you constantly, but I digress.
Tamryn and Zelda are both strongly Russian and Polish coded, on top of the Ashkenazi Jewish background that they both have. Family mealtime was always a focal point for both of them growing up, but one of their reconnecting activities since reunion was going through both of their parents’ recipe cards and trying to recreate those dishes as they remembered having them. Some of have been hits and plenty have been trial and error, but Tam's favorite comfort food by far is rosół, which was the go-to in their household for when someone was feeling under the weather. Zelda, on the other hand, would say hers are pierogis, stuffed with potatoes and cheese, like they would make on rainy days before settling in to play games together.
Tilly’s home province of Lulia is based heavily on the northern Italian region of Liguria, among other influences. Her oldest sister, Adrasteia, was the first one of all her siblings to be allowed to cook unsupervised in the kitchen. Matilda was the only one with the patience to be taste-tester, and Adrasteia perfected her 'signature dish' - foccacia, a dish nobody in her family can replicate the same way her oldest sister does. It's pretty much tradition for Adrasteia to make it for family gatherings, and she doesn't mind, as it takes the stress of planning what to bring or make off her own plate.
Temperance, on the other hand, is from a place coded toward Calabria, in southern Italy. They don’t often think about home, but when they do, they think about being eight years old and absolutely shredding their knees playing outside with the other children in the neighborhood. Mama always patched them up, sat them down, and had them dry their tears before handing them a plate loaded with pasta and 'nduja.

It was time Donna got an updated bio/backstory! Most of this is relatively the same, but the more I’ve developed Damien, the more I've developed their family history! Undercut is their childhood history but this is also general info of how they are/behave in-game :3 For a more detailed timeline of their life pre-game, see this OG post here as the info is the same!  MAJOR trigger warnings for mentions of: attempted infanticide, childhood trauma/abuse, and mentions of anxiety/depression. If any of the names have changed from previous posts shhhh I have bad memory and lose my posts often LMAO
Tumblr media
For someone who enchanted their hair to change with their emotions, they are not exactly the most forthcoming when it comes to their true feelings. Donna strives to always appear “put together” and carefree, but they are a very deeply anxious, insecure, and paranoid person. Their gaps in memory severely impact their confidence, and they are very paranoid of setting off migraines. Despite that, though, Donna always tries to come off as relaxed and in control. They’re almost to a fault extremely understanding and open, and many gravitate towards them to let off steam. Many of their card readings turn into mini “therapy” sessions, and they’re more than happy to be that for their customers. They are truly a mixture of the “mom friend” and “friendly neighborhood stoner” heh
While they are inherently introverted, they are very interested in having multiple partners and exploring their sexuality, and while Asra is away, they’re a frequent patron at the Raven to scope out some one-night stands. They notoriously are awful at gauging people’s feelings towards them, though, which causes plenty of conflict (whether they know this or not).
When finally approached by the Countess of Vesuvia, Donna can’t say anything but yes: they see helping her as a means of truly showing to everyone, especially Asra, that they are a capable person, and most importantly, they cannot help but feel they are somehow connected to it all...
Family History and Birth
Donna’s story does not have a very happy beginning at all. Donna’s father, Richard Gatti, comes from a long line of magicians who specialized in blood and dark magic. At some point in his lineage, his grandfathers began contact with The Devil Arcana, resulting in each generation trying to one-up the other essentially in their displays of devotion and deals. Many wound up completely turning as a result. Richard felt that a true display of submission would be to give up one of his own children to the Arcana to show his loyalty. His family, surprisingly, disagreed with some of his ideas, and he broke off from them entirely to pursue a suitable partner, all under the impression that he was being guided by The Devil himself.
Insert Marisol Ortega, Donna’s mom. Another magician, Marisol was a shy and reserved woman who constantly felt outshone by her younger sister, Dominique. While her and Dominique were close, there was a level of resentment there too. When Marisol and Richard met, it was an instant infatuation. Richard really utilized Marisol’s need for company to his advantage and isolated Marisol from the rest of her family by moving often. Somewhere along the line, he was able to convince Marisol to help him fulfil his plans with the promise that by giving up her first-born, she would have an entire family of some of the most powerful magicians imaginable. It was at this time, as well, that she also was convinced she was being visited by The Devil, thus solidifying for her that what they were doing was right.
What neither were expecting was that Dominique would find out about Marisol’s pregnancy. While she wasn’t completely in the loop, and she had an inn to run on her own, Dom made sure to keep on the perimeter of things, weary of what Richard and his intentions were. Her relationship with Marisol was also nearly non-existent, but Dom stayed close either way for the sake of the baby.
By the time they had Donna, Richard wanted to wait to make sure that they were, by all accounts, a healthy baby, one with the potential for power. They limited how much contact they had with Donna at this time, but on the outside, things seemed somewhat normal. Dominique, though, sensed that something was not right and by chance managed to stop them right before they could complete the sacrifice. With nothing else to do, Dom ran with Donna in tow, severing all ties with Marisol completely to protect them. It was Dominique that initially named Donna, but Donna eventually changed their name as a teen.
