I've seen this post floating around many Facebook groups for the last few months, and I cannot stress how angry it makes me. Because it is 100% bullshit.

The topic of owners who don't feel able to stay with their pets at the end of their lives for whatever reason is a hot one, and some people will insist there is no excuse for not being present - but there are many reason, not least trauma, phobia, PTSD from previous losses, etc. It is no one's place to judge someone's personal capabilities. And I absolutely reject the suggestion that 90% of owners do not stay with their pet - that is absolutely false.

What upsets me most about this post is the suggestion that animals are "frantic" during their last moments, and that us as veterinary staff would allow this to be the case. Yes, some animals are distressed to be apart from their owners. But those animals are never briskly put down in a state of panic. My colleagues and I go to great lengths to make all of our patients as comfortable and peaceful as possible at the end. Animals without owners are given as many hugs, treats, kind words, love and care as any other. I cannot count how many dogs and cats I have held in my arms and spoken calming words to as they passed. I have had a dog collapse on me because I held him up so he could bury his nose in a treat jar as the drugs were injected. To suggest that we would EVER allow an animal to pass whilst "frantically looking around" is deeply insulting.

Please, if you read any posts like this, do not believe them. Veterinary staff have enough problems with mental health and abuse without this untrue bullshit being floated around.

I just really needed to get this off my chest.

it's been 2 horrible weeks but my cat is slowly recovering

#i was pretty sad and disappointed that the vets at the emergency clinic only operated on his legs and told me his mouth will heal on its own #when that wasn't the case since his jaw was dislocated it had to be put back in place #an easy non surgical procedure if done as soon as possible so it won't begin to heal in the wrong position #but they didn't #and it just didn't sit right with me #it felt weird when they told me it will heal on its own and it will remain moved to the left #so i took him to a specialised dentist surgeon who told me there's no way he would have started to eat again on its own like that #and my cat is lucky i came to see her now and not later since it's not too late to move the jaw back manually #but she did have to sew the joints together temporarily #and now he has two cute diamond buttons above his mouth #he's bejeweled

can't decide if I want to be a gynecologist or if I want to marry one

#If I marry one we can open a practice together and she can oversee cesarean sections #and that guarantees I can prescribe medicine in any US state without needing to get approval from a man nor from any physician #Whom I have no way of vetting the level of work they've done to unlearn a male medical bias or to be pro woman in their practice #And /I/ don't have to go to med school and learn science that is primarily based around the male body for 5 years #despite my goal profession(s) being centered entirely around female health & biology. And /i/ don't have to pay for med school #but on the other hand. I COULD become a gynecologist and then #I could do exactly the same job I want to do as a nurse + I am a fucking Doctor + a woman in STEM + I get the same benefit of being able #to write prescriptions as I would if I married an OB/gyn and there's no barriers depending on the state I work in #+ I can perform cesarean sections and I don't have to leave my patients safety in the hands of the nearest hospital surgeon #In the event of an EMERGENCY. like if you want something done right you gotta do it yourself and all that #and also I make hella bank as a doctor like I make some hardcore moolah #Money is a good idea most of the time in my opinion #But at the same time like. Do /I/ wanna be in charge of cutting a woman open? Uhhhhhhhh #I mean. I smoke weed yall. and I watch children cartoons all day. And I'm like a b average student #Can /I/ really be trusted to cut a child out of a woman with no casualties?? Like idfk tbh. TBH #I don't know if I have it in me. Like idk #I know no healthcare job is okay to be mediocre at. I feel like I could excel at being a midwife but totally unconfident about being #a doctor. hiiii lil vet update <3

today I finished my shelter medicine rotation after performing a 6am-3pm TNR event (on a saturday) and after performing surgeries 5 days in a row this week from tuesday-saturday. on this rotation over the last 2 weeks i performed a total of 17 procedures by myself (5 cat neuters, 5 cat spays, 3 dog spays and 4 dog neuters)! I got my adult dog neuter down to just 25 minutes from start to finish, and got my cat spay time down to just over 25 minutes too! On thursday I completed a cat spay in 40 minutes, and today I was able to get it down to 25 minutes! I feel so so proud of myself! today we had this TNR event (trap neuter and release of feral cats) where the rotation 4th year students got to perform/teach 3rd students how to perform the cats spays, along with also teaching 1st year students how to do a cat neuter. I was really nervous to do the TNR today because i didn’t think i would be any good at teaching students from lower years how to do these shelter spay/neuter surgery techniques because i didn’t feel confident in performing them myself. but after today, i feel confident in performing these surgery techniques and teaching! I had several of the 3rd year students tell me i was an “amazing teacher” and that i did a “great job explaining and teaching the techniques and new skills” they didn’t know before and the 1st year students I got to help said they loved working with me and that i really helped them. I got to work on 9 surgeries today (7 spays and 2 neuters) for the TNR, one of which was a first trimester pregnant cat which made the spay a little more difficult but was a helpful surgical experience and helps to decreased the feral cat population. on this 2 week rotation I’ve got to help the community by providing free vaccines/microchips/medical care to sick patients/spay and neuter surgeries to lower income and unhoused pet owners, along with bettering my surgical skills. this rotation has been exhausting, but i’ve really enjoyed learning and becoming a better doctor! now, onto my 2 week anesthesia rotation starting on tuesday!

So my cat has soft tissue sarcoma. It’s localized and not likely to metastasize. His prognosis isn’t great & his surgery would be pretty hard on him. I just don’t know if I wanna subject him to it and I gotta make a decision soon. He’s finally bouncing back after his mass removal. If just pains me so much. I’m so fucking conflicted on what the best course of action is for him cuz there’s no guarantee the surgery will completely remove all of the cancer cells. The cost of the surgery is also an issue. I feel terrible being so hesitant on what to do that would be most beneficial for him in the long run. Maybe it’s better to say you did all you could even if in the end he can’t be saved…

#luckily a local surgeon is willing to do surgery on him instead of having to drive hours to the nearest vet oncologist

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet.

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.

The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$1500!" she cried, "$1500 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $50, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $1500."
