Happy 800!
Ho-Tan, Vex/Ho-Tan; Touch, Candle
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy your prompt fic (and that you don't mind that I included the Youngers so prominently)! I had a lot of fun writing it and finding ways for our beloved Yonderland residents to confuse some Christmas traditions from Debbie's world ;)
Explanations for the Youngers' names can be found in this post.
List of prompts is here. Filled prompts are here, here, here, here and here on AO3.

The Surprise [AO3]
Ho-Tan knew it was no secret that Debbie’s world fascinated her. She had, after all, written the best-selling tome Birmingham and Beyond – Customs and Traditions from the Chosen One’s World. Debbie had been kind enough to allow her to visit several times so she could conduct her research there which, Ho-Tan was proud to say, had actually included a trip to the local library. She could have spent hours there, lost among the books – and gladly would have if Debbie hadn’t reminded her that time flowed differently in Yonderland and she’d be gone for days if they didn’t leave as planned. The thought of her Youngers and Vex worrying themselves sick about her had ultimately been enough to convince Ho-Tan to pack up her notes and hurry on home.
Vex had laughed when she told him all about it, and with a very sweet kiss to the tip of her nose said, “You can stay in Deb-beh’s world as long as you like, love. We know how much your research means to you.”
“But not as much as you and the children,” she’d whispered before she’d pulled him and the Youngers close.
It had taken her months to turn her endless pages of notes into anything even remotely resembling organised chapters, and even longer to edit it all properly. But after almost a year of hard work, her book had finally been ready for publishing, and to her complete and utter surprise, it became an instant hit. Even though Debbie was no longer going on quests as the Chosen One, the people of Yonderland still considered her their saviour and seemed to be rather curious about her life and the world Nestor of Maddox had entrusted her to when she was but a baby, causing her book’s first edition to sell out within a week.
The Elders weren’t quite so enthusiastic when she gave them their own copy.
“Why are there no pictures in it?” Pressley wondered aloud as he leafed through the 300 pages with a frown on his face.
“There’s a map of Debbie’s world right at the back?” Ho-Tan offered helpfully.
The smile Pressley gave her looked a little forced.
Vex didn’t even pretend he would read it. “Sorry, love, but you know the words become confusing after a while and make my head ache.”
“I still want you to have it,” Ho-Tan smiled, not surprised and certainly not angry. How could she be when Vex put it so carefully on his shelf and she knew he would treasure it for the simple reason that she had given it to him?
She hadn’t planned on giving the Youngers a copy, figuring they would be even less interested in what was, essentially, academic research than their parents were. But then she saw young Sepal reading his father’s copy one day and realised how foolish that thought had been. The Youngers had always embraced things from Debbie’s world, be it her Krismas carols or the annual Easter Egg Hunt. She should have known they would embrace this too and be eager to learn more.
So that evening, instead of a bedtime story, Ho-Tan read to them a chapter from her book. They listened with wide eyes as she talked about the geography of Debbie’s world – “Great Britain is the centre, see?” – and wasn’t surprised when the other Elders joined them the next evening for the second chapter. Just like that it became a family thing, and Ho-Tan wished she could put into words how happy it made her to have everyone she loved together for an hour every night. Their lives were so busy these days what with having to restore order to the other realms – a process that would take years, she feared – that moments like this had become incredibly rare in the last few months. It didn’t help that the Youngers were slowly but surely growing up as well. She knew it was only a matter of time until one of them would declare himself too old for bedtime stories, and Ho-Tan dreaded the moment that day came with all her heart.
“You worry too much,” Vex told her one night, two weeks into their new routine. As gentle as the flutter of butterfly wings, he took the brush out of her hands and began to untangle her hair for her. “It doesn’t matter how old they get. They will never stop needing you, love.”
Ho-Tan met his eyes in the mirror. “I stopped needing my parents. So did you.”
Vex paused his gentle touches to give her hand a squeeze. “That was different.”
“I know but–“
“No, Alfie,” he said. “Our children are growing up more loved than we ever were. They will always be glad to come home to us. I promise.”
He kissed her then, softly, and it was only when he saw a smile pulling at her lips once more that he went back to brushing her hair.