Childhood and Adolescents
While Dominique was a much better maternal figure for Donna, she was also very young and never wanted children to begin with. In other words, she was very ill prepared to raise a child, especially on her own. Growing up, Donna couldn’t help but think they were somewhat of a burden and did their best not to be underfoot and useful to Dom. From a very early age, they were always paranoid and anxious that their parents would somehow come back, or worse, that The Devil would come for them himself. These feelings never leave, and even when they lose their memory, they are still paranoid of something coming for them.
As they grew up, they helped Dom run the inn and got very well acquainted with its regular patrons. Many of them also became parental figures for them (and in many ways, they were like that for Dom herself); one in particular, a professor, helped to teach Donna to read and write. While the professor was away, Donna would spend most of their free time teaching themself so that they could show off all the new words they had learned. Others taught them how to properly defend themself without magic, making them a bit more scrappy as a teen.
However, not everyone at the inn was kind to Donna, particularly Dom’s romantic partners. Many felt Donna got in the way of things and were a moocher (despite being.... a literal child), and so they took out much of their frustrations on Donna both verbally and physically. This did nothing to help with their anxiety, and in general really messed up their confidence. While Dom always tried sticking up for them or throwing out outright abusive partners, she herself was not yet fully mature enough to really steer clear of these relationships.
To keep themself motivated, Donna turned to magic. Dom herself was also a skilled green witch, and she taught Donna most of the fundamentals. While Donna was initially terrified of magic due to her parents, Dom showed them that it could be beautiful and helpful. Donna’s first real spell they did on their own was enchanting their hair to respond to their moods— Dom would complain often about “not knowing what Donna was thinking”, and they felt that this would better convey when they were happy or sad.
Sadly, not much changed for the better in Donna’s life. Feeling unsafe and knowing that their maternal family had an abandoned shop in Vesuvia (Dom never liked Vesuvia and never re-opened the shop), Donna ran away at the age of 17. Guilty and ashamed that they felt the need to even do this, they stopped communicating with Dom entirely, convinced she would want nothing to do with them anyway.
The Shop
It took A LOT of time, but Donna became very competent at running the shop on their own, mainly because of all the experience they had at the inn. Just like in-game, Donna and Asra meet at the masquerade and instantly fall for each other (well, for Donna it’s platonic, but they feel Asra is their soulmate in many ways). They really grow into their own even more once they start living together; their confidence and happiness is no longer a mask but sincere. They flourish more and more, making it the perfect time to meet a certain consul...

The Arcana characters during the Covid-19 pandemic: Part 1 (Asra, Julian, Valerius)
hi everyone! i felt really happy whilst writing this. in each set of headcanons, the apprentice lives with that character! i don’t specify if there’s anything romantic or sexual going on between them though. this is VERY detailed, i’m still writing out muriel, nadia, portia, and lucio’s headcanons so they’ll come in part 2 <3 i hope you enjoy!! AO3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/27529276/chapters/67324228
Asra
asra hosts weekly magic workshops (covering very very basic magic) with the apprentice over microsoft teams 💻 each workshop has a small fee, with all proceeds going to local vesuvian charities like mask suppliers, and food banks (who he tries to donate extra food to every week) supporting the poorest amongst their population. it was the apprentice who first suggested he do this, on a day he was feeling really afraid in the face of the pandemic.
i think he has days when he feels really helpless and trapped – and it runs a little deeper than cabin fever and restlessness. other than the pain he’d experience if he lost the apprentice again, being unable to do things freely is the worst situation he can think of... as much as asra prioritises the apprentice’s mental health, he doesn’t practice emotional expression a lot. he truly strives to be there for the apprentice and even when he remembers how they suffered after coming back...asra only cries silently at night when they are asleep – when he knows they can’t hear him.
that’s part of the reason why he’s always seemed so mysterious in the game — growing up without his parents meant that he learnt to push down his fear and put on a brave face... and one of the reasons why he goes on trips without much explanation is to escape reality for a bit. he lets his vulnerability show only on the worst of days (like the day the apprentice died). on days where asra feels really afraid of the world and defeated, the apprentice takes over his shop duties and brews much more lapsang souchong than usual to comfort him. so much that even passerbys outside the shop are caught in the smokiness of it! unlike the red plague, every community in the world is affected, and there is nowhere for asra to escape to. this includes nopal. after vesuvia’s Covid-19 situation gets better though, he and the apprentice stay there sometimes as a mini vacation of sorts and it brings him peace 🏜
