Awakening is such a funny game in retrospect. baseline expectations for DA status quo is DA2 team being all concerned about possession and blood magic, and half of the Inquisition crew being suuuper concerned about Cole, and many people being outwardly antagonistic to him based on his spirit-in-a-boy's-body nature.

meanwhile back in Awakening the Warden goes: oh worm? you want to come fight darkspawn with me? sure, the more the merrier! and then the whole gang is just workshopping how to deal with Justice's dead body decaying, Oghren wants to know if Justice fucks, and Nathaniel is all: what if you [spins wheel] possessed someone who was alive? if both parties consent i think that's basically like fine.

the minor problem of following mostly Critical Role and Dragon Age blogs is that every time there is an art of a bedraggled mage who likes cats, has reddish/blondish/lightbrownish hair pulled up into a manbun or a ponytail, is pouring over books, casts fireballs…… half the time i cannot tell you until i scroll to the tags if this is caleb or anders.

so a few notes on outlast and walrider mythology from conversations i had with a german fan:

they were surprised that red barrels referenced such an obscure myth! according to them, much of this type of german folklore is incredibly hard to come by due to unsavory occult studies during wwii. they became distasteful in modern times and much of these stories were destroyed or went underground. if someone learned about this, their knowledge would most likely be from german texts. they assured me that almost nothing detailed exists in english about the walrider or alp, even in the online realm.

this friend was of the mind that the walrider is an actual being conjured, summoned, and bound to the nanomachines rather than an AI itself, as implied by several variants throughout the game. wernicke may say that the project isn't supernatural, but that doesn't quite line up with others who claim the walrider was waiting in the mountain.

in folklore, the walrider is an ancient being and shares a very strong connection to nature, the forest and the surrounding land since it's effectively a nature spirit. it feeds mostly on the life force of the land, nightmares, and very strong emotions. the walrider is known to be obsessed with pregnant women for unknown reasons. it can be trapped if the way it entered a place is sealed off, and it prefers to leave a place the way it originally came.

the veve symbol that flashes continuously throughout the morphogenic engine sequence represents the voudou god of iron, ogun — they suggested that it may be a binding symbol, because fae creatures are repelled by and weak to iron, and such a binding symbol could be effectively used to capture one to do one's bidding once summoned.

the walrider can also be summoned by a different creature called a schrat (also mentioned in the game documents) which are right above them in the mythological hierarchy. female schrat are incredibly rare and share a close connection to the alp, having a similar role as bringers of sickness and nightmares. schrat also feed on emotions, which may be a reason why people with higher empathy and trauma (such as billy, miles, and blake) seem more receptive to the walrider. this could also explain why murkoff prefers subjects that "have nothing wrong" with them.

bonus because i always manage to get people talking about alice marion somehow or another: they also speculated that through murkoff's implied genetic manipulation from deleted dialogue in outlast and from implications in the murkoff account, alice’s connection to the experiment may have to do with becoming a conduit like the schrat, just like billy seemed to be, and that the walrider may protect her or be inclined to do what she asks of it. this could also be why simon claims she has a connection. a bit more tenuous, but they certainly believed it.

i am unwell again about act iii gale and the variations the astral sea/boat scene can have:

node context: genuine, vulnerable - the player just told him they loved him in a way no one else has gale: i conjured this illusion often during my confinement in waterdeep. an escape for the mind where there was none for the body. it was easier to stare at the celestial abyss than recognise the emptiness within myself. easier to pretend my destiny lay among such stars, than work to salvage a life on solid ground. you changed all that.