Ho-Tan knew he was right but a part of her still couldn’t help feeling just a little sad at the thought of her sons growing up and possibly going their own ways soon. Neither of them had yet expressed the wish to take on the role of an Elder one day, and just the idea of Alvin travelling the Seven-and-a-half Seas on his own and Irk collecting plants in some jungle far beyond her reach made her want to hoard every laugh and hug like a dragon hoarded its gold. She had always known they would not stay little forever; she’d just thought she’d have a little more time before they grew up she’d have to let them go.
Over the next few weeks, Ho-Tan tried her best not to show how melancholic that thought made her. If the Youngers noticed that she hugged them a little tighter than usual or lingered at their door after she’d kissed them goodnight, they didn’t show it. She was pretty sure Vex had noticed but he didn’t say anything either. He simply held her a little closer at night, his way of silently reassuring her that he was there and that everything would be okay.
It didn’t even cross her mind that he and the Youngers could be planning something to cheer her up until she woke up to soft kisses behind her ear on a Sunday morning four weeks before Thanktival. A glance towards the window told her it was still early – so early the sun was not even up yet and Vex would normally still be fast asleep. Amused and just a little curious, Ho-Tan turned around in his arms and greeted him with a proper good morning kiss. “You’re up early.”
Vex made one of those noises she found incredibly endearing before he said, rather mysteriously, “Well, today is a special day.”
Ho-Tan frowned, trying to figure out what he meant. She was quite sure it wasn’t one of their important days – she’d never forgotten one of those. But what else could it be?
Seeing her confusion, Vex laughed and pressed another kiss to her lips. “Come on, let’s get you up and out of bed, old girl.”
Ho-Tan let him pull her to her feet, still wondering what he was up to. After they got dressed, Vex helped her with her hair – an intimate way of spending time together she’d always loved but rarely allowed herself to indulge in these days. His touch was gentle, ever loving, and she closed her eyes in contentment as his deft fingers skilfully created the braids she had worn all her adult life.
“There, all done,” Vex whispered softly into her ear.
Ho-Tan opened her eyes and, seeing the butterfly hair clip in her hair, smiled up at him. “Thank you.”
Smiling back at her, he took her hand and led her out of the room towards the kitchen. Usually, the kitchen was still dark and empty when Ho-Tan got up in the morning to get breakfast ready. Today, candlelight was spilling out into the hallway in flickering, golden hues when they rounded the corner. Confused and just a little suspicious, she turned to Vex. “What’s going on?”
He merely continued smiling and squeezed her hand. “You’ll see in a moment.”
When the sounds of excited whispers – the Youngers, if Ho-Tan wasn’t mistaken – echoed through the hallway, Vex not so subtly stomped his foot to alert them of their presence. The whispers stopped at once and Ho-Tan bit her lip so she wouldn’t laugh. It was clear Vex and the Youngers had planned something for her – a surprise breakfast, perhaps? – and the last thing she wanted was to ruin the fun.
“Ready?” Vex asked when they were almost at the door. Ho-Tan nodded and let him guide her into the kitchen.
“Happy Advent!” the Elders and Youngers cheered in unison when she walked through the door. They were all there, waving at her with bright grins on their faces or pointing excitedly at what could only be an advent wreath sitting on the middle of the table. Ho-Tan’s vision blurred as she took it all in. It was only a few weeks ago that she’d read them the Krismas chapter from her book. At the time, she hadn’t thought anything about the curious questions the Youngers had asked her about it the next day but now, looking at the beautifully decorated wreath, it all suddenly made sense.
“Did you make this yourselves?” she breathed in awe.
The Youngers nodded.
“Everyone made their own candle. Look Mum, this one’s mine!” Irk said and pointed excitedly at a green candle that had different kinds of leaves all over it. Leaning forward to get a closer look, Ho-Tan felt her heart warm with more love than it could possibly contain when she saw the personalities of her friends and children reflected in all the candles on the wreath, be it in the quill and inkpot on Sepal’s or the pub sign on Pressley’s.
“They look beautiful,” she whispered.
Irk grinned and wrapped his arms around her waist in a hug. “We have one candle for you too!”
Alvin stepped forward and held a plain, dark blue candle out to her. Ho-Tan turned it over in her hands, wondering how she could personalise it, when Vex gently tapped her on the shoulder and held up a golden scroll and apple blossom made of wax. “I hope you don’t mind but I made these for you.”
It was only then that she noticed his own candle, burning brightly in the back of the wreath with a blue butterfly attached to its side next to a glass of sherry. The butterfly looked just like the one he had put in her hair only moments ago.