asra’s leading an effort to make high quality masks more accessible to vesuvians. in fact, that local mask provider i mentioned earlier is his initiative. he set it up after seeing people buy all the beaked plague doctor masks (the PPE of vesuvia) that actual working doctors need access to. he would never admit it but, when asra thinks about the doctors, julian is the first who comes to mind. anyways, the masks asra designs are stunning. he spends tireless nights testing their 3-ply efficacy, and they aren’t just plain blue or white – there are intricate details imprinted on them through his magic 🔮
i think asra would also be really into coming up with new herbal concoctions for customers, after he notices how tired people look from being indoors all day – for example, he’s developed an immune system-boosting drink that’s a gorgeous swirly purple colour 🍶 it’s similar to traditional chinese medicine. also he only uses ethically sourced, 100% local herbs (by local, i mean from nopal and the tarske forest, where muriel helps him collect wildflowers and herbs!!)  🌿 he uses spells to counter the toxicity of his favourite belladonna flower and it becomes a superfood staple of his concoctions
he goes out every couple of days just to gather herbs and ingredients for aforementioned concoctions, always prioritising the ones he makes for the apprentice and always making those sweeter, taking more time to create colourful depths in them that resemble galaxies. asra also makes particular effort to bring back a wide range of fruits from his local trips as it always cheers the apprentice up 🍈
asra invents the most effective, affordable, environmentally-friendly, non-toxic and skin-friendly hand sanitiser and because this magician is the sweetest person ever and cares much more about people’s lives than making a profit during the pandemic, he shares the recipe online for free & magicians all around the world recreate the hand sanitiser for their local neighbourhoods. he’s since been featured in a couple of “Top 10 People You Should Follow” lists in business magazines and there’s an online petition with over 200k signatures calling for his nobel prize nomination lol. asra insists he doesn’t care about fame but when the apprentice laughs about these recognitions, they always notice asra’s eyes crinkling
asra would also become a lot more active on his youtube channel. that’s right, he’s always had a youtube channel, he’s just had a million hiatuses because of all his adventures. he has around 20,000 subscribers (and a similar amount on instagram...his feed is colourful and full of pictures depicting his travels, the shop, and above all, the apprentice). since he’s decided to stay at the shop with the apprentice – who is actually a little more vulnerable than others to viruses, because of their “reborn” form – he has the time to post weekly videos again. i think asra wouldn’t want to show his face in any of the videos, and not on his instagram either... and it’s got nothing to do with his self-esteem – he just wants the focus to be on what he’s doing rather than how he looks. the videos vary from very domestic vlogs with titles like “what two magicians do in a day” to packed af guides like “🐍 SPELLS TO REFINE AT HOME 🐍” & “crystals that can calm you during these times” and his wildly popular “carving crystals i mined: in real time” ⏳ the apprentice is a permanent fixture in all of them <3 viewers always assume they’re together and whether they are or not...that’s for you to think about ;)
asra is big on healing crystals and gemstones. like really, really big on them. he always makes sure to inform his customers and audiences that they are alternatives and not substitutes, and that sicknesses need real medicine & they can’t just wear a crystal in place of a mask (bc that’s happened before and he felt so guilty for carving and selling the crystal in question) what’s strange is, even though he usually sources his crystals from other countries during his travels, there seem to more than ever all around the shop and the apartment upstairs..
when the apprentice asks about it, it turns out that asra goes mining alone in nopal! he doesn’t really like to mine the actual desert as he’s only ever dug up gold and silver there. one time, he accidentally stumbled upon a cave at the edge of nopal and – ever the curious wandering magician – he ventured deep within it and found amazing crystals and gemstones everywhere 💎 he never mentioned it to the apprentice because he always thought it was too dangerous for them to go, until they remind him it’s dangerous for him too. from that day onwards they go looking for crystals every weekend together :’)
if asra was living alone, he would be fine with just wearing a mask to go outside. but since he lives with the apprentice – and especially after what happened during the red plague – he’s not risking ANYTHING. he wears aviator goggles and eco-vinyl gloves when he’s in the market, just to be extra safe, though when he’s out foraging he takes off his mask because there’s usually no one else there & it’s way too humid. the apprentice likes to make fun of how steampunk he looks & the way the big goggles make his hair extra poofy  🤍
Julian
julian is on the frontlines of the vesuvian pandemic response. with his experience as a doctor – specifically, a frontline doctor during the red plague who discovered the cure (!!!) – he is revered by new doctors and nurses, most of whom are volunteers. when the pandemic first begins, there aren’t formal hospitals or medical schools set up in vesuvia, so he has to make do by reopening his clinic in the centre city, as an alternative to valdemar’s one in the palace – which, quite frankly is the stuff of nightmares for most of the population
as you know, julian is universally loved by the vesuvian people... so the waiting list of the hospital branch he works at is ALWAYS full. patients always report how gentle and attentive he is and how comforted they feel in his presence. even though he has to wear a hazmat suit and the plague doctor beak mask, he is known for visiting the most severely affect Covid-19 patients and holding their hands in their last moments.
