Then vs now - the Jazz Scene
Man, the times have changed. It seems I am told a new story every day by a different cat from a bygone era. Stories about how the scene used to be, how tough it used to be.
Back in the day, the scene was aggressive. Everyone wanted their chance on stage, to show what they could do. Boundaries were pushed, each tune got faster than the last, every note got higher and higher, changes got more and more complex, and if you couldn't keep up, that was it, you were cut. Everyone knows the famous story of Bird and Joe jones. Story goes, Charlie got off by a beat attempting some new approaches to improv, so the drummer at the session, Jo Jones from the Count Basie Orchestra, threw a cymbal at Parker.
youtube
Of course, that clip is greatly exaggerated, but the point is clear: back in the day, if you couldn't keep up, you were cut.
Today things just are not like that. While the race to push the boundaries of bebop and jazz is still there, it's no longer run alone. Now, if you fold on stage, people will still clap, and people will help you out. If you get off the form, people will help you get back on, if you play a sour note, it doesn't matter. People don't vibe each other anymore.
But the difficulty lost in competitiveness, is more than made up for in the business of the scene. There is one thing that really leads the music industry: Money. See, back in the day, when cats like Bird, Dizzy, and Trane were playing, there was money in it. Rent was cheap, gigs were frequent, and checks were big. You jam all day, play a gig a night and shed until the morning and make a good living. Albums payed so well, the big cats could take years off gigging and working, living off the money from album sales. Rollins did this in 1959, he didn't play a single gig for 3 years, he just practiced on the Williamsburg Bridge for 16 hours a day.
Nowadays, its practically a brawl for every gig, hundreds of players, all incredible musicians, gunning for the same diminishing number of spots in whatever big band or jazz club they can play at to get a $50 paycheck. Jazz doesn't have the popularity outside of its niche to support the volume of musicians on the scene today, so while the bandstand has become a safe space, the line to get on the bandstand has grown exponentially.
So which scene is tougher? Hard to tell. The stories the old cats tell are certainly intimidating, it's hard to say that that is harder than the finical strain on today's scene