With shaking hands, Ho-Tan took the scroll and blossom from him. When she struggled to attach them to her candle, overwhelmed as she was, Alvin and Irk stepped in to help. “You’ve got it, Mum.”
She smiled at them through her tears and, together with them, finished the candle and placed it in the empty spot next to Vex’s.
“Light it, Uncle Choop!” Alvin said. Choop grumbled about being ordered around by a child but pulled out a box of matches anyway. A moment later, Ho-Tan’s candle flared to life and added its own glow to the warm light illuminating the kitchen.
“Perfect,” Irk breathed.
It really is, Ho-Tan thought as she looked at the twelve candles burning merrily on the wreath, symbolising not only every one of them but also the twelve realms and, of course, the Twelve Days of Krismas. Ho-Tan wasn’t quite sure if Debbie’s tradition demanded they be lit all at one – Debbie wasn’t quite clear on that – but it really didn’t matter. What did was that her family had made this for her, just because they knew she needed some cheering up and loved the traditions from Debbie’s world. It wasn’t even Thanktival yet, and yet she couldn’t imagine getting a better present this year.
As the others began to pull out plates and mugs from the cupboards to set the table for breakfast, she quietly turned to Vex. “Did you organise all this?”
“Maybe.” He winked at her before he reached out to cup her face. “You know I can’t bear seeing you sad, Alfie.”
Ho-Tan leaned into his touch and smiled when his thumb brushed a stray tear away. “Thank you.”
Vex looked like he wanted to say more but then Irk and Alvin began tugging at her hands, wanting her to move. Laughing through her tears, Ho-Tan let them pull her to her chair.
“We have another surprise for you, Mum,” Alvin said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. “Mr Bojangles helped with this one.”
That was all the explanation she got before he and the other Youngers started singing The Twelve Days of Krismas for her. Delighted, Ho-Tan looked at Vex and found him already smiling back at her, a serene look on his face. He reached for her hand and briefly brought it to his lips to place a kiss upon her knuckles before he gave the Youngers his full attention. Smiling softly to herself, Ho-Tan turned to look at the Youngers too, and as she sat there in the warm glow of the candles, surrounded by the people she loved most in all the realms, she knew she didn’t need to worry about the future. Whatever changes it would bring, her family would always be with her and find a way to make her smile.

vex and ho-tan have a third younger, but cant figure out what to do about a name because at this point, name-changing is a family trait.
Alfie chose her name when she was younger, its still close to her birth name but it feels like her, and of course took on ho-tan when she joined the elders.
vex chose his name because he thought it was funny. "whys your name vex" "oh does it VEX you"
Alvin picked his name when he came out because it was close to his mums name and his birth name
Irk chose his name to be more like his dad and because he thinks its funny. he wants to Irk people.
they cant keep calling the baby baby or child, but they also find it hilarious that the likelyhood of whatever name they choose being kept is slim at this point, so they dont want to choose anything they really like.
in the end they go with noah - its gener-neutral, but also because they nave noah dea what to name the baby. geddit? no idea? noah-dea? vex loves it.
(noah DOES keep their name; but they add Deer as an official middle name to make the joke stronger)

12 Days of Thanktival — Day 9: Hurt-Comfort/Elders/Snow Day
[AO3 link]
Relationships: Scribe Elder Ho-Tan/Wise Elder Vex, Scribe Elder Ho-Tan & Wise Elder Vex
Characters: Scribe Elder Ho-Tan, Wise Elder Vex, Chief Elder Choop, Vice Elder Flowers, Lord Elder Pressley
Summary: When Ho-Tan gets hurt sledding, Vex takes care of her.
A/N: Me and my family usually go sledding whenever we get a lot of snow so it was really fun incorporating that into this fic as something the Elders and Youngers would do together.
Better
A ten minute walk from the Elders’ Chamber there was a steep hill that sloped downwards into a narrow dip before coming up again on the other side, and sometimes on days when it snowed properly the Elders and Youngers would go sledding there.