the apprentice brings different flowers to put inside his beak mask every day (this is a headcanon that i’m pretty sure originated from the writer telanaris on AO3!!) to give julian some small comfort amongst all the death and suffering he’s witness to every day. they go out to the tarske forest or even to nopal with asra, or sometimes alone. because julian mentioned wolfsbane was his favourite flower once, the apprentice picked some without knowing that they’re poisonous. long story short, they blacked out and woke up in his clinic with an extremely worried julian nearly in tears launching into a self-blame monologue, about to black out himself from staying by their side the whole night
i also think julian would be featured in the news a lot and sometimes pretty randomly. he gives official weekly Covid-19 updates on the main vesuvian tv news channel – though the apprentice stands in for him after the first two weeks (he tries very hard to refuse their help because he doesn’t want to burden them, even though they assure him they actually want to relieve him of at least one of his burdens since he’s a full-time pandemic doctor – and because he almost fainted from exhaustion the second time. the apprentice kindly, but sternly asks him to take care of himself too, as he does everyone else)
he would just be on the news in general too...his random acts of kindness would go viral on social media – “Vesuvian Doctor Helps Elderly In Race for Toilet Paper.” ❤️ “Local Doctor Delivers Groceries for Struggling Families.” and his “grandmothers” in nevivon always get excited when they see him on the news and send letters to congratulate him (much to his embarrassment). julian would also go viral on twitter. one photo of him has 100k retweets: “oh my fcking god i just rounded the corner and there’s this really fucking t a l l man handing out free bottles of sanitiser. i don’t need to see him under his plague beak to know he’s hot af HELP” and the apprentice would retweet it saying “so proud of my bf” and the internet would go wild over this comment. it’s up to you to decide if they’re actually together or not hehe bc who knows the apprentice might’ve meant best friend 🤷🏻‍♀️
he sets up a youtube channel with no profile picture or description to upload a single video... “How to PROPERLY use hand sanitiser!” and all the comments are just about his looks and voice 😚 it reaches cities outside of vesuvia and because the hand sanitiser in the video is locally made (by asra!) it quickly becomes sold out by either those who don’t know how to do magic or people without access to the products being replicated by other magicians... because a lot of them actually marked up the price :(  + even communities that are afraid of magic buy it because asra’s detailed method and julian’s instructive marketing combined are that effective. a power couple... in another life, perhaps 💫
julian would then be invited to do a city-sponsored video guide on how to wash your hands (the idea is helmed by nadia, of course, who recognises the usefulness of his newfound fame). not only would he be extremely exhausted from full-day shifts, he’d also be overthinking to the point of hyperventilation before filming starts – but he surprises the apprentice with how professional and clear he is in the videos. a true thespian at heart, instead of happy birthday, he improvises on set and sings an old tune from nevivon instead as he washes his hands for 20 seconds 🌊 lemme just say...his hands also go viral lol. also, julian could be a tik tok star if he wanted to. he’s certainly got the moves for it, and can easily achieve the e-boy vibe – plus, he’s gone viral on there several times already!
even though julian doesn’t seem to care when he’s in danger, he’s very meticulous when it comes to the apprentice’s safety. living through his second pandemic and working with patients first hand means that he is very aware of how severe the situation is. every morning he prepares a 99:1 water:bleach ratio spray to spray his shoes when he comes home. he refuses to even touch the apprentice (for fear of passing on anything from the clinic) before he’s taken off his mask, thrown it away safely – then showering and washing his hair thoroughly.
having grown up in nevivon, i like to think that julian is really environmentally conscious, especially with regards to the sea. he used to go diving in the sea to retrieve trash, and as a young man he made a habit of going to the docks every weekend to remove plastic containers and wires from around the necks of salt seals 🌫. so, no matter how tired he is, when he comes home to the apprentice, julian never forgets to snip the ear loops of his surgical masks in half, as he knows sea creatures can get caught up in them. i’m sure he makes a second youtube video at some point to talk about this issue. tldr julian is an environmental activist <3
Valerius
so it’s been a long while since valerius was freed from you-know-who. his personality has definitely changed a lot since then... he’s back to his old and real self (which we never really saw in the game) 🌄 he works side by side with nadia now, not only as colleagues but also genuine friends, and he oversees the health department. he sets up dozens of hospitals and more general clinics in and out of vesuvia, consulting experienced doctors in vesuvia like julian as well as officials from neighbouring countries and states. as a side note, valerius is actually a very humble person and the most attentive listener you will ever meet. people from neighbouring governments & royal households admire him immensely as a result <3
out of everyone, i think valerius would be the most careful during the pandemic. during the red plague he witnessed lucio’s illness up close and it’s had a profound impact on him. he worries about the apprentice, a lot. more than anyone who knows him expects him to. he’s always the first to notice and remind them if their mask is falling down their nose, or if they’re about to rub their eyes with unwashed hands. you will never catch him forgetting to wear a mask or touching his face at all when he’s outside. he takes the time to use disinfectant wipes to clean everything he brings back home one by one, and though valerius is adamant it’s not the apprentice’s responsibility (because most of the things are usually files from the palace he has to go through before the next morning or things he brings back from the market) the apprentice always insists they want to help out :’) so it becomes a nice daily evening ritual, sitting together on the floor after returning from the palace, cleaning their things in silence together 💜
speaking of things he buys, valerius loves the marketplace. he discovers it one day by accident when looking for a bouquet of 🌹 red roses 🌹 to bring back for the apprentice, who was particularly upset that day after helping valerius out at the new hospitals and not being able to help any of the patients as much as they would have liked with their magic. when valerius stumbles across the marketplace, he is absolutely amazed by the colours and smells that surround him. he spends a lot of his free time and lunch hours looking through jewellery stalls – especially hairpins and hair sticks.
anyone looking at him would be able to see how much care valerius puts into maintaining his hair. because he washes his hair every day (to avoid bringing any Covid-19 related germs into bed), and because being free from you-know-who has made him a lot more open to magic... not to mention because he actually lives with the apprentice now 💜 i think valerius would also consult asra about magical hair masks and conditioners, to keep his very long and thick hair healthy and soft, despite washing it every day.