It was a popular destination on snow days, and they would usually be joined by families from the local villages, which meant that they had to get there first thing in the morning to be sure of the best spot. They’d done well this year, getting up at the crack of dawn and dragging their sleds through the woods by the light of the moons, so that it was still mostly dark by the time they set up their camping chairs at the top of the hill. They were all wrapped up warm in coats, scarves and gloves—even a begrudging Flowers—and Ho-Tan had made hot chocolate for all of them. While they waited for it to get light enough to start sledding, they huddled together for warmth and talked excitedly about the day ahead of them. Before long other groups started to show up, and when the hilltop was starting to get crowded, Choop leapt to his feet.
“Raise you to the bottom!” he announced gleefully, positioning his sled to get the best takeoff and sitting down.
“You’re on, old boy!” Vex said, struggling to get into his sled. Irk sat on his lap and took the reins of the sled, as everyone else got into position. Only when they were all ready did Choop push off, flying down the hill and gaining speed as he went. Vex gave a push with his legs and then they were racing off after Choop. The sled was slightly too small for both of them and rocked from side to side, so that they both had to fight to keep their balance.
“You remember how to steer this thing, right?” Vex yelled in Irk’s ear as they swerved dangerously around Pressley and almost went flying.
“What?” Irk turned around to shout, and at that moment the sled spun out of control, flipping over and dumping them both in the snow. Luckily Irk was still holding onto the reins, and the sled didn’t continue to slide down the hill.
“Are you alright?” Vex asked his son as he dusted snow from himself.
“That was awesome!” Irk cried. “Let’s do it again!”
Vex grinned and got to his feet, taking the sled from Irk and beginning the trek back to the top. Unfortunately going up the hill was a lot harder than going down, and by the time they made it he was out of breath and feeling rather warm in all his layers.
“Here’s an idea,” Vex said, gesturing to a sled that lay on its side, currently not in use. It belonged to Ho-Tan, he was pretty sure, and was a lot bigger than the one he and Irk had been sharing. “You take ours, I’ll take this one, and we’ll race to the bottom.”
“Deal,” Irk said.
They sledded for hours as the sun gradually made its way across the sky. At one point it clouded over and began to snow again, and the kids made a game of trying to catch snowflakes on their tongues. They were beginning to carve out tracks in the snow where it had been compressed under their sleds, which only seemed to make them go faster. A steady stream of people had been arriving all morning now, and the sledders were becoming increasingly packed together.
Vex had just made it back up to the top of the hill and was pausing to get his breath back when it happened. One minute he was watching Choop and Ho-Tan sledding along next to each other, and the next Ho-Tan’s sled ran over a rock, diverted violently from its path and crashed straight into Choop’s. They went tumbling down the hill together, coming to a stop in a small ditch near the bottom, and Vex was horrified to hear a cry of pain from one of them. He didn’t hesitate, abandoning his sled and stumbling down the hill, using his hands for grip on the ground, his boots ploughing the snow as he half-ran, half-slid to where they had landed. When he got there both Choop and Ho-Tan were sitting up, their sleds cast to one side. Ho-Tan was clutching at her head and wincing, while Choop held her other arm and turned it this way and that, examining her wrist. He gave it a small twist, and Ho-Tan cried out in pain, biting down on her lip.
“Alfie! Are you okay?” Vex cried, and they both looked up at him.
“I think her wrist is broken,” Choop said. “The sled ran over her arm on the way down. She hit her head on the ground as well.”
“Let’s get back up to the top,” Vex said. “We can come back for the sleds.”
Ho-Tan nodded somewhat dazedly and leant on Vex to stand up, and the three of them began the trek up the hill. When they got there Vex sat with Ho-Tan, while Choop went to get the sleds.
“You need to go home and get that seen to,” Vex told her. “I’ve got a potion to fix broken bones somewhere. I’ll come back with you.”
Ho-Tan shook her head. “No—I don’t want to ruin your day,” she said. “You stay here and have fun. I’ll be alright on my own.”
“Nonsense,” Vex said. “I can’t leave you to go off on your own when you’re hurt, what kind of a jerk would do that? And I’m sure Flowers won’t mind keeping an eye on Alvin and Irk while we’re gone, will you?”
“Of course not,” Flowers chimed in. “No brother—or sister—should be left to suffer alone.”
“I suppose you’re right,” Ho-Tan said. “Okay, let’s go.”
Vex and Ho-Tan headed away from the group and began to walk back towards the Elders’ Chamber. The walk seemed considerably longer with Ho-Tan shivering by his side and desperately trying to conceal the miserable look of pain on her face from him.
“How badly does it hurt?” he asked her gently.
“My head feels worse,” she said. “My wrist just feels sort of… funny. But it hurts when I try to move it.”
Vex reached out and put an arm around her shoulders. “We’re nearly there now,” he said. “Just a bit further.”
Ho-Tan nodded, but said nothing. When at last they rounded the corner and found themselves outside the front door to the Chamber, Vex pulled out his keys and let them in. He took Ho-Tan straight to the kitchen, where there was a fire still blazing in the hearth, and sat her down in front of it.
“Stay here and get warm,” he told her. “I’ll be right back.”
He made his way to his room and started rummaging around for the healing potion he knew he had somewhere—he’d bought it on a whim from Wizard Bradley a while ago and since forgotten about it. Finally he found it, stuffed at the bottom of his emergency supply kit (it was mostly spare buttons and a bag of dried fruit) and rushed back downstairs to Ho-Tan. He found her cradling her broken wrist in her lap and wincing in pain. It was already swollen and bruised, and the sight of it made Vex’s heart pang with sympathy.
“I found it,” he said, dropping into the chair next to her and uncorking the small glass bottle. “Here, drink this.”
Ho-Tan took the bottle with her good hand and necked it, grimacing at its foul taste. Then she put it down and turned to face Vex. “That was really disgusting,” she said. “What’s it made of, fish guts?”
Vex laughed. “I’ll make us hot chocolate in a minute, that’ll take the taste away.”
“Aah!” Ho-Tan cried suddenly, clutching at her wrist in pain. Vex had only taken that kind of healing potion once before, but he remembered exactly how painful it could be as your bones magically underwent the months-long process of repairing themselves in a matter of minutes. He reached out and wrapped his arms around Ho-Tan, stroking her shoulder.
“It… it hurts…” she said.
“That means it’s working,” Vex said. “I know it’s horrible… just hold on, it fades pretty quickly.”
Ho-Tan nodded and buried her face in Vex’s chest. He could tell how much effort it was taking her not to cry out in pain, and he felt a rush of admiration for her strength and perseverance. A few minutes passed like that, but eventually the pain seemed to abate, because she sat up and managed a watery smile.
“How do you feel now?” Vex asked her.
“A lot better,” she said. “It’s still kind of numb, but I can move it again.” She bent her wrist gently to demonstrate. Vex took her hand and felt it gently, to confirm that the break had been fully fixed. Then he examined her forehead as well—it was going to bruise spectacularly, but there was no serious damage done. The best thing to do would most likely be to let it heal on its own.
“That’s good,” he said. “You might want to be careful with it for the next few days, but other than that you should be completely fine.”
Ho-Tan smiled weakly at him. “Thank you for taking care of me,” she said. “It was very sweet of you. I’m just sorry I ruined your day—I know how much you love it when it snows.”
“Don’t be silly,” he said. “Nothing is more important to me than making sure you’re okay. There’ll be other snow days. All that matters now is looking after you.”
A warm pink colour spread across Ho-Tan’s cheeks, and she leant her head on his shoulder again.
“You’re the best,” she told him. “Thank you.”
He wrapped his arms around her, and leant down to kiss the top of her head. “No problem,” he said. “I’ll always take care of you.”

Help! I'm running out of ideas of things to draw :(
Okay, technically I've still been drawing lots, but I don't know if you guys would want to see any of it since most of it is just messy uncoloured sketches, and drawings of my OCs.
Really I would just appreciate it if yall would maybe suggest some things for me to quickly doodle, so that I'm at least posting soneting on my blog.
And if by some twist of fate you'd actually want me to post a bit about my OCs, um, that would be cool too :')
For reference I'm pretty open to drawing things from
Ghostbusters: Ronrook, Stantzler, the EGB team, IDW characters, everyone is pretty fun to draw tbh
Our Flag Means Death: I've only really drawn Ed and Stede so far but I do adore drawing the costumes from that show
What We Do In The Shadows: Vianton mostly, I love the show as well but I am very partial to the wolves and especially Stu
The Six Idiots: I finished watching Yonderland and bbc Ghosts so I'm a bit obsessed rn. I'm partial to Patcap and Vextan, but I'd love to draw all the characters
Disney Zombies: bit of an odd one to add in here but hear me out, if you go into these mo it's knowing it's gonna be cheesy as all heck you can have a jolly good time (also the music is pretty dang good). I made a ton of OCs with @dime-smothied for this
Figment and Dreamfinder: listen, this funky little dragon has a stranglehold on my brain for some reason, I don't make the rules. And Dreamfinder is really endearing. I've got a lot of doodles of them.