he knows from accidentally overhearing asra a long time ago that the apprentice loves pumpkin bread, so he asks around for hours until he finally finds the baker’s stall 🍞 it takes hours because valerius is really bad with directions and gets lost a few times... it doesn’t help that he’s distracted by all the different foods and jewellery that he’s never seen before (he picks up a nice ring for the apprentice, and yes he’s so attentive and familiar with jewellery that he guesses their ring band size correctly). from that day onwards, once or twice a week, he wakes up a little earlier than usual to sneak out of his estate and buy the bread, so that the apprentice can enjoy it – freshly made, warm, and their favourite – for breakfast 🥣
yes, he has an estate (this mr. darcy-like headcanon is from jane_ways on AO3!!) and he treats his household employees very well, offering paid leave for all of them so that they can stay with their own families. in their absence, he proves to be an incredible cook, albeit a little rusty because he hasn’t cooked anything substantial since being under you-know-who’s influence and because he’s been too busy at the palace to eat anything that isn’t catered.
due to social distancing, the apprentice and him eat in a lot more – valerius is very ambitious and soon moves past making homemade dishes... he cooks blown out, elaborate dinners and prepares creative and (visually) beautiful packed lunches to bring to work 🍴 whenever the apprentice has to work late he brings them dinners inspired by the colours of the shop that day – he is hesitant to admit it, at first, but he’s always admired the crystals there, and he is often inspired by them in his food presentations. asra is ever perceptive and gifts him a few (polished amethyst because he used to be an insomniac, black tourmaline and selenite to keep you-know-who at bay 💎) soon after the apprentice frees him from the curse
i really see valerius as someone who against all expectations is really into hands-on work like welding and carving – things that can get messy. he’s slowly trying to get rid of it, but since he first started working at the palace he’s maintained a very prim and posh appearance. he really loves to weld jewellery like rings and earrings. before the pandemic began, he took a few classes in the marketplace – classes which are on hiatus now, of course. he's set up a little studio in his estate and wears a blacksmith’s apron and goggles and everything. it’s honestly quite the sight. whenever the apprentice is working longer hours at the shop making potions with asra, he goes into the studio to continue his projects. some of the ones he’s proudest of are: the pure-silver wine rack, the gold headbands and rings he makes for himself – and then for the apprentice too when they keep “borrowing” his – and his favourite of all is his first ever project: the cast iron skillet that took him over a week to weld. he hand engraved the apprentice and his initials onto its handle <3  you don't need to read any of this as a romantic gesture, because friends can definitely do the same!
i like to think that prakra managed the pandemic especially well, and that valerius sits down to have zoom calls with queen nasrin to discuss ways the two places can collaborate and help each other 👑 she becomes his mentor of sorts, as he’s still relatively young and inexperienced when it comes to governing a city-state like vesuvia. when nasrin visited nadia before at the palace, she was not a fan of valerius at all and was just as wary of him as nadia was. however she becomes very fond of him as a result of their collaboration, and even starts to see him as a son ❕ other than the apprentice, nasrin would be the second person valerius talks the most freely with. initially he is very reluctant to share anything about his life, let alone his past before landing the consul job – but he eventually opens up and nasrin plays a role in helping him move past his failures (his eyes are opened after the apprentice frees him, and he feels immense shame from how he didn’t lead vesuvia very successfully in nadia’s absence)

Okay, everything I say in this is very basic information about the characters that you find out early in their route or you find out at some point while playing anyone else’s route. Nothing is a heavy spoiler that will ruin the story line.
Julien - sexy as fuck I know, but is a whiny bitch and almost all of the fandom can agree he is a bottom or/and submissive. Of course there are people who head cannon otherwise, and that’s okay. I haven’t played his entire route just cuz he isn’t my type personality wise, but basically he is a wanted man of Vesuvia and a plague doctor. He likes spending his time in bars getting drunk and has been known to be a bit of a bard! However he is INCREDIBLY BOOK SMART! Man can read and write which is really great for someone in this setting, is a doctor, and I think he is bilingual if I remember correctly. That might be a popular head cannon. He is a little flirty if I remember correctly!
Asra - magician, cute lamb dude with a pet snake, IS NOT AN INNOCENT LAMB THOUGH. Technically like the 707 or Mammon of the game and loves you in every route. The MC is his apprentice in every route. We often see him visiting the shop the two of you run for brief periods of time before leaving to a mysterious location on a mysterious quest again. Mischievous and romantic. I have played his entire route and I like it but his reversed end is creepy as hell-
Nadia - the countess. Boss bitch. She is a bad ass bitch but so fucking kind and empathetic at the same time. She actually cares about her people and married into the family, does not have any kids, prefers when the MC is direct with her instead of lying or beating around the bush. Loves to tease.
Muriel - MOUNTAIN OF A GENTLE GIANT OF A MAN! I REPEAT- GENTLE GIANT! Big buff awkward man who lives in the woods alone with his chickens and wolf. Very sweet. Very large. Standoffish and cold at first but he opens up to you. He is pretty shy and doesn’t like big crowds- he has an interesting back story though that I won’t get into here.
Lucio - the dead count of Vesuvia. His death is a little bit a part of the storyline for every route and there is a lot more to the story than you think. HE HAS TWO ADORABLE DOGS! I love his dogs. They are hunting dogs and are absolutely adorable. We see them most in his route and Nadia’s route but they make an appearance in every route, they are characters. He himself is arrogant, self centered, overly confident, thinks he is beloved but everyone kind of finds him annoying, and likes goats. He has good points and so far I like his route. He is very prideful. You might not like him in other people’s routes, you’re not supposed to as he is the antagonist, but I’ve found his route to be pretty interesting so far. I’m also a sucker for a man who loves his dogs- dude he treats his dogs better than anyone else. Yes, he is a ghost technically but again, there is a lot more to that story than you think there is.
Portia - best friend. Bubbly, flirty, and so much fun! She will prioritize you and protect you even if she is just Nadia’s favorite servant. Has a kitty named PeiPei! She loves to laugh and is very curious. She doesn’t mind getting into some mischief. Has a brother.
The Arcana story line it’s self is mostly a romantic tragedy. There are adorable and gorgeous CGs you can get and the paid options I HIGHLY recommend saving up for because I’ve found it to be so worth it. You can obviously go back and replay chapters to see paid options and get cgs I think it just costs a key or something.
The arcana is also mostly just story. There is the wheel you can spin daily where your either get coins or a trinket. Collect the trinkets to unlock 3 specific side stories. After you’ve gotten them all and played them all then you can start selling trinkets. You have to sell them in groups of 10 and every 10 gives you 50 coins.
There is the post card game. It’s a mini board game where you can collect post cards from your favorite characters. You get three plays per day and at most can get one post card per play. I always suggest picking what character you go for based on what character you’re able to get to on the first roll. Once you play the game you’ll understand it better, I’m pretty sure they give you a tutorial. If they don’t, watch someone else playing it on YouTube really quick, it’s not hard concept I am just bad at explaining it which is why I’m in even attempting to right now lol.
And there is the daily coins you get when your log in. Every 7 days, instead of coins you get a tarot reading (that you don’t have to use immediately) that can be performed by Asra, Nadia, or Julien. (The original three game characters)
To get keys, it should give you keys after a set amount of hours. However pretty often they find something to celebrate and will have days of infinite keys or giving us keys and coins. It’ll take a little while but I’ve found that it’s one of the more generous games.
If you’re want to know anything else, I will happily share.
thanks dude

Hi there! We've never interacted before but I must say that I enjoy your writing very much! If it wouldn't be too inappropriate, could you please maybe write something for Muriel, Asra and mc being together in a polyamorous relationship? Sfw or nsfw, your choice. Forgive me if you done something like this before, I was born yesterday. Thanks in advance!💖
🍃🔮Muriel + Asra - Triad with MC
Lemons anyone? (if you’re a bottom, lmk)
Muriel moves into the shop. He was probably going to, anyway, but now he really has no excuse
You do keep his hut in the woods; it’s a nice, cozy getaway in the summer, when Nopal is too hot to handle
The shop is usually closed because you and Asra are tabling at Vesuvia’s many festivals, anyway, and it’s nice to get away from the bustle, just the three of you
Asra bakes constantly; Muriel would be more uncomfortable having treats all the time, but since he’s not the only one who’s being spoiled, it’s easier for him to relax and enjoy
(Asra’s particularly fond of baking mini versions of things, and Muriel gripes about how big and clumsy his hands look, but he gets so flustered and red when you gang up to feed them to him)
Dates are peaceful, intimate, and outside the city, usually - a picnic on a hidden beach, a hot spring deep in the Forest, butterfly-catching (and releasing, Muriel insists on it) in the Fields
And “comfortable silence” is the name of the game, curling up together in the bed while Muriel carves and Asra tinkers with whatever his hobby of the week is
Rarely do you split off into couples to do things; most everything is a three-person activity
Although if you and Asra want to go for a gondola ride, Muriel will see you at home
He makes an effort to spruce up the hut and the shop - decorations were superfluous when it was just him, but now he has two people to make home nice for
The wedding is very, very small - Nadia and the three of you under a canopy in the forest, exchanging flowers and vows you wrote yourselves
You should see how many drafts Muriel went through, but they’re beautiful; Asra, of course, improvises his in the moment
Faust couldn’t be happier and tells you often Muriel has some of her favorite shoulders to drape on (Up high!) - and yours are a close seconds

So I just discovered something...
I open up my Mini-Book of Edgar Allen Poe ( as ya do) to read the Mask of the Red Death.
My Arcana buddy will know there’s already a bunch of that sweet symbolism in the game. ( see red plauge/red death and a fancy masquerade)
HOWEVER
The main character is Prince Prospero
Which is revealed to be the name of one of the previous counts of Vesuvia

The Arcana
The Arcana is a fun mobile game with a few mini-games. When I downloaded this game the first time I just thought it was a tarot-style game, then was pleased to find it’s virtual novel. After five chapters, each named after the major arcana, I was presented with a choice: pick a character to romance.
Tumblr media
It’s an otome game... Thankfully Nix Hydra decided to reach to a broader audience allowing to choose your pronouns: He/Him, She/Her, They/Them. So my boi Darius is on an adventure trying to get some action with his own Master Asra. Great start.
Roger Caillois describes play as a voluntary action that is separate from space and time and which, although has rules, is unproductive in its scope. To a certain extent, he’s right. I’ve played this game because I wanted to. As this is story-driven, it pulls you into its own time and space. It’s also a visual novel so I’m not doing anything productive in the traditional sense.