Lego Monkie Kid: this show had no reason being as good as it was. Anyways, I love all the characters, but am partial to freenoodles
Anyways, I just need some ideas, cuz my brain isn't making them o_o

yonderland for the fandom ask!
Favorite character: debbie! she's such a fun and GOOD character and the fact that her secret power is essentially "common sense" is hilarious
Least Favorite character: admiral anous a.k.a captain anus. like to slap his bald head reblog to slap his bald head
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): i don't really ship any of the characters in yonderland but shoutout to debbie/negatus, vextan and uh. ellis of woolworth/kendall the jeweller asdfghjkl
Character I find most attractive: debbie and the two men who show up in s1 and nearly duel to the death over letting the other go through a doorway. that specific fashion and the hair and the swords is hot ok
Character I would marry: ho-tan, no justification needed
Character I would be best friends with: both elf & nick the stick. nick's pessimism is hilarious. 10/10 i relate
A random thought: i think it would be really funny if negatus' beard is actually just sharpied on. sometimes he adds a moustache or a goatee for evil flair
An unpopular opinion: there are several racist characters/settings (particularly ennythingos) and it's uh. uncomfortable!
My Canon OTP: don't have one
My Non-canon OTP: again, don't have one, but debbie/negatus and vextan are both fun
Most Badass Character: either debbie or imperatrix, largely because they're the only people in the realm who aren't like... wildly incompetent
Most Epic Villain: again, imperatrix by virtue of being even remotely competent. however the best villains of the show are obviously rita neil and jeff
Pairing I am not a fan of: debbie/pete he's gay she's got a double life in a fantasy realm you know how it is
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): i don't think any of the characters were screwed up but i do also feel bad for ho-tan's wish getting reversed
Favourite Friendship: debbie & elf
Character I most identify with: ho-tan because i too wish i could magically become a different gender
Character I wish I could be: one of the evil overlords like negatus and co., one of the knights, or again one of those guys who get into swordfights over minor things because gender envy

The Key
“What’s this?” Ho-Tan asked when Vex handed her a small blue box that felt surprisingly heavy in her hands.
“A gift,” Vex explained – which wasn’t much of an explanation at all, Ho-Tan thought. “And before you ask: yes, I know it’s not your Name Day or one of our anniversaries.”
Intrigued and more than a little curious, Ho-Tan glanced down at the box. “Then what’s the occasion?”
“I’ll tell you after you’ve opened it,” Vex smiled secretively.
Ho-Tan huffed out a laugh and gently tugged at the ribbon that was tied around the box. When it finally fell away, her heart began to beat a little faster in anticipation of what Vex had gotten her. A new quill, perhaps? Or maybe one of those ancient scrolls she’d been trying so hard to acquire for months now?
In the end, no amount of guesswork could have prepared her for what lay inside the box. Her fingers shook as she opened it, and when she looked inside, her eyes went wide with shock. A key, the size of her palm and very familiar despite its altered shape, glinted up at her from a small blue velvet cushion.
“Is that–?” she asked in awe.
“A copy of the Chamber’s Key?” Vex smiled. “Yes.”
Ho-Tan’s gaze flicked up to the original hanging around his neck. “But – that’s not allowed, Vex! There must only ever be one Key.”
“Pep, pep, pep,” he said and took the second key – her key – out of the box by its blue string. He looked at it for a moment before he ever so gently draped it over her head. When he let go, the key, flat and wide where his was round and narrow, rested just below her heart. “There. Perfect.”
“Vex,” Ho-Tan began, not quite able to let the argument go just yet. The rules were there for a reason, after all. But then she looked down and noticed the intricate engravings on the key’s surface, and whatever she had been about to say fled her mind. The empty box fell from her hand, forgotten.
“Remember when we stood in Debbie’s garden and you were missing our home?” Vex asked softly. He cupped his hands around hers so they were holding the key between them. “I can’t promise you something like that won’t ever happen again. I sincerely hope it won’t but if it does, this way you’ll always carry the most important parts of our home with you.”