I believe play is both a voluntary and involuntary activity. In the case of The Arcana, I am willfully playing it, but any time I’m bored, tables become platforms and the floor is lava, and my imaginary hero must traverse the terrain to reach their goal. Play does have its own boundaries.
The Arcana is a mobile game and my magic circle is limited to wherever I’m sitting and reading the happenings in the game, but I am transported to the rich landscape of Vesuvia and meeting a variety of people from all over the world. I could have lived months while unraveling the story but it would only have been half an hour IRL. Although I am not actually doing anything while reading and debating with myself whether I should choose one action over the other in the game, I still believe that playing any game is productive in its own way. Play keeps the mind stimulated and allows us to practice problem solving skills. In The Arcana, this is presented as choices you can make throughout the story. If you want the final chapter to be a lovey-dovey happily ever after, then you must pick the right things to say. It may not be much, but even the manner other characters solve their own dilemmas can teach the player new things.

Heart Hunter Theory
I have a theory that the postcards in the new mini-game, Heart Hunter holds more than just cute moments and interactions with the characters.
But what if...
These postcards were actually memories of the MC combined? (Both the memories they had before the incident of losing it and after they lost it) I just think it feels like it, especially the card with Asra talking about Lazaret. So it makes me think what if these were really the MC’s memories slowly being restored?
Plus, another fact that makes me think this is highly possible was, it was a given fact that the MC does not remember anything about Vesuvia, or at least what had happened. So what does Heart Hunter start with? A ton of photos and memories locked away and unknown to the MC.
Maybe it’s just me, but yeah these are my thoughts on it. It’s just a theory though lol

Arcana OC mini-fic, 2
The Rowdy Raven was warm and comfortable, mirroring and amplifying those same feelings within Lizbeth. She had been so thirsty from her flight from the palace that she had chugged down the first drink Julian and brought her. Now the alcohol that had hidden beneath the fizz and the taste of fruit was softening the ache in her limbs and warming her cheeks. Beneath the table her foot, free on it's sandal, brushed against the supple leather of Julian's boot.  Oh, those boots...
She cut the thought off as quickly as she could manage. Her ears were burning with embarrassment and she hoped the Doctor would not notice. Luckily for her he was still pouring over the drawing she had brought with her.  His eye had darkened as it roved over the map-like swirls and she could feel the melancholy and self-loathing wafting off of him. Lizbeth would have liked to get a closer look at his emotions, but that would require skin to skin contact and the only bits of Julian not covered by cloth or leather was his face and neck. No, that would be too intimate.
“So, what is it?” She plucked his drink from in front of him with an exaggerated flourish, trying to tease him into smiling once more. Sitting beside him here, before he had unfurled the scroll and the atmosphere had gone somber, it had felt natural. Like they fit together. Like they were concatenate.
“A human brain.” He sighed, reached for his drink and missed. He looked alarmed for a moment and Lizbeth sputtered with laughter when he finally glanced up and saw her drinking from it. “Minx...” He made the comment with a grin but she knew his heart wasn't in it. That drawing had stirred up dark memories in him.  She regretted letting him see she had it. “You best return this.” He continued, taking his drink back and draining it. “They'll surely notice it's missing.”
How could Lizbeth lighten the mood? She must. She wanted to see him smile again. “I think we should have another round.” She said, pushing her empty tankard towards him. “You nearly scared me to death when you broke into my shop. I believe it will take more than one drink for me to forgive you.”
His bark of laughter sounded more like the real him. “Trying to get me drunk?” He asked, his grin wide and roguish.
Gods above and below, that smile. Lizbeth felt her heart stutter but she returned the look with a cheeky smirk of her own. “No, I'm trying to get me drunk. I deserve it after the last two days I've had.”
He was away with a flourish, seeming to glide across the room to the bar. He stopped to peer at a card game going on at one table and whispered something to one of the players. A moment after he stepped away the crowd around the table erupted into cries of victory and moans on capitulation. The people of Vesuvia loved Doctor Jules, it was so easy to tell. They believed him innocent. Was he? He seemed as lost as her sometimes, as lost as Nadia had been when they shared dessert on the veranda. Did he have black chasms instead of memories as well?
And Lizbeth, how did she know him? Why had she flushed with embarrassment in the memory the little pendant had given her? She pressed a hand to her chest, finding the wood carving beneath the fabric of her shirt. Why would she have made something to remind her of Julian?
She was still in thought when Julian slid back into the booth beside her, and she startled to attention with a quiet “oh!” Her thumb trailed over the beak of the pendant, still under her shirt, before her hand fell to the table.
“You okay, dear? You looked far away for a moment to there. Not recommended.  You really do need to keep your wits about you in this part of town. Don't know what sort of scoundrels will try to make off with your coin purse.” He grinned and slid his arm over her shoulders, giving her a little shake as he did so. She laughed, knowing that that's what he wanted to hear. “Ah, that's better. Now drink, I hear you're trying to drink yourself to oblivion.”
Lizbeth took a sip from her newly filled tankard, surprised when it wasn't the fizzy brew he had given her before. This one was blue and sweet and strong. It certainly did promise oblivion, so she sipped slowly, savoring the feel of the alcohol crawling into her bloodstream. Julian smiled down at her and picked a leaf he had missed earlier from her hair. The offending foliage joined the rest of the burrs and twigs and leaves they had pulled from her person.  The little pile was growing embarrassingly tall.  “I'm sorry, I was only trying to remember something.” She shrugged her shoulders, mostly to feel the weight of his arm try to limit the motion. “I'm back now. Thank you again for the drink.”