Ho-Tan’s breath caught in her throat as he began to list all the things that mattered to her the most in life and pointed them out on the key: the night sky with the three moons, her favourite constellation and the Red Star on one side – “So you will always find your way back home.” And an apple blossom and butterfly – “To remember you are loved,” next to the names of their children on the other – “So you’ll always have them close.”
Tenderly, Vex closed her fingers around the key and pressed it against her heart. “It’s meant to remind you that you’ll always have a home to return to, no matter where life may take us in the future.”
“Vex,” Ho-Tan whispered in awe. “This is–“
She shook her head, unable to put the magnitude of his gift and the gratitude she felt into words.
“I know,” Vex said. “It’s okay, Alfie. Come here.”
Helplessly, Ho-Tan tipped forward into his waiting arms and buried her head in his shoulder. His soft laughter rang in her ears as his arms came up around her, holding her close, keeping her safe, grounding her – just like he’d done for most of her life. And just like the key would now whenever they were parted.
“I hope these are happy tears, my dear,” he murmured softly into her ear.
Ho-Tan nodded and felt him press a kiss onto the top of her head before he tightened his arms around her. They stood like this in her room until the sun gave way to the moons. When her favourite constellation twinkled into existence in the night sky, they curled up under the blankets and Ho-Tan fell asleep with Vex’s head on her chest and the weight of the key resting just beside it, warm and reassuring.

Vextan for the ship ask game, please 💙
NOTES: I didn't forget this ask! Damn, but I love those two!! 🥰 The names for the Elders' Youngers belong to @ailendolin, as do some of the headcanons about the Elders' past 😊
Gives nose/forehead kisses:
It's Ho-Tan. She did it to Vex, not long after they first met, he was asleep, and she just had to press a kiss to his forehead, after he fell asleep helping her work all day. She regularly does it to Alvin and Irk, and she loves doing it to Vex, especially when he doesn't expect it!
Gets jealous the most:
I don't think either of them really do, to be honest. Vex can sometimes be oblivious, and Ho-Tan loves him so much, that she simply cannot be jealous of anything that makes Vex happy (spoiler: she's the one who makes him happiest) Although, one day on a trip with Debbie and rest of the Elders, a woman attempts to flirt with Vex. Ho-Tan does not like the ugly squeeze of insecurity and fear in her chest, but Vex just squeezes her hand tighter, holds her gaze lovingly and without taking his eyes of his beloved, brightly says, 'I'm already with the most beautiful woman here'.
Takes care of on sick days:
Ho-Tan is a caregiver by nature, so she always looks after Vex and their children, but she struggles herself when she is poorly. That's when Vex takes charge and he makes sure that his beloved is resting and wants for nothing. What always makes Ho-Tan feel better us having her family by her side.
Drags the other person out into the water on beach day:
They both love beach days now, although Vex did need convincing at first. Building a sandcastle with little Irk and Alvina was all it took to fall in love with the beach. The sea was a bit trickier, but Ho-Tan took his hand and they walked in the shallow water together, picked shells and listened to the waves, and to this day it's one of their favourite things.
Brings the other lunch at work:
Sometimes Ho-Tan forgets to eat when she gets into the writing mindset. She writes and writes, until she smells something familiar, and lifts her head to see Vex with a cup of cherry infusion tea in his hand. She knows it's for her, and gratefully takes it from Vex, with a sweet thank you kiss, as Vex takes the seat next to her and feeds her an almond muffin, that their children helped him make.
Tries to start role-playing in bed:
To be fair, neither is the type, but after one evening at Debbie's and hanging out with Voltari and Dissectus, not to mention Negatus, Vex's head is full of information. He only has to try to realise it's not his and Ho-Tan's thing, and they fall asleep, watching the starry sky outside their chambers' windows.
Embarrassingly drunk dancer:
Vex. Only he doesn't really get embarrased. He used to care what people thought once upon a time, but not anymore. In fact, I can imagine him exactly like Ben Wyatt from Parks and Rec in the season 7 episode 7, 'Donna and Joe'. Any Parks and Rec fans will know exactly what I mean 😁 And yes, he would call Ho-Tan 'babydoll' 😍
Firmly believes in couples costumes:
They both do, although Ho-Tan takes a bit of convincing. When Debbie first introduces the idea to the Elders, Ho-Tan is a bit worried that people might find her looking silly. Vex assures her that that's the whole idea, but that if she's not ready to do a couples costume, he won't get dressed up either. He then tries on the most ridiculous costumes, until Ho-Tan is crying with laughter and feeling much better.
Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas:
If she could, Ho-Tan would make presents for everyone, all the time, as she loves it. She adores looking at the faces of her family on Thanktival morning, especially since Chompus stopped eating the presents, and her loved ones can enjoy them instead. Ho-Tan always insists she doesn't need much in return, but Vex is having none of it. He wants to give his beloved everything and he tries, asking Debbie for help and trying to find the most beautiful, most expensive gift every time. And every time nothing seems good enough. Until Debbie suggests he learns to paint. And Vex does, painting the apple orchard and Ho-Tan under the tree. It's not perfect, but Ho-Tan cries with happiness, and insists this is the most precious gift she's ever had, and can Vex please paint himself next to her, because that's when her life began.
Makes the other eat breakfast:
Vex is terrible at eating breakfasts. It may be because it's virtually impossible to get him out of bed on time. He usually oversleeps, runs to the chamber and gets cranky as the day goes on. So Ho-Tan hatches a plan. She sets Vex's alarm back an hour and when he wakes up, she's there ready to tell him to please come downstairs, the children are waiting and they're all going to have breakfast together. The sun is shining through the window, there is no rush, Irk makes a mess of his eggs, Alvina excitedly tells her parents about school, Ho-Tan's smile is brighter than the sun and Vex never wants to miss breakfast again.
Remembers anniversaries:
While Ho-Tan remembers all big anniversaries, she also holds dear all the moments that marked a significant change in her life. Some of them may seem small, but she cherishes the memories of the joy it brought her. And while Vex can be absent-minded a lot of the time, he knows when Ho-Tan gets a faraway look in her eyes. And so hd asks, what are you thinking about? And she will tell him, and he might remember it differ, but it's important to his love, and so it becomes a special day for him, too.
Brings up having kids first:
Neither is that willing to breach the subject first. Ho-Tan watches longingly as Flowers cradles little Daisy, and Vex watches Ho-Tan, heartbroken, as he doesn't think he'll ever be ready, thoughts of his father burning in his mind. He tells Ho-Tan that he wants her to be happy, even if it's without him. That forces a conversation, and Ho-Tan says that whatever happens in her life, she needs Vex by her side. They are both scared, of course, but Flowers offers sage advice, and both Vex and Ho-Tan promise to be honest with each other about their fears and worries and start looking forward to expanding their little family.
Kills the bugs:
Oh they do not kill the bugs. Or any living creature. Granted, Vex shrieks when a spider drops on him once, but Ho-Tan gently scoops him up (the spider) and takes him outside. Later, Vex swears that no, he did not scream. Both spend time with Irk and Alvina when they are little, to teach them about nature and every creature there is to be found in Yonderland. And yes, uncle Flowers joins them sometimes, but robes stay on.
First to define them as a couple:
Okay, literally everybody knew the moment they saw them together. It was impossible to miss the tender gazes Vex was directing towards Ho-Tan, and Ho-Tan's constant need to be near Vex. The atmosphere around them was different, it exuded calm and devotion. When Debbie saw them, she exchanged glances with the other Elders, who just shrugged. So, you two...? Debbie asks them, and Vex and Ho-Tan just look at each other. Yes, they are a couple, in the traditional meaning of the word, sure, but they've also been a family and each other's everything since they can remember and really being a couple is just a small part of their world.
Who hides their guilty pleasures longer:
They don't really hide much from each other anymore because the confidence they've instilled in one another has stripped them of embarrassment. Anything goes, as long as it makes them happy. Sure, Ho-Tan is slightly surprised the first time she sees Vex binge-watching cartoons, but after finding out what they are, she enlists Debbie's help to get him his favourites and if Ho-Tan takes to recreating her favourite characters' dialogues from films she's seen with Debbie and the girls, when she thinks no-one is around, Vex is certainly not going to bring it up, until he's sure Ho-Tan won't mind.
Snorts while laughing:
Ho-Tan. Debbie invites her and other girls for a movie night, and they watch a comedy. Something makes Ho-Tan laugh, maybe it's not that funny, but she keeps laughing, until she snorts. Rather than that stopping her, it only makes her laugh harder, until tears are in her eyes. That's how much she's laughing, when Vex is trying on all the funny costumes, and Vex just looks adoringly at her, and vows to make her laugh like that all the time, snorting or not.