He waved away her thanks the same way she would swat at a gnat. “It's the least I could do!” He cleared his throat and turned his head to look across the room. Liz noticed the blush spreading across his cheeks before he could hide it. “So I shared some medical know-how with you, would you like a turn at this impromptu show and tell? Oh, I know, you could show me some of that magic!” He wiggled the fingers of his free hand, a pantomime of casting a spell, and waggled his eyebrows up and down.
He was changing the subject. It was painfully obvious, but Lizbeth giggled and allowed it. “Oh, but there's so much I could show you. What would you like to see?”
The playful edge left his gaze, replaced by something akin to longing. “What's your very favorite?” His voice had dropped lower and he leaned closer. “What has the most meaning to you? What made you want to continue being a witch?”
Lizbeth was breathless. It felt like he was asking to see something more personal than just a simple spell. Without a word she reached to the pile of debris before her and plucked out a leaf. She ran her fingers over it, as if in reverence, then held it between her cupped hands. She closed her eyes, brought an image to the forefront of her mind, felt the little spark of warmth against her palms, and she let her hands fall apart to reveal a swatch of beige linen. She closed her hands again, opened them, and now the fabric was amethyst silk.  Closed, open; a rose. Closed, open; a daffodil.  Closed, open; and needle and thread. Closed. Open.  Closed. Open. Closed. Open. Finally the leaf was a leaf again, and it was only then that Lizbeth opened her eyes and looked at Julian.
His aura held equal parts fear and wonder. He didn't understand and that frightened him, but he was absolutely mesmerized.  “That was fantastic.” He whispered, still awestruck.
Lizbeth blushed and took a long pull from her drink. “Just a bit of stuff changing. Nothing too complicated.” She tried to demure, but Julian was having none of it.
“Stuff changing! Nonsense! You'll be shape shifting next, I guarantee it.”
Her responding laugh must have been too self deprecating because his gaze went from confusion to concern before she could get herself back under control. “I wish.” She muttered.
His free hand went to her chin, begging she look at him instead of into the depths of her drink. “What would you become?” He asked.  “If you could be anything?”
She could get lost in his gaze. She was lost in it. Drowning. “A dragon.” She breathed the truth out as if scared to say it. “To be strong. To fly. To keep a prince or princess trapped in a tower.” She laughed. “To escape the curse in my blood.”
“A curse?” Julian's eye narrowed in fury. “Who would dare curse you, Lizbeth?”
She waved off his anger and took another swig of her drink. “Not a curse laid upon me, not that sort, but... Witches refer to it as a bad magic cross, when some sort of non-human magic makes its way into a human bloodline. Have you heard of the Ahmari family?”
“Ahmari?” His fingers drummed against the top of her thigh as he thought. “They were a magic handling family, yes?”
Lizbeth laughed, a sound as dry as crackling fire.  “They were great mages, powerful.  They managed to fly close enough to the sun to breed with dragons.” She leaned towards the center of the table and blew against the flame of the candle there.  The light flickered then grew, sprouting wings, a long, arching neck, a thrashing tail.  The miniature dragon circled above the candle then landed upon the wick.  It surveyed them as if it were a living thing and they were to be it's next meal.
“Their offspring were terribly powerful,” Lizbeth continued, her eyes unable to leave the dragon she had created, “but they were all bad crosses and many went mad. The family burned up in the aftermath, bursting apart and scattering like a falling star hitting the atmosphere.” She sighed and closed her eyes, extinguishing the dragon.  “Or at least that's how the story goes. It is probably just a myth made up to cover the consequences of years of inbreeding.  But either way there's madness in my blood, and someday it will come for me.” She offered him a watery smile before drinking down the rest of the alcohol in her mug.
She didn't have to look at Julian to know that he was gazing at her in sadness. She could feel it, like rain falling upon her. “Does your teacher know?”
Lizbeth shrugged  “I don't recall telling him, but that means very little.  There's much he knows, and much I don't remember.”
The silence stretched.  Lizbeth waved her  hand at the candle and it jumped back  to life, back to being  just an ordinary flame. Julian clicked his tongue in a thoughtful  manner. “I think you're stronger than you give yourself credit for.” His arm was still slung across her shoulders and he used it to pull her into a comforting hug. “You’ll keep your sanity through sheer force of will if you must.  You'll show them! You are a dragon, through and through.”
Lizbeth could have kissed him for the kind words. She almost did, craning her head back to look up at him.  She swayed towards him-
A raucous chorus of bells and squawking interrupted her. Malek had swooped in through a window, screaming at the top his lungs, and the bar erupted into chaos. “Guards afoot! Time to go, little dragon.” Julian's arm dropped from her shoulders to circle Lizbeth’s waist. He dragged her out of the booth, carrying her nearly halfway towards the back door before he set her on her feet again. They burst into the cool night air side by side and were halfway down the street before he pulled her to a stop. Her head was swimming as he rattled off directions to get her back to her shop, pressed a kiss to her forehead, and then he vanished into the night.
